5 Unique DIY Betta Tank Ideas

Here are a few ideas if you are looking for a unique betta tank design. Most of these posts have a link to instructions on how to build them. If you're designing a betta tank on your own, try to keep it on the larger side, and always remember to include a lid in your set up. Betta's are excellent jumpers and we want them to stay in their tanks, not on the floor!

1. Framed Fish Tank

I stumbled upon this idea and thought it was really neat. instructions on how to make it can be found here. I would love to take this idea one step further and have a hole in the wall approximately the size of the fish tank, and set the fish tank in there so the tank sits "on the wall" like a picture.

2. Gumball Machine Betta Tank

This is a neat little idea for a betta tank. It works well because you could hide a bubbler underneath if you wished, or lights in the hood. Here is a basic step by step on how to make a basic on of these. I would try and find a bigger gumball machine than the one pictured however.

3. Coffee Pot Betta Tank

A coffee pot is perhaps the perfect household item to modify into a betta tank, it has a built in heater, and you could even make a convert the back of it into a filter if you where really ambitious. This guy has a pretty good walk through on how to make one, and is the original source of the image to the left, he does a little bit more than just a tank set up. For example you can see the current temperature of the water displayed below the coffee pot in the picture, and he embeds LED's into the lid of the coffee pot.

4. Betta Hydroponics

Why not combine a love of fishkeeping with a love of growing plants? A hydroponic set up allows for the plants to help clean the water, improving the well being of your betta. The waste from the betta will also allow the plants to flourish. The image pictured is a product made by Back to the Roots, but it wouldn't be that difficult to design you're own.

5. Computer Aquarium

Those old Macs aren't of much use any more, but you can modify it into a fantastic Betta tank. You could do this with TV's or any other kind of older monitor as well! Here is a gallery with a few different angles of the picture shown.

5 Things Worth Their Weight In Gold In a Zombie Apocolypse

There are a select few people who are preparing for an upcoming zombie apocalypse. Those individuals will no doubt already know everything I am going to say. For the average zombie apocalypse survivor however; it would be nice to know which items would be the most useful. Money will likely become worthless, so people will turn to bartering. The question becomes what items would be the most valuable in a post-apocalyptic zombie barter economy? Well that's what we're going to talk about!

5. Food

Within a few weeks of zombie shit hitting the fan, everyone will be starving as the supermarket is raided and everyone's personal stockpile starts to dry up. Food may be among the most valuable items until post-zombie settlements/ emerge with their own farms/raid parties to keep everyone fed.

4. Ammo/Weapons

An unfortunate truth of life in a post-zombie world is that there are zombies. Many, many zombies! While those in the country will be better off than their urban counterparts, everyone will need a weapon at some point.

This guy thinks blunt weapons are the way to go, and while that may be the case, using one still involved you getting up and personal to a brain starved zombie to do any damage. Guns will likely be the most valuable weapon simply because no one wants to get close to a zombie if they can help it, regardless of a weapons efficiency. Of course flame throwers would be ideal.

3. Batteries

Lets face it, aside from those lucky enough to get their hands on a generator, the majority of survivors are going to be without power. This means battery operated lanterns and flash lights are going to be critical for survival. Items such as lights, cooking equipment, and radios that would normally need to be plugged into a wall socket could be rigged up to batteries instead as well.

2. Medical Supplies

So you're bitten on the neck by a zombie, what do you do? 99% of the time your going to turn into a zombie and shamble the streets along with the rest of the undead. Even though you're doomed, you try using all the medical supplies you can, alcohol, gauze, anti-bacterial/viral meds to try and stop the zombiefication process.

Regardless of zombies bites, people are still going to get sick and injured as they do today. In all likley hood the hospitals and pharmacies are shut down, and getting medication for the flu, or bandages for a burn could be difficult. Doctors and nurses that raided their hospital as the zombie-apocolypse took place would be extremely well off individuals (by zombie survival standards).

1. Water

Especially if the zombie disease is water-borne. If this is the case, you can expect a fresh bottle of water to be worth it's weight in gold in a post-apocalyptic zombie economy. This is especially true in an urban setting, where access to clean drinking water would be limited.

Most of those reading this will have heard a cat purr at some point, but did you know that not all species of cats can purr? For example a lion cannot purr, while a snow leopard can purr. There's another sound many cats make, called chuffing, which is used in when a tiger greets another tiger or to apologize. The following is a list of many species of cats, and whether they purr, chuff, or roar.

6 Amazing Older Overlooked PC Games

I don't know if it's nostalgia or what it is but I love 90's and early 2000's era PC games. Everyone know's about classics from that era such as Roller Coaster Tycoon and Starcraft, but there are many other amazing games from that time period. Here's a list of 6 Amazing Older Overlooked PC Games.

6. Monopoly Tycoon

This is a game that I got for a gift and was honestly going to pass by without playing. I'm glad I tried it out though because it was tons of fun! It's a hybrid of Monopoly and Sim City. It's more of a city management game than a board game. Definitely recommend trying this one out.

5. Sacrifice

I saw one of my friends playing this game forever ago and thought it was one of the funniest games ever. It's a mix of RPG and RTS, you're a wizard commanding armies from a first person perspective rather than the omnipotent style of most RTS's. Every unit drops souls upon death and they are the 'currency' of the game. If you like RPG's and RTS's, this is a fun one.

4. Maxis Games

I'm adding Maxis Games in here because even though the maxis games where well known, it's likley that you looked over atleast one of them. These were some of the best games I've played, with SimCopter getting special recognition for being my favourite. Many hourse where spent smashing into buildings while trying to chase down a robber, or trying to put out a fire.

Some of the best Maxis games were: SimCopter, SimAnt, SimEarth, Streets of Sim City, SimFarm, SimLife, SimIsle, SimSafari, SimPark, and SimTower.

3. Jurrassic Park: Tresspasser

Boob's and Dinosaurs. What more do you want from a video game?

It's arguable whether this game was overlooked, or was just a shitty game. I personally had great fun with the game, but there were definitely some bugs to be had. The game got bad reviews for clunky graphics and lagging on most PC's at the time. The open world atmosphere and scale of the game however had me entertained!

2. Theme Hospital

I probably spent more time on this game than any other game I own. You run a hospital, curing tons of fictional diseases such as "The Squits", "Uncommon Cold", and "Bloaty Head". You have to deal with angry doctors and puking patients, there's even a rat shooting level!

1. Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds

This is a unique RTS. The infrastructure management and unit building is turn-based, but the actual battles are real time. It's based on H.G. Wells novel and came out well before the Tom Cruise movie based on the same novel. It can be quite challenging, early and late game the Martians have a distinct advantage, but mid-game the human's seem to be stronger. If you want a unique game that's tons of fun, try this one out. There was also a first person shooter spin off of this game released a year later by Jeff Wayne as well for Play Station.

Trolls, Goblins, and Wolve/Wargs in The Hobbit vs The Lord of the Rings

Let me first say that The Hobbit was amazing! Now that we have that out of the way, there is some interesting differences between the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit seems much more light hearted than the Lord of the rings, which is true of the books as well. For example Gandalf is considerably more light hearted in the Hobbit than the Lord of the Rings. If you look at the following picture:

It's obvious that even the design of certain enemies is different. In Lord of the Rings, the trolls were presented as beasts, they didn't talk or have personalities. For the famous troll scene in the hobbit however, it was necessary to have the trolls talk. The trolls features and movements where also much more human.

As the following two instalments of the Hobbit come out, I'll be sure to make a more complete comparison of creatures and characters in the two series.

I think this is a very interesting and plausible explanation for the differences in appearance.

Website in Focus #2: The Oatmeal

Time for the second installment of websites in focus! For those who haven't heard of The Oatmeal, it's a popular comedy site based on comics/infographics and a certain artistic style. I personally think it's a hilarious website.
The site has more than just comics, it also has quizes such as how many Justin Beibers can you take in a fight, or how long can you survive chained to a bed with a velociraptor. The site has an awesome graphic after the quizes that you can use to share you results, I posted one of mine below.

Apparently I don't survive long.

Aside from having great content, I noticed this guy is an expert at promoting his site. The sharable, graphical results of the quiz above are a great idea and he uses social media like a champ. Even if you don't find the site interesting (which I would be shocked if you don't) you can still learn a few things from looking at how this site promotes itself.

The 13 Dwarves of The Hobbit

For those who haven't read the hobbit, or those that have but forgotten the details, let me refresh you one who each of the 13 dwarves in the Hobbit are. Part 1 of the three part Hobbit movie's coming out on the 14th of December! First though, the obligatory trailer for the movie! Click read more to see it.

Now is that not the most exciting thing you've ever seen! Anyways, back to the topic at hand .. who exactly are these dwarves that drag Bilbo Baggins along in their adventure?

Fili & Kili

Fili and Kili are brothers, and Thorin's nephews. They die fighting alongside Thorin in the battle of five armies. They are the two youngest dwarves in the adventure, and are often sent on scouting missions for the group due to their keen eyesight. Fili, Kili and Bilbo together find the hidden door into Smaug's lair in the Lonely Mountain (Erebor).

Oin & Gloin

Brother to Gloin, Oin is a relatively minor character in the story. He fought, and survived the battle of five armies. After the events of the Hobbit, he returns to the Mine of Moria after some time with the goal to reclaim it for the dwarves. He is killed by the Watcher in the Water at the west gate of the mines.

Brother to Oin, Gloin is also the father of a particularly important dwarf in the Lord of the Rings, Gimli. He fought and survived the battle of five armies, and after the events in the Hobbit settled down in the lonely mountains.

Thorin Oakenshield

Thorin is the only member of royalty in the group. He gets his name from a battle in the Mines of Moria with goblins in which he took up an oak branch to defend himself when his shield was cloven in two. He was a young child living in the lonely mountain when the dragon Smaug took it from the dwarves.

Dwalin

Brother of Balin, Dwalin is the first dwarf to arrive at Bilbo's house, and is third in command after Thorin and Balin. He survived the battle of five armies and settled down living a long (even for a dwarf) life and having many children.

Brother of Dwalin, Balin is second in command of the dwarves. He fought in the Battle of Five Armies and survived. He is known as their look out, and is the first to see the elves in Mirkwood. He also leads the escape from the spiders in Mirkwood. He is the only dwarf that offered to go with Bilbo as he entered the dragons lair. He meets his death in Moira at the hands of a goblin archer when the dwarves try to re-colonize the mines.

Cousin to Bofur and Bombur, I don't know if you noticed but Bifur has an axe in his head. This causes a slight disability with him in the upcoming film, and he is not able to speak any language except Khuzdul, the dwarves secret language. He fought in and survived the Battle of Five Armies.

Brother of Bombur and cousin of bifur, Bofur did not differentiate himself in the books much. I am interested to see his role in the movies. He survived the Battle of Five Armies.

Brother of Bofur and cousin of Bifur, Bombour is the comic relief of the party. He is an exceptionally fat dwarf, and his love of food causes him to build a solid friendship with Bilbo Baggins (all hobbits love food). He is clumsy and forgetful and often falls asleep on the job. Surprisingly, he survives the battle of five armies.

Dori

Brother of Nori and Ori, physically he is the strongest of the dwarves. He was also the dwarf that carried Bilbo as they escaped from the goblins in the misty mountains. Unfortunately Dori dropped Bilbo in the escape and the rest of the dwarfs blamed him for losing Bilbo. He fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies.

Brother of Dori and Ori, Nori is an excellent flute player. After the adventure of the Hobbit, he stayed in the Mountain they reclaimed from Smaug the dragon.

Brother of Nori and Dori, Ori also plays the flute. He settles in Moria after the events in the hobbit and is killed when the goblins invade Moria. He is the one who wrote the book Gandalf reads before the Moria troll battle in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.

6 Most Annoying Video Game Characters

Anyone who has ever played a video game has come across a character they hate, whether it be those damned ghosts from PacMan, or the 14 year old kid screaming into the microphone playing halo. I've decided to put together a list of what I consider to be 6 of the most annoying characters in video game history.

6. Slippy from StarFox

The engineer of the StarFox crew, he needs to learn to stay in the garage. Slippy has to be the most incompetent pilot in the history of video games. After having the phrase "Fox! Get this guy off me!" drilled into the very fibre after only a few levels, you really wonder how this amphibious laser magnet passed pilot school. Of course it's never ending, because as soon as you bail Slippy out of a tough situation, he immediately re-joins the battle declaring revenge instead of polishing hammers in the garage like he should be.

5. Gary Oak (or any rival) from Pokemon

He's slept with all these ladies, and won't even share.

This guy feels the need to design his whole Pokemon career around you in an attempt to piss you off. As we all know, he chooses his starting pokemon based on what will kick your starting Pokemon's ass for the entire rest of the game! He also defeats all the gym leaders before you and feels the need to occasionally wait for you and shove them in your face. Of the 8 badges available in the first Pokemon series, he earned ten of them. He's the overachieving pompous brat from high school everyone hopes is scrubbing toilets at their 10 year re-union.

4. Mr. Resetti from Animal Crossing

Mr. Ressetti is perhaps the most appropriately named video character ever. If you dare to try to cheat in Animal Crossing by reseting the game, a shit storm is headed your way, and that shit storm's name is Mr. Resetti. When you return to the game after resetting, Mr. Resetti immediately confronts you, and will not let you play until he's satisfied. Sometimes he'll just yell at you, other times he'll make you type out an apology.

3. Moira Brown from Fallout 3

Why.... are you telling me this?

Pointless side quests abound! Moira exists for no other reason than to send you on pointless experimental side-quests for her book (such as standing in a pool of radiation) that would kill any normal person. Sure, some of the perks you get from the quest are kindof nice, but It's a real challenge not to nuke the whole Megaton town just for the satisfaction of ridding her from the game. Except that even if you nuke the whole town, she is the one person that survives and returns as a ghoul.

2. Zelda series: Na'vi, Tingle, and that friggin owl.

Look at him, just look at him! That little green elf looking thing is tingle, looking like that how could he ever be anything but irritating! Majora's mask was scarring enough to young minds without the addition of Tingle. Those that have played the Wind Waker know him as an even more annoying character than in Majora's Mask in many ways, one of which is charging you 1 more rupee than you currently have the ability to carry, forcing you to get a wallet upgrade, he even has his own island.

Even more iconic than tingle, is Navi. She has annoying millions of players with her "Hey, Listen! Hey, Listen! Hey, Listen!" over every little thing in the game. Finally that owl from Ocarina of Time, he just drones on and on and I swear the developers were trolling, because if you keep pressing "a" to skip it, you eventually get to a message that says something like "press a if you would like me to repeat myself".

1. Duck Hunt Dog from Duck Hunt

I actually still have and play the original duck hunt, and I can tell you that this guys is legitimately as annoying as everyone says he is. You can hit 30 ducks in a row and he'll still give you the same condescending laugh when you inevitably do miss one. The dog would be the first instance of a video game mocking your skill many of us have ever experienced, and this is why this dog has rightfully earned the title of the most annoying video game character.

5 Potentially Habitable Alien Planets

I've always loved both astronomy and biology. It makes sense then that I get really excited when the two topics are combined, such as in the search for exterrestrial life. While we have plenty of options for potentially habitable worlds in our own solar system, none of them really resemble earth. The following is a list of five planets outside our solar system that are quite earth-like and would be more likely to host life as we know it.

I'm particular interested in Gliese 581g and Gliese 581d, as they're from the same system. It seems like it would be an obvious target for further study with two potential life bearing worlds. I get the feeling gliese 581g would be more Earth like, while Gliese 581d would be more similar to Mars in terms of friendliness to life.

This is a new concept to the site called "Website in Focus". The idea is every few weeks or so to share a site I've come across that I think it truly interesting.

The first site I found is actually really amazing. It's a flash program that gives a size comparison between pretty much everything in the universe, from the smallest particles known to science to the full size of the Universe itself. You just use the scroll bar at the bottom to flip through the different sizes of objects.

8 Unique Keyboards

People seemed to like the 10 Most Unique Coffee Mugs post, so I thought it would be a good idea to continue the theme. This time we have a collection of some of the most interesting keyboards around.

1. Bamboo keyboard and mouse.

The key's and just about everything else in this combo are made out of bamboo. Perfect if you're going for a natural look. I'd be very interested to try typing on this.

2. Scrabble Keyboard

At first glance, this one looks quite similar to the bamboo keyboard. Upon further inspection however, you'll notice the keys are made from scrabble letters, and the keys that aren't found in a scrabble game (like numbers) have a scrabble themed font.

They're not for sale... yet, but the guys website that made them is here, and he's talking about selling them if he gets the legal issues figured out

3. Das Keyboard

The Das keyboard model S Ultimate keyboard doesn't have any letters printed on it. The reasoning is that the fastest typists don't look at their keys, and this keyboard forces you to memorize where your keys are. It''s also uses a mechanical gold plated system for the key switches instead of the standard film system uses by most keyboards.

4. Optimus Tactus Touchscreen Keyboard

The Optimus Tactus Touchscreen keyboard is a keyboard without keys. The whole unit is one big touch screen, and you can change the key layouts to resemble a keyboard, video player, or even photoshop.

The keyboard is still in it's design phase unfortunately, but the companies current Optimus Maximus keyboard is one of the best around, featuring individual keys with programmable LED displays.

5. Roll-Up Keyboards

These are cool, super portable keyboards. I would think they'd be cool with tablets if you don't like the touch screen keyboard.

You can buy one for $19.99.

6. Virtual Infrared Keyboard

This keyboard has no buttons, it simply shows a picture of a keyboard and senses where your fingers are. I question how well this would work but it still seems cool!

It's an expensive keyboard at $169.99.

7. Steampunk Keyboard

Like the steampunk mouse mentioned in another article, the steam punk keyboard is a homemade creation. I don't know of anywhere you can buy one like this, but it's a great idea for those DIY'ers out there that are a fan of steampunk.

8. Orbitouch keyless keyboard

I thought this odd keyboard was a set if speakers when I first saw it. No, it's a keyless keyboard designed for people with limited movement in their hands. The two dials have many combinations that when turned to, correspond to a letter on a keyboard, or a click of a mouse. It actually replaces both the mouse and the keyboard.

These keyboards are pricey though, at $399.

Okay so this one isn't actually a keyboard, it's a waffle iron. It is a waffle iron that makes keyboard shaped waffles though! So it's definitely worth a mention.

3 Stereotypically Badass Animals That Are Actually Wimps

There are some truly bad-ass animals in nature, lions, tigers, and bears all have a reputation of being forces to be reckoned with. Some other animals that we often think of this way are actually not as tough or scary as we've been lead to believe. You see so many posts about awesome animals on the internet, this is going to be a bit different. It's about the carnivores who are least capable. Species that crave blood, yet flee at the slightest struggle.

3. Piranha

Dip your hand into a river full of piranhas and you can expect it to be shredded to the bone right? No, not at all. They're actually quite wimpy, and will flee a person swimming in water much the same way trout or minnows do. They only prey on animals that are severely injured, or dead. That being said, they do eat meat, and fast! But they don't go around hunting down everything in the amazon, in fact they're a prey item for many animals in the rain forest and are apparently quite tasty.

2. Calabar Burrowing Python

Pythons are those big extremely muscular snakes that kill by squeezing an animal to death right? Well yes, except this particular python is to weak to do what it pythons do best, constrict. They feed on infant rodents, being to weak to take down an adult mouse, and typically don't even constrict their prey, but would rather kill them by squishing them against a wall or laying on them.

Doesn't look to tough.

They have a weak bite as well and have no means to defend itself other than to hide it's head, tuck into a ball and offer it's fatty tail section in hopes that the real predator eats that instead.

1. Humans

Think about it, we kill and consume almost every creature on this planet. Yet how many of us would willingly kill a mouse with our bare hands? I bet most of you reading would much prefer to do so with something less... messy. I mean guts and stuff is gross right?

What do you mean you want me to TOUCH it!?

See that's my point, a wolf just goes head first into the intestines of a deer and tears off whatever it bites down on, and is friggen happy to do so. Us humans, top predators that we are, rely on artificially manufactured tools and weaponry to kill things. Even small harmless things like mice or spiders that we could easily kill without weapons, many of use are wimpy around. We used to be bad ass hunters (ask the mammoths), but modern society has turned most of us into wimps.

10 Unique & Awesome Computer Mice

I love customizing my computers. While it's usually the desktop or icons, the hardware that goes along with my computer can't be ignored! It seems as if the humble computer mouse is the computer peripheral with the most variety in customization. here's 10 unique, creative, and odd computer mice.

1. Finger Mouse

This is the smallest mouse I've seen. As you can see, it's about the size of a lighter. The front of the button acts as the left click, and the back of the button acts as the right click, with the scroll wheel on the side. I really liked the idea of this, until I realized I wouldn't be using the other four fingers for much anyway while on the computer, so why not use a normal sized mouse?

2. Blow Up Mouse

Here's an odd little mouse. It's a completely inflatable mouse. You blow it up, just as you would a air mattress or balloon. Unfortunately it's still a concept, and there's no mouse (that I know of) like this available at the moment.

3. 8-bit Pointer Hand

4 Reasons why Avatar is the Twilight of Sci-Fi.

Crazy resemblance!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 90% of you have seen either Avatar or Twilight. A similar number of people probably like one of the two (and maybe even both!). I've noticed alot of similarities between the two, a crappy story line, pussy characters, and I swear I saw one of the Na'vi sparkle once! Here are four reasons why Avatar is the Twilight of Sci-Fi.

1. Story

Avatar is a chick flick diguised as a guys movie. The terrible love story is hidden behind the premise of explosions(Hoorah!) and cool aliens (which aren't even that cool, well the giant birds are).

Twilight is a chick flick disguised as a guys movie. Again, a terrible love story is hidden behind the premise of vampires and werewolves fighting. How could they mess that up? Underworld seemed to have no problem making money fighting werewolves and vampires without making them sparkle.

Only one is actually a book.

The only difference is, guys realized Twilight was a lie before going, and only realized they had been tricked by Avatar after they went.

2. Box Office

Both of them were massive hits!

Now obviously Twilight took three movies to even come close to Avatar, but they both passed the 2 billion in revenues mark. Why is it that they were so popular, yet suck so much? I'm not sure, you'll have to read #4 on this list to find out.

3. Pussy-fy a Otherwise Bad-Ass Concept.

Twilight turned badass vampires (think underworld) into pussies that won't even drink blood.

Dracula would be proud

Avatar turned aliens from the destroyer of worlds (Vogons!) into a furrie's dream girl.

Vampires are supposed to eat people, not sparkle on them while flipping their hair around.Similarly, when humans and aliens meet, 90% of the time one of them is going to be killing the other. Aliens aren't supposed to be sexy (All the Mass Effect fans immediately stopped reading here). Real aliens are supposed to look like the ones from District Nine or the martians from War of the Worlds.

4. They're both Brain Candy.

As bad as they are people just can't get enough of them. My girlfriend knows twilight is a terribly written story, yet still loves it. In the same way, I know Avatar is essentially Pocahontas in space, but I love it. You know why? Because there's explosions in Avatar! As for Twilight, I have no idea. Perhaps some twilight fans would care to enlighten us on it's appeal?

An axe? No thanks, I have missiles!

As a final note, I've never watched Twilight, but I've heard all about it, and I watched Avatar more times than I'd care to admit. Fun Fact, both Avatar and Pocahontas were released in theaters on December 18th.

9 Animals that are Self-Aware

What is self-awareness? It's described in the Oxford English Dictionary as "conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires". Essentially it's a measure of intelligence. There are only a handful of creatures in the animal kingdom that are self-aware, as it requires a great deal of intellect.

The most common testing method for self-awareness in animals is the mirror test. A coloured dot is placed on the animal in a location they wouldn't normally be able to see (such as between their eyes or on their nose). The animal is then given a mirror, and if they realize that the dot is on their own face and then try to remove it, it shows that the animal is aware that the reflection is of themselves. Animals that fail the mirror test often just play or attack their reflection, you've probably seen your cat or dog do this.

So which animals have we determined to be self-aware? All of the following animals have passed the mirror test so far.

1. Chimpanzee

If any animal aside from humans was going to be self-aware, we would expect it to be our closest living relatives, the chimps. Like humans, they can only recognize themselves after a certain age (baby chimps and humans don't pass the mirror test).

2. Bottlenose dolphin

The first aquatic member of this list is the beloved bottlenose dolphin. I'm only aware of tests being done on bottlenose dolphins and orcas, but would be very interested in any tests done with other dolphin species.

3. Bonobo

Bonobo's are a more promiscuous, less violent cousin of the chimpanzee. Think of them as the hippies of the great apes. Since they are so closely related to chimps, it's no surprise that they pass the mirror test as well.

Yes, I censored the Bonobo's testicles. They were HUGE.

4. Elephant

Elephants are the only non-primate terrestrial mammal able to pass the mirror-test. They are arguably one of the most intelligent mammals in the world and should come as no surprise that they passed the test. I'm unsure if both the African and Asian elephant's have passed the test, or only one variety of elephant has.

5. Orca

The second aquatic member of this list is also a member of the dolphin family. I Wasn't able to find any videos of them taking the mirror test, but I did find the abstract to a paper in which the mirror test was given to orcas, false killer whales, and sea lions.

6. Gorilla

Gorilla's initially were thought to fail the mirror test. Further testing showed that since gorilla's found eye contact as an expression of aggressiveness, it was difficult for them to overcome the initial fear of looking themselves in the eye. Gorilla's such as Koko have proven that gorilla's do recognize themselves in the mirror once they get over the initial aggressive response.

7. Magpie (European)

Magpie's are the only bird known to have passed the mirror test. Not only are they the only bird, they are the only non-mammal species in the world that has passed the mirror test. They are closely related to crows, another bird well known for it's intelligence.

8. Orangutan

Watch the video under the Chimp and go to the 4:45 mark in the video to see the mirror test on an orangutan. Not surprised that they made it on the list either, as all the other great apes have.

9. Humans

Humans are an obvious example of an animal that can pass the mirror test. Babies tend to fail the test until they are 18 months old. You'll notice that all the great apes (humans, bonobo's, chimpanzee's, gorilla's, and orangutans) are mentioned on this list. An interesting note is that all non-great ape primates have failed the mirror test.

Some other animals that have exhibited abnormal levels of intelligence when exposed to a mirror, but have not passed the mirror test include pigeons and rhesus monkeys.

3 Observations about the Internet Movements/Crazes

In light of the Kony 2012 craze, I have been thinking about how the internet treats "movements", and how it can be used to push an agenda. I've noticed three different traits that are consistent between varies movements, fads, and causes that take the internet by storm.

1. Can only push one major subject at a time.

Much like the users that frequent the web, the internet itself seems to have limited attention, only able to focus on one craze at a time. Currently, it's impossible to spend any time on a major social media/bookmarking site without seeing Kony 2012 mentioned. Under this environment I highly doubt something else could go as viral at the same time. For example if Kony 2012 and SOPA were both issues that came to light at the exact same time, one of them would win out and become the buzz of the internet, while the other would not see much exposure. The one that did not see as much exposure would likely either fad away or have to wait until the current buzz dies down to become wide spread.

2. The movement doesn't last long.

The crazes fueled by the internet can last from a few days (arrow to the knee) to close to a month (the SOPA/PIPA movement) and have a short lull in between them. Very few (none come to mind) last much longer than a month. Most movements are much shorter, usually a week or so before critics start to bring the craze down, or people just simply get bored of it. As of writing this, the "critic" phase is just beginning for the Kony 2012 craze.

3. The internet has no moral preference.

From righteous causes such as Kony 2012, to the despicable life ruining events events surrounding Jessi Slaughter and her father, to the completely trivial craze of Jessica Blacks "Friday" song, the internet has no preferred moral leaning. Is this because people have no preferred moral leaning? No, I think it's much more complicated than that, but at its core probably has to do more with what kind of content goes viral rather than people focusing on any type of moral standard.

I know this is a little different from the usual Darth Vader dance offs and Kick-Butt fish lists of this site, but we all need to be serious once and a while!

10 Most Badass Sharks In the World

I stated in the 10 Most Badass Fish post that I excluded sharks because I didn't want them to make up half the list. It's only natural then that I should write a list dedicated to the most amazing (modern... I'm looking at you Megalodon fans) sharks on earth. There are so many other bad ass sharks that I wish made this list, as always it's always hard to narrow it down to just ten.

10. Shortfin Mako (Isurus oxyrinchus)

The shortfin mako makes the list by virtue of being the fastest shark on earth, clocking in at 72 kilometers (45 miles) an hour. It is also one of only four known functionally warm-blooded sharks, this allows it to much much more active than it's cold-blooded cousins (almost all other sharks). This active life style suits it well, as the mako sharks main prey items are other fast moving creatures such as mackerel, tuna, swordfish, squid, other sharks, and even small dolphins.

The mako shark's teeth are slender and pointed with no serrations. They are designed for grabbing and keeping a hold of prey rather than slicing large chunks of flesh off the prey item. This is important, as mentioned earlier mako's prey on fast moving animals, so it's necessary that they not allow their prey to escape their jaws or else the prey item will dart away, leaving the mako hungry.

The shark can grow up to 4.45 m (14'7" feet), but are more commonly around 2m (6'7") in length.

9. Cookie Cutter Shark (Isistius brasiliensis)

Look at those teeth! Even though it only reaches 56cm (17-22 inches) in length, the cookie cutter shark is a nasty little fellow who is completely indiscriminate in prey items. The shark preys on everything from tuna to blue whales, and many of the other sharks on this list! The cookie cutter shark bites a perfectly circular wound about 5cm (2 inches) in diameter and 7cm (2.8 inches) deep from the chosen victim. This may or may not kill the sharks prey, depending on how big the prey is, and were the wound is.

Ouch! Pictured above is a fresh cookie cutter shark bite on a dolphin. in areas with a high population of cookie cutter sharks, larger whales can often have hundreds of scars from cookie cutter shark bites over the years.

8. Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus)

The Greenland shark is a shark of extremes Reaching lengths of up to 6.4m (21 ft) and weighing up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb), it's one of the larger predatory sharks on earth. Greenland Sharks have been found with fresh polar bear remains in it's stomach, Suggesting that it did indeed kill the bear and didn't just scavenge a carcass that sank to the ocean floor. Any creature that can kill the biggest bear on earth is bad ass in my books. They can be found at a depth of 2,200m (7,200 ft) up to 180m (600 ft) with them venturing into shallow from time to time to grab a caribou or two. The shark literally eats everything, from fish, to squid, to porpoises.

Teeth of Greenland Shark

Even the flesh of the Greenland shark is poisonous to warm-blooded creatures (such as humans). This is because there is a enzyme that acts as an anti-freeze in the sharks blood to protect it from the extreme arctic waters that it lives in. Despite this, there are two warm-blooded predators that feed on Greenland sharks, Sperm Whales and Orca's (don't ask me how they handle the poisonous blood). Unless you count other Greenland sharks, then they only have these three predators.

The greenland shark is also the oldest living vertabrate in the world, with an estimated average lifespan of 200 years.They are also frequently found with a parasitic copepod attached to their eyes, making them effectively blind. It's thought that the copepod acts as a lure, tricking fish into coming close to the sharks head and within striking range of it's jaws.

7. Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni)

Sweet Jesus! What is that thing! I hear you scream. It's a goblin shark of course, which get's it's name from the nose-like protrusion and odd mouth giving it a goblin like appearance. The goblin shark is perhaps(no, is) the oddest looking shark alive today, continuing with it's ancestors legacy of being evolution's sandbox.

If hell exists, I guarantee it's populated entirely by Goblin sharks. Seriously though, i think they're awesome creatures!

6. Thresher Shark (Alopias vulpinus)

There are three different types of Thresher sharks in the world, and the biggest is the common thresher, measuring about 6 m (20 ft) long. The really cool thing about these sharks is their tail, which they use as a whip to stun prey. They most commonly eat schooling fish such as mackerel and bluefish.

The thresher shark is the jumping champion of the shark world, being able to launch themselves up to 6 m (20 ft) straight into the air!

5. Oceanic Whitetip (Carcharhinus longimanus)

The oceanic whitetip is the stereotypical "feeding frenzy" shark. Growing up to 4 m (13 ft) in length. The relatively large size and aggressive nature of the shark means that it dominates feeding frenzies when multiple species are taking part. Back in the days of pirates and privateers, these were the sharks that would feast on the men stranded in the ocean after having their ship destroyed. Jacques Cousteau regarded them as the most dangerous shark in the world.

Oceanic Whitetip Tooth

The shark's are opportunistic hunters, eating a large variety of food such as fish, birds, sea turtles, and mammals. Since they are open ocean sharks, they may go a while between meals. This means that when they do find something to eat, they tear into it with great enthusiasm, often going into feeding frenzy.

4. Great Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna mokarran)

The great hammerhead is the largest species of hammerhead sharks, growing up to 6.1m (20 ft) in length. Like most sharks, they eat most everything that crosses their path including porcupine fish, grey reef sharks (which are a 1.9 m (6.2 ft) shark), and their favorite prey being stingrays. Apparently the stingrays spines have no effect on the shark, and are frequently found lodged in an around the hammerhead's mouth.

Just what is the head shaped like that for? Well it's essentially used as a minesweeper... for stingrays! Sweeping it's head to side to side over the sand bed, the hammerhead can detect the stingrays electrical signal (present in all living things). Once the hammerhead finds its prey, it pins it to the sand bed using it's hammer, and pivots to take a bit out of the wing of the ray. Once the ray is incapacitated, the shark tears into its well deserved meal.

If you pause the video at 0:26 you can see that the hammerhead is chasing a lemon shark.

3. Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas)

Bull shark's are amazing for their ability to live in both salt and fresh water. They are fairly big shark that is very heavy set and bulky reaching 3.5 m (11 ft) long. They are extremely aggressive sharks, and their ability to live in fresh water means they are often in close proximity to humans, resulting in it being one of the four species of sharks responsible for the majority of attacks on humans.

They have been found to swim up the amazon river as far as 4,000 km (2,500 mi) up the amazon river, and has occasionally been seen as far up the Mississippi river as Alton. After the flooding in Queensland Australia of 2011, they could be seen swimming the streets of Goodna for several days.

2. Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier)

Tiger sharks eat everything, and I mean everything! They are the apex predator in their habitat, feeding on everything including fish, crustaceans, mollusks, dugongs, seabirds, sea snakes,marine mammals, and sea turtles and the largest individuals can grow to a whopping 7.5m (25 ft) in length, rivaling great whites in size. That being said, a length of 5 m (16 ft) is more common.

They're teeth are designed to slice through tough substances, and easily slices through flesh, bone, and even turtle shells. The teeth are shapes to act like a saw, with the shark shaking it's head back and forth to saw through the toughest materials. Like all sharks, these teeth are continually replaced. This ensures that the tiger sharks teeth never get to dull.

1. Great White (Carcharodon carcharias)

There's a good reason why the Great White is the stereotypical bad ass of the shark world. They are the biggest and strongest of all the sharks alive today. While they are apex predators, they are not monsters as portrayed in JAWS. The sharks can and do eat a wide variety of sea creatures, but they never intentionally seek out people to attack.

These impressive animals can grow to be 6.1 meters (20 feet) in length, although there are reports of larger sharks.

Great white shark teeth are shapes like serrated daggers. The bottom and top teeth interlock, effectively making the shark's mouth one giant pair of scissors! Rather than saw through their prey as the tiger sharks do, great whites tear away massive chunks of flesh and bone with each bite.

Other Huge, (but not exactly badass) sharks that deserve mentioning are the Whale Shark, Basking Shark, and Megamouth Shark, which are all peace loving filter feeders.

3 Unexpected Side Effects of Tim Hortens Roll Up the Rim to Win

Tim Horton's "Roll Up The Rim To Win" promotion for 2012 started yesterday, and again the coffee chain coffee sales will sky rocket as Canadians all over the country vie for prizes ranging from free coffee to a Toyota Camry and 3D TV. There are many other things that occur as a direct result of this competition however, some great, some not so great.

1. McDonalds gives away free or cheaper coffee.

This has to be one of the best side effects of Tim Horton's promotion. Depending on the year, McDonalds will give away free coffee during the Roll Up The Rim To Win contest of Tim Hortons. This is their way of saying up yours Tim Hortons! If we can't make money off people no one can! Unfortunatley for consumers this year don't get free coffee at McDonald's, but rather $1 off any coffee. This is still coinciding with Tim Horton's Roll Up the Rim though!

The real question is, does free(or in the case of this year, cheaper) coffee beat the chance to win a car or a TV? That's up to the customer to decide.

2. There are two different contests.

This isn't really a side effect, but it is something not many people know about. Tim Horton's runs another promotion along side Roll Up The Rim To Win called RRROLL UP ROULETTE. In the roulette contest, you are able to spin a roulette wheel once a day for the duration of Roll Up The Rim To Win contest. There is a $25 Tim gift card given out every day, and 4 weekly Panasonic 3D TV's.

Even if you don't win, you earn points every time you spin the roulette wheel. If you earn 1,000 points by the end of the contest, you are entered in a draw to win free coffee for a year!(In the form of six $100 Tim Horton's gift cards. O, and you get an extra spin on the roulette wheel to try once last time for a gift card or TV.

3. Massive increase in trash.

Every year starting in February Tim Horton's cups cover litter the country side. 285,951,200 cups were printed for the 2011 Roll Up the Rim contest. That's alot of paper going to waste.

The worst (and I was guilty of this) is when people who have travel mugs purposely leave them at home because they feel(rightfully so) that they should be getting a chance to win on the contest cups. Unfortunately, this adds many more wasted paper cups to the planet than would usually be consumed in a non-contest period.

I'm definitely doing the online contest this year, but I think I'll skip on the actual main contest. I did buy one obligatory cup today(I am Canadian after all), but I think that'll be the only one I buy this year. Last year, I kept a record of what I bought, how much I spent, and what I won. I wasn't to lucky, and honestly, this guy has done a better job at keeping track of his winnings.

Sex is amazing. Space is awesome. It makes sense that the two should be mixed together at every opportunity possible. Unfortunately there are alot of reasons doing the horizontal mumba in space won't be as awesome as mattress surfing is here on earth.

Reason #1: Lower Blood Pressure

"Here honey, wash that Viagra down with some cereal."

Perhaps the main reason sex in space would suck, is that it would hard to have sex at all! Being in space lowers your blood pressure and blood flow. Unless your planning on sticking to second base, or you want to be hopped up on Viagra for the whole mission, sex is going to be a challenge (for the guys at least). Even if you (or your man) does manage to get it up, it's likely to be smaller than it would be on earth.

Reason #2: The Sweat (And Other Fluids)

People tend to get sweaty when bumping uglies, and on earth that sweat tends to stick pretty close to our body.

Space however has no gravity, so sweat (which people do more of in space anyway) would be floating all around you in little droplets. Not to mention all the other liquids associated with sex that would no longer be confined by gravity to stay near your body. Unless you want all manor of sexual fluids bouncing throughout the space station(and your fellow astronauts), it would be best to wait until you got back down to earth.

Reason #3: Lack of Privacy

This one might not bother everybody, but for those of you who like to get their love making on in private, you would be hard pressed to find a moment alone on a space station, which only has the same internal volume as a Boeing 747. Forget having sex in anything else that currently exists, the space shuttle is basically a small office, and that's it.

Reason #4: It's Not Allowed

NASA does not allow sex on their flights, they don't even allow couples to go on the same mission. Have you ever worked with a dating couple in an office before? Whether it's incessant flirting, or constant bickering, it's going to annoy the rest of the crew. Not to mention if there was ever a break up. The two ex-lovers would be stuck in a small confined space for months on end before they're scheduled to come back down.

Reason #5: No Time

Being an Astronaut is alot of work! You have to do the mission that's assigned to you, plus take care of yourself, and that takes plenty of effort in space. I suppose this doesn't apply to space tourist, but there's very little time in an astronaut's day to be "fooling" around.

Reason #7: Birth Defects

There have been multiple studies done on birth defects in space. One of them studied the effect of zero G environment on mice embryos, and found that the little baby rats faced realy problems in developing properly. Aside from the zero G environment, there is much more radiation in space, resulting in even more mutation of the unborn child.

Reason #8: Motion Sickness

Astronauts often get motion sickness when in space, with 50 percent or so of Astronauts experiencing it. If you like being acrobatic when it comes to the the no pants dance, you might find yourself over the toilet if you try it in space.

Reason #9: Physically Difficult

Being in zero gravity would make the motions of having sex that much more difficult as well. In a zero G environment, it's difficult to even stay near your partner. You'd need some sort of straps to even keep the two of you near each other. On astronaut is quoted as saying "You actually have to struggle to connect and stay connected" in reference to her having difficulty even kissing her husband in a zero G simulation on earth.

A quote from another individual (Logan) at Nasa stated:

"It's a pretty messy environment, when you think about it," he said. "And for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. However ... I can well imagine how compelling, inspiring, and quite frankly stimulating choreographed sex in zero-G might be in the hands of a skilled and talented cinematographer with appropriate lighting and music."

So when you thrust... she/he would go flying across the room!

Despite all this, there are concept designs of what a space honeymoon would look like.
