Can we be honest about something for a minute?

Mother’s Day is complicated. It’s flowers and sticky-fingered cards that say, “I love you, Mommy,” in handwriting that looks like a seismograph reading. It’s also empty arms and quiet grief and feelings that absolutely do not fit inside a pastel Hallmark envelope, no matter how hard you try to stuff them in there.

It’s the wild, laughing joy of babies finally home—and the soft, steady ache of ones who never made it.

Some of us are walking into this weekend absolutely beaming. Some of us are white-knuckling it. And a whole lot of us are doing both at the same time, which is exhausting and very on-brand for motherhood in general.

So here are three things I want us to hold onto this weekend—whether we’re celebrating or grieving or waiting or somewhere in that tender, unnamed in-between place where most of us actually live:

1. Motherhood takes a thousand different forms, and most of them don’t come with a birth certificate.

Can we just say this out loud?

Not every mother has a delivery room story. Some of the fiercest, most ferocious mamas I know have never given birth—not once. They showed up through foster care, adoption, mentorship, spiritual mama-bearing, or just the sheer stubborn force of love that refused to quit.

Some carried a baby for a season and made the most heartbreakingly brave decision a person can make—choosing adoption, choosing a child’s future over their own comfort. Some are still in the waiting room, paperwork stacked on the kitchen table, prayers worn smooth from repetition, hope gripped with shaking hands. Some are mothering in a million unseen ways—pouring into other people’s kids, holding broken stories, showing up without applause or a brunch reservation.

I know these mothers firsthand. The women in my life—my bio mom, foster mom, adoptive mom, and mentors—refused to let me drift. Motherhood is not limited to DNA or a delivery room or whoever gets the carnation this Sunday morning.

If your life is marked by sacrificial love for children—if you are showing up, pouring out, letting go, holding on, standing in the gap when nobody asked you to—you are mothering. Full stop.

2. Love doesn’t always look like celebration.

For so many people, Mother’s Day just magnifies the ache. The one that’s been there all year—politely staying in the background—suddenly decides to take up the whole room.

It’s the mom who buried a child. The woman who longs for a baby she hasn’t yet held. The birth mom wondering today—right now—how her child is doing, whether they’re happy, whether they know. The adoptive mom navigating big feelings and harder questions and a love so deep it sometimes scares her. The foster mom who kissed a forehead goodbye last week and cried the entire way home and then got up and did it again because that’s just who she is.

Here’s what I want you to hear: just because motherhood hurts doesn’t mean it isn’t love. In fact, it might mean it’s the realest love in the room.

Jesus didn’t hold back His love to protect Himself from pain. He walked straight into it—eyes open, arms wide.

Love that grieves, that sacrifices, that lets go when letting go is the most loving thing, that keeps showing up even when it’s hard and costly and nobody’s watching—that is Gospel love. That is cross-shaped, resurrection-paved, absolutely Heaven-honoring love.

If your love feels heavy this weekend, you are in the very best company. And you are not grieving alone.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit”—Psalm 34:18.

3. God sees you.

I want you to actually believe that for a second.

Maybe no one gives you a card this weekend. Maybe your story makes people go quiet and fidgety and suddenly very interested in their phones. (I have been there. I know that particular silence. It has a specific weight to it.)

But hear me: God sees you. You are not invisible to Him. Your story is not small. Your love is not wasted, not one drop of it.

You are not too complicated for the One who made you—which, honestly, is saying something, because some of us are a lot.

Remember Hagar? Cast out, alone, forgotten by literally everyone who was supposed to care—except she wasn’t forgotten, not by the One who actually mattered. Out of the wilderness, she encountered God and gave Him a name she created herself: El Roi. The God Who Sees Me.

That same God sees you this Mother’s Day weekend. In the heartache. In the sacrifice. In the brave, unseen, unglamorous, beautiful work of loving like Jesus.

Listen—I know this is a complicated day.

It stirs up things that stayed quiet all year. It brings real joy for some and real sorrow for others, and the tricky part is those people are often sitting side by side—at church, at the same brunch table, in the same family group text.

But friend? As painful as it may be, It is just a day. One day on a calendar. It does not get to define your worth or your motherhood or your value in the Kingdom of God. It holds no power over your future or the goodness God is still—still—writing into your story.

So from the very bottom of my heart—whether this weekend finds you holding babies close, or holding yourself together, or both—

I see you. He sees you. And that love? It’s not going anywhere.

There is hope in Jesus for the orphaned and vulnerable children we serve in Uganda. Though many of them find themselves in roles and situations no child should ever have to experience, God has not forgotten them. And he continues to pursue them.

Even when a child’s heart has hardened after tragedy, God works through discipleship and Gospel-centered, holistic care to show them they are seen, known, and loved.

For much of her life, Najja* knew about Jesus but still felt far away from Him.

But over time, in the presence of our team in Uganda, her heart began to soften.

In our schools, orphaned and vulnerable children take time to pause, reflect, pray, and read Scripture. At first, that wasn’t easy for Najja, but her mentors made a big difference.

With her mentors, Najja opened her Bible, asked questions, and started to understand what once felt out of reach. She learned that she was seen, known, and loved, not just by people on earth but by her Father in heaven.  

And from that transformation, Najja began to lead others in their faith too.

Today, Najja helps guide evening devotions and participates in morning quiet times, encouraging younger students in their faith.

She is learning steadfastness, even when doubts come. And she is discovering something beautiful about following Jesus: she was never meant to do it alone but in community.

Because you care about orphans, orphaned and vulnerable children like Najja are not only receiving food, education, and Gospel-centered, holistic care—they’re hearing the Gospel and learning what it means to follow Jesus in their everyday lives.

Patricia’s* story is similar.

For years, Patricia lived with her mother. Her father passed away when she was young, and she didn’t know much about him. So when her mother’s alcoholism made her ill, Patricia’s world fell apart.

Patricia stepped into the role of provider for her family, a role no child should have to carry. She dropped out of school and spent her days searching for food. She would call her older siblings for help, but if they didn’t have enough money, she and her mother went without. Some days, neighbors helped them but many days, there simply wasn’t anything to eat.

In 2025, Patricia’s mother passed away.

And suddenly, Patricia felt completely alone.

Her older brother, still young himself, became her only support. With no clear path forward, no resources, and no safety net, he did the only thing he could think to do—he asked for help.

Patricia was welcomed by our team in Uganda into a safe, loving environment. She returned to school, something she didn’t think she’d be able to do.   

Her faith changed too.

After wrestling through many deep and challenging questions about God, today, she shares—

“I learned to trust God and to stay strong in hard times. I know He has a plan for me.”

Patricia now dreams of studying law and wants to become a businesswoman. She is free to imagine her future—not with fear, but with purpose.

1 in every 10 children in Zambia is an orphan.

That’s close to 960,000 children under 18 years of age who have lost one or both of their parents. Children with neither parent have almost no ability to provide for themselves. And children with a single parent are highly vulnerable.

Single mothers and fathers work hard to provide for their kids, but with poor education and no vocational training themselves, they often can’t afford to pay for food, clothing, and school tuition for their children. Unless the pattern is disrupted, the cycle of generational poverty continues. 

But when a child walks into one of our classrooms at Lifesong Zambia New Day, everything changes. 

No longer are they defined by vulnerability, but by possibility. As orphans are discipled, cared for, and equipped, they gain the tools they need to build a hope-filled future for themselves and their families.  

Because when education expands, communities transform.

That’s why we’re expanding education to reach 200 more orphaned and vulnerable children in rural Zambia, so even more children from the surrounding community can have access to quality, Gospel-centered education free of charge. Without it, 200 more families will likely find themselves chained to inescapable poverty. 

Gertrude’s future is bright.

When she was just 5 years old, Gertrude’s parents passed away, and her grandmother took her in. Though her grandmother tried hard to provide, Gertrude frequently went without food and had no money for school tuition.

As time went on, her grandmother grew ill and couldn’t take care of her anymore. So Gertrude came to live with our team in Zambia. And her life has completely changed!

Now a follower of Jesus, Gertrude shares—

“God is my Father. He’s always there for me.”

She is thankful for her own clothing, a comfortable bed, nutritious food, and most of all, the opportunity to attend school. She dreams of becoming an oncologist or an obstetrician and hopes to attend university after graduating high school. Her career will minister to many as she cares for the sick and vulnerable.

Here’s what happens when we think about the world’s orphan crisis for too long:

We spiral. We start out with the best intentions—we’re going to learn, we’re going to do something—and somewhere around minute four, we’re sitting on the kitchen floor eating cereal straight from the box, wondering if anything we do matters at all.

Because the numbers are staggering. The need is enormous. And we’re just regular people with regular lives and regular grocery budgets, and sometimes the gap between the suffering we see and the good we can actually do feels so impossibly wide that it’s easier to just … not look.

But here’s what we know—not as a platitude, not as a bumper sticker, not as a cop-out for actually doing the hard work. This is bedrock truth, held by everyone who has sat with this crisis and kept coming back to it:

Pray with specificity.

God is not impressed by our religious-sounding generalities. “Lord, bless the orphans” is technically a prayer, but it’s also the spiritual equivalent of saying “someone should really do something about that.” God knows exactly which child is sleeping on a concrete floor tonight. He knows her name. He knows what she’s afraid of.

We should pray with particularity, with intention, with names when we have them.

We created this guide to help you pray with focus, depth, and staying power. Each day gives you a new lens—a child, a caregiver, a country, a need—and walks you through how to pray with specificity and faith.

But that number can flatten you—or it can drive you to your knees.

Let it drive you to your knees. Not because kneeling lets us off the hook from action, but because if we’re going to act with any wisdom, any staying power, or any hope that doesn’t fizzle out after the first fundraiser—we have to be people of prayer first.

So how do we do it? How do we pray in a way that’s real, specific and doesn’t feel like we’re just lobbing vague wishes at heaven and hoping something sticks?

Pray against the darkness.

Let’s say this clearly, because we can sometimes dance around it in polite Christian company: there are forces at work against vulnerable children that are not just systemic or political. They are spiritual.

Trafficking. Exploitation. Predators who target children without family protection. Poverty weaponized by greed. Corruption that swallows aid money while children go hungry.

Scripture is clear that our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). Which means we need to pray accordingly—with boldness. We do not pray timid, wishful prayers about these realities.

We pray the prayers of people who know who wins.

Pray for yourself, too.

This part might feel self-indulgent. It isn’t. Praying for God to shape our own hearts toward orphaned and vulnerable children is one of the most important things we can do. Because it is out of moved, softened, transformed hearts that actual action flows.

Pray to see what God sees, to feel what God feels, and for your comfortable assumptions to be disrupted. Pray for the courage to say yes when He asks you to do something terrifying and that your faith would grow big enough to match the need.

You didn’t stumble on this blog post by accident. Something in you is already paying attention. Something in you already cares. Lean into that. That stirring you feel? It isn’t random. It could be from a God who is relentlessly and creatively pursuing His kids and recruiting the people He made to help bring them home.

As a little girl, Leisa* moved from place to place with her father, never knowing how long she would stay.

Her mother, unable to provide for her, had no choice but to let her go. The family frequently went without food, shelter, and access to school.

Like so many children in similar circumstances, Leisa’s dreams felt out of reach.

But her story didn’t stop there—everything changed when Leisa was welcomed by our team in Haiti.

Little by little, Leisa regained what was lost: her sense of safety, security, dignity, and hope.

She found a safe and stable environment, consistent, nutritious meals, clothing, care, and above all, people who believed in her. And she pursued education with passion.

As mentors on our team invested in her life—encouraging her, discipling her, listening to her, and guiding her every step of the way—her dreams came into focus.

Today, Leisa attends university and is studying political science. She hopes to one day represent her country, a dream that once seemed unattainable.

What’s more, Leisa doesn’t aspire to succeed for herself alone.

As she grows and becomes a leader in her community, she is determined to give back.

She shares—

“I am where I am today because someone chose to invest in my life. My dream now is to do the same for others.”

Even with very limited resources, Leisa established a small solidarity fund to support orphaned and vulnerable children, mobilizing fellow university students to join her in this vision. Their goal is to offer children in need the same opportunity she was given. Currently, they organize food distributions for families in need.

But Leisa didn’t wait until she had enough to start. In faith, she started with what she had, because she knew all that God has done for her despite where she came from.

In her own words—

“When I look at my journey today, I clearly see the goodness of God in my life. There were moments when I saw no future ahead of me. But through the support I received, I was able to believe in my dreams. Today, my greatest dream is to help other children find hope.”

Leisa’s story reflects a powerful truth: when a child receives love, support, and opportunity, transformation happens … not just in the child’s life, but in the lives of those around them.

A few years ago, we introduced you to Roudelin—

a young man in Haiti who was learning to build homes while God was quietly rebuilding his life.

By the time he was 11, Roudelin had lost both of his parents, leaving him orphaned. As a boy, he leaned on the local church, where he found solace singing in the children’s choir and participating in church activities. The church became his family, and members stepped in to help, enrolling him in school.

Then, when he was a young adult, he was given the opportunity to work, learn, and eventually build a safe and secure home of his own with our team at Welcome Home Haiti.

Roudelin shares—

“After God, this opportunity has done more for me than anything else in my life.”

Over the past few years, Roudelin has continued growing—as an employee, a man, a husband, and a father.

He started by strengthening his carpentry skills—mentored by experienced builders who took the time to teach him everything from roofing to repairs.

Then, when an opportunity for advanced electrical training came his way, he was chosen to participate, based on his strong work ethic and integrity. He knew his new skills would not only serve him at work but could create new opportunities for him to provide for his family.

If you visited Roudelin’s home today, you might notice something small—but powerful. It’s constantly changing—piece by piece. That’s because every time Roudelin is paid, he invests back into his home—improving it, strengthening it, and making it a place where his family can thrive. It’s one of the ways Roudelin serves his wife, Goudline and their 3-year-old daughter.

And in a culture where fathers are often absent, Roudelin is the opposite. He takes care of his daughter’s needs kindly and gently, never afraid to be involved, change diapers, or play with her.

Roudelin’s wife, Goudline has dreams too that are now within reach.

She wants to open a small store with drinks, snacks, food staples, and hygiene items—something that could help provide steady income for their family and serve their community.

In her words—

“I want to help support our family and use my time well. I am praying we can save enough to start a small business.”

Roudelin and Goudline have learned that the hope they have found in Jesus changes everything: how they work, how they parent, and how they love each other. Together, with God’s help, they are determined to provide for their daughter the belonging, safety, and security that Roudelin never had.

In Moldova, foster parents faithfully care for children who have experienced deep loss and trauma.

Yet many do so without training in trauma-informed care. To better equip them for this important role, our team in Moldova held a training for foster families to teach them how early childhood experiences and brain development shape a child’s behavior and healing journey.

For more than 20 years, one foster mother in Moldova faithfully opened her home to children in need, loving and serving them with a heart rooted in Christ. But through the trauma-informed care training, the Lord revealed there was still more to learn.

As she listened, something shifted.

For the first time, she began to understand how early experiences shape a child’s brain, behavior, and ability to trust. She saw more clearly how trauma impacts development—and how deeply children need safe, stable families to begin healing. She shared—

“Today was a real discovery. I have been fostering children for more than 20 years … I simply didn’t know what I didn’t know.”

Her response wasn’t discouragement—it was hope.

“Now, I cannot wait to change and do better for the children in my care.”

She wasn’t alone. Other foster parents shared how meaningful it was to learn from real-life experiences. For many foster parents in Moldova, access to practical knowledge and lived experience is rare. Trainings like this provide encouragement, wisdom, and concrete strategies that help families navigate the complex needs of children who have experienced loss, neglect, or trauma.

One family was amazed at what they learned from our team. Before the training, they believed orphaned and vulnerable children were too wounded to begin to heal. But after learning about current research and trauma-informed care, their perspectives changed. They shared—

“We discovered that children really can change when they grow up in a healthy family environment. They need to experience love, respect, and consistent care. This gives us motivation to continue putting these principles into practice.”

Thanks to this training, the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Moldova are being changed:

• Children are experiencing safety.
• Hearts are beginning to heal.
• And families are being strengthened.

As foster and adoptive families continue learning and growing, they are equipped to help their children process pain, and by God’s grace, begin to thrive.

People often think of orphan care as rescue.

Get a vulnerable child off the street.
Feed them.

And yes—meeting urgent needs is where it starts. Meeting needs matters deeply.

But over decades of reaching orphaned and vulnerable children around the world with Gospel-centered care, Lifesong has learned something important: sometimes caring for a child means caring first for the child’s family and community.

Sometimes it’s creating dignified jobs that pay fairly: building a farm that employs a mother and creating businesses whose profits fund the school down the road—so her children can actually attend.

In other words, orphan prevention and family preservation look a lot like ordinary work, done faithfully, over time.

Redemptive business is in our DNA at Lifesong. While 70–80% of orphaned children face unemployment, your partnership can flip that script—helping each child become gainfully employed and breaking the orphan cycle for good.

Here’s what that looks like in practice.

The Girl Who Could Have Been a Different Story

Dorothy’s father died before she and her twin brother were born, leaving her mother as the sole provider for eight children in a community where stable work is scarce and school fees are out of reach.

When Dorothy was seven, her aunt brought her to Lifesong School. She received a fee-free education, two meals a day, and faithful mentorship from teachers who cared.

Dorothy graduated in 2019. Today, she works at Lifesong Farms alongside her mother, who also works for Lifesong Farms.

“Without Lifesong Farms, my mom would not have managed to take me and my siblings to school. I might have been married just so that I can have support, and I wouldn’t know Jesus.”

When Lifesong Farms employed Dorothy’s mother, the family was able to stay together. Which also enabled Dorothy to stay in school. And now Dorothy is a role model in her community for the next generation of girls.

The ripple is still moving.

He Came as an Intern and Now He’s a Leader.

Growing up in Zambia without either of his parents, Bernard enrolled at Lifesong School in 2014, not knowing what to expect. He found an education. He also found a community, a deepening faith and—for the first time—a solid place to land.

After graduating in 2020, he joined Lifesong Farms as an intern and was quickly given responsibility for packaging operations. He now leads a crew of workers and invests in their lives and growth.

“Lifesong has done a lot for my life. I became a Christian here. And I learned how to humble myself and also how to do my work.”

Bernard’s story is one example among many that sustainable business isn’t charity. It’s investment—in people, in futures, and in a country’s next generation of leaders.

Our graduates develop job skills in nursing, agriculture, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, auto-mechanics, IT, construction, and tailoring. When meaningful job skills are created, poverty cycles are broken.

In Zambia, Lifesong Farms was just the beginning. Today, a solar energy business is already up and running, and the renovated Lifesong Lodge—a guest house welcoming work teams and visitors from the public—is open for stays, with proceeds flowing back into the ministry. New ventures in construction, automotive, and vision care are underway as well.

Each business is rooted in the same idea: that a dignified job—along with knowledge of the God Who provided it—can change the trajectory of a life.

From Uganda to Ukraine: Business Fueling Mission

Every morning, someone in America drinks a cup of coffee and doesn’t think much about it.

In Uganda, that same cup tells a different story.

In a new partnership launched last year, Lifesong is equipping 400 Ugandan coffee farmers with something they’ve never had: proper processing, drying, and storage facilities. Their coffee beans are exported to the United States and sold to roasters across the country—at a fair price that actually reaches the hands that grew them.

But the coffee is just the beginning. The goal of this business fueling mission is to fund schools, preserve families, and strengthen local ministry to orphaned and vulnerable children.

Half a world away, a different crop. The same conviction.

In Ukraine, Lifesong Farms harvested over 300,000 pounds of fruit this past season—generating a record $1 million in sales, in the middle of a war. Behind those numbers are 150-plus employees, most of them orphan graduates or members of vulnerable families, showing up every day to grow something—berries, yes, but also dignity, stability, and hope.

And every dollar of net profit flows directly back into our ministry in Ukraine.

Uganda and Ukraine. Coffee and berries. Two countries, two crops, one idea: that ordinary work, done faithfully, can change the story of a generation.

Not Rescue. Transformation.

None of these headlines made the news. None of them happened in a single dramatic moment. They happened slowly, over time, through fair wages and faithful mentorship. Through Bible studies on Thursday mornings and harvests in the middle of a war.

This is what sustainable business makes possible. Not just jobs—but a model that is strategic, scalable, and sustainable. Building a different future for vulnerable children and families, one ordinary day at a time.

Some stories begin in hardship but grow into testimonies of resilience and hope.

Galia’s* story is one of them.

When Galia was very young, her mother passed away. She remained in the care of her father, but circumstances in her home placed her safety and well-being at risk.

Because of these concerns, local authorities determined that she should be placed in an orphanage when she was just 5 years old.

And soon, our team in Bolivia became the stability and safety she lacked at home.

Although members of her extended family maintained occasional contact, our team in Bolivia has been by her side every step of her journey, offering Gospel-centered, holistic care and a safe place to grow. Her mentors and caregivers have helped her build a foundation for her future.

Today, Galia is learning skills that will help prepare her to transition smoothly into adulthood and live independently.

She attends a technical program focused on cooking and baking, a skill she approaches with dedication and enthusiasm. During school vacations, she has even gained work experience.

She is also currently finishing her final year of secondary school and will graduate soon with her high school diploma. These opportunities allow her to build confidence and develop responsibility.

But Galia’s dreams go beyond baking.

She plans to continue her education so she can become a math teacher, reflecting both her determination to grow and her desire to make a difference in the lives of those around her.

Galia’s story is a powerful reminder that a difficult beginning does not have to define a child’s future.

With continued support, encouragement, and guidance from God, Galia is stepping forward with hope, demonstrating that it is possible to flourish in spite of adversity.
