About the Conference

The Art of Writing conference will be held on November 6 in Nashville at the Sonesta Nashville Airport Hotel, Tennessee. This focused, four-session conference will bring together writers, storytellers, and publishing professionals, curated by Thomas Nelson Fiction's Laura Wheeler.

Session One: State of the Industry: What's Changing, What's Selling, and What You Can Do About It

The Christian fiction marketplace is shifting—and the authors who thrive will be the ones who understand why. This panel of publishing professionals opens with a data-driven look at the current state of Christian publishing, drawing on the latest market research to map what's actually moving books today. From there, the conversation gets practical: how platform sales really work, what authors can do to actively support their books, and why audio is the format no one can afford to ignore. Whether you're traditionally published or exploring indie paths, you'll leave with a clearer picture of the industry landscape and concrete next steps for your own author education.

Session Three: Soul of the Writer, Heart of the Story: Writing Fiction That Reaches Every Reader

The metrics are loud. The algorithms are relentless. And somewhere in the middle of it all, there's a writer trying to create something that actually matters. This session begins with the writer and asks what it takes to stay spiritually and creatively whole in an industry that never stops measuring. From that foundation, the conversation moves into craft: how do you write fiction that carries deep conviction without losing readers who don't share your faith? What's the difference between a story that illuminates and one that lectures? How do you make those choices at the level of character, scene, and structure? This is a session for authors who believe their stories are for something—and want to write them in a way that proves it.

About the Author

Donna Wyland is an award-winning author of fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Her most recent gift book, Last Best Year – A Short Guide to a Grateful Life – is a Golden Scroll Awardhere Winner, and her picture books, ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus and Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts were both Readers’ Choice Award Finalists.‘Twas the Night Before Jesus also won the Illumination Award Silver Medal and Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts was the Christian Indie Award winner for picture books.

Though she began a career in financial planning, God interrupted those plans and called her to write more than twenty years ago. Donna responded, “Yes, Lord,” and today has numerous books, essays, and blogs attributed to her name.

In the future, Donna hopes to continue writing guided journals to encourage and inspire people’s faith and confidence in God and themselves. As a Certified Christian Life Coach, Donna learned the value of asking powerful questions. My Thoughts

Practicing gratitude has been a daily habit of mine for a few years now. Basically I've just been recording each day something for which I am grateful.

The idea of a guided gratitude journal appealed to me, with giving me some prompts to help me recognize something new to write in my faith journal.

I like A Guided Gratitude Journal. Each day begins with a paragraph or two of thoughts by the author, followed by a list of questions to help you recognize something specific for which to be grateful, even asking why you're grateful and how it impacts your life.

At the back of the book are several daily gratitude pages on which to record what you're grateful for.

If you're looking for a resource to assist you in developing the habit of gratitude, I recommend A Guided Gratitude Journal.

This journal was inspired by God and written as a result of many personal losses in my life. As I tried to move toward healing, I felt like I was still walking under a dark cloud each day, faking happiness and joy as I went about my responsibilities as a wife, mother, and grandmother. I was still hurting and desperately wanted to know why. That’s when I did a deep dive on the topic of gratitude and discovered its tremendous power to heal.

I pray that this journal becomes a legacy of readers’ journeys to joy, emotional and physical health, peace, and a thankful way of life. God knows you and sees you. He is excited to hear your praise and watch you grow into a gratitude-filled man or woman of God who lights the world on fire simply by being your wonderful, beautiful, joyful self.

— The story of Lilly the lamb

“Meet Lilly, the wandering lamb every one of us has been.”

Did you know that God sings over us? Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love, He will no longer rebuke you but will rejoice over you with singing.” Yet often, like sheep, we wander away, too caught up in our desires to hear His song.

In a green pasture bordered by gentle hills, there lived a shepherd who knew each of his sheep by name. He was a kind Master who watched over his flock day and night, singing songs of love and protection as he tended them. Among his sheep was a young lamb named Lilly, who, like many young ones, had a habit of wandering.

“Lilly, please come back to the flock,” her mother would call, watching her daughter chase butterflies across the field. “You know how dangerous it is out there.” But Lilly was too enchanted by the butterfly’s dance to listen. “Oh, Mama, it’s so much fun! Look how it flutters around my head!” she would laugh, bouncing further away.

Each evening, the master would call his sheep home, counting them by name as they passed through the gate. “Hello, Lilly,” he would say with knowing eyes and a gentle smile. “I see you had quite an adventure with that butterfly today. Try not to wander too far—I wouldn’t want to lose you.”

My Thoughts

From the description at the beginning of Lilly the lamb, and how the shepherd cared so tenderly for his sheep, all the while singing, I was captivated with this devotional Bible study. I had never taken the time to imagine our Good Shepherd singing over us, while caring for us. What a lovely picture!

Throughout this Bible study, we are encouraged to see God as our song, our refuge, our hope, our praise. It is designed to be a five-week Bible study, with five daily devotionals each week. Each day there are a guided prayer, a devotional thought, questions for discussion, thoughts for reflection, activities to do, prompts for journaling.

One activity that captured my attention is to create a timeline of your faith journey, interwoven with life's milestones. It can give you a visual of your personal testimony.

I would like to get copies of this Bible study to give to my daughter and daughters-in-law. It would also be great for a ladies' Bible study group, small group studies, or even as a family Bible study or individual study. If you are looking for your next Bible study for any of these situations, I certainly recommend The Song of Our Heart.

Terrie Todd is a Canadian author of nine historical and split-time novels and one nonfiction book. My Thoughts

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax is the 6th book in the "Enduring Hope" series, and the first book I have read by Terrie Todd. I have enjoyed every book I've read of the series.

I was captivated from the beginning of The Reluctant Healer of Halifax, and willingly lost sleep while reading. I have a deep interest in the history of Nova Scotia, since I have ancestry origins there, so I was especially interested in this novel based on a true event.

The characters are complex and well developed. I enjoyed watching their faith and relationships grow throughout the story. Oliver was a little frustrating at times, the way he thought he knew what was best for Pearline, without even giving her a choice.

Sophia especially captured my heart, and twisted my heart for her and what she witnessed and experienced. If you have a sensitive imagination, there might be parts of this story you may want to avoid, especially when Sophia was describing her drawings in her sketchbook. It is, after all, a story based on a horrific disaster.

If you enjoy historical fiction, with a touch of romance and a dose of faith, I highly recommend this one for your TBR list.

It wasn’t until I was interviewing a friend for a newspaper column that the Halifax Explosion of 1917 began to interest me. My friend, Gene, had gone blind from macular degeneration, and I wanted to write a series of columns about what it was like for him to lose his sight and now live with blindness. One of the books Gene mentioned as having inspired him was the true story of Eric Davidson. At the time of the explosion, Eric was a toddler, playing with his toy car on a windowsill in his Halifax home. The glass exploded, permanently blinding Eric. The north end of Halifax was destroyed, and roughly two thousand residents died. Nine thousand more were wounded, including hundreds blinded or partially blinded by flying glass. The mass blinding helped birth the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). Eric’s daughter, Marilyn Davidson Elliott, wrote the book The Blind Mechanic about her father.

I found Eric’s story fascinating. When given the opportunity to try for a spot in Barbour’s series of books about historical disasters, I decided to write one about the Halifax explosion. The more I researched, the more I wondered why we didn’t learn about this in school, and the harder it was to imagine the devastation that the city and its people survived. This was during a world war and only five years after being highly involved in the recovery of the Titanic’s victims and survivors, a disaster that helped prepare them for this one. Story after story, many revealing the incredible determination of the stalwart people of Nova Scotia and the Bostonians who came to their aid, moved me to tears. It was difficult to choose which experiences to borrow for my characters. I was thrilled to visit Halifax in 2025, a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Naturally, the book includes some blind and partially blind characters. I so appreciate the input from my two blind beta readers, Alexandra Banwell and Leanne Merren. One of my favorite things to do with each book I launch is to choose a charity to which I give a portion of the proceeds from my local book launch. For this book, I’ve chosen the CNIB’s Guide Dog program.

Although my book never became a part of that series, Barbour decided it would be a good fit for their “Enduring Hope” series. The rest is, literally, history. I’m thrilled to be part of this series and have enjoyed the first five immensely. I hope you read them all!

Character a Quality of the Soul {a devotional}

A character formed according to the divine likeness is the only treasure that we can take from this world to the next. Those who are under the instruction of Christ in this world will take every divine attainment with them to the heavenly mansions. And in heaven we are continually to improve....

Mental ability and genius are not character, for these are often possessed by those who have the very opposite of a good character. Reputation is not character. True character is a quality of the soul, revealing itself in the conduct.

A good character is a capital of more value than gold or silver. It is unaffected by panics or failures, and in that day when earthly possessions shall be swept away, it will bring rich returns. Integrity, firmness, and perseverance are qualities that all should seek earnestly to cultivate; for they clothe the possessor with a power which is irresistible—a power which makes him strong to do good, strong to resist evil, strong to bear adversity.

Strength of character consists of two things—power of will and power of self-control. Many youth mistake strong, uncontrolled passion for strength of character; but the truth is that he who is mastered by his passions is a weak man. The real greatness and nobility of the man is measured by his powers to subdue his feelings, not by the power of his feelings to subdue him. The strongest man is he who, while sensitive to abuse, will yet restrain passion and forgive his enemies.

About the Author

Linda Shenton Matchett writes happily-ever-after historical Christian fiction about second chances and women who overcome life’s challenges to be better versions of themselves.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she was born a stone’s throw from Fort McHenry (of Star-Spangled Banner fame) and has lived in historical places all her life. She is a volunteer docent and archivist at the Wright Museum of WWII. She now lives in central New Hampshire where she explores the history of this great state, immerses herself in the imaginary worlds created by other authors, and drinks copious amounts of tea.

My Thoughts

Shetland Sunset is the first book of "The Resistance Chronicles." What a great start to a new series!

World War II is one of my favorite eras of history to read about; I like discovering new aspects of the time period. I admire the courage of the Norwegians, smuggling in supplies and ferrying refugees out of the country, virtually under the Germans' noses...all done during the dark days and nights of winter.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Askel and Tanje grow, and witnessing Tanje's faith grow from a tiny mustard seed, through encouragement from Askel and a couple kind pastors.

If you enjoy Christian historical romance set during World War II, this is a must read. I will admit, I am eager for the rest of the series!

Shetland, also called the Shetland Islands, is an archipelago of about one hundred islands, with fewer than twenty being inhabited. Originally a base for Norwegian Vikings, Shetland came under Scottish rule when King Christian I pledged the island as part of his daughter’s dowry when she was betrothed to James III of Scotland. The island continues to feature an intriguing mix of Norwegian and Scottish heritage in customs, language, and celebrations. Interestingly, Shetland is geographically closer to Norway than Scotland.

The Shetland Bus is the nickname for a World War II clandestine operation during which fishermen smuggled supplies, weapons, radio operators, and agents into occupied Norway and ferried refugees out of Norway to Shetland and England. From 1941-1945, two hundred missions were carried in winter because of the nearly twenty-four hours of darkness that occurred during those months, but that meant crossing in rough, unforgiving seas. Additionally, the risk of being caught by German aircraft or patrol boats was high, and forty-four members lost their lives.

Authors get their ideas and inspiration from many sources, and I learned about the Shetland Bus from an episode of Shetland, a modern-day BBC mystery show that featured a fictional cold case associated with the “bus.” I was able to read multiple memoirs and autobiographies and watch oral history interviews with Shetland Bus participants. It is my hope that Shetland Sunset honors the brave ordinary men who did extraordinary things.

Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you. 2 Corinthians 10:15.

You should keep off from Satan’s enchanted ground and not allow your minds to be swayed from allegiance to God. Through Christ you may and should be happy and should acquire habits of self-control. Even your thoughts must be brought into subjection to the will of God and your feelings under the control of reason and religion. Your imagination was not given you to be allowed to run riot and have its own way without any effort at restraint or discipline. If the thoughts are wrong the feelings will be wrong, and the thoughts and feelings combined make up the moral character.... If you yield to your impressions and allow your thoughts to run in a channel of suspicion, doubt, and repining you will be among the most unhappy of mortals....

Dear Sister F, you have a diseased imagination; and you dishonor God by allowing your feelings to have complete control of your reason and judgment. You have a determined will, which causes the mind to react upon the body, unbalancing the circulation and producing congestion in certain organs; and you are sacrificing health to your feelings.

You are making a mistake, which, if not corrected, will not end with wrecking your own happiness merely. I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2.

We believe without a doubt that Christ is soon coming. This is not a fable to us; it is a reality. We have no doubt, neither have we had a doubt for years, that the doctrines we hold today are present truth, and that we are nearing the judgment. We are preparing to meet Him who, escorted by a retinue of holy angels, is to appear in the clouds of heaven to give the faithful and the just the finishing touch of immortality. When He comes He is not to cleanse us of our sins, to remove from us the defects in our characters, or to cure us of the infirmities of our tempers and dispositions. If wrought for us at all, this work will all be accomplished before that time. When the Lord comes, those who are holy will be holy still. Those who have preserved their bodies and spirits in holiness, in sanctification and honor, will then receive the finishing touch of immortality. But those who are unjust, unsanctified, and filthy will remain so forever. No work will then be done for them to remove their defects and give them holy characters. The Refiner does not then sit to pursue His refining process and remove their sins and their corruption. This is all to be done in these hours of probation. It is now that this work is to be accomplished for us.

We embrace the truth of God with our different faculties, and as we come under the influence of that truth, it will accomplish the work for us which is necessary to give us a moral fitness for the kingdom of glory and for the society of the heavenly angels. We are now in God’s workshop. Many of us are rough stones from the quarry. But as we lay hold upon the truth of God, its influence affects us. It elevates us and removes from us every imperfection and sin, of whatever nature. Thus we are prepared to see the King in His beauty and finally to unite with the pure and heavenly angels in the kingdom of glory. It's My Blogiversary!

It's hard to believe, but 21 years ago today was my very first blog post! It wasn't anything exciting, that first post, but it began my journey into the blogging world. I have tried different platforms, but this one seems the most comfortable for me.

So, I'm taking the plunge, joining the bloggers! Now what?

My first entry will be rather short, since it is past my bedtime--and I'll be turning into a pumpkin pretty soon, if I don't get to bed! So we will try this again tomorrow, if time permits.

Yeah, like I said, really exciting, right? LOL

Today, I decided to integrate my Granmumsy's Musings into my Life on Chickadee Lane blog, with the hopes of adding in more of the subject matter I've intended to share over there...

I guess my main purpose for this blog will to share my thoughts as a granmumsy, mum, and caregiving daughter. It will probably contain a lot of “if only I’d known this back when I was starting to homeschool!” Advice I’d give regarding my grandchild, if only his parents asked me for it. Ha! And pleas for advice on how to navigate this new role of “parenting” my parents, and driving hundreds of miles a week. Yikes!

Some of that isn't even relevant anymore, since I am no longer caring for my parents (they are both deceased now). My oldest son and his wife now have two little boys. My middle son now has a baby on the way.

Oh, yes, I still have my "health blog," The Kitchen on Chickadee Lane. too.

I hope to start posting my Wordless Wednesday posts again, too. I enjoy photography! I've also recently gotten back into penpalling, so you might see mentions of that occassionally, as well.

What is the first thing you want to do when you're suffering pain, pain of any kind? You want to make it stop, right? I know I do. Sometimes it's easier to mask the pain, or bury it deep inside.

Painkillers talks about seven unhealthy ways of dealing with pain: Isolation, Inappropriate Relationships, Independent Spirit, Idolatry, Intoxication, Intellectual Sabotage, and Insecurity. I can relate to multiple methodologies, since I have dealt with them in my life.

Instead of turning to any of these methods of dealing with pain, we are pointed to Jesus, our Pain Taker.

If you are, or someone you know is, dealing with pain of any kind, I recommend Painkillers. It's a quick, practical read.

My Thoughts

When the South Wind Blows is the fourth and final book of the "Blooms of the Bitterbrush" series, and what a delightful series it is.

Elizabeth must abandon her dreams of being on Broadway, and for her safety flees to the extended family's ranch in Idaho. She willingly pitches in, doing household chores, and learning what she can about ranch life.

Ranch hand Logan, aspiring journalist, is suspicious of Elizabeth's story of why she arrived, and is certain there is a story to be told.

I enjoyed watching their relationship grow, in spite of suspicion and caution. This is a satisfying conclusion to the series, which really is best read in order.

If you enjoy sweet, Christian historical romance, with a touch of light suspense, I recommend it for your TBR list.

Chocolate, Chocolate

What part does chocolate play in When the South Wind Blows? To little Susannah, it plays a big part, as Logan is going to help her frost her salvaged cake.

“Miss Lizzie?” Logan hadn’t moved from his spot next to the stove. “If it’s all right with you, may Susannah and I make the frosting for the cake?”

He knew how to make frosting? And again, he included the little girl.

“Thank you. Susannah, why don’t you pull out the cookbook for chocolate that your grandma and I like, and you and Logan will be in charge?”

“Oh yay! The Hershey’s Cookbook? They have the best frosting recipe.”

Yes, in 1934 Hershey’s had published a cookbook, so it would have been well loved and used in the Double E Ranch kitchen in 1950.

And Nestlé’s Toll House cookies weren’t far behind, as Nestlé acquired the rights to the original recipe in 1939. By World War II, the cookies were a staple included in packages sent to US servicemen overseas. Do you think they’d mind that Elizabeth called her version Victory cookies? Though they had nothing to do with the war but a little victory right at home.

High Spiritual State Attainable {a devotional}

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. Jude 24.

Christ was obedient to every requirement of the law....

By His perfect obedience He has made it possible for every human being to obey God’s commandments. When we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united with His heart, the will is merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the thoughts are brought into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it means to be clothed with the garment of His righteousness. Then as the Lord looks upon us He sees, not the fig-leaf garment, not the nakedness and deformity of sin, but His own robe of righteousness, which is perfect obedience to the law of Jehovah.

Through the plan of redemption, God has provided means for subduing every sinful trait, and resisting every temptation, however strong.

The strongest temptation is no excuse for sin. However great the pressure brought to bear upon the soul, transgression is our own act. It is not in the power of earth or hell to compel any one to sin. The will must consent, the heart must yield, or passion cannot overbear reason, nor iniquity triumph over righteousness.

If you will stand under the bloodstained banner of Prince Emmanuel, faithfully doing His service, you need never yield to temptation; for One stands by your side who is able to keep you from falling.

Because man fallen could not overcome Satan with his human strength, Christ came from the royal courts of heaven to help him with His human and divine strength combined. My Thoughts

A Cowboy to Call Her Own is book 1 of Cari Lynn Webb's new series, "The Bluegrass Blackwells." It is set in the heart of Kentucky horse farms, and is wrapped up in horses and horse racing.

It is a sweet story of the growth of friendship between Asher and Kelley, how they work together to help each other out. The before-breakfast dance together which Kelley's sister instigated supposedly in preparation for her wedding was a cute opening.

Having lived in Texas and Montana, I was a little put off by the terms, and somewhat overuse, of "her cowboy" and "his cowgirl." Otherwise it's a fun read.

If you enjoy sweet contemporary romance, with a touch of mystery and a dose of faith, then I suggest this for your TBR list.

Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 2 Timothy 3:13.

It was not God’s purpose that His people should be crowded into cities, huddled together in terraces and tenements. In the beginning He placed our first parents in a garden amidst the beautiful sights and attractive sounds of nature, and these sights and sounds He desires men to rejoice in today.

Light has been given me that the cities will be filled with confusion, violence, and crime, and that these things will increase till the end of this earth’s history.

It is time for our people to take their families from the cities into more retired localities, else many of the youth, and many also of those older in years, will be ensnared and taken by the enemy.

“Out of the cities; out of the cities!”—this is the message the Lord has been giving me.

The turmoil and confusion that fill these cities, the conditions brought about by the labor unions and the strikes, would prove a great hindrance to our work. Men are seeking to bring those engaged in the different trades under bondage to certain unions. This is not God’s planning, but the planning of a power that we should in no wise acknowledge. God’s word is fulfilling; the wicked are binding themselves up in bundles ready to be burned. We are now to use all our entrusted capabilities in giving the last warning message to the world. In this work we are to preserve our individuality. We are not to unite with secret societies or with trade-unions. We are to stand free in God, looking constantly to Christ.

The ungodly cities of our world are to be swept away by the besom of destruction. Evangeline shifted on the wooden bench, noting more passengers gathering in the station. Where had the tall man gone? A sliver of unease slithered down her spine. Gideon’s train would hopefully arrive before the one on which they would return to Manitowish Waters. She couldn’t leave without him, and it was already an overnight trip, arriving in town at noon tomorrow. If they weren’t delayed by the snow.

Another passenger entered along with the strongest gust of wind and snow yet. Evangeline shivered, casting a glance toward the rear door where the tall man had exited. Evan fully believed that she was too trusting, that she was too kind. And yet, Evangeline couldn’t understand why that was such a bad thing. Yes, her brother constantly worried about her safety, but didn’t Jesus ask them to be kind? Wasn’t she supposed to help those in need? What harm could come from watching this man’s luggage while he went to the privy?

Still, perhaps the trouble wasn’t watching the bag. It was what to do if the man never returned.

My Thoughts

The Robber and the Witness is the fourth book in the "Christmas Cabin Historical Romance Novellas" series, in which each can be read as a stand alone. It is a perfect "Christmas in July" read!

This quick read will actually have you shivering from cold, as you follow Gideon, Evangeline, and the rest of the train passengers trek through falling snow and deep snow drifts across the Minnesota state line into Wisconsin. Brr!

I like the sweet camaraderie between Evangeline and Gideon, who have known each other from childhood and are meeting up now as adults. It's sweet how protective Gideon is of Eva, especially with potential danger lurking.

The night smelled of jasmine and smoke.

Torchlight flickered across the marble arches and carved lattice screens, sending shadows skittering along the palace courtyard. I clutched Ghulam’s hand so tightly my nails must have bitten into his skin, but my older brother did not flinch. His other arm wrapped around my sleeve, tugging me close to the shelter of the wall, as if he alone could drag me out of the open expanse and back into the safety of the harem. Somewhere beyond the colonnade, voices shouted, sharp and urgent.

“Stay with me, Noor,” Ghulam whispered as a clash of boots echoed against the pavement.

British soldiers and sepoys burst through the arched gateway, red coats blazing in the torchlight. Brass plates on the tall shakos atop their heads caught the firelight and flashed like coins, while their white trousers looked already dust-stained from battle.

We pressed ourselves deeper into the shadowed edge of the courtyard, hearts hammering, as if stillness alone could keep us invisible.

I hid behind my brave twelve-year- old brother . I was only six, still small enough to believe in whispered promises. We had been awakened in the middle of the night by a servant who coaxed us outside with strange tales of dates and sweets and our mother waiting for us on a moonlit adventure. Of course, we agreed—especially after being confined to our rooms for days while illness swept through the palace. And with Father newly gone, Mother’s absence weighed heavier than ever. She often took us out in the late evening for fresh air and to point out the stars above and teach us their names.

But no treats and no Mother awaited us.

The servant who had lured us away slipped back into the palace, leaving us stranded as the soldiers advanced, muskets leveled and bayonets gleaming sharp and merciless. At their head strode an older man with red hair already streaked with gray, his scarlet coat trimmed in gold and a crimson sash slashed across his chest. His sword gleamed, unsheathed and catching every flicker of flame as he barked for the guards to clear the way. When he saw us, he gestured to my brother and me with a weapon in hand.

“Drag him. And her, if you must,” he said in Urdu.

Within seconds I was yanked from my brother’s side by one of the soldiers and forced to move toward the older man, who stared at me.

I screamed as loud as I could. Where was my mother? Surely the nizam’s guards would rescue us. Why

were they nowhere to be found?

“Let my sister go!” Ghulam cried, but he was powerless against such strong men.

We stumbled over the tiles of the courtyard, our slippered feet sliding in haste, the hem of my purple gown darkening with dust. Shouts erupted behind us, the clipped orders of British soldiers mingling with the sudden wails of women. More torches hissed in the damp night air, signaling an invasion.

“Faster!” the older man snapped as we were driven out of the courtyard.

A soldier’s gloved hand shoved against my shoulder, forcing me forward. My foot caught on the edge of a tile and I pitched to my knees, the stone biting through silk. Pain stung, but I twisted back, clawing against his grip, desperate to wrench free. My gaze flew to the doorway we had just left.

My mother stood there, framed in the lamplight, her jeweled veil slipping loose as she reached for us. Her chest heaved as if she had run as fast as she could.

“Noor! Ghulam!” Her voice broke as the British soldiers barred her way. “Give me my children!”

I screamed again and lurched against the soldier’s grip, grasping for her. She flung her arms toward me as well, her fingers straining as if somehow she could touch me despite the distance.

“Don’t look behind you. Don’t stop,” the older man said fiercely as he grabbed my hand, his grip crushing like an iron band.

My mother’s frantic sobs echoed behind us, mingling with the pounding of boots.

The older man swept me into his arms and hurled me toward a waiting black carriage just beyond the palace gates. Behind us, the great doors of the courtyard gaped open, unguarded and ominously silent.

“Where are they taking us?” I whispered. “Why isn’t Mother coming with us?”

Ghulam’s lips pressed into a thin line. He did not answer. Perhaps he did not know. Perhaps he feared the answer.

Pressing against the window, I strained for some sight of Mother within the courtyard where I had played the day before. A whip cracked. Our carriage lurched. The palace receded into the night, its white domes and minarets shrinking until only the stars remained above.

I sank against the cushioned seat, my body shaking. My brother wrapped an arm around me, awkward and stiff, but protective all the same.

“We’ll be all right,” he said through gritted teeth. “I won’t let anything happen to you. I prom—”

“Listen to me,” the old man interrupted. “Do you know who I am?” I sniffled and shook my head.

“I am your grandfather, Colonel Richard Grenville. When I learned of your father’s untimely demise and rumors of diphtheria gutting the city, I came all the way from London to find you.”

“ I-I want my m- mother,” I demanded as I shivered uncontrollably.

He leaned forward, the leather seat creaking beneath his weight. “You must never speak of her again. You are going to live with me at my estate. You both will learn to speak English since you are the children of a gentleman. Your names are now Edward and Katherine Grenville. I never want to hear Urdu out of your mouths after tonight.”

Ghulam’s grip tightened around my shoulders while I cried. He muttered a very naughty word in Urdu, barely loud enough for me to hear.

My mother’s cries still rang in my ears even though we were far from the palace. Ahead lay a future I could not imagine— a world without the warmth of her embrace, without the songs that had once lulled me to sleep beneath painted ceilings and fringed canopies. I slumped against my brother as the city flashed by. What I could see of the sky was now devoid of stars— the very lights my mother loved to point out to me.

Darkness fell within the carriage as we raced into the unknown, and my grandfather said no more.

The only thing I knew for certain was this: Nothing would ever be the same again.

My Thoughts

The Light of Stars grabbed my attention in a powerful way from the start. It has a duel location setting: England and India. And in this story, you will meet William Carey, and William Wilberforce, and learn about some of the inner workings of the East India Company, and even touches on the sale of opium.

My heart was impacted by the situations both Katherine (Kitty) and Sebastian found themselves in, the need to prove their worth to their grandfathers, and basically being forced into an arranged marriage. I enjoyed seeing their faith grow, and their relationship with each other.

It's beautifully written, which also covers some tough topics.

If you enjoy sweet Regency romance, with a dose of faith, and a strong female in STEM, I recommend this for your TBR list.

A shrill sound jerked April Yancy’s chin up, and her spine straightened in the beach chair she’d lugged out on the sand. At the same time, another spasm tore through her belly. If only she’d been well enough to ride with Jack. He had begged to go out on a jet ski for weeks. They’d promised him a ride for his third birthday, and he’d clung to that scrap like a seagull with a piece of bread ever since.

Stupid stomach virus. Robert’s parenting skills didn’t allow her the option of resting while he “took care of” Jack.

Where were those two? They should be riding close by now. Her eyes blurred as she stared out at the water. So much nausea.

A wisp of yellow in her peripheral vision caught her attention. The stripe of a life vest. Multiple watercrafts sped around the rock jetties. Which one held Jack? What color had they rented?

A constricting band of dread snarled around her ribs. She hauled herself to her feet, ran toward the rocks, then climbed up to see better.

A colossal crash reverberated across the water. The bone-crunching sound sucked the oxygen from her lungs. She surged forward, scrambling over the riprap. Two of the crafts floated empty of their riders.

Then she saw blond curly hair bobbing in the waves.

Oh, God, no. Not my baby. A scream ripped from her throat. “Jack!”

My Thoughts

Until April is the 8th book in the "Coastal Hearts" series, and the first book I've read by Ferguson. One thing that captured my attention about this story is that it is set in Dauphin Island, since I lived a couple years in Mobile during my childhood.

I was drawn into the story from the first chapter, and wanted to keep reading to find out what the outcome would be. I found it to be a powerful, impactful story of both April and Michael.

April is drowning in loss, grief, and debt, but she does her best to hang on to God in faith. Michael, on the other hand, doesn't want to hear anything at all about God. Will the love and care shown to them by April's church family soften Michael's heart?

If you enjoy contemporary Christian fiction with a touch of romance, you'll want to add this one to your TBR list. It seems to do well as a stand alone, but I look forward to reading the others in the series.

Beware ... of evil workers.... For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Philippians 3: 2, 3.

There are those who need in their hearts the touch of the divine Spirit. Then the message for this time will be their burden. They will not search for human tests, for something new and strange. The Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the test for this time.

The commandment of God that has been almost universally made void, is the testing truth for this time.... The time is coming when all those who worship God will be distinguished by this sign. They will be known as the servants of God, by this mark of their allegiance to Heaven. But all man-made tests will divert the mind from the great and important doctrines that constitute the present truth.

It is the desire and plan of Satan to bring in among us those who will go to great extremes— people of narrow minds, who are critical and sharp, and very tenacious in holding their own conceptions of what the truth means. They will be exacting, and will seek to enforce rigorous duties, and go to great lengths in matters of minor importance, while they neglect the weightier matters of the law— judgment and mercy and the love of God. I’ll Be a Better Mom Tomorrow

I’ll be a better mom tomorrow, I whispered to myself before drifting off to sleep. But when tomorrow never came, mom-guilt plagued my anguished soul. Being a fun-loving, good mom was what I hoped for. But, in reality, I spent lots of days in survival mode; snapping at my kids when they spilt their milk and worrying over how we were going to pay for those extracurricular activities.

My Thoughts

I was delighted for the opportunity to read Moms of the Bible, even if all my kids are grown and I am a grandmother now. (It is actually the second book I have read by Rhonda Stoppe.) I was able to listen to the audiobook, which is narrated by the author.

Rhonda Stoppe discusses various moms of the Bible, who were fearless, flawed, faithful. Such moms as: Jochabed, Hannah, Rebekkah, Rahab, and Herodias. I found encouragement from the examples of these women from the Bible, as well as examples from the author's own life.

If you're a mom, no matter your stage in the journey, I am sure you will find encouragement through this book. Add it to the top of your TBR list.

My Thoughts

Tricia Goyer is one of my most favorite authors. It doesn't matter what the book is, it automatically lands on my TBR list, especially if it's history related.

Twist of Time is the third book in "The Clockwork Chronicles," and the third book she co-authored with her son. The series is best read in order, just so you know.

I like that it was inspired by true history. World War II inspired stories are among my most favorite stories. Sci-Fi/Steampunk isn't really my "thing," but I enjoyed the story anyway.

Not only are we focusing on history, but we're also experiencing the spiritual warfare which goes on "behind the scenes." This adds a whole new dimension to the story.

Writing has always been a way for me to explore the quiet corners of history. This was true for my newest novel Twist of Time. Through this book, I step into a world that is both familiar and utterly mysterious. The book is set in Prague in 1945. I first visited Prague as a wannabe writer in 2001. Then, in 2008, I went back with my family and our church group. I’ve been there numerous times, most recently in 2024 when I was working on this book. I was able to go underground underneath the clock to see where the resistance fighters hid.

Collaborating with my son, Nathan, on the conclusion of The Clockwork Chronicles has been a highlight of my career. We wanted to take the grit of May 1945 Prague and weave it together with the ancient, ticking secrets of the Orloj—the city’s famous astronomical clock.

In this final chapter, the stakes are anchored in the very real, devastating history of the Prague Uprising. On May 8, 1945, the Old Town Hall became a focal point of fierce resistance. As the German forces retreated, they directed heavy fire toward the building, leading to a catastrophic fire that destroyed the municipal archives and heavily damaged the clock. We imagined our characters, Katerina and Josef, caught in this chaos, where the smoke of history meets the supernatural shadows hinted at throughout this series.

While the town hall burned, the Czech resistance fought with everything they had. In our story, this physical battle is a mirror to a much larger, spiritual confrontation. We often think of history as a series of dates, but I believe it is actually a tapestry of souls choosing light over darkness.

Researching the legends of Prague Castle and the hidden depths beneath the city inspired us to ask: What would you do if you realized the war you were fighting was only a shadow of a much larger battle?

We hope this story of Josef, Theodora, Dante, and Katerina reminds you that even when time seems to be running out, hope is never late. I am so grateful to have you join us for this tour. – This excerpt comes from Session 2 which is titled, “Yahweh Ropheka – The LORD Your Healer.”

Earlier in this session, we talked about how God brought the Israelites to an oasis with bitter water, knowing they were parched. If we wanted to draw a present-day spiritual parallel, we might conclude that God is responsible for the bitter places in our lives. That, however, is not the case. As author Jill Briscoe wrote,

“We may have to face God’s truth about our pain—it is real, but we must be careful not to get God and life mixed up. God does not cause the pain and sorrow. He suffers with us and desires to comfort us as only he can.”

God used Marah as an opportunity for the Israelites to experience him as Yahweh Ropheka, their Healer. We can experience him in this way, too, when our journey leads us to a bitter place: divorce, cancer, loss of a loved one, loneliness, chronic pain, broken trust, loss of home and material possessions, and more. Yahweh Ropheka will do his part to heal us and strengthen us, but we must do our part as well.

No matter our situation, let’s move forward by letting go of negativity and grabbing hold of joy. Let’s release the tendency to complain and then reach for gratitude in Yahweh Ropheka’s presence and promises. Let’s release our desire for control and grab hold of trust in his goodness and sovereignty.

My Thoughts

I found this Names of God: Growing Strong study guide to be useful and informative. I like how modern day examples are intermingled with the Biblical examples. I like the pronunciation guide for each name studied.

There are "points to ponder" with space to write your responses to the points discussed. I also like the guided prayer for each session, or chapter, as well as a "how shall we respond?" question. And if all that isn't enough, there is a link to a video for each chapter with additional insights.

This is the third book in the series, and would be perfect for small group study, or individual study, or family worship time. If you're looking for such a resource, I certainly recommend the "Names of God" series.

Had she ever felt about Willis the way Doreen seemed to feel about Mike?

No. No, she had not.

“I’m sorry my dear Mike is gone too,” Doreen said. “He was such a good man.” She shook her head. “But that isn’t why I came over here.”

“I see.” That was a lie, though. She actually didn’t see anything about Doreen’s unplanned visit, her words, or the startling, steady way she looked at her.

After staring at her for a long moment, Doreen pulled out a card. “I came over to give you this, dear.” She held it out, and her gaze warmed. “Here.”

Confused, Leanna accepted the card. Noticed that it was made of fine card stock, with three words written in bold, black script. Amish Widows Club

She ran a finger over the three words.

“What is this?”

“It’s an invitation, dear.”

“To . . . to what?”

Reaching out, Doreen enfolded Leanna’s hands in her own. “I came over to let you know that there are quite a few widows in the area who don’t necessarily want to marry again. They’re tired of being set up with friends of friends and tired of being courted by desperate men in need of home- cooked meals . . . or worse.”

“Worse?”

Instead of explaining, Doreen’s voice gentled. “I have found them to be a wonderful support group. Some are like me, who had a wonderful marriage with the love of their life and don’t want to marry again. Other women weren’t so blessed. Still others have their own private reasons for wanting to remain single. However, we all have something in common.”

“What is that?”

“We yearn for friendships with like-minded ladies. We meet together about once a month in private, at each other’s houses. People think we’re having sewing bees or making food for charity auctions or a host of other things. While we certainly do many good things for other people, we mainly just sit and chat and laugh and support each other.”

“I see.”

Doreen chuckled. “I don’t think you do, dear. But that’s okay. All that matters is that I think you would fit into our group just fine.”

After squeezing Leanna’s hands one more time, Doreen stood up. Carefully arranged the tails of her kapp.Picked up a purse that Leanna hadn’t noticed she’d been carrying. “I think I’ve taken up enough of your time, dear. You take care now.”

That was it? Doreen was just going to . . . leave?

Feeling rather irritated, Leanna picked up the card and hurried to Doreen’s side. “Wait.”

The woman turned on her heel. “Yes?”

“Thank you for the offer, but I don’t believe that—”

“I understand. When you have time, read the directions on the other side of the card. It will tell you what to do, whether you decide to take me up on my invitation or choose to pretend this visit never happened.”

Choose to pretend? “You don’t understand.”

“I’m afraid I do, dear. I’ve been where you are myself.” Doreen turned before opening the front door. “Leanna, whatever you decide to do next is your decision. Pray on it and then move on. No matter what, it is your choice.”

“My choice,” she echoed.

“Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, dear. And no matter what, please know that I hope you find peace. I promise that things will get better. They always do, ain’t so?”

And with that, Doreen turned back around, adjusting her black cape over her navy- colored dress before striding forward.

Mesmerized, Leanna stood by the door and watched her leave, the hem of Doreen’s dress swishing around her ankles as the tails of her white kapp fluttered in the wind.

She never looked back once.

When the woman was out of sight, Leanna quickly closed the door. She walked to stand in front of the fireplace and gave thanks that the fire inside was still burning brightly on this chilly day.

And felt curiously empty.

Ill at ease, she returned to the kitchen, gazed at the stacks of cups and plates in the sink. All that remained of the past two visits. One so very disagreeable. The other so very disconcerting.

Feeling as if she was in a daze, Leanna sat back down in her chair. Took off her shoes. Took a bite of another cookie. She wondered yet again if a peanut butter cookie ever could be special, then decided she didn’t care and put it back down.

She stared at the card on the center of the table. Its crisp, white form lay like a beacon against the dark wood’s surface.

My Thoughts

The Unexpected Caller is the first book of "The Amish Widows Club" series, and is such a fun, engaging read.

Having experienced unhappy marriage myself, and finding myself single again, I could relate to Leanna and her reluctance to marry again. It's hard to trust again. I loved to see how involved Evan's sons were in urging and encouraging him to pursue Leanna. I also appreciate how Leanna could find friendship and fellowship with other women.

If you enjoy sweet Amish fiction, with a touch of romance, you will definitely want to add this one to your TBR. I'm already looking forward to book two of the series!

My Thoughts

The Girl from Tomorrow's Town is the fifth book in the "Enduring Hope" series, and my first read by Naomi Dawn Musch. I look forward to reading more of her works.

I'll admit, I didn't grow up going to circuses, nor did my children. I think I may have taken them twice, and I'm not even sure they remember even going. For that reason, this story was a rather fun for me to read, and helped me learn a little about circus life about 100 years or so ago.

Watching the relationship between Lily and Francis grow, and observing their trust and faith strengthen, was really sweet to see. It is a descriptive story about circus life, and leaves you a little breathless at the tragic train wreck. This story is based on a real-life circus train wreck, involving the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus.

If you enjoy historical fiction, based on a real life event, with a touch of faith and a dose of romance, I recommend this one for your TBR list.

Did you ever dream of running away with the circus? I must admit, it was never something I imagined doing, but like most kids of my generation, my wonderment did soar the first time I stepped foot beneath a “big top”. Some of those sensory memories stayed with me through the decades since, and of course, made their way into my novel. Nowadays, the trains or wagons no longer roll into town. There are very few circuses still around.

I grew up in the region not far from Barnum and Bailey’s Circus World in Wisconsin, but when traveling circuses were at their peak (much earlier than my day, I will add), there were nearly 100 of them traversing the country, nearly a third of them by rail. One of the largest was the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus based in southern Indiana. (Originally northern Indiana, but they transitioned to a warmer location where they wintered their animals.) They traveled in two trains—one that hauled the animals, laborers, and roustabouts, and the other that hauled the performers with their families and other work staff.

The circus was a city within itself, and more importantly, it became like family to most of the performers. Into this world is where my cast of characters gathers in The Girl from Tomorrow’s Town. Lily Mae Dodge is in search of just such a place to call home and people she can think of as family while she searches for her mother, lost to her when she was sent west on an orphan train as a child.

I never imagined myself writing a circus story, but when I learned about the real-life history of the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus, and tragically, the terrible circus train crash that stands as the most devastating in history, I needed to get to know some of the performers and people who worked there. I also wanted to add my own characters in a way that would bring this historic circus family to life. To tell the story of the crash, it was important to me that I do it in a way that would honor the lives and memories of those who were involved.

“Tomorrow’s Town” is a circus phrase referring to the place of the next show. The traveling circus season was a busy one, and sometimes performers who were already looking ahead to the next show simply referred to the next location as “tomorrow’s town.” While The Girl from Tomorrow’s Town is set in 1918 during WWI when the tragedy took place, it is primarily a story of hope, dreams, love, healing, and found family.
