It’s only a short time away to the 7th annual Newcastle Vegan Festival.

This year is our 7th anniversary and hope to make the event a special day for everyone. If you have not attended one of our events before you will have the chance to watch amazing vegan speakers, demo’s and workshops, taste some fantastic vegan cuisine from around the world, and ultimately maybe learn how easy it is to live a more ethical, healthier and a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. If you have attended before you may see some familiar cruelty free business’s and a good selection of new start-ups.

Multi Award Winning Festival

Although Vegan Festival UK has been nominated for many awards over the years, we always got beat to the post by larger business, but last year we were asked to attend the prestigious national P.E.A Awards in London. It was huge honour to be a finalist among some of the UK’s leading sustainable companies, but hearing “The Winner Is Vegan Festival UK” was a little surreal. For more details on this amazing evening (P.E.A Awards), also this July 2nd 2018 we were chosen from a long list of festivals and events, to become the winner of Festival Of The Year 2018. That fact that we have been even nominated for these awards is fanatic, but becoming a finalist and then winning is awesome.

This year we have a huge selection of vegan business’s coming from across the UK. If you have ever been to one of our festivals before you may recognise some of our business’s, but this year we have many new companies you may have never heard of. Plant Powered Dad talking about the Pitfalls and Positives of Vegan Parenting This talk will be about the route to becoming vegan and then becoming a vegan parent, this will cover the pitfalls and the positives of becoming vegan yourself and your family becoming vegan.

12:15pm – Ben Hunt

Food choice is our best shot for change, here’s how we do it. Our culture is shifting toward greater acceptance of plant-based eating. The more we see plant-based foods presented as the default, wherever we eat, the more it reshapes our thinking about what a “normal” meal can look like. Whether it’s at a dinner table or in a dining hall, how we are presented food plays a big role in what we choose to eat. Vegan activist Ben Hunt explores the theory and practice around menu change, and how it can be a powerful tool in bringing about a vegan world sooner.

1:30pm Dispelling the Myths Around Veganism and How You Can be an Activist

Anna is the founder of North East Animal Rights, Anna will be talking about how she become vegetarian and then vegan, alongside how you can get involved in many areas of animal rights and how becoming vegan could completely change your lifestyle for the better. Veganism is everywhere now and it is our job to make sure people understand the benefits to themselves, the planet and the animals!

As a passionate foodie, you no doubt want to spend as much time as you can surrounded by delicious dishes and sumptuous snacks. If you’ve already actively pursued a career that will allow you to indulge in your passion for food, you’ve probably considered becoming a chef… until you realized that you wouldn’t be able to deal with the pressure and the fast-paced environment of a working kitchen. There’s no shame in not wanting to become a chef — not everybody wants to be shouted out by a Gordon Ramsay wannabe for making the smallest of mistakes!

To start a food blog that actually makes you some money, you must:

• Decide what type of food niche you wish to hone in on (eg., gluten, sugar-free, vegan, or frugal cooking).
• Come up with a blog name that relates to the food industry.
• The technical stuff… purchase a domain name, choose a suitable web host, install plugins, and set up an email list.

From Executive Producer James Cromwell and award-winning director Keegan Kuhn (Cowspiracy, What The Health) comes RUNNING FOR GOOD, the feature-length sports documentary narrated by Rich Roll (Finding Ultra), following world record marathon runner Fiona Oakes in her attempt not only to set a new global record in endurance racing, but to compete in the “toughest footrace on earth,” the Marathon Des Sables, a 250km race through the Sahara Desert.

Fiona Oakes has made a name for herself as a unique endurance runner. She is the fastest woman in the world to run a marathon on all seven continents, and the north pole, in both cumulative and elapsed time. Fiona’s achievements are made even more astounding due to the fact that she was told at age 14 that she would never walk properly, let alone ever run. She would undergo more than 17 radical knee surgeries which ultimately led to having her entire right kneecap removed. The process was agonizing, the rehab worse, the records she’s gone on to set even more astounding.

With overcoming her own adversity, Fiona’s true drive to achieve incredible feats of speed and human endurance are motivated by a deep desire to raise awareness for the plight of animals. Her achievements help fund a 450+ animal sanctuary that she takes care of every day.

Elizabeth King will outline our 6 simple steps to start you on your vegan journey including cooking tips, nutrition, eating out and dealing with family and friends. The Vegan Night School presents: Going Vegan, Staying Vegan. What the science tells us about how people change their lifestyles, and sometimes don’t, and what you can do to help others and yourself live aligned with your values. Come hear Dr Alex Lockwood (vegan academic and author of The Pig in Thin Air), Leigh Venus (vegan activist and Minimalists, Newcastle) and Ben Thorne (Anonymous for the Voiceless, The Vegan Night School) share what they’ve learnt from psychology, arts and practice in a fun, non-judgemental interactive session.

John Awen : Compassion = Veganism, Veganism = Compassion. John Awen has led an alternative lifestyle, extreme in many ways, including. Drug addiction, prison sentences, raising animals for slaughter and being diagnosed with advanced heart failure and given no time at all. Having been stabbed, shot and knowing how fragile this life is, John has overcome many dark phases and turned his life around and now openly and candidly shares his journey in the hope of helping others to realise how very precious this life is, not just for us, but for all life. This is one talk you do not want to miss.

Sea Shepherd : Sea Shepherd UK is a registered marine conservation charity whose primary mission is to end the destruction of habitats and illegal killing of wildlife around the UK’s coastline and across the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect marine ecosystems and species. We use innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities committed against marine wildlife. Sea Shepherd also engaging in campaigns to help defend and restore coastal and marine areas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately balanced oceanic ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.

As with our previous festivals the stall holders encourage you to try their wares, this normally comes in the form of food tasting or drinks. This year we will be handing some vegan goodies and vouchers to vegan restaurants in the area. As with most things that are free – first come first served.

We hope to make this event the largest event Sheffield has ever seen, but we can’t do this with out your support, so please take an hour out of your day on Saturday 28th September and support our cause.

While visiting Tynemouth Market this morning, we came across a vegan only cafe within the market itself, this amazing gem of a find made our sunny day out even brighter.

Square Roots Kitchen had a good selection of hot and cold snacks including vegan cheese on toast, sausage sandwich and a jackfruit sandwich.

We are huge fans of Supernatural Cafe in Newcastle upon Tyne, normally we go during the day so this was a nice treat to go on an evening when it was a lot more relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. The menu is so good we took a little while to decide what to go for. In the end my partner decided to go for the Signature dish which is oven roasted mushroom & aubergine lasagne and I decided to go for the margherita pizza as I have never tried that from supernatural before, I usually go for one of their amazing sandwiches. We also decided to get a side of the Rosemary chips which come with some mayo sauce. Then finally for dessert we decided to share a warm brownie which was accompanied by cream and Ice cream. They have just hired a new chef so we were invited to come along to see what we think of his new food and cooking. It it safe to say we both left with empty plates. my partner’s lasagne was accompanied with bread and a small side salad and not only did it look brilliantly presented it also tasted even better, so much to say it was one of the best lasagnes he had tasted. When it came to my choice I couldn’t decide between the burger and the pizza but went for the pizza in the end and glad I did as it tasted great.

When visiting the north east, you’re guaranteed to have a reet canny time and we promise you’ll receive a warm Geordie welcome when travelling our home town. We will be returning to one of our favorite Newcastle building, the Assembly rooms on Fenkle street, which we think is a beautiful venue steeped in history as far back as 1774.

We hope to make this event the largest event the north east has ever seen, but we can’t do this with out your support, so please take an hour out of your day on Sunday 1st of July and support our cause.
