Redwood forests are a really popular type of wedding venue, and I’m completely on board with that! I’m particularly fond of redwoods because I live in the redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The amount of couples searching for the best redwood forest venues in California has skyrocketed. So here is my list of the Best redwood wedding venues in California!

Tons of couples want to plan their destination weddings in redwood forests, but it’s hard to really know how great the venue is without being there in person. Why? It’s hard because there might be a cool grove of trees where most photos are taken, but turn around and there’s a different story like an ugly building. Alternatively, it can simply feel like you’re just in someone’s backyard instead of a forest. In any case, something about the venue doesn’t complete the nature experience you’re going for.

Redwood Forest Wedding Venue Expert!

I LOVE venues where you feel swallowed up into wild nature from every angle. That’s why I’ve put together this list of my favorite redwood forest wedding venues in California! And why listen to me on this subject? Well, I have had the honor at photographing at many if not most of the great redwood forest wedding venues in the state. I have inadvertently become an expert on the subject. As a result, if there’s one thing I can do besides photography, it is recommending the best redwood forest venues in California!

These venues are not listed in any particular order of greatness!

1. Waterfall Lodge / Ben Lomond, California

I wrote a whole blog about this venue here! This venue is the jewel of Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas. Waterfall Lodge is a gorgeous venue retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 20-ish minutes from Santa Cruz and about 40 minutes south of San Jose.  You have a choice from two different sites for your ceremony, and nice patio areas for the cocktail hour and dinner. A beautiful lodge built from reclaimed wood serves as the dance space. There are even a bunch of cool little 1970s A-frame cabins for you and your guests to stay in, summer camp style! Book this place out for the weekend and you have an instant private retreat.

This venue will keep your guests staring up at the incredible trees, surrounding you in every corner of this venue’s property. And yes, there IS a waterfall too!

2. Kennolyn Stone Creek Village / Soquel, California

Stone Creek Village at Kennolyn has a gorgeous amphitheater ceremony space nestled in a redwood grove. I always love an amphitheater style ceremony space in the forest! A long, dramatic staircase descends into this breathtaking space. Imagine the impact of entering your ceremony on those stairs! The rest of the venue is in a redwood setting as well! There is a paved outdoor courtyard perfect for receptions, and an indoor hall that offers even more space– plus a safety net in case it rains!

What really makes Kennolyn’s Stone Creek Village even more of a standout venue is the fact that you can have all your guests stay onsite in cabins. This venue is an active summer camp when not being used for weddings. Imagine leaning into that camp vibe and hosting all your favorite people in a place where they can partake in fun camp-style activities all weekend! There is even a pool, multiple sport courts, lawn games, and trails! One of my couples had the brilliant idea to host a pickle ball competition among their guests, and the prize was the honor of being the “flower girls” in the ceremony.

The staff at Kennolyn are wonderful, too, by the way! As a vendor I always have a great experience working with the staff behind the scenes and in advance of a wedding day. Prompt email communication with your venue and site coordinator leading up to your wedding day is always so important!

3. The Island Farm / San Gregorio, California

Island Farm might is one of the real showstoppers on this list. This venue is part of a working ranch that encompasses breathtaking hilltop views, ponds, a creek, and lush giant redwoods. It is located near Half Moon Bay, California.  You will have a magical day filled with wild, inspiring nature if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the limited dates at Island Farm. Two tastefully built deck areas host the dance floor and ceremony beneath a crazy redwood canopy. Basically, there’s a lot to stay about this special family-owned venue!

4. Sparrow Valley Retreat / Aptos, California

Sparrow Valley Retreat is a dream come true for laid back couples who love the outdoors and woodsy environments. Redwood trees tower around the ceremony deck in a fairy ring, hand built by the owners themselves. Guests may sit on rustic benches built into the small hillside that looks down on the ceremony area. Walking into the wooded ceremony space feels like entering a lush cathedral of earthy fragrance and sunbeams.

The rest of the venue is truly an intimate retreat that highlights the natural environment. Couples who book this venue get overnight lodging in a beautiful house that the owners built themselves. There are other “habitats” on the property as well! While you’re there, why not take a hike down to Valencia Creek, sunbathe on the lawn, or relax in the sauna or bathtub jacuzzi?

After the ceremony, guests can enjoy cocktail hour on a spacious deck and migrate over to the banquet tables for dinner. Oh and the tables? The owners milled the wood from their property and hand built these stunning, giant tables that perfectly compliment the woodsy environment. If you couldn’t already tell, the owners put a lot of love and sweat into creating this wonderful space.

5. UC Botanical Garden / Berkeley, California

Uniquely situated just outside the city bustle of Berkeley, this stunning venue is surprisingly nature-filled. But then again, it is a botanical garden! The UC Botanical Garden has a really neat-o amphitheater in the middle of a breathtaking redwood grove. Guests enter through a special side gate into this lush land of trees to witness the ceremony before joining the reception. Small receptions can be held a short walk away in one of two halls in a different part of the garden. Here, there is an amazing tropical greenhouse and an arid house filled with cacti. You and your guests can wander through the paths around the redwoods and through the garden. As a result, it is a beautiful experience with no shortage of photo opportunities. This venue is best for smaller weddings since the reception halls are intimate. But, you can host a fairly big group for your ceremony here and then party elsewhere, like the stunning, historic Berkeley City Club! The town of Berkeley is a 5 minute roll down the hill from the UC Botanic Garden.

6. Glen Oaks Big Sur / Big Sur, California

Glen Oaks is a lodge and event venue that is spread out into many little cabins and rooms on both sides of Highway 1 in Big Sur. The Big Sur River runs right through it. Take a little hike through the Glen Oaks property and you’ll feel like you’re really in the woods. It’s a powerful feeling, especially since it’s so easy to access. The cabins are modern and pretty dang chic, too.

At Glen Oaks, couples can book a full wedding (up to 100 guests), a micro wedding in a fairy ring, or book a stay to elope on the property.

7. Ventana Big Sur / Big Sur, California

Ventana Big Sur is a luxury resort that offers both high end hotel rooms and glamping like you’ve never known it. There is also a regular ol’ tent camping area! One of the cool advantages of this venue is that you can bask in sunshine and enjoy the ocean views by the pool, or walk 5 minutes into the shade of a stunning redwood forest. Not a lot of Big Sur venues offer both types of scenery. This venue is accommodates big weddings AND small elopements. They have three different ceremony sites specifically for intimate weddings (two in the redwoods, and one on a sunny patio overlooking the ocean).

8. Roaring Camp / Felton, California

Roaring Camp is a unique venue that offers a super FUN experience for everyone: an open-air train ride through old growth redwoods to a redwood grove ceremony site! The wedding party and guests all board the old steam train before the ceremony and are brought back afterward to party in the giant barn! For couples who choose not see each other before the ceremony, no problem! One partner rides in the front of the train with their wedding party members, and the other rides in the shaded caboose. The 30 minute train ride is a spectacular experience for everyone. And honestly, I think the train ride through the towering trees is a beautiful, meditative way to get your mind and heart right before walking down the aisle.  Couples can choose between two different redwood groves for their ceremony (my favorite is the “New Grove” because the light is so dang beautiful there!).

The barn at Roaring Camp is extremely spacious and rustic. It is located in a large, sunny open area dotted with trees.  Guests can spread out onto a lawn area with a fire pit, explore the large grounds, and even sneak over to the Redwood Loop at Henry Cowell State Park next door!

Why Elope in Big Sur?

Welcome to my guide about where and how to elope in Big Sur! Big Sur is a jaw-droppingly gorgeous region of rugged coastline just south of Monterey, California. Redwood forests and sage-scented grasslands meet steeply cliffed shores of the Pacific ocean. Even a simple drive through Big Sur on Highway 1 is worth the journey to get there, because there are countless easy turnoffs offering incredible views. When you’re there, you can feel a sense of peace that comes with being in the middle of nowhere. Except, you’re really not *that* far away from civilization because Monterey and Carmel are less than an hour’s drive away. This is what makes Big Sur an excellent destination for an elopement. Peace. Quiet. Nature. Far away from craziness of everyday life, but still very accessible.

HOW THIS GUIDE WILL HELP YOU PLAN YOUR ELOPEMENT IN BIG SUR

This blog post is meant to help you plan your Big Sur elopement so that you don’t feel lost, digging around the internet for clues! I have gathered all of this information from a combination of extensive experience working and scouting in Big Sur in addition to hours of research. As a result, you will find information about where to stay, where to hold your ceremony, when to elope, vendors I recommend hiring, what the deal is with permits, how to be a good steward of the environment when you elope, and other miscellaneous tips from all my experience photographing elopements and weddings in Big Sur! This post doesn’t cover everything though. Couples who choose to work with me receive the benefit of an even deeper well of knowledge to help navigate their elopement plans. That is why working with a Monterey Bay local is a huge perk!

One thing to keep in mind: Big Sur has become much more popular to tourists in recent years. With this in mind, please respect the land and the locals when you visit so that this wonderful place can stay beautiful and accessible!

The Best Time to Elope In Big Sur

Big Sur Climate

Big Sur has a mild climate that makes it easy to visit most of the year. The region is pretty nice any time between April to November, with chances of rain on either end of that visiting season. Many people say that fall is the best time to visit for dry, warm weather and clear skies. Personally, I think spring is the most ideal because of the wildflowers. Much like San Francisco, Big Sur can be cool and foggy in summer months, but there are also plenty of clear days as well.

The weather in Big Sur is not the most predictable. It’s a place with a mind of it’s own and microclimates that differ from one stretch of coast to the next. You can get fog or clear, sunny skies any day of the year. Sometimes there are heat waves one week, followed by ethereal foggy days the next week. Don’t let the marine layer deter you, the fog is beautiful in person and in your photographs. Just bring layers and an open mind!

I do not recommend eloping in Big Sur during the winter season (January-March), even though the central coast of California gets pretty mild winters. A combination of fires and major rainfall have been known to cause treacherous road conditions and closures in recent years. Landslides and sinkholes have plagued some of the smaller roads and even the main highway for a time. However, rain during the late spring and late fall can be mild and beautiful. The scent of the redwood forest really comes alive in the rain! If you have chosen an easily accessible ceremony site you will have fewer troubles in bad weather.

Wildfires

Wildfires can technically happen in any season, but late summer and fall are ripe for them in Big Sur. To demonstrate, the 2022 Colorado fire broke out in January after the region received a lot more rain than usual in December. The 2020 Dolan Fire (which lasted late summer through fall) wiped out a huge area in southern Big Sur, and we are still waiting for certain public lands and roads to re-open. Of course, wildfires are not something that have historically happened in Big Sur every year, but California seems to be experiencing major fires in different regions annually.

WHAT DAY OF THE WEEK SHOULD I ELOPE IN BIG SUR?

Crowds

There are far more crowds in the scenic areas and on the highway on weekends. Big Sur is a popular tourist destination, so it can feel crowded even during the week sometimes. On weekends you are more likely to have trouble finding parking at various locations in Big Sur. There are more people on the trails, and you might be contending with several other people who want an impressive photo in the same location as you. Moreover, you may even find this disrupting in a private location like a lodge, since many others will be trying to enjoy the same amenities onsite (river access, trails, restaurants, etc).

Permits and days of the week

Another important reason to consider eloping on a Monday-Thursday date is that the Big Sur Sector State Parks only issue elopement permits (elopement permits and special event permits) for those specific weekdays from May-September. Keep in mind when choosing a location that a large amount of public land in coastal Big Sur lies within state park boundaries.

You will have more competition for these spots even if you do choose to get married in a state park on a weekend in the “off season” when weekend elopements are allowed. That is because the Big Sur Sector State Parks (not including Garrapata State Park) only grant one single, solitary elopement permit per day in the entire region. For example, your permit application will be denied if another couple has already secured a permit in Julia Pfeiffer State Park on the same day you want to elope in the entirely separate Pfeiffer Big Sur State park.

Why the day of the week makes a difference with vendors and private venues

Lastly, eloping on a Monday-Thursday date will make it more likely to book your top picks for vendors and locations. Wedding vendors, lodges and venues often book up far in advance for weekend dates (one year or more), usually for larger “classic” weddings. Many vendors choose to reserve weekend dates for those larger weddings, since they rely on a certain number of bigger weddings annually to make ends meet. This applies to photographers, videographers, planners, venues, florists, hair & makeup artists, and officiants.

How to Elope

You can plan your elopement in SO many different ways. The great thing about eloping is the freedom to get married exactly the way you want to, and in the place you want to. When you elope, you are relieved of the pressure of performing certain traditions for the sake of family and friends. Eloping is intimate, relatively easy, and can be full of adventure or very straightforward.

LEGALLY TYING THE KNOT

SHOULD WE HAVE A LEGAL CEREMONY OR A SYMBOLIC CEREMONY?

Some couples decide to legally marry each other at the county courthouse and then later exchange vows in a meaningful, symbolic ceremony in their dream location. This could make sense for couples who are traveling internationally for their elopement, or who prefer the simplicity of having fewer people present during their symbolic ceremony. This could also make sense for couples going deep into the backcountry for their elopement ceremony, such as on an overnight trek.

If you plan to hold your legal ceremony outside the county courthouse, I’d recommend hiring an independent officiant who can craft a beautiful, custom ceremony for you. They will take care of the paperwork and submit your marriage license back to the county clerk within a few days of your ceremony. You will find my recommendations for officiants near the end of this post!

Marriage Licenses:

The basics for planning your ceremony location in Big Sur

The Big Sur region is extremely large. Most people think of the coastal area, but there is also a very large inland region sitting just above and behind the Santa Lucia mountains. It can take a couple of hours just to drive the coastal section of Big Sur from north to south, so bear this in mind if you are considering incorporating multiple locations into your elopement day.

The whole Big Sur region is divided up into a few regions of protected public land (including state parks, land trusts, wilderness areas and national forest), interspersed with privately owned land. You can get married in one of the state parks, on national forest land, or at one of the established lodges or venues in the area. There are definite pros and cons to each type of location. No matter what type of place you choose, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful nature. Almost everywhere I’ve gone in Big Sur is either surrounded by beautiful trees, next to the river, or near ocean views.

ABOUT PRIVATE LAND

Private venues (lodges, wedding venues, restaurants etc) can be a great choice for elopements in Big Sur. There are plenty of beautiful options nestled in the redwoods of Big Sur or among coastal views. You can pretty much depend on being able to walk out the door and very quickly be surrounded by gorgeous nature no matter where you stay.

There are fewer and fewer accessible public lands where ceremonies may be held in Big Sur (especially in the redwoods) due to overuse, irresponsible visitors, and because of how special and rare the redwoods are. As a result, some of the best locations to get married are in private locations. Later on in this post I will list and link a few options!

Benefits of holding an elopement ceremony on private land:

• Guaranteed privacy
• Generally easy to access, especially if you have a few guests or a pet attending
• Many private options offer a place to get ready onsite
• No need to worry about permit applications or park closures
• Ability to have more guests than in most public land settings

ABOUT PUBLIC LAND

There is a lot of protected public land in Big Sur. Each different area comes with different policies and requirements around elopements and weddings.

Most of the protected public land in Big Sur encompasses forests, steep grassy hillsides, and rocky coastlines. There are only a few publicly accessible beaches in Big Sur. In part, that is because the coastline is extremely steep, so the shore is not easily accessed in general. However, there are incredible, sweeping views of the coast from trails and vista points within the parks as well as from turnoffs on Highway 1.

Benefits of holding an elopement ceremony on public land:

• Certain locations offer couples an adventurous experience built into the process of getting to the chosen ceremony spot
• It is either free or relatively inexpensive to elope on public land
• Eloping in the wilderness or an undeveloped natural location can emphasize the feelings of spontaneity and connection with nature that many couples associate with the spirit of eloping

Outdoor Ethics for Public Lands

If you hold your ceremony on public lands, please do so responsibly to preserve the environment around you. “Leave No Trace” principles are very important to me as an elopement photographer and avid outdoor adventurer. Big Sur has been loved to death in many ways over the last several years, so please do your part to keep this place stunning and accessible!

HOW YOU CAN LEAVE NO TRACE

Here are a few ways to minimize impact on the environment:

• Pack out your trash (including fallen petals from a bouquet)
• Stay on durable surfaces (like hard-packed clearings, trails, rocks, sand and gravel)
• Do not walk over plant life, and respect the other visitors around you.
• Do not throw confetti, rice or something similar, even if it is labeled as “biodegradable”.
• Do not use sparklers or smoke bombs, as these can easily cause wildfires (a huge problem in California!). If you want to do a dramatic champagne spray for a celebratory photo, please use bubbly water instead for the photo and save the champagne for drinking so that you minimize impact on the local wildlife (the spilled champagne will attract wildlife and can habituate them to humans, among other things).

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER ASKS YOU TO VIOLATE LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLES FOR A PHOTO

Not every photographer is aware of Leave No Trace Principles and how their actions could be harming the environment. If your photographer asks you to do something for a photo that violates Leave No Trace principles, be kind and gentle about turning the idea down. Take this as an opportunity to *politely* decline their suggestion and help them to understand why without shaming or scolding them.

In recent years I’ve noticed a trend of photographers leading couples off trail into areas that are roped off and being rehabilitated to grow back sensitive native plant species that have been previously trampled or supressed. This is a huge issue! Certain spots seem to be overly tempting to snatch a great view for a photo. As a result, the plant life is further suppressed because the soil remains compacted by foot traffic. Also, the resulting photo can gain traction on social media, leading other couples and photographers alike to want photos in the exact spot and exacerbate the problem. The damage to the environment is never worth the photo. There are countless incredible views to be had from spots that will not invite damage to the environment. Thank you for caring for Big Sur by following Leave No Trace principles!

Where to Elope in Big Sur: My favorite locations

The following locations are some of the best places to elope, in my humble opinion! They are in no particular order. Couples who work with me benefit from learning about even more great public and private locations that this guide doesn’t cover!

1. Glen Oaks Big Sur

★ Also great for tiny weddings and larger weddings!

The very best private redwood grove in all of Big Sur, hands down. Glen Oaks is a lodge and event venue that is spread across both sides of Highway 1 in Big Sur. This location offers the most beautiful forest environment of any of the private lands within Big Sur. The cabins look woodsy and rustic on the outside, but on the inside they are modern, chic and comfortable. My favorite part of the property is called the Redwood Grove, where cabins are nestled under tall redwoods along the beautiful and mellow Big Sur River. You can plan an elopement here or even a full on wedding with up to 100 guests. Or, you can simply stay overnight here and elope somewhere else!

Why I love Glen Oaks

What I love about Glen Oaks is that you can walk right out of your cabin and find yourself a beautiful ceremony site nearby. For this, I recommend staying in one of the “Redwood Grove” cabins. There are lots of places for gorgeous portraits around the trees and beside the river. Glen Oaks allows registered guests to hold a small elopement ceremony (just you two and an officiant and photographer) for no extra cost around their beautiful trails.

You can also reserve a special ceremony site for a fee if you have some guests. Small groups can reserve the private “fairy ring” for the ceremony. It can be rented by itself, or for a discount if booked in combination with the nearby Bridge House for lodging. The Bridge House and the private fairy ring are located in a very secluded part of the Glen Oaks property, accessed only by a footbridge over the river.

If you plan to hold a larger wedding, you can book their larger ceremony spot, located in a nice grassy space perched over the river and surrounded by trees.

2. The Village Big Sur

★ Also great for tiny weddings! The best location in Big Sur for larger weddings!

The Village Big Sur is a brand new restaurant and wedding venue as of 2024! The village is an especially unique spot in Big Sur, as it allows for: a beautiful ceremony spot, a gorgeous space for intimate receptions, and incredible food all in one space. Also, The Village is the ONLY wedding venue in Big Sur that can accommodate larger wedding receptions with no frustrating limitations on the volume of music. They have an indoor and outdoor space that allows you to party late!

The Village Big Sur offers a truly luxurious fine dining experience. If you are planning a tiny wedding (or large wedding) you can count on The Village to create a memorable multi-course meal. Not to mention, the staff here are super duper kind and attentive!

3. Ventana Big Sur

★ Also great for tiny weddings and large weddings!

Ventana Big Sur is a luxurious resort that offers both high end hotel rooms and the hippest glamping sites you’ve ever seen. There is also a regular ol’ tent camping area! Not a lot of Big Sur venues offer both types of scenery. This venue is accommodates small elopements and big weddings. They have a few different ceremony sites in the redwoods or overlooking the ocean, which are reservable for a fee. My favorite ceremony site is called the “Redwood Circle of Life”, pictured below.

4. Loma Vista Gardens

★ Also great for tiny weddings and larger weddings!

Loma Vista allows couples to choose from two different sites for elopements and weddings with guests. They have an ocean view site that is *stunning* and perfect for couples wanting a completely private spot in a scenic location. This ocean view site is located on a gorgeous, peaceful ridge that makes you feel like you’re on top of the world. Loma Vista’s original garden location offers a bigger, shadier space that is great for small or big weddings.

5. Henry Miller Memorial Library

★ Also great for tiny weddings and larger weddings!

This quirky venue is home to a bookshop and lots of ever-evolving art installation exhibits. In my opinion, Henry Miller Library retains the local spirit of Big Sur: arty, woodsy, and laid back with a hippie flavor. Couples may rent this venue for elopements or bigger weddings. There is a stunning canyon full of redwoods tucked right behind the main building and lawn of the Henry Miller Library. I love this venue because of it’s whimsical, super relaxed vibe and beautiful natural setting. This venue is perfect for couples who want a private space in the woods while avoiding the fussier venues.

6. Garrapata State Park

Garrapata State Park offers a stunning beach and dramatic views from trails along the rocky coastline. It also has a narrow canyon that hides a creek surrounded by redwoods if you’re willing to take a hike there. Located in the northern region of Big Sur, it is one of the first areas with beach access when driving south from Monterey. There are multiple access points along the highway. Many couples decide to come to Garrapata for sunset portraits at the end of the day instead of doing their full elopement here. This location requires a permit to hold an elopement ceremony.

WHERE YOU CAN GET MARRIED ON PUBLIC LAND IN BIG SUR

WHERE YOU CAN ELOPE IN BIG SUR STATE PARKS (from north to south):

Garrapata State Park

• Easy beach and costal trail access directly off of Highway 1
• Known for it’s beach, coastal bluff trails and coastal views
• Permit required for elopements
• You are allowed up to 25 guests in the most restrictive area of the park, and many more guests on the beach itself
• My opinion: This is my favorite coastal location in all of Big Sur!

Andrew Molera State Park

• Has access to a gorgeous beach with an easy 1 mile hike (during fall and winter the footbridge on the trail is removed)Known for its beach, being one of the most surf-able locations in Big Sur, and possessing the oldest historic structure in Big SurHas a campground
• Permit required for elopements
• You can have up to 10 people for an elopement ceremony here
• My opinion: This is great if you want a beach that is more off the beaten path. There is also a large tent camping area here with picnic tables.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

• NO beach/ocean access
• Known for its redwood groves and the trail to Pfeiffer Falls
• Highly developed park with a lodge and campground
• Permit required for elopements
• You can have up to 10 people for a hike-in elopement ceremony with an Elopement Permit, or you can have a larger gathering in a designated, exclusive use area with a Special Event Permit.
• Elopement locations are hike-in only, and you must choose your trail location prior to applying for the permit
• My opinion: This park is very developed, crowded and not ideal for elopements or portraiture. There is plenty of camping though, and a really wonderful river to play in!

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

• NO beach access, but has access to an ocean vista and Mcway FallsKnown for McWay Falls and its redwood grovesHas beautiful trails through forest land, encompasses lots of the iconic type of scenery most people associate with Big Sur
• Permit required for elopements
• You can have up to 10 people for a hike-in elopement ceremony here
• My opinion: This park is wonderful for redwoods and the view of McWay Falls. A must-see park in Big Sur.

Limekiln State Park

• Has access to a small rocky beach (not the most impressive beach, compared to others)
• Known for its trails through lush redwood groves, Limekiln Falls, and historic limekilns
• NO PERMIT required for elopements/weddings! This is the only state park in the region that does not require a permit or limit the number of guests in your group
• My opinion: I love this park and it’s easy trails through the redwoods. Parking is extremely challenging, so reserve a campsite for a guaranteed parking spot or get there super early!

OTHER PUBLIC LANDS WHERE YOU CAN ELOPE IN BIG SUR

Los Padres National Forest

(FYI the USFS roads tend to close sporadically for various reasons without notice, so have a plan B if you would like to utilize this land.)

• There are lots of trails and land open to public use on National Forest land. Depending where you are, you do not need a permit to elope. This national forest is HUGE. Couples who work with me benefit from my knowledge about great options on National Forest land. The locations on National Forest land are for the truly adventurous.
• My opinion: National forest lands will forever be my favorite because you can really get away from the crowds who flock to state parks.
• If we work together I will happily share some of my favorite locations with you in the Los Padres National Forest!

Pfeiffer Beach

• There is no permit required for elopements at this locations. However, weddings and elopements are not permitted from March 15-October 15th. PLEASE BE AWARE: the road leading to Pfeiffer beach can be flooded by a seasonal creek in the rainy season, making it closed or inaccessible at times. If you want to elope here, I’d recommend doing it closer to October 15th to avoid the possibility of flooding (rains generally pick up in November and get heavier December-March. The entrance to the parking lot and the parking lot can flood, which means the park becomes closed to the public).
• This location is famous for the huge “keyhole” rock formation
• Parking can be very difficult at this location on weekends. I recommend coming here close to sunset on weekdays.
• My opinion: I love this iconic beach, especially since it’s the closest accessible beach in central Big Sur. Beware of the potentially strong, sandy winds though!

QUICK FACTS ABOUT PERMITS

• According to the state park website, elopement permits are “for very small, simple weddings without decorations in unconventional locations that must be hiked in to. All locations are outdoors, without any coverings.”

• The state park system allows for only one elopement per day in the entire Big Sur sector (this does not include Garrapata)

• Permit applications can be submitted up to 6 months in advance of your elopement day if you are applying for an elopement permit. Special event permits and elopements in Garrapata State Park can be applied for up to 1 year in advance.

To qualify for an elopement permit:

• You must have 10 or fewer people present, including vendors and children (Garrapata State Park allows more)
• You must not block or hinder any park visitor’s access to a site or trail
• You must not require seating
• You must not have any music (acoustic or amplified) or any other amplified sound
• You must not have any decorations other than “one single hand-held bouquet”
• Your elopement must occur during regular day-use hours, usually only on Mondays-Thursdays (sunrise-sunset)
• You must not not have any other vendors besides an officiant, a planner and one photographer
• You must not serve food or drink

A spring fire at this couple’s original venue left them desperately searching for a solution for their June wedding. Luckily, The Village Big Sur became a brand new venue and restaurant this year and was able to save the day and host the wedding relatively last minute! Somehow, the day turned out even more magical than planned. This Village Big Sur intimate wedding had a perfect setup for a beautiful ceremony and reception. Plus, the dinner was absolutely incredible!

If you’re looking for a Big Sur wedding venue, The Village is a great option! One thing that sets the venue apart from ALL other Big Sur wedding venues is the fact that they have an indoor reception space as well as outdoor! There aren’t many (if any!) wedding venues in Big Sur with an indoor option. Moreover, you don’t have to worry too much about keeping the noise down low here at your reception– another rare thing to find in a Big Sur wedding venue!

Laurel and Cedric were surrounded by only their closest family on their wedding day. The day felt relaxed and peaceful. In the morning, Laurel and her mom got ready together at Glen Oaks. They cut a sprig of ivy from a living ivy plant that her mom propagated from her own wedding bouquet decades earlier. The mother daughter moments were sweet to witness — it was clear that they shared a close bond!

Laurel’s mom helped her get dressed for her wedding at Glen Oaks Big Sur. Laurel and Cedric stayed in the Big Sur Cabin at Glen Oaks- my favorite cabin on the property!

Laurel and Cedric met for their “first look” at Glen Oaks just outside the cabin. Afterward, we walked around the forest at Glen Oaks to take portraits. Glen Oaks is hands down the most absolute stunning place to stay in the redwoods of Big Sur.

Do you see those big garage doors? Those open up to reveal a big indoor reception space! Laurel and Cedric didn’t need it for their wedding, but it would make a perfect space for a couple who wants their guests to enjoy both indoor and outdoor spaces. Noise restrictions are very limiting at most Big Sur wedding venues; it’s rare to find a wedding venue here where you can tuck your guests inside after a certain hour and keep the loud party going. Having an indoor space is also a fantastic advantage with the very unpredictable weather in Big Sur.

In California, a redwood forest elopement is one of the most peaceful and inspiring ways to get married. Jenna and Kristen traveled from Los Angeles to Big Sur to do this on a beautiful fall day. After months of planning with them, I met them in person for the first time as they helped each other get ready. The couple rented a cute little cabin at Glen Oaks. From there, we could walk right out the front door and into the forest, which makes a wedding day even easier!

The Ceremony

After Jenna and Kristen were ready, we wandered into the private wooded area to choose a ceremony spot that felt right for them. They read their personal vows to each other and exchanged rings. Zia the officiant created a powerful ceremony that incorporated and acknowledged the powerful environment we were in. The redwoods create a beautiful symbol of strong and lasting love. Not only that, but the scent of the forest is intoxicating! As a result, in the redwoods you feel part of something bigger– similarly to how it can feel to be in a loving partnership.

After the ceremony, the couple wandered the trails while I followed. We stopped for them to have their first dance in a a beautiful beam of light. Later, they found their way to the river to relax and skip rocks.

The Coast

One of the incredible features of California is being able to visit entirely different looking landscapes within relatively short periods of time. The three of us drove out of the woods and up the coast to a couple of gorgeous stops. Every time I visit these places the light and the weather is different, which keeps every experience feeling magical and wild!

The last stop of the day was a beach for a dinner picnic. Jenna and Kristen packed themselves a gorgeous spread to enjoy on this remote and rugged beach. That way, they could pace the evening as they pleased and enjoy Big Sur’s gorgeous nature as much as possible.

Sunset began and it created a stunning misty landscape that resembled a watercolor painting. Jenna and Kristen ran around exploring and savoring the light.

Evergreen Lodge Yosemite comes alive with fall color in late October and early November. It is a dreamy setting for a fall wedding, made complete with crisp air and the piney scent of the mountains. And so, these two Alaska natives found their perfect wedding location in the wilder parts of California.

My absolute favorite part of this wedding day was when Lindsay ziplined into her first look with Griff! This bride was all about having maximum fun and laughter.

Equally amazing was hearing the speeches that were given at Lindsay and Griff’s reception. I never mind one bit when speeches run long or plentiful. The stories shared brought out laughter, tears, and universal admiration for how each partner shows up in their community as wonderful people. This is always the time when I get to learn SO much about how incredible a couple is.

Evergreen Lodge

Evergreen Lodge is a big piece of property situated just outside Yosemite National Park. This venue has beautifully rustic cabins sprinkled throughout the woodsy setting. It’s complete with great design, delicious food, and gorgeous scenery. It’s the type of place that I dream about spending a cold fall weekend.

I highly recommend Evergreen Lodge for your destination wedding! You’ll be in your element here if you love nature and cozy cabins. All your guests can stay on property and enjoy the beautiful destination in addition to your wedding. And with Yosemite National Park being so close, you can always dash over their for fun or for portraits with your photographer!

Check out this Glen Oaks Bridge House wedding in Big Sur if you’re looking for a great venue to get married in the redwoods.

Glen Oaks Big Sur is an incredible resort and lodge off of highway 1. They offer cabins and motor lodge style rooms. The lower part of the property is in a redwood forest next to the Big Sur River.

Massis and Amanda held their intimate wedding at the Bridge House and Fairy Ring at Glen Oaks Big Sur. They had a small, 4-person guest list of their closest family members. The couple lodged in the beautiful Bridge House, and held their ceremony just steps away in the Fairy Ring. A private chef came to prepare an intimate dinner reception for them in the Bridge House later that evening.

The Bridge House at Glen Oaks

The Bridge House is a gorgeous, modern house nestled in the redwoods at Glen Oaks Big Sur. It is my personal favorite lodging at Glen Oaks because it is spacious, private and has great view of the forest. The Bridge House is the largest and nicest accommodation on the property. This lodging offers a lot of privacy because it is on the other side of the river from most of the other lodgings. Additionally, it is only accessed by a 150 foot suspension bridge over the river.

Tall windows let in light and views of the giant trees on either side of the house. A full kitchen, living room and dining room give plenty of space for gathering with friends and family. There is a fire ring in the front with several lounge chairs circled around it. A private sauna and deck sit just behind the Bridge House.

There are two small separate lodgings a stone’s throw away from the Bridge House if you need extra accommodations. Several more cabins of varying size are located across the river, a short walk away.

Many couples decide to rent the Bridge House for their wedding lodging. It is conveniently just steps away from a fantastic ceremony space called the Fairy Ring, which is a ring of redwood trees.

A ceremony space called the Fairy Ring is located just steps away from the Bridge House. The Fairy Ring is a circle of huge redwoods. It provides just enough space for a small group of people to gather!

The Fairy Ring is typically offered for a discounted rental fee when couples rent the Bridge House as well. Please contact Glen Oaks about pricing and guest capacity.

Wedding preparation at Glen Oaks Bridge House

Below is the full wedding day story of Massis and Amanda.

Because Massis and Amanda chose not to see each other before the ceremony, they prepared in different rooms of the Bridge House. Nervous feeling ran high as they put on their clothing and finishing touches. Amanda finished up her self-made bouquet with the help of her mom. Meanwhile, Massis’s mom placed his grandmother’s handmade lace pocket square in his suit downstairs.

Massis lit up when he saw Amanda turn the corner and walk into the Fairy Ring for the ceremony. Naomi led a beautifully moving ceremony for the couple that included sharing some of their love story.

Massis’s father shared with me that their culture tends to hold enormous, lively weddings with many guests. But these two decided to go their own way and hold a tiny wedding in nature. “I don’t like being the center of attention,” Amanda told me later that day. Even if we were not in the middle of a pandemic, they still would have chosen to hold such an intimate wedding day like this.

The group gathered inside the Bridge House after the ceremony for a toast with champagne and apple cider. Everyone took a bit of a break to relax!

Redwood Forest Wedding Portraits at Glen Oaks Big Sur

Massis, Amanda and I went out to take some portraits around the Glen Oaks property. We explored the trails under giant redwood trees and chased the gold light beams. I couldn’t have asked for more beautiful lighting at the stunning location. The best part? We had the whole place to ourselves!

Glen Oaks is my favorite place in Big Sur to take portraits in the redwoods. That is because this property has some of the largest trees in the region, and it is away from the crowds! Moreover, the way light trickles down from the trees here is simply stunning.

Coastal Wedding Portraits in Big Sur

For the remainder of our time together, the three of us drove up the coast to take some photos by the ocean. “Yay, fog!” Amanda said when we stepped onto the coastal path. She had been hoping for dramatic foggy weather, which is something I love, too!

In conclusion, we all said goodbye when the sun disappeared. Amanda and Massis traveled back to Glen Oaks to have their intimate dinner party at the Bridge House. A private chef from Sea Stars cooked for them so they could all relax and enjoy the evening as much as possible!

This unexpected feature marks the second year in a row that Insider has named me for the annual piece.

The photo featured is of Christine and Eric, who eloped with me in spring 2021. Christine and Eric were married in the redwoods at Glen Oaks in Big Sur, California. Afterward, we headed up the coast to embark on their first hike as a married couple. They tackled a fun hike through a canyon of redwoods and creek crossings, then ended the day enjoying a cloudy sunset by the ocean.

Photography is not the only service I offer for elopements. I am actually an elopement guide as well, which means I help couples plan their day in advance. Together, we discuss locations for ceremony and portraits, adventure ideas, vendor recommendations and a customized day-of timeline. Eloping can feel daunting if you want to travel somewhere that may be a bit unfamiliar, which is why I am here to offer my expertise!

One of the best parts of working with Christine and Eric was witnessing their adventurous spirits. Above is a photo of the couple walking out to a rocky point after scaling down a steep cliff in full wedding garb! Their courage and curiosity is inspiring to me. “This is something we would normally do when exploring, so why not?!” they told me before hoisting skirts and pant legs to make the descent.

Have you heard of this wedding venue in the Santa Cruz Mountains? Sparrow Valley Retreat is one of the best wedding venues in Santa Cruz County. Nestled in the redwoods on top of a ridge, this gorgeous retreat is perfect for outdoor weddings big and small. I have photographed at A LOT of venues, including most of the redwood grove wedding venues in California. I can tell you from experience that Sparrow Valley Retreat is simply incredible.

A Rustic Retreat for Laid Back Nature Lovers

Sparrow Valley Retreat is a dream come true for laid back couples who love the outdoors and woodsy environments. Redwood trees tower around the ceremony deck in a fairy ring, hand built by the owners themselves. Guests may sit on rustic benches built into the small hillside that looks down on the ceremony area. Walking into the wooded ceremony space feels like entering a lush cathedral of earthy fragrance and sunbeams.

The rest of the venue is truly an intimate retreat that highlights the natural environment. Couples who book this venue get overnight lodging in a beautiful house that the owners built themselves. There are other “habitats” on the property as well, and more being built as I type! While you’re there, why not take a hike down to Valencia Creek, sunbathe on the lawn, or relax in the sauna or bathtub jacuzzi?

After the ceremony, guests can enjoy cocktail hour on a spacious deck and migrate over to the banquet tables for dinner. Oh and the tables? The owners milled the wood from their property and hand built these stunning, giant tables that perfectly compliment the woodsy environment. If you couldn’t already tell, the owners put a lot of love and sweat into creating this wonderful space.

Originally this venue was only serving intimate weddings, but soon they will be accommodating large weddings too! Sparrow Valley Retreat is still a young venue, but it soared in popularity in 2021. So if you are curious, be sure to snag a tour and a wedding date before they book up!

First of all, let’s talk about what makes Santa Cruz and the surrounding area really special!

It is also home to the University of California, Santa Cruz, a premier research institution and educational hub, as well as the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an oceanfront amusement park operating continuously since 1907.

Santa Cruz and the surrounding county has dank redwood forests. We have incredible beaches. We have amazingly refreshing coastal weather that is rarely too hot nor too cold. Fun fact: Santa Cruz is on a sun belt in Monterey Bay, meaning that we get a lot more sun, more warm weather and less fog than our neighbors to the north (Half Moon Bay) and south (Monterey). It’s an amazing place for a getaway whether you are from far away or just “over the hill”.  If you want to make a whole weekend out of your wedding, you’ll have endless beauty to enjoy and endless activities for your family and guests to be entertained with.

Redwood Forest Wedding Paradise

Real fast, let’s dig a little deeper into the situation about the redwood forests: WE HAVE SO MANY BREATHTAKING FOREST AREAS AND VENUES. Seriously. Big Basin State Park, Nisene Marks State Park, Henry Cowell State Park, Pogonip, and Land of Medicine Buddha to name a few. Not only are these great places to explore (or maybe even elope in) but these wooded areas create an amazing backdrop for portraits. Many people who come to visit our awesome town only associate Santa Cruz with the beach but I think the forests are the best kept secret.

1. Sparrow Valley Retreat in Aptos, California

Vibe: Intimate woodsy retreat with cathedral-like redwood ceremony space

Sparrow Valley Retreat is one of Santa Cruz County’s newer wedding venues. It very quickly became one of my all time favorites!

Redwood trees tower around the ceremony deck in a fairy ring, hand built by the owners themselves. Guests may sit on rustic benches built into the small hillside that looks down on the ceremony area. Walking into the wooded ceremony space feels like entering a lush cathedral of earthy fragrance and sunbeams.

The rest of the venue is truly an intimate retreat that highlights the natural environment. Couples who book this venue get overnight lodging in a beautiful house that the owners built themselves. There are other “habitats” on the property as well, and more being built as I type! While you’re there, why not take a hike down to Valencia Creek, sunbathe on the lawn, or relax in the sauna or bathtub jacuzzi?

2. Roaring Camp in Felton, California

Vibe: Old-timey steam train, sunny park-like reception area with giant barn, spectacular redwood grove ceremony options, experience-driven

Roaring Camp is a unique, rustic venue that combines your wedding ceremony with a train ride adventure. Wedding party and guests board a 100 year old steam train to journey through a beautiful old-growth redwood forest up to the ceremony location among the trees. The reception happens back down by the train depot in a gorgeous, enormous barn. The grounds of the venue are huge and have a park-like feel. If you’re looking for a way to offer your guests a truly unique experience, this venue has it built in. There are a few different ceremony spots to choose from and I personally recommend the “New Grove” because of the beautiful lighting conditions it has in the afternoon!

3. UCSC Cowell Ranch Hay Barn in Santa Cruz, California

Vibe: Modern barn on a sunny hillside near town, modestly sized grounds but beautiful open surroundings

The UCSC Cowell Ranch Hay Barn is a gorgeous new barn right here in Santa Cruz on the westside of town. It sits on a sunny hillside on the front edge of the famously beautiful UC Santa Cruz campus. Just up the road are stunning views of the Monterey bay, the campus farm, and lush green redwoods (hint– beautiful, accessible places for portraits!). I especially love this venue in the springtime when the surrounding fields are still green! The barn is spacious and conveniently close to all the hotels your guests may be staying in. There isn’t a lot of natural shade around the outside of the venue,  but the barn itself creates a nice shady backdrop for an afternoon ceremony. Couples can also rent out a portion of the adjacent farm for their event too, which is a a walk away. The barn itself is beautiful and modern with plenty of space for dinner and dancing.

4. Waterfall Lodge in Ben Lomond, California

Vibe: Elegant and peaceful redwood forest retreat with an upscale feel, lodging options

The Waterfall Lodge is a newly transformed venue with complete summer camp vibes! A gorgeous lodge made of salvaged wood serves as a dance zone. Receptions and ceremonies are held outside beneath huge redwoods. A patio with a fire pit is the perfect spot for cocktail hour. One of my favorite aspects of this venue are the little A-frame cabins dotting the property. They were built in the 70s and are the perfect way to bunk up all your tipsy friends after the party. Larger, nicer cottages are also available for guests who’d like more room to spread out.  I love this venue so much that I held my own wedding here in 2019! 5. Fern River Resort in Felton, California

Vibe: Laid-Back, casual campy redwood paradise with a creek, outdoor ceremony & reception areas and lodging

Fern River Resort is a super special wedding venue  tucked away in the redwoods of Felton. First of all, don’t interpret the word “resort” as the fancy kind with room service and a swim-up bar. It is more of a summer camp style resort– the kind of place  where you might have a big outdoorsy family reunion. You can rent this whole place out for a weekend retreat and have your wedding among super tall redwoods and a creek!  There are lots of great places to get married among trees in Northern California, but this one has a uniquely gorgeous setting.  I seriously don’t know why, but it seems like not many people (even wedding vendors) are aware of this cool little Santa Cruz mountain venue.

Sidenote: where else can you set up a photo booth inside the base of a giant old tree?

6. Rancho Soquel in Soquel, California / An Exclusive Venue of  “The Wedding Connection” 

Vibe: Outdoor Barn Venue, Sunny, Lush gardens with an intimate ranch feel

Rancho Soquel is part of a network of venues run by a local wedding planning company called “The Wedding Connection“. This particular venue is for you if you want an outdoor wedding somewhere sunny, gorgeously landscaped with a ranch vibe.  The grounds are blooming with amazing gardens. You can follow paths throughout the grounds that wind through large oaks and over a creek. Keep walking and you will find yourself in a number of different little hidden, charming alcoves, each as picturesque as the last. The ceremony and dinner reception area is on a large grassy area in front of an amazing wooden barn. There are also other zones for cocktail hour and a dance floor.

Something I love about this venue is that you can wander around and explore, play bocce ball, admire horses in the pasture, and generally have a mini vacation just being here for the day. There is plenty of space to spread out, too.

Sidenote: why not take advantage of the space and hire the local photo booth company, the Booth Bus to bring some fun into the post-dinner reception?!

7. Ampitheatre of the Redwoods at Pema Osel Ling in Corralitos, California

Vibe: Serene redwood paradise, redwood amphitheater for ceremonies, outdoor and indoor reception spaces, camping cabins and yurt lodging for guests, casual and campy

Amipitheatre of the Redwoods is part of a Buddhist retreat center called Pema Osel Ling, so it’s tucked away in the most peaceful, quiet neck of the woods. This venue is a really down to earth, laid back kind of place for couples who want something made special by outdoor splendor without any frivolity. The feel of the grounds and the kind energy of the staff  make it feel like you’re having a backyard wedding at a good family friend’s place in a spectacular forest. The property is pretty huge and you or your guests can easily go exploring on a fun hike.  The drive here is a fun and beautiful adventure on its own! Coming from highway 1, you follow a few backcountry roads that wind gently around past orchards and gorgeous forests. If you want a place to host all your friends overnight with a low-key and peaceful camp vibe, this is the spot.

Sidenote: The coordinators at Amphitheatre of the Redwoods are SO GREAT. Eden will take care of you in every possible way with a genuine smile on her face.

8. Seascape Resort in Aptos, California

Vibe: Coastal resort hotel, outdoor ceremony location with amazing ocean views, indoor reception spaces

Seascape resort has a totally different vibe than the venues above.  This resort venue is situated on a beautiful bluff overlooking the ocean. Ceremonies are held outside in the most picturesque spot on the property. There are a few indoor reception options depending on the size of your group- each with a balcony overlooking great views. If you are looking for a classic and beautiful place to get married that isn’t too tucked away from civilization, this is it. The resort has plenty of hotel-style rooms, condos, a restaurant, hot tub and beach access. It is the closest you can get to a beach wedding venue in this county.

Sidenote: something I really love about this venue is that you can hold an after party beach bonfire with your guests!

9. Sand Rock Farm Bed and Breakfast in Aptos, California

Vibe: Hidden Historic Farm with Lush Gardens and Rustic Charm

 Sand Rock Farm transports you to another world with its seclusion and lush gardens. The B&B itself is an 1800s building that has been astonishingly well-kept. The grounds are expansive with winding paths through green areas. Sand Rock offers a variety of spaces for ceremony and reception sites, depending on your taste.

My favorite part of this venue is the Barrel Room, which is actually not a “room” at all–  anymore at least! An arched doorway covered in ivy leads into the space and evokes a “secret garden” feel. Inside is an open air courtyard dripping with ivy and rustic charm.  Bistro lights are strung across the space which make it feel more magical toward the evening.  When I walked into it I was immediately reminded of the incredible Haiku Mill on Maui (a historic abandoned sugar mill that is now an open air jungle wedding heaven). The Barrel Room used to store wine barrels, but now it’s used as ceremony and reception space for weddings.

Sand Rock Farm is owned by an extremely sweet couple who offer a variety of wedding packages. Jen is a veteran wedding planner and Derek is a chef. Together they know how to give a great getaway experience for large and small weddings alike.

In early summer, Lina and Danny were married surrounded by their closest friends. They lodged and celebrated at the beautiful and historic Sand Rock Farm in Aptos, California.

Lina got ready with the help of her childhood friend, whom she knew from growing up in Germany. Trinh helped her with her hair and makeup, while Danny got ready in the next room. Outside, Lina’s and Danny’s friends helped set up the reception area, where they planned to have an intimate dinner later that evening.

As Lina got ready, she told me that she designed and sewed her own wedding dress. She had just graduated from fashion school and spend the last 2 weeks making it. Her dress was so stunning! I couldn’t wait to see Danny’s reaction to Lina and to her dress.

I followed Lina as she walked through the garden to find Danny. His reaction to seeing her for the first time that day was priceless. His jaw dropped as he stared, speechless, for several seconds. The two laughed and embraced while Trinh and I watched. I’m not sure about Trinh, but I was on the verge of tearing up watching!

The ceremony took place in a secret enchanted forest location. Powerful vows were made to each other, which made Danny and several guests tear up. “Falling for you wasn’t falling at all. It was more like walking into a house and knowing it was home,” were some of Lina’s words.

Some of the guests at the reception hadn’t seen each other since before the pandemic, and it was a sweet reunion to witness. My favorite part of the reception was watching Lina and Danny create a mini champagne tower!
