A holiday can be the ultimate test of a relationship. It either becomes a cherished memory of togetherness or leaves behind misgivings and resentments. They say your personality on holiday can feel different from day-to-day life, even to a partner who has been with you for a long time. A new environment and new things to do can be very freeing, letting you be the person you’ve always wanted to be.

As long as money isn’t a point of contention. Many arguments brew and fester over money on vacations. Is the hotel in your budget or is one person overdoing it? Is the bill split fair for both partners? Do you feel one person gives up too much, and the other goes overboard with the luxury?

Let’s wave away that holiday grinch for good and allow romance to flourish.

Have the Money Conversation Ahead of Time

Since you cannot (or rather should not) avoid discussing money matters, do it well before time. Sit down and plan the essentials:

What kind of hotel works for both of you? Is a boutique hotel essential, or would you be okay going for a budget one to save money for activities?

What are the major sights/activities you wish to include? This is easier if it’s a focused destination, such as scuba diving in the Maldives or going up the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Metropolitan cities like Tokyo or Mumbai may offer multiple options based on your specific interests, from museums to gastronomic tours.

How much do you plan to spend on food and activities each day? Do you need a dedicated budget for shopping?

One way to arrive at a win-win situation is to ask each other: What is the one thing that is very important to you on this holiday?

This is a non-negotiable, unmissable part of the trip. For example, if one of you is really intent on getting a spa treatment in Bali, they shouldn’t have to give it up. But it may mean cutting corners at dinner.

Agree On a Travel Budget and Split

Once you know your priorities and expectations from the holiday, build a budget. This doesn’t have to be down to a specific number with two decimal points. But you should have an indicative range.

Another thing you must decide now is how you will split the expenses. This depends on whether you have a joint spending account or are paying for the trip individually.

Some couples like a 50:50 split, while others prefer a division proportionate to their incomes. Some keep shopping separate, which seems a good idea if clothes and local jewelry later become the source of an argument. A financial therapist shares on Investopedia that a joint bank account with money pooled for shared expenses can be a good idea.

“Money is still one of those things [that is] a very big source of potential conflict and frustration in a relationship. For both parties, it’s important to really have an honest conversation about what’s affordable.” – Kelly Reddy-Heffner, CFP, Certified Financial Therapist.

Either way, deciding the split before going on the holiday will ensure that both of you know what to expect and don’t get into squabbles.

Here’s an indicative plan you could use.

Category

Budget

Details

Split

Transportation

20%

Flights/train, taxis, local transport, fuel

50/50

Accommodation

25%

Hotels, resorts, stays

50/50

Food & Drinks

20%

Meals, snacks, drinks

50/50

Activities

15%

Tours, sightseeing, tickets, experiences

50/50

Shopping

10%

Clothes, souvenirs, gifts, personal shopping

Individual

Emergency / Unexpected

10%

Medical, cancellations, extra transport, unexpected costs

50/50

Don’t Let Unexpected Expenses Turn Things Sour

Disagreements about money on holiday can feel even worse when the expenses in question come as a shock. The best laid plans of mice and men can also go wrong at times, and you may end up spending on healthcare, local taxes you hadn’t considered, or even legal expenditure. In fact, it is best to factor these expenses at every stage, from booking to actual travel.

If you have a chronic health condition that keeps you from walking long distances, accounting for cabs will be essential. Sometimes, treatments may cause complications, affecting your health and travel plans. For example, mesh implants for incontinence are linked with pain and infection in many women. Some have filed a vaginal mesh lawsuit in response, which means you have both medical and legal expenses to account for.

Understandably, you need extra funds for managing your healthcare needs in these circumstances. Moreover, travel becomes more expensive when you require special amenities to ensure comfort. Naturally, these scenarios will affect your discretionary spending during travel.

Commit to Making Memories, Not Keeping Score

Picture this. A walk through a charming neighborhood in a small town, just the two of you talking nineteen to the dozen. A sunset you watch hand in hand, the evening slowly quietening down. Waking up in a new place together, the day full of possibilities.

Memories like these are likely unforgettable for most people; yet, they don’t directly cost anything. On holidays, it is worth focusing on collecting moments like these.

They also make excellent material for talking about long after the holiday is over. A 2024 research study in the International Journal of Tourism Research showed that reflecting on shared memories with travel companions can contribute to social connectedness and self-growth. It is much more positive than focusing only on paid products/experiences and keeping score of your spending.

Yes, this kind of “freedom” with money also requires a certain depth of pocket, but you have to allow that much. It is a holiday, after all, and you must remember that you have done the homework by budgeting in detail. Trust the process.

FAQs

Should couples split travel expenses 50/50?

Not necessarily. A 50/50 split can work when both partners have similar incomes and spending capacity. If one person earns considerably more, splitting costs according to income may feel more equitable. The key is agreeing on the approach before booking the trip.

What if one partner wants a more expensive holiday?

Talk about priorities before making reservations. If the upgrade or luxury experience matters more to one partner, you could agree that they cover the additional cost, while shared expenses remain divided according to your usual arrangement.

How can couples avoid arguing about money while traveling?

Agree on the budget, payment method, and spending limits before leaving. It’s also helpful to allow each person some discretionary money so small purchases don’t turn into repeated negotiations.

Adieu, Money Moans

Nothing sours moods more than money-related tiffs for couples on the go. This is the last thing you wish to deal with at a time you want to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Discussing potential issues before the trip and focusing on building authentic memories can help avoid arguments.

Croatian food can change the way you think about familiar ingredients. Along the Adriatic coast, cooks let fresh fish, olive oil, herbs, and seasonal vegetables speak for themselves, while inland traditions draw on hearty stews, smoked meats, and homemade pasta. You don’t need to master complicated techniques to appreciate the difference. Instead, you can start with one ingredient, one dish, or one cooking habit and see how it changes your everyday meals. As you explore these flavors, you also begin to understand how Croatia’s landscapes, climate, and local traditions shape what people put on their plates.

The Role of Local Ingredients in Croatian Cuisine

Local produce gives Croatian cooking its sense of place. Along the coast, you’ll often find seafood paired with garlic, parsley, lemon, and good olive oil. Inland, dishes tend to make greater use of potatoes, beans, cabbage, pork, and freshwater fish. The contrast shows you how geography can influence cooking without requiring elaborate recipes. Olive oil offers a useful starting point. Croatian cooks often use it to dress grilled vegetables or fish rather than hiding the ingredients beneath heavy sauces. Try finishing roasted zucchini with a drizzle of good olive oil, chopped parsley, and a little lemon. You’ll notice how a few carefully chosen ingredients can create a dish with much more character.

Ingredients That Will Change Your Culinary Perspective

Some Croatian ingredients can encourage you to rethink how you cook. Paški sir, a sheep’s cheese from Pag, develops a firm texture and savory flavor that works well grated over pasta or served with fruit. Istrian truffles can turn a simple plate of scrambled eggs or pasta into something more aromatic without requiring complicated preparation. You can also explore ajvar, a roasted red pepper spread popular across the Balkans, and use it with grilled chicken, sandwiches, or roasted potatoes. If you’re planning tours to Croatia that include food markets and local restaurants, tasting these ingredients where producers make and serve them can help you understand their flavors more clearly.

Bringing Croatian Flavors Home

You can recreate the spirit of Croatian cooking without trying to copy an entire regional menu. Start with a simple fish supper: grill a fillet, dress it with olive oil, garlic, parsley, and lemon, then serve it alongside potatoes or seasonal vegetables. This approach lets you taste each ingredient rather than overwhelming the dish with seasoning. For a more substantial meal, make a bean or vegetable stew and add smoked paprika, bay leaves, and fresh herbs. Cook it slowly so the vegetables soften and the flavors develop. Once you become comfortable with these combinations, you can adapt them to ingredients that you already buy regularly.

Expand Your Culinary World Travelling

Travel gives you the chance to experience Croatian food in the setting that shaped it. At a coastal market, you can see the fish available that morning and notice which vegetables local sellers consider seasonal. In a family-run restaurant, you may discover that a dish you know from a cookbook, it tastes quite different when a local cook prepares it from ingredients sourced nearby. Make a habit of asking what grows locally and which dishes people eat at home. Then take those ideas back to your own kitchen. You’ll return with more than recipes: you’ll have a better understanding of how place, season, and tradition can influence the way you cook.

Greece regularly ranks among the most-visited countries in Europe, totalling over 130 million visitor nights in 2025. The most popular areas, like honeymoon hotspot Santorini and party island Mykonos, are known for drawing crowds. But beyond these well-known beach destinations, another side of the country awaits. Dare to explore beyond the obvious, and you can find a peaceful and perhaps more meaningful experience in hidden corners of the Greek coast.

Why choose Greece?

There’s a reason people return to Greece year after year. In fact, there are several.

It has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean Basin and meets the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Aegean Sea to the east through its thousands of islands. Expect countless beaches, lapped by crystal-clear shallows and bold blue waves and backed by tavernas where you’re invited to slow down.

On top of this, you’ve got rich ancient heritage, explorable through extraordinary UNESCO sites like the Acropolis of Athens, and a vibrant modern-day culture grounded in hospitality, celebration and mouthwatering cuisine. Inland, lush countryside waits to be explored on foot or by bike. And the weather? Glorious from spring to autumn. What more could you ask for?

Why seek out hidden corners?

Popular destinations earn their reputation for a reason, but quieter locations often offer a more rewarding experience, especially if you’re travelling in the peak summer months when visitor numbers swell. When you step away from the crowds, you gain the space to enjoy surroundings in detail. You also create opportunities to discover untouched beaches and unknown viewpoints that don’t make an appearance in guidebooks.

Hidden corners often reveal a stronger connection to local life. In smaller coastal communities, fishermen still mend nets beside the harbour, and family-run tavernas shape their menus around the morning catch. Conversations feel less hurried, and you gain a better sense of everyday Greek culture.

Many travellers also appreciate the freedom that comes with staying in villas in the Greek islands away from tourist centres with their often-overcrowded hotels. A hillside property overlooking a secluded bay ensures peace and privacy and the freedom to live at your own pace in authentic Greek style.

How to find quiet spots

Research should start before you travel. Browse online to identify which Greek islands and coastal regions are lesser-visited and choose your destination from this curated list. Smaller islands such as Paxos, Folegandros, or Halki often receive far fewer visitors. Look beyond social media recommendations and explore regional tourism websites to find little-known and well-loved places to stay. These sites will also have useful local information like ferry maps.

Once you arrive, ask residents for recommendations of where to go during your stay. A hotel owner might suggest a beach hidden around the next headland, while a taverna owner may know the best coastal path for sunset views.

Travelling in late spring or early autumn can make a significant difference. You still enjoy warm weather, but you’ll escape the hordes of summer tourists. Even well-known beaches and restaurants will be quieter, and generally you can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

Finding different ways to explore will help you stumble upon your own discoveries. Hire a car to travel out to places unreachable by public transport or coach tours, or take a boat and sail to bays only accessible by water.

Enjoying the coastline

Finding different ways to enjoy the coastline will reveal the many layers of Greece’s hidden coastal gems. Watersports are an obvious and immensely enjoyable option. Snorkel close to shore, go sailing, glide between quiet coves in a kayak or on a paddleboard, or choose an adrenaline-inducing activity like jet-skiing.

Coastal walks offer another rewarding way to experience the landscape. On islands such as Kefalonia or Andros, footpaths connect villages and beaches with spectacular viewpoints, rewarding exercise with unforgettable scenery.

Feeling romantic? Plan private picnics and al fresco evening meals, or head to the beach at night and lie beneath the stars.

Enhancing your experience

Careful planning helps you make the most of Greece’s quieter coastal locations. Even in off-the-beaten-track locations, booking flights, accommodation and ferry tickets in advance gives you more choice, especially during school holidays.

Timing matters too. Early mornings often bring calm seas and peaceful beaches, while late afternoons can offer softer light and cooler temperatures for walking.

Leave room for flexibility in your itinerary. Some of the best coastal discoveries happen when you follow a recommendation from a resident or decide to stop at an unexpected village along the way.

Choose trusted providers for accommodation, transport and excursions to avoid unnecessary stress. With the practical details taken care of, you’ll have more time to enjoy what makes Greece so special: the simple pleasure of discovering a beautiful corner of the coast and feeling like you’ve found it for yourself.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://loveandroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Amsterdam-winter-6-1024x683.jpg" alt="Photo of a couple kissing in front of historical houses in Amsterdam.
Three weeks is the shortest stay in which dating in an unfamiliar city has a real chance of going anywhere. The number comes from how long two adults take to stop being strangers to each other, which the research measures in weeks and not in evenings. Every traveler is booking against that window without being told it exists, and six nights puts a person on a plane home before the earliest end of it.

The Hours Behind a Connection

Hall’s study, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, found that roughly 50 hours of time together moves two people from acquaintance to casual friend. Another 90 hours moves them to friend. More than 200 hours are needed before either would use the word close. Hours spent working alongside someone counted for much less than hours spent doing nothing in particular.

Hall was measuring friendship, and romantic attachment runs on a different curve. What transfers is the shape of the calendar rather than the hour count, because both processes need repeated meetings spread across weeks and neither one survives a single good evening followed by a departure. Four or five meetings of three hours each comes to 15 hours, a fraction of what an ordinary friendship takes, and a traveler needs enough days to stack even those without rushing them.

The Two Week Default

American international trips averaged 14 days between October 2024 and October 2025. That is shorter than the goal requires. Residents of the European Union spend an average of 7.8 nights on a foreign trip. Remote workers, who have the most freedom of anyone to stay put, averaged 6.4 weeks per stop in 2025, up from 5.7 weeks in 2024 and 5.4 the year before.

The direction of that last number tells the story. The people with the fewest constraints keep choosing longer stays, and they visited 6.2 places in 2025 against 7.2 in 2023. Fewer cities, more weeks in each. The same pattern shows up at the top of the market, where one operator serving affluent travelers recorded a 37% rise in average summer trip duration, from about a week to a little under two.

Cost pressure and visa paperwork explain some of that drift, and so does exhaustion. A person who has changed apartments eleven times in a year has spent a large share of the year on administration. The same logic applies to a two-week holiday split across three countries, where the traveler arrives home having met a great many people for 40 minutes each.

The Three Week Threshold

Three weeks changes what is possible on a practical level. A first meeting can happen in the first few days, a second can follow without looking desperate, and a third can be arranged around something the other person was already doing. That third meeting is the point at which the city has stopped being an obstacle, because by then the neighborhoods have names and the schedule is not a guess. Work on people who had recently moved cities suggests the turn from acquaintance into a friend usually happens somewhere between three and nine weeks after the first meeting, and rarely at all after three or four months.

The kind of trip matters here as much as the length. A trip organized around luxury travel and dating solves part of the problem by default, since one hotel booked for a month puts the same faces in the same lobby often enough for a second meeting to happen without either person arranging it. A backpacker moving between hostels every third night is renegotiating an address faster than anyone can plan around him.

Visa Math and Stay Length

The legal ceiling sets the outer limit in most of Europe. The Schengen rule allows 90 days inside any rolling 180-day window, counted across every member country together, with the entry and exit days included. The window moves forward daily, so the allowance is never a tidy block of three months. Since April 2026 the count is kept automatically by the Entry/Exit System, which records biometric arrivals and departures across all 29 countries and replaces the old passport stamp.

That ceiling makes the choice concrete. Ninety days can be one city for the whole period, three cities at a month each, or nine cities at 10 days each. Only the first two options leave enough time in any one place for a second and third meeting with the same person. The nine-city version produces a lot of photographs and no repeat visits to the same bar. Britain is outside that count and runs its own permission through the UK ETA, which is worth knowing for anyone planning to park a month in London against a European allowance they have already spent.

The Cost of Constant Movement

Roughly 47% of remote workers spend less than a week in a given city, and that week is mostly consumed by logistics. The first two days go to accommodation, transit routes, a working internet connection, and finding somewhere decent to eat. The last day goes to packing.

What remains is a narrow center. In a six-night stay that center is about three usable evenings, and at least one of them will be lost to fatigue or weather. Anyone running that pattern for a month has produced maybe nine viable evenings across four cities, split among four sets of strangers, none of whom will be seen twice.

City Size and Social Density

Stay length interacts with the city. A large capital has more people and worse logistics, so a 45-minute transit each way removes an hour from every meeting. A mid-sized city with a compact center gives back that hour, which means two weeks in a walkable town can produce more contact hours than three weeks in a sprawling one.

Density of the right kind matters more than raw population. A university town, a port city with a working nightlife, or a place with a large population of people from elsewhere all produce more approachable strangers per square mile than a commuter suburb of a much larger metro area.

Season is the other variable people forget. A coastal city in its off season has cheap accommodation and almost no social calendar, which is fine for a writer and useless for anyone hoping to meet people. The reverse problem happens in peak season, when the city is full of other visitors who are themselves leaving on Sunday.

A Workable Stay Length

The usable answer for most travelers is 21 to 30 days in one city, with any additional time going into that same city instead of a new one. Book accommodation in a central neighborhood for the whole stretch, keep the first three days for logistics, and plan on the second half of the stay carrying the meetings that matter. If the trip cannot be that long, treat the shorter version as a scouting trip and return to the city that worked, since a second visit starts from a base of familiarity that a first visit spends its entire length building.

There are few places in the world with as much breathtaking natural beauty as Iceland. This is a country unlike anywhere else on the planet, with dramatic landscapes, powerful waterfalls, volcanic terrain, gigantic glaciers, and geothermal lagoons. This natural beauty is best discovered at a slower pace, giving you the opportunity to appreciate each incredible sight along the way.

Chase Iceland’s Famous Waterfalls

Iceland boasts some of the most jaw-dropping waterfalls on earth. No trip here is complete without visiting some of the country’s most iconic cascades, from the thundering power of Gulfoss to the picturesque Seljalandsfoss. There are several famous and hidden gems to discover, each one offering a unique perspective on Iceland’s rugged natural beauty.

Explore the Country’s Volcanic Landscapes

Iceland’s fascinating volcanic history has shaped some of the most unusual and breathtaking natural scenery in the world. Here, you can discover unique black sand beaches, lava fields, and dramatic craters that create landscapes that almost feel otherworldly. This makes Iceland a brilliant place to explore for nature lovers, those interested in geology, and photographers.

Experience the Coastline from the Water

Many visitors focus on driving Iceland’s roads, particularly the famous Ring Road route. While this is certainly worthwhile, seeing the country from the sea offers a completely different perspective. An Iceland cruise allows you to discover the dramatic fjords, remote coastal communities and spectacular wildlife that can be hard to experience from land. These cruises offer visitors a unique travel opportunity that many people miss.

Relax in Geothermal Hot Springs

Another essential Icelandic experience is to enjoy a soak in the geothermal waters, allowing you to unwind and connect with the physical environment. Whether you choose one of the famous lagoons or discover a lesser-known natural pool, these warm waters provide a relaxing contrast to the often-cool Nordic climate.

Look for Wildlife in Its Natural Habitat

Due to its unique landscapes, Iceland is home to a wide range of impressive wildlife. Animal lovers will revel in the opportunity to spot puffins, whales, and all kinds of seabirds. Take the time to explore coastal areas, nature reserves, and offshore waters for memorable encounters with some of the country’s most iconic species.

Iceland is a country unlike any other and somewhere that the natural scenery takes centre stage. With its incredible waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, beautiful coastline, geothermal hot springs, and abundance of wildlife, this is a place that provides visitors with amazing experiences and the opportunity to connect with some of the most distinctive natural scenery in the world.

Summer road trips have a charm of their own. While the main destination is the goal, there’s plenty to enjoy on your way there. Sunny open roads, immersion in scenic routes, picnic breaks, and exploring unplanned locations are a few ways to enrich your experience.

However, once you hit the road, hot summer weather will put both your vehicle and tires to the test. The distance you need to cover, extra luggage you’ve brought, and crowded highways put extra strain on your gear, each in their own way.

Fortunately, summer tires excel on long journeys under hot sun and sudden showers. But just mounting these tires isn’t a solution; you still have to make sure they are in good condition. Preparation is what distinguishes a successful trip from a failed one.

Starting the Trip Without Checking Your Summer Tires

As summer tires bear the brunt of the journey, checking all four, including the spare, gives you peace of mind during the trip. While you may not need the spare for this adventure, it’s better to have it functional when you need it than to wait for help while stranded.

A quick tread inspection is all it takes to see potential issues your tires might have. Cuts, cracks, bulges, punctures, and uneven wear compromise tire performance in different ways, warranting immediate tire replacement.

While tires might look fine and new on the outside, internal degradation can begin long before any visible signs appear. Keeping an eye out for their condition and age prevents potential hurdles down the road.

Getting Tire Pressure Wrong

Maintaining optimal tire pressure can be challenging in summer heat, as it can cause pressure fluctuations. Departing from the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended values leads to weaker road grip, harder control of the vehicle, increased braking distance, higher fuel consumption, and uneven wear that shortens tire lifespan.

Driving with such tires to resorts, beaches, or national parks is dangerous and costly. Check the pressure when tires are cold to ensure accurate values. As heat and pressure compound over time on long-distance drives, longer journeys benefit the most from proper tire pressure. This ensures safe driving, particularly when you include extra pressure from heavily loaded vehicles.

Overloading the Car for the Journey

Packing all necessities makes you prepared for the journey. However, you can go overboard by bringing everything with you. It’s easy to give in to the prospect of enjoying different activities and just bring one more thing. But that’s exactly what can sabotage your trip.

Cars and tires can withstand a certain weight limit, including passengers and their luggage. If you’re an adventurous soul, water lover, or probably both, it’s hard to resist not bringing camping, sports equipment, and beach gear. However, it’s exactly that extra luggage on top of everything that pushes your vehicle and tires to the brink till they fail.

Following the manufacturer’s recommendation for the vehicle’s load limits helps you avoid such issues without compromising your enjoyment during the trip.

Assuming Summer Tires Make You Invincible

Summer tires let you get the most out of your gear and journey in warm conditions, but you still need to pay attention to the potential risks. Good tires are necessary for safety, performance, and comfort, but greater responsibility still lies with the driver.

Heavy showers can quickly replace sunny weather, making all the difference on the road. The design of summer tires helps prevent hydroplaning, but it requires slowing down to safely proceed with your journey.

Summer tires excel at high speed handling and aggressive cornering, but they’re only as effective as the driver behind the wheel. Winding roads can be tricky to navigate regardless of the tire quality, and road hazards are easier to miss at higher speeds.

Pay attention to heavy eyelids and drifting lanes while driving, as this doesn’t happen by chance. High temperatures, dehydration, and monotonous stretches of roads are the recipe for driver fatigue. Take regular breaks and refresh yourself before continuing your journey.

Forgetting the Rest of the Car

Overlooking to check the vehicle ahead of the trip and bring necessities becomes a problem at the worst time possible, when you’re already many miles away from help.

Forgetting to top off coolant or any other crucial liquid, like engine oil and windshield washer fluid, isn’t an issue till the vehicle stops or you can’t see the road properly. Checking their levels lets the vehicle function as expected, leaving you to enjoy the travel and safely reach your destination.

Once you hit the road, you can’t predict what conditions you’ll have to drive in. Heavy traffic, winding roads, and reduced visibility in rain and at night are all hurdles that can be avoided by checking brakes, battery, lights, windshield wipers, and other elements. Keeping the vehicle in order is what prevents unnecessary stress on trips.

Emergencies during the trip can happen, so it’s best to be prepared for them. Having a spare tire or a tire repair kit allows you to quickly proceed with your journey instead of waiting for assistance. In case you have to wait for it, emergency supplies come in handy till the issue is resolved and you’re ready to go.

Final Thoughts: Prepare Your Summer Tires, Then Enjoy the Journey

Creating a memorable journey isn’t hard to pull off. All it takes is good preparation before you start your adventure. Taking a vehicle to a mechanic and packing all necessities lets you avoid many problems down the road. Don’t forget a quick summer tire inspection. It can help you avoid headaches and stress.

Once everything is ready, what remains is to enjoy a smooth journey, different activities, and create new memories. The best way to enjoy the trip is to prevent problems before they even get a chance to sabotage your adventure.

Most travelers budget carefully. They compare flights, hunt for a cheaper hotel, and argue about whether the airport transfer is worth it. Then they land, pull out a debit card, and quietly hand over a chunk of that hard-won savings to their own bank.

The cost of spending abroad is rarely a single, visible charge. It’s a stack of small ones. A percentage here, a flat fee there, an exchange rate that’s slightly worse than the one you looked up that morning. Individually, none of them feel like much. Added together across a two-week trip, they become real money.

So we sat down and worked out the actual number. Here’s what a typical trip costs, where the charges come from, and what separates travelers who pay them from travelers who don’t.

What Actually Happens When You Tap Your Card Abroad

The mechanics matter, because the fees hide inside them.

When you pay in euros, yen, or pesos, the transaction travels through a card network — usually Visa or Mastercard. The network converts the amount using a wholesale rate that’s close to the mid-market rate you’d see on a currency site. That part is generally fair. Both networks publish their rates openly, and you can check them yourself using Visa’s exchange rate calculator or Mastercard’s currency converter.

Then your bank gets involved. And your bank is where the markup lives.

The Four Charges That Stack Up

1. The foreign transaction fee

This is the headline charge. Most banks add 1% to 3% to every purchase processed outside the country. Three percent is the common ceiling at large institutions, and many apply it to ATM withdrawals too — not just card swipes.

It doesn’t show up as a separate line item on your statement. It’s baked into the converted amount, which is exactly why so few people notice it.

2. ATM fees — and there are two of them

Pulling cash abroad usually triggers a double charge. Your own bank bills a flat international withdrawal fee, commonly $3 to $5 per transaction. Then the machine’s operator adds a surcharge of its own, which averages around $3.22 domestically and often runs higher at airports, train stations, and tourist strips overseas.

Take out cash four times in two weeks and you’ve paid two separate institutions eight times.

3. Dynamic currency conversion

This is the expensive one, and it’s the one you agree to yourself.

At the register or the ATM screen, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to be charged in your home currency instead of the local one. It sounds helpful. It is not. That option — dynamic currency conversion, or DCC — hands the exchange rate to the merchant’s payment processor rather than the card network.

The markup typically runs 3% to 7%, and investigations have documented cases stretching well past 10%. One European consumer study found prices rose between 2.6% and 12% every single time DCC was used.

Always choose the local currency. Always.

4. The exchange rate spread

Even without DCC, some banks apply their own conversion margin on top of the network rate. It’s small, often under 1%, and it’s almost never disclosed clearly. Consider it the tax you pay for not reading the fee schedule.

We Did the Math: A Two-Week Trip to Spain and Portugal

Here’s the scenario. One traveler, fourteen days, $2,400 in total card spending. Of that, $1,700 goes on card purchases — meals, museums, trains, a few souvenirs. The remaining $700 comes out of ATMs across four withdrawals, because cash is still king at markets and small cafés.

The traveler is using a standard debit card from a large national bank charging a 3% foreign transaction fee. On a handful of purchases — a hotel bill, a dinner, a rental deposit — they accepted the “pay in USD” prompt without thinking about it. Call it $600 worth.

Charge

How it’s calculated

Cost

Foreign transaction fee on purchases

3% of $1,700

$51

Foreign transaction fee on ATM withdrawals

3% of $700

$21

Bank’s international ATM fee

$5 × 4 withdrawals

$20

Local ATM operator surcharges

~$3.50 × 4 withdrawals

$14

Dynamic currency conversion

5% of $600

$30

Total

$136

That’s 5.7% of everything spent — gone, with nothing to show for it.

Put differently: $136 is two nice dinners, a day trip, or most of a domestic flight home. And the traveler who paid it never made a single decision they’d recognize as expensive.

Why Your Bank Account Matters More Than Your Packing List

Here’s the part that surprises people. Every charge in that table is optional. Not one of them is a law of physics or a cost the card networks impose. They’re policy choices made by individual banks, and banks differ enormously.

Run the same trip on an account that waives foreign transaction fees and reimburses ATM charges, and the $136 drops to somewhere between zero and about $14 — just the operator surcharges, if they aren’t refunded. The itinerary is identical. The spending is identical. The only variable is where the money is held.

This is where account structure does the heavy lifting. Branch networks are expensive to run, and those costs get passed along in the fee schedule. A well-chosen online bank account typically carries far less of that overhead, which is why no-fee international spending and ATM fee reimbursement show up so much more often in that corner of the market. Worth checking before you book anything: read your account’s fee disclosure and look specifically for the words foreign transaction, international ATM, and currency conversion. Ten minutes with that document is the highest-return travel prep you’ll do.

It also helps to know what your bank charges relative to others. Comparison tables for major institutions are easy to find, and the spread between the best and worst options is wider than most people assume.

Practical Ways to Cut the Cost

A few habits handle most of the damage:

Decline dynamic currency conversion every time. Local currency. No exceptions.

Withdraw larger amounts, less often. Flat fees don’t scale, so four withdrawals cost twice what two do.

Use bank-operated ATMs. Standalone machines in tourist areas and airports carry the highest surcharges and push DCC hardest.

Skip airport currency counters. Their spreads make even a bad debit card look reasonable.

Check whether your bank has partner ATMs abroad. Some waive fees within a global alliance.

Carry a backup card from a second institution, in case one gets flagged or frozen.

The Bottom Line

Overseas spending costs are not dramatic. That’s precisely why they work. They arrive as percentages you don’t see, flat fees you don’t question, and a screen prompt that sounds like a courtesy. Nobody feels robbed, and everyone comes home a little lighter than they should be.

The fix isn’t complicated, and it isn’t about traveling less comfortably. It’s about knowing what your account charges before you leave and switching if the answer is bad. That’s a one-time decision that pays out on every trip you take afterward.

Do the math on your own bank. You may find your card is the most expensive thing in your bag.

From Da Nang you can easily visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient imperial cities, mountains and beaches, all without changing hotels every couple of days.

It is an hour and a few minutes from Da Nang, and it’s one of Vietnam’s most unique towns. Also, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It has lovely narrow streets, centuries-old merchant houses, colourful lantern shops and cute cafes. It’s one of those places where you can easily spend hours wandering around without a plan.

But Hoi An is much more than its postcard-perfect Old Town.

The city’s history as an important trading port is reflected in its mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese architecture. Temples sit next to traditional wooden houses that have been converted into cafés and boutiques, and almost every street seems to lead back to the Thu Bon River.

Food is another reason many travelers fall in love with Hoi An. Try Hoi An’s mi quan, please!

From humble street food stalls to elegant riverside restaurants, the city is packed with excellent places to eat. Local dishes such as cao lau, white rose dumplings and Hoi An chicken rice are specialties you won’t want to miss.

Arrive in the morning to explore the quieter streets before the crowds arrive, it happens around 3 to 4 pm. Spend the afternoon browsing shops and cafés, then stay until sunset. As the lanterns begin to glow and small boats drift along the river, Hoi An becomes even more magical.

2. Da Nang to Ba Na Hills: touristy but worth visiting

Travel time: about 1 hour to the entrance, then you get a cable car to the mountain.

Love it or hate it, Ba Na Hills is one of the most talked-about attractions near Da Nang.

Most people visit it for the famous Golden Bridge, and you probably already saw it on social media. It’s the pedestrian bridge held up by two giant stone hands. It’s impressive, but there’s more to see at the mountaintop than the Instagram-famous beautiful viewpoint.

The journey begins with one of the world’s longest non-stop single track cable cars climbing above dense forests before reaching the summit. On a clear day, the views stretch all the way to the coastline.

Once you’re at the top, you’ll find landscaped gardens, temples, walking paths, viewpoints and an entertainment complex inspired by a European village. Keep in mind it’s designed as a fun escape rather than a cultural attraction, making it especially popular with families.

If you’re expecting an authentic Vietnamese cultural experience, Hoi An or Hue should be higher on your list.

However, if you want incredible mountain scenery, an unforgettable cable car ride and one of Vietnam’s most recognisable landmarks, a trip from Da Nang to Ba Na Hills is well worth a day.

Travel advice:

Go early! The earlier, the better. Tour buses start arriving mid-morning, meaning the Golden Bridge becomes increasingly crowded throughout the day. Arriving shortly after opening gives you the best chance to enjoy the views before the largest groups arrive.

How to get from Da Nang to Ba Na Hills:

Ba Na Hills is about 30 km from Da Nang, and the journey takes around an hour, depending on traffic.

The easiest and most popular way to get there is by shuttle bus. Many hotels can arrange it, but if you are like me and love to have everything organized, you can book it in advance, especially in peak season.

If you’re traveling with family or a group of friends, a private transfer is often worth the extra cost. It gives you the flexibility to leave when you want and return to Da Nang at your own pace.

You can compare shuttle services and private transfers here. It’s an easy way to see departure times and prices, then choose the earliest one possible.

The cable car ride

If you are short on time, you can combine Hoi An and Ba Na Hills in a one-day trip from Da Nang. Here is a day tour with good reviews that you can join.

3. Day trip to Hue: Vietnam’s imperial capital is amazing

Travel time: 2:30h by bus/van and 3 hours by train.

Hue is the longest day trip from Da Nang, but if you’re interested in Vietnam’s history, it’s one of the most rewarding. If it was a good experience for Anthony Bourdain, it will be for you. 😉

As the former capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, Hue was the country’s political and cultural heart for more than a century. Today, it’s best known for its impressive Imperial City, royal tombs and distinctive cuisine. Plus, it’s a completely different experience from Da Nang and Hoi An.

Hue’s main attraction is the Imperial City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by massive stone walls and a moat. Inspired by Beijing’s Forbidden City, the complex once housed emperors, royal families and government officials. It’s beautiful to see, and you can spend hours wandering its gardens and buildings.

If you have time, head beyond the citadel to visit one of Hue’s royal tombs. The Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh is impressive and a place you want to see.

Leaving Da Nang early gives you enough time to explore the Imperial City, enjoy lunch and visit one or two royal tombs before heading back.

And no visit to Hue is complete without trying bun bo Hue, the city’s famous spicy beef noodle soup. Rich, fragrant and packed with flavour, it’s one of Vietnam’s best regional dishes. To be honest, I didn’t like it that much, but Rob loved it.

Getting from Da Nang to Hue

One of the best things about this journey is that the route is almost as memorable as the destination.

The road between Da Nang and Hue crosses the spectacular Hai Van Pass, famous for its dramatic coastal scenery. If you’re traveling by train, you’ll enjoy equally impressive views as the railway runs through the coastline.

You can choose between trains, buses and private transfers here.

My Son is compact enough to explore in a few hours. It’s an easy visit that combines history, archaeology and beautiful scenery.

Walking through the site, you’ll notice intricate carvings, Hindu influences and temples slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding forest. Stunning!

Located just a few kilometres from Da Nang city centre, this peninsula feels surprisingly remote. Instead of busy streets and beachfront cafés, you’ll find winding coastal roads, lush rainforest, hidden beaches and spectacular viewpoints overlooking Da Nang.

The peninsula’s best-known attraction is Linh Ung Pagoda, where the towering 67-metre Lady Buddha watches over the coastline. The temple is beautiful, as are its gardens and views. Don’t forget to dress appropriately to visit the temple. You must cover your shoulders and knees.

Beyond the temple, the roads continue through the forest, leading to panoramic viewpoints and quiet stretches of coast that many visitors never discover.

Stop at a viewpoint, enjoy a Vietnamese coffee overlooking the sea or spend a couple of hours relaxing on one of the peninsula’s quieter beaches.

Which Da Nang day trip is better for you?

One of the best things about staying in Da Nang is that you can have many different experiences in a couple of hours.

If it’s your first time in Central Vietnam, Hoi An is the one destination we wouldn’t miss. Its historic streets, exceptional food, and a unique atmosphere make it the perfect introduction to the region.

Traveling with kids or looking for spectacular mountain views? Spend a day at Ba Na Hills.

Interested in Vietnam’s royal history? Hue is worth the longer journey.

Prefer ancient ruins without the crowds? Choose My Son Sanctuary.

And if you’re craving fresh air, coastal scenery and a slower pace, Son Tra Peninsula is the easiest escape from the city and a lovely motorbike ride.

The good news is that you don’t have to choose just one. Da Nang’s central location makes it easy to combine several of these destinations over a few days. While there we managed to create an itinerary that balanced history, culture, nature and adventure.

Talking about itinerary, you can use 12GO app in ChatGPT to plan your trip and transportation at the same time.

Wherever you decide to go, these day trips prove that Da Nang is much more than a beach destination, and I would go back in a blink of an eye.

Enjoy Da Nang and its surroundings!

Airport security is one of those travel steps that can shape the whole mood of a trip. When the line is moving, your bag is organized, and your documents are easy to reach, the airport feels manageable.

When you are unsure what to remove, where to stand, or why your boarding pass does not show the right status, even a short flight can feel stressful. That is why many U.S. travelers look into TSA PreCheck before they start flying more often.

For first-time travelers, the goal is not just to “get through faster.” It is to understand how airport screening works, what habits actually save time, and how to avoid the common little mistakes that slow people down. Whether you are leaving for a weekend city break, a long-haul vacation, or your first international trip, a smoother airport routine starts before you reach the terminal.

Start With the Type of Traveler You Are

Not every traveler needs the same airport strategy. Someone who flies once every few years may only need a better packing system and an earlier arrival time. A traveler who flies several times a year, especially from busy U.S. airports, may benefit more from an expedited screening program.

The key is to think honestly about your travel pattern. Do you usually fly from large airports during school holidays or peak morning hours? Do you travel with a laptop, camera gear, family members, or carry-on-only bags? Are you the kind of person who gets nervous at checkpoints? If the answer is yes, preparing for security in advance can make a real difference.

Travel publications often explain TSA PreCheck as part of a wider airport routine, not as a magic shortcut. The Points Guy’s guide to getting through TSA security lines smoothly highlights practical habits like preparing bags well, checking airport information, and understanding what the expedited lane does and does not change.

Know What TSA PreCheck Changes at the Airport

TSA PreCheck is designed for eligible, pre-screened travelers departing from participating U.S. airports. When it appears on your boarding pass, you may be directed to a dedicated screening lane where the process is generally simpler than standard security.

In many cases, travelers using the lane do not have to remove shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops, or travel-size liquids from their bags. That can be especially helpful if you are carrying electronics, traveling with a tight connection, or simply trying to avoid repacking your bag in a crowded bin area.

Still, it is important to understand that airport security can vary by airport, staffing, equipment, and travel volume. You should not arrive late just because you expect an easier line. Think of expedited screening as a helpful buffer, not permission to rush.

Add Your Known Traveler Number Carefully

One of the most common frustrations happens before the traveler even reaches the airport: the TSA PreCheck indicator does not appear on the boarding pass.

This can happen when a Known Traveler Number is missing from the reservation, entered incorrectly, or not saved in the airline profile. It may also happen if the name on the booking does not match the traveler information connected to the number. Small differences, such as a missing middle name or reversed surname, can sometimes create issues.

Before every trip, check your airline reservation and profile. Confirm that your name, date of birth, and traveler number are correct. Then check your boarding pass after online check-in. If the TSA PreCheck marking is missing, contact the airline before arriving at the airport when possible.

Pack Like Someone Who Respects the Line

Even with expedited screening, your packing habits matter. A messy carry-on can still create delays if an item needs extra inspection. The best airport bags are not necessarily the smallest; they are the easiest to understand.

Place electronics, chargers, medication, documents, and liquids in predictable locations. Avoid stuffing loose items into random outer pockets. Keep snacks, powders, and dense objects grouped neatly so they do not look confusing during screening.

AFAR’s article on how to get through airport security quickly makes the same broader point: smoother screening is often about preparation, not just the lane you choose.

Keep Your Personal Item Simple

Your personal item should hold the things you need before boarding: ID, wallet, phone, charger, medication, glasses, headphones, and any printed travel details. Avoid treating it like a junk drawer. If you have to search through receipts, tangled cables, and loose coins at the checkpoint, you will feel rushed.

Empty Pockets Before the Line

Do this before you reach the bins. Put coins, keys, watch, wallet, and other small metal items into your bag. This lowers the chance of forgetting something in a tray and helps you move with less stress.

Dress for the Checkpoint

Comfortable airport clothing helps. Avoid complicated shoes, heavy jewelry, and layered accessories if you do not need them. Even if you expect to use an expedited lane, security officers may still ask for additional screening in some situations.

Compare Airport Programs Before You Commit

Travelers often hear about TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and CLEAR in the same conversation. They are not identical. TSA PreCheck focuses on the security screening process for departures. Global Entry is more relevant for travelers returning to the U.S. from abroad. CLEAR is a private identity verification service used at select airports and venues.

For travelers who mostly fly within the United States, TSA PreCheck may be the most relevant starting point. For frequent international travelers, comparing programs can be worthwhile before paying any fee. NerdWallet’s comparison of TSA PreCheck vs. Global Entry is useful for understanding the difference from a traveler’s planning perspective.

The right choice depends on your habits. A digital nomad, a family visiting relatives abroad, a business traveler, and a once-a-year vacationer may all make different decisions.

Think Beyond the Security Lane

A smooth airport day is not only about security. It starts with how you plan your route to the airport, how you organize your devices, and how you handle downtime. Love and Road’s guide to traveling with a tablet on a plane is a good reminder that electronics can be useful for maps, bookings, entertainment, work, and travel research, but they should be packed with security and accessibility in mind.

If you travel with multiple devices, keep chargers and power banks together. Download boarding passes, hotel details, maps, and entertainment before leaving home. Airport Wi-Fi can be slow, and roaming may not work immediately when traveling internationally.

Give Yourself a Calm Margin

Even experienced travelers can run into surprises: traffic, parking delays, long bag-drop lines, terminal changes, weather disruptions, or extra screening. First-time travelers should build in more time than they think they need.

Arriving early does not mean wasting time. It means you can check signs, use the restroom, refill a water bottle after security, buy snacks, and find the gate without feeling like every minute is a crisis. A calm traveler makes better decisions, notices instructions faster, and is less likely to misplace important items.

The winter isn’t often thought of as the best time to travel in Europe. We tend to prefer our holidays summery and sunny, whether basking on a Mediterranean beach somewhere or bedding in to a rich cultural city centre on the Iberian peninsula. But you’re missing a trick not travelling in the wintertime; in winter, Europe transforms into an adventure playground, from snowy peaks to frozen lakes… a winter wonderland of a mainland, all begging to be explored!

Indeed, winter is the ideal time to go hunting for an adventure holiday experience. Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or simply want a more active kind of getaway, what follow are some of the most unforgettable winter experiences available in Europe.

Ski Holidays in France

France is more than its vineyards and Riviera getaways. It’s a gateway to mountain wonderment, from the edifying Alps to the stunning Pyrenees. This is a Mecca for winter adventure sports; when it comes to ski holidays, France is the be-all and end-all.

Wherever you deign to lay your skiing beanie, you’ll find a welcoming environment for adventure holiday-folk of all types, from beginners to experts. Ski resorts are wonderful environments for meeting like-minded sporting travellers, and great places to unwind after a day on the slopes.

Snowshoeing in Switzerland

The Alps stretch far beyond the confines of the French borders, of course, and beyond those borders, the range opens up to views you’d never believe. Such views are best experienced slowly, as opposed to at the great speeds you can expect when bombing down slopes on a pair of planks. The Swiss Alps are particularly beautiful and enjoyed all the more as part of a snowshoe hike across unspoiled mountain paths.

Winter Hiking in Austria

Similar glory can be found in Austria, too, albeit with a little less of an uphill struggle. Austria also receives the Alps, but is also home to a warmer climate and some of the most stunning forest landscapes in Europe. Such forests are a joy to explore on foot, using scenic trails with panoramic mountain views that simply must be seen to be believed. Try Lammerklamm gorge for one of the more unforgettable trails you’ll ever come across.

Ice Climbing in Norway

Finally, and perhaps most edifyingly of all, there’s Norway and the incomparable thrill of ice climbing. Outdoor climbing of any kind is already an adventure sport for the ages, but ice climbing adds a new dimension. In places like Rjukan, it’s actually possible for you to scale frozen waterfalls!

Winter has a particular magic when shared. Whether the draw is mountain air, dramatic Arctic skies, or ancient thermal waters, the colder months offer couples a depth of experience that summer holidays rarely match.

Skiing in the French Alps

Few winter experiences rival the Alps for sheer exhilaration. The combination of fresh mountain air, long descents, and cosy evenings by the fire creates a natural rhythm that suits couples perfectly. Planning a Val Thorens ski holiday puts you in one of Europe’s highest and most snow-sure resorts, with access to the vast Three Valleys area and a lively village atmosphere to enjoy long after the lifts close. It is reliably excellent for intermediates and experts alike.

Northern Lights in Tromsø

There are few more romantic sights than the aurora borealis rippling across a dark Arctic sky. Tromsø, above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, is one of the world’s premier Northern Lights destinations, sitting directly beneath the auroral oval. As Space.com’s 2026 guide to the Northern Lights explains, the years immediately following a solar maximum often deliver some of the most dramatic aurora displays of an entire cycle, making conditions currently exceptional for chasers. Add dog sledding, whale watching, and a cosmopolitan city to explore by day, and Tromsø makes a compelling case.

The original Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Swedish Lapland, has been reimagined by a different team of international artists every year since 1990. Couples spend the night in sculpted ice suites unlike any hotel room on earth, sleeping beneath reindeer hides in sub-zero temperatures before retreating to a warm log cabin for breakfast. The experience sounds extreme but feels surprisingly intimate. No two stays are ever the same, and the surrounding Lapland wilderness offers dog sledding and snowmobile excursions during daylight hours.

Snowy City Breaks in Prague

Prague in winter is transformed. The summer crowds thin out, prices drop, and the city’s baroque rooftops and mediaeval cobblestones take on a fairytale quality under snow. December brings Christmas markets to the Old Town Square, and the city’s excellent café culture provides a warm backdrop to long afternoons of wandering. For couples who prefer cobblestones to ski runs, Prague offers beauty, history, and atmosphere in equal measure and remains one of Europe’s most underrated winter city breaks.

Winter, explored together, creates the kind of memories that stay long after the season ends. These five destinations are very different, but each delivers something genuinely unforgettable.

There’s something about the moment the sky turns gold over open water that makes time feel like it slows down. For couples planning a proposal, a quiet stretch of shoreline at sunset offers a setting that’s intimate, unscripted, and entirely free of distractions. Add in the elegance of solitaire engagement rings, and you’ve got a moment that’s simple, emotional, and built to be remembered.

Hidden Coves for Private Moments

Not every beach proposal needs a dramatic backdrop or a far-flung location; sometimes the most memorable moments happen on a small, uncrowded stretch of sand just a short drive away. According to a recent roundup of the country’s most secluded beaches, destinations like Cannon Beach in Oregon and Polihale Beach in Kauai offer the kind of privacy and beautiful scenery that turns a simple walk on the sand into something unforgettable. Scouting a quieter cove ahead of time, ideally during off-peak hours, helps ensure the moment stays just between the two of you.

Golden Hour Photography Tips

Timing matters almost as much as location. The Knot’s guide to golden hour photography notes that the low angle of the sun during this window softens shadows and illuminates faces evenly, which is exactly why photographers favor it for proposals and engagement shoots alike. Arriving a little early gives you breathing room to settle in before the light shifts, and positioning yourselves with the sun slightly behind you can add a soft, glowing effect to every shot.

Romantic Beach Picnic Setups

A simple picnic adds warmth to any beach proposal without requiring elaborate planning. A blanket, a chilled bottle of champagne, and a few lanterns staked into the sand go a long way toward setting a relaxed, romantic tone. Keeping the setup lightweight and easy to anchor against the wind means less time fussing with details and more time focused on each other.

Tropical Islands With Quiet Shores

For couples drawn to a bigger getaway, a tropical island with a remote, less-trafficked shoreline can turn a proposal into the start of a full celebration. The appeal here is space, plenty of it, along with the kind of privacy that’s harder to find on more popular coastlines.

How to Personalize Your Proposal

The smallest details often end up mattering the most. A song that means something to you both, a meaningful date, or a location tied to your story together can change a beautiful setting into one that’s unmistakably yours. The goal isn’t to recreate someone else’s perfect proposal; it’s to build a moment that actually reflects your relationship.

A sunset beach proposal doesn’t need to be elaborate to be unforgettable. With the right spot, the right light, and a few thoughtful touches, you can create a moment that feels entirely your own, one that’s simple on the surface but deeply meaningful underneath, and that you’ll both be telling the story of for years to come.

Cozumel

Situated just off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel is a world-class drift-diving destination famous for its crystal-clear visibility, which frequently exceeds 100 feet. The

Cozumel is protected by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, meaning divers can effortlessly glide along dramatic drop-offs and vertical coral walls covered in giant sea fans. The currents keep the water nutrient-rich, attracting loggerhead turtles, eagle rays, green moray eels, and endless schools of neon-bright tropical fish.

Isla Mujeres

For snorkellers seeking a gentler, shallower adventure, Isla Mujeres offers pristine, calm turquoise waters and shallow sandbanks. The island is particularly legendary for its seasonal visitors.

Between June and September each year, hundreds of massive whale sharks gather to feed on plankton. If you get your holiday timing right, you can snorkel alongside these gentle, 40-foot giants. Because the water is highly protected, it’s an accessible, family-friendly option that delivers big-ticket wildlife encounters without the need for heavy scuba gear.

The Sea of Cortez

Separating the Baja California Peninsula from mainland Mexico, the Sea of Cortez is a wild, deep-water playground that legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau famously dubbed “the world’s aquarium.”

This unique body of water is a haven for pelagic life. Divers here can jump into the water alongside playful colonies of California sea lions and schooling hammerhead sharks. It’s a raw, dynamic marine environment where the desert meets a deep oceanic trench, creating unparalleled nutrient upwellings.

Riviera Maya Cenotes

Moving inland, the Riviera Maya offers an ethereal, otherworldly freshwater diving experience unlike anywhere else on Earth. The region’s limestone bedrock is honeycombed with thousands of cenotes: collapsed sinkholes that open up into massive, flooded underground cave networks.

The water in these caves is filtered through layers of limestone for centuries, making it so extraordinarily pure that divers feel as though they are floating through thin air rather than swimming.

As the midday sun strikes the openings of the cenotes, laser-like beams of light pierce the darkness, illuminating ancient stalactites and creating a hauntingly beautiful, gothic underwater landscape.

If you’re planning a trip to Thailand and looking to stretch your budget or make smarter choices without missing out on local culture, you’ve likely thought about doing a free walking tour in Bangkok. But what is a free walking tour, and is it actually “free”? And are there any good free walking tours in Bangkok?

After doing a free walking tour in Bangkok, more specifically the Bangrak Art & Cultural Walk, I can say this: it was one of the most interesting and relaxed ways I’ve experienced the city, and it is completely free.

So let me explain everything to you from the basics.

What is a Free Walking Tour?

At its core, a free walking tour is a “pay-what-you-want” guided experience. Unlike traditional tours, where you pay a flat fee upfront, these tours allow you to book your spot for $0.

Check out the best way to travel around Thailand here!

Most companies require an online reservation, so the guide knows how many people to expect. You show up at a designated meeting point and look for the guide, who usually is holding a colorful umbrella or wearing a specific branded t-shirt.

In places like Europe, you tip the guide at the end of the tour. The Bangkok free walking tour I did with TAG Thai/ TakeMeTour has a different approach, and I like it a lot.

How does a Free Walking Tour in Bangkok work?

The big difference with the Bangkok walking tour I did is that the guide is paid by a sponsor company. That means the tour is genuinely free for travelers, not dependent on tips to exist.

You can tip if you want, but there’s no pressure. And honestly, that takes away a lot of the awkwardness some people feel at the end of free tours.

From the start, the vibe felt relaxed. No sales pitch. No pushing. Just walking, listening, asking questions, and discovering parts of Bangkok that I probably would have walked right past on my own.

My experience on a Free Walking Tour in Bangrak, Bangkok

I did this tour on my own. Natalie was feeling unwell, so I joined the guide at BTS Saphan Taksin, and we started our morning walk at 10 am. But she did a Free Walking Tour in Chinatown Bangkok, and you can read her review here.

Bangrak is one of those neighborhoods you’ve probably passed through by taxi, BTS, or boat without really stopping to look. It sits along the Chao Phraya River and has layers of history that aren’t immediately obvious.

That contrast alone already made the experience worth it.

Also read: Is Bangkok safe to visit? Our tips after traveling and living here.

Discovering Bangkok’s “secret” side in Bangrak

Our tour wasn’t just a history lecture; it was a sensory deep dive. We started with a scenic boat ride along the Chao Phraya River, getting a riverfront view of the skyline.

The itinerary: from Art Deco to ancient alleys

Here is what we explore in Bangrak ares:

Alleys & Walls – covered with street art

Warehouse 30: a creative hub that feels like a hidden Brooklyn in the heart of Thailand, filled with local art, design, and cafés.

The Grand Postal Building: I never expected to find a massive Art Deco landmark in Bangkok, but its striking architecture is a photographer’s dream.

A Tale of Two Religions: we passed by the Haroon Mosque, home to one of the city’s oldest Muslim communities, followed by the elegant Assumption Church.

A peaceful Thai temple hidden away in the old town that felt worlds away from the city’s traffic.

I found Bangrak a great area for a walking tour.

Bangrak is ideal for a Bangkok walking tour because the distances are manageable and the area is flat. So it was easy to walk and enjoy even on a sunny day (I did this tour in January, on a Sunday morning).

Bangkrak has a good mix of old and new and it’s well connected by BTS (the skytrain) and by boat. So it doesn’t matter where you are staying, it will probably be easy to get here for the free walking tour.

More importantly, it tells a story. Bangrak is not frozen in time. It’s constantly changing, and I could see it. Walking through it helps you understand how Bangkok evolved into the city it is today.

Bangkok is hot. Even in the cooler months, walking for two hours means you’ll sweat. Wear light, breathable clothes and comfortable walking shoes. Hats and sunglasses are a good help as well.

Hydrate before and during the tour

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Grab water at a 7-Eleven before the meeting point. You’ll enjoy the walk much more.

The tour is in English. The guide may have an accent, and English might not be your first language either, that was my case. Ask questions, clarify when needed, and you’ll be fine.

The Verdict: Is a Free Walking Tour Worth It?

Absolutely! Exploring Bangrak taught me more about Bangkok’s “melting pot” history than any guidebook ever could. Ken knows a lot about the area, from history to fun facts.

It’s low risk, high reward, and the best way to get your bearings in a new city.

How to book the Bangrak Art & Cultural Free Walking Tour?

Booking is simple:

Reserve your spot online in advance on this website.

Show up at the meeting point on time.

Bring water, curiosity, and comfortable shoes.

The free walking tours are popular and there is a limit of travelers that can join them, so booking ahead is a good idea.

Even after visiting Bangkok many times (I lost count) and living here for almost a year, I still find new corners that surprise me. That’s exactly what happened when my husband Rob and I joined a free walking tour in Bangkok, focused on the Chinatown and Talad Noi areas.

I’ve always believed that free walking tours are the best way to understand a city, and usually it’s our first activity when arriving at a new destination. I believe that a walking tour gives you a good first perspective of the city, so later you can choose the attractions you want to visit and see the destination with more context.

We had never done a free walking tour in Bangkok before, simply because it didn’t exist or, at least, I had never heard about it. Now there are not only one, but two free walking tours in Bangkok. I did one of them, and Rob did both.

I’m sharing in this article my honest opinion, what we saw, how the tour works, and why I think it’s worth adding to your Bangkok itinerary, whether it’s your first visit or not.

This review is about the Bangkok Chinatown and Talat Noi walking tour. If you want to read Rob’s opinion on the other Bangkok free walking tour he did, click here to discover the Bangkok Bangrak Free Walking Tour.

So, let’s get started.

Why did we choose this free walking tour?

Bangkok can feel intense. Big avenues, traffic, noise, heat. I love it! But many people end up seeing only the classic highlights: temples, malls, rooftop bars. All great, and you should definitely do them, but there is so much more. Trust me!

BTW, here is our guide to your first time in Bangkok in case you are planning a trip here.

A free walking tour of Bangkok is a great way to experience a different side of the city, especially when you walk with someone who actually lives here. You pass through neighborhoods, small streets, local markets, and areas where people live and work every day.

The tour we did was organized by TakeMeTour. I’ve already done a couple of tours with them. I wrote about my incredible trip to Chiang Rai, our amazing day trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, and we even shared a video of our Bangkok Chinatown food tour.

Knowing TakeMeTour, we decided to give this TAGTHAi Free Walking Tour Bangkok Chinatown Hidden Alleys & Talat Noi a go.

I chose this tour because it focuses on two very interesting areas: Bangkok Chinatown and the Talad Noi neighborhood. Both places are rich in history and culture.

FYI: You may hear both Talad Noi and Talat Noi, they are the same place.

Day and time of our Bangkok Free Walking Tour

We did the tour on a Sunday afternoon in January. It was just Rob and me. Our guide said that groups are usually small, but that day only Rob and I showed up. And honestly, I felt very lucky.

Wanna know how to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? Check it out here!

The tour lasted about two hours, which I think is perfect in Bangkok’s heat. Long enough to learn and explore, but not exhausting. It started at 4:00 pm, which was also great to avoid the early afternoon heat.

Meeting our guide and why local background matters

Our guide was Ken, and one thing that really stood out was that his family has Chinese roots. This made a huge difference, as he has a deep understanding of the area and its history.

We talked a lot during the walk, and he was very curious about Brazil. Our conversation went far beyond a traditional tour, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

What he explained that stuck with me:

how traditions are kept alive,

how religion, business, and daily life mix in these neighborhoods,

and how Buddhism differs between Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese communities.

I’ve been traveling to and living in Thailand for years; my first time in Bangkok was back in 2014, and even so, I still learned new things with Ken.

When people think of Bangkok Chinatown, they usually imagine neon signs, busy streets, and endless street food. And yes, it is all that, but it’s also much more.

This Chinatown walking tour in Bangkok takes you through smaller streets and alleys, where people live, pray, and work. It felt more real and less touristy.

We also came across many cats along the way, and if you’re a cat lover like me, you know how that instantly makes the experience even better. Puuurfect!

Talad Noi: trendy, creative and worth seeing

One of my favorite parts of the tour was Talad Noi.

Even though I lived in Bangkok before, I hadn’t really explored Talat Noi after it became so popular for its street art, creative spaces, and cafés. Rob used to run around this area years ago, and he was surprised by how much more charming and touristic it has become.

Walking here with a guide helped me understand the area better. Yes, it’s trendy now, but it’s still a living neighborhood with an interesting history behind its name and location (ask Ken about it!).

Many travel influencers say that Talad Noi is the coolest neighborhood in Bangkok, and yes, it might be. Check on Instagram and TikTok, and you’ll see Talad Noi street art, colorful murals, old houses, and narrow streets full of character and cute cafes.

Talad Noi feels charming without trying too hard. It’s a place where you want to walk slowly, take your time, and take as many photos as possible. Just keep in mind that more and more tourists are visiting, so it can get busy.

Communication during our Bangkok free walking tour

The tour is done in English. Ken speaks English well, but he does have a strong Thai accent. Sometimes it was a bit hard to understand everything, but that’s real life, and it was never a big problem.

English is not my native language either, so I simply asked him to repeat or explain things again. We understood each other in the end.

If you’re worried about your English level, don’t be. This free walking tour in Bangkok is about connection, not perfection.

I’ve done many walking tours before, mostly in Europe, and I’ve never done one that was truly free like this one.

The meeting point for this Chinatown and Talad Noi walking tour was at MRT Hua Lamphong, Exit 3, connected to the Hua Lamphong train station (which is also worth a visit).

Our guide sent us a message the day before confirming the meeting point, so if there are any changes, you’ll be informed.

Duration and pace

The tour lasted about two hours of continuous walking. We did sit briefly in a temple, where Ken explained traditions and showed us how to pray in a Chinese temple. But that was it, so be prepared to walk.

The pace was easy, and the ground was flat.

Perfect timing:

The tour ends right before dinner

The tour ended around 6 pm on Chinatown’s main road, just when the area came alive for the evening. Restaurants open, street food stalls appear, and the atmosphere changes completely.

This is ideal. You’re already there, hungry, and surrounded by food.

Restaurant tips and crab noodles

We received at the end of the tour a link with restaurant recommendations in Chinatown, which I loved. Even as a seasoned traveler in Thailand, choosing where to eat in Chinatown can be overwhelming.

We followed the tour recommendation and ended up in an amazing restaurant. I thought twice about sharing its name, because it was so authentic and so local that I wanted to keep it for myself. But the food was good and deserves a mention.

Our pick was Odean Restaurant, and it was excellent. Simple, local, and full of flavor.

We ordered a basket of prawn dim sum to share, I got a bowl of noodles with prawn wonton and crab meat, and Rob got the noodles with prawn wonton, crab meat and roasted pork. Apparently, Rob’s dish is the most popular one. To wash down a glass of cold lemongrass tea and chrysanthemum tea.

It was the perfect ending to the afternoon.

Is this free walking tour in Bangkok worth it?

Yes. Absolutely.
