<title>Why social change is so excruciatingly difficult - Volts</title>
<description>When we look across the broad sweep of human history, what needs explaining is not times of rebellion and upheaval, but the much more common periods of unjust rule facing little resistance. Why do people so often internalize the ideologies upholding systems under which they suffer? Why do they fail to fight back? Psychologist John Jost has an answer. I talked it over with him.

<title>Field Notes | Staple Day: The “1943” Edition and When Books Went to War</title>
<description>In this episode we’re discussing Field Notes 69th Quarterly release for the winter of 2025. Many of our limited editions have explored interesting chapters in the history of American, printing, publishing and design and this one goes deep (and sideways) into just such a story.

The “1943” Edition includes unique Two-Way Memo Books and a special edition of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, published by Field Notes Brand Books.

Starting in 1943, the American government and publishing industry collaborated on creating what came to be known as the Armed Services Editions. More than 120 million books representing over 1,200 titles were printed and distributed to troops overseas during the Second World War. Until now, that list did not include the Falcon.

In this podcast Kevin Guilfoile chats with Molly Guptill Manning, author of When Books Went to War, the definitive account of the history of Armed Services Editions.

<title>Mostly Horror: E209: The Legend of Ochi (A24): Isaiah Saxon on Bold Fantasy &amp; Handmade Worlds</title>
            <description>Hey horror fans!

This week we’re joined by Isaiah Saxon, director of A24’s The Legend of Ochi and co-founder of the visionary film and animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura.

We talk about Isaiah’s early creative roots, from drawing and stop-motion to building the kid-focused platform DIY.org, and how all of that shaped his unique approach to storytelling. Then we dive deep into the stunning handmade world of Carpathia—filled with puppets, animatronics, painted maps, 1930s lenses, and big heart.

Isaiah shares what it was like working with Willem Dafoe and Helena Zengel, how he blends mythology and music, and why he believes films should feel like moving paintings instead of hyper-reality.

We left this conversation genuinely inspired; Isaiah is someone bringing magic back to movies in a way we haven’t seen in a long time.

If you’re into bold storytelling, weird creatures, and fantasy flicks from the ’80s and ’90s, this one’s for you so...

COME HANG OUT!!!

<title>Keg de Souza: The Politics of Plants | SBS Audio</title>
<description>Keg de Souza, an architecturally trained artist of Goan ancestry, sees plants as living witnesses whose roots trace journeys of migration, displacement and survival. From the colonial spread of eucalyptus to the politics embedded in everyday landscapes, her work asks us to look closer. In her latest project 'Plant Trials', a residency with the Melbourne Arts Precinct and the University of Melbourne, she turns a rooftop garden into a living laboratory investigating which plants can thrive in a changing climate to shape resilient urban landscapes.

<title>Dragons: From Eden to Middle Earth - Gone Medieval | Acast</title>
<description>Step into a torch-lit world where dragons weren’t just monsters—they were symbols of power, chaos, faith and fear. Dr. Eleanor Janega explores the fire-breathing creatures that haunted the imagination of the Middle Ages. From the serpentine wyrms lurking beneath castles to the crowned basilisks whose gaze could kill, dragons shaped medieval mythology, religion and heraldry in profound ways.

Eleanor is joined by Dr. Sam Riches to uncover how dragons were used to represent everything from Satanic evil to royal might.

<description>Laurel and I take a stroll through Central park on Memorial day: chatting about the idea of a sauntercast (a walking podcast), voice notes, memory, the romance of distance, physicality, screenshots, printers, embodiment, energy, perception, ultralight, ordinary time. I certainly felt both the messiness and the surprise of being outside!

<title>The Ultra-Rich Are Building a Separate World Here on Earth - Odd Lots - Omny.fm</title>
<description>In recent years, we've seen the emergence of cities whose main industry is that they're a great place to live if you're rich. Dubai would be the ultimate example of this dynamic. But it's not just Dubai. Lots of cities, all around the world, exist to cater to the wealthy, with a set of laws and taxation schemes that act like a magnet for global wealth. So how do these cities work? How big are they? And what exactly do they offer the global rich? On this episode of the podcast, we speak with Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, author of The Hidden Globe: How Wealth Hacks The World. She talks about these booming types of cities, how they emerged, and where they are going.

<description>Billy Guidoni talks with Al Johnson, groundbreaker, innovator, avant-garder and singer of Snailboy, Shorty, Mount Shasta and U.S. Maple.

Al talks about not standing the sound of his voice, changing his approach to singing, playing on the edge of failure night after night, a certain blue collar ethic, achieving space and balance, being out of social media to be a dad, the feeling of having his music passed to him, and many other things.

Enjoy a special conversation with a very special artist.

<title>Berkeley Perfumer Mandy Aftel on the 'Curious and Wondrous World of Fragrance' | KQED</title>
<description>“You don’t just smell an aroma; you fall into it,” writes artisan perfumer Mandy Aftel. And entering her exquisite small museum, the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents, tucked into a backyard in Berkeley, is to fall into an ancient, mysterious world. Amid centuries-old books, bottles and curios are natural fragrances that come from the secretions of civets and the bowels of sperm whales, as well as from resins, rare flowers, roots and so much more. We talk to Aftel about her collection, the art of building a fragrance, and her new book, “The Museum of Scent: Exploring the Curious and Wondrous World of Fragrance”.
