2014 Ibiza Rendezvous Superyacht Regatta

Winter has been a time of reflection for the Ibiza Rendezvous team. Looking back at the first event last October and speaking with those involved the response has been fantastic and the event was a success. There are many elements attributed to this achievement; Marina Ibiza was the perfect host with its first class services, location and fantastic view point over the old town, especially at sunset; there had never been a superyacht regatta in Ibiza; the island itself in October is a pleasure to visit with fewer tourists but so much still to offer in terms of entertainment and warm hospitality; the experience and enthusiasm of the team behind the event and of course, the ethos of the Ibiza Rendezvous: to bring back the fun of the original regattas by allowing all classes and styles of sailing yachts a chance to race. A difficult balance to achieve in fact – how to include any yacht over 20m which is either modern, cruising or classic, remain fair, be competitive and safe, whilst retaining the ‘spirit of the race’ and having a fun closing season regatta.

Part of the answer comes from Jim Teeters, President of the Sailing Yacht Research Foundation, who has developed rating systems for regattas worldwide for the last 25 years. Jim’s knowledge of fair racing systems is unsurpassed in the industry, so having him as part of the team working alongside John Grandy RYS of GWM Racing, is a favourable addition to the Ibiza Rendezvous as it looks towards the future and its development. Speaking with Jim in Antigua this week we talked about his techniques, progress and relevance to our regatta.

“For the America’s Cup I worked inside the design team running tank test programs and predicting how fast each boat would perform. This lead to involvement with the handicap rules IMS, AMERICAP and ORR. In 2004 I was asked to handicap the St Bart’s Bucket. Using my experience I defined and designed a system, ISYR, to suit both luxury and cruising yachts, the challenge being that all boats have some degree of compromise to performance in the pursuit of luxury cruising. Using that handicap experience I designed a new system, the Bucket Rule, to suit the full diversity of the superyacht fleet, the challenge being that all boats have some degree of compromise to performance in the pursuit of luxury cruising. The Bucket Rule, rebranded as the International Superyacht Rule (ISYR), was created to predict for each boat what they could achieve when sailed at their best.

Superyacht racing has evolved to the point where some of the more competitive programs are unwilling to race under a rule that has a subjective element to it, but the focus of the Ibiza Rendezvous is the same as conceived for St Bart’s, so this system is perfect to preserve the original spirit of superyacht racing.”

So with this in mind, all boats that have had a Jim Teeters rating are welcome with open arms to our regatta and even if they have not, we can easily organise one. The point of the matter is that the system is part of the foundation of pursuit racing and as we look to shaping the future of the event with its fun philosophy, community spirit, Corinthian style and attitude, it is good to know that all the right ingredients will be in place to make the Ibiza Rendezvous enjoyable and fair for all.

Owners, guests and crews were welcomed to the Rendezvous Village with an Ibiza style dance show, drinks and tasty finger food as the sun set spectacularly over the beautiful old walled town of Ibiza. Situated at the end of the dock next to Calma Bistro, the location was second to none in the middle of the port with stunning views and boats lined up stern to the dock, the view as portrayed in Anna Boulton’s quirky official regatta painting.

Race Day 1 started with the first boat away at 13.00 in a pursuit format, slowest starting first and the fastest last. The course was approximately 20 miles with a steady breeze from the southwest. First over the line was Windfall, with the boats getting back in time for the ‘Dock Party’. Happy Hour drinks were in full swing by the time the last yacht came in, with the local singer Mimi getting the party underway with her soulful voice while guests enjoyed a well earned supper and sipped deliciously chilled rosé under the stars. The much anticipated fastest bowline tying competition took place on the dockside and was won by Calvin Champ, living up to his name and winning a free entry to next year’s regatta for Silver Spray.

The next day the second Pursuit Race started with a steady breeze, the course set from Es Cavallet beach, round Isla Espardel and finishing off the harbour entrance. Clan VIII came in first with the last three boats finishing within 47 seconds of each other; Aloha J of Cariba, with the two maritime students on board from South Africa sponsored by Marine Inspirations, Peter de Savary´s Silver Spray and, not quite catching them at the line, was the fastest boat in the fleet, the Southern Wind, Windfall. At this point the competition was wide open as any of the top four yachts could have taken the title. Back on the dock late afternoon there was great discussion about the days racing between the yacht owners, their guests and captains who all were invited for an intimate get-together by the committee for drinks in the regatta village as the sun set on another exciting days racing.

Saturday turned out to be as predicted, with light and fluky breezes. With much frustration the Race Committee couldn´t get their anemometer readings above what they needed which meant abandoning the race and heading off to Malibu Beach Club. Clan VIII were first to anchor and go ashore soon joined by the rest of the fleet for paella and drinks, enjoying a fun afternoon of a different kind. Getting back to the dock perfectly on time for the prize giving – by the way, not an easy task – with over 100 enthusiastic crew on a Saturday afternoon!

The results were therefore unchanged from Friday, with the overall winner of the first Ibiza Rendezvous regatta Clan VIII being presented the official painting by the Mayoress of Ibiza, Virginia Mari Rennesson. Maria Cattiva received the 2nd prize from Carmen Ferrer, the Minister of Tourism and third was awarded to Havana by Daniel Mari the General Manager of Marina Ibiza. Silver Spray was awarded the “Caracol” (snail) prize.  Signed copies of the regatta poster were sold for the official charity Asociacion Ondine and the remaining limited edition posters are now available online. After the prize giving and drinks on the dockside, the Ibiza Rendezvous “Closing Party” was held at The Harbour Club on the beach with guests dancing the rest of the night away in true Ibiza fashion, many finishing off the evening at the KM5 Closing Party – a fantastic way to end the season in style!

The goal of the IR team was always to take the event back to the original roots of regattas with the emphasis on fun, bringing together the owners and crews with some safe sailing and good parties. Speaking to some of the entrants these are a few of the comments received;

It was indeed a tremendous effort from all involved in such a short space of time. Having great media partners helped spread the word effectively so thanks to The Islander, Yachting Matters, Yachting World and Supersail World. Deckers supplied the IR team and crew with shirts and special thanks for Dani Mari Port Captain of Marina Ibiza and his team of marineros who were the perfect hosts, with full support from Club Nautico Ibiza, the Port Authority, Government and Tourist Board. In all, Ibiza welcomed the regatta with open arms.

This regatta not only has the sailing yacht classes but in the future will also invite motor yachts to be involved for the first time. Spike Thomson says: ‘The aim of this new event is to bring back the fun. The event will be pursuit racing and including superyachts and yachts from 20m plus.’

With the interest in developing a Marine major project on the island of Jeju, they wanted to meet Spanish sailing facilities that can be a reference when carrying out this ambitious project.

The visit was coordinated by CKIPM Marine Group, a company of IPM Group established in South Korea for the development of several nautical projects, one of which shall be the reference set on the island of Jeju, in which CKIPM is currently involved. The management team of IPM Group held the welcome and accompany them on this journey which included the visit to the Chamber of Commerce, received by its President José Luis Roses, and various nautical facilities leaders in the sector as representative as Marina Ibiza, STP Shipyard and Marina Port de Mallorca among others.

Once they had visited Mallorca, the delegation accompanied by CKIPM Marine Group team continued its journey through Alicante, Barcelona and Monaco, a CKIPM team’s initiative to offer a complete view of the wide possibilities that comprise the starting project.

Located in the QD7 booth located in the North Basin, will present the developments planned for next season as well as value added services intended for customers that reinforce and improve their offer within the marine industry.

Parallel to the trade stand at the MYS, IPM Group sponsors a year ACREW the terrace, which this year has a privileged location on the premises of the International Hydrographic Organisation in the South Basin. The calendar of activities of this terrace will be more complete than ever and the IPM Group will take to invite all customers to both lectures and workshops as scheduled breakfast and lunch throughout the show.

One of the many innovations that the IPM Group will present at the Show, will be the 2nd. Editing Your training program for captains and crews: STP & Superyacht ACREW Professional Development. After the huge success in its first edition, in which over 400 professionals, is already underway for the second month of October, in which new and interesting workshops, lectures, drills and free educational activities will be offered for Group customers, with the aim to support them in their professional development.

On one hand, the crystallized waters of Ibiza and Formentera, its coastline and idyllic coves along with its extraordinary climate. Statistics say that Ibiza has 300 days of sunshine a year. This says it all.

On the other hand, its dining, leisure and entertainment offer. Nothing like it in the world. Ibiza is unique to see and be seen. For fun and unforgettable experiences.

Thirdly, the surprise effect. Ibiza is reinvented every year and offers to the world new activities, new shows, new stores and new concepts of fun. It is no secret that the most influential people in the world expect to be surprised every year in Ibiza without missing one summer event.

And finally, its sailing facilities. Since Marina Ibiza completed its renovation three years ago, this port has become a compulsory stop for real gems of the sea that have changed the tourism landscape of the island. A few years ago, superyachts could not tie into any port of the island. Now, thanks to this marina facing the D’Alt Vila, who was the first one to offer berths for megayachts, Ibiza has been open to the sea as ever. And this has led to numerous organizations related to boating have chosen this special competitions as a key part of their site.

SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES

The program is tight. From 5th to 7th of September Marina Ibiza hosts the first Aquabike and Class1 Championship, and promises to crank up the adrenaline of participants and spectators. Boats will depart and arrive at the marina from their official itinerary in Playa d’en Bossa. The marina will also host the awards.

In addition, Marina Ibiza will be hosting at the same time the Aquabike free style night show to impress the curious and lovers of the sea with a unique view. Passion and adrenaline guaranteed.

In the same scenario, and two weeks later, from the 17th to 21st of September the Zenith Royal Cup Marina Ibiza is held, it will be the last competition of the TP52 circuit Super Series, which will also host the final awards.

For the second year the 52 SuperSeries has chosen Marina Ibiza because of the good vibrations left by the first edition in which more than 200 sailors defined it as one of the best that had been involved in recent years. It will be an event to be followed by the sea and enjoy browsing these sailing formulas 1.

A few weeks later, from 8th to 11th of October comes Ibiza Rendezvous, the first and only superyacht regatta held in Ibiza for sail and motorboats. The organization promises to return to the roots and provide a programme full of activities and excitement, true to the Ibiza style. Participation is open to any boat from 17 to 60 m in length.

And finally, and already scheduled for 2015, the prestigious brand of luxury yachts Mangusta, returns with the second edition of its International Meeting of Mangusta owners. Participants will engage in activities and surprises for a full weekend having Marina Ibiza as the base of scheduled sailings around the island and Formentera.

Saturday was dedicated to fun: a fast race towards the blue waters of Formentera, a swim with a Seabob, returning at sunset in time for an evening of pure fun in the most glamorous, most exclusive place on the island, Lio Club. Here, at midnight, spotlights and specially chosen music welcomed a 40 metre Mangusta which sailed past an enthusiastic audience. Guests said goodbye and headed off on Sunday.

Journey of HOPE in Marina Ibiza, a fabulous Ibiza yacht holiday destination, nestled in the Western Mediterranean

This solidarity trip will last seven months and is sponsored by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Al Jabar, who has two children with Down syndrome, and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah.

The boat sailed in May from Kuwait heading to Washington DC and is scheduled to return in December of this year. Along the journey they’ll visit 39 ports in 19 countries, including Marina Ibiza. Crew members are marine forces officers and civilians, including some with special abilities that will improve their skills along this journey practicing daily activities related to work on board a vessel.

This project began in 2003, and emerged from a group of parents of children with Down syndrome, autism and other mental disabilities seeking to raise awareness about the needs and potentials, trying to remove barriers and involving them in society. In May of 2014 sailed from Kuwait this floating project that will travel through the Arabian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea to reach the Atlantic Ocean and back, on an expedition of 210 days which you can follow from its website.
