Let's look at some factors that can affect the journey your supplement takes and also affect how well your body can absorb a supplement's ingredients.

What is Bio-availability?

Bio-availability is the degree to which a nutrient is available to the body for use. More specifically, for a nutrient to be bio-available it must be within physical proximity to the cell so the cell can use it. Also, for a nutrient to be bio-available it has to be dissolved in some sort of solution so that the nutrient can be transported across the cell membrane.

From a non biochemistry perspective, here's a simple way to picture what needs to happen; the nutrient has to make it all the way from your mouth to the cell and be in a form the cell can use.

For bioavailability to occur, certain things have to happen once you put that supplement into your mouth. Here are two of those processes. One is dissolution which refers to how fast a supplement dissolves. An example to help you picture this process would be taking some sugar, putting it in a glass of water and stirring it with a spoon until the sugar disappears.

Another process is disintegration. This is similar to dissolution only disintegration refers to how fast the capsule or tablet breaks into smaller pieces so that the dissolution process can take place.

How to tell if your supplement will dissolve?

So how in the world are you going to be able to tell if the supplement you are considering does all this dissolution and disintegration stuff? Fortunately, it's pretty straight forward to figure out. A good way to know that your supplement is meeting these standards is to make sure there is some sort of "USP" designation on the label of the product.

USP refers to U.S. Pharmacopeia, an organization that was established to create state-of-the-art standards to ensure the quality of medicines that humans use. This includes vitamin and mineral supplements.

An example of the kind of USP designation that you want to look for on the label of a product you are considering would be something like, "this product conforms to the USPXXVII requirements for disintegration and dissolution".

What Chelation Does?

Chelation is very important when it comes to making sure that the minerals in your supplement are bioavailable. Chelation refers to a process that increases the absorption of minerals such as chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum and zinc.

It can be hard to get minerals all the way to that bioavailable state that was discussed earlier. Chelation involves wrapping the mineral in an amino acid so that the body can more easily absorb it. This can improve the absorption of some minerals from only 10% absorption for a non chelated mineral to 45% and more for a chelated mineral.

So when you are looking at the label of a vitamin supplement and you find a trace mineral such as manganese as one of the ingredients, you want to see something like "Manganese (as Manganese Chelate)" on the label. This indicates that the manganese mineral has been chelated.

What can happen if you pick the wrong supplement?

If the vitamin supplement you are considering doesn't meet the standards discussed above, it can pass right through your body and do you no good at all.

To give you an example of this, I have actually seen a photo of an x-ray taken of a person's colon area with the vertebrae of their backbone off to one side. In this photo I could clearly see two supplement tablets, still intact, looking like they had just come out of the bottle. These supplement tablets were poorly made, never disintegrated and would soon end up in the toilet.

Photos like these are a graphic illustration of the fact that just because you swallow your vitamin supplement doesn't mean your body is going to be able to use it.

Are you wasting your money?

With this in mind, let's look at this useless, undissolved supplement from a another perspective; a financial one. Let's say you find a great deal on a supplement and start taking it. We'll call it Supplement X. Let's also say this Supplement X costs $20 for a sixty day supply.

You think you've found a great deal, however what if it turns out that your Supplement X has been poorly manufactured and is only 10% bio available. What this means is that your body will be only able to use $2 worth of this supplement ($20 times 10%).

And what happened to the other $18 you paid for the supplement? It went right through your body, that's what. Looking at it another way, you paid $20 for your sixty day supplement supply yet ended up completely wasting 90% of that $20 you spent. You literally flushed $18 right down the toilet.

Just like everything else in life, there is no free lunch. When it comes to choosing a supplement, don't be cheap. Do your homework and find a good quality supplement that your body can actually use.
http://www.splinfo.com

7 Vitamins Every Arthritis Sufferer Should Know About

Lack of vitamin A can lead to health problems, including some forms of arthritis.
These organic materials are purchased through the regular intake of fruits and vegetables. Due to factors not always be getting our recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamins:

Poor soil quality

Modern processing methods

Popularity of 'Junk' foods

As an alternative to get your RDA diet many people now take vitamin supplements.
The following list of vitamins are known to be particularly useful for arthritis sufferers: Vitamin B5 and collapsed when grouped together, B vitamins work at their best. They, and B5, in particular, are good for reducing swelling.
Vitamin B3 This vitamin reduces tissue swelling and expanding small arteries, increasing blood flow. Note that Vitamin B3 is not recommended for people with hypertension, gout, or sliver disorders.
Another B vitamin B6, which reduces the swelling of tissues.
B12 This vitamin helps to more features. Assistance with cell formation, digestion, myelin production, nerve protection.
Vitamin C - This vitamin acts as an anti-inflammatory to relieve pain, and deprives the body of free radicals.
Vitamin E, powerful antioxidant that protects joints from free radicals while increases joint mobility.
Vitamin K This vitamin assists with mineral deposit into the bone matrix.
There are two types of vitamins:
Soluble in water - These vitamins (B complex and C are not) are not stored in our body organs and usually pass through the body very quickly, as urine. It is thus important for normal daily intake of these vitamins.
Fat Soluable - Vitamins A, D, E and K stay in the body, which are stored in the liver. A balanced diet normally supplies sufficient vitamins. However, serious disorders can still develop if the diet does not meet your body's needs. Symptoms of a deficiency in vitamins and minerals usually appear when the lack is already in a relatively advanced level.

For instance, people who do not have enough of the vitamins A, B1 and B2 suffer from recurring tiredness, mental or emotional disturbances, loss of appetite and chapped lips, among others.

The common causes of these vitamin deficiencies include poor eating habits, alcoholism, emotional stress, the improper absorption of vitamins and minerals (usually due to liver or intestinal disorders), the intake of medicines that interfere with the ingestion of vitamins and lack of exposure to sunlight.

If you constantly feel sluggish and suffer from chronic health-related inconveniences, you might be short of the vitamins your body needs to function properly. Doctors will usually prescribe supplements that address the lack of vitamins and minerals in the body. However, also keep in mind not to overdo it, as an excess of vitamins can also be harmful.

Do you still need to take vitamins even if you maintain a healthy diet? The answer is yes. Proper food consumption should be accompanied by the right vitamins and minerals. Vitamins serve as buffers in the event that your diet does not meet your daily requirements fully. Surely you can't calculate how much vitamins and minerals your body takes in with every meal you consume. And while most people take vitamins to avoid common deficiency-related diseases, not all products available cater to what your body requires. There are those that still lack what you need.

The key components you must look for in a supplement are the vitamins B6, B12, D, E and folic acid. Aside from being dietary supplements, these so-called B vitamins have been known to help combat certain types of cancer and heart ailments. While there remains no hard-lined link between cancer and a daily intake of B vitamins, studies that suggest their preventive powers have helped raise the importance of daily doses of vitamins and minerals into our system.

Standard RDA-level vitamins can easily be bought over the counter at a reasonable price. Yes, the old belief that a proper diet is enough to keep you going has become a myth. It is time to invest in our health. Whether we admit it or not, we need vitamins. Sure, it does lead to added costs; but when we really think about it, vitamins are probably the cheapest type of insurance readily available in the market right now. Who are we to say no?

Although each contribute differently to your needs, vitamins and minerals work together in order to give you a balanced amount of all the components needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are some of the vitamins and minerals that are essential to your overall health and why they are important:

Vitamin Supplements

Vitamin A- Vitamin A helps to maintain healthy vision, keep your skin healthy and boost your immune system. In simpler terms, this vitamin keeps your skin healthy, protects against wrinkles and acne and helps fight off infections and other unwanted diseases.

Vitamin B12- This vitamin enhances muscle strength, provides energy and helps your nerves function properly. Insufficient amounts of vitamin B12 can lead to health complications such as fatigue, weak muscles and severe depression.

Vitamin C- Vitamin C serves a number of purposes including healing wounds, boosting your immune system, protecting artery linings and preventing cataracts.

Vitamin D- Vitamin D supplements are helpful for babies who are breastfed since breastfeeding does not provide adequate amounts of this vitamin. Vitamin D has also been known to help fight osteoporosis.

Vitamin E- This vitamin is known to help protect against heart disease and some forms of cancer. It also boosts the immune system and helps in healing injuries and wounds. Some studies prove that this vitamin also helps boost the immune system of elderly people.

Vitamin K- Vitamin K strengthens bones and is known to help fight osteoporosis.

Mineral Supplements

Calcium- Calcium is known to protect bones and make them stronger, but it also helps in lowering blood pressure and preventing colon cancer and PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome). Make sure you only take the recommended amount of calcium per day. Too much calcium can increase the risk of prostate cancer in men.

Chromium- This mineral assists the hormone insulin and helps it to operate more efficiently. When the insulin is functioning at the appropriate level, your blood sugar levels are lower, which is helpful to individuals with type 2 diabetes. This mineral has also been proven to help with weight loss.

Iron- Lack of iron can cause fatigue and low energy levels. Iron deficiency is usually found in pre-menopausal women, athletes and vegetarians. Although iron helps boost your energy levels, too much of this mineral may cause heart disease and can place you at higher risks for cancer.

If you feel as though your daily diet does not provide you with adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals, taking supplements can greatly improve your lifestyle and can give you the energy and the boost you need to get you through the day. Always remember that vitamin and mineral supplements are to be used in combination with food and are in no way meant as a replacement for a healthy diet.
The lack of vitamins in your diet can be unhealthy, but too many vitamins can also put your health in danger. So, how do you know if taking vitamin and mineral supplements is necessary for you? Ask yourself the following questions in order to determine if you may need vitamin supplementation for a healthier lifestyle:

1. Am I Stressed? If you are constantly stressed-out due to work, relationships, family or any other situation, your adrenal glands may be working overtime. This can potentially cause fatigue and headaches.

Treatment: Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements can help with this problem.

2. Is My Immune System Up to Par? Do you constantly find yourself catching colds and the flu more frequently than others? You may need to boost your immune system with vitamins and minerals which provide the nutrients needed to fight these viruses.

Treatment: Vitamin C supplement, Zinc and Manganese will do the trick.

3. Do I smoke? I'm sure you're aware that this habit is unhealthy but smoking uses up vitamin C and puts you at higher risk of osteoporosis.

Treatment: Vitamin C supplements and calcium supplements will help reduce your chances of osteoporosis and provide you with the adequate amount of vitamin C.

4. Am I Pregnant? Pregnant and hormonal women often lack in vitamin B-6. If you do not receive enough of this vitamin it can be harmful to you and your baby.

Treatment: Take a vitamin B-6 supplement, but make sure not to take doses of more than 500mg per day without a Doctors recommendation.

5. Am I on a Diet? If you are on a low-carb, low-fat or any form of diet you are probably not receiving the vitamins necessary for healthy living. Individuals on diets very rarely eat foods from all the major food groups and if they do, they usually do not eat the required amounts.

Treatment: Depending on the type of diet and the foods you eat, you may require a multi-vitamin supplement or specific supplements of Vitamin A, B, C, D, E or K.

Answering yes to any of the questions above does not necessarily mean that vitamin or mineral supplements are crucial to healthy living. The situations listed above are merely a guideline to help individuals who already feel as though they are lacking the vitamins and minerals in their diets. It is important to remember that vitamin supplements are meant to accompany food and are in no way meant as a replacement for a healthy diet.

Health-related information changes frequently, and while every attempt has been made to ensure the content in this article is up to date and accurate, you should always check with a doctor or nutritional expert before undertaking any substantial change in diet or lifestyle.
How Do I Choose The Best Multivitamins?

Vitamins A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E. Should you take one of each or a one-a-day multivitamin? That?s a question which causes much confusion for the average consumer. Most people should be taking a multivitamin each and every day to ensure optimum health and to strengthen the immune system against colds, viruses, and various other common ailments. Some studies show that vitamins may help prevent certain diseases including heart disease, osteoporosis, and maybe even certain cancers. There have also been published reports showing that people who lack certain vitamins and minerals in their diets tend to age faster. More and more evidence suggests that multivitamins are a good bet for most people. You should check with your doctor first if you have any pre-existing conditions or any specific needs.
Ideally, vitamins, minerals, and nutrients should come from a well balanced diet. However, the reality is that most of us aren?t eating enough of the right foods. The American Cancer Society suggests eating five or more servings of fruit and vegetables every day to help prevent cancer over a lifetime. To prevent diabetes, the American Diabetes Association suggests including fish in your diet 2-3 times a week. Most people are falling way short of these nutritional goals due to hectic lifestyles, poor eating habits, weight loss diets, and junk food. If you are one of those people who might not eat right every single day, a multivitamin should be included in your diet as insurance and can help you get the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs.
Who else should take a multivitamin?
Most people will benefit from a daily multivitamin, particularly pregnant women, people over the age of 50, dieters, vegetarians, and smokers. Smokers especially need their antioxidants. Cigarette smoke contain dangerous compounds called ?free radicals?. These ?free radicals? react with cells causing problems and abnormalities. Antioxidants can reduce their negative effects and greatly decrease the damage already caused by them. A good multivitamin should contain as many of the following vitamins and minerals as possible: vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, and vitamin B6, zinc, selenium, and copper.
Which multivitamin should you choose?
When choosing a multivitamin, look at the label and choose one that has nutrient levels at or close to 100% of the (RDA) Recommended Daily Allowance. For most people, a typical multivitamin is sufficient. Reputable manufacturers of multivitamin supplements include Twinlab, Solgar, Country Life, Nature?s Best, and Natrol to name just a few. There are also specialty formulas out there specifically tailored for men, women, children, seniors, athletes and bodybuilders. Bodybuilders and athletes deplete the vitamin and mineral stores in their body?s through strenuous exercise and weight lifting. These vital nutrients need to be replaced for peak optimal performance.
Additional Tips:
- Not all multivitamins are created equal. If you?re unhappy with your current multi, find a formula you truly like.
- Multivitamins come in capsules, tabs, and even liquid formulas. If you have trouble swallowing capsules or tablets, you may want to give the liquid formulas a try.

- If a multivitamin upsets your stomach, try taking it with food. This usually helps.

- Do not take more than is recommended on the package. Most formulas call for ?one-a-day?.

- Calcium is especially important for women. Try and choose a formula with 100% of the RDA
Recommended Daily Allowance of calcium in each serving.

- While iron is essential to the human body, too much iron for men can be toxic and can potentially lead to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and liver disease. Most vitamin manufacturers make an ?iron free? formula specifically for men. Try and find a formula that contains less than 9 milligrams of iron which is the amount experts suggest should not be exceeded.

- Try not to buy ?cheap? vitamins from close-out or dollar stores. They tend to be of less quality than more trusted brands and may even be past their expiration dates.
Precautions:
- Pregnant women should always consult their primary physician before undertaking any vitamin or supplement program.
- Severe vitamin deficiencies require medical attention and should not be treated with dietary supplements.
- Various medications have the potential of interacting with your multivitamins. Again, please consult your doctor if you are taking any medication for a pre existing condition.
Remember, a multivitamin is no substitute for a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition. Find a good multivitamin that is right for you, eat right, exercise often, don?t smoke, visit the doctor at least once a year and stay well.

Multivitamins With Minerals

Multivitamins with minerals can help your body function better. Find out why.

What are multivitamins with minerals and why do I need them?

These multivitamins contain minerals, which are natural-occurring substances that cannot be produced by our own bodies, and which you have to get from your (a) diet and/or (b) supplements. You may have shortage of the necessary vitamins and minerals because of a disease, poor nutrition, pregnancy, or because your body cannot absorb such substances properly. That is why you need multivitamins that have increased their potency by combining several vitamins and minerals together in one dosage.

Multivitamins with minerals are available in the forms of capsules, tablets, injections, and liquids. But, like other prescription drugs, improper use of multivitamins with minerals can also lead to ailments. Keep these pointers in mind to protect yourself:

1. DO NOT OVERDOSE. Even though supplements can be bought over-the-counter, professional advice from your doctor or an experienced herbalist is needed to determine the appropriate dose. Remember that your body requires only small amounts of these substances, especially minerals, so going overboard in its ingestion can be harmful.

2. DO NOT CHOKE. If the multivitamins with minerals you are taking is not of the chewy variety, it is imperative for you to drink a glass of water for every dose that you take.

3. MEASURE CORRECTLY. If you will be taking your supplement in its liquid state, do not guess how much you will take without the aid of proper measuring devices. Use a spoon that can measure doses, or cups that have the same function.

4. TAKE MULTIVITAMINS DURING OR AFTER EATING. Food helps absorb and transport the multivitamins you take to the cells in your body that need it most. That is why you should avoid taking such substances on an empty stomach. Better eat before you take any kind of medication or supplement.

5. INFORM YOURSELF. Keep yourself updated to the latest researches about vitamins and minerals. Some manufacturers recall their products because of side effects and other such problems, so you need to constantly update yourself. Know if the supplement you are taking is bringing you more harm than good.

A Practical Guide on Complete Multivitamins

Many of us have a hard time deciding what the best multivitamin is for us. This is completely confusing and difficult especially when there are so many bottles to scan in the various aisles of the health food store or the supermarket. One must consider every variable ? the vitamins and minerals listed, potency, purity, safety, storage, freshness and of course, cost. How then could one take the risk of making an uninformed choice? It is always wise to have some help.

Therefore this article will serve as a guide for selecting the complete multivitamins you need. This will assist in the decisions you make when you are looking for that multivitamin for you and your family.

Remember that the daily recommended allowance for the intake of vitamins and minerals is somehow insufficient. Over the years, Americans relied on the US RDS or the Recommended Dietary Allowance to come up with a chart of how much nutritional multivitamin supplement they should intake. Generally, this can be answered by the individual who is taking the vitamins and minerals because he or she alone knows how much dosage is intended for him or her.

Standards by the RDA may have been updated throughout the years but there has been an establishment of the minimum level of the required vitamins, minerals and nutrients which an adult must take in a daily basis. This is for him to enjoy a long life because of his health.

Nutritionists and scientist believe that the recommended dosages from the RDA may not be sufficient enough in order to prevent the diseases that could combat a person?s health. In addition to this, various conducted researches have shown that the medical industry has become resistant to the recommended supplements.

It is interesting to note that the best multivitamins are those meeting the pharmaceutical standards. At the moment, there are no FDA regulations which require supplement manufacturers to comply on the standard practices while the manufacturing of the vitamins is taking place. The FDA is responsible in correcting this but ironically, there is no guarantee that the label on the bottle is what exactly is in the bottle.

The next question one must consider is whether the vitamin supplements are safe to take. Well, for one a vast majority of the ingredients in multi vitamins are safe to begin with. The case will be different if these are taken at once. The main concern though is the impact of these components when taken together.

For example, pure Vitamin A or what is known as Retinol is an essential nutrient which can become toxic once taken in large amounts. Research shows that Vitamin A is a leading cause in birth defects. But there is good news to this. A benefit of Vitamin A is realized through its alternative which is Beta Carotene. It may not have as much toxic properties but is transforms Vitamin A when needed.

Iron is another essential nutrient which most multivitamin has. However, it must also be regarded with caution despite its importance on the human body. For one, iron deficiency results to problems in the immune system like heart disease and lack of cognitive ability.

There are optimal daily intake lists that can be acquired from your doctor so you can know how much vitamins and minerals should be taken every day. Remember, the dosage varies from one person to another so it?s best that you ask for your doctor's opinion.

Multivitamins - A Quick Guide

The reason for taking a vitamin pill is because it makes up for the nutrients that are lacking in the foods we eat. Multivitamin supplements are so called because they contain several different vitamins or minerals instead of just the one. Furthermore, a multivitamin and mineral combination can provide some extra coverage in case of possible deficiencies.

The liquid multivitamin variety consists of a unique multivitamins formula which is suspended in liquid. This can be useful for people who can't or won't swallow the pills in the conventional way, maybe children or seniors.

Apparently more than 50% of Americans take a multivitamin of some sort, in the belief that it will help protect them against serious disease and other health problems. The experts in the health world are in disagreement over the usefulness of these supplements. A number of doctors and nutritionists say that a multivitamin a day is absolutely vital to maintain a healthy body, while some say that with the correct diet and exercise, there is no need for extra vitamins.

For a long time, consumers have been subjected to media advertising which asks them to believe that there is a perfect multivitamin which will suffice for all their health

supplementation needs. The expert view is that the daily amount of a good multivitamin consists of more than one pill. Research has been done which suggests that a good supplement routine includes a multivitamin supplement, extra vitamin C, flax seed oil, and also an antioxidant.

The good news is there is a lot you can do to avoid illness with the right nutrition and vitamins and this is a good place to start if you want to change your lifestyle for the better. In my opinion the best plan will always be to try and get your vitamins from your food. If this is not possible for some reason, {maybe your lifestyle or circumstances won't allow it} then I would definitely go ahead and take a daily multivitamin.

The Importance Of Multivitamins And Vitamins For Women

Whether you're trying to have a baby, already pregnant, going through menopause or worried about osteoporosis, it's worthwhile for you as a woman to consider the importance taking a multivitamin to create and maintain optimal health. But why would you want to take a supplement if you can get all your nutrients from your diet? Nutritionists say it is possible? and preferred? to get all your nutrients from the food you consume. And in a perfect world, this would be true for everybody.

But it's not a perfect world. Today's world finds people in fast-paced, hectic and stressed lifestyles. It has become harder for people to eat healthy, nutritionally balanced meals, and even more so to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly every day.

This is especially true for women, who are often trying to juggle family, career, homeschooling, education, other relationships, housework and more. In order to achieve good health and to prevent stress, fatigue, infections and disease, women need to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they require. Yet for most women in most societies, a diet alone just won't cut it. This is why taking a multivitamin or a combination of the most important vitamins and minerals is so beneficial for most women.

A multivitamin will ensure you're getting all the recommended daily dosages of vitamins and minerals that are missing from your diet. While a general multivitamin is fine, you can actually find multivitamins specifically tailored to women's needs at different stages in their life, such as pregnancy and the postmenopausal stage.

One particular time for all women to take multivitamin is right before and during pregnancy. Even if you are confident in your healthy eating habits, it's still recommended to take prenatal vitamins, as your body requires even more nutrients to grow a healthy baby? specifically folic acid. Folic acid, or folate, is required not only for healthy tissue growth and red cell formation, but also to prevent birth defects, especially in early pregnancy. Many women today don't get enough folic acid from their diet, and taking a multivitamin with enough folic acid (400 micrograms) is recommended by most doctors.

Another important mineral for women is calcium. Calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth and to prevent osteoporosis later on in life, a condition that affects many postmenopausal women. Many women report not having enough dairy on a regular basis because of either allergies (lactose intolerance) or dietary restrictions. While calcium can be found in other foods such as salmon, green leafy vegetables and soy, it's still difficult to get enough through food alone, which is why a multivitamin containing calcium is so beneficial.

Other important vitamins and minerals for all women include vitamin K, for blood clotting; vitamin C, for tissue growth and repair as well as adrenal function; and iron, for healthy cells and muscles. Another recommendation is the vitamin B complex, which is great for regulating certain bodily functions as well as reducing stress.

While you can certainly take all of these vitamins and minerals on their own, it?s much more convenient for women to take a multivitamin containing all the necessary nutrients in one little package. Make sure you do your research when considering a multivitamin, as not all are created equal. Quality varies, for one thing, as does the amounts of each vitamin and mineral. Further, make sure you select a multivitamin that is best suited to your needs and stage in life. Once you do, you are on your way to a healthier and stronger you.

See multivitamins for women

Improve Your Health with Multivitamins

Multivitamin supplements are an excellent source of the daily recommended allowance of vitamins that you can't get from a good diet alone. Food is no longer as nutritious as it once was. There are fewer farms, and more crops are being grown on less land. Have you heard of any new farms being opened lately? Or an area being cleared to make room for a farm? Probably not. That is why a daily multivitamin is so important. Just take a pill and you have your daily needs in one easy swallow. Multivitamins are the most convenient way to get vitamins into your body that would otherwise be left out. In this article you will learn what multivitamins do for the body and what the consequences of a vitamin deficiency are. After reading this you will understand why it is crucial to supplement your diet with a multivitamin.

Vitamins are food substances that aid your body's essential biochemical reactions. There are thirteen known vitamins that are classified as either fat soluble or water soluble. Fat soluble vitamins can be stored in the body for months and come in the forms A, D, E, and K. Your body is able to store enough water soluble vitamins to last only a few weeks. The nine water soluble vitamins are C, B1, B2, B6, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid.

If you eat a healthy diet with plenty of whole foods and the correct balance of proteins, fats, and carbs, you may be fine. However, if your diet is lacking you should consider investing in a basic multivitamin. The problems that can result from a vitamin deficiency could fill a book. Some of the most basic signs of a deficiency are a greater tendency to feel stressed or sick. Cigarette smoke also depletes vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin E, and selenium, so if you smoke, make sure that your multivitamin contains these ingredients.

Bodybuilders need vitamins to build muscle and burn fat efficiently. Even though 99.9% of the world's population is not bodybuilders, they should still take a multivitamin. Women of child-bearing age, people over age 60, pregnant or breast-feeding women, strict vegetarians, people on weight loss diets, and anyone not eating a balanced diet will all benefit greatly from them. But keep in mind that even if you take a multivitamin, you still need to eat a healthy diet. Foods such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains provide fiber and many other antioxidants not found in any type of pill.

Look for 100% of the daily value for vitamins D, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid, and at least 20 micrograms of vitamin K. A multivitamin should not cost more than a few cents a day. You don't need anything fancy to reap the benefits of daily multivitamin intake. And remember: taking more than 100% of the daily value is not good for you either. In fact, it is harmful because large doses of copper can interfere with your absorption of zinc and vice versa. Large doses of vitamin A and zinc are also worse for you than not taking one at all. I hope that you now understand the basics of multivitamins and will make an educated decision the next time you shop for vitamins.

Insulin helps take sugar from the blood to cells in the body. Too much sugar in the system can result in damage to various parts of the body, like the eyes and the heart.

A recent U.S. study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at the effect of a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement in people between the ages of 45 and 64, one-third of whom had type 2 diabetes. The results showed that those with diabetes who took a supplement were in dramatically better health in terms of fewer infections and days absent from work due to infection, than those with diabetes who did not take a supplement. Infections included things like respiratory infections, flu and gastrointestinal infections.

The researchers concluded that the positive effect on infection reduction was

likely due to the influence of the supplement on any existing nutritional deficiencies the participants had, that were related to poorly controlled diabetes. They suggest that a multivitamin could be of benefit to people who are overweight, have diabetes, who may have poor nutrition or who have underlying diseases.

If you're concerned about not getting an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet on a daily basis, consider taking a daily supplement like Centrum. Customer Reviews
Good content but way too big
For seniors, who sometimes have a hard time swallowing, creating such a big pill seems ill advised. I did not realize that it would be so much bigger than the regular Centrum Silver but it is. I was totally surprised when it took the bottle out of the box. I tried breaking it but it left rough edges which made it equally hard to swallow.
I decided I would call them to complain, which I did. They told me that it had to be big so that it could contain the calcium. They suggested that when you cut the pill, you polish the edges to make it smoother or that you grind it up. I told them that I really was not interested in doing that much work just to take a supplement. I thought that they might offer me, at least, a coupon for regular Centrum but they did not even take my name.
Wyeth, now owned by Pfizer, is apparently not interested in good customer relations. Not only am I advising that you not buy Centrum Silver Ultra Women's supplement, but I am suggesting you do what I am going to do, look for a store brand that has similar contents of regular Centrum Silver, save a few bucks and put that money toward the purchase of a calcium supplement.

Excellent Product
for those of us who are of "certain age." This covers most of the essential vitamin and mineral bases, and you don't have to add too many more supplements beyond calcium and fish oil and maybe CoQ10. Unlike another reviewer, I have had no problem taking this capsule, and I do not find it to be over-sized. Amazon's price is right. I think it's a good deal in every respect.

Simply the best Women's Multi
My wife shopped multi-vitamins very hard and these have the best overall content. Because of the high level of calcium, she is able to take one less calcium supplement which means one less pill to swallow. Overall content is excellent. The best price is right here on Amazon.

New Chapter Organics Every Woman II, Tablets 180 ea

New Chapter Organics Every Woman II
Product Description
quite good
Well balanced formula, no preformed vitamin A; it gives more energy without any troubled stomach, cravings or increased appetite (which I always get when taking vitamins).
Great price on these supplements
My wife swears by these vitamin supplements, but doesn't like the price at the local stores. Shopping on Amazon saved her $20-30 vs. prices in the local vitamin stores. Compared to some other online stores, we saved money here. Won't go retail for these vitamins again.

Rainbow Light Just Once Prenatal One Multivitamin Tablets, 90-Count Bottle

Rainbow Light Just Once Prenatal One Multivitamin

Product Description
Dietary Supplement.
I do "HATE" large vitamins, so I started a fight when my pediatrician/husband bought them for me... Now, I'm online trying to purchase more.

CONS: It's true, they're on the big side. But strangely, I don't have any problems swallowing them (I did with other ones). Also, they leave an aftertaste--as another reviewer said. But it goes away easily (juice, cracker, etc), and I usually take them with meals to improve absorption.

PROS: They're easily digestible (I didn't have any of the sickness or heartburn suggested), it's once a day, and above all, it's all NATURAL--which is important for me.

THE POINT: I didn't find any natural vitamins that were as easy to take.

If you want any regular pre-natal vit, I'd go for the prescription ones: You take them once daily. They are small, tasteless, safe and very-very affordable.
Not only for those Pregnant or trying to concieve....PCOS sufferers here's your supplement!!
I suffer from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) which causes infertility and has a multitude of syptoms and other conditions associated: obesity, diabetes, cysts on ovaries, infertility, either severe periods or no periods, and also an over production of Testosterone leading to excess hair in places like a woman's chin, while hair loss is also part of it. It's easily treated with medication and healthy diet, when caught early. When caught early the fear of infertility is mitigated somewhat.

Since I'm now medicated and starting to move into a healthy diet and my health is in order to the point where I am fertile. I am not intending on getting pregnant any time soon, nor have I ever had a child. But when I was looking for supplements to compliment my more healthy regime, I found out as a PCOS sufferer I had special needs such as an increase in a few vitamins more than others. I didn't want to sit there taking 8 pills in a day, so I was looking for an all-in-one remedy (a multivitamin) which met my needs, such as an increase in biotin, folic acid, selenium, vitamin E...there are a few more, but these were the most vital. Since PCOS is directly related with fertility and when I looked at prenatal vitamins ---prenatal vitamins were basically the remedy I was looking for.

After deciding I needed to find a prenatal vitamin as they are in the range of supplements I'm looking for, I searched reviews on baby websites, about three of them. Rainbow Light was hands down the most popular of them all. I decided to give them a chance after reading the reviews, going to the official site, and also looking carefully at their supplemental precentage and ingredients. It met my needs and then some. I was then concerned on the pill intake. I'm not one to schedule my life around my pills or vitamins, so I wanted to find a one-a-day prenatal vitamin. Bless you, Rainbow Light!!

I have all I need to compliment and aid in managing my PCOS even if it's mainly directed to those pregnant or looking to be pregnant. This is the best product out there for me and my condition and I do recommend any other PCOS sufferers to think of adding this vitamin to your regime.

I've also complimented this with Nordic Naturals Complete Omega 3-6-9 and Vitamin Shoppe's Psyllium Husk with Acidophilus. The Vitamin Shoppe product is used because I am on a high protein diet considering I'm allergic to gluten and need to eat low carbohydrates. It's a God send in keeping me regular.

To get back to Prenatal One...this is not only for the pregnant ladies or those trying to get pregnant. It will be beneficial to any woman, it's easy on the stomach. It is daunting to swallow such a big pill, I think only of the benefits and gulp. ^_^
Love these!
This is my first time taking a prenatal vitamin, so I have nothing to compare my experience to...but I have to say that I love these vitamins! I spent a lot of time reading reviews for different brands/types of prenatal vitamins, before deciding on these. I love the fact that they're all natural, & made from actual food/plants rather than synthetics. And I love the fact that they haven't added any unnecessary dyes, or artificial ingredients, etc.

From my research, this prenatal vitamin seems to have just about all of the nutrients that you'll need to have: before, during, and after pregnancy, (while breast feeding). Except that you'll have to get extra Calcium from another source, and if you really want to play it safe you can always increase your iron intake...but these are minor details. I think that the price is great...even if they are a little more expensive than some of the other prenatal vitamins, they are worth it for the quality, & can you really put a price on having a healthy baby? :)

I have been taking these vitamins for a month now, and I haven't suffered from ANY side-effects, at all. Nor have I noticed an after-taste, or any other kind of adverse side effect. They haven't given me heartburn. And they don't cause me to feel sick, or nauseous...which I was worried about, since a lot of women complain that prenatal vitamins *in general* make them feel nauseous. But I haven't had any problems, what-so-ever. And these vitamins contain natural ingredients that will actually help with your morning sickness...so that's a bonus! :)

They are a little on the large side, but with all of the healthy nutrients packed into them, I don't really see that as being a bad thing! Plus, as far as I can tell...most prenatal vitamins are large, unless you're taking multiple smaller doses each day. If that's what you're looking for...Rainbow Light has another prenatal vitamin that you can take 6 times a day, & they are smaller. But I haven't had any trouble swallowing these. Some people have mentioned that they have an easier time taking them with Orange Juice, but I haven't had a problem taking them, with whatever I happen to be drinking at the time. And I've taken them with & without food, so that hasn't been an issue either...they don't make me feel sick, either way.

They also don't prevent me from sleeping, & the bottom line is that I would highly recommend these, since they have made the whole experience a positive one for me! On a side note, my husband has been taking the Men's One a Day multi-vitamins, also by Rainbow Light, ever since we decided to conceive...since they promote a healthy reproductive system in men. They're a lot smaller than the prenatal vitamins, obviously...& he also hasn't suffered from any side effects. So I would recommend those as well, for those of you who are planning on conceiving anytime in the near future!

<georss:box>-23.327995 144.755859 90 23.818359</georss:box>

Rainbow Light Women's One Multivitamin 90 tablets

Rainbow Light Women's One Multivitamin

Product Description

Dietary Supplement. For years I have been taking Centrum and One a day w/o really feeling the effects of them. Then after reading The Natural Cures I learned that most of the vitamins on the shelf are synthetic and you don't absorb them. I choose this one b/c although it wasn't organic like he recommended it was all natural. The first day I tool these I felt a huge difference. W/i a week I was more alert, had more energy, better memory and no menstrual pains. I have recommended this vitamin to all my friends. I love it!

The BEST!

These are the best ever, they actually make you feel better and with more energy. I absolutely love them and wouldn't take any other. They are all natural and have extra B vitamins as well as others. FYI, they are large pills, they don't taste the best and just a word of caution, never take them on an empty stomach, it could make you nauseous. Remember, they will make you feel wonderful for the rest of the day!!!

The Best Vitamins

I have tried a lot of different multi-vitamins on the market. Many of them made me very sick even when eating food. Some other vitamins like GNC's were so hard to swallow and they tasted horrible.

Rainbow Light vitamins didn't make me feel sick at all. They aren't hard to swallow and the best part is you only have to take 1 a day. I can't say enough good things about these vitamins. I LOVE THEM!!! Both my hubby and I use them.

Men's One Energy Multivitamin, 90 tablets

As a chemist, I am very aware that some forms of vitamins are better absorbed than others. Rainbow Light's Men's One Multi is very good.

I must start off by saying that no multivitamin is perfect. There is no multivitamin out there that has all vitamins and minerals in the ideal forms, nor is there is a multivitamin that will have all your daily nutritional needs in every single area. Supplementation from another source is still going to be necessary... although a good multivitamin can really cut down the cost because if it's a good multi, then one will not have to supplement much.

First, I want to start off saying that it boggles my mind that Amazon does not provide the nutrition label for any of the supplements that they sell. One has to either go to the store and find the supplement, or find it on another website. Amazon needs to fix this problem.

Now, about this multivitamin. The things I really like about this multivitamin is that it is 100% natural, and a food-based multivitamin. Nothing in this vitamin is synthetic. It doesn't contain any objectionable ingredients like titanium dioxide, nor does it contain any fillers.

Another nice thing about this vitamin is that it contains probiotics, vegetable extract, saw palmetto, lycopene, etc.

Probably the best feature of this vitamin is that while most vitamin brands use cheap forms of minerals, this multi is mainly good with the only exceptions being calcium and magnesium. Other than calcium and magnesium, all minerals are in their most absorb-able form, either as the citrate form or the amino acid chelate form. The forms you do not want to see are oxide forms of minerals, or the carbonate form for calcium. Unfortunately this multi does have calcium as calcium carbonate and magnesium as magnesium oxide. But the fortunate thing about it, is that the amounts of calcium and magnesium it uses are very negligible, so one will still want to supplement calcium and magnesium elsewhere, and from there get one that contains either calcium citrate/malate (not calcium carbonate, eggshell calcium, or coral calcium) along with magnesium citrate.

This multivitamin also contains vitamin A as 50% beta-carotene, which is the safest form of vitamin A. I would prefer that all of the vitamin A would be in the beta-carotene form, but as I said earlier, no multi is perfect.

Selenium is in its active form as selenomethionine, but unfortunately the label doesn't state whether or not it is in the L-selenomethionine form or the D-selenomethionine form. I am assuming it's L-selenomethionine, but anyone who has taken an organic chemistry or biochemistry course would know that the chirality of a molecule can make all the difference in the world. But this multi contains 200mcg of selenium, which the latest research says is the optimal amount of selenium to get the most health benefits.

To me, none of the short comings of this vitamin are really that big of a deal, especially since I haven't really found anything much better. Most of the minerals are in their ideal form, which is fantastic, it has vegetable extracts, and it has at least 50% of vitamin A in the beta-carotene form.

Now, as I said earlier, there is still some supplements that will need to be taken to overcome the short comings of this multi. This multivitamin contains 800IU of vitamin D, which according to my doctor, the average adult should be taking about 2000IUs daily. So I supplement vitamin D to get the other 1200IU. Another thing, is this vitamin contains negligible amounts of calcium & magnesium (which in this case, this is good because calcium & magnesium are in their undesirable forms), so one may want to find a calcium & magnesium supplement, in their ideal forms.

Other than that, everything else in this multi-vitamin is really good and it is rare to find a multi of this quality.

Saying everything I just, there is something that can make or break everything about this vitamin. And that is that this multi is in a tablet form. The ideal form of a vitamin is either liquid or capsule because tablets can be hard to digest, and in some cases, some manufacturers have been found that their vitamins don't dissolve fast enough (and yes, this even happens to expensive brands that you'd find in a health food store).

To find this out, get a glass of vinegar and heat it to about 98 degrees farenheit (approximately the same temp as the human body) and let this tablet sit in there for about 30 minutes. If it dissolves, it should dissolve just fine in the stomach, if it doesn't, then it is junk. I haven't done this, but every good thing about this vitamin would be wasted if it doesn't break down.

Great Multivitamin for Men!
I ordered these for my husband, when we decided that we wanted to try to have a baby in the near future. I'd ordered the Rainbow Light prenatal vitamins for myself, and when I saw that they had a multivitamin for men that promotes a healthy reproductive system...I thought that it was worth a try! Especially since we'd been looking for a good one-a-day multivitamin, regardless of our conception plans. So, it took a little while for them to arrive in the mail, & even though they were listed as being in stock, it took a couple of days before they mailed them out to us...

However, with that aside...it was worth the wait! The price is great, for the quality. They're a little more expensive than some other brands, but the saying is true...you get what you pay for! These vitamins are all natural, and they are made from food/plants rather than from synthetics...which is great! They have the d-alpha instead of the dl-alpha...which is really hard to find in a muti-vitamin these days, (and what that means is that it contains the natural form of vitamin E, and not the synthetic form that most multivitamins have).

It's also low in iron, which is IMPORTANT for men, especially since iron can cause a whole slew of health problems for men. It doesn't contain any preservatives or dyes, or other unnecessary ingredients, and yet it contains a lot of the essential ingredients! My Husband has no problem taking them each day, and he hasn't had any side effects what-so-ever. He said that he would highly recommend them...and we both highly recommend the Rainbow Light brand, on a whole! We will continue to buy this brand, again and again and again. :)
One of the few multi's with natural, not synthetic, E
It's getting harder to find a multi with d-alpha instead of dl-alpha.

This one has d-alpha, not the synthetic E.
