Mystery Shopping Tips: Read Shop Details!

Mystery Shop details can impact your ability to get higher paying Mystery Shops. Read over all relevant information pertaining to any shop, before deciding to accept or decline work. Shop details include: location, scenario details, specific requirements, any required purchases to be reimbursed, timeframes, and what the shop pays. Decisions you make about accepting or declining Mystery Shops impact your ability to get higher paying mystery shops.
Important points in Choosing Shops
It is important not to decline shops too quickly. Most Mystery Shopping job boards are set up to remove any shops you decline from your offerings. It is far better to just let a job sit in your offerings,than decline it. Make sure you will not be out of pocket when you finish a Mystery Shop. It is also important to bear in mind the length of time it will take before you are reimbursed. Do not over extend yourself, so you do not have the cash flow available for a more lucrative reimbursement shop that may pop up next week. While I do accept initial low paying shops with new companies, to get my foot in the door, and show my skills, I do so only if they are convenient for me, and I at least break even. Note: If there are any details you are unsure of, email the provider before accepting, and keep a copy of the response as proof of the clarification you were given. It can take a long time to get a negative comment removed from your file, without written proof to back you up.

Job Boards Give Higher Success Rates

Most Mystery Shopping Companies have Job Boards,and they will also send you automatic emails when shops are available in your area. Some shoppers, do get shops through the emails they receive, but I advise being proactive in your search for shops for greater success.

Established Job Board Search Routines Yeild Higher Results

Do you truly want mystery shopping jobs? Shop notification emails are sent out to many shoppers at once. You may receive an email notifying you of an available shop, but by the time you get to the job board, another shopper may have already accepted the shop. Make sure you bookmark each of your job boards, and check them on a regular basis. New shops are generally posted at the beginning of each month.

Since companies often add bonuses as deadlines approach, some shoppers will chance missing out on jobs, and wait to apply for jobs till later in the month. Unfortunately, waiting for emails,or bonuses, can cause you to miss out on some excellent opportunities. Do whatever is right for you, depending on the number of jobs you are getting, and the proximity of the jobs. For me, I'd rather apply for a lower paying job, that is on my way to or from another shop or personal errand, than miss out entirely. Lower paying shops can turn out to be great stepping stones to higher paying jobs.

What's Your Mystery Shopping Score?

Most mystery shopping companies maintain performance ratings for each shopper. Mystery shopping ratings are usually based on the quality of your reports,and how quickly you complete your assignments. Higher mystery shopping scores can make you the 'go to person' for jobs with a company. For example, I will often receive calls ahead of jobs being posted, and have been offered up to five times the pay for completing some jobs. On the other hand, low shopper scores can make it difficult for you to receive shops and can even result your being being deactivated from a mystery shopping company's system.

How to Increase Your Mystery Shopping Score

Mystery Shopping is fun and interesting, but it is also extremely serious business. Mystery Shopping is your opportunity to make changes for a wide variety of industries, from gas stations to cruise lines. Companies make important decisions based on the information mystery shoppers provide. Mystery shopping reports are used in reviewing employees and management. Reports can effect the future of an individual, and a company as a whole. This is one reason I am so happy when I can submit a positive report of great customer service, while I highly recommend keeping precise notes on any items you report that are not up to required standards. here are some key factors that can help increase your mystery shopping score,so you too can be a 'go to' mystery shopper.

Mystery Shopping - Six Keys to Higher Mystery Shopping Scores

1. Mystery Shopping Key- Reliability – Complete assigned mystery shops during agreed upon dates and timeframes. Companies depend on reports being there when they are needed. If a problem keeps you from completing an assignment, let the company know immediately,and either reschedule your shop or cancel it. Be absolutely certain you will be able to successfully complete a shop during the specified date and/or time before accepting it. Avoid rescheduling or cancelling shops.
2. Mystery Shopping Key - Anonymity – Mystery Shoppers must remain anonymous. Many franchises will alert their employees that mystery shoppers are expected-if your 'cover is blown' your report is useless,and you may not get paid. Never tell anyone you are mystery shopping. Do not record information in direct view of any employee. However,some companies do also offer revealed shops, where you have the opportunity to reward good service. If you are required to conduct this type of shop, there will be specific notes in the shop details.
3. Mystery Shopping Key- Preparation – Mystery Shoppers need to prepare for each shop in advance. Review all the documentation provided by the company before heading out to complete any shop to make sure your report will be accurate. You'll want to be sure you are evaluating the correct location, and reporting all the required information,according to the scenario provided. Memorize the standards being evaluated. Some companies even provide helpful quizzes to help you memorize the standards. Print out the questionnaire, so you can complete it, unobserved, immediately after the shop in a nearby parking lot. Don't wait to get home to record details. Make sure your equipment is working-pen writes,batteries charged,etc.
4. Mystery Shopping Key- Observation - Observation is a matter of skill, and one you can develop. Your senses, and memory must be sharp.
5. Mystery Shopping Key- Professionalism – Have a positive, optimistic, and enthusiastic attitude. Like breeds like. If you go in with a positive attitude, you are more likely to receive the type of customer service you are looking for, this makes reports much easier to write. You also need to wear business casual attire, unless otherwise noted, in order to be taken seriously as a typical, eligible customer.
6. Mystery Shopping Key- Timely Reporting – Complete all shops on the agreed upon date, and submit accurate, detailed reports on time. Write any comments, using software with a built in spell check,then paste them into the report. Usually, shop reports must be submitted on-line within 12 hours of shop completion. Some shops may require reporting sooner - read each company's expectations, and notes, to be sure your report is accepted. Repeated late reports can result in your profile being de-activated. If you have a problem getting the report to submit, notify the company immediately, and email a copy of your notes to yourself so you have time stamped proof. You might also want to take a screen shot of your report.
7. Mystery Shopping Key- Write Professional Reports - Make sure your writing meets the required standards of the report. High end dining shops,for example have a very precise format. Be objective - report exactly what you see and hear for example -'the glasses bounced when the associate threw them into the box' vs.'the associate was furious'. Many stores have video tapes which they can view to verify your report. Write comments using software with a built in spell check,then paste them into your report. Keep a copy of all the details of reports for at least six months, in case your report is questioned. Keeping report details is especially important for forms with drop down lists. I was once asked to verify a fast food shop three months after the report was submitted with answers to questions that were not even on the report.
Using these seven tips have helped me become a 'go to' mystery shopper for several companies,netting me much higher pay for mystery shops. It’s your turn: what tips or questions do you have about qualifying for higher paying mystery shops?

You have an excellent forum, but your "blink" may be driving people away. I'm a top-rated mystery shopper in Canada, who writes reviews and tips for mystery shoppers. You almost got a big thumbs down.

Why you were almost black-listed:

The first link in the confirmation email I received results in a popup form asking me to re-register. Seemed fishy, but … OK, you're not asking for money, but… seems kind of strange.

Then a second pop-up- this one about signing up with survey companies- 2nd pop up? Lights start to flash. Survey companies? Bells start to ring. This isn't what I'm here for! –Well, … you need to be compensated for your time … I look for a method to close or by-pass the box- There is no method to get past the survey sign-up! Sirens are going off!

Why Mystery Shop Forum is not Black Listed
I'm glad I gave you a second chance. I came back to my email, clicked the second link, and found your great forum. In addition to your forum, you have a comprehensive list of mystery shopping companies (albeit without links) that people can access at the bottom of the forum. Your forum is a great resource, don’t drive people away by bungling your marketing.

While the survey opportunities, are a good idea, people need to have a choice. Mystery Shoppers, especially new ones are sometimes targeted by scam artists. Don’t fall for these! The following great tips can be applied to any mystery shopping emails where you are asked to send an amount of money. Here is an example from Doulas Stafford:

Douglas Stafford Posted the following on their site:

We have become aware of an email and/or gumtree.com mystery shopper job advert scam which is being circulated at the moment. The scam involves emails pretending to be from a Douglas Stafford employee, using Douglas Stafford imagery taken from our website.

The scam will typically ask you to take on an assignment and ask you to send money through a money transfer agency (e.g. Western Union) which can be reclaimed at a later date. These emails are in no way connected to Douglas Stafford Limited.
• If you receive an email that is not from a “@douglasstafford.com” email address, it is not genuine.
• If you receive an email asking you to send or transfer money, it is not genuine.
• If you have received an email but have not registered directly with Douglas Stafford, it is not genuine.
• If the email is poorly written, with broken English, it is not genuine.
• If a job advertisement does not ask you to apply via our website www.douglasstafford.com or directly by an “@douglasstafford.com” email address, it is not genuine.

Here's a good example of why its important to check job boards, even if a email doesn't list a shop in your area. I just got an email from Service X for a no purchase easy shop with drop down answers. The listing only showed the following locations:

* AB: AIRDRIE, CALGARY, COCHRANE, DRAYTON VALLEY, WETASKIWIN->
* NS: DARTMOUTH, HALIFAX->
* ON: ABERFOYLE->

I clicked the link, signed in, searched the job board by country and up popped a ton more locations including one in my area, plus shops in other provinces.

Caution: keep really good notes on file for drop-down shop forms. I've been queried on a multitude of things three months down the road after completing shops like these for a different company.

Mystery Shopping Six Tips For Making More Money on Eyeglass Shops

(ON) Do you kids need glasses? OHIP covers the cost of children's eye exams. Check if children's glasses qualify for the shop, that leaves the price of the eye exam in your pocket.
Use savings from work benefits packages to pay for your glasses. You still get paid up to $120 for your reports
Check online coupons & Valpak coupon savings. I once got free glasses, and was paid for the report.
Check CAA savings. The cost of a membership with CAA can pay for itself with incredible savings.
Offer to take a senior friend or relative for their eye exam and to get glasses. Do a good deed, and either offer them a 'rebate' of part of the money or a gift certificate. (ON Srs are covered for eye exams too.)
Check the bargain bin frames for greater savings. Often there may be a single pair left of a certain frame available at a reduced price.

It's the end of the month, and for mystery shoppers living in select areas, that means bonus time at many companies. If you passed up a shop because of it's low pay earlier in the month, go back & check to see if it's still there.

Gapbuster Worldwide is one of the first companies I started with. They have a clear straightforward training program. The report for one of their clients is mostly simple drop-down questions, BUT KEEP COPIOUS NOTES ON FILE for months (especially if you mention anything that could even be slightly misconstrued as a criticism.) This is the only company for which I have ever had my shops refuted. The locations for one client in particular, must have a lot riding on your evaluation.
