The Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng is a non-profit organization
initiated by the founder of IOI Group, which is a large and reputable
public listed group . IOI Group’s core industries comprises of oil
palm plantations, resource-based manufacturing such as refineries,

MIC PAYA BESAR: SPM PMR Motivational Camp

MIC Paya Besar Division with the assistance from PDP University Malaya conducted a 2 day Motivational Camp for PMR and SPM students at SRJK Tamil Bandar Indra Mahkota.

The motivational camp was a great success, we received a tremendous response from the parents. All gave their approval and commitment to MIC for more of such camps to be conducted. Some parents even requested seminar for the parents as well.

Mr.Saravanan and the PDP team has done a great job and all of us from MIC Paya Besar Division would like to thank his team for the job well done.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu vouched that he would "destroy" those who destroy the party before he steps down as party president next year.

"I'm not going to go like a fool from the MIC and I will make a good decision before I leave," he added when opening the Federal Territory MIC Convention, here Tuesday.

Samy Vellu who has been leading MIC for 31 years (since 1979) expressed high hopes that the next party president would run the party peacefully.

On another note, he dismissed the perception that MIC is no longer relevant for the Indian community as it had proven its worthiness by winning two by-elections.

"If MIC is not relevant, how then could we win in Bagan Pinang and Hulu Selangor (by-elections)?

"If we can go on with our transformation efforts, the MIC will continue to be accepted and respected," he said to about 300 delegates at the convention.

At a press conference before the convention, Samy Vellu announced that he would vacate the party top post "eight or nine months" before his current term expires in May 2012.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- MIC supremo Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu today refused to entertain questions from journalists over several thorny issues in the party, claiming that whatever he said would be twisted.

Samy Vellu's usual lively press conference was missing Thursday when he met the media after the party's monthly central working committee (CWC) meeting, and several queries from newsmen were met with a "no comment" reply.

Instead of firing on all cylinders, which is his usual style when answering questions from the media especially on touchy party matters, the former Works Minister opted to stay mum, raising eyebrows of the journalists, most of whom have been covering him for years.

"This is my new style. Because whatever I say is twisted. People draw all kinds of conclusion to whatever I reply. So, I have chosen to speak on important matters at the proper party forums.

"I am not against the media. I have always been known to be close to the media people. But when what I say is twisted by some, then I have to say the minimal and explain to MIC members what I want to tell them," he later told Bernama when met after the CWC meeting at the party headquarters here.

Earlier at the press conference, the long-serving MIC chief was asked for his reaction on the sacking of Petaling Jaya Selatan MIC division chief V. Subramaniam, popularly known as Barat Maniam.

"No comment," was his reply, starting off a series of similar replies to following questions.

Subramaniam was sacked by the party president yesterday for, among others, sending a nasty SMS to Samy Vellu telling him that the MIC did not belong to the MIC president or his family.

Then came the query about the proposed takeover of the party's debt-ridden investment arm Maika Holdings by port tycoon Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam, through a special purpose vehicle, G Team Resources and Holdings Sdn Bhd.

"No comment. This is a company's decision," was his short and stony reply, without even looking at the journalist who posed the question.

Yesterday, G Team Resources served a takeover notice to the Maika Holdings board of directors to acquire all its 125 million voting shares at 80 sen per share in cash.

Then came the cruncher from the reporter: "Will you step down in 2012?" Without even missing a beat, Samy Vellu fired back: "No comment".

Samy Vellu's presidential term expires in 2012 and the pressure is on the 74-year-old who became party chief in 1989 to vacate the seat for his current deputy, Datuk G. Palanivel.

The MIC chief also declined to comment on the action of K.P. Samy, a CWC member, who just after the meeting told journalists that he would initiate a defamation case against MIC Youth chief T. Mohan for calling him "childish" during the meeting.

While Samy Vellu's intention to stick to his new "no comment" policy would stop the "twisting" of facts, it would on the other hand heighten speculation on certain party matters, especially the transition power, which needs to be explained to the 630,000 MIC members.

G Team Serves Takeover Offer Of Maika Shares At 80 Sen Each

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- G Team Resources & Holdings Sdn Bhd this morning served a takeover notice to the Maika Holdings Bhd Board of Directors, to acquire all its 125 million voting shares, at 80 sen per share in cash.

The offer is based on the shareholders' original investment of RM100 million and 25 million bonus shares received in 1996, in the ailing investment arm of the MIC, it said in a statement Wednesday.

G Team Resources is a special purpose vehicle formed by port tycoon Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam and another individual Datuk S. Kunasingam, to return long-suffering Maika shareholders their original cost of investment.

The offer document is expected to be despatched to Maika shareholders within 21 days. The offer would remain open for at least 21 days from the date of the offer document.

CIMB Investment Bank has been engaged as the adviser and financier to G Team for this exercise.

Gnanalingam had recently moved to help resolve the woes of Indian shareholders in Maika, considered the biggest problem besetting the community.

At a press conference here Wednesday, Gnanalingam said he was confident of receiving more than 50 per cent of the voting shares, failing which, the offer would lapse.

He said a general offer of Oriental Capital Assurance Bhd (OCA), a 74.16 per cent subsidiary of Maika, would also be triggered once the offer becomes unconditional.

"We do not intend to continue with the operations of Maika and will deal with the assets and liabilities of the firm in a transparent manner," he added.

Maika currently has two main assets, namely its stake in OCA and a piece of land in Sepang.

He added that the land in Sepang was encumbered and once its title and valuation was verified, a committee would be set up to determine the best way to realise its value.

At the same event, CIMB Group Chief Executive, Datuk Seri Nazir Razak said G Team would explore opportunities to dispose of the stake in OCA and was open to receiving interest from all qualified parties.

This is in line with G Team's intention to cease Maika's operations and to comply with Bank Negara Malaysia's condition to dispose of its stake in OCA within 12 months from the completion of the subsequent general offer on the insurance firm.

"G Team does not intend to gain any financial benefits from the exercise and should the disposal of Maika's assets and settlement of liabilities result in a surplus, it would be donated to an established charity for the benefit of the Indian community.

"But the case of having a surplus is remote. The probability is there for G team to be short-changed, instead of the shareholders," he explained.

In the case of a shortfall in the asset and liabilities realisation, the loss would be borne by G Team, he said.

Nazir also said that they were looking at a mechanism to assist shareholders in dealing with the process of selling their shares to G Team.

"The obvious way is to post it. But, we will also look at having collection centres at our branches, to facilitate with the form submission by shareholders," he said.

MIED Ex-Director Charged With RM4 Million Cheating

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) -- Former Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) chief executive officer P.Chitirakala was charged in the Sessions Court here on Tuesday with three counts of cheating involving RM4 million.

Chitirakala, 39, of Shah Alam, pleaded not guilty to cheating former MIC treasurer-general Tan Sri M.Mahalingam, 74, who was a director and signatory of MIED Sdn Bhd, by inducing him to sign three cheques for RM1 million, RM1 million and RM2 million.

She is alleged to have deceived him into believing that the payments, which were made to Silver Line Services Sdn Bhd, were loan repayments to one Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Manaf, 64.

The offences were allegedly committed at the MIED, the education branch of the MIC, at Menara Manickavasagam on Jan 9, Jan 30 and May 3, 2007.

If convicted, she faces a maximum 10 years jail and whipping and liability of a fine on each charge.

Deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais offered bail of RM30,000 in view of the huge amount involved and the seriousness of the offence.

Defence counsel Saseedharan Menon asked for lower bail, saying that Chitirakala had assisted the police in their investigation.

Judge Azizah Mahamud allowed bail of RM30,000 with one surety and fixed June 14 for mention to enable the prosecution to supply all the documents needed by the defence.

Maika Share Buy Back Not Politically-Motivated - Tycoon

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- There is no political motive in the takeover of Maika Holdings Bhd shares but purely a noble intention to help 66,000 long-suffering Malaysian Indians, port tycoon Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam said on Wednesday.

Brushing aside speculation and news reports that the move to buy back the shares was politically-linked, the businessman said his intention was to try end the issue because he felt that shareholders should be given a respite after being caught in the Maika share fiasco for the last 26 years.

"I was appointed to the Cabinet Committee and Special Implementation Taskforce aimed at assisting the Indian community, and I found this issue to be a big problem faced by Indians.

"So, I have come out with this plan or proposal. This problem has been going on and on.

"The prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) and the committee are certainly disturbed with this problem. So, I branched into this. We are not looking at the past, but the future. Out of the 66,000 shareholders, about 60,000 are without proper resources (cash). This is the important segment that I want to assist in," he declared at a press conference at the CIMB Bank headquarters here on Wednesday.

Also present at the press conference, held to announce the conditional takeover offer by G Team Resources & Holding Bhd to acquire all shares in Maika Holdings Bhd, was CIMB Group Chief Executive Datuk Seri Nazir Razak.

Under the proposal, Gnanalingam's firm, G Team Resources, will buy out financially-troubled Maika for RM100 million and pay back the money invested by the 66,000 long-suffering shareholders of MIC's investment arm. Each shareholder would stand to get 80 sen per share.

Shareholders would be given 21 days to redeem their shares. They would get their offer letters via post and would most likely be asked to submit the share buy-back applications to any CIMB Bank branches nationwide.

"G Team does not intend to gain any financial benefits from the exercise. Should the subsequent disposal of Maika's assets and settlement of liabilities result in any financial gain, the monies would be donated to an established charity for the benefit of the Malaysian Indian community.

"In the case of a shortfall in the asset and liabilities realisation, the loss would be borne by G Team. The offer shall be conditional upon G Team receiving more than 50 per cent of the voting shares in Maika, falling which, the offer would lapse," the Westports executive chairman added.

However, the well-known businessman, dubbed the 'white knight' who would save Maika and end the woes of the 66,000 Malaysian Indians, said from the feedback received to date, the exercise would result in at least 70 per cent of Maika shares being bought back.

On Oriental Capital Assurance (OCA) Bhd, a 74 per cent subsidiary of Maika, he said G Team would explore the opportunities to dispose the stake and were open to receive any offer for it from interested parties.

"We intend to cease Maika's operations and comply with BNM's (Bank Negara Malaysia) condition to dispose the stake in OCA within 12 months from the completion of the subsequent general offer on OCA. CIMB would be assisting G Team manage the sale of OCA to parties approved by BNM," he added.

On Maika's second biggest asset, a 32 hectare land in Sepang, Gnanalingam said the land was encumbered and once its title and valuation had been verified, a committee led by him, would determine the best way to realise the value of the land.

Gnanalingam however, declined to reveal the exact percentage of Maika shares owned by MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

It had been reported that many people who invested in Maika, the investment arm of the MIC, in 1984 were Indian estate workers who had pawned their family jewellery and withdrawn their life savings to invest.

But Maika Holdings, which was established in 1982 to enable Malaysian Indians to participate in the country's economic growth, did not produce good returns, much to the disillusionment of its shareholders.

Asked if a court order taken out by some Maika shareholders to stop such a sale in the past would hamper the exercise, Gnanalingam said it would not be stumbling block but "we can't do anything about it until we become substantial shareholders of Maika".

Meanwhile, Nazir explained that both G Team and CIMB did not have any intention to short change the shareholders through the exercise and that "the key thing is to look forward."

He said the whole exercise would clear one hurdle at a time and would "cross the bridge when we come to it but we are clearly going ahead (with the exercise).

"We will issue the share sale proposal forms and it must be submitted at CIMB branches. We want to ensure every single shareholder receives the forms for the share buy-back," he added.

Sacked MIC Division Chief Yet To Decide On Appeal

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Petaling Jaya Selatan MIC division chief Subramaniam V. said he has yet to decide whether to appeal or not over his sacking from the party.

"I'm not sure, I will think it over. I am not a beggar to go to him (MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu)," he told Bernama when contacted Wednesday night.

Subramaniam or Barat Maniam said he came to know about his sacking through a letter which he received Wednesday.

He said the sacking was effective from Wednesday.

Among reasons given for his sacking was the SMS sent to Samy last week, among others telling him that MIC did not belong to him or his family.

Barat Maniam said he made history by being sacked for the third time since joining MIC in 1978.

He was sacked in 1984 and in 1994.

The MIC had given him 14 days from the date of receiving the letter to make an appeal.

A national figure or a people's MP? P094

KUALA KUBU BARU: The stage is all set for the big battle – the respective parties have chosen their men and tomorrow they will file their nomination papers.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, PKR's Zaid Ibrahim will meet BN's P Kamalanathan in what could be a bruising fight for the hearts and minds of the Hulu Selangor voters.

Zaid is a non-local but a well-known figure in the political arena at the national level. Kamalanathan, on the other hand, although also a non-local, is born and bred in Rawang, which is near to the Hulu Selangor constituency. Thus, he can claim to be acquainted with the locals there. His only exposure on the national stage is as MIC information chief.

Given the background of the candidates, it is clear that both sides of the political divide are approaching the voters at two different levels when they hit the trail.

BN will trumpet its ability to tackle local problems while PKR will go to town with the message that its candidate will be able to fight for them at the national level.

But beneath the seemingly calm surface, both rival parties face the same problem – resentment towards the chosen candidates.

For BN, the problem seems to be manageable because the respective party leaders are quite capable of disciplining their members.

For PKR, it is a totally different story, given the recent spate of troubles plaguing the party. Distrust, internal politicking, resignations, mutual recriminations, open slanging match seem to be the order of the day in the ranks of the PKR.

When Zaid was picked, many PKR members took offence and many have indicated that they would not be campaigning for him.

If this anger lasts until polling day – April 25 – PKR can say goodbye to the seat.

Even big gun Anwar Ibrahim is not expected to make much of an impact, given his personal problems that have put him in a very tight spot.

By parachuting Zaid into the war zone, it makes it difficult for PKR members to “sell” him to the locals, especially when he is a national figure who speaks more English than Malay.

PKR members were expecting someone who is more down-to-earth to represent the locals, the very people who would be ticking the ballot papers.

Under normal circumstances, the electorate would normally choose someone who can serve them effectively. But Hulu Selangor is not a simple story. Many complications have set in, making it somewhat difficult for the voters to decide who they eventually want as their man in Parliament. Do they want an MP who can articulate only national and international issues or a Yang Berhormat who can alleviate the misery of the local people?

Come April 25, the voters of Hulu Selangor will reveal what role they want their MP to play in the Dewan Rakyat.

Kamalanathan for P094 Hulu Selangor.. The Best Choice

dilaporkan bersetuju supaya ketua penerangannya, P Kamalanathan diletakkan sebagai sebagai calon Barisan Nasional bagi kerusi parlimen Hulu Selangor.

Sebelum ini, Barisan Nasional dilaporkan menghadapi jalan buntu mencari calon yang sesuai.

Ini kerana MIC mahu timbalan presidennya, Datuk G Palnivel diletakkan sebagai calon tetapi permintaan itu ditolak oleh Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin selaku timbalan pengerusi BN.

Penyokong akar umbi, khususnya dari Umno sejak kematian ahli parlimen Hulu Selangor, Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad pada 25 Mac lalu secara terang-terangan menolak Palanivel.

Mereka mendakwa beliau tidak cekap dan gagal membangunkan Hulu Selangor meskipun menjadi ahli parlimen selama empat penggal.

Sebaliknya, mereka yang menentang Palanivel mencadangkan timbalan ketua pemuda MIC, V Mugilan sebagai gantinya.

Mugilan adalah anak tempatan di Hulu Selangor tetapi pemimpin atasan MIC tidak merestui cadangan itu.

Ini kerana tidak ramai pemimpin atasan MIC memegang jawatan ahli parlimen ataupun ahli dewan undangan negeri dan jika Mugilan menang dia akan mempunyai kelebihan.

Pada mesyuarat tergempar jawatankuasa pusat MIC yang diadakan malam tadi, MIC berkeras mahukan hanya Palanivel sebagai calon mereka.

Mesyuarat itu juga mengambil keputusan untuk memecat timbalan ketua Pemuda MIC, V Mugilan sekiranya dia dipilih sebagai calon BN dalam pilihan raya kecil parlimen Hulu Selangor.

Beliau dipertanggungjawabkan oleh pemimpin MIC untuk menjenamakan semula parti itu selepas pilihan raya umum 2008 yang keputusannya memalukan mereka

Kamalanathan juga adalah seorang blogger, yang seringkali dijemput menghadiri rancangan ehwal semasa dan juga pensyarah sambilan di sebuah kolej swasta.

Meskipun bukan anak tempatan Hulu Selangor, Kamalanathan menetap di Rawang, sebuah pekan yang tidak jauh dari kawasan pilihan raya itu.
