In the 1940s and 1950s, the company was very proud of some models, the 7R, the 7R3, the 'Model 33,' the 250 and 410 'Stormer,' and 'MX' motocross bike.

Till 1969, when the AJS brand name disappeared for good, a few bikes built under Matchless signature were released, the AJS Model 33 being the last AJS four stroke produced. If we go back, we have to say that in 1938, Charlie and Harry Collier formed 'Associated Motor Cycles' (AMC) in 1938 and this is related to the fact that in 1966, AMC was sold to Norton-Villiers, which was buried in financial problems in 1974.

AJS was the name used for cars and motorcycles made by the Wolverhampton, England company A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd, from 1909 to 1931' The Stevens brothers began their career at the Stevens Screw Company, whose story began in 1800, due to their father Joseph Stevens. He built small 125cc 'Wearwell-Stevens' motorcycle engines in 1905. On that period, his sons decided to build their own motorcycles, wearing JAP engines. The year 1911 brought for AJS, the first production motorcycle, the 'Model A,' which had a single-cylinder 292cc side-valve motor with 2.75 hp. A year later, in 1912, the company put its first V-Twin 698cc three-speed 'Model D,' on the street. The model had 6 hp. Being successful and appreciated, the company received a lot of orders, so, it built a new factory in Wolverhampton. The 1920s were good for AJS, now being produced some models, from the 349cc single-cylinder 'Big Port' born in 1923, to the 349cc racing model 'K7'. On the same list there were the 498cc OHC model 'K10,' and 'M10.' In 1921, the engine grew up to 800cc. Till 1931, when the company began to experience financial troubles, AJS made a few cars with Meadows engines, manufactured car bodies for Clyno and made 200 buses and coaches.
In 1931, the company was bought by the Collier brothers London company Matchless and even if after a while, the Stevens brothers started a new company as Stevens Brothers (Wolverhampton) Ltd to make 3 wheel delivery vans, they could not use AJS brand because it belonged to the Colliers. The vans used a 588 cc single cylinder engine driving the rear wheels through a 3 speed gearbox and chain drive. The last ones were made in 1936.

Kawasaki 125 Street Racer

The motorcycle above it's a custom Kawasaki Ninja 250r from Donny in Jakarta, Indonesia. The time it takes to build a bike is always something I consider and this bike was no weekend task. It's an impressive feat of fabrication necessitated purely by a lack of alternatives.

When I first saw this Kawasaki in my email I made the assumption that it was built up using prefabbed fiberglass components...boy was I wrong. Using galvanized 1and 1.2mm plate the bikes tank, tail and that lovely front fairing were all built from scratch; in the builders own words "we mostly do everything with hands, fire and hammer ... seriously". Owner Donny tells us that the front fairing took 3 attempts before they even got around to making the acrylic windshield to go on top.

The front forks, rear swing arm and rims were all transplanted from a Suzuki GSXR750 to beef up the motorcycles appearance and add some modern performance improvements. A Sportisi exhaust and K&N filter improve the bikes ability to breath and the brakes have been upgraded to Tokico units. Paint was done by local shop Komet Studio who finished the bike in super red with a coat of Spies Hecker Varnish to get a super smooth finish.

Honda CL350

There's an interesting phenomena, the name of which I haven't figured out yet (suggestions on the back of a stamped, self-addressed email please), that somehow dictates that any cool custom shop we stumble upon will have a back catalogue of bikes inversely proportional to the distance they are from the west. Recently found a new shop in downtown London/New York/ LA/Sydney? See that one bike they have displayed proudly in the window? It's a safe bet it's their only one, too. But find yourself wandering through, say, South Jakarta and the lucky money's on any bike shop within spitting distance being a veritable custom bike factory. Like this one for instance. Downtown Bintaro's own Studio Motor Custom Bikes. A quick skim of their website and I counted at least a dozen of the sweetest bike's I've seen in a good while, including this here gem. Please give a warm, 12 bike salute to Studio Motor's hard-working boss, Donny Ariyanto.

Here's Mr. Donny. “My custom workshop is established since 2008 with the name STUDIO MOTOR Custom Bike at Bintaro - South Jakarta, Indonesia.

Dibagian buritan lengan ayun kustom mengandalkan pipa seamless 1.25 Inch didaulat menggantikan lengan ayun bawaan motor, sementara untuk shock belakang Bro Hendra mantap memilih YSS Z-Series 36 mm.

Matchless built a range of motorcycles from two strokes to 750cc twins, made significant developments in the advancement of motorcycle suspension and held the title of first single cylinder motorcycle to win the Isle of Mann TT (1907). Sadly though in 1966 Matchless closed their doors due to dwindling sales and debilitating financial losses. Seeing a Matchless out on the streets these days is a real treat but even better is finding a tastefully customised one.

This Matchless Cafe Racer is the work of Studio Motor Customs in Jakarta, Indonesia. The bike started out as a 1954 500cc single that was in need of some TLC. After receiving instructions from the bikes owner to rebuild it in the style of the British Cafe Racers the SMC team started sketching. Their final design was a bike featured the desired classic looks with a touch of modern styling necessitated by limited local resources.

The bikes hand formed custom tank and rear cowl are made from 1.2mm galvanised plate and the beautifully finished seat was covered in house. The jet black paint with gold pinstriping and Matchless emblems were done by Comet Studio in Jakarta, who finished the bodywork using Sikkens wood varnish, giving it a "permanent wet look effect" (that's a first!). A set of more modern wheels were taken from a Honda CB400 and were fit after they underwent some aesthetic customisation to match the style of the rest of the build.

To look at the bike now it's hard to believe that it's actually 58 years old. Do you think I was in Singapore? Nope. Laos? Not even close. Thailand? No siree… I was actually in a workshop on the outskirts of Sydney. I got the idea of it though, garishly decorated and loud, a simple means to get around. Hailing from the same part of the world, comes a bike that is the healthy opposite to the idea of a tuk tuk. Well thought out aesthetics, the note of 736cc of Honda quad cylinder power, and a race fairing beat out of galvanised plate come together to show (once again) the talents of Donny Ariyanto at Studio Motor. If only as much thought went into tuk tuk design as went into this.

After spotting a replica of ‘Bugsy’ Mann’s famous CB750 racebike at the mall, an inspired Nugroho O.S commissioned Studio Motors to build him a bike modelled on the 1970 Daytona 200 winner. Starting with a bike that looked sad, but with an almost original condition engine, Donny and his team got to work. In true Studio Motor style, 1.2mm thick galvanised plate was used to form the fairing, gas tank, fender and tail. And because racebikes, even replica ones, aren’t complete without rearsets, a pair was sourced from Nui projects.

The factory front end has been ditched, in it’s place a Suzuki Bandit 400 pair of forks. The Bandit’s Nissin master cylinder and caliper have been retained to add to the stopping power of the front end, to bring it more up to date. 19 inch wheels are fitted front and rear, with Donny convincing Nugroho to keep the Comstar rims, to keep the bike looking as period correct as possible.

The bike is rather visually pleasing, Komet Studio applying a Spies Hecker based candy red with varnish. The wetlook effect finish is exactly what Donny was aiming for with the paint. The powertrain got a freshen up too, the engine block covered with a mix of powdercoating and polishing offsetting each other. The exhaust is entirely custom, put together by Asky Custom Muffler to bring out the beautiful note of the Honda 4.

Donny and Studio Motor have really come into their element, using all their resources, on top of their own abilities to produce this machine. The paint, the lines, the skinny tires all work together to produce a replica of a replica – which is something amazing in itself. And in a part of the world that produces something as aesthetically and aurally displeasing as the tuk tuk (they do put a smile on your face though), it’s good to know there are guys like Donny around to show us some true automotive beauty.

EVER LAST CROSS
