The day opened with a presentation by Eileen Waegemaekers of SURF in which she argues for a so-called 'commons approach' for the further development of research information infrastructures in the Netherlands. This means that there is a shared ambition to move away from separate and closed systems to more open, shared systems that speak the same language and make it easier to make research results available to everyone.

Waegemaekers' presentation was followed by three pitches of projects that will be started from April 2026 under the flag of ORI and that will be subsidized from the Open Science NL fund for a period of four years. 

The first pitch concerned the DURF project. DURF aims to create a federal network of national repositories, so that academic works become openly available. To achieve that goal, the plan is to use the OpenAIRE broker to enrich data from university repositories. On the one hand, this data will be transferred to the national OpenAIRE CRIS portal and to the E-depot of the National Library (KB). On the other hand, the intention is for the university CRIS/IR systems to be able to draw from the federal network to enrich their own data.

The second pitch focused on the BROCCOLI project. BROCCOLI aims to create a central data warehouse for enriched open metadata. Based on this data, the national open science monitoring can take place, the  Open Access agreements with publishers can be monitored, and research evaluation can take place in a responsible manner.

Finally, the third pitch concerned the MORIS project. MORIS is aimed at enabling open research information for the Universities of Applied Sciences, with a focus on registration of research projects.

After the pitches, it was Nick Veenstra's turn (Groningen University) to tell us more about the use of generative AI in the processing of open research information. After lunch, the day ended with four workshops, in which the participants could actively think about how the ORI transition can be further shaped at the national level.

My name is Sawsam and I work as a financial data officer for LIS Financial Data Support. In this role, I support students and researchers who work with financial data for their research. Alongside my work, I’m currently studying a Master’s in Finance at Tilburg University. At the same University I completed a Bachelor’s in International Business Administration and a Master’s in Strategic Management.

My name is Annemieke and I am 24 years old. After completing my Bachelor’s degree at Tilburg University, I started the Master’s in Business Analytics and Operations Research (BAOR) in 2025, a specialization within the Econometrics program here at Tilburg University. I was born and raised in Brunssum, a small town in Limburg, you might notice that when I speak Dutch! 
I work as a student assistant for the Research Data Office (RDO). In this role, I support researchers with service-related tasks concerning Dataverse. I assist them in publishing their replication packages on Dataverse and I contribute to discussions within the RDO about, amongst others, data storage.

My name is Albert and I am a Bachelor’s student in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University. As a student assistant my role is flexible and mainly focused on supporting digital and web related tasks. I help develop and maintain subject guides, assist with layout and styling improvements across library pages and support colleagues with technical or content related tasks when needed.

What do you do when you’re not working or studying?

Albert:  Outside of university I work as a music producer under the name Beto Beats. I mainly collaborate with Hungarian artists and release music on streaming platforms such as Spotify.  I also develop my own music software and create tools that musicians can load into their music software to shape and manipulate sound. Another project I’m working on is StillTabs, a browser extension I am currently developing that helps people use the internet more intentionally. 
Overall, I enjoy building things, whether that is music, software, or digital tools. What connects these areas for me is an interest in how humans experience technology. I care about how something feels to use, listen to, watch, or interact with, and I enjoy working on projects where creativity and technical thinking come together.

Sawsam: Next to my job and studies, I’m active at De Kleine Consultant, a non-profit student consultancy. We work on consultancy projects for a wide set of organisations, which I really enjoy because it gives me the opportunity to apply what I learn in practice while collaborating with others.
I grew up in the Tilburg area, so the city feels very familiar to me. Outside of work and university, I like staying active and keeping a good balance. Pilates and the gym are my regular routines, and they help me reset after busy weeks. I also enjoy going to the cinema and spending time out with friends, especially if it involves good food and exploring new places. I love travelling too, especially city trips! I enjoy immersing myself in different cultures by walking around new neighbourhoods and getting a feel for the local atmosphere. 
I’m happy to be part of the team and look forward to seeing you around!

Annemieke: In my free time, when I am not studying or working, I enjoy cooking and sharing meals with friends. I like to stay active - I regularly go to the gym - and I play a bit of piano. I also enjoy watching reality TV shows. Recently, I started learning how to play tennis, and during the winter season I go ice skating almost every week.
I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone and continuing my work at the Library!

 

Would you like to get first-hand experience with archiving your research data and making it FAIR? During this session, participants will learn how to deposit data in TiU Dataverse, where research data can be securely stored and preserved for the long term. According to Tilburg University’s data policy, research data should be kept available for at least ten years after the completion of a project.

The workshop is hands-on and will guide participants step by step through the process of depositing data in TiU Dataverse. Along the way, we will discuss practical questions such as:

• What kind of data can or should I upload?

• How do I comply with the FAIR principles?

• What are data licenses?

• Can I restrict access to my data?

• What if I cannot share all my data?

By the end of the session, participants will have a better understanding of how to prepare and archive their data in TiU Dataverse.

Introductie

Vanaf November 2025 ben ik onderdeel van het team InfoSkills. Vanaf maart 2026 ben ik de nieuwe coördinator InfoSkills omdat Anja eind februari met pensioen gaat. Ik heb er zin in om de InfoSkills tutorials verder te onderhouden en wellicht uit te breiden.

Achtergrond

Ik heb een bachelor en master sociologie behaald aan Tilburg University. Daarna ben ik aan de slag gegaan als docent sociologie aan Universiteit Utrecht. Vervolgens heb ik als onderwijskundige bij de bedrijfsopleidingen tak van een mbo-instelling gewerkt. 

Persoonlijk

In mijn vrije tijd vind ik het leuk om te sporten, momenteel is mijn favoriete sport squash. Ook vind ik het leuk om te koken. Mijn vakanties breng ik het liefst samen met mijn vriend in de bergen door, in de zomer op een fiets of te voet, en in de winter op ski’s.

New LIS Research Support colleague: Marjan van Lier

Marjan started as our new LIS Research Support colleague in November 2025. She introduces herself in this blog post. 

Introduction

Since November 2025 I am part of the InfoSkills team. From March 2026 I will be the new coordinator InfoSkills because Anja will retire at the end of February. I am looking forward to further maintaining and perhaps expanding the InfoSkills tutorials.

Background

I obtained a bachelor's and master's degree in sociology at Tilburg University. After that, I started working as a sociology lecturer at Utrecht University. I then worked as an educationalist at the business training branch of an MBO institution. 

Personal

In my spare time I like to play sports, currently my favorite sport is squash. I also like to cook. I prefer to spend my holidays in the mountains with my boyfriend, in the summer on a bike or on foot, and in the winter on skis.

In this series, we invite our authors and editors to share the story behind their book and their experience with publishing at Open Press, and their reflections.

In this post, we speak with Prof. Dr. Archibald van Wieringen and Dr. Frank G. Bosman about their book Bible and video games: An inquiry into an academic terra incognita. At first glance, the Bible and video games may seem worlds apart. Yet this interdisciplinary volume shows how biblical stories, themes, and theological ideas continue to resonate in today’s digital culture, from explicitly Christian games to major international franchises. Bringing together insights from biblical studies and game studies, the book opens up a new field of research at the intersection of religion, culture, and interactive media.

Could you briefly introduce your book and what motivated you to develop it?

Our book explores the reception of the Bible in video games. It brings together theory, case studies, and practical insights. The motivation came from noticing the importance of the Bible in modern contemporary culture as well.

What do you hope readers or the academic community will take from your book?

Our goal is to encourage readers to rethink how the Bible is present in video games and how video games can be used in studying the Bible. The book invites academics and students to be aware of the broad cultural richness that can be found in any kind of intertextuality with the Bible.

What led you to choose Open Press Tilburg University for this publication?

Open Press Tilburg University’s strong commitment to open access and academic integrity aligned seamlessly with our book and the topics of video games and the Bible. Their transparent publishing philosophy and focus on scholarly collaboration made them a natural partner for our project.

All Dutch Universities, united in UNL (Universities of the Netherlands), have agreed with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to monitor the percentage of open access scientific publications annually. This is necessary to meet the earlier objective of making all Dutch scientific publications, that are publicly funded, openly accessible.

OA classification

Publications are classified into different Open Access categories, namely:

A: Gold Open Access, articles published in journals included in DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals)

B: Hybrid Open Access, articles published in non-DOAJ journals

C: Green Open Access, articles published in Trusted Open Repositories

D: Closed Access, articles published in closed Journals

Calculating OA: then and now

Until 2024, each Dutch university calculated its own OA percentages based on common criteria for classifying articles into the above categories. Part of this process could be carried out automatically, but another significant part still had to be done manually. Starting this year, the calculation is performed at the national level for all universities by UKB-SIS. This reduces the manual work for the individual universities and ensures that the calculation was performed in the same way for everyone. It also prevents publications linked to authors from different universities from being counted multiple times.

OA percentages in 2024

In 2024, the total percentage of scientific open access publications for all Dutch Universities was 95%. Of these, 30% were gold OA, 46% hybrid OA and 19% green OA. For Tilburg University the total OA percentage was 97%, of which 23% were gold, 52% hybrid and 22% green. In 2016, the total OA percentage for all universities was still 58% , and by 2024 this percentage has risen to 95%. We can therefore conclude that all Dutch universities have made enormous efforts to make their publications openly accessible.

Desired future developments

In their Open Science Ambition Document Dutch Universities have indicated that they want to promote publications by their researchers in so-called diamond open access journals, so that scientific articles become openly accessible at no costs to readers and authors. We now see that a relatively large portion of open access articles are published as hybrid open access, which means that universities have to enter into financial agreements with publishers in order to publish a maximum number of open access articles in journals with a subscription-based revenue model.

Dutch Universities also have the ambition to make more types of publications openly accessible, such as books and book chapters.

How can you help?

We are proud to have achieved such a high percentage of open access scientific articles, but you as a researcher can help us achieve a score of 100% by:

• adding an open access full-text version of your publication to our trusted repository via Pure. The Taverne regulations allow you to add an OA file six months after your article has been published in the journal
• adding the DOI of your publication in Pure. This makes it easier for us to automatically determine whether a publication is openly accessible or not.

Voor Tilburg University is open access een belangrijk onderwerp. Door onderzoek open access te publiceren onder een vrije licentie kan het materiaal door iedereen worden geraadpleegd, verspreid en hergebruikt. Open access is daarmee een belangrijk onderdeel van de transitie naar Open Science.

 Wat niet iedereen weet is dat universiteitsbibliotheken wereldwijd een belangrijk aandeel hebben in de financiering en ondersteuning van verschillende vormen van open access. Zo ook de Universiteitsbibliotheek Tilburg. De UB ziet vooral diamond open access als een duurzaam, betaalbaar en eerlijk model voor wetenschappelijk publiceren van boeken en tijdschriften. Diamond open access initiatieven bieden kosteloze toegang tot publicaties en vragen geen bijdrage van auteurs. Deze initiatieven hebben meestal geen winstoogmerk en worden geleid door wetenschappers. Ze zijn vaak afhankelijk van externe financiering om operationeel te blijven.  
 
De Universiteitsbibliotheek Tilburg ondersteunt al jaren betrouwbare initiatieven op dit terrein. We steunen programma’s voor het open access maken van tijdschriften zoals bijvoorbeeld Open Library of Humanities, Programming Historian en Annual Reviews, maar ook van boeken zoals bijvoorbeeld Opening the Future, Open Book Collective, Arc Humanities Press en natuurlijk Open Press Tilburg University, onze eigen open access uitgeverij. 
 
Het afgelopen jaar heeft de bibliotheek haar financiële steun aan diamond open access initiatieven op het gebied van de humanities en digital sciences verder uitgebreid, in nauwe samenwerking met onderzoekers.  
De UB steunt vanaf dit jaar ook het programma  Open Commons of Phenomenology (OCP). Deze non-profit organisatie heeft als doel om wetenschappelijke publicaties op het gebied van de fenomenologie vrij toegankelijk te maken voor iedereen. OCP wordt via crowdfunding gefinancierd door een consortium van bibliotheken. 

Een ander initiatief dat we steunen is ‘LUP Open Languages’ van Liverpool University Press. Dit initiatief heeft tot doel om hoogwaardige tijdschriften op het gebied van taal, literatuur en cultuur vrij toegankelijk te maken voor iedereen. Onze financiële steun omvat een abonnement op een aantal tijdschriften en verloopt via het Subscribe to Open model. Bij voldoende deelname van andere bibliotheken en organisaties aan dit LUP-programma, wordt de inhoud van de tijdschriften van dit jaar vrij toegankelijk gemaakt voor iedereen, zonder kosten voor auteurs. Bijkomend voordeel van dit abonnement is dat de UB zo ook toegang heeft tot de archieven van de betreffende tijdschriften. 

Een derde nieuw initiatief dat de UB sinds dit jaar steunt is Luminos, het open access programma voor monografieën van de University of California Press (UCP). De financiële steun van diverse bibliotheken helpt deze uitgever om af te stappen van Book Processing Charges voor een gedeelte van haar boekenfonds. De boeken zijn vervolgens open access beschikbaar voor iedereen.

Tilburg University Library supports new diamond open access initiatives

Open access is an important issue for Tilburg University. By publishing research under a free license, the material can be consulted, distributed, and reused by anyone. Open access is therefore an important part of the transition to Open Science.

Not everyone knows that university libraries worldwide play an important role in financing and supporting various forms of open access. This also applies to Tilburg University Library. Diamond open access in particular is seen by the University Library as a sustainable, affordable, and fair model for the scientific publication of books and journals. Diamond open access initiatives offer free access to publications and do not require authors to pay a fee. These initiatives are usually non-profit and led by scientists. They often depend on external funding to remain operational. 

Tilburg University Library has been supporting reliable initiatives in this area for many years. We support programs for making journals open access, such as Open Library of Humanities, Programming Historian, and Annual Reviews, as well as programs for making books open access such as Opening the Future, Open Book Collective, Arc Humanities Press, and, of course, Open Press Tilburg University, our own open access press. 

Over the past year, the library has further expanded its financial support for diamond open access initiatives in the humanities and digital sciences, in close collaboration with researchers. Starting this year, the University Library also supports the Open Commons of Phenomenology (OCP) program. This non-profit organization aims to make scientific publications in the field of phenomenology freely accessible to everyone. OCP is funded through crowdfunding by a consortium of libraries. 

Another initiative we support is Liverpool University Press's LUP Open Languages. This initiative aims to make high-quality journals in the fields of language, literature, and culture freely accessible to everyone. Our financial support includes a subscription to a number of journals and is based on the Subscribe to Open model. If enough other libraries and organizations participate in this LUP program, the content of this year's journals will be made freely accessible to everyone, at no cost to authors. An additional advantage of this subscription is that the University Library also has access to the archives of the journals in question. 

A third new initiative that the University Library has been supporting since this year is Luminos, the open access program for monographs published by the University of California Press (UCP). Financial support from various libraries is helping this publisher to move away from Book Processing Charges for part of its book collection. The books are then made available to everyone via open access.

Looking at the word cloud of our recent blog posts, it is obvious that we talk a lot about Open Access and Open Science. We feel our blog posts should match our support for the open nature of research and knowledge exchange. This is why we have decided to publish future posts under a Creative Commons license. Up to date information

We realize some of our posts are of a more temporary nature than others and having old posts show up in search results can be confusing. Examples of these are posts announcing upcoming events or information about database trial periods, which are of limited interest once the events or trials have ended. We will remove these posts after a while to prevent confusion. Other posts may be updated to reflect changes in policy since the posts were published.

Op 28 oktober 2025 brachten medewerkers van het team (LIS) Research Support een werkbezoek aan de bibliotheek van Maastricht University, op de locatie Randwyck. Tijdens een inspirerendedag werd werden kennis en ervaringen uitgewisseld.

Na een hartelijke ontvangst met koffie en (uiteraard!) echte Limburgse vlaai presenteerden de collega's van Maastricht een aantal diensten en producten, met applicaties gebouwd door ontwikkelaars binnen het eigen organisatieonderdeel. 

Aan bod kwamen:

• Een toepassing om het voor onderzoekers eenvoudiger te maken om aanvragen voor onderzoeksprojecten in te dienen. Informatie gerelateerd aan AVG, ethiek, DMP e.d. worden zoveel mogelijk binnen één platform geregistreerd en gegevens hoeven maar eenmalig te worden ingevoerd.
• Een toepassing waarmee onderzoekers zelf informatie over hun eigen onderzoek kunnen opvragen, bijvoorbeeld voor het aanvragen van grants.
• De activiteiten rond het monitoren van de eigen Open Science activiteiten, o.a. door het importeren van datasets in Pure en het rapporteren van Open Science indicatoren via een dashboard.
• Een toepassing voor de backoffice medewerkers van de bibliotheek voor beter inzicht in, en het eenvoudiger verwerken van, de bibliotheekcollectie.
• De werkzaamheden van het team Systematic Literature Reviews.
• Een presentatie van Tilburg over de keuze voor DSpace als repository.

Allemaal presentaties die als inspiratie kunnen dienen voor eventuele aanpassing van onze eigen dienstverlening. Hoewel er op dit moment geen concrete plannen zijn voor eigen vergelijkbare projecten houden we je natuurlijk op de hoogte van nieuwe ontwikkelingen via dit weblog.

Met dank aan de University Library van Maastricht University, en uiteraard alle medewerkers die ons zo hartelijk ontvingen en hun kennis deelden. Mogelijk krijgt deze uitwisseling nog een vervolg waarbij de collega's uit Maastricht uiteraard van harte welkom zijn in Tilburg.

Visit to Maastricht University Library

On 28 October 2025, employees of the (LIS) Research Support team paid a working visit to the library of Maastricht University, at the Randwyck location. During an inspiring day, knowledge and experiences were exchanged.

After a warm welcome with coffee and (of course!) real 'Limburgse vlaai' (the best kind of pie), the colleagues from Maastricht presented several services and products, with applications built by developers within their own organizational unit. 

The following were discussed:

• An application to make it easier for researchers to submit applications for research projects. Information related to GDPR, ethics, DMP, etc. are registered within a single platform as much as possible and data only needs to be entered once.
• An application that allows researchers to request information about their own research, for example to apply for grants.
• Activities related to the monitoring of its own Open Science activities, done by importing datasets into Pure and reporting Open Science indicators via a dashboard.
• An application for the library's back-office staff to better understand and simplify the processing of the library's collection.
• The work of the Systematic Literature Reviews team.
• A presentation by Tilburg about choosing DSpace as a repository.

Each of these presentations can serve as inspiration for any changes to our own services. Although there are currently no specific plans for similar projects, we will of course keep you informed via this weblog if anything new is being developed.

Thanks to the University Library of Maastricht University, and of course all the staff who welcomed us so warmly and shared their knowledge. There may be a follow-up to this exchange, in which case colleagues from Maastricht are of course very welcome in Tilburg.

Bij de Tilburg University Library ondersteunen we onderzoekers in het open toegankelijk maken van hun werk. Eén van de manieren waarop we dit doen, is door deel te nemen aan een reeks overeenkomsten met wetenschappelijke uitgevers. Deze overeenkomsten zijn bedoeld om het publiceren in open access te vereenvoudigen voor corresponderende auteurs die verbonden zijn aan de universiteit.

Niet alle overeenkomsten werken echter op dezelfde manier. Sommige, zoals die met Springer, Taylor & Francis en Oxford University Press (OUP), zijn quota-gebaseerd. Dit betekent dat er voor elk jaar dat onder de overeenkomst valt, een vast aantal artikelen is dat open access kan worden gepubliceerd zonder kosten voor de auteur. Zodra dit jaarlijkse quotum (of cap) is bereikt, komen nieuw geaccepteerde artikelen onder die overeenkomst niet meer in aanmerking voor gratis open access. Aan het begin van elk nieuw jaar, binnen de looptijd van de overeenkomst, wordt een nieuw quotum beschikbaar gesteld voor dat jaar, totdat het opnieuw is bereikt.

Voor 2025 zijn de quota’s voor Springer, Taylor & Francis en OUP nu bereikt.

Als je artikel is geaccepteerd nadat het quotum was bereikt, komt het artikel niet langer in aanmerking voor gratis open access. Auteurs kunnen zelf de APC van de uitgever betalen om open access te publiceren, of publiceren volgens het traditionele (closed access) model.

Als je hebt ingediend en je artikel is geaccepteerd nadat het quotum was bereikt

Je hebt nog steeds verschillende mogelijkheden om je onderzoek toegankelijk te maken:

• Als je kiest voor het traditionele (closed access) model, kunnen artikelen van auteurs van Tilburg University die achter een betaalmuur zijn gepubliceerd, zes maanden na publicatie alsnog openbaar beschikbaar worden gemaakt via onze institutionele repository. Dit gebeurt volgens de Tilburg University Open Access Procedureregeling, gebaseerd op de Taverne Amendment. Let op: als je onderzoek wordt gefinancierd door een cOAlition S-organisatie (bijv. NWO, European Commission/ERC), voldoet deze route niet volledig aan de open access-eisen van je financier
• Als je financiering voor APC’s wilt verkennen: de Tilburg University Library heeft geen centraal fonds voor APC’s. Auteurs die financiële ondersteuning nodig hebben, kunnen contact opnemen met het hoofd van hun afdeling om mogelijke financieringsopties te bespreken

• Overweeg te publiceren in Diamond Open Access-tijdschriften. Deze tijdschriften brengen geen kosten in rekening voor auteurs of lezers. Open Access Quotas Reached for Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Oxford University Press

At Tilburg University Library, we support researchers in making their work openly accessible. One of the ways we do this is by participating in a range of agreements with academic publishers. These agreements aim to simplify open access publishing for corresponding authors affiliated with the university.

However, not all agreements function in the same way. Some, such as those with Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Oxford University Press (OUP), are quota-based. This means that, for each year covered by the agreement, there is a set number of articles that can be published open access at no cost to the author. Once this annual quota (or cap) is reached, any new articles accepted for publication under that agreement are no longer eligible for free open access. At the start of each new year, under the term of the agreement, a new quota becomes available for that year, lasting until it is again reached.

For 2025, the quotas for Springer, Taylor & Francis, and OUP have now been reached.

If your article is accepted after the cap was reached, the article will no longer qualify for free open access. Authors can either pay themselves the publisher’s APC to publish open access; or publish under the traditional (closed access) model.

If you have submitted and your article has been accepted after the cap was reached

You still have several options to make your research accessible:

• If you choose the traditional (closed access) model, articles by Tilburg University authors that are published behind a paywall can still be made publicly available six months after publication through our institutional repository. This is done under the Tilburg University Open Access Procedural Regulation, based on the Taverne Amendment. Please note that if your research is funded by a cOAlition S organization (e.g., NWO, European Commission/ERC), this route does not fully meet your funder’s open access requirements.
• If you wish to explore funding for APCs, Tilburg University Library does not have a central fund for APCs. Authors who require financial support can contact the head of their department to discuss potential funding options.

If you have not yet submitted your manuscript

If you are still deciding where to publish, consider the following:

• Consider publishing in Diamond Open Access journals. These journals do not charge authors or readers. While they may not cover every field, many reputable Diamond OA journals exist and could be a sustainable, equitable alternative.
  A useful starting point is the recent curated list of Diamond OA journals in the Netherlands, created through the “Mapping and Monitoring Diamond OA in the Netherlands” project, part of Strengthening Diamond OA in the Netherlands.
• For researchers funded by cOAlition S organizations, please apply the Rights Retention Strategy early in the submission process. This allows you to retain the right to share your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) openly, even if the publisher has restrictive policies. More information is available here.
