After doing a free walking tour in Bangkok, more specifically the Bangrak Art & Cultural Walk, I can say this: it was one of the most interesting and relaxed ways I’ve experienced the city, and it is completely free.

You can tip if you want, but there’s no pressure. And honestly, that takes away a lot of the awkwardness some people feel at the end of free tours.

From the start, the vibe felt relaxed. No sales pitch. No pushing. Just walking, listening, asking questions, and discovering parts of Bangkok that I probably would have walked right past on my own.

My experience on a Free Walking Tour in Bangrak, Bangkok

Our tour wasn’t just a history lecture; it was a sensory deep dive. We started with a scenic boat ride along the Chao Phraya River, getting a riverfront view of the skyline.

The itinerary: from Art Deco to ancient alleys

Here is what we explore in Bangrak ares:

• Alleys & Walls –  covered with street art
• Warehouse 30: a creative hub that feels like a hidden Brooklyn in the heart of Thailand, filled with local art, design, and cafés.
• The Grand Postal Building: I never expected to find a massive Art Deco landmark in Bangkok, but its striking architecture is a photographer’s dream.
• A Tale of Two Religions: we passed by the Haroon Mosque, home to one of the city’s oldest Muslim communities, followed by the elegant Assumption Church.
• A peaceful Thai temple hidden away in the old town that felt worlds away from the city’s traffic.

I found Bangrak a great area for a walking tour.

Bangrak is ideal for a Bangkok walking tour because the distances are manageable and the area is flat. So it was easy to walk and enjoy even on a sunny day (I did this tour in January, on a Sunday morning).

Bangkrak has a good mix of old and new and it’s well connected by BTS (the skytrain) and by boat. So it doesn’t matter where you are staying, it will probably be easy to get here for the free walking tour. 

More importantly, it tells a story. Bangrak is not frozen in time. It’s constantly changing, and I could see it. Walking through it helps you understand how Bangkok evolved into the city it is today.

• Dress for teh heat

Bangkok is hot. Even in the cooler months, walking for two hours means you’ll sweat. Wear light, breathable clothes and comfortable walking shoes. Hats and sunglasses are a good help as well.

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Grab water at a 7-Eleven before the meeting point. You’ll enjoy the walk much more.

I’ve always believed that free walking tours are the best way to understand a city, and usually it’s our first activity when arriving at a new destination. I believe that a walking tour gives you a good first perspective of the city, so later you can choose the attractions you want to visit and see the destination with more context.

We had never done a free walking tour in Bangkok before, simply because it didn’t exist or, at least, I had never heard about it. Now there are not only one, but two free walking tours in Bangkok. I did one of them, and Rob did both.

I’m sharing in this article my honest opinion, what we saw, how the tour works, and why I think it’s worth adding to your Bangkok itinerary, whether it’s your first visit or not.

So, let’s get started.

Why did we choose this free walking tour?

Bangkok can feel intense. Big avenues, traffic, noise, heat. I love it! But many people end up seeing only the classic highlights: temples, malls, rooftop bars. All great, and you should definitely do them, but there is so much more. Trust me!

A free walking tour of Bangkok is a great way to experience a different side of the city, especially when you walk with someone who actually lives here. You pass through neighborhoods, small streets, local markets, and areas where people live and work every day.

The tour we did was organized by TakeMeTour. I’ve already done a couple of tours with them. I wrote about my incredible trip to Chiang Rai, our amazing day trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, and we even shared a video of our Bangkok Chinatown food tour.

Knowing TakeMeTour, we decided to give this TAGTHAi Free Walking Tour Bangkok Chinatown Hidden Alleys & Talat Noi a go.

I chose this tour because it focuses on two very interesting areas: Bangkok Chinatown and the Talad Noi neighborhood. Both places are rich in history and culture.

FYI: You may hear both Talad Noi and Talat Noi, they are the same place.

Day and time of our Bangkok Free Walking Tour

We did the tour on a Sunday afternoon in January. It was just Rob and me. Our guide said that groups are usually small, but that day only Rob and I showed up. And honestly, I felt very lucky.

The tour lasted about two hours, which I think is perfect in Bangkok’s heat. Long enough to learn and explore, but not exhausting. It started at 4:00 pm, which was also great to avoid the early afternoon heat.

Meeting our guide and why local background matters

Our guide was Ken, and one thing that really stood out was that his family has Chinese roots. This made a huge difference, as he has a deep understanding of the area and its history.

We talked a lot during the walk, and he was very curious about Brazil. Our conversation went far beyond a traditional tour, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

I’ve been traveling to and living in Thailand for years; my first time in Bangkok was back in 2014, and even so, I still learned new things with Ken.

Walking through a different side of Chinatown

When people think of Bangkok Chinatown, they usually imagine neon signs, busy streets, and endless street food. And yes, it is all that, but it’s also much more.

This Chinatown walking tour in Bangkok takes you through smaller streets and alleys, where people live, pray, and work. It felt more real and less touristy.

We also came across many cats along the way, and if you’re a cat lover like me, you know how that instantly makes the experience even better. Puuurfect!

Talad Noi: trendy, creative and worth seeing

One of my favorite parts of the tour was Talad Noi.

Even though I lived in Bangkok before, I hadn’t really explored Talat Noi after it became so popular for its street art, creative spaces, and cafés. Rob used to run around this area years ago, and he was surprised by how much more charming and touristic it has become.

Walking here with a guide helped me understand the area better. Yes, it’s trendy now, but it’s still a living neighborhood with an interesting history behind its name and location (ask Ken about it!).

Many travel influencers say that Talad Noi is the coolest neighborhood in Bangkok, and yes, it might be. Check on Instagram and TikTok, and you’ll see Talad Noi street art, colorful murals, old houses, and narrow streets full of character and cute cafes.

Talad Noi feels charming without trying too hard. It’s a place where you want to walk slowly, take your time, and take as many photos as possible. Just keep in mind that more and more tourists are visiting, so it can get busy.

Communication during our Bangkok free walking tour

The tour is done in English. Ken speaks English well, but he does have a strong Thai accent. Sometimes it was a bit hard to understand everything, but that’s real life, and it was never a big problem.

English is not my native language either, so I simply asked him to repeat or explain things again. We understood each other in the end.

If you’re worried about your English level, don’t be. This free walking tour in Bangkok is about connection, not perfection.

Perfect timing:

The tour ends right before dinner

The tour ended around 6 pm on Chinatown’s main road, just when the area came alive for the evening. Restaurants open, street food stalls appear, and the atmosphere changes completely.

This is ideal. You’re already there, hungry, and surrounded by food.

Restaurant tips and crab noodles

We received at the end of the tour a link with restaurant recommendations in Chinatown, which I loved. Even as a seasoned traveler in Thailand, choosing where to eat in Chinatown can be overwhelming.

We followed the tour recommendation and ended up in an amazing restaurant. I thought twice about sharing its name, because it was so authentic and so local that I wanted to keep it for myself. But the food was good and deserves a mention.

Our pick was Odean Restaurant, and it was excellent. Simple, local, and full of flavor. 

We ordered a basket of prawn dim sum to share, I got a bowl of noodles with prawn wonton and crab meat, and Rob got the noodles with prawn wonton, crab meat and roasted pork. Apparently, Rob’s dish is the most popular one. To wash down a glass of cold lemongrass tea and chrysanthemum tea. 

It was the perfect ending to the afternoon.

Is this free walking tour in Bangkok worth it?

Yes. Absolutely.

This walking tour in Bangkok is free, informative, relaxed, and well-paced. It gives you a new perspective on the city.

For first-time visitors, it’s a great introduction.

The Kimberley is not just about stunning landscapes; it also has a rich history that goes back 40,000 years. Kimberley is the land of the world’s oldest living cultures and ancient rock art sites. If you want to get a glimpse of it, add these two places to your Kimberley itinerary.

Mimbi Caves are a unique geological and cultural site located approximately 90 km from Fitzroy Crossing town. They are an impressive system of limestone caves formed within 350 million years, and it’s where the Gooniyandi people lived. It’s interesting to know that Mimbi Caves is 100% indigenous owned and operated. Don’t skip this visit. 

Munurru is a sacred rock art site on Mitchell Plateau. It has rock paintings in both the Bradshaw and Wandjina traditions, which are impressive.

If “wild” is what you seek, the Kimberley delivers. Options range from day trips (scenic flights and speedboat tours) to multi-day overland expeditions and small-ship cruises. My advice: search for Kimberley tours that suit your travel style, and you’ll enjoy every second of your trip.

Here’s what to add to your bucket list if you want a balanced Kimberley trip that mixes scenery, culture, and adventure:

• Book scenic flights and make sure you see the Bungle Bungle Range and the Horizontal Falls from the air. It’s the best way to appreciate the massive scale of these natural wonders.

• Cruise the Kimberley Coast, it’s a must! The cruises reach the most remote cliffs, tidal falls, the Montgomery Reef, and islands that are completely inaccessible by land. 

• Drive the Gibb River Road. This classic 4WD overland route takes you to experience the real outback, including cattle-station culture and rugged terrain. It’s one of the greatest road trips in Australia. 

• Hike and swim in the gorges. You’ll need those cold dips! Prioritize Bell Gorge, Manning Gorge, and Emma Gorge for great walks and refreshing pools.

• Explore caves and rivers. Check out the unique underground passages of Tunnel Creek and see the freshwater crocodiles safely in the pools of Windjana Gorge.

• Accessibility: roads are open, allowing access to national parks and remote areas like the Bungle Bungle Range and the Gibb River Road.
• Waterfalls: while the waterfalls are at their most powerful just after the wet season (April to June), they remain impressive throughout the dry season, offering fantastic opportunities for viewing and swimming.
• Cruises: this is the peak season for Kimberley cruise operators, ensuring a full schedule of departures and prime conditions for coastal exploration. Remember to book in advance!

The wet season, from October to March, brings monsoonal rains, high humidity, and reshapes the landscape. Waterfalls and floodplains become dramatically beautiful, but many roads and access points close. 

Unless you are seeking a very remote, specialized wet-season experience, the dry season is recommended for general tourism and most Kimberley expeditions.

Strategic cities you must add to your itinerary

Australia’s western territory is vast and not very populated, which makes it incredibly raw and beautiful. When planning your trip, these are the main cities or towns you can use as bases to explore Kimberley.

• Broome: the largest town and tourism hub of the region. A vibrant coastal town famous for Cable Beach sunsets and rich pearling history. It offers great accommodation options and an airport with flights from Perth and other major Australian cities. Attractions: Cable Beach, Chinatown, Gantheaume Point, and acts as a gateway to the Dampier Peninsula and coastal attractions like Horizontal Falls.
• Derby: it’s the gateway to the northern Kimberley, known for its impressive tidal ranges. Attractions: the Derby Wharf Precinct and it’s a base for exploring the Gibb River Road.
• Kununurra: it has an airport that connects Darwin and Broome. For those driving the Gibb River Road from the east or exploring the northern parks, it is a crucial base.  Attractions: the perfect base for exploring Lake Argyle, Lake Kununurra, the Bungle Bungle Range, and the Ord River Scheme.
• Halls Creek: an important town in the southern part of the region. Attractions: close to Wolfe Creek Crater National Park and a gateway for exploring the southern parts of the Kimberley. 

Where to stay in the Kimberley, WA

When planning your trip to the Kimberley, you will find a range of accommodation that reflects the region’s wilderness. 

In the main towns of Broome and Kununurra, you will find standard hotels and resorts, but once you head into the true Outback, options shift dramatically. Along the Gibb River Road, expect basic bush camps and rustic cattle stations that offer camping or simple rooms.

If you choose one of Kimberley Cruises’ trips, your accommodation will be on your expedition cruise ship, which can range from small, casual boats to sophisticated, luxury vessels.

This is one of the most remote regions in Australia. I recommend booking accommodation in advance, especially during the dry season (May to September) when most travelers visit Kimberley.

Keep in mind that many wilderness lodges close in the wet season due to flooding, so always double-check opening dates before planning. 

For those up for a real adventure of self-driving or camping, carry plenty of water and fuel.  Distances are vast, and services are limited. But this is a subject for another Kimberley travel guide.

The beach is littered with tall palm trees and in addition to a front-row seat for the sunset, you’ll also get to see the silhouettes of the rolling hills in the distance. No need to say it’s one of the best beaches in Koh Chang.

Lonely Beach, Koh Chang

One of the reasons why we love Koh Chang so much is because unlike other islands in Thailand, Koh Chang’s beaches stay relatively garbage-free; Lonely Beach is one of them.

Sure, Koh Chang Lonely Beach is known for its beach bars and parties, but it is also one of the best places in Koh Chang to watch the sunset. Grab a drink with friends or sit on the white sand beach in solitude while the sun dips below the horizon.

2. Check out Khlong Phlu Waterfall

Along with epic sunsets, Koh Chang is known for its waterfalls.

Khlong Phlu Waterfall is one of the most popular falls on the island, and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it breathtakingly beautiful, but you can swim right beneath it in the natural pool. Don’t forget your swimming suit; the water is cool and clean.

How To Get To Khlong Phlu Waterfall

To reach Khlong Phlu Waterfall, you’ll need to enter Mo Koh Chang National Park. For foreigners, expect to pay 200 baht per person (about USD 6).

From the parking area, a half-mile hike will take you to the waterfall. This is an easy trail that can be completed by visitors of all fitness levels.

3. Go snorkeling in Koh Chang

The island is home to pristine coral reefs and with gentle tides and nutrient-rich waters, it creates a natural habitat for all types of fish. Whether you join a guided tour or you do a self-guided tour, you will love what you can discover in the ocean surrounding the island.

To find the best snorkeling spots on the island, go to Bang Bao Pier and sign up for a Koh Chang snorkeling trip or catch a boat to one of the small neighboring islands: Koh Rang or Koh Wai snorkeling spots are amazing. These islands boast some of the most beautiful reefs in the Gulf of Thailand.

A few sea creatures to look for while snorkeling the island reefs are the yellow boxfish and the moray eel.

4. Go for a day trip to Koh Yuak

Another one of the best things to do on the island of Koh Chang is to visit Koh Yuak.

This small island is accessible only by boat and has beautiful white sand beaches for soaking up the sun. There are also plenty of opportunities for water sports such as kayaking or paddleboarding.

To get to Koh Yuak from Koh Chang, go to the west side of the island near Kai Bae Viewpoint. Many locals park their boats here and offer rides to tourists.

If you’re struggling to find a boat to take you to Koh Yuak, ask one of the many resorts near Kai Bae Viewpoint and they will easily be able to point you in the right direction.

5. Volunteer with the Koh Chang Animal Project

Any animal lovers out there looking for what to do in Koh Chang? 

Koh Chang Animal Project is a worthwhile cause that helps animals in need on the island.

The facility was created by a woman named Lisa McAlonie whose goal was to develop a place that helped locals understand, learn, and care for their pets. They also provide care for stray street dogs and cats that have been abandoned.

Volunteering at the Animal Project is one of the best things to do on the island because not only will you learn a lot about caring for animals, but you’ll also be giving back to the island. You can set up a time to volunteer by going to their website, Koh Chang Animal Project.

6. Happy Hour on Koh Chang beaches

One of the most affordable things you can do on the island of Koh Chang is enjoy happy hour at a beach bar with friends.

Unlike many other destinations in the world, Thailand is wildly affordable and that remains true for this paradise as well. But, an important thing to know about enjoying happy hour in Koh Chang is knowing which beach bars to go to. Here are our favorite beach bars in Koh Chang:

Mimo Beach Bar

This beach bar remains a hidden gem on the island. Grab a few cheap beers (Singha is our favorite) and exchange stories with the bartender as you wait for the sun to set.

To find Mimo Beach Bar, head to the south end of Lonely Beach.

Beautiful Bar

I think the name speaks for itself here… Beautiful Bar is situated right on the ocean, just south of Lonely Beach. Cocktails at this beach bar are delicious and affordable and if you stay long enough, you’ll get to watch an epic fire show in Koh Chang.

7. Koh Chang dive experience

Sure, Koh Chang isn’t as well-known for its diving as Koh Tao, but it’s still a great place to get your scuba diving fix. There are some amazing dive sites in Koh Chang for both beginner and experienced divers, so spend a day exploring the underwater world.

Koh Rang

Whether you come for snorkeling or scuba diving, you’ll be thoroughly impressed by the reef here. Thanks to the national park that protects this area, the sealife is thriving.

Shipwreck

Another awesome dive site is the HTMS Chang Wreck, a planned shipwreck for divers. If your current certification permits it, this dive would be an incredible activity to add to your Koh Chang to-do list.

8. Visit a fishing village

One of the most unique things to do in Koh Chang is to visit a fishing village. Salakkok is a fishing village located on the south end of the island and it’s a great place to immerse yourself into the Thai culture. Among all Koh Chang tourist attractions, this is the lesser known, but it’s worth doing it. Watch the locals living and working in this secluded village, as well as take part in some of their day-to-day activities.

A few of the best things to do in Salakkok village include:

Firefly Watching

If you decide to visit Salakkok Fishing Village at all, you must stay until the sun goes down. Take a traditional Thai boat into the dark mangroves and watch as fireflies come into view. Soon you’ll be dazzled by thousands of them flying around you. This is truly one of the top things to do in Koh Chang.

Explore Mangroves

Take a canoe tour here to experience the quiet mangroves of southern part of the island. This traditional Thai boat ride will expose you to some of the most secluded areas of the island.

9. See the island from above

There’s no better way to see Koh Chang than from above. With its lush jungle, rolling hills, and gorgeous beaches surrounded by bright blue water, catching a glimpse of it all from a viewpoint is one of the best things to do in Koh Chang.

Kai Bae Viewpoint

The first viewpoint I suggest visiting is Kai Bae Viewpoint. From here, you’ll be able to see the Koh Man Nai and the expansive views of the Gulf of Thailand from two separate observation decks. 

We really enjoyed this Koh Chang viewpoint because it’s a great place to spend time; they’ve built a small cafe near the viewpoint that is perfect for refreshments and quick snacks.

White Sand Beach Viewpoint

Another popular viewpoint in Koh Chang is the White Sand Beach Viewpoint. In my opinion, this one doesn’t quite compare to the Kai Bae Viewpoint, but it still offers sweeping views of the sea and the white sand beach below.

My biggest reservation about this viewpoint is that there are plenty of macaques (monkeys) waiting to prey on tourists. Monkeys aren’t my cup of tea, but if you like them, you might enjoy this viewpoint more than I did. 

Ao Ka Rang Viewpoint

A hidden gem that goes by the name of Ao Ka Rang. Located on the southeastern leg of the island, it is a lot quieter than other areas that tend to attract tourists.

So whether you want a view of the dense jungle interior or a view of the bay filled with tiny islands, Ao Ka Rang is the place to go.

10. Kayak to Koh Man Nai

For adventurous activities in Koh Chang, consider renting a kayak and paddling out to the small island Koh Man Nai.

Koh Man Na island is located just off the west coast of Koh Chang near Lonely Beach. Kayaks are cheap to rent and the island isn’t difficult to reach thanks to its close proximity to the mainland.

Once you reach Koh Man Nai, spend some time on the less-crowded beaches and take a dip in the ocean to cool off before your return paddling trip.

11. Experience Koh Chang’s Nightlife

Sure, Koh Chang isn’t Koh Phangan or Koh Phi Phi (two islands popularly known for their beach parties), but the nightlife in Koh Chang shouldn’t be overlooked.

If you’re a backpacker or simply looking to have a few cocktails while listening to music, there are many bustling bars and nightclubs around the island. I suggest spending time in Lonely Beach, an area known for Koh Chang nightlife, fun hostels, and good parties.

After watching the sunset on the beach, head into the town near Lonely Beach and discover glow-in-the-dark parties, cheap buckets of booze, and friendly travelers looking to meet new friends.

12. Take a Boat to Koh Wai

For even more beach beauty, take a day trip out to the island of Koh Wai, located just south of Koh Chang.

Once you get to the island, spend your time wandering around and exploring this little paradise, snorkeling and discovering the incredible reefs, or just relaxing on the beach.

There are two ways to get to Koh Wai: by speedboat or by slow boat. There are several trips to Koh Wai each day from the pier at Bang Bao. Expect to pay more for the speed boat than the slow boat. To be safe, I would budget approximately $15 each way for the boat ride.

13. Hike to the top of Koh Chang

Get off the beaten path by summiting the island’s tallest mountain, Mount Salakphet. From the top of this peak, you’ll see the coast of Cambodia to the north, a sprawling valley to the west, and an expansive view down south.

But before you jump on the trail, it’s important to note that this hike is not for the faint of heart. During your trek, you’ll conquer nearly 2,500 feet of elevation gain in just a few miles. With the heat and humidity, be sure you’re prepared with plenty of water and replenishing electrolytes.

14. Relax on Koh Chang’s best beaches

You can’t go to a Thai island without spending time at a beach. Luckily, this island has plenty of them and they are some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. So here are two of our favorite Koh Chang Beaches:

Klong Prao Beach, Koh Chang

For one of the island’s prettiest beachside vistas, head to the west side of the island to Klong Prao Beach. Whether you’re traveling as a couple or with your family, this beach is the perfect place to enjoy a drink, take in some sun and surf, or just relax for an afternoon.

White Sand Beach, Koh Chang

Venture north to another one of Koh Chang’s best beaches, White Sand Beach. This beach stretches over two kilometers and thanks to its pure white sand, it’s popular with couples, families, and backpackers alike.

With plenty of restaurants lining White Sand Beach Koh Chang, you won’t have to go far to find food or drinks, which makes it the perfect place to spend an entire day.

15. See Wat Salak Petch

If you didn’t spend enough time in Bangkok to see the beautiful temples, you’re in luck! There is an incredible temple on the island called Wat Salak Petch.

Ornately decorated, Wat Salak Petch is one of the best things to see in Koh Chang if you want to get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in Thai culture. Bring a little extra money with you during this outing to donate to the temple and to purchase small knick-knacks and bracelets from the locals.

16. Go to Koh Chang Night Market

We can’t talk about what to do in Koh Chang without talking about food.

When the sun goes down, head to the White Sand Beach Night Market and indulge in some of the island’s best cuisine. The night market in Koh Chang is open until 11 pm every night and offers a variety of dishes that are sure to please everyone.

This is the perfect place to eat in Koh Chang for dinner before returning to your hotel or hostel for the night. You’ll find fresh seafood, BBQ skewers, and a variety of Thai desserts (try a roti, you won’t regret it). Prices at the night market are much cheaper than anything you’ll find in one of the resort restaurants.

How many days do you need in Koh Chang?

How many days should you stay in Koh Chang? Well, that depends!

It’s one of the largest islands in Thailand, so it would take weeks to explore all that it has to offer. That said, Koh Chang is still worth visiting even if you only have a few days.

Ideally, you’ll have at least four days on the island so that you can visit the national park, Koh Chang beaches, and take day trips to the gorgeous islands nearby. Spending four days on the island will also justify the extensive travel needed to get there.

Located near the eastern Thai border, the island might be a good stop on your way to island-hop along the coast of Cambodia.

Getting to Koh Chang, Thailand

There are several different ways to get to Koh Chang but it will completely depend on where you’re coming from. Here are the most common ways to reach the island:

How to get to Koh Chang by Flight

The fastest way to get to Koh Chang is by plane. Although there isn’t an airport on the island of Koh Chang, there is a small airport on the mainland in Trat province.

Direct flights depart daily from Bangkok. Bangkok Airways serves this route, but flight times change depending on the day of the week and the time of year. You can search for the best flights to Koh Chang using Skyscanner or Kiwi.com. 

Once you reach the Trat airport, you’ll take a taxi over to Ao Thammachat Pier. At the pier, purchase a ticket to Ao Sapparot Pier in Koh Chang. You’ll pay approximately $2-3 for a one-way ferry ride.

How to get to Koh Chang by bus

If you need an affordable way to travel to Koh Chang, consider taking the bus from Bangkok. There are many buses that travel from Bangkok to Koh Chang each day from the Ekkamai Bus Terminal or the Mo Chit Bus Terminal.

The buses are usually comfortable and cost between 300 and 450 baht depending on the time of year. It will take approximately 6 hours to get from Bangkok to Ao Thammachat Pier in Trat.

From the pier, take one of the ferries across to Koh Chang. Remember, that ferry ride will cost approximately $2-3 USD one way.

How to get to Koh Chang by minibus

My favorite way to travel in Thailand is by “minibus”. And if you’re new to traveling in Thailand, a minibus is what they call those large cargo vans that can fit 12-15 people.

These minibusses are cheap, comfortable, and a lot faster than riding the bus. Hop on a minibus at the Ekkamai Bus Terminal (conveniently a stop on the BTS) and expect to pay around 450 to 600 baht one way.

Another option is to book a transfer from your hotel in Bangkok (or in any destination nearby) to the island. These services are reliable and you can book in advance, so you don’t need to worry during your trip.

Where to stay in Koh Chang: hotels and hostels

 As for accommodation in Koh Chang, you have a few options.

Just like anywhere else in Thailand, you’ll find plenty of hostels but expect to pay more for a dorm room bunk bed here than in other places in the country.

On the other hand, there are mid-range hotels and upscale resorts in Koh Chang as well. Our favorite place to stay in Koh Chang was at The Chill Resort & Spa, which provided luxury at a reasonable price.

How to get around Koh Chang, Thailand

Once you reach the island, you can choose from several different transportation options.

Motorbike

By far the easiest way to get around Koh Chang is by motorbike. Renting a motorbike will cost approximately USD 8 per day and there are rental shops on every corner. Be sure to bring your passport because you’ll need to present it to the motorbike rental shop.

Note: If you’re unsure how to rent a motorbike or you need assistance, I recommend asking your accommodation host. They are sure to be very helpful. And don’t forget to buy Travel Insurance before traveling and driving your motorbike in Thailand, SafetyWing and HeyMondo are good options.

Songthaew

If you’ve never driven a motorbike before, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend starting in Thailand. Instead, you might consider taking songthaews to get around the island.

Songthaews are truck taxis that can carry many people at once. These truck taxis are readily available, so flag one down, pay the small fee, and reach your destination without having to drive yourself.

When to visit Koh Chang?

When planning your Koh Chang visit, try to schedule your trip during the dry season. The dry season in Thailand lasts from November until April. It’s the best time to visit Koh Chang and many other destinations in the country.

During these months, you’ll experience more sunshine and cooler weather. Unfortunately, this is also considered “high season” in Thailand, so you can expect more tourists during these months.

Luckily, Koh Chang is far less popular of a destination than other Thai islands like Koh Samui or Koh Tao, so you’ll still get to experience this island paradise without fighting massive crowds during these months.

When planning your trip to Jamaica you must take into consideration Jamaican weather, places you want to visit, what you want to do, how much you want to spend, and when are the peak, low, and hurricane seasons.

But don’t worry, planning the best time to travel to Jamaica is not that complicated, especially after reading this post.  When is the best time to visit Jamaica?

To find out the best time to travel to Jamaica we need to look at the island’s temperatures, rainfall, hurricanes, and low and peak seasons. We’ll be discussing all these details and by the end of this island guide, you’ll be able to choose your perfect time to travel to Jamaica.

 Jamaica Climate

Jamaica has a warm tropical climate, which means that it is hot all year round. Jamaica’s average minimum temperature is 22ºC (73ºF)  and its maximum temperature is 31ºC (89ºF), and it doesn’t change much between winter and summer months. The changes in seasons are more related to rainfall, humidity, and hurricanes.

The good news is that it doesn’t matter the season, the sea is always warm, perfect for water sports and relaxation. 

Jamaica Winter 

There is no real winter in Jamaica as it never gets cold there. The winter months (December to March) are warm and dry, which means that they are the perfect sunny escape for European and Northern Americans that want to have a break from their icy winter. 

The coldest month is January with temperatures reaching 20ºC (68ºF). 

Jamaica Summer 

Summer in Jamaica is from June to September, and they are the hottest and most humid months of the year. July is the hottest month in Jamaica with temperatures above 30ºC (87ºF). 

Jamaica Spring and Autumn

Spring is a mix of Summer and Winter, with balmy weather and a slight increase in rain. On the other hand, Autumn is when the hurricane season happens. 

Our advice for planning a holiday in Jamaica is to focus on the dry vs wet seasons as we’ll explain below. By doing so, you will be able to plan your trip better and find the best time to visit Jamaica. 

Jamaica Dry Season and Jamaica Peak Season

There are two dry seasons in Jamaica, the longest one being from December to May (Winter and Spring) and the other one from July to August. The dry season means fewer days with rain and warm weather.

From December to March the average number of rainy days is 5 to 6 per month, the same for July. February is the driest month with an average of only 3 days of rain. 

Of course, the dry months are also the peak season in Jamaica. The island sees an influx of tourists from mid-December to March, which means that it’s the busiest time and it’s the most expensive period to travel to Jamaica.

Christmas, New Year’s and Easter holidays are even busier. Keep in mind that March is the Spring break season and the island gets packed as well.

Jamaica’s peak season continues in April and May, but with a fewer number of tourists and a bit more chance of rain. This is a great time of the year to combine good weather and good deals, as many all-inclusive resorts drop their prices. 

Pros of visiting Jamaica during the dry season:

There will be less or no risk of rain.

You can explore the outdoors and beautiful beaches without worrying about rain.

Coldest temperatures of the year.

It’s party season.

The hurricane season is over.

Cons of visiting Jamaica during the dry season:

Hotels, resorts, and beaches are packed with travelers.

Prices are higher and you must book your accommodation at least 3 months in advance, this advice is for small properties and also big hotels like Sandals Resorts.

For Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter it’s recommended to book your accommodation one year in advance, especially if you want to stay in an all-inclusive resort.

Rainy Season in Jamaica and Low Season in Jamaica

Some people call it the rainy season, others the wet season, but both mean that you will have warm temperatures and a high amount of tropical rainfall. 

Jamaica’s rainy season happens at two different times of the year, the Spring rainy season is from May to June, and the Autumn rainy season is from September to November. The last one happens at the same time as the hurricane season – more about it below. 

October is the rainiest month, with 14 days of rain. 

The average rainfall can vary according to the island’s region. So when planning your trip to Jamaica keep in mind that September and October are the wettest months in Kingston and Ocho Rios, Montego Bay receives heavy storms and rain between September and December, and Negril’s wettest month is October. 

Pros of visiting Jamaica during the wet season:

The tropical rainfall is not constant, there will be hours of sunshine.

It’s always warm.

 It’s the low season, prices are cheaper and you can find great deals for hotels and activities.

There are fewer tourists and the places are quiet.

Cons of visiting Jamaica during the wet season:

Hot and humid weather.

The hottest temperatures of the year.

It might rain every day.

Many hotels and resorts can be under construction or renovation during this season.

Hurricane Season in Jamaica

Jamaica’s annual hurricane season is from June to November, being August and September the months that historically had more tropical storms, cyclones, and hurricanes. The good news is that Jamaica is not badly affected by tropical storms like other Caribbean islands, especially the ones located northerly. 

The data from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica shows that a few hurricanes hit the islands directly. What happens is that they cause a big increase in rainfall, which is already high during those months. 

Despite what many people think, there are tourists traveling to Jamaica during the hurricane season. Hotels and resorts usually offer big discounts during these months attracting travelers that want to save and are not bothered by the tropical rain.

For those inclined to travel to Jamaica during the peak hurricane season, our advice is to book a last-minute travel deal and keep an eye on the weather forecast. The period between the peak and low travel seasons is called shoulder season, and it can be one of the best times to visit Jamaica. The shoulder seasons go from mid-April to May, and from November to mid-December.

If you travel to Jamaica from mid-April to May you will find warmer temperatures and an increase in rain, but not as bad as during the wet months. The crowds are leaving the island so you can relax and enjoy it at a slower and more relaxed pace. 

From mid-November, the hurricane season is almost over and you can visit Jamaica without the crowds that will arrive in the second half of December. During this period the number of rainy days starts to drop and most hotels and resorts have finished their renovations. 

A few things to keep in mind about the shoulder season:

– If you want to save money, opt for visiting Jamaica between September and November, as they are not popular times yet.

– Jamaica’s Bacchanal Carnival season happens in April.

– Honeymooners like to travel to Jamaica between April and June. 

Pros of visiting Jamaica during the shoulder season:

Warm daily temperatures.

It doesn’t rain that much.

You can find good hotel prices.

You can find good flight deals.

There are fewer tourists and the places are getting quiet, or starting to be busy.

Cons of visiting Jamaica during the shoulder season:

There aren’t many beach parties going on.

It rains more than in the peak season.

When is the best time of year to visit Jamaica?

Now that you know everything about Jamaica’s weather and festivities, let’s summarize it. The best time to visit Jamaica can be divided into two categories: the peak season and the shoulder season.

The peak tourist season is from mid-December to March (peak months), and the beginning of April. 

The shoulder season will be from mid-April to May and from November to mid-December. 

Why are these the best times to go to Jamaica?

The peak season will have sunny days and almost no rain. The island is in full swing and everything is happening. Most travelers go to Jamaica during this period (December to March).

The shoulder season has warm temperatures with a bit more rain, but you get better prices and hotel deals. Not to mention that this beautiful island is less crowded. During shoulder seasons (mid-April to May and from November to mid-December) you avoid the wet and humid months, and the hurricane season.

I personally consider Phi Phi Island a small piece of paradise surrounded by incredibly good-looking turquoise waters and gorgeous white sand beaches. Rather you are seeking for adventures or just looking forward for relaxing at the beach, there are many things to do in Phi Phi, so save a few days of your itinerary for this beautiful island. I would recommend you to stay for at least 3 days, so you have enough time to enjoy the top attractions in Phi Phi Island. 

Only one of Phi Phi Islands is inhabited, Phi Phi Don, which means all the others will be reached by boat and that is something you don’t want to miss. So, a boat tour is one of the top things to do in Phi Phi island!   

– Phi Phi Island Boat Tours are a must

Most boat tours in Phi Phi island will take you to the best spots as Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, Loh Samah Bay, Nui Bay and Long Beach. You will be able to go snorkeling in Phi Phi, swimming, watching cute monkeys run around on white sands and lay back on unforgettable spots there. 

It’s important to know that Maya Bay is finally open, after years of being closed for conservation purposes. Now you can step on ‘The Beach’, take some nice photos but you can’t swim. 

There are many tour options available on the island, The Pirate Boat and The Gold Day Tour are great group options and you can ask for info at one of the many tour shops around the island. Well, for the ocean lovers, a boat tour in Phi Phi Island might not be satisfying enough, then you should take the adventure to the next level. How about diving in Koh Phi Phi? You will be amazed by what the underwater world has to offer there. So many colors, so much life, so many fish, Nemos, corals, turtles, friendly sharks and much more. – Phi Phi Island Viewpoint

If you are willing to see the island from up above, Phi Phi viewpoint is what you are looking for. There are signs around the island to help you find the way, and it’s also on the maps online. It’s very easy to find the way to the viewpoint, the path is all concreted but get ready to sweat loads, as there will be many steps on your way. It might be tiring but this is one of the activities on the list of what to do in Phi Phi Island that you shouldn’t miss.

There are 3 viewpoints in the same complex and you will have to pay an entrance fee of 30 THB. The viewpoint is very busy at sunset, but another great option is to go there at high tide, that way the ocean will be nice and blue and it will make the perfect background for your photos. Keep in mind high tide happens at different times every day. 

– What to do in Phi Phi Island for free [or low cost]

Looking for free things to do in Phi Phi Islands? Well, Phi Phi Island is very small and full of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars to check out. Besides strolling around the island you can also relax, go for a swim and enjoy Nice Beach and Loh Dalum Beach all day, or at least during high tide, as they are only a few minute’s walking distance from Tonsai pier.

Go hiking to Long Beach, instead of taking a taxi boat there. Let’s begin! Long Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Phi Phi Island, worth spending a whole day there. It will take about 40 minutes from Tonsai pier there, if you are used to walking and don’t stop on the way. It’s quite easy to find and you will get to see some unknown empty beaches on the way, don’t be shy, jump in the water to recharge your energies and continue the hike. There are some restaurants and bars available there and don’t forget your snorkeling gear as there is a great spot for it at the end of the beach and it’s free.

A great, fun and almost free things to do in Phi Phi is renting a kayak at Loh Dalum Beach, the beach where the parties happen every night (don’t worry, we will get to this subject soon). From there, paddle to Nui Bay and then to Monkey Beach. That should keep you busy and excited for quite a while. Just keep in mind you won’t come across any shops or restaurants on the way, so bring a waterproof bag, snacks, enough drinking water, a hat, sunscreen, snorkeling gear and a camera! It’s party time! Best parties in Phi Phi Island for you to choose from

If you are into partying, a pool party in Phi Phi Island isn’t a bad idea, right? Even if you are not a big party person, you can join the beginning of the parties, before it gets busier and leave when you are done. The two main ones happen at the hotels Ibiza House Phi Phi and PP Princess Resort, not every night though. Check out their websites before going, at the moment, they have been happening every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, from 2 pm to 7 pm, at Ibiza House Phi Phi and every Friday, from 1 pm to 8 pm, at PP Princess Resort. They best part is: no entrance fee… Cheers!

Searching for what to do in Phi Phi Island after sunset? Don’t worry, Phi Phi Island nightlife will not let you down. The fire shows are most people’s favorite, they start around 9 pm every day along Loh Dalum Beach, in front of a few bars, the main one is Slinky Bar and you will surely be able to spot them from afar. Most of them are free of charge and you will be able to dance, listen to music and play fire games for free, free drinks might end up in your hands as well.

Wanna laugh out loud? You gotta give the Reggae Muay Thai Bar a try, where professionals and tourists challenge each other to fight in the ring. It turns out to be a lot of fun. It happens every night, starting between 9:30 pm and 10 pm and as long as you are having some drinks there, you will not be charged any entrance fee. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the prize for the winners of the night: a bucket! That’s the most consumed cocktail in Thailand, which is literally a plastic little bucket filled with a mix of your choice, usually vodka or rum and coke. 

I am more of a bar type of person, and there are many options in Phi Phi Island, from Irish pubs to Rock bars, or just a beer pong bar. You will find them all, just walk around and check them out. I personally love Kongsiam Bar, where there is a live band every night playing the best hits, those ones that everyone knows the lyrics and will happily sing along. Get ready to wake up voiceless the next day!

Where to stay in Phi Phi Island

Well, I will give you a quick summary of where to stay in Phi Phi Island, as it can get a bit tricky to choose a place. So, the first tip is: book your accommodation in Phi Phi Island in advance in case you are going during the high season. Second tip is: open your mind. I find it a bit hard to have all you wish for in a hotel in a single place in Phi Phi, but let me explain why.

Most of the hotels and businesses in general, as well as the main beaches (Nice Beach and Loh Dalum) are located around Tonsai pier, so it’s much easier to find accommodation around there. Also, it’s more practical to stay around there and be able to just walk to places and not rely on taxi boats every time you wish to leave your hotel and do something. But, there is a big chance of staying near a loud bar and not being able to fall asleep before 2 am. Most of the hotels in this area are small and don’t offer all the resort infrastructure you might be looking for, but a few do, you just need to do some research. 

The further you get from the pier, the harder it becomes to arrive at your hotel. As Phi Phi is not all flat some hotels located far from the pier are nice looking, super quiet, offer great features and price, but are up some hill or somewhere hard to get to. Remember what I said at the beginning of this article? There are no cars on Phi Phi Island!

The nicest resorts in Koh Phi Phi are located in the north of the island, on secluded beaches, which is awesome, but if you want to stroll around the island, have dinner somewhere else, join the boat tours around the island or go diving, that means, chartering a boat.

I recommend staying around Tonsai pier, but read carefully the reviews about the place you are willing to book. Here are only a few options to help you choose a place according to your budget, if you want more options of accommodation in Koh Phi Phi read our guide here.

Are you traveling on a budget or love socializing? Here is a nice hostel in a quiet location: The Pier 519 Hostel.

Pool Party in Phi Phi Island? Ibiza House Phi Phi it is! They offer shared and private rooms and are located beachfront, but don’t mind the noise. 

Looking for a simple, quiet and very well located hotel? Panmanee Hotel will do the job, perfect if you want to keep yourself busy in Phi Phi Island and have a good night of sleep after a busy day. 

For fancier resorts, I will suggest one near Tonsai Pier and one in the north of the island, but there are many more options. ChaoKoh Phi Phi Hotel & Resort is a great and quiet option for those who want to stay near Tonsai Pier. And Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort is a great option in the North of the island, away from everything, located on a beautiful beach, check it out. 

How to get to Phi Phi Island

After all this information, all you need to know is how to get to Phi Phi Island. So, let’s get moving? There is only one way to get to Phi Phi Island: by boat! You can go from Phuket to Phi Phi by ferry or catch a ferry from Krabi to Phi Phi. There are also speed boats and private boats available, so it’s up to you.

There are a few ferries leaving from both Krabi and Phuket along the day and most of the ferry companies will pick you up at your hotel, so no need to worry. Be prepared to spend about 2 hours on the ferry, but it will be worth it. You can check prices and timetables on 12GoAsia. You can purchase your tickets online as well as at any travel agency located in Krabi or Phuket, there is usually no need for booking them too in advance. 

In short, rather you are coming from Bangkok, Chiang Mai or any other place in Thailand, you need to find your way to Krabi or Phuket by bus (read our guide to travel in Thailand by bus here), by plane (find the best flights here) or by boat. Good thing is that Phuket and Krabi have international airports. Then you will need to catch a boat to Phi Phi Island.

It’s also good to mention to those on a tight schedule that don’t have many days in Thailand, it’s also possible to visit Phi Phi Island on a day tour. The best time to visit Phi Phi Island

The weather in the South West coast of Thailand, where Phi Phi is located is quite pleasant all year round. The high season is the dry season, starting in November and ending in April, when the monsoon kicks in slowly, but it usually rains once a day, not for long, with some exceptions. 

It gets very busy from mid-December until February which aren’t the hottest months of the year (still pretty warm though, an average of 28ºC). Then from February on it starts to get warmer and warmer until April, when the average is 33ºC. Great temperatures to swim all day, isn’t it?

Although many people are scared of the rain, there is no need for it! It hardly ever rains all day long. I would personally avoid July and August if I could, but if they were my only options, I would give it a try.  It’s always a good time to visit Koh Phi Phi!

Milan is an exciting city, and even though it’s packed with tourists, it’s a must-visit destination in Italy and Europe. The good news is that you can see the best of Milan in a couple of days, and taste the city’s history, art, fashion, and food. So, what to do in Milan in 3 days?

The truth is: you can do a lot and to inspire you we’ve prepared a 3-day itinerary that covers all Milan must-see attractions and a few of our favorite spots as well.

Why should you stay for 3 days in Milan? The answer is simple: most travelers want to do as much as possible on one trip, so 3 days in Milan would fit perfectly on a 10 or 15-day trip around Italy or Europe.

Also, a 3-day Milan itinerary is perfect for a city break or for spending a weekend in Milan.

We have visited Milan 6 times and I can honestly say that less than 3 days is not ideal. However, if you only have a day or two, it’s worth visiting Milan anyway.

Before we talk about what to do in Milan in 3 days, we need to talk about where to stay in Milan.

Location is everything and if you want to make the most of your trip, you need to book a hotel in Milan that is close to the attractions and public transportation. The best areas to stay in Milan are located within Zone 1, where you can walk to Milan’s top attractions or take a quick metro or tram ride to get around.

We’ve stayed in a couple of hotels in Milan city center, but so far the best one was Camperio Suites & Apartment. It has the best combination of good location, comfort, service, and privacy, to be honest, I wish we could live here.

The hotel is only a few steps from Sforzesco Castle [450 meters in Google Maps] and a 10-minute walk to Duomo Cathedral. The 4-star hotel is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, gelaterias, and shops. Public transportation is just around the corner.

We stayed in a Deluxe Suite and it felt more like a home than a hotel room. Comfy bed, squeaky clean bathroom with a bathtub, a living area, and a fully equipped kitchen.

We had it all for us, super convenient and beautifully decorated. What I loved the most was the apartments were located in an old building in one of the small alleys of the historical center.

The building has its own courtyard, the hotel has a lovely terrace and breakfast is served at the restaurant in the basement that also has a nice garden. When the sun is shining you can choose to have your cappuccino outside.

From luxury hotels to classic apartments and shared rooms, the city has it all. But finding mid-range or cheap hotels in Milan is not an easy task.

The huge variety of hotels and hostels available on booking platforms makes any attempt to search for the best hotel in Milan a daunting experience.

Another good area to stay in Milan is near the central station. It’s not so close to Milan’s top attractions but a good spot for those who need to leave the city early in the morning or catch a late-night train. Plus, around Milano Centrale, you find metro and trams that run throughout the city.

What to do in Milan in 3 days: places to visit and attractions

I love Milan, and every time we travel there we discover new places, cafes, and cute streets and always have an amazing time. Milan is beautiful, sexy and democratic, you can find everything and all kinds of people there. Here are the best things to do in Milan, places to visit, and our favorite spots:

Visit the impressive Duomo di Milano

Our list of the best places to visit in Milan must start with the magnificent Duomo Cathedral. The marble facade, the towers’ details, the rich interior, everything is stunning there. I still remember when I saw Duomo for the first time, on a rainy evening, surrounded by colorful umbrellas and people trying to take the best shot possible. Duomo is impressive!

Be smart and book your ticket to Duomo Cathedral in advance and from the official website. You can choose to visit only the cathedral or visit the cathedral plus the Crypt of St. Charles, Duomo Museum and the terrace [you can literally walk on the roof of the church]. I recommend you visit everything, just choose if you want to go up via lift or if you want to go up the stairs. An important tip, check the time for the last admission and go as late as possible so you can have a glimpse of the sunset from up there, it’s beautiful.

Get lost at Sforzesco Castle and Parco Sempione

Milan castle dates back to the 15th century and nowadays it is a museum where you can learn about its history and also stroll around the old walls and towers. Visiting the castle garden is free, you only need to pay to visit the expositions. When you arrive in front of Sforzesco Castle you will see a beautiful fountain and hundreds of tourists, don’t get intimidated by the crowd, walk into the main door, and as soon as you cross it you’ll see how big and beautiful the place is.

Keep walking and exploring until you arrive at the back of the castle where Parco Sempione is. This is the biggest urban park in Milan and it’s a great place to relax, play games and drink with friends. My suggestion is to explore it on foot or by bike and then relax like a true Milanese, don’t forget to bring a bottle of wine with you or buy some beers from the shops.

Plan your visit to Da Vinci’s Last Supper

The famous painting Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci is located in the refectory of Santa Maria Delle Grazie Convent and you can visit it. The 15th-century painting is one of the top things to see in Milan and to be able to admire it you must book your ticket in advance.

I’m not joking, to see the Last Supper in July or August you must book your ticket in May. So don’t miss the opportunity and plan it well. On the official website, you have all the information about tickets, visiting times, and the rules you to follow to visit this precious piece of history and art. 

If the dates don’t work out for you or if you can’t fit the visit on your Milan itinerary, don’t worry, you can still visit the church and enjoy the beautiful garden behind it.

Arts and much more at Pinacoteca di Brera

Another highlight on our list of places to visit in Milan is Pinacoteca di Brera. Even if you are not into arts, this place is gorgeous so try to squeeze a visit during your 3 days in Milan.

Pinacoteca di Brera is located at Palazzo Brera and you will find a library, an astronomical observatory, a botanic garden, the Lombard Institute for Science and Arts, and the Academy of Fine Arts there. Not to mention that the building itself is worth visiting. Check Pinacoteca di Brera’s website for updates about the current expositions, tickets and opening hours. Keep in mind that the Pinacoteca is closed on Mondays.

Visit Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci

This is the largest science and technology museum in Italy, it has a section dedicated to Da Vinci’s experiments and even a helicopter flight simulator. Check the opening time and ticket prices on Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci’s official website.

Be inspired at Fondazione Prada

Fondazione Prada is one of the new attractions in Milan, opened to the public in 2015, the venue is a mix of 3 modern and geometric buildings with 7 old buildings reminiscents from a distillery built in 1910’s. The place is huge, it hosts several exhibitions, a cinema, a cafe and a tower from which you can see the Milan skyline.

Visiting Fondazione Prada and walking around is free and if you fancy visiting one of the expositions you can buy the ticket at the front desk up to one hour prior to closing time. And don’t forget to stop at Bar Luce, a vintage cafe that is perfect for an afternoon cappuccino and an Instagram shot.

Milano Centrale, one of the most beautiful train stations in Europe

If you traveled to Milan by train or if you took the shuttle bus from the airport, you’ve probably arrived at Milan central station, but did you visit it? Milano Centrale is one of the beautiful places to see in Milan and also a good spot for shopping and eating. Walk around, climb those stunning marble staircases, check out the chandeliers, and stop at Bistro Milano Centrale for a cappuccino or a slice of pizza.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Opened in 1867, the gallery is a must-visit place in Milan and you can’t avoid being wowed by such a majestic building. Sitting beside the Duomo Cathedral, this four-story double arcade mall has the most luxurious shops and restaurants in Milan.

If you want to do something unique go for Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Rooftop Tour. A lift will take you to the top of the gallery and you can walk the 550 meters long highline above the building while enjoying the best views of Milan.

There is one more thing you must do in Milan, on the floor in the middle of the gallery you need to find Turin’s coat of arms. The Milanese tradition says that you need to rub your right heel on the bull’s balls to ward off evil. If it’s true I don’t know, but would you take the risk? Follow the crowd and rub your feet on the shiny balls for some luck!

Quadrilatero della Moda

Welcome to the most expensive shops in Milan, luxury hotels and award-winning restaurants, the famous Quadrilatero della Moda is the epicenter of Milan’s fashion culture and history. The shops are magnificent, the old palaces are well preserved and the whole area has a luxury atmosphere.

Don’t those price tags fit on your budget? Don’t worry, 400 meters from the fashion district is Corso Vittorio Emanuele where you can find department stores, international brands, and more affordable prices. And yet, you can say you went shopping around Quadrilatero della Moda.

Corso Como

This is the address of the modern, yet fashion, side of Milan. Corso Como is a mix of shops, restaurants, bars, and the tallest building in the city. Go shopping at the iconic 10 Corso Como store or enjoy a drink at one of the trendy bars, you will be surprised to see how lively and interesting Corso Como is during the night.

Via Dante, Via Orefici and Via dei Mercanti

These streets connect Sforzesco Castle to Duomo Piazza and there you can find shops selling everything, from fast fashion brands to Italian ateliers, and mouthwatering gelatos.

East Market Milano

Looking for vintage stuff? Antiques? Or just want to experience a different side of Milan? So find your way to the East Market and be surprised by the size of it. Hundreds of stalls selling anything from second hand to local designers, food, drinks and music, all in a former factory located at Lambrate neighborhood. Eat your way at Eataly

Think about a supermarket mixed with restaurants. Then add a cooking school, a chocolate atelier, fresh fruits and veggies, and of course, a lot of cheese and wine. All these in a building that looks like a shopping mall. This is Eataly, one of the best places in Milan to have a food overdose. You will find the finest Italian products to buy or taste in one of the restaurants there.

Don’t miss the Aperitivo in Milan

Aperitivo is the best Italian invention, and in Milan, it works perfectly. Every day around 5 or 6 pm bars and cafes around the city start serving the traditional aperitivo, Italy’s best version of a happy hour.

Usually, you pay 9 to 15 Euros for a drink and then you can eat as much as you can from a food buffet. In some places, they will bring finger food to your table, and as long as you order drinks the food keeps coming. I’m not talking about salted peanuts and potato chips, this is real food, Italian delicious food.

Bar Straf is one of our favorite places to enjoy the aperitivo in Milan. Located just beside Duomo, under the luxurious Straf Hotel, the bar is packed with locals, beautiful people and one or two tourists. Order a Campari or Aperol Spritz, an Italian Martini or a glass of Prosecco, take a sit and enjoy the food and the music. Some days they have a DJ playing and on the others, a band takes over the street in front of the bar.

Un Posto a Milano is another amazing place for food in Milan, it’s a mix of hotel, restaurant, bar and a farm in the middle of the city. Favorite among locals, they serve one of the best focaccia I have ever eaten. Don’t go too late, otherwise, you won’t get a sit.

Sunset at Naviglio

Naviglio is a unique and interesting place to visit and you must add into your Milan itinerary. You will see the city’s oldest canals and around them a bunch of bars, restaurants and a deck that is perfect for admiring the sunset while sipping a beer there.

In Naviglio try the aperitivo at Manhattan Navigli Bar. It’s always packed with tourists and locals, the prices are reasonable and the food is outstanding. Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the bar, choose one of the outdoor tables and enjoy the happy hour and dinner in a single place.

More unique things to do in Milan in 3 days

If you have some time left or if you decide to extend your stay in Milan, there are a couple of unique things to do in Milan that you can add to your itinerary. Places to visit and experiences that you can only have in this incredible city.

• Stroll around Bosco Verticale, a residential building complex that is also a vertical forest.

• Find the Flamingos in a private garden at Villa Invernizzi, located between Corso Venezia and Via Cappuccini.
• Watch a movie at Cinema Centrale, the oldest movie theater in Italy.
• Enjoy wine and cheese in one of the city’s parks, a stylish picnic is one of my favorite things to do in Milan.
• Enjoy Milan street art at Isola neighborhood and go for drinks at Frida Bar.

We are done! If you follow our tips on what to do in Milan in 3 days, I’m sure you’re gonna love the city. You might be tired at the end, but nothing that a bottle of Prosecco on your last night won’t fix it.

How to travel to Milan and get around

Milan is well connected with three airports: Milano Linate Airport, Milano-Malpensa Airport, and Orio al Serio International Airport [also known as Bergamo Airport]. All of them are outside Milan, but hourly buses are going from the airport to Milan’s train station and back.

From Milano-Malpensa Airport you can get the shuttle bus or the airport train, it’s your call.

If you are traveling within Italy or Europe have a look at trains. We traveled by train from Switzerland, France, and Austria to Milan and it was easier and more comfortable than flying.

Buses are also a good option for those traveling to Milan on a budget. We have traveled with Flixbus and it was a good experience, not as comfortable as the train, but not too bad, especially if it’s for short distances.

Getting around Milan is easy, the city is well connected by trams and metro and in less than 20 minutes you can be anywhere around the city center. Choose between the single ticket, the 24-hour ticket, or the booklets with 10 journeys. We bought the 10 tickets booklet for 3 days in Milan and it last until the end of the trip.

Walking in Milan is easy and it’s my favorite means of transportation. The city is so pretty and by exploring it on foot you can discover amazing places. My suggestion is to take the metro and tram only for long distances. Taxis are also a good way to get around, especially at night.

So let me share a few practical and effective hotel reservation tips that will help you book accommodations that suit your style, budget, and needs all around the world.

First of all, these hotel booking tips work for any stay. You can use them when searching for cheap hotels, Airbnbs, or a 4-star hotel, the idea here is that you can book the best room that suits your needs.

5 Hotel reservation tips for a perfect stay

Tip 1: Get clear on what you want

Before booking anything, even before looking at hotel prices, I always ask myself what kind of experience I want. Do I dream of a five-star hotel with a bathtub and city views? A quirky hostel with a vibrant social vibe? A mountain cabin with a fireplace? Or maybe just a budget-friendly spot that leaves extra cash for adventures?

Dreaming is fun, but the reality check is just as important. The next questions must be: What are my travel plans? How much am I willing to spend on accommodation? Do I want to splurge on a fantastic place to stay or save that money for unforgettable experiences? Is my travel destination about the place itself or about having a nice hotel experience?

When I started my nomad life in 2014, I didn’t take this first step so seriously, but finding the hotel became WAY easier once I began to do it.

But being honest with yourself is important, especially if you are traveling on a budget. If you are traveling with a partner, friends, or family, they also need to be part of the perfect hotel room brainstorm. By doing so you avoid any frustration and it’s also a nice way to put everybody into the travel mode and planning.

Answering these questions helps me narrow my options before diving into the next step of hotel booking.

It’s hard to focus, so I’ve learned to stick to trusted resources that simplify the process.

When in doubt, I recommend booking through reliable platforms. If it’s a big, well-known hotel chain, booking directly can sometimes get you a better or special deal. But for smaller or lesser-known properties, especially in places you don’t know, it is safer to go through international booking platforms.

The hotel booking sites usually offer secure payment methods, clear cancellation policies, and confirmations in your preferred language. Small details that make a big difference.

Here are a few platforms I swear by:

• Booking.com: A giant in the accommodation world. It’s one of the biggest online booking websites offering everything from budget hostels to five-star resorts, apartments, and holiday homes.
• Agoda: Great hotel deals, especially in Asia. This might be news for many of you, but when traveling to Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and The Philippines, check for hotel room deals on Agoda and compare them with other websites. You might be surprised that they offer the lowest prices.
• Airbnb: Perfect for longer stays or when you want a “home away from home” vibe. If you are traveling with family and friends it might offer cheaper rates compared with booking individual hotel rooms.
• Hostelworld: The go-to site for hostels, offering both dorms and private rooms. You can also find hostels on Booking.com or other booking platforms, but Hostelword usually has the cheapest rates and more guest reviews.
• Couchsurfing: For budget travelers who want to meet locals and crash on a couch for free.

I always compare prices across these platforms to find the best deal, which brings me to the next tip.

Tip 3: Compare hotels like a Pro

This step can feel overwhelming, especially when you end up with 20 tabs open (been there, done that). But trust me, comparing your options gets easier if you’ve already defined what you want and can afford (that’s why you can’t skip tip 1).

Filters are your best friend here. Most platforms let you narrow down results by price, reviews, location, and amenities. Once I have a shortlist of places, I dive into the details:

• Comparing price:

Does it fit my budget? Is it good value for money? Sometimes hostels aren’t the cheapest option, especially for couples or groups who can share a private room in a budget hotel.

It’s good to know that major cities offer more hotel options but tend to be more expensive than small towns.

Are you traveling during the high season or holidays? Prices for hotel rooms are higher on those dates, and you need to be aware of this (and book in advance, more about this on my extra booking tip).

For those planning a longer trip, you might consider that in some places your hotel can (or might be) more expensive, but then you can save a bit on a different destination. Having a clear idea of your budget helps balance here and there, and get the perfect accommodation without breaking the bank.

Also, you might want to check the prices between websites and travel apps. I already saw a price difference on the same platform but on different devices.

• Hotel guest reviews:

I prioritize recent reviews to get the most up-to-date insights. Look for recurring themes—whether it’s glowing praise for the comfy beds or complaints about noisy neighbors.

I also like the tool that allows you to search for a specific topic in the reviews, for example, parking, or late check-out. Things that you find important and want to know what travelers have written about.

Some websites allow people from outside to leave reviews such as Tripadvisor and Google Maps. Read those reviews with a pinch of salt, as businesses are paying people to write good reviews for them, or to give bad reviews to their competition.

Stick to booking agencies that allow only guests who have booked and stayed in the places to leave their option, chances are they are real and true.

• Hotel location:

Is the accommodation convenient for what I want to do? Is it near public transportation? Or maybe you need a hotel near the airport for an early or late-night flight?

The hotel location plays a big role in your budget and itinerary planning.

Hotels in the city center tend to be more expensive, but they are near public transport or landmarks which can save time and money. However, if you are traveling by car, you need to consider the parking cost as downtown free parking is not an easy find.

You can also stay in a nice neighborhood and have a more local experience.

As you can see, it all comes back to tip 1 – what do you want for this trip? 

• Hotel Amenities:

Do I need a gym, pool, or breakfast? Or is a simple, clean room enough?

Read all the details carefully and you might find that you can have breakfast included in the room rate, for the same price as another hotel without it.

Important things to notice: Is wifi available at the hotel and included in the room rate? Is it a non-smoking room? A hot shower or cold shower? (if you have traveled in Southeast Asia, you know how important it is to know this)

• Check-in and check-out policies:

Hotels usually have check-in time around 2 pm, and check-out around 11 am or midday. For most trips these times are fine, but if you arrive at the destination late in the night, make sure the hotel reception is open until that time and if they charge an extra fee for late check-in.

The same for a late-night flight or train. You might want to know if the hotel offers a late check-out and how much it costs, in case you want to stay in the room for a few more hours.

Tip 4: Cancellation policies

Another big one for me is the cancellation policy. Life happens, and flexibility can save you from losing money if plans change.

You know your travel plans better than me, but if I can give you some advice,  opt for hotels that offer flexible cancellation policies. Even better, if they give you free cancellation with a full refund until a certain date.

It’s important to read all the small letters when booking your stay. Hotels and booking platforms have different cancellation and booking options, and you have to find the one that suits your needs when the trip goes smoothly and when it doesn’t.

Tip 5: Reach out with special requests

Once I’ve booked, I always take a moment to think about any specific needs. Do I want a double bed instead of two singles? Do I need a baby cot?

It’s better to sort these details in advance. A quick message to the property often ensures a smoother check-in and increases your chances of getting exactly what you need.

When traveling for my Ironman triathlon races I needed to talk to the hotel about storing my bike safely and early breakfast for the race day, and, to my surprise, I always got a friendly response. And because they had time to organize, I had my requests fulfilled and in some cases, I even got extra perks.

Extra hotel booking tip: when is the best time to book a hotel?

Now that you know how to define the perfect hotel for your trip, search for it, narrow your options down, and book it, let me give you an extra hotel reservation tip: when to book your stay.

I usually book my accommodation two to one month in advance. However, when traveling to famous destinations, during the high season (Summer in Italy, for example), or important holidays (Xmas, New Year’s, Lantern Festival in Thailand…) I book the hotel as soon as I have my travel dates defined and my flights booked.

I know many people love and rave about last-minute deals, but if you really want a specific type of hotel or experience it’s difficult to find it all on a last-minute hotel deal. This type of booking is for flexible travelers, with flexible needs and travel dates.

A few more things I learned from my travels

Over the 10 years of travels, I’ve picked up a few tricks:

1. Be flexible with location: In expensive cities like Paris or London, staying a bit further from the center can save you money. Just make sure there’s good public transport nearby.
2. Consider off-season travel: Months before or just after the high season are a good time to travel. Prices drop, and availability improves. Plus, you’ll avoid the crowds!
3. Loyalty Perks: Stick to one platform and enjoy perks like discounts, free upgrades, or early check-ins. The same works for hotel memberships, if you like one hotel chain book your stays always with them, and with time you might get elite status perks. And if you are booking your room with a credit card (that you probably are) don’t forget to check if you can have any advantage, discount, or miles points for using it on your travel bookings.

That being said, I want you to know that booking the right accommodation doesn’t have to be stressful. With a clear idea of what you want, choosing reliable platforms, and smart comparisons, you can find the perfect spot to rest and recharge during your adventures.

Koh Lipe is a paradise on Earth, and like all the good things in life, this tiny island is not easy to reach. Koh Lipe is located in Southern Thailand, close to Malaysia, and its stunning beaches are worth all the travel effort. Being so far from the mainland, travel to Koh Lipe demands a combination of transport and sometimes a long journey. On top of that, many travelers have difficulty finding reliable information to book a trip to Koh Lipe. That’s why we decided to write this comprehensive guide about how to get to Koh Lipe in Thailand.

This guide has information on how to get to Koh Lipe from everywhere in Thailand, from destinations in the north, central, and south. But before choosing your route and booking your tickets, here are five things you must know:

1st – Koh Lipe is far from the big cities in Thailand, which means that you should book your transportation in advance to guarantee your seat, especially during high season (December to February). 

2nd – You’ll probably need to combine different modes of transportation, like bus + ferry or flight + van + ferry. The good news is that most of the companies, even airlines, sell the combined ticket. You purchase one ticket that includes everything, the company takes you from point A to B without any extra booking or fee. You only need to follow the instructions and have your ticket with you all the time. 

3rd – Koh Lipe’s closest pier in Thailand mainland is Pak Bara Pier in the Satun region. Four speedboats (9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 13:30 PM, and 3 PM) and one ferry (11:45 AM) depart from there to the island daily. The trip from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe costs around 650 to 700 baht, and the journey takes 90 minutes. When you are about to board, you’ll be asked to pay the pier fee of 20 baht; this fee is not included on the transportation ticket. 

4th – Koh Lipe is part of Tarutao National Park, which means that when arriving there you must pay the National Park fee of 200 baht. The fee is valid for 7 days of stay in Koh Lipe.

5th – Ferries and speedboats will dock on an offshore floating pier. From there, you will need to get a taxi boat (longtail boat) to the beach. Depending on the tides, you will be dropped at a small floating pier, or you might need to walk on water. Be prepared, wear practical shoes, and have all your stuff packed adequately. Some companies include the taxi boat on their ticket, others not, so be prepared to pay 50 baht for the ride.

Most of the travelers don’t think about this route and depending on where you are coming from, it can be an easy and fast way to get to Koh Lipe. Langkawi is a beautiful island in Malaysia, it has an international airport, and it is close to Lipe. 

So, how to get from Langkawi to Koh Lipe? 

First, you will need to get to Langkawi. If you are in Thailand or in Malaysia, many budget travel airlines fly there. You can search and book flights to Langkawi using  Skyscanner or  Kiwi.com.

There are two daily direct ferries from Langkawi to Koh Lipe. You can choose the departure point: Kuah Jetty or Telaga Harbor, the second one is closer to the airport. The Langkawi – Koh Lipe ferry costs around 1000 baht and it’s a 90-minute trip. Bear in mind that the direct ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe only runs during the high season, between November to April/May. 

If you want to travel to Koh Lipe from Langkawi during the low season you can opt for the connecting ferries. You can take a boat from Kuah Jetty in Langkawi to Pak Bara Pier in Satun, Thailand mainland, and from there a ferry to Koh Lipe. The ferry from Langkawi to Pak Bara Pier costs around 350 baht, and it takes roughly one hour. The ferry from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe costs about 650 baht and takes 90 minutes.

Keep in mind that traveling from Langkawi to Koh Lipe means you’ll be crossing borders. Don’t forget to arrive at the departure pier with at least one hour in advance for passport control and luggage screening. You will be asked to handle your passport to the captain, don’t freak out, this is a standard procedure. You will receive your passport back at the Thai immigration desk at Pattaya Beach after arriving on the island.

How to travel from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe

Hat Yai is an upcoming destination in South Thailand. The city is famous among Asian travelers due to its fantastic food scene, great shopping opportunities, and a relaxing vibe. Hat Yai is a great place to add to your Thai itinerary, it has an international airport and it’s close to Lipe Island. It’s worth checking a flight or bus to Hat Yai, and from there, go to Koh Lipe Island.

How to travel from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe? 

You have two possibilities, both of them combine bus or van + ferry. To go to Koh Lipe from Hat Yai city you can get one of the vans departing from Hat Yai Bus Station, there are about 10 vans daily. The van/minibus will take you to Pak Bara Pier e from there a ferry or speedboat will drop you on the island. This trip from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe takes about 4 hours and a half. The ticket costs around 750 baht, including the van from Hat Yai to Pak Bara Pier and the boat to Koh Lipe.

Another option is to travel from Hat Yai airport to Koh Lipe. Buses and vans are departing from Hat Yai airport at 8 AM, 9:30 AM, and 11 AM. This journey takes up to 5 hours and a half and costs between 750 to 800 baht. The price includes the van and ferry to Koh Lipe.

How to get to Koh Lipe from Bangkok

Bangkok is an incredible city. When you are done with all the top things to do in Bangkok, you can pack your bags and be ready for a long journey to paradise.

How to get to Koh Lipe from Bangkok?

The best and fast way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Lipe is by a combination of flight + bus/van + ferry. It might sound like a complicated route, but it’s not, and you can plan your trip from Bangkok to Koh Lipe in two ways.

The first option is booking a flight from any of Bangkok’s airports (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueng) to Hat Yai airport. Then you can get a van or bus from Hat Yai Airport to Pak Bara Pier, followed by the ferry to Koh Lipe, as mentioned above. 

Remember to book the journey from Hat Yai Airport to Koh Lipe in advance so you won’t be stranded because the bus is fully booked, or will end up paying more for a taxi to take you to the pier. Also, book your flight accordingly, leaving extra time to collect your luggage, find the bus stop, and to arrive at the pier at least 30 minutes before the ferry departure.

The second option is to buy a combination ticket offered by some of the budget airlines like AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air. Choose Koh Lipe as the final destination when booking your flight, and the airline will arrange all the transportation from Bangkok to Koh Lipe. Your ticket will include the flight from Bangkok to Hat Yai, the van to the pier and the ferry Koh Lipe. 

We always travel with the combined ticket, so we don’t need to worry about booking things separately, and if the flight gets delayed, the company will take care of everything. Even if the combined ticket is a bit more expensive than separated tickets, I think it’s worth the peace of mind.

It doesn’t matter from which airport you fly off, the flight from Bangkok + van + ferry to Koh Lipe can take from 6 to 9 hours. The prices can vary a lot, but usually flying from Don Muang Airport is cheaper than from Suvarnabhumi Airport. It gets more expensive during the high season, so plan in advance.

If flying is out of the table, you can travel from Bangkok to Koh Lipe combining bus or train + ferry. The trains depart from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok six times a day, from 1 PM to 10:50 PM, and the trip to Hat Yai takes about 15 hours. The Bangkok – Hat Yai train ticket can cost up to 1,800 baht. From Hat Yai Station, you can get a van + ferry to Koh Lipe.

Going from Bangkok to Koh Lipe by bus takes approximately 18 hours (14 hours by bus + 4 hours van and ferry). The buses leave between 5 PM to 7:30 PM and arrive at Hat Yai Bus Station the next morning. The Bangkok-Hat Yai bus ticket costs around 1,000 baht. From the bus station in Hat Yai, you will get the van to the pier, then the boat to Koh Lipe.

Going by land is a long journey, but it can be the cheapest way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Lipe. The good thing is that you can buy the combined tickets train/bus + van + ferry.

So, how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket?

If you like boat trips, you can get a direct ferry or direct speedboat from Phuket to Koh Lipe. Keep in mind that during high season you will have multiple times of departure, while in low season, it’s only one ferry per day. The Phuket-Koh Lipe ferry and speedboat leave from Rassada Pier and arrive at Pattaya Beach.

If you choose to travel from Phuket to Koh Lipe by ferry, expect to spend from 5 to 7 hours on board. This is the best option to go from Phuket to Koh Lipe, as the boat is very comfortable with air conditioning, bathroom, a bar selling snacks and drinks, plus incredible views from the Andaman Sea. The price of the ferry from Phuket to Koh Lipe is between 2,000 to 2,800 baht.

The faster option to go from Phuket to Koh Lipe is by speedboat. The trip takes only 3 hours and costs 3,400 baht. The Phuket-Koh Lipe speedboat departs at 8:30 AM, so you will be on the island for lunch. Be aware that it can be a bumpy trip, so if you are seasick, this is not the best option for you.

Your third option of getting to Koh Lipe from Phuket is a combination of bus/van + ferry, under one ticket. Depending on the company you choose from, the van can go directly to the Pak Bara Pier or to Hat Yai Bus Station. It doesn’t matter the route, just to follow the instructions and they’ll drop you at your final destination. This trip takes from 7 to 9 hours, prices can be anything from 800 to 1,200 baht.

The last option is flying. There are daily flights from Phuket to Hat Yai, and from there, you can follow the travel tips we shared above. The flight duration is one hour, then you must add 4 to 5 hours to get to Koh Lipe. The price of the flights can vary a lot, so unless you find a good deal, I believe it’s not worth going through the airport hassle for such a short flight. 

How to travel from Krabi to Koh Lipe

So how to travel from Krabi to Koh Lipe?

The cheapest and the best option is to get to Koh Lipe from Krabi (airport or town) is by a combination of van + ferry. The minibus will take you directly to Pak Bara Pier in a bit more than 4 hours. Then you’ll get the ferry or speedboat to Koh Lipe. If you book your ticket in advance, you can purchase the combo ticket for 1,100 – 1,200 baht, and they will probably pick you up at the hotel.

You can do the same route on a private taxi or van, it is more expensive 4,000 to 5,000 baht for the road trip plus the ferry. But it will definitely be a comfortable journey in your time. 

Another option is to travel from Krabi to Koh Lipe by ferry. There are a couple of departures per day, and you will have to stop at Koh Lanta to change boats or get more passengers on board. The ferry from Krabi to Koh Lipe departs from Krabi Klong Jilad Pier and arrives at Pattaya Beach floating pier. It is a 4 hours journey and costs between 2,000 to 3,000 baht. To be honest, it’s not our favorite way to get to Koh Lipe, as the trip is bumpy and no air conditioning on board.

You can also fly from Krabi to Hat Yai and, from there, follow the routes we mentioned before. It will be a one-hour flight plus 4 to 5 hours on a van + ferry. In the end, it’s almost the same time as getting the van + ferry from Krabi to Koh Lipe, and you will not have to go through airport security. 

How to get from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe

Koh Lanta is another amazing island in Southern Thailand, and it’s connected to Lipe with direct ferries making your travel life easy. The ferry from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe takes between 2 hours and a half to 3 hours, depending on the company you choose from. The Koh Lanta-Koh Lipe ferry costs between 1,400 to 2,000 baht. All the ferries from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe depart from Saladan Pier.

There are multiple departures daily during high season. During the low season, the schedule changes a lot, and some companies have boats every two days, so plan ahead.

How to go from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lipe

Here is another easy and straightforward route. Yay! When you are tired of all the amazing things to do in Koh Phi Phi, you can get a ferry from Phi Phi to Koh Lipe. Is that easy? Yes, to travel to Koh Lipe from Koh Phi Phi you can choose between a speedboat or ferry that departs every day from TonSai Pier. The trip will take between 3 hours and a half to 4 hours. The ferry tends to be a bit faster than the speedboats, as they only stop in Koh Lanta. 

The ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lipe costs 1,950, while the speedboat can cost from 2,000 to 2,600 baht. Three companies are operating between the two islands, so it’s worth comparing the prices. You can plan to depart in the morning with the ferry and speedboat from 9 AM or early in the afternoon with ferries from 2 PM.

How to get to Koh Lipe from other destinations in Thailand

Do you want to travel to Koh Lipe from Northern Thailand? Coming from Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai? Then your best option is to fly to Hat Yai, and from there go to the island. You can also check the flights to Kabi. You can make the trip from Chiang Mai to Koh Lipe by land, but it will be an insanely long journey, and money-wise it won’t be that cheaper than flying with a budget airline. 

The islands on the Gulf of Thailand are also popular destinations, and many people want to visit Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phagan, and Lipe on the same trip. The best option to go from Koh Samui to Koh Lipe is flying to Krabi (there is one direct flight daily) and then head to the island.

You have two options to travel from Koh Tao or Koh Phangan to Koh Lipe. One is to take a ferry to Koh Samui and fly out from there. The second is to buy a combination ticket of ferry + bus + ferry, which can be via Krabi, Hat Yai, or Koh Lanta. All of them are long journeys, something between 11 to 16 hours. The best option is via Hat Yai, expect to pay around 2,500 – 3,000 baht for the trip.

Fun fact: ‘tortuga’ means ‘turtle’ in Spanish. And a key attraction to this aptly named island cluster national park is the opportunity to spot five different species of turtles. Appropriately, you can only access the park by boat, ferry, or seaplane.

Tortugas span seven adjacent islands in all. There is only one formal building within the park, Fort Jefferson. This was a military fort built in the 1800s but never fully completed.

Among other things, it may be the largest brick structure in the Americas, with over 16 million bricks in its current structure (another interesting fact about this east coast park).

It is a perfect day trip, especially if you are visiting Key West or planning any other weekend getaways in Florida. Some visitors also choose to spend up to three days on the islands. Remember, there are no amenities on the islands, so everything needs to be brought with you.

Many music lovers associate the Smoky Mountains with country music icon Dolly Parton. The name was given because of the mysterious cloudy blue “smoke” that often graces the mountain tops and valleys.

Cuyahoga River National Park

Location: Ohio

Cuyahoga River National Park, 22 miles south of Cleveland, actually played a role in forming what we know today as the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

The area used to be a site for the illegal dumping of toxic waste, leading to several environmental disasters. In 1969, a disastrous fire led to action being taken to form the agency to prevent future disasters.

Today the area around the Cuyahoga River (Mohawk for “Crooked River”) is called the Cuyahoga River National Park and is approximately 51 square miles in size.

Several of these hiking trails used to be towpath trails for boats. Interestingly, mules were used to tow the boats to various points within the park. These canals are now disused but still form the basis for interesting routes through the valley.

Shenandoah National Park

Location: Virginia

Welcome to black bear country. This park boasts the highest concentration of black bears to be found anywhere in the US.

This park is relatively large, with more than 500 miles of trails to hike. There’s an abundance of natural wonders to explore, from rivers and creeks to waterfalls, wildlife, mountains, and caves.

Shenandoah National Park Fee:

Entry to the Shenandoah National Park costs $30 per vehicle or $15 per individual on foot. Campgrounds and picnic areas are available throughout the park.

Congaree National Park

Very tall and large trees are what you’ll find at Congaree. This is where you are likely to see the largest hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern part of the United States.

The New River, ironically, is estimated to be 360 million years old, one of the oldest in the continental US. This river is perfect for whitewater rafting enthusiasts. It offers more than 50 miles of rapids, some of which may not be for beginners, especially on the lower half of the river.

Endless Wall Trail is a 2.5-mile hike that is simply breathtaking. It winds through the forest and travels along the cliffs next to the river. The trail eventually leads to the River Gorge Bridge, a popular lookout point for visitors.

For a longer walk, try the Glade Creek Hike. It’s a 12-mile sling and can easily be stretched to a full day, provided you plan for a picnic along the way. There are also numerous biking tails for wheel enthusiasts.

An 83-mile drive is recommended for those who simply want to explore the best vistas quickly, and you can also have fun at one of the classic climbing spots along the rocky cliffs.

When to visit the East Coast National Parks?

It doesn’t matter if you are going for a weekend getaway or if your visit to the park is part of a month-long vacation, thinking of when to visit the parks is very important.

The weather and crowds can vary significantly throughout the year. Before planning your trip check the weather forecast, especially because some popular activities might not be open or running through all the months.

The summer months (June to August) generally offer pleasant weather and longer days, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities. However, keep in mind that these months are also peak tourist season.

Be prepared for larger summer crowds and make sure to book accommodations and camping sites well in advance.

Spring and fall can be great alternatives, as the weather is usually mild, and some parks have stunning colorful foliage during the fall season. 

When planning your trip consider that mid or late Spring will be less busy, and at the start of Autumn, temperatures are more pleasant.

Winter is the quieter time to visit the east coast parks, but do check for park closures and limited services due to weather conditions.

How long should you stay?

This is a tricky question. It all depends on how much time you have and what you want to do in the parks.

It’s not only the size of the park that you should consider, but also the number of activities it offers and which ones you want to do. My suggestion is to research and plan the specific trails or landmarks you’d like to visit, and even book in advance the tours you want to join. 

This can help you make the most of your time and ensure you don’t miss out on any must-see attractions.

Lastly, if you are visiting a few parks on the same day or week, don’t forget to factor in travel time between parks. The same for those who are staying a bit far away from the parks. 

Always allow some flexibility in your schedule to account for unforeseen circumstances or spontaneous adventures.

What do you need to do before getting to the park?

Even with everything planned, before visiting a national park you should always check the weather forecast and the National Park Service website.

This way you avoid any risk, and you know what is happening in the park. 

Weather can be very unpredictable on the mountain peaks, rain can cause damage to the network of hiking trails, and even flat trails can be closed because of maintenance or bad weather the night before.

Visiting a natural wonder requires an adventurous spirit and also respect.

First of all, we LOVE Bangkok, but it doesn’t mean that it’s a perfect city. It took me a while to like its mess, to understand a bit of the city’s dynamic, and go beyond Bangkok’s famous tourist attractions. 

Second, we traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, so many times that I lost count. In fact, I’m writing this article from Bangkok, where Rob and I are going to spend our Christmas and New Year holidays (for the third time).

Also, we lived here for quite a while. We spent 3 months in Bangkok in 2015, then 6 months in 2017, 5 months in 2018, and we keeping coming back.

Let’s start our Bangkok travel safety guide with useful tips. Simple things can make your trip to Bangkok safer and worry-free.

– Always carry a copy of your passport

It doesn’t matter where you are going, how long you are staying, or your Bangkok itinerary, always carry a copy of your passport with you! Even to go to a 7-Eleven shop!

I like to make a copy of my passport before traveling and to keep it in a secure but easily accessible location. Mine is always in my wallet.

Carrying a copy of your passport while traveling in Thailand can be useful for several reasons, including as a form of identification to get into tourist places or in clubs (yes, some places will ask for your ID), or to access assistance in emergency situations.

It’s especially important in case you lose your original passport or if it is stolen, as it can help you prove your identity and get assistance quickly.

– Never give your passport as a deposit

Keep your passport safe and never give it as a deposit when staying at a hotel or when renting a scooter or car in Thailand.

First, it is illegal for hotels or other businesses to hold onto a guest’s passport.

Second, your passport is a valuable and important document that serves as proof of your identity and citizenship. If it is lost or stolen, it could be difficult and time-consuming to replace it in a foreign country. And it will be a pain to travel inside Thailand and to any other country.

Most hotels in Thailand have other options for securing a deposit, such as charging a credit card or taking a cash deposit. If a hotel insists on holding your passport as a deposit, it may be a good idea to consider staying at a different place.

– Always have Travel Insurance

If I were you I would never travel without reliable travel insurance, but if you are not convinced about it yet, here are a few things you should take into consideration. 

1st – Travel insurance can provide coverage for medical expenses if you become sick or injured while traveling (I’m looking at you adventure activities lovers). 

It can be especially important in Thailand, as medical care can be expensive and your domestic health insurance may not provide coverage abroad.

You can minimize your medical expenses by going to public hospitals in Thailand (which are good), but why risk your health if you can have outstanding care at a private hospital without worrying about the bill?

Trust me, Rob and I had medical emergencies in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We went to different types of hospitals, the cheapest bill was USD 1200 and the most expensive was USD 3500, luckily our travel insurance covered everything. Such peace of mind!

2nd – Travel insurance can also provide coverage if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, natural disasters, or travel advisories.

– Get a SIM card

Buy a SIM card for your phone as soon as you arrive in Thailand. You can get it at the airport, at any shopping mall in Bangkok, or at one of the phone operators’ shops.

The most known operators are AIS and TRUE. Both offer tourist SIM cards that go from budget options with only data up to 3 months packages with internet and international calls.

Tourist SIM cards are easy to activate and are likely to have better coverage and reliability than your home country operator’s international roaming plan.

With a local SIM card, you can use maps which is vital to navigating any fast-paced destination like Bangkok safely, you can call a taxi, order food, and post all your amazing photos and videos on social media in real-time.

– Have the address of your accommodation written in English and Thai

It’s super helpful to have your hotel address written down in Thai and English when traveling in Bangkok. This can be especially useful if you need to show it to a taxi driver, tuk-tuk driver, or local street vendor, as many people in Thailand don’t speak fluent English. 

Having the address written in Thai can help ensure that there is no miscommunication and that you are able to get to your destination without any problems.

You can ask the hotel staff to write the address in Thai for you, or you can use an online translation tool or app to translate the address yourself. 

It is always a good idea to have a backup plan in case you are unable to communicate the address, if Google Maps is not giving the correct direction, or if you run out of battery on your phone.

– Always agree on the price before hopping in a tuk-tuk or taxi

– Protect yourself from mosquitoes

Some mosquito species in Thailand can transmit diseases such as Malaria, Dengue Fever, and Zika virus, so protect yourself. 

Plus, is so annoying to be itching all the time. And if you are allergic to insect bites, like me, always have mosquito repellent in your bag. I haven’t tried but saw many travelers wearing mosquito-repellent bracelets, it might be an option as well.

You can find mosquito repellent in any convenience store like 7-Eleven. However, if you are traveling to small Thai islands, to remote places, or doing outdoor activities, I would say to carry a repellent with you.

You can also wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and sleep under a mosquito net to avoid bites. It is also a good idea to stay in accommodations with window screens to keep mosquitoes out.

– Don’t get too drunk or wasted

Excessive drinking can make you more vulnerable to crime, such as theft or sexual assault. It can also make it more difficult to take care of yourself, especially if you are traveling alone. Although Bangkok is a safer city, it’s better not to put yourself in a vulnerable situation.

8 Dangers in Bangkok you need to be aware of

As mentioned before, Bangkok is considered safe, but there are a few things you should avoid during your holiday in Thailand. So let’s talk about the Bangkok dangers and problems you might face in this exciting and fun city.

1 – The Lèse-majesté Law

When visiting Thailand you need to be aware of the Lèse-majesté Law, which prohibits any acts that defame, insult, or threaten the royal family.

This law applies to both words and actions, and it can be enforced even if the act occurred outside of this Asian country. This means that you should avoid making negative comments about the royal family or engaging in actions or gestures that could be perceived as disrespectful, such as expressing critical opinions on social media or making obscene gestures while visiting a royal palace.

Violating the Lèse-majesté Law can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and even deportation.

2 – Traffic in Bangkok is chaotic

Traffic in Bangkok is usually heavy and congested, especially during peak hours. The city is known for its messy roads, and it can be challenging to navigate through it during rush hour.

Thailand has the worst road traffic fatality rates in Southeast Asia. Many of the traffic laws we follow in American and European countries are not enforced here, like wearing helmets and safety belts, which makes driving in Bangkok a dangerous experience.

If you are not an avid motorbike rider, or if you are not used to driving on the left-hand side of the road, you better not drive in Bangkok. We will talk about how to get around Bangkok safely later on.

In addition, the city has a high level of air pollution, and this can be exacerbated by heavy traffic.

3 – Crimes and pickpocketing in Bangkok

Tourist areas in any city, including Bangkok, can be prone to pickpocketing and other petty crimes.

It’s a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and to take common-sense precautions to protect yourself and your belongings while roaming around Thailand’s capital city.

Don’t flash your expensive jewelry, keep your phone in the front pocket or inside your bag.  Buying a money belt (check some here) might be a good idea, especially if you will travel around Thailand. 

Some areas in Bangkok may be more prone to pickpocketing, such as crowded places like Khaosan Road, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Chinatown streets at night, and tourist attractions.

Khao San Road area, which is a popular party spot for tourists, backpackers and young locals has been known for having a higher incidence of pickpocketing.

Similarly, the Grand Palace and Wat Pho area, two famous attractions and must-visit places in Bangkok, can also attract pickpockets and other thieves who prey on tourists.

Although we have been to Bangkok and all the places we mentioned countless times, and never faced any safety issues. 

When it comes to violent crimes against tourists or foreigners, it’s rare. Bangkok, like other major cities in Asia, have a considered crime rate but nothing that will put travelers in danger.

Talking about Bangkok’s crime rates, I would say that corruption and bribery would be the only concern traveler should have. But again, if you are not doing anything wrong, there is no reason for an official to ask you for money.

4 – Bangkok scams and how to avoid them

Tourist scams in Thailand do exist, and many visitors still fall for them. So you better be aware of the scams in Bangkok and learn how to identify and avoid them. 

Here are a few common tourists scams in Bangkok you should be aware of:

• Bangkok Tuk-Tuk Scams

Tuk-Tuks are a popular form of transportation in Bangkok, but some drivers may try to take advantage of tourists by charging excessively high prices or taking them to shops that pay them a commission for bringing in customers.

They also approach tourists near popular attractions saying that the attraction is closed but they can take you to another one for a very cheap price. On the way, they will stop in a shop where persuasive sellers will try to scam you.

• Bangkok Taxi Scams

Some taxi drivers in Bangkok may try to overcharge tourists by using a rigged meter or taking a longer route to their destination. Always keep a map of where you are going on your phone, and avoid getting a taxi when the driver refuses to switch the meter on.

• Bangkok Temple Scams

Some scams in Bangkok involve people posing as monks or temple officials asking tourists for donations, claiming that the money will be used for charitable purposes. If you want to help any institution or temple, do it, but check if you are giving money to the correct person or charity box.

• Bangkok Gem Scams

Some scams in Bangkok involve salespeople offering tourists the opportunity to buy gems at supposedly discounted prices, but the gems are either low quality or not genuine. If you want to buy jewelry or gems, research and opt for trustworthy shops. 

It’s important to be aware of the scams in Thailand, and in case you get scammed, take a photo of the tuk-tuk, the shop facade, the taxi plate or the identification number on the car door. Then contact the Tourist Police asap.  

And if someone offering goods or services that seem too good to be true approaches you, it is best to decline and move on.

5 – When partying, don’t leave your drink unattended

It is generally not a good idea to leave your drink unattended in any city, including Bangkok, as it could be spiked with drugs or other substances.

Drink spiking is a serious concern, as it can lead to health risks, including unconsciousness, sexual assault, and other dangerous situations. And it can happen in a fancy rooftop bar or at a backpacker’s bar.

For me, Bangkok is one of the safest and most exciting cities in Southeast Asia for partying, but you should always be careful.

Are you going to the dancefloor or to the toilet? Take your drink with you. And never accept drinks from a stranger.

Still talking about drinking and partying, is good to mention that the nightlife in Bangkok is safe. As usual, you always need to know where you are going and prefer well-known venues instead of a shady bar in a dark alley.

And is Bangkok safe at night?

Again, it generally is. We walked alone in Bangkok streets at night several times, and nothing ever happened to us. But again, you need to be aware of your surroundings and avoid any dodgy or unsafe area, especially if you are not sober.

6 – Drugs in Thailand (legal and illegal)

Yes, cannabis is legal in Thailand now, but other drugs aren’t. Tourists who use illegal drugs in Bangkok face many risks and potential consequences.

In Thailand, drug possession, use, and trafficking are all serious offenses that can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and even spending the rest of your life in jail.

In addition to the legal risks, tourists who use illegal drugs in Bangkok also face a number of health risks. The quality and purity of illegal drugs can vary widely and can cause serious side effects or health problems.

Using drugs can also impair your judgment and decision-making, which can lead to dangerous or risky behavior. Keep this in mind and avoid any sketchy experience.

When it comes to buying and using cannabis in Bangkok, you will find many shops and dispensaries across the city. Use your judgment to choose a place to buy, and don’t smoke in public areas.

The cannabis laws in Thailand have been discussed for months, and it has changed in the last weeks. Research before buying and using it, so you can be safe in Bangkok. 

7 – Visiting Bangkok Red Lights Districts and prostitution

Prostitution is not legal in Thailand, although it is widely practiced in the country and many travelers come to Thailand and Bangkok for sex tourism.

The most famous Red Light Districts in Bangkok are Soy Cowboy, Nana Plaza, and Soi Patpong. I’m not saying you should or not visit them, but do your research before going there. 

To ensure your Bangkok safety, it’s recommended to always go with a group or trusted friend (avoid going alone), be aware of your surroundings, and don’t wander in isolated areas. Always double-check in advance the price of the bar/club entrance, drinks and services.

And above all, be respectful to the people working, it doesn’t matter if they are in a club or on the streets. 

 8 – Terrorist attacks and travel warnings

Bangkok, like any major city, is always at some level of risk for terrorist attacks. However, the risk of a terrorist attack in Bangkok is considered to be low, and the Thai government has taken a number of steps to strengthen security measures to prevent attacks from occurring.

The most recent terrorist attack in Bangkok occurred on August 17, 2015, when a bomb exploded at the Erawan Shrine in the central business district, killing 20 people and injuring over 120 others. We were living here at that time, and it was a tense, sad and unforgettable experience.

If you are concerned about the risk of terrorism while traveling to Bangkok, it is a good idea to keep informed about the current security situation by contacting the local Thai Embassy. You can also follow the travel advice from your country.

Is Bangkok safe for solo female travelers?

Among all the questions about safety, this one is hard to answer because I have never traveled in Bangkok alone. 

Well, I have done numerous activities, going out and about day and night by myself, but Rob was always in the city. So I knew I had him near me if anything went wrong, which never happened. 

What I can say is that Bangkok is generally a safe city for solo female tourists, as long as you take some common-sense precautions to protect yourself.

We know many female solo travelers that visit Bangkok and Thailand often, and until now, we never heard anything alarming that would change our perceptions of the city and country’s safety.

The city has a large and welcoming tourist industry, and many people in the hospitality service are accustomed to dealing with solo female travelers and are usually friendly and helpful.

There are hostels with only female dorms, tours organized by females for female travelers, and you can even get a Grab Taxi (like Uber) driven by women for a woman.

It doesn’t matter the safety conditions of the destination; as a rule of thumb, it is always a good idea to exercise caution when traveling solo, regardless of your gender.

How to get around Bangkok safely?

Many travelers are worried about getting around Bangkok or even traveling inside Thailand. And it’s understandable, as traveling in a different country with a difficult language and sometimes confusing information can be challenging.

Worry no more! There are several convenient and safe ways to get around Bangkok, whether you are traveling within the city or to other parts of Thailand.

Here are a few options to consider:

• Bangkok public transportation:

Bangkok has an extensive public transport system, including the Skytrain (BTS and Airport Link), the subway (MRT), buses and boats. All options are safe, efficient, clean, and affordable. 

They are the best way to avoid traffic and get around the city easily.

You can use Google Maps to plan your way through the city, as it shows all public transportation and the timetables and fares are accurate.

BTS Skytrain and MRT are amazing and busy during rush hours!

The boat trips through Bangkok canals are the cheapest transportation option and a more local way of getting around. And it can be a bit slower compared to the metro or BTS Skytrain. You won’t see many tourists using it, but we use it frequently and love the rides. 

I don’t recommend you use the city bus because of the busy roads and traffic jams. The majority of trips will take longer than expected, especially in peak time, and not all buses have air-con.

For the MRT and BTS, you can buy your ticket at the machines at the stations. For boats and buses, you pay directly to the person charging inside. Always carry change; it helps! 

• Taxis in Bangkok

Taxis are widely available in Bangkok and can be a convenient way to get around even with the complex road network of the city. But it is important to be cautious when choosing a taxi.

Make sure the taxi has a working meter, and consider using ride-hailing apps such as Grab or Bolt. Both offer a more reliable and transparent service, and you can order a car or a motorbike taxi. When you download the apps you always receive coupons and deals on transport that will help you to save some money.

Through the apps, you can book the ride in advance which is perfect for getting around BKK in the early or late hours. 

If you are hailing a taxi on the streets make sure the driver understands where you want to go, that the meter is on, or in the worst case that you agree on the price of the ride before starting the trip.

• Tuk-Tuk rides

Tuk-tuks are a popular and iconic form of transportation in Bangkok, but they are more expensive and less reliable than other options. It is a good idea to agree on the price before getting into a Tuk-Tuk and to be prepared to negotiate if necessary.

Although it might not be the cheapest or the fastest way to get around Bangkok, it’s part of Thailand’s culture, and you will see that even locals use it. You definitely should try it, at least once.

If you are concerned about safety, go on a ride with more people or friends, it will be fun! 

• Renting a car or motorbike in Thailand

Renting a car or motorbike can be a convenient way to explore Bangkok and the surrounding area, but it is important to be aware of the local traffic laws and be prepared for busy roads. 

Remember that we mentioned that Thailand has some of the worst road traffic stats, so you need to be careful. 

I would not recommend driving in Bangkok. You can (and might need to) rent a motorbike on the islands or in smaller towns. You still will have to be aware of careless drivers and inexperienced motorbike drivers there, but the traffic will be less hectic. 

Very importantly, if you are planning to drive in Thailand, you must have an International Driver’s License. It’s mandatory, and you will get a fine if you don’t have one. You can get it in your country of residence before traveling.

By choosing the right transportation option and being mindful, you can get around Bangkok and Thailand easily and safely.

Is street food in Bangkok safe?

Bangkok is a street food paradise, it’s delicious and safe!

Street food is a popular and integral part of Bangkok’s culture, and you should try the wide variety of dishes available from street vendors.

Bangkok street food in is generally safe to eat, as long as you follow some basic precautions you can enjoy a trip with plenty of Thai flavors. 

Here are a few tips for eating street food safely in Bangkok:

• Look for busy vendors. Choose street food vendors who are doing good business, as this is often a sign that the food is fresh and popular.
• Check the cleanliness of the vendor. Look for vendors who maintain clean and hygienic conditions, such as keeping their food on ice or coolers and cooking utensils clean.
• Avoid raw or undercooked food. Be wary of raw or undercooked food, such as raw meat or raw eggs, which may carry a higher risk of food poisoning.
• Thai food tends to be spicy and well-seasoned, if you’re not used to it ask for no spicy to avoid having an upset stomach.

If you want to try street food dishes but don’t feel confident, go to one of Bangkok’s shopping centers.

Most of the malls (even the fancy ones) have a local food court with all Thai classic recipes. The stalls usually have pictures of the dishes and their name in English. 

Also, the shopping centers in Bangkok have amazing public facilities. You can use the toilet, resting areas, refill your water bottle and cool down from the Bangkok heat.

Can I drink tap water in Bangkok?

It is not recommended to drink tap water in Bangkok, as it is not treated to the same standards as drinking water in many Western countries.

While tap water in Bangkok is safe for bathing and cleaning, it may contain impurities or contaminants that can cause illness if you consume it.

To avoid getting sick, it is better to drink bottled water in Bangkok. Mineral or drinkable bottled water is widely available in supermarkets, convenience stores, and street vendors, and is generally safe to drink.

You can also purchase a filter water bottle or use water purification tablets to treat tap water if you are unable to access bottled water.

If you are concerned about generating too much plastic waste by buying water (what we all should be), check at your hotel or hostel if they offer a water station where you refill your bottle. 

Another option is to refill your bottle at one of the many drinkable water stations at shopping malls, or the ones spread all over the city where you pay a couple of cents for a liter of water. 

Bangkok travel safety wrap up

For us, Bangkok is one of the safest places we visited and lived, especially compared to our home country Brazil. It’s sad to say that, but it’s how we feel.

Bangkok is generally a safe city for tourists, but the usual advice is necessary: be aware of your surroundings and take common sense precautions to protect yourself and your belongings.

If you still think Bangkok is dangerous, I would say to travel to this incredible city prepared for emergencies. Familiarize yourself with your country’s embassy location and how you can find hospitals in case of any emergency. Also, get your travel insurance.

By doing so, you will feel safer and more prepared for the potential risks.
