Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17: 17.

Those who are sanctified through the truth are living recommendations of its power, and representatives of their risen Lord. The religion of Christ will refine the taste, sanctify the judgment, elevate, purify, and ennoble the soul, making the Christian more and more fit for the society of the heavenly angels.

“And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.” John 17: 19. “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” 1 Peter 1: 22. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7: 1....

Here is Bible sanctification. It is not merely a show or outside work. It is sanctification received through the channel of truth. It is truth received in the heart, and practically carried out in the life.

There is no Bible sanctification for those who cast a part of the truth behind them. There is light enough given in the word of God, so that none need err.... Jesus, considered as a man, was perfect, yet He grew in grace. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Luke 2: 52. Even the most perfect Christian may increase continually in the knowledge and love of God....

Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, or a day. It is a continual growth in grace.... Satan lives, and is active, and every day we need to cry earnestly to God for help and strength to resist him. As long as Satan reigns we shall have self to subdue, besetments to overcome, and there is no stopping place, there is no point to which we can come and say we have fully attained....

Obenhaus, Mindy

The letter "O" isn't always easy for which to come up with something. But I actually do have an author I can share with you!

Mindy Obenhaus is a Christian author, who has written several "Love Inspired" novels. It looks like many of her stories are set in Texas, with one series set in the Rockies.

My introduction to her work was about a year ago, when I read and reviewed An Unexpected Companion, an uplifting inspirational romance – a Western Christian fiction story of a K-9 Service Dog and a heartwarming second chance. It is set on a ranch in Texas; who could ask for a better setting?

About the Author

Loni Kemper Moore is a sports-cheering, Diet-Pepsi-sipping, Rocky Mountain–adventure-seeking storyteller who longs to reflect God’s beautiful love through life’s hardest places, especially for remarkable women around the globe.

A preacher’s kid at heart though her father joined her mother in Heaven, Loni’s wanderlust was sparked early by family and missionary stories. She has visited more than a dozen countries, learning from other cultures while often experiencing life as “the other.” Though she attended multiple schools as a minority and later discovered African heritage through DNA testing, she approaches those experiences with humility rather than assumption.

Loni earned bachelor’s degrees in Education and Biblical Studies from the former Denver Baptist Bible College and completed graduate work in Education at the University of Evansville.

A Jesus-following history enthusiast, Loni was named Leonnie Sue after generations of strong women. My Thoughts

The Last Quiet Autumn is the third book in the "Silver Receiver" series, and the first book I've read by Moore. It may be read as a stand alone, perhaps.

I like that it's set in the panhandle of Texas (because I lived briefly in Amarillo once upon a time). I also like that it is set during the dawning of World War II.

This novel is written from three viewpoints, with one of those being in first person and the other two in third person. It made it a little challenging for me to follow sometimes.

If you enjoy historic, faith-based fiction with a touch of romance, you'll want to check this one out.

I can still picture my grandmother standing at her farmhouse stove, cracking open precious eggs she’d just sold back to herself. The surplus eggs were sold to allow her to buy rationed products.

One recipe she made regularly was this ‘Wacky Cake’—a chocolate cake so frugal it needed no eggs, butter, or milk. While historians debate the exact origin of the name, the most likely explanation is that it earned its playful moniker from the unconventional method of mixing everything directly in the baking pan—no bowl required. Homemakers could hardly believe a cake without eggs or butter would actually rise and taste good. But it does!

As a child spoiled by Betty Crocker mixes, I had to admire her ingenuity, even if I couldn’t quite share her enthusiasm for the taste. When my character Chessa bakes in ‘The Last Quiet Autumn,’ I drew directly from recipes like this one. Understanding how women stretched ingredients during wartime rationing helped me write scenes that felt authentic.

It reminded me how faith, like that cake, often rises when we least expect it to.

Wacky Chocolate Cake

(a.k.a. Depression Cake or Crazy Cake)

Circa 1940s

Ingredients:

1½ cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon vinegar (white or apple cider)
⅓ cup + 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup cold water

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F
In an ungreased 8×8-inch square baking pan, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
Make three wells in the dry mixture:

o In one well, pour the vanilla.

o In the second, the vinegar.

o In the third, the oil.

Pour the cold water over everything and mix well with a fork or whisk until smooth.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cool in the pan. Dust with powdered sugar or enjoy plain.

Mentink, Dana and Miller, Carolyn

Today I'll share about two of my favorite authors whose last names begin with "M."

First up is Carolyn Miller, an inspirational romance author who lives in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, with her husband and four children. My introduction to Miller's works was The Elusive Miss Ellison, which I reviewed on my old blog, which is part of her "Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace" series. Another book of hers I read, reviewed and enjoyed was Dusk's Darkest Shores from her "Regency Wallflowers" series.

Most recently, I reviewed Not Exactly Mr. Darcy., book 1 in "The Silver Teapot" series.

Among my most favorite Christian authors is Dana Mentink, who writes Christian romantic suspense. My introduction to Mentink's works was her "Love Unleashed" series. I fell in love with each dog she included in the series. I'm a real sucker for dog stories!

I have since read several of her Christian suspense novels, such as most of her "Security Hounds Investigations" series, the "Elements of Danger" series, and Trapped in Yosemite.

Her book that I most recently reviewed was Raging Waters, a definite on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense.

Linder, Hannah

Today I'd like to share about Hannah Linder, a Christian author who writes Regency romantic suspense novels filled with passion, secrets, and danger. She is a four-time Selah Award winner, a 2024 Carol Award finalist, and a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW). You can read a few of her short stories for free on her blog.

I've only read one of her books, The Red Cottage, and reviewed it earlier on my blog. I think the cover art is lovely, and I enjoyed the story.

Kindle, and Author Killelea, Jackie

Admittedly, the Kindle is my favorite e-reader, one which I read all of my e-books. To be honest, I prefer reading e-books, because I can adjust the font size to one that's easier on my eyes. I also like being able to adjust the light, so I can have it darker if I'm reading in bed (in the middle of the night!), or have it brighter during daylight.

I also like to have the Kindle app on my tablet, on my phone, and even on my desktop, that way I can pick up in my book, where ever I am.

Yes, I realize there are other e-readers and apps, but Kindle is what I have and use. Two others that I know of are Nook, and Kobo. The iPad can also be used as an e-reader.

But Kindle is connected to Amazon, which also connects Audible and Goodreads, now. So, whenever I finish reading a book on my Kindle, it automatically is placed on my finished list on Goodreads.

If you're looking for an author whose last name begins with "K" I suggest Jackie Killelea. I reviewed His Grace's Governess last year, which is first in the "Saving the Spinsters" series.

My most recent review was for Ashton, by Anne Perreault, a new-to-me author, which is set in Montana, a state near and dear to my heart, because all four of my children were born there.

Another recent review, which was not a blog post, was Targeted in the Swamp, by Kerry Johnson. This one is set in Pennsylvania.

Most of the books are ebooks, but every once in a while I get a hard copy. Sometimes I request large print, if it's available.

Pure in Heart and Life {a devotional}

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Matthew 5: 8.

Into the city of God there will enter nothing that defiles. All who are to be dwellers there will here have become pure in heart. In one who is learning of Jesus, there will be manifest a growing distaste for careless manners, unseemly language, and coarse thought. When Christ abides in the heart, there will be purity and refinement of thought and manner.

But the words of Jesus ... have a deeper meaning— not merely pure in the sense in which the world understands purity, free from that which is sensual, pure from lust, but true in the hidden purposes and motives of the soul, free from pride and self-seeking, humble, unselfish, childlike.

Only like can appreciate like. Unless you accept in your own life the principle of self-sacrificing love, which is the principle of His character, you cannot know God....

When Christ shall come in His glory, the wicked cannot endure to behold Him. The light of His presence, which is life to those who love Him, is death to the ungodly.... When He shall appear, they will pray to be hidden from the face of Him who died to redeem them.

But to hearts that have become purified through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, all is changed. These can know God. Moses was hid in the cleft of the rock when the glory of the Lord was revealed to him; and it is when we are hid in Christ that we behold the love of God....

By faith we behold Him here and now. In our daily experience we discern His goodness and compassion in the manifestation of His providence. We recognize Him in the character of His Son.... The pure in heart see God in a new and endearing relation, as their Redeemer; and while they discern the purity and loveliness of His character, they long to reflect His image. They see Him as a Father longing to embrace a repenting son, and their hearts are filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory....

Irvin, Kelly

Today I'd like to share with you another Christian author, Kelly Irvin. She writes Amish fiction, romantic suspense, and women's fiction.

A few months ago I read and reviewed A Daughter's Choice, which is book 10 in The Heart of the Amish series, a series written by various authors. A Daughter's Choice is about Henrietta, a young Amish woman, who loves her herd of goats. I love goats, so I really enjoyed this story.

If you enjoy Amish fiction, and are an animal lover, I recommend this story.

Too many memories of their shared past crowded into her thoughts. If she really wanted to move on, she needed to take that step now. He was her past. He’d been good to her until the end. Now, she wanted to move into her future. “Look. You don't need to be here any longer. As you can see, nobody has broken in. I need to see my brother, who is still in jail, and figure out what to do next.”

He shuffled his feet.

“And if you still doubt that I can take care of myself, meet Babe Ruth.”

She pulled out her trusty baseball bat from beside her bed. Ashton grinned. Then he took a step backward when she took a swing at him. The tip of the bat missed him by a few inches.

“You might want to choke up a bit on that bat. That was always your weakness.”

There he went, teasing her with so much familiarity. She couldn't continue like this.

As those inner rantings continued, she grew aware that the still sweet voice that usually advised her way in the deep recess of her heart was absent. Maybe not silent, but she was unable to hear and acknowledge it.

Sitting cross-legged on the couch, she closed her eyes and focused not on the anger and frustration, but on hearing that voice of wisdom.

Lord, let me hear Your voice instead of my own. Lead me, instead of me leading my heart.

That was when she heard it, so faint it was part of her heartbeat.

Compassion, not condemnation.

Mercy, not hate.

He was right with the last one. She felt entitled to be angry. After all, Ryley had kept them all in the dark for the last ten years. My Thoughts

Since I lived in Montana for over 20 years, I always like to read any story I can that's set in Montana. Throw in horses, and I'm definitely hooked!

Ashton is the first book I have read by Anne Perreault, and what an introduction! It's also the first of a new series, "Yellowstone Descendants." While I haven't read any of the original series, I didn't feel lost in Ashton. But I certainly would like to go read that series now.

Ashton is the returning "prodigal son" after having been injured in an accident. His former girlfriend, Kelsey, works as a therapist at a therapeutic riding center. She's out to prove her grandmother wrong, who always told her she would never amount to anything.

This story is full of emotion, compassion, forgiveness and growth.

If you enjoy contemporary Christian romance, set in the beautiful state of Montana, and horses, be sure to add this to your TBR list!

About the Author

Anne Perreault was born and raised in Germany. By the time she was 14 years old, her family moved to Dubai, UAE. While living in this exotic place, she traveled extensively to various countries around the world. After graduating from an American boarding school in Austria, she attended college in England, where she met her husband. She graduated from New England College with a degree in biology, and settled down in Connecticut.

Anne became a horseback riding instructor as well as a certified therapeutic riding instructor. She and a group of friends started a therapeutic riding center in Bristol, CT. During that time, Anne also received a masters degree in secondary education and began to homeschool her three children. While raising their three children, she began to write an inspirational story primarily for her daughter. 12 years later, God commissioned her to write down her skating stories. That started a writing ministry she has enjoyed ever since.

Anne, her husband, and two of their grown children now reside in Southern Vermont, where they are building their home. Besides writing, Anne enjoys reading, spending time with her husband, grown children, and granddogger. Hart, Sandra Merville

Today, I'd like to share with you another wonderful Christian author: Sandra Merville Hart. She writes Christian historical fiction, most of which revolves around the US Civil War. I have actually read all of her "Spies of the Civil War" series, which I really enjoyed. I even reviewed a few of them, including book 6, Tides of Healing.

She also contributed one of the books in the "Romance of the Gilded Age" series, which is an excellent series, by the way! Her book is A Spring at the Greenbrier, which is set in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, is a nostalgic story set in 1914.

Goodreads and Three "G" Authors

One the most useful book trackers I like to use is Goodreads. I also think it is one of the most well known ones. I like the ability to keep track of books I am currently reading, have read, want to read, and now, we can even keep a list of DNF books. I can create shelves for books that I have or will review for CelebrateLit or JustReads; I have shelves for the Five in a Row books I used when homeschooling my kids; books I want to read soon; lists for book clubs you might be in, and so forth.

You can keep track of the start and finish dates for reading that book. Goodreads also helps keep track of book challenges. I like that you can set a goal of how many books you plan to read in a year, and it will track your progress for that goal.

You can also keep track of progress in individual books, up to 10 books. I find that useful for the books I am reading for reviews. I'm not a fast reader, unfortunately, and sometimes I have to move on to the next book for upcoming review before I am finished with the book for the most recent due date.

Now for three authors whose last name begins with "G." Two are among my most favorite authors, the third is fairly new to me.

First: Shelley Shepard Gray. I think she is among the most famous Christian authors, and seems most well known for her Amish fiction. I've read most of her Amish Brides of Pinecraft series, the Amish of Hart County series, and The Charmed Amish Life series. I especially like the Amish Brides of Pinecraft stories, so much so that one time when my daughter and I were in the area, we looked for the Pinecraft community. That was fun.

Second author: Tricia Goyer. She is well known among the Christian homeschooling community, since she is a homeschool mother herself...a mother of nine! The first book of hers that I read was Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington, and I've read many since. I especially enjoy her well-researched World War II novels. She has also written several nonfiction books; one that really impacted me was Walk It Out. Most recently she has written a series with her son, Nathan, The Clockwork Chronicles, which I have reviewed and will be reviewing.

Third author, fairly new to me: Danielle Grandinetti. My introduction to Grandinetti was His Boss's Little Sister, which I reviewed last November. Most recently I reviewed Eyewitness Sketch. Both are set in Wisconsin, which is a state that is near and dear to my heart, since my parents grew up there.

Christian author, Felicia Ferguson, is a writer of fictional characters overcoming trauma, abuse, or past tragedy with a biblical worldview to help readers build faith for the journey.

I was introduced to Ferguson with The Ties That Loose, which is a gripping (fictional) story about the wife of an Air Force pilot who was shot down over Bosnia. Her father had been killed in action in Vietnam.

Eljarbo, Heidi and Ennis, Heidi

I was fairly recently introduced to both of these authors.

Heidi Eljarbo is a historical fiction author. She has lived in Canada, six US states, Japan, Switzerland, and Austria, and now calls Norway home. Her stories include history, mystery, and some even a bit of art history.

My introduction to her works was Whispers in the Snow, set in Norway. which I reviewed earlier this year. I truly do look forward to reading more of her books. Don't you love the cover?!

Heidi Ennis is an author who lives in the Pacific Northwest of the US. Her historical fiction is set in the Pacific Northwest, along the Columbia River.

A Father's Dream was my introduction to Ennis's works. It's book 1 in the "Columbia River Saga." I reviewed it earlier this year, as well. I think this cover is gorgeous, as well.

Dickerson, Melanie and Dobson, Melanie

Today I'd like to share with you a couple of my favorite authors. (Hey, I have a long list!)

Melanie Dickerson is a Christian author who writes happily-ever-after romance. Her work work has been awarded two Christy Awards, a Carol Award, a Maggie Award, a Golden Quill Award, a National Readers Choice Award, and a Book Buyers’ Best Award.

My introduction to Dickerson's work was The Golden Braid, which is a retelling of the fairytale, Rapunzel.

Recently I participated in an online scavenger hunt, which was held by multiple Christian authors. Many of those authors also had giveaways on their own website. Much to my surprise, I won the giveaway on Dickerson's website! I received all three books in her "Regency Spies of London" trilogy.

Melanie Dobson is the award-winning author of almost thirty time-slip, historical romance, suspense, and contemporary novels. My introduction to her works was Shadows of Ladenbrook Manor. I've also read Chateau of Secrets and Memories of Glass.

Chancing the Frontiersman's Heart is the first book of the "Wilderness Romance" series. After reading it, I am eagerly looking forward to the rest of the series!

If you've been reading my blog very long, you will know that history is one of my most favorite topics, and that extends into my enjoyment of historical fiction (my favorite genre). Byrd writes historical fiction well!

Chancing the Frontiersman's Heart kept me engaged, from start to finish; I didn't want to put it down! Jacob, Dawn and little Mary were all very engaging, and the relationships among them were precious to watch grow.

I like that this story contains real events, and real people from history (think Daniel Boone!). If you enjoy learning the history of the settlement of Kentucky, I highly recommend this for your TBR list.

As a reader of historical fiction, I love reaching the end of a novel and reading the author’s note to learn how real people and events inspired the written words. Now, as an author myself, I try to provide the same for my own readers and Chancing the Frontiersman’s Heart is no exception.

While the Siege of Yorktown is considered the last major battle of the revolutionary war, ten months afterward, American forces would suffer great losses at the Battle of Blue Licks. During this conflict, more than sixty Kentuckians would lose their lives.

However, what intrigued me most about this piece of American history was actually the events leading up to it. The Battle of Blue Licks was a result of a skirmish a few days prior: the Siege of Bryan’s Station. In what is now Lexington, Kentucky, a fortified settlement was attacked by Delaware and Shawnee warriors, as well as Canadian Rangers.

Playing a vital part in the station’s ability to withstand the attack, of course, were the women of Bryan’s Station. During this conflict, the women would do more than simply provide support though. They would put themselves directly in harm’s way, venturing outside the safety of the settlement walls, in order to fetch water from the spring. Though Bryan’s Station was surrounded and they could be descended upon the moment they left the fold, the women (and girls) marched forwarded with heads held high to do what had to be done.

As soon as I learned of the women of Bryan’s Station and their act of bravery, I knew I had to weave these historical events into this novel. I hope you find their story as inspiring as I did!

All for Me

“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me;…

yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Earnestly, He prayed in anguish, agonizing with God;

great drops of sweat fell from His brow, like blood.

Alone He petitioned His Father, while His followers slept,

yet He prayed not for His will to be done, but His Father’s.

The soldiers came, led by one of His disciples,

who betrayed his Lord with a kiss.

He did not resist, but meekly went with the mob,

to the mockery of His trial.

They took Him to Pilate, but he found no fault;

he sent Him to Herod, who sent Him back.

He was flogged, given a cruel crown of thorns,

and a purple robe--the King of the Jews was He.

Pilate washed his hands, signifying he was innocent;

the people cried, “His blood be upon us, and our children.”

Upon His shoulders they placed the heavy cross,

but He couldn’t stand beneath the load, and fell.

Finally they reached Golgotha--The Skull,

and drove spikes into His hands and feet:

the hands which had touched and healed, and blessed;

the feet which had walked many miles, doing good.

Into the air they raised Him upon the cross;

now He was suspended between earth and heaven,

between His Father and the people for whom He died.

Still, He prayed, “Father, forgive them.”

His heart still reached out to others, not Himself;

He remembered His mother; He promised the criminal life.

He died for all mankind, for a world of sinners.

Clouds rolled in, thunder rumbled throughout the air,

lightning streaked the sky; nature showed her protest.

God withdrew His loving arms--He had to do it.

The whole universe watched in horrified amazement,

the angels had to veil their faces, they couldn’t bear it.

Alone and separated from His Father He hung,

with the weight of the world’s sins upon Him.

They crushed the life out of Him, and the dreadful

pain of being separated from God killed Him.

The waiting throng mocked Him, and cried,

“If You are the Son of God, why don’t You save Yourself?”

He could have called a multitude of angels,

one would have been sufficient, to free Him;

but He chose to die, instead, in man’s place.

At last He could bear it no longer;

He cried, “It is finished!”, then bowed His head and died.

The universe stood back in amazement.

God had really allowed Satan to kill His Son!

He was taken from the cross and laid to rest

in a new garden tomb over Sabbath.

But Sunday, death’s chains were broken;

Christ rose the victorious King; the sacrifice was sufficient.

All heaven rang out in triumph and praise,

redemption had taken place; salvation was complete.

Oh, amazing fact that while He was in the tomb,

His wounds started to heal--for Christ’s blood can never die.

But He bares the scars of love for eternity.

They are constant reminders of the price He’s paid.

If only one man had sinned, still He would have died.

Infinite love; amazing thought!

My sins were born by my Creator, my Brother;

He became my sins: impatience, anger, selfishness…

He took them on that I might live.

Unwavering Faith {a devotional}

Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. James 1: 6.

Prayer and faith are closely allied, and they need to be studied together. In the prayer of faith there is a divine science; it is a science that everyone who would make his life-work a success must understand. Christ says, “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” Mark 11: 24. He makes it plain that our asking must be according to God’s will; we must ask for the things that He has promised, and whatever we receive must be used in doing His will. The conditions met, the promise is unequivocal.

For the pardon of sin, for the Holy Spirit, for a Christlike temper, for wisdom and strength to do His work, for any gift He has promised, we may ask; then we are to believe that we receive, and return thanks to God that we have received. We need look for no outward evidence of the blessing. The gift is in the promise, and we may go about our work assured that what God has promised He is able to perform, and that the gift, which we already possess, will be realized when we need it most.

To live thus by the word of God means the surrender to Him of the whole life. There will be felt a continual sense of need and dependence, a drawing out of the heart after God. Prayer is a necessity; for it is the life of the soul. Family prayer, public prayer, have their place; but it is secret communion with God that sustains the soul life....

An intensity such as never before was seen is taking possession of the world. In amusement, in money-making, in the contest for power, in the very struggle for existence, there is a terrible force that engrosses body and mind and soul. In the midst of this maddening rush, God is speaking. He bids us come apart and commune with Him. “Be still, and know that I am God.” ...

Celebrate Lit Publicity Group, and Cary, Jennifer Lynn

As I mentioned a couple days ago, I read and review ARCs for Christian authors. One of my sources for books to review is through the Celebrate Lit Publicity Group. I've been reviewing with them for a few years now, and I am grateful for this resource. They've helped me connect to authors I probably would never have met. I've certainly been introduced to books I never would have found.

For example, it was through Celebrate Lit that I was introduced to Jennifer Lynn Cary. My introduction was her book, Run Around Sue, which I reviewed in July, 2023. It's book 3 in "The Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue" series.

I've also reviewed Bernadette, which is book 8 of the series.

Near the end of this month, I will also be reviewing Pieces of April. One thing that attracts me to this series is the bright red cardinal on the cover of each book. The books are set in Kokomo, Indiana, in the 1970s.

Cary is a Hoosier girl...and so am I! This series is set in Indiana, which makes them dear to my heart. And with the time setting of the '70s...well, those were my childhood years!

Bookfunnel, and Beller, Misty M. and Byrd, Andrea

Yesterday I mentioned I read a lot of ARCs. One source of those ARCs is Bookfunnel. It seems a large number of Indie authors us this platform. Looking over the website, I can see how useful it would be to indie authors (and I'll keep it in mind when/if I ever finish any of the books I am writing!).

As a reader, though, I like the platform. My Bookfunnel library is stuffed full. I doubt I would ever be able to read all the books in my library! It's easy to set up your own library. Then I suggest you start subscribing to your favorite authors' email newsletters! Many of them offer a free ebook, just for subscribing.

For example, one of my top favorite authors, Misty M. Beller, offers a free copy of one of her books, both as an ebook and an audiobook, just for signing up for her newsletter.

This past December I reviewed one of her books, Mail-Order Duchess. Last month I reviewed another one of her books, Mail-Order Baroness. In July I will be reviewing the third one in the series, Mail-Order Viscountess. I especially like this series, since it is set in Montana. I dearly love Montana, after all, since all four of my children were born in Montana!

Another of my favorite authors is Andrea Byrd. Her books are set during the settlement of Kentucky. Look for my review of her latest book, Chancing the Frontiersman's Heart, this coming Sunday. I have also read all and reviewed most of her "Frontier Hearts" series.

Advanced Reader/Review Copies

If you've been reading my blog regularly the past year or two, you will notice that I've been reading and reviewing books consistently. Mostly they are Advanced Reader or Review Copies, for Christian authors, through a couple different publicity groups. I'll share more about them, when we reach those letters in the alphabet. I also review for some indie authors, or through authors' launch teams. I manage to keep my calendar pretty full with review deadlines! LOL I only wish I could read faster!

I'll admit, I do enjoy listening to audiobooks. Some I get through the Libby app for my library, and some I get through Audible. Audiobooks are convenient, because you can listen to them while you're doing chores around the house (like, washing dishes!), or while out running errands. I usually listen to an audiobook while I'm falling asleep at night, or if I wake in the middle of the night. Sometimes it doesn't always work well, though, if the book is too engrossing or exciting. LOL

I have a theory. There is often one simple decision that can become the turning point in your life. One moment that changes the whole trajectory of your journey in this world. I’ve had a lot of time in the last few months to contemplate this idea. But even though the theory makes sense, I’m still trying to identify that ultimate, path-changing event in my own history. What single incident sent me careening down this path to such an extraordinary life?

Not that long ago, I was just a normal kid living in a small Kansas town without a care in the world. How did I go from that to becoming an “international icon,” as one recent press release claimed? I may be over-analyzing, but it’s a little hard not to, with the past few months literally replaying over and over in my mind.

Watching your life flash before your eyes. Whoever coined the expression certainly did not mean what I’m witnessing now. This is not a “death’s-doorstep” moment, but it’s definitely strange. Surreal.

Excerpt 2 Sophie

“Well, look who it is, the superstar himself,” the guy in the lead says with a sneer.

“The Man, the Myth, the Legend,” the other one agrees.

I’m not sure which is more confusing: the way these strangers hover over us or the snark that penetrates their words. I’ve never seen them before. I glance at Jake. His face is pale and rock- hard, like a marble statue.

“What are you doing here?” Jake’s voice has an odd, gravely tone to it.

The bulky guy lifts his chin. “Heard there was some excitement going on in your life, and we didn’t want to miss it.”

Jake’s jaw twitches as he holds the guy’s steady gaze, shared animosity sizzling between them.

Having had enough, I reach out my hand, which they completely ignore. “Hi, I’m Sophie.”

The taller, thin one glances at me like he just noticed there are other people at the table. “I’m Jon.” He nudges his friend. “And this is Rick.”

Oh…understanding washes over me. These are Jake’s childhood friends who promptly dumped him when he became famous. No wonder he’s less than thrilled to see them.

I withdraw my neglected hand and reach under the table to rest it on Jake’s knee to give an encouraging squeeze. He turns to me. The sad little grin he offers breaks my heart. My incredible boyfriend, who seems to have it all, has never recovered from the betrayal of his childhood friends.

Excerpt 3 Jake

As I stare down at the halfpipe, I keep reminding myself that I’m at Copper Mountain, but the glaring lights, the Olympic banner, the crowd of spectators, even what I’m wearing, have all transported me back in time to the final Olympic event when I was awarded the Silver Medal.

The two weeks of the Olympic Games, as well as the months that followed, have always been such a jumble in my mind. But standing here now, it all comes flooding back to me: the awe of competing against the guys I’d grown up admiring, the nervous energy that emanated all around me, the ease with which I boarded my first couple runs, the shock of realizing I was actually in medal contention, and then the complete disbelief when the final scores were posted. The memories are overwhelming.

I squat down and take a few breaths, unsure why they are affecting me so much. Maybe because I never really had the chance to process everything. I was too young and unprepared for the moment and all that followed. Heck, I still don’t understand it all.

I peer up at the night sky. The full moon shines as bright as one of the spotlights. God, I don’t know why all this has happened to me. I believe all things can work for Your glory. Please help me to see how this crazy life can bring others to You.

My Thoughts

The Ultimate Blindside is the third book in the Blindside series, but seems to work fairly well as a stand alone. In this one, we follow more adventures of Jake and Sophie, the teen main characters.

I was hooked from the beginning, and remained so throughout the whole story, as Jake and Sophie set out to help a mother and her daughter. It is full of mystery, danger, and intrigue...and even some sweet teen romance.

If you are looking for faith based suspense, mystery, and sweet romance for your teen, I recommend all of the Blindside series. I will also say that even young adults, and those of us not so young anymore, will enjoy the series, too.

My Thoughts

The Bible Companion, Book 7, focuses on the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs (Song of Solomon). These are books full of wisdom, and are poetic books.

It is written in a one-chapter-a-day format, in which you will read a chapter from the Bible, then read the commentary found in this book. There is a companion thought, and questions, at the end of each commentary. There is a small amount of space to write responses, but it might be better to use a separate notebook to write in.

I was a little disappointed to see that there weren't lined pages on which to write. I guess I was picturing more of a workbook-type set up. But it is still very useful.

If you are looking for some Bible study helps, this series would be a wonderful addition to your "tool box."

The Promise Box

My mother had an intricately carved wooden box approximately 4” x 3” that was passed down to her by her mother. It was called a Promise Box and held 150 small cards in assorted colors. One side had a Scripture verse, the other a prayer. Most of the verses came from Proverbs.

The Promise Box was always kept in place we passed many times a day. A place where we’d be sure to see it and be enticed to pull a card. I’d lift the lid and breathe in the musty smell of years gone by then choose a card, eager to see what message from God awaited me. The limp cards with their faded colors told me I wasn’t the first.

My mother’s Promise Box had belonged to her mother. When my mother-in-law died, I received the Promise Box that had belonged to her grandmother. By then the metal box engraved with an intricate family scene had seen better days. The hinges had broken apart. The once shiny box had darkened to near black. But I couldn’t part with it. It had to be more than 150 years old. I couldn’t help but wonder how many times those who owned it reached for a word from the Lord to get them through their day.

Most had lost children. They depended on God for daily bread literally as the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl took their family members and livelihoods. As an adult, I understood that we aren’t to treat the promises of God like fortune cookies we hope will bring us good luck. A daily visit to the Promise Box doesn’t substitute for time spent with God in prayer and His Word but it has value. The Promise Box reminds us that God is not only in the church, He is in our homes. He wants us to see Him, to reach for Him, and rely on His promises. If a little box nudges us to look to Him with expectation., then it is not only a gift we should treasure, but a treasure we should pass on.
