20th Annual First Freedom Student Competition

Please forward to all High School Social Studies and ELA Teachers and Curriculum Supervisors, Media/Librarians, Guidance Counselors.

The First Freedom Center announces the 20th annual First Freedom Student Competition. This national essay and video contest offers 9th - 12th grade students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the First Amendment and the history and implementation of freedom of religion and conscience in American democracy and the world today. Students then present their evaluation in written essay or video format. This year's topic introduces students to George Washington's famous Letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island of 1790. Students must register online on or before Monday, November 12, 2012, and the postmark deadline for mailing the essay or video with its accompanying entry materials is Monday, November 26, 2012. *Make plans to travel to Woodlawn on Friday to support the Tide. The game will be held at Lee Hedges Stadium (near Captain Shreve High School). Game time is 7:00 PM.

*We will have a pep rally beginning at 3:00 PM on Friday in the gym.

*JUNIORS: Stan will be back on Friday, October 12^th during both lunch shifts in order to take payments or answer any questions you may have.

*Homecoming tickets will be going on sale Wednesday, October 10^th- Friday, October 19^th during BOTH lunch shifts. The cost for each ticket is $10.00. The theme for this year’s dance is MHS Masquerade. It will be here in the cafeteria on October 20^th from 7:00pm until 10:00pm. Tickets will NOT be sold the day of the dance OR at the door! Be prepared by getting your debts paid TODAY! Also, students that are in Junior High OR 21 years of age or older are NOT permitted to attend. Failure to comply will result in your loss of participation in future dances/ events.

*Homecoming Week is fast approaching! Homecoming Week is Monday, October 15^th – Friday October 19^th. In an effort to raise money for St. Jude, this year’s dress-up days, MONDAY – THURSDAY, will cost $1.00 payable to your first hour teacher. The dress-up days are as follows:

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is accepting applications for college scholarships through October 15. The $10,000/year scholarships are designed to aid students who would find attending college to be a significant financial burden due to the loss of a parent or guardian to breast cancer or their own breast cancer diagnosis at age 25 or younger. Let your college-bound friends and family know!

Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for this scholarship:
Must have lost a parent/guardian to breast cancer
OR Must be a breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 25 years or younger
Must be a high school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior
Must plan to attend a state-supported college or university in the state where they permanently reside (students in Washington DC can attend state-supported schools in Maryland or Virginia)
Must have a high school and/or college GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale
Must be no older than 25 years old by May 2013
Must be a U.S. citizen, or documented permanent resident of the U.S. (or US Territory)
Never at any time have been subject to any disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency
Must be a driven advocate for breast cancer education and research who is able to complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service per semester

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS: Some seniors have already inquired about the procedure for sending off college applications and transcripts. The process is very simple. If you are applying to a public college in the state of Louisiana, you can apply online, and pay your application fee online or mail it in. You do NOT have to ask the school to mail a copy of your transcript because all of the public colleges have access to your transcript online.

COMMON APPLICATION: Use one application to apply to several colleges. Many of them are private, out-of-state colleges. You can apply online at: www.commonapp.org or pick up an application in the counselor’s office.

CSS PROFILE: If you are applying to a private or out-of-state college and you plan to apply for financial aid, you may need to file the CSS/Financial Aid Profile. Check with the college to see if it is required. You can go online to www.collegeboard.com to register.

SELECTIVE SERVICE: Guys are reminded that you must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday. The easiest way to register is to go online to www.sss.gov .

VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Over $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives are awarded every year. Students complete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, Is Our Constitution Still Relevant? Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State level winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. AES ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP: $500 scholarship deadline is October 5, 2012. Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the scholarship page of our website: http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. This scholarship is not intended just for engineering students.

*Please make plans to come out and support the Tide as they host the Ruston Bearkats Friday night at the “Pit.” We need to pack the stands and support our team, our spirit groups, and our community. See you there at 7:00 PM. We will have a pep rally on Friday afternoon.

*Good luck to the JV/Freshman football team as they play Monday evening at 5:00 PM.

*Congratulations to Hannah P on being named 2012 Fair Queen….We are also extremely proud of Carlisa L who also placed 3^rd runner up in the pageant.

*All soccer players are to meet in Strong Hall during 4^th block on Monday.

*The first blood drive for this year will take place on Tuesday, Sep. 25. You must sign up ahead of time in order to donate blood.

*All juniors will meet with ring representatives on Thursday at 11:00 am in the auditorium. We will call for you when it is time to dismiss.

*Students, there still is entirely too much trash being left in the courtyard, cafeteria, and parking lots. Until there is a SIGNIFICANT improvement to assist in keeping our campus clean, we will NOT have a spirit day.

*Nature Club Members: The club will be traveling to Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas during our Fall Break from Sat., Oct. 6 through Tuesday, Oct. 9..The trip includes camping for 3 nights, hiking the scenic trails of the Ouachita Mountains, wildlife observations, cookouts, and more. Only a dozen students will be allowed to go…$15 deposit due at sign-up. See Mr. Dillon for more details. Sign-up sheet is now on Mr. Dillon’s door.

*Attention Tiders: Come on in and redeem your Roll Points in Roll Mart! Located in the library, Roll Mart will be open during both lunch shifts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday…Full of LOTS of MHS and LSU attire! ROLL on in and see what we have to offer.

*Due to excessive litter on campus and a total disregard of the beautification of our campus, there will be NO SPIRIT DAY until further notice!

*Attention all Freshmen: If you would like to run for any class officer position, you have until Wednesday to sign the sheet outside Mr. Dillon’s door. Officer elections will be Friday. All freshmen class officers will be expected to be leaders the week of Homecoming and must work on the Homecoming float.

*Nature Club members: The club will be traveling to Petit Jean (Petty Gene) State Park in Arkansas during our Fall Break from Sat., Oct. 6 through Tuesday, Oct. 9…The trip includes camping for 3 nights, hiking the scenic trails of the Ouachita Mountains, wildlife observations, cookouts, and more. Only a dozen students will be allowed to go, so be on the lookout for the sign-up sheet on Mr. Dillon’s door later this week. There will be a $15 deposit required to sign-up. Be sure to get the information sheet and permission slip, too.

*Juniors who are interested in running for a class officer position should sign up in Mr. Croad’s room Monday or Tuesday. Elections for Jr. Class Officers will be held on Friday. Also, a reminder for all juniors, payment of your $5 class fee is mandatory and must be paid in order to be eligible to participate in any school organizations or functions. Your fee may be paid to Mr. Croad before or after school or during lunch.

*There will be an important Art Club meeting after school on Thursdayin Mr. Croad’s room for all members and students interested in becoming a member. Club officers will be elected and several other important votes will be conducted at this meeting, so it is important for all members to be in attendance.

*Students who are interested in being tested for the Webster Parish talented art program should begin organizing a portfolio of 10-15 pieces of art for screening. When your portfolio is complete, you should go by Mrs. Fussell’s room 107 to sign for a screening packet. Portfolio and forms are due to the school SBLC by Sept. 28^th. State evaluations are scheduled for Oct. 26^th.

*Attention All Tiders: Come on in and redeem your roll points in Roll Mart! Located in the library, RollMart will be open both lunch shifts on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays…Full of LOTS of MHS and LSU attire! ROLL on in and see what we have to offer!

*If you would like to join he FFA, please see Mr. Lacobee ASAP. The FFA is making plans for this year’s activities and fundraisers…The 1^st meeting will be coming up soon.

*Students, there are many students out of dress code on a daily basis. The only day students are allowed to wear spirit shirts is on an announced Spirit Friday (no spirit day this week)..On spirit days, students should wear MHS spirit shirts with jeans…not ripped jeans with any skin showing. If a student wears a MHS pullover during the week a uniform shirt needs to be underneath if the pullover will be removed at any time during the day. St. Jude pullovers are NOT MHS spirit shirts…In February, after the annual auction, Mrs. Tucker normally allows St. Jude attire, but there is NO reason to be wearing that now.

*Swim team t-shirt orders are due to Mrs. Utley by the end of the day on Wed., Sept. 19.

*Attention Students: Students from various organizations such as cheerleading and leadership have worked VERY hard on signs to promote school spirit and student awareness on our campus. Please respect their efforts and not damage their work in any way.

*Hey, all of you Tider fans! Do you have any American flags that are old, torn, or unserviceable? The MHS JROTC and VFW are teaming up to conduct an official flag burning ceremony to dispose of the flags in the proper way. This event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9-noon at the Minden Fair Grounds. We hope that everyone participates and ask that you have all of the flags turned in to the main office no later than Sept. 14 by 1:30 pm .

*Good luck to all students who are trying out for the MHS bowling team on Monday afternoon.

APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID: Beginning in January, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Remember the FAFSA is required for all federal grants, loans, work-study, and the LA TOPS scholarship. Parents have to have their 2011 tax forms completed in order to fill out the FAFSA. Also, both student and parent must apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. You must be admitted to a school before they will consider you for financial aid. So, don’t delay your applications too long. More information about applying for financial aid will be discussed in January and February.

FAFSA Codes: When filling out the FAFSA, you must list a code for the colleges that you would like to receive your financial information. The codes are listed in a drop down menu on the FAFSA.

TOPS: Want to be considered for TOPS? Please make sure that when you are registering for the ACT, be sure to include LOSFA (the TOPS Code 1595) as your first choice under the “Your Score Report and College Choices” portion.

SCHOLARSHIP LETTERS: Seniors who receive scholarship offers are asked to bring a copy of your scholarship letter to your counselor.

*Congratulations to the Crimson Tide baseball team on their great season so far….the team is still undefeated in district and is currently ranked #6 in the state. Make plans to come out and support baseball as the Tide will host Benton on Thursday evening and Huntington on Saturday.

*Attention Seniors: There will be an important senior meeting at 11:00 on Friday, April 20 in the auditorium. Also, any senior who has received ANY scholarship offer needs to get this information into Coach Shaw by Friday, April 27 in order to be recognized at the senior awards ceremony.

*All State Literary Rally students need to get their medical forms and permission slips turned in ASAP to Mrs. Utley or Mrs. Spurlock. Good luck to all of these students as they travel to Baton Rouge on Friday, April 20 to participate at the state level.

Applying for financial aid: Beginning in January, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Remember the FAFSA is required for all federal grants, loans, work-study, and the LA TOPS scholarship. Parents have to have their 2011 tax forms completed in order to fill out the FAFSA. Also, both student and parent must apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. You must be admitted to a school before they will consider you for financial aid. So, don’t delay your applications too long. More information about applying for financial aid will be discussed in January and February.

LA College Goal Sunday: February 26, 2012: If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, college financial aid professionals will be available on February 26 from 2-4 p.m. at several locations throughout the state. *Make plans to support Tide basketball this week as the teams will travel to Fair Park on Tuesday evening and we will host Benton on Friday night. We need to PACK THE GYM on Friday to support our team!

*Teachers: Please be reminded that the School Improvement Team will meet on Monday immediately after school in the conference room and the regular faculty meeting will be on Monday, January 30 in Strong Hall.

*We are happy to report that over 120 students have qualified to wear jeans and a spirit shirt on ANY day due to great test result for the fall semester. The same incentive will be made for those testing this spring. More information coming soon…..

*Seniors: Please make sure that you are completing necessary information regarding your plans past high school. The most recent edition of the Senior Bulletin can be found on the school web-site.

*Counselors will be meeting with seniors to discuss final transcripts….Please report to the auditorium when you are called.

*Good luck to all students who will taking the EOC exams this week. Students, please do your very best and remember our spirit day testing incentives as you test.

*Tide basketball continues this week as both teams will travel to Loyola on Tuesday and will participate in the Calvary tournament beginning Thursday. Good luck to all of these students.

*Students, this is the last full week of instruction for the semester. Semester exams will begin next week and it is critical that you do your absolute best in all of your classes in order to gain all necessary credits for this semester.

*Please be reminded that all students are to report either to the cafeteria or the gym each morning until further notice.

*Good luck to Tide soccer teams as they will travel to W. Ouachita this week and host their first home game against Benton on Thursday.

*Our next blood drive will be held on Thursday. Please make sure you have signed up prior to the drive in order to be eligible.

*Attention all Honors Science Students; MHS Science Fair is Dec. 9 and set-up is Dec. 8. See Coach Bower if you have any questions.

*Congratulations to the Tide on their AWESOME win Friday night! The Tide now advances to the next round of the play-offs and will face Neville this Friday night. We need to travel and PACK THOSE STANDS to support our team! Tickets are $8.00 and are available in the main office.

*Make plans to support Tide basketball as the season gets underway…The Tide will participate in the Lakeside Jamboree this Thursday night. Also, during Thanksgiving break, the Tide will host its first home game against Homer on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

*Good luck to the Tide soccer team as they will play at the Rec. Ctr. This Thursday afternoon. Come out and support Tide soccer!

*Progress reports will go home on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

*We will have Club Day on Thursday….We will follow the same schedule as previous months.

*Students, please be reminded that there are only 4 weeks left in this semester. Please do all that you can to do outstanding work in all of your classes. Also, EOC tests will begin Dec. 1…..Please remember testing incentives.

*All WPSB schools will be closed Nov. 21-25 in observance of Thanksgiving holidays. May you all have a relaxed and blessed season with your friends and family.
