Die WM 2010 in Südafrika steht ja bald an, da entschloss ich mich - zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben um ehrlich zu sein - Sportwetten auf die dort teilnehmenden Mannschaften und Spiele abzuschließen.

werkenntwen.de - Große Userbilder anzeigen per Mouse-over für Greasemonkey

Ich hatte vor einiger Zeit für Xing dieses Skript für Greasemonkey entdeckt, welche beim mit der Maus über kleine Userbilder Drüberfahren (deswegen Mouse-over) große Userbilder anzeigt. So muss man die betreffende Person nicht anklicken, möchte man ein großes Userbild sehen.

Ich hatte es dann für meine Zwecke für Wer-kennt-wen (werkenntwen.de) angepasst, sodass ich auch dort große Userbilder sehe. Hier nun stelle ich es jedem zur Verfügung.

Folgend eine Installationsanleitung:

Falls noch nicht geschehen, Greasemonkey für Firefox installieren (auf den Link klicken, dort auf Install klicken)
Firefox neu starten
Diese Seite hier besuchen (click, click) und auf "Install" oben rechts klicken (oder hier direkt)
Das wars, der Affe in der rechten Ecke von Firefox lächelt. Sobald man auf werkenntwen.de geht, kann man es ausprobieren, indem man mit der Maus über ein kleines Userbild fährt.

Deinstallieren kann man das Skript wieder, indem man den Affen in der rechten unteren Ecke mit der rechten Maustaste anklickt, auf "Manage user scripts" klickt, das betreffende Skript auswählt und "Uninstall" klickt.

Interesting effect on picture from Lanzarote

Whilst being on the Island of Lanzarote (in the lovely Puerto del Carmen) I took this interesting looking picture you can see here.
It was at late evening (so the sun was already set) and I shoot pictures with a shutter speed of 15". There was an aeroplane flying by (what else ;)) and you can see its light-trail. I put the camera on a wall so it wouldn't shake. But there was heavy wind at that moment which made the camera shake slightly. This is where these funny little trails are coming from. Here's a close up of what I mean:

It integrates into your browser and as soon as you start blogging on one of these plattforms (Wordpress, Blogger, Typepad, LiveJournal, Movable Type), a sidebar (in blogger.com its a sidebar, don't know about the rest) appears and gives you numerous choices. Watch the movie to see what I'm actually about to tell you.
First, it will scan your article and match it against some Zemanta database to find similarities to your article. It then gives a choice of pictures from Flickr to include into your posting (on the right hand side). Afterwards you can add related articles to what you've just written (on the bottom of this article).
It will also suggest Tags for your posting. A list of links matching your contents is also included and very handy feature in my eyes. Just mark one or more words in your text and click on the suggestions. Voila, the link is set.

By the way, as you might have noticed, this posting has been written with the help of Zemanta. I'm not affiliated in any way with Zemanta. I'm just giving it a shot.

Debian OpenSSL Predictable Random Number Generator & Perl script

The media is currently overflown with this news. Debians openssl package included a patch that introduced a vulnerability to Debian systems and its deductions (like Ubuntu). From the announcement:

Luciano Bello discovered that the random number generator in Debian's
openssl package is predictable. This is caused by an incorrect
Debian-specific change to the openssl package (CVE-2008-0166). As a
result, cryptographic key material may be guessable.

This is a Debian-specific vulnerability which does not affect other
operating systems which are not based on Debian. However, other systems
can be indirectly affected if weak keys are imported into them.

It is strongly recommended that all cryptographic key material which has
been generated by OpenSSL versions starting with 0.9.8c-1 on Debian
systems is recreated from scratch. Furthermore, all DSA keys ever used
on affected Debian systems for signing or authentication purposes should
be considered compromised; the Digital Signature Algorithm relies on a
secret random value used during signature generation.

So it is adviced to upgrade the openssl package as soon as possible. In the announcement above there is a perl script to check whether your system is vulnerable to this kind of attack. You can grab it here:

After extracting and setting the executable bit (chmod +x dowkd.pl) try the following commands:

The upper example scans for weak keys for the executing user. This command here will scan the given host for the weakness:

(Replace HOSTNAME with a valid hostname in your local network). For me, the latter example printed:

rtorrent - A Small Howto to the Linux Terminal Torrent Client

I've been thinking about writing this small tutorial for a long time now already. It should give you a handy introduction to this neat torrent client for your terminal! Yes, a torrent client for your very own Terminal.

So here it is, rtorrent the bittorrent client for *nix flavours.

First, there's a .rc file in your home directory, that lets you configure some basic and advanced parameters for later use in rtorrent (Never forget, man rtorrent is your friend). Let's have a look on my .rc file:

cat ~/.rtorrent.rc
port_range=50000-50000
download_rate=750
upload_rate=45
directory=~/Desktop/torrents

As you can see, I want the port 50000 to be used for incoming connections (this is the port, that I opened for bittorrent in my routers config for NAT and Firewall). I limit the download rate to 750 Kbyte/s, so is the upload rate limited to 45 Kbyte/s. Additionally, I want the torrent files to be saved on my Desktops torrents/ directory.

Now that you finished configuring the client (this only has to be done once of course), it's time to start rtorrent:

rtorrent debian-40r3-amd64-CD-1.iso.torrent

In the upper example, I'm invoking rtorrent with a torrent file to use. In this case, it will immediately start downloading the iso file. You can aswell use wildcards, for example rtorrent /tmp/*.torrent.
If you would like to add one or multiple torrent files to your already running rtorrent instance, press the Enter key (on your keyboard). It will ask you to enter the path to the files in the bottom part of your screen:

The upper screenshot shows the main screen of rtorrent. You can cycle through the torrent files with the cursor keys. Here are some of the most commonly used keyboard shortcuts for you (remember, man rtorrent):

Ctrl + S - Start a stopped/paused torrent
Ctrl + K - Stop/Pause a torrent
Ctrl + D - Delete a rtorrent (Never deletes the files themselve!)
Shift + T/t - Re-connect to tracker
a/s/d - Increase upload throttle by 1/5/50 Kbyte/s
z/x/c - Decrease upload throttle by 1/5/50 Kbyte/s
l - Show logging screen
1-7 - Cycle torrent status screens

When you are on a torrent file with your cursor, you can push right for the following screens (Peer list, Info, File List, Tracker List, Chunks seen, Transfer list):

There are other things in these screens you can manipulate (like exclude files on the "File list" screen, etc.) but I will let it up to you finding these ;). Install and enjoy.

"Debian Package of the Day" - Needs your help

"Debian Package of the Day" is a website, that wants to introduce a new package from the Debian package repositories to you every day (or, almost every day ;). Something you certainly know from this page my fellow reader). Debian users like me and you are encouraged to contribute their own recommendations as an article.
So why not talk about your favorite software pack? Debaday constantly is in seek of new articles to publish. Lately, they haven't had many submissions. That's why they asked for help recently ("A call for help").

One very neat feature is shown in the screenshot below. As soon as a article is released on their website, you can track the success of that in these statistics from Debians own Popcon ("Debian Popularity Contest"). Hence, you immediately see if your article had any effect on installs (or even uninstalls) of the actual pack. The red vertical line illustrates the date when the article was released.
