Narasimha is the lion god. Narasimha is an incarnation of Vishnu. Vishnu takes on various forms to restore dharma, the divine order. And Narasimha is one of them. Narasimha means half human, half lion. Simha means lion, Nara means human. Narasimha, the man-lion, or sometimes simply Nrisimha, the human lion or the lion-like man. Man-lion, lion-man is how it is translated. This kirtan consists of three verses and invokes this lion power.

The kirtan uses a simple but powerful repetition: the word “Jago” (wake up), combined with “Ma” (mother), invokes the divine mother in collective singing.

The sound is cyclical—ranging from a calm, meditative mood to an uplifting, communal energy. This dynamic allows for both individual listening and communal singing and chanting in a circle.

Jago means “awaken/wake up.” In spiritual songs, this can mean: Awaken inwardly, open your heart, recognize divine reality.

Ma stands for “mother” — here in the sense of a divine, universal mother, often associated with the feminine power of the universe. In many mantras and bhajans, “Ma” is used as an address to the divine mother.

Shankari Ma refers to a form of this Divine Mother — a loving, protective, and awakening power. In kirtan, she is invoked to grant protection, awareness, and blessings.

In the tradition of such bhajans and kirtans, the call “Jago Ma” often symbolizes awakening — whether spiritual, emotional, or as an awareness of the divine presence within us.

The kirtan “Shri Ram Jaya Ram Jaya Sita Ram” expresses in various ways how one can see God and what relationship one can have with God. In this kirtan, Rama is particularly revered, so it is a Rama kirtan. Rama is worshipped as Ram, and Ram is both the short form of Rama, as it is in Hindi, but Ram is also the bija mantra of Rama, bija, the seed mantra. Rama is Shri, Shri means “blissful” and “respect.” When Shri precedes a name, it is always an expression of respect and at the same time of closeness. "Shri Ram. Oh Rama, I feel close to you and I worship you. Jaya Ram. May your principles triumph.

The entire mantra means: I am abundance, fulfillment from the transcendent. I am supreme consciousness, great abundance, beyond all that is movable and immovable. I am Shiva, pure consciousness, my nature is eternal joy. I am bliss, cosmic bliss.

The kirtan is characterized by a simple but powerful structure: The mantra phrases “Krishna Hare Krishna, Gopala Hare...” are sung repeatedly — often alternating between the lead singer and the choir (call and response), accompanied by the harmonium.

The chant unfolds in several phases:

First, calm and inviting — ideal for entering and connecting.

Then increasingly rhythmic and expressive — generating collective energy and a sense of community.

Finally, into a meditative, solemn sound space that provides room for inner peace and devotion.

🧘 Meaning of the mantra names

Krishna — Among other things, this name means “the all-attractive one,” “the attractive one.” It symbolizes divine attraction, love, and universal beauty.

Gopala — Literally “cowherd”: ‘go’ = cow, “pāla” = guardian/protector. As Gopala, Krishna is revered in his role as a loving guardian and protector.

Hare — An invocation of divine energy, the divine “Shakti.” In the context of the mantra, ‘Hare’ is often understood as a request: “Oh divine energy, please take me into your service/close to you.”

According to traditional belief, chanting these names creates a spiritual vibration that opens the heart, clears the mind, and can establish a connection with the divine.

Om Namah Shivaya is a greeting we often use in yoga. “Om” is Om, the all-encompassing. “Namah” means “greeting to” and ‘Shivaya’ means “to Shiva.”

Om Namah Shivaya therefore means reverence to Shiva. But what does Shiva mean? Shiva has many different meanings. “Shiva” literally means “the loving one, the kind one.” But it also means “the higher self” and “the divine everywhere.” We can say “Om Namah Shivaya” and use it in meditation.

This is like invoking the kind, the loving, the higher self within us. Or we can use it as an invocation of the loving, the kind everywhere. And we can use it as a greeting by saying inwardly when we are dealing with another person: “Om Namah Shivaya. I greet the good, the love, the higher self in you.”

Avahana mantras begin with “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah” and are invocation mantras. Avahana mantras are used to invoke certain aspects of God before doing something. It is also a Mangala Charana Mantra. Mangala means blessing, happiness, all that is auspicious. Charana also means wish. Thus, it is a mantra of blessing, a mantra of intercession, a mantra of goodwill. In yoga, everything you do is concluded with wishes for the well-being of all beings. “Om Bhagavan” is one of the most popular kirtans at Yoga Vidya. “Om Bhagavan” is a kirtan with simple lyrics and a simple melody, it is a rhythmic kirtan that you start very slowly and can speed up more and more. “Om Bhagavan” is a kirtan for worshipping the guru, the spiritual teacher, a kirtan that you can repeat especially to invoke Swami Sivananda's blessings, Swami Sivananda's presence. “Asato Ma Sat Gamaya” is a mantra from the Upanishads, it is a mantra that comes from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, 1.3.28, it is a mantra that also belongs to the Shanti Mantras, i.e. to the peace mantras, and it is also a prayer where we ask to be able to experience the highest.

“Asato Ma Sat Gamaya” means: ”Lead me and lead us from Asat, from untruth, to Sat, to truth.” Ma means “me”. “Guide me, Ma, from unreality to reality.”

Gamaya can be translated as “lead me to”, but you can also say “let me go there” or “let us go there”, “let us go from the unreal to the real”. “Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya. Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye is the most famous Narayani Shloka. Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye is a mantra of benevolence: the Divine Mother, who is in all beings, is asked to bring about good for all.

“Sarva Mangala Mangalye” actually belongs to the Devi Mahatmyam, it is a mantra from the eleventh chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam, tenth verse. This eleventh chapter is also called the Narayani Stotra because there are many mantras that end with ‘Narayani Namostute’. And one of them and the best known is this “Sarva Mangala Mangalye”.

Mangala means blessing, happiness, all good fortune. And charana also means wish. And so this is a blessing mantra, it is an intercession mantra, it is a mantra of good will.

Sadbhuja Dasa has been living in the Bhakti tradition for 24 years, has spent 15 years as a monk in the holy places of India and has spent a lot of time with sadhus. His kirtans and stories touch you deeply in your heart and you get a feeling for the depth of Vedic culture.

This mantra has sixteen different words, which is why it is also known as the Sixteen Mantra. It is also the mantra that addresses Hari, Rama and Krishna. Hari is of course Vishnu, Hari means “yellow”, Hari is a synonym for “radiant”, “the one who attracts the hearts of all”. Om Namah Shivaya is a common greeting in yoga. "Om" is Om , the all-encompassing. "Namah" means more or less "greeting to" and "Shivaya" means "to Shiva". So Om Namah Shivaya means obeisance to Shiva. But what does Shiva mean?

Shiva has many different meanings. "Shiva" literally means "the loving, the kind". But it also means “the higher self” and “the divine everywhere”. We can say "Om Namah Shivaya" and use that in meditation or in kirtan. It is invoking the kind, the loving, the higher self within us.

Radha is the most important of the gopis, the cowherds who felt deep love for Krishna. Radha's love represents the devotee's (bhakta) passionate love for God.

In this form of bhakti the devotee wants only God and God alone. "Jaya Ma Durga", a simple kirtan to worship the Divine Mother. "Jaya Ma Durga" goes very to the heart and leads to the experience of the divine presence, that's how you feel the divine mother. "Om Mata Kali Om Mata Durge" is a very popular mantra. It worships the divine Mother Kali, the divine love. Mata means "mother". This mother is "Durge."

The power from the mother of the universe (Kundalini). The goddess who overcomes all, overcomes everything bad. And supports others to create it.
The divine mother who gives security and helps everyone. Om is the primal sound of the cosmos. You can expand the mantra with "Kali Durge Namo Namaha". This means something like as the worship of Mother Kali.

"Om Mata Kali Om Mata Durge Kali Durge Namo Namaha".
In summary, it reads something like, "Oh, Kali you divine mother. You are everywhere and protect me from danger. I worship you."
As with all mantras, the exact translation is not crucial. You feel the words, you just feel the love and devotion.

Hari Om is sometimes used as a greeting, but can also be chanted. It could be loosely translated as "I greet the divine in you. I turn to you with love."

OM
comes from the Vedanta tradition and stands for Cosmic Unity. By greeting each other with Om, one is aware that both are ultimately one. The selves of both who greet each other are one. And the whole world you are in is a cosmic whole.

Hari
comes from the Bhakti tradition, especially Vaishnavism. Hari is an epithet of Vishnu and also of Krishna. Hari stands for a personal reference to God. By including Hari in the greeting, one expresses: May God's blessing be on our connection. May we dedicate everything to God. God dwells in your heart. He meets me in you.

Durga is one of the most important goddesses. Originally, she was worshipped as the embodiment of the elemental force that simultaneously gives life and takes life away.
