Applying for Your Driving Test in Ireland

In order to apply for a driving test, you must be at least 17 years old and hold a valid learner permit issued by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

The Eye Test

To obtain a learner permit, you will need to pass an eyesight test and theory test, which can be taken at any RSA-approved centre.

The eyesight test involves reading out letters from a chart at 6 meters distance from each eye separately.

Once you have your learner permit, you are legally allowed to drive with a fully qualified driver who has held their full license for two or more years.

EDT Driving Lessons

The Road Safety Authority has made it mandatory that every new entrant who wants to learn to drive has to sit the mandatory 12 EDT Driving Lessons before they will issue you with a driving test date.

Any driver who has been issued a learner permit on or after 04/04/2011 is required now by law to sit the mandatory 12 EDT Driving lessons.

As you complete each module your registered Ladybird approved driving instructor will record the progress in your RSA EDT driving lesson logbook.

Pretest Driving Lessons

When you feel confident enough that you’re ready after your pretest driving lessons to take the next step and apply for the driving test itself, it’s important that you make sure that the driving instructor accompanying you on this stage is approved by the RSA like all of our instructors at Ladybird are.

The RSA will then assess your skills in terms of control of road speed, use of signals and other relevant manoeuvres when it comes time for them take their assessment.

When booking your practical test appointment with the RSA – either online or via telephone – there are certain criteria that must be met before they will accept it as valid:

Your chosen ADI should supervise minimal of two hours of additional practice prior to taking the practical exam so that they can accurately assess how prepared and safe you are on the roads and ensure that all aspects required by the RSA are covered adequately.

Furthermore, ADIs may suggest ways in which students may improve their driving prior to undergoing their final driving test with the RSA examiner, such as:

During your driving test itself, there are several elements that must be passed successfully such as manoeuvres like:

After completion of these tasks outlined above successfully without serious faults being committed throughout each component of tests taken the RSA tester will inform you if you passed or not.

If successful in passing your full driving test, you will then receive your new licence card allowing you access to use public roads independently!

This driving licence should arrive within 10 days after passing online tests presented by The Road Safety Authority (RSA).

Total Cost To Pass The Irish Driving Test

In total, you will spend approximately €650-€850 on passing your Irish driving test.

The most expensive part of the driving test is getting enough lessons to be ready for it.

It is at least €40-€50 per driving lesson and you will need at least 12 EDT lessons before you are ready to go for your test.

For this reason, it can be very helpful to get a good driving instructor who will encourage you to go for your test when you are ready rather than trying to string out your lessons so that they make more money.

In order to take the full driving test, you must have passed the EDT program (Essential Driver Training).

This consists of 12 EDT lessons which cost €40-€50 each. You must complete 12 EDT lessons before you can apply for your learner permit.

Once your learner permit has been granted, you are eligible to start the essential driving training.

Then when your EDT is complete and signed off by your driving instructor and submitted to MyEDT your instructor will be able to evaluate your driving ability and give you advice on when you should complete your full driving test.

You’ll just need to have your vehicle registration number handy (it’s on your car logbook – and don’t worry if you’ve just had to order another one because there are plenty of ways of finding out what it is without needing the logbook itself).

Putting off booking your NCT is something quite popular in Ireland. A lot of people do, but the reality is that it could be a more straightforward process than you realise.

In fact, many of the steps are surprisingly easy. Here are the things to know before you start:

The NCT (National Car Test) is a mandatory safety and emissions test for vehicles over 4 years old. In order to keep your car on the road, you’ll need to get it booked in for an NCT every two years.

How to Book Your NCT

The whole process can seem a bit daunting, especially if it’s your first time doing it, so we’ve broken down the procedure into easy-to-follow steps:

1. Click here https://www.ncts.ie/ to book an appointment online or call 1890 40 60 40 (lines open Mon-Fri 8am-8pm, Saturday 9am-5pm)
2. You’ll need to have your vehicle registration number on hand (it can be found on your car logbook).
3. When your appointment has been made, you’ll receive a text message with the location of which test centre you should go to.
4. Take your vehicle and documentation and a form of ID (Licence/Passport) to the testing centre at the designated time slot (make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes early).
5. Wait for the results of your test! If there are issues with your vehicle, they will be recorded on a list of advisory comments.

If there is anything that needs immediate attention you will be informed immediately. If any problems are not urgent, you will receive an advisory slip after.

Get Your NCT Date & Location

Whether your a plumber, roofer, locksmith or a driving instructor once you’ve chosen a date and location, all there is left to do is make sure your car is ready for its NCT test.

The mechanics will check your vehicle’s tires, steering, brakes, and lights. If there’s anything that doesn’t pass inspection or needs additional work, they’ll let you know what will need fixing before you can retest.

It’s also good practice to check your oil and water levels before going in. The handbook that came with your car should tell you how often you should change them out; if it’s been less than six months since the last time they were changed, then there most likely isn’t a problem.

Once you have that, simply go over the page here and follow the steps! It’s as easy as that!

Why It’s Important to Have NCT on Your Car

The NCT is an important part of vehicle ownership. You must get your car tested if it was registered after January 1, 2004, and you must do so every two years.

The NCT is designed to make sure that your car is safe for you to drive.

In the best-case scenario, you will pass the test on the first try and have your certificate in hand very quickly.

My Car Failed The NCT! What now?

But what if things don’t go as planned and your car fails the test? Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

If your car fails its NCT, you can still leave with it on the day of your test as long as it’s considered roadworthy.

You will receive a list of failures from the examiner that explain why it didn’t pass the test.

You will then have 28 days to make repairs and retest your vehicle at no extra cost.

We’ve had many learners who needed to book their NCT quickly after having failed a test somewhere else, with only a few days left before their current certificates expired.

We’ve also had many learners who needed to book an emergency appointment because they had not realised that their certificates were due to expire—until they were pulled over by Gardaí while driving without one!

The quicker you do it, the quicker you’ll have your registration number, and the less likely you are to forget about it. And that’s all there is to it!

Have your Vehicle Registration Number, Personal Identification Number (PIN – You get this by text or email when your Motor Tax is due.), Insurance Certificate and email address handy.

To tax your car or van online, you will need to follow these steps:

• Go to www.motortax.ie
• Enter your vehicle reg number, your PIN, current tax disc number and insurance details (when prompted).
• Select the vehicle you wish to tax from the menu on the left-hand side.
• You will be asked to select one of three available options – Disconnect, Change Vehicle or Tax Vehicle.
• You will be directed to a form for completion for taxation of your vehicle.
• Select the method of payment – Credit/Debit Card or An Post – depending on choice you will have to enter certain information and follow instructions.
• If payment is successful, save and / or print receipt as proof of payment and keep it in the vehicle at all times until a new tax disc is received in the post.

However, that being said, it’s not exactly a walk in the park either. There are some rules and steps you have to go through to renew your driver’s licence in Ireland.

To renew your driving license in Ireland, you must first ensure that your current license is still valid.

If it has expired, you will need to reapply for a new license. You can renew your license up to six months before it is set to expire.

To renew your license, you will need to complete a D401 application form, or at any NDLS center.

You will also need to provide proof of identification, such as your passport or national identity card, and proof of address, such as a utility bill.

Once you have completed the application form and gathered the necessary documents, you can submit your application in person at any NDLS center.

You will need to pay a fee to renew your license, which is currently €55.

If your license has been expired for more than two years, you will need to retake the driving test in order to have it renewed.

So just a little update as to our situation with bookings. So we have a 1.5 year backlog of pupils just like yourself trying to get their lessons finished and/or started.

We have literally hundreds of people like yourself now all looking for lessons and we try our best to look after everyone.

In this podcast we speak with Dane Tyghe who with over 5 Million views on his YouTube channel on all things driving related, we examine the mentality that new learner drivers have in relation to 12 EDTs being a target rather than a starter course.

Everyday pupils are presenting for their Driving Test after 12 EDT lessons or 14 lessons maybe even 16 lessons and realising they have failed miserably but fail to understand why that is or how they failed.

Our experience is that for a number of reasons these EDT drivers feel that they have reached the 12 lesson target and therefore can apply and sit the test and pass it.

We Know it’s not as simple as that and the purpose of this great podcast is so new learners can benefit from it and not make the same mistakes previous drivers have by realising that you must have excellent car control and even better hazard awareness that only develops over time.

On average it takes 40-45 on road hours to be somewhat ready to pass a test. Remember you want the full licence from the tester therefore you need to show you deserve it and are able to drive alone without any issues.
