Obama did exactly that. In her message to the Class of 2026, Obama congratulated the graduates and told them, “You all have so much to be proud of. At a time when Black women continue to face some of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, a growing group of Black midwives are taking legal action to expand access to quality care. Read more about how these midwives are suing Southern states over maternal care laws and why it matters. 

Black midwives in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi have filed lawsuits challenging state regulations they say make it “unnecessarily difficult to provide services to families, particularly in underserved communities.”

According to Stateline, the lawsuits target requirements that force many midwives to secure collaborative practice agreements with physicians before they can legally practice. Midwives argue these agreements are often expensive, difficult to obtain and create barriers that ultimately reduce access to maternity care.

The legal challenges come amid an ongoing maternal health crisis. Federal data cited by Stateline shows that Black women experience maternal mortality rates that are more than two times higher than the national average. Advocates say expanding access to midwives, especially Black midwives, could help improve outcomes by providing culturally responsive care and increasing options for patients in communities with limited healthcare resources.

One of the plaintiffs — Atlanta Birth Center Executive Director Tamara Taitt — argues that restrictions on midwives make little sense when states are struggling with shortages of maternal healthcare providers. Taitt and other advocates say patients benefit when they can receive care from providers who understand their cultural experiences and build trusting relationships throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

According to Yahoo News, many of the affected communities are located in what they deem to be “maternity deserts.” These are areas where access to obstetricians, birthing centers and prenatal care is extremely limited. In Georgia alone, some counties lack both birthing centers and obstetric care providers.

Supporters of the lawsuits believe midwives can help fill those gaps, particularly for low-risk pregnancies. However, some medical professionals caution that collaboration between physicians and midwives remains important — especially when complications arise. Dr. Wanda Wilburn — an OB-GYN and medical historian — told Stateline that expanding access to midwifery services while maintaining physician partnerships could help improve outcomes for Black women.

As highlighted by Blavity, advocates say these lawsuits are ultimately about more than professional regulations. They are about ensuring families have access to safe, affordable and culturally competent care.

With maternal health disparities continuing to impact Black communities nationwide, the outcome of these cases could have significant implications for the future of reproductive healthcare across the South and beyond.

Milagro tells the court she’s a self-employed media commentator and content creator whose income can fluctuate month to month. She says she does not have substantial liquid assets and lacks the financial resources needed to immediately satisfy the judgment or post a full supersedeas bond.

Researchers at Shandong University explored that question in a new study published in Healthcare and Rehabilitation on May 19, uncovering findings that may reshape how scientists think about aging and early-life experiences. So, is there a correlation between when you lose your virginity and overall health?

When you lose your virginity & Aging: Researchers found that the earlier you lose your virginity, there is a higher chance of a less favorable aging profile.

Using Mendelian randomization, a research method that relies on naturally occurring genetic variations to examine likely cause-and-effect relationships ,the team investigated whether the timing of first sexual intercourse could be associated with aging outcomes later in life. Their analysis found that losing your virginity earlier was linked to a less favorable aging profile, including lower longevity-related measures, increased frailty, and poorer self-rated health.

The study also examined potential factors that could help explain these associations. According to Shandong University researcher and study author Kaixian Wang, out of 145 mediators analyzed, “34 met the criteria for further analysis,” according to a press release. She noted that “frailty index, miserableness, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder appeared to play especially important roles.”

To put it plain, if earlier sexual experiences are linked to poorer aging outcomes, these four factors, physical frailty, mental health struggles, chronic lung disease commonly associated with smoking, and ADHD-related impulsivity traits, may play some of the most significant roles in driving that connection.

The world lost one of the most beautiful voices it has ever been given on Tuesday (June 2). Peabo Bryson’s — the two-time Grammy Award-winning R&B singer and balladeer — voice served as the soundtrack to some of the most cherished moments in Black love, family, and memory. Learn about his life, legacy and the songs fans know by heart. 

Bryson passed away peacefully at 5:00 p.m. ET, surrounded by his family in Marietta, Georgia, at 75 years old. His family confirmed the news in a statement that captured exactly who he was to the people who loved him.

“For more than five decades, Peabo’s extraordinary voice served as the soundtrack to some of life’s most cherished moments,” the statement read. “His music carried generations through joyful celebrations, great love stories and enduring moments of comfort and inspiration, creating a legacy that will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him and the countless lives he touched through song.” 

As the New York Times reported in their tribute to his life and career, Peabo was born Robert Peabo Bryson on April 13, 1951, in Greenville, South Carolina. His love for music began with his mother — Marie Bryson — who had a passionate love of music and would take him to hear all the greats. “

I saw all the greats, and by the time I was five or six, I could sing right along with them,” he once recalled. He carried that gift for the rest of his life and gave it back to the world in ways most artists never get the opportunity to. 

He launched his professional music career right after high school, touring with Moses Dillard in the late 1960s before releasing his first album, Peabo, in 1976 and signing with Capitol Records the following year. What followed was one of the most distinctive careers in the history of R&B, built on a voice that could move you to tears in the first measure of a song without ever straining to do it. Throughout his entire career, Bryson released a total of 20 studio albums and became the undisputed king of the romantic duet — a genre he did not just participate in but defined. 

Most people know him through his Disney work, and rightfully so. His voice is literally woven into childhood memories, first dances and wedding ceremonies across multiple generations. He joined Celine Dion for “Beauty and the Beast” — the title song from Disney’s 1991 animated feature — and Regina Belle for “A Whole New World” from the 1992 film Aladdin. Both of which won Grammy Awards and became two of the most recognized songs in popular music history. Those songs lived inside people’s lives and kept living there long after they stopped being played on the radio. 

But reducing Bryson to his Disney catalog would be a disservice to a man who was making music that mattered long before he stepped into a studio with Dion. His solo work and his R&B duets are filled with songs that Black households have been playing for fifty years and that still sound as warm and as relevant as the day they were recorded.

He told Rolling Stone in 2018, “If I were to tell you the emotions I feel most every day: gratitude for one, humility for another, and validation. Not how you think, but validation in the faith that I’ve kept in myself and those around me, and the person that I’ve managed to maintain myself to be. I’m really happy about that. I like me. And I like that I don’t feel the need to chronicle my accolades to anyone, shout them out to anybody. But, if someone were to stop and do the research, there’s nobody like me.” There was nobody like him and there will not be another one. 

Bryson is survived by his wife — Tanya Boniface Bryson — whom he married in 2010, and their son Robert, whom the couple welcomed in 2018. He is also survived by a catalog of songs that belong to all of us and will keep belonging to us for as long as people fall in love, slow dance at receptions and need a voice that sounds like it was built specifically to help them feel something true.

MadameNoire: For those just getting familiar with your journey, how did your path from professional tennis to mindset coaching begin?

Danielle Mills Walden: I’ve always been rooted in discipline and performance. I started playing tennis young, and by age 10, I was ranked No. 1. I went on to train at IMG Academy under Nick Bollettieri, the same coach who worked with Venus and Serena, so I grew up in an environment where winning was the expectation.

Tennis became my identity. I competed globally: The US Open, Wimbledon, Australian Open. Everything I knew about myself was tied to being elite.

But when injuries forced me to step away, everything changed. I had to figure out who I was beyond the sport. I had to unlearn perfectionism and unlearn pushing through pain without acknowledging it​, both physically and emotionally. And that’s what led me into mindset work. I started doing the internal work first, and that evolved into coaching, speaking, and writing.

My journey is really about shifting from performance to purpose and helping others do the same.

A North Carolina police officer who was caught on a viral doorbell-camera video repeatedly punching a Black woman named Cherrie Moore during an arrest has now been criminally charged, according to PEOPLE. Authorities report that former Shelby police officer Karson Hyder, 22, surrendered to the Cleveland County Detention Center on June 1 after being charged with one count of assault inflicting serious injury. He was subsequently released on a $10,000 secured bond.

The incident occurred on May 29 in Shelby, about 45 miles west of Charlotte, while officers were conducting a criminal investigation. Video captured by a home security camera appears to show Hyder taking 34-year-old Cherrie Moore to the ground and repeatedly striking her in the head and upper body as she cried out and questioned why she was being arrested. At one point, another officer can be heard intervening and telling Hyder to stop while attempting to take control of the situation.

His family confirmed his passing in a statement to Variety:

With broken hearts and profound sadness, the family of two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer, Peabo Bryson, announces his passing. He transitioned peacefully at 5:00 p.m. ET on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and those closest to him.

For more than five decades, Peabo’s extraordinary voice served as the soundtrack to some of life’s most cherished moments. His music carried generations through joyful celebrations, great love stories and enduring moments of comfort and inspiration, creating a legacy that will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him and the countless lives he touched through song.

In this deeply difficult moment, the family asks for privacy as they mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, family member, friend and artist whose impact extended far beyond the stage.

We are tremendously moved by the outpouring of love, prayers and support from fans, friends, and colleagues around the world. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit. His legacy and music will live on for generations to come.

The news of Bryson’s passing comes days after the singer’s rep confirmed that he was receiving medical care in a Georgia hospital following a stroke.

An Alabama woman, eight months pregnant at the time, has been convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2023 killing of a mother of five who was also several months pregnant by the same man as her.

Aaniyah Nowden, 24, shot 36-year-old Justina Wallace on July 7, 2023, in Birmingham, Ala., the Birmingham Police Department said then. At the time of her death, Wallace was expecting her sixth child with the father of her toddler, Sky, who was in her mother’s arms when she was brazenly shot dead just feet away from her eight and nine-year-old sons. On Monday, Valarie Pettiford, 65, shared a video of herself reuniting with her onscreen daughter Essence Atkins, 54, sparking excitement among netizens. If you’re new to the series, the actresses starred together on the beloved UPN sitcom Half & Half, which aired for four seasons from 2002 to 2006.

In the sweet video, Atkins, who famously portrayed Dee Dee Thorne, looked into the camera and said, “Oh kids, look.” Moments later, Pettiford, who played her on-screen mother Big Dee Dee Thorne, appeared in the frame singing, “Back together again, got the world in a spin,” from the classic Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway duet. She then kissed Atkins on the head as the two affectionately called each other “Big Dee Dee” and “Little Dee Dee.”
