Sekolah Menengah Setiabudi, Kuala Lumpur crowned DIY Made Simple 2025 Champion

Sekolah Menengah Setiabudi, Kuala Lumpur has been named the champion of the DIY Made Simple 2025 competition, an annual nationwide programme designed to foster innovation and sustainability among Malaysian students. The school’s four-member team impressed judges with its waste-to-energy project, Huzz Buzz — eco-tiles (ekojubin) that capture kinetic energy from footsteps to generate and store electricity, which can then be used to power small devices, improve school facilities, and promote greener practices.

Now in its ninth edition, the competition saw Sekolah Menengah Setiabudi, Kuala Lumpur triumph over 273 entries from 116 schools nationwide at a Grand Finale and Prize Giving event held in Kuala Lumpur today.

Organised by Yayasan MR D.I.Y., the philanthropic arm of Malaysia’s largest home improvement retailer MR D.I.Y. Group (M) Berhad, the DIY Made Simple competition is run in collaboration with Universiti Malaya’s Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) and the UM Faculty of Built Environment, with the support of the Ministry of Education’s Sports, Co-Curriculum, and Arts Division.

This year's theme, ‘Waste to Energy: Innovate for a Greener Future’, encouraged students to showcase practical solutions that transform solid waste into reusable energy sources, reducing costs while promoting sustainability. Examples include solar panels from e-waste, electricity generators using plastic waste, LED lights powered by bio-batteries, mini water turbines, batteries made from metal waste, and hydrogen production from wastewater.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Yayasan MR D.I.Y. Chief Executive Officer, Zaleha Mohd Mydin said, “DIY Made Simple is more than a competition - it is a platform that equips students with real-world skills and inspires young Malaysians to shape a sustainable future. For nine years, it has proven that education, creativity, and innovation go hand in hand. We are grateful to Universiti Malaya, the Ministry of Education, teachers, parents, and especially the students who bring these ideas to life.”

This Raya season, the Curve invites visitors to relive the nostalgia of 90s Raya celebrations with ‘Beraya di Kota Raya’. Running from 28 February to 6 April 2025, the campaign transforms the Centre Court into a vibrant retro bus terminal, celebrating the nostalgic charm of Raya in the city. A key highlight of the setup is the iconic pink minibus, a familiar sight in the Klang Valley and a beloved part of Malaysia’s transportation history. Complementing the nostalgic theme is a traditional Rumah Biru-inspired kampung house, reminiscent of the classic wooden homes of Kampung Baru, as well as old-school bus stops, ticket counters, and a 90s Raya setup that beautifully captures the charm of past celebrations.

Ayam Brand Continues its Commitment to a Healthier Malaysia with its 17th Annual Community Campaign

Ayam Brand, a 132-year-old household brand famed for the wide range of quality, no preservative, no added MSG, convenient and Halal certified canned food, is committed to continue its annual community care campaign, which was first introduced in 2008.

This year’s theme, #AyamBersamaMu Sihat & Cergas, aims to promote healthy living among children across Malaysia.

The campaign, in its 17th year, has benefited over 28,350 individuals from 635 NGOs, providing more than 2.2 million nutritious meals to them. This year’s campaign will focus on building good nutrition habits with Omega-3 for healthier children and making fitness a part of every child’s life for a fitter generation of Malaysians. In Klang Valley, the campaign will be benefitting 425 children from four NGOs by providing them 76,500 meals.

In partnership with dietetic experts from Columbia Asia, Focus Point Group, nutrition and fitness expert, Ayam Brand will be holding workshops related to the Malaysian Healthy Plate with emphasis on Suku-suku Separuh, fitness routines that the children can do at home and a fitness challenge to encourage the children to remain active, for the participating charity homes in Johor, Pulau Pinang, Sarawak, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

According to Ms Teoh Wei Ling, Head of Marketing at A. Clouet (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the brand strongly believes everyone deserves access to healthy food and the opportunity to lead a healthy life. “Through our annual community care program, we aim to empower individuals and communities to make positive changes to their health and well-being,”

Data from the Ministry of Health Malaysia 1 shows that the Omega-3 fatty acid intake of the average Malaysian is currently low. They suggest three ways to remedy this; namely eat more pulses like beans, tofu and fish; use cooking oil that is a blend of palm olein and Omega-3 rich vegetable oil; and include Omega-3 rich foods.

“Omega-3 is crucial for heart, brain, nerve, skin and eye health. We are providing our products with Omega-3, with the aim to provide one of the key nutrients for the children in this campaign. This year, we are integrating fitness into our campaign to maintain healthy lifestyles. Malaysia sees a rise in childhood stunting and obesity rates hence we would like to promote healthy living and fitness program into our campaign. Knowing our nation is still facing the challenge of obesity, let’s start somewhere to help address that,” adds Teoh.

Recently, reports 2 show that health literacy among Malaysians remain low. Malaysia has the highest number of diabetes and obesity cases in Southeast Asia.

Our Ministry of Health is alarmed that one in three3 school-going students are overweight or obese.

Combi Malaysia Champions Child Passenger Safety

According to a report by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), an agency under the Malaysian Ministry of Transport, children transported in private vehicles, such as cars, vans, and four-wheel drives, are among the most vulnerable on the road. The study highlights that 43.8% of casualties among children aged 1 to 4, and 30.2% among those aged 5 to 9, are from this group (Ahmad Y., Abu Kassim K.A., Md Isa M.H., Mustaffa S., Osman M.R., Ishak S.Z. Vehicle Crash Pulse Study for Child Restraint System (CRS) Evaluation. Research Report. Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS); Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia: 2018. Access via MRR No. 263.). With road safety a growing concern, these findings underscore the importance of child passenger protection in private vehicles.

In response to rising child fatalities in road accidents, the Ministry of Transport has amended the Road Transport Act 1978 - Motor Vehicles (Safety Seat-belts) (Amendment) Rules 2019. This mandates that children who weigh less than 36 kg, are shorter than 135 cm, or are under 10 years old, must use Child Restraint Systems (CRS) when traveling in cars. Eris Chew, representing Combi Malaysia, shared, “Although the Ministry is still evaluating mandatory child seat use, we strongly encourage parents to adopt Child Restraint Systems now. CRS has proven effective in reducing both injury severity and the risk of fatality for children during accidents.”

Chew also acknowledged the barriers Malaysian families face in adopting CRS, including perceived high costs and limited awareness. “At Combi Malaysia, we’re committed to bridging this gap by raising awareness and providing accessible, certified safety solutions that families can rely on.”
