Preliminary interrogation revealed his alleged involvement in terrorist activities, including recording ransom videos of kidnap victims.

He reportedly admitted to receiving ₦50,000 for his role in one operation.Investigations are ongoing to track down the alleged principal suspect, Yusuf Iliya Sani, and other accomplices.

In Zamfara, Sector 2 troops working with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team destroyed three IEDs planted along the Magami–Dansadau road.

The clearance operation was hailed by residents and road users, who welcomed the improved safety along the route.

Troops also recovered 73 rustled animals, 14 camels, 19 cows, and 40 shees abandoned by fleeing terrorists between Kombo and Gurusu villages.

The livestock has been secured in collaboration with local vigilantes.The military emphasized that these operations demonstrate its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks, eliminating explosive threats, and safeguarding lives and property across the North-West.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, announced the decision on Friday, stressing that the government’s priority is ensuring only high-quality solar products enter the Nigerian market.

“We can’t ban solar panel importation if we can’t produce locally,” Udeh explained, noting that domestic manufacturing capacity is still developing.

Dapo Olagunji, managing director of J.P. Morgan West Africa, says plans are underway to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria, with operations expected to commence before the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

Olagunji announced the plan at the Nigeria–Asia Financial Connectivity Dialogue in Singapore on October 8.

According to a statement on Thursday, the dialogue was convened by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collaboration with J.P. Morgan, Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) and FMDQ Group.

The proposed merchant bank would mark a new development in J.P. Morgan’s presence in Nigeria, as the country seeks to deepen its financial markets and attract international investment.

The announcement came during a series of engagements by Olayemi Cardoso, CBN governor, with financial institutions and market stakeholders in Singapore ahead of the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok.

On September 15, J.P. Morgan included Nigeria in its new emerging markets index, assigning a 7.4 percent weighting to the West African nation.

The index, also known as the Government Bond Index–Emerging Markets Edge (GBI-EM Edge), which tracks local-currency government bonds across frontier, launched at the end of September.

The development comes nearly 11 years after Nigeria was removed from J.P. Morgan’s GBI-EM in 2015.

A fresh wave of anti-migrant violence has broken out in South Africa following a July court ruling which made way for asylum seekers to access applications, despite how they entered the country.

Police said at least 24 vehicles have been set ablaze and foreign-owned shops looted in unrest erupted in Soweto and Durban on Thursday.

The demonstration turned violent following allegations that a foreign national had assaulted one of the protesters in Durban.

Three foreign nationals were arrested in connection with the alleged assault, police said.

Protesters gathered outside a government refugee reception centre in Durban demanding that it stop accepting asylum applications.

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse crowds as businesses in the city centre shut their doors.

In Soweto, gunshots were also reported during confrontations between residents and foreign shopkeepers.

On Wednesday, the inter-ministerial committee on migration (IMC) said the five refugee reception offices around the country had been overwhelmed following the directive.

Following the protests, the home affairs department on Friday said it would change the way it would comply with the court ruling as the implementation process had presented “unforeseen challenges”.

The department did not give details on how it would apply these changes but noted that it would still abide by the court ruling.

South Africa has experienced repeated outbreaks of xenophobic violence, often targeting migrants from African countries.

This year alone, Nigeria has repatriated around 2,000 citizens from the former apartheid country in flights facilitated by the federal government and private individuals.

Subsidy return could push petrol price to N2,000/litre, Oyedele warns

Taiwo Oyedele, minister of finance, has warned that the exchange rate could hit N3,000 to the dollar within months, while petrol could cost at least N2,000 per litre if the government reinstates subsidy.

Oyedele spoke on Thursday at a news conference on petrol subsidy in Abuja.

The minister’s argument comes amid recent calls for the return of the subsidy by labour unions, as presidential aspirants in the 2027 elections also propose to reintroduce the same policy.

“Our estimate is that the exchange rate could approach N3,000 to the dollar within months, and so-called subsidised petrol would cost at least N2,000 a litre. That is well above what Nigerians pay today,” the minister said.

“A subsidy does not lower the cost of fuel. It only changes how it is paid and when. Nigerians have paid that bill before, in scarcity, in inflation and in a collapsing currency.

“However it is described, a subsidy must be financed: through salaries and pensions not paid on time, through higher taxes, or through the printing of money. Each of these has done great harm before.”

The minister said providing immediate relief at the expense of long-term economic stability would be the most expensive way for the government to spend money.

“We remain open to ideas. But any credible proposal should answer three questions. What will it cost? How will it be funded sustainably? And what pump price will it deliver? We will engage in good faith with any proposal that shows its arithmetic,” he said.

‘SUBSIDY REMOVAL RELEASED N15.8 TRILLION INTO FEDERATION ACCOUNT’

The minister said the removal of petrol subsidy had released “N15.8 trillion” into the federation account between “June 2023 and December 2025”.

“Of that, 10.4 trillion went to states and local governments,” he said.

Oyedele also said the federal government is considering measures to eliminate illegal levies that increase transportation and logistics costs, to alleviate the effect of subsidy removal.

“Working with the states under the 2025 tax reform laws, we are reining in the road taxes and levies that inflate fares and logistics costs,” he said.

“We are increasing funding for cash transfers to the most vulnerable households, and for subsidised credit to small businesses and consumers”.

According to the minister, the federal government is also reducing regulatory costs that contribute to the cost of doing business and indirectly drive up the prices of goods and services.

“Better traffic and logistics management. Traffic management agencies will improve the flow of traffic, especially in major urban centres to reduce fuel consumption. Also, NIPOST’s newly launched address codes will help make logistics more efficient and cheaper,” Oyedele added.

On Thursday, the presidency said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has agreed to suspend its petrol retail profit margin and sell the product at cost for the next 30 days.

Wike threatens ‘no-work, no-pay’ for FCT teachers joining NLC strike

Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has directed the council chairmen in the nation’s capital to enforce a strict “no-work, no-pay” policy against workers that participate in the ongoing indefinite strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

Wike, made the remark on Friday after meeting with chairmen of the six area councils in Abuja, describing the mass action as “political and baseless”.

According to NAN, the minister said he has directed the council leadership to clamp down on unapproved absences.

“We have directed the chairmen of the area councils to call their teachers and state clearly: if anybody participates in this, we will implement no-work, no-pay,” he said.

“Enough is enough; we cannot continue with this.”

The minister rejected the rationale behind the industrial action, asserting that all legitimate demands raised by the teaching body, including promotions and operational matters, had been substantially resolved or were actively being implemented.

“We want to state categorically and let it be known to the public: this so-called strike declaration is political, and we will not accept it.

“There is no basis for anybody to call for a strike. We don’t have any issue with the Local Education Authorities or primary schools. Everything we have agreed on, we are implementing,” he said.

Wike noted that secondary school teachers and other key union segments had distanced themselves from the strike action, recognising that the demands were already being met.

Addressing the political underpinnings of the shutdown, the minister directly challenged the political neutrality of the local NLC leadership.

He alleged that the union chairperson was a former candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last February FCT area council elections.

“You can see his interest. He is trying to ensure the FCT is in crisis as a political tool, telling voters that pupils are at home. We will not accept that blackmail,” he said.

“If you want to involve yourself in politics, you are free to do so, but excuse yourself from holding union leadership so you don’t politicise it.”

BACK STORY

The NLC had, on Tuesday, directed all workers in the nation’s capital, including those in the private sector, to begin an indefinite strike the following day over unresolved labour disputes and policy grievances affecting teachers.

The directive followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to Wike over unmet demands.

In a communique issued at the end of an emergency state executive council meeting of the NLC on Wednesday, Knabayi Adalo, the union’s chairman in the FCT, identified one of the demands as the abolition of the vacancy precondition for teachers’ promotions, which he described as the primary cause of career stagnation and demoralisation.

He said the union was also demanding the immediate withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters issued to directors in agencies under the education secretariat who were beneficiaries of the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022.

However, the FCT chapter of TUC and ASUSS rejected the strike, directing teachers and education officers to report to work and continue their normal duties.

In a statement on Friday by Sunday Joseph, its secretary, the FCT TUC directed its members to disregard the NLC directive, saying it was not consulted before the decision was announced.

Similarly, ASUSS described the strike as premature, warning that the action could disrupt academic activities and negatively affect students.

Bankole Wellington, the Nigerian music executive better known as Banky W, has revealed how his defeat in the 2023 general election led him to seek God’s direction.

The 45-year-old singer shared his experience in a recent Instagram post marking his first anniversary with Union Church, where he serves as an associate pastor.

Banky W said the election loss left him heartbroken but also gave him room to reflect on his future and reconsider his path.

“The election didn’t go the way I hoped. But God’s plans for my life are bigger than the plans I had for myself,” he said.

“And the beautiful thing is, He’s still writing.”

The singer said he struggled to decide what came next, unsure whether to focus on politics, entertainment, business or ministry.

He said over time, he came to realise he did not have to choose one path over the others.

“It wasn’t either/or. It was all of the above,” he said.

“Turns out, God wasn’t trying to put me in a box. He was expanding my assignment.”

The singer disclosed that he now serves as an associate pastor at Union Church and also a teacher and leader at Union College.

He admitted that shuttling between Lagos and the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia area to fulfil his responsibilities can be demanding, but described the experience as worthwhile.

APC Asks INEC to Bar Parties Over Membership Register Breach

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to bar political parties that fail to comply with Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026 from fielding candidates in the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated October 9, signed by National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, and released to journalists on Friday, the APC called on INEC to enforce the Supreme Court’s September 24 judgment in the case of INEC v Zenith Labour Party.

The party asked the commission to verify whether political parties submitted their digital membership registers at least 21 days before their primaries, congresses and conventions, and to apply the legal consequences of any non-compliance.

According to the letter, the Supreme Court judgment affirmed the validity of Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026.

It set aside a Court of Appeal ruling that had nullified Sections 77(5) to (7) and Section 84(2), along with related provisions in INEC’s revised timetable for the 2027 elections.

Section 77(4) requires each political party to make its membership register available to INEC not later than 21 days before the date fixed for primaries, congresses or conventions.

Section 77(5) states that only members whose names appear in the register are eligible to vote or be voted for in those exercises.Section 77(6) prohibits parties from using any register other than the one submitted to the commission.

The Supreme Court held that the practical effect of Section 77(7) is that a party which fails to submit its digital membership register within the prescribed period may be barred from fielding candidates in the general election.

The APC said the apex court affirmed that compliance with these requirements is mandatory and aimed at promoting internal democracy and transparent party elections. It stressed that parties must submit their registers on time and restrict participation to listed members.

The letter noted that the Supreme Court relied on Section 228(a) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the National Assembly to make laws ensuring internal democracy within political parties, including rules for primaries, congresses and conventions.

The APC argued that while parties have the authority to nominate candidates, they must follow legally prescribed procedures.

It added that INEC had given parties sufficient time to submit their registers and was constitutionally bound to enforce the judgment as a party to the case, citing Section 287(1) of the Constitution.

“You know that there are recruitments in the Armed Forces and the police, but unfortunately our youths are not keen on working in the Armed Forces. The media should encourage our young people to please apply for these positions,” he said.

The senator explained that interactions with some young people revealed fear of being posted to areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency as a major reason for their reluctance.

“During interactions, I found out that our youths are afraid of joining the military because they are afraid of being posted to the Boko Haram areas.

“But the calamity of such decision is that in a few years time, we won’t have officers of Igbo extraction in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and when that happens, we will be shouting of marginalisation.

“This is the time to reach out to our young people and encourage them to take advantage of those openings in the security forces so that we will be fully represented.”

The Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Global Legal Consortium has described the trial of the jailed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, leader as prosecution from the bench.

The consortium, a group of lawyers fighting for Kanu’s freedom, made the assertion in a statement released on Thursday by a lawyer, Onyedikachi Ifedi.

Ifedi said the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, defied mandatory supreme court commands in arriving at the conviction of the agitator.

“When a trial judge actively selects which statutory commands to obey and which to ignore in order to preserve a politically charged prosecution, that is not an innocent oversight — that is prosecution from the bench,” the lawyer stated.

The lawyer added that provisions of the Evidence Act were wilfully overlooked in the proceedings leading to Kanu’s conviction.

He said, “Justice James Omotosho cannot claim ignorance, oversight, or unfamiliarity with the Evidence Act. His own judgment proves he knew the law, understood its mandatory duty, and knew precisely how to deploy it as a legal weapon.”

Ifedi cited page 34 of the judgment delivered on November 20, 2025, in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015 (Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu), where Justice Omotosho stated: “This Court is bound to take judicial notice of the laws of the land as well as gazetted orders and rulings of courts of coordinate jurisdiction by virtue of Section 122 of the Evidence Act, 2011. Consequently, this Court takes judicial notice of the Order of this Court delivered by Kafarati, J. (as he then was) in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/878/2017 between Attorney General of the Federation v. Indigenous People of Biafra, delivered on 20th September 2017, proscribing the Defendant’s organization as a terrorist group.”

According to him, “The trial judge admitted in black and white that the statutory command was mandatory. He weaponised Section 122 to import Justice Kafarati’s ex parte proscription order into the trial to convict the defendant. Yet, when the exact same Section 122 was invoked by the defense to challenge the legal foundation of the charge sheet itself, the court suddenly went blind and mute.”

Ifedi further alleged that the trial judge defied a binding Supreme Court pronouncement that Nigerian courts are under an inescapable duty to take judicial notice of primary statutory enactments, including repealed laws.

“Under the doctrine of stare decisis, Justice Omotosho had zero legal room to maneuver. He was bound by the statute. He was bound by Supreme Court precedent. He had already acknowledged the rule on page 34 of his judgment. Ignoring this binding obligation when it favored the defendant was an act of open judicial defiance,” Ifedi declared.

The lawyer in the same vein alleged that the trial judge took advantage of Kanu “an unrepresented defendant”, during the proceedings of November 4 and 5, 2025.

According to him, Kanu while standing in the dock without counsel, pleaded with the judge to take judicial notice of the repeal of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013 and the non-existence of Criminal Code Act C-45.

However, Ifedi stated that instead of stopping the trial to perform the mandatory statutory duty, “which would have instantly exposed that the charge sheet was built on dead laws, Justice Omotosho brushed the application aside, forced the trial forward, and enticed the defendant to proceed under a false premise”.

According to Ifedi, “To refuse to take judicial notice when invoked by an unrepresented defendant, only to force him to trial on repealed laws, constitutes a total failure of fair hearing and a judicial ambush.”

Alleging double standards in the way the trial was conducted, the Mazi Nnamdi Global Legal Consortium decried what it described as selective obedience to the Evidence Act.

Ifedi stated, “The certified trial record exposes an irreconcilable double standard in how Section 122 was deployed. When Section 122 assisted the State, it was an absolute mandatory command (“This court is bound”). When Section 122 demonstrated that the charges were legally dead, it was ignored and replaced with a post-hoc assumption. That is not neutral adjudication. That is railroading under the color of judicial authority.”

Petrol discount: Tinubu walking back to opaque subsidy regime – Atiku’s aide

Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of returning to an opaque petrol subsidy regime through its 30-day petrol discount initiative.

Ibe argued that the initiative would not address Nigeria’s nationwide petrol affordability crisis because it was limited in duration and restricted to a small section of the country’s filling stations.

“You cannot solve a nationwide affordability crisis with a narrowly targeted discount. Nigerians need cheaper petrol everywhere, not cheaper petrol somewhere, and certainly not for just 30 days,” Ibe wrote.

He added, “From every indication, Tinubu is walking back to the opaque subsidy regime that he claimed was gone for good.”

The Atiku aide accused the Tinubu administration of prioritising arguments over whether the intervention should be described as a subsidy or a margin discount rather than addressing the hardship caused by high petrol prices.

Ibe, however, welcomed any genuine reduction in petrol prices, insisting that relief must be fair, accessible and sustainable.

To support his argument, he cited Nigeria’s estimated 22,681 filling stations, noting that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) operated more than 900 outlets, representing roughly four per cent of the nationwide retail network.

He also cited an estimated 17 per cent retail market share for NNPC in 2024, arguing that the company’s network was insufficient to deliver meaningful relief to Nigerians nationwide.

Ibe further referenced an NNPC report for July 2026, which he said showed petrol availability across its retail network at 52 per cent.

He questioned how the government intended to ensure nationwide access to the discount, particularly for Nigerians living in communities without NNPC filling stations.

According to him, residents in such areas could be forced to travel long distances to access the discount, incurring additional expenses despite the economic hardship they were facing.

The media aide warned that the selective arrangement could create inequalities similar to those associated with the electricity Band A, B and C classification, where consumers experience different levels of service and costs depending on their locations.

He maintained that the government’s intervention amounted to an acknowledgement that market forces alone could not shield Nigerians from unbearable petrol prices.

Ibe also advocated Atiku’s proposed production-based subsidy, arguing that reducing costs at the point of production would allow the benefits to spread through the wider distribution network.

South African judge Navi Pillay wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to South Africa’s Navi Pillay, the judge who headed the Rwanda genocide tribunal and who last year presided over a UN commission which accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Pillay, currently a judge on the International Court of Justice in a case where Myanmar also stands accused of genocide, has been “instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted,” said Jorgen Watne Frydnes, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.

“In historic international court cases, she has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence,” the committee said.

Pillay’s “independence, her expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time.”

She reacted to the news by making a quip about US President Donald Trump’s well-documented desire to win the prize himself.

“If you clap a little bit more I may share this prize with Trump,” the 85-year-old said during a standing ovation captured by Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard in Nuremberg and posted on the social network X.

Pillay headed the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI), which does not speak on behalf of the world body, and which last year found that genocide was occurring in Gaza.

Pillay told AFP at the time that her team had shared “thousands of pieces of information” with prosecutors at the International Criminal Court.

Israel categorically rejected the report’s findings, slamming it as “distorted and false”.

– ‘Courage to speak the truth’ –

The Nobel committee said that while its prize honoured Pillay’s career of fighting genocide, it was not taking a stand on whether Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute a genocide.

“We are not the court,” Frydnes told AFP.

“It’s her report, the Commission’s report… It will be decided by the International Court of Justice,” he said.

Speaking on Friday after her standing ovation, Pillay noted that many had paid tribute to her courage in that report.

“You can imagine how surprised I was. Why would you need courage to speak the truth?”

The UN said her prize was a “testament to the need and to the value of human rights in this world more than ever”.

The International Criminal Court meanwhile said her award was of “particular significance” given current attacks on international law.

The Nobel committee echoed that sentiment in its statement, noting that “at a time of existential challenges — including more wars and conflicts than the world has seen in a long time — international law is no longer just a supplement to peace and security.”

“It is an absolute necessity.”

– ‘Needs to stop’ –

The prize for Pillay is sure to anger Trump, whose administration has repeatedly attacked international justice institutions.

“This is a clear message to those who are putting pressure on these institutions, to those who are sanctioning the judges and are attacking the institutions. That needs to stop,” Frydnes told AFP after the announcement.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has made no secret of his desire to win the prize, insisting that he was the most deserving candidate and claiming to have ended up to eight wars.

“They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me .. and I think it would be a great discredit to them,” Trump had said on Wednesday.

But his war against Iran, his territorial expansion ambitions as in Greenland, his hard line on migrants, and his attacks on multilateralism and the media have, according to experts in Oslo, disqualified him for the prize.

Last year, the prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, a choice generally considered palatable to Trump.

Machado even gave him her Nobel gold medal, judging he deserved it after the capture of President Nicolas Maduro — though she failed to obtain his political backing in exchange.

The Nobel committee has said it is not swayed by external pressures.

“Of course we have to discuss it, but it’s not like that influences the discussions in the room and decisions that come out,” the secretary of the committee, Kristian Berg Harpviken, told AFP ahead of the prize announcement.

The prize comes with a gold medal, a diploma and a prize sum of $1.2 million.

The Oyo State Government has rejected claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Governor Seyi Makinde and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, sponsored attacks on APC figures, insisting the incidents stemmed from internal disagreements within the APC.

The response followed allegations by the Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO).

Alli, the APC governorship candidate, accused hoodlums of attacking his wife, Alhaja Tawakalitu Alli, during a medical outreach at Ibikunle House, Ayeye, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

The campaign also alleged that APC Oyo South senatorial candidate Aderemi Oseni and Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency candidate Folake Olunloyo-Oshinowo were attacked at separate campaign events the same day.

SSACO described the incidents as unwarranted and barbaric. It called on Makinde, as the state’s chief security officer and APM promoter, and Adekanmbi to restrain their supporters, while urging security agencies to investigate and prosecute those responsible.

In a statement signed by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the government dismissed the allegations as false and irresponsible.

It accused the APC of attempting to shift blame for its internal crisis onto the state government and Adekanmbi.

“Eyewitness accounts are clear: the individuals who attacked Alhaja Alli, Engr. Remi Oseni, and Hon. Funke Olunloyo-Osinowo were APC members caught in the middle of their party’s internal disagreements. These were cases of intra-party crisis, not government-sponsored incidents,” the statement said.

The government maintained that Oyo has seen a sustained decline in political thuggery since Makinde assumed office, citing measures such as the strengthening of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), expanded joint security patrols, investment in surveillance equipment and improved collaboration with federal agencies.

It stressed that a popular government has no incentive to disrupt opposition campaigns and that Makinde remains focused on governance rather than political confrontation.

Oladejo said a responsible opposition should welcome credible efforts to ease citizens’ burdens while offering constructive suggestions for improvement.

“At a time when Nigerians are grappling with the impact of rising petrol prices on transportation, food prices, household budgets and business operations, one would ordinarily expect a responsible opposition to welcome any credible intervention aimed at easing the burden on citizens, while offering constructive suggestions for improvement,” he said.

“Instead, we are confronted with the familiar spectacle of political opportunism masquerading as economic criticism.”

Addressing claims that the discount represents a return of fuel subsidy through the back door, the Lagos APC urged critics to examine the policy’s structure and financing rather than rely on political labels.

It said allegations without evidence of fiscal irresponsibility or legal irregularities do not constitute serious economic analysis.The party acknowledged that a 30-day discount alone cannot solve Nigeria’s cost-of-living challenges.

It called on the Federal Government to sustain efforts to stabilise prices, expand domestic refining, improve fuel distribution, reduce logistics costs, support public transportation and strengthen household purchasing power.

Oladejo urged transparency in implementing the discount, verification that benefits reach intended beneficiaries, and clear communication of measures to follow after the initiative ends.

He challenged the opposition to present workable alternatives if they consider the intervention inadequate.

“If the opposition believes the 30-day arrangement is inadequate, let it tell Nigerians precisely what it would do differently, how it would finance its proposal and how quickly its alternative would produce tangible benefits.

“Nigerians deserve more than slogans, cynical commentary and the perpetual conversion of economic hardship into campaign material,” he added.

The Lagos APC said concerns about sustainability after the 30-day period are legitimate but should not be used to dismiss the immediate relief the measure could provide.

Police Warn Churches Over Testimonies After Foiled Kidnap Plot

The police have cautioned worshippers against publicly sharing personal achievements during church testimonies, following the foiling of a kidnap plot against a female cleric in Abuja.

The warning came after the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force arrested four church members over an alleged plot to kidnap Prophetess Elizabeth.

Police said she was targeted after sharing a testimony about her personal achievements and business success.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the IRT, Adamu Muazu, issued the advice on Thursday while parading the suspects. He said the planned attack was to take place after an evening service.

Muazu urged church leaders, especially those operating in isolated or outskirt locations, to strengthen security arrangements and prioritise the safety of members attending evening services.

He also cautioned worshippers not to assume that everyone in a congregation has good intentions.

“You can’t go to a church located on outskirts and you go to evening prayers and closing in the evening, coming down to your home after making testimony of what you have achieved in life, you know?” he said.

He added: “It doesn’t conform with common sense and rationality in the midst of a gathering of people watching you, thinking that they are all men of God. No, everybody has his own motive of going to the church.”

Muazu advised church leaders to assess security risks around their premises and guide members on necessary precautions, particularly when services end late at night.

He stressed the need for proper observation of routes in and out of churches holding evening programmes.

The officer expressed concern that some of the suspects were closely connected to the intended victim and the church leadership.

“Surprisingly, this happened to be her driver, who worked with her. And the second suspect is a bodyguard to the head church pastor. They are all members of the same church,” he said.

According to investigators, one suspect, David Obaje, had worked as Elizabeth’s driver for about three months and been a church member for roughly four years.

Another, David Dennis, had belonged to the church for about six years and served as a bodyguard to the senior pastor.Police said the suspects allegedly used a WhatsApp group to coordinate the plan and intended to block or deliberately hit her vehicle after an evening service on October 1, creating the appearance of an accident before overpowering and abducting her.

A vehicle, a locally fabricated firearm and a security uniform allegedly linked to the plot were recovered.

The police warning highlighted concerns that information shared during religious gatherings could be exploited by people with criminal intentions, particularly when worshippers travel home after evening services.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu to suspend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme until the country’s insecurity is brought under control.

In a statement issued on Friday by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group reacted to the recent abduction of prospective NYSC members who were later released after spending about a week in the custody of kidnappers in Imo State.

MURIC also demanded the immediate discharge of the 20 freed corps members and the payment of their full allowances for the entire 2026/2027 service year as compensation for their ordeal.

It further urged the government to issue them their NYSC discharge certificates without delay.

Akintola said the incident had raised fresh concerns about the safety of young Nigerians participating in the national service scheme.

While expressing gratitude for the safe return of the victims and congratulating their parents, the organisation stressed the need to address the psychological trauma suffered by the corps members and others who have faced similar experiences.

“We cannot but conclude that the scheme’s greatest challenge is insecurity. We are of the opinion that our young ones do not deserve this punishment. Rather, the Federal Government has the responsibility, in loco parentis, to ensure their protection,” Akintola stated.

“However, in view of the apparent inability to do this, at least presently, we demand the suspension of the NYSC scheme until the Federal Government is able to take full control of the security situation in the country.”

MURIC maintained that the safety and welfare of corps members must be prioritised, arguing that the government should not expose young Nigerians to avoidable danger while they fulfil their national service obligations.

NNPC Extends N66 Petrol Discount to October 31, Debunks Subsidy Return

NNPC clarified that the ₦66 sales discount is a temporary customer relief initiative. “This discount is a customer relief initiative and does not represent the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy,” the company stated.

It emphasised that the measure applies only to NNPC Retail outlets and does not create a uniform national pump price or alter the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.

At the grassroots level, the structure will include state, local government, ward and polling-unit coordinators, backed by volunteers, canvassers, polling agents and supporters.

The AAC said its mobilisation efforts have been significantly boosted by the SOWORENOW application, which it called an important digital platform for organising supporters.

“The Presidential Campaign Council is not a replacement for this digital mobilisation infrastructure; rather, it is designed to upscale, deepen and expand it,” the statement noted.

The council will combine technology with physical organisation, political coordination and community-level mobilisation to extend the campaign’s reach.

The party plans to take its message beyond major cities and state capitals into rural communities and polling units.“The 2027 election is not merely about changing the occupant of Aso Rock; it is about changing the political direction of Nigeria,” the statement said.

It argued that the existing political order has failed Nigerians and that the campaign would focus on reaching voters directly.“As the old political order continues to fail Nigerians, the AAC is taking its message directly to the people, from the cities to the rural communities, from state capitals to the polling units,” it added.

The party framed the inauguration as the start of intensified nationwide mobilisation and called on Nigerians seeking a different political direction to join the effort.

“We call on Nigerians who believe that Nigeria can and must be different to join us. The task of taking back our country cannot be left to politicians alone; it requires the active participation of the People.”

An Ado-Ekiti mini-truck driver, Adeleye Adeniyi, popularly known as “Online Loan Man for BAO”, has revealed that he took a N3.5 million loan to back the re-election campaigns of President Bola Tinubu, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Ekiti State House of Assembly member Steve Fatoba.

In a video interview circulating on Friday, Adeniyi displayed a Wema Bank cardboard cheque showing the breakdown: N2 million for Tinubu, N1 million for Bamidele and N500,000 for Fatoba.

He said he decided to borrow the money because of what he described as the politicians’ strong performance in office and was ready to campaign actively for them ahead of the next elections.

“I am supporting Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his second-term ambition. I have borrowed money. I want to use this money to support him because he’s doing a very great job,” Adeniyi stated.

He added that he would go out to campaign and use the song “On your mandate, we shall stand” in support of the President. He also urged Nigerians to vote for Tinubu, Bamidele and Fatoba, expressing confidence that a second term would bring even greater benefits.

Adeniyi further praised Bamidele and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji for their work in healthcare, education, electricity and rural infrastructure. He described Bamidele as a good leader whose projects had encouraged him.This is not the first time the driver has taken a loan for political support.

In February 2026, he reportedly borrowed money through the digital lending platform OPay to brand a vehicle in favour of Governor Oyebanji’s second-term bid. Adeniyi operates around the BAO Timber Market along Ilawe Road in Ado-Ekiti and has previously cited the governor’s and Tinubu’s policies on education, healthcare and citizens’ welfare as reasons for his support.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has explained the difference between a fuel margin discount and a government subsidy.

This comes amid controversy over the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount.

Onanuga made the clarification in a statement posted on his X handle on Friday, explaining the difference between the two policies.

The government announced 30-day fuel discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, outlets.

In the statement titled “Margin Discount and a Subsidy Are Not the Same,” the presidential aide explained that a margin discount occurs when a fuel retailer reduces or temporarily waives its profit margin to pass the savings on to consumers.

He said, “The ADC and NDC should carefully re-read this ministerial brief: Margin Discount and a Subsidy Are Not the Same.

“Every marketer adds a margin to the price it pays for the fuel it sells. A margin discount means the retailer chooses to take a smaller margin, or no margin at all, for a period, and passes the savings on to the customer. The cost of the discount is borne by the retailer alone.

“A subsidy is different. It is when the government pays part of the price the consumer would otherwise pay.

“That money comes from public revenue funds that would otherwise go to salaries, schools, hospitals and infrastructure. That is the regime this administration ended in 2023, and it is not coming back.”

Gov Idris’ aide threatens to bar Malami from Kebbi over alleged billboard vandalism

An aide to Kebbi State governor, Nasir Idris on cemetery affairs, ATM Jega, has threatened to prevent former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami from entering the state over the alleged destruction of political billboards.

Jega issued the threat while reacting to allegations that some individuals were removing billboards in different parts of Kebbi State.

He urged Malami, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, governorship candidate in Kebbi, to caution those he described as his supporters against the alleged vandalism.

“We will prevent Abubakar Malami from entering Kebbi State if he does not stop his boys from tearing down our billboards,” Jega was quoted as saying.

Jega warned that he would take action if the alleged destruction continued.

The development comes as political activities gather momentum in Kebbi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni has accused the Federal Government of hypocrisy over its decision to introduce a 30-day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, filling stations.

Oseni argued that the discount amounted to a return of fuel subsidy despite the position of the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, that the measure was not a subsidy.

The broadcaster made the remarks on Friday during The Morning Show, an Arise Television programme.

He questioned why the government, which had consistently opposed the return of fuel subsidy, introduced the petrol discount for only 30 days, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general election gathered momentum.

Oseni also commended former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for bringing the need to cushion the effects of rising petrol prices to the forefront of public debate.

He recalled that Atiku, in a speech delivered on September 18, argued that President Bola Tinubu could rename the intervention and take credit for it, provided it reduced the burden on Nigerians.

According to Oseni, the government had failed to introduce sufficient relief measures for Nigerians despite the rise in global crude oil prices since March 8.

He said the decision to offer a petrol discount demonstrated that the government could intervene to ease the burden on citizens, contrary to its earlier position that fuel subsidy should not return.

Oseni said: “Subsidy is back. Welcome back, subsidy. The fact that the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, says it’s not a subsidy does not mean it’s not a subsidy.

“Read my lips. It is a subsidy, and it is back. Who do we have to thank? Atiku Abubakar. I never knew there would be a day I would thank you, Atiku Abubakar.

“If not for you, this government wouldn’t have thought of any reprieve for anybody. If not for you, who brought the subsidy issue to the front burner, the government wouldn’t have thought of anything to cushion the effects of rising petrol prices, which have exceeded $100 per barrel since March 8.

“But today, Atiku Abubakar, take your flowers. On September 18, Atiku gave a speech, and I will quote that speech. He said, ‘President Bola Tinubu can even rename it and take the glory, as long as the pain is less on the people.’

“So, it is possible. You see, hypocrisy is so much in this country. Government officials spent all these months defending their position and saying, ‘No, subsidy should not come back. It is an aberration.

“If we do this, if we do that, it’s an aberration.’ But when it’s one month to the election, they quickly bring it back for 30 days.

“But, as people have asked, after 30 days, when they have switched people off and held the election, will we see the outcome and then they will take it back?

“This is because a government that didn’t care for you since March 8, when petrol prices reached $100 per barrel, has now introduced a discount in the middle of October for just one month.

“So, we have seen that it was possible. This was the same President Tinubu who told us, ‘Hypocrisy is so much in this country.’ He said the state governors should use CNG to reduce transportation costs. That’s why they were pushing CNG. So, now you’ve gone back and given people a discount.

“For those who are saying it’s a discount, not a subsidy, okay, who will bear the cost of the lost profit? You people fail to understand, in basic economics, that your profit is also used to invest in a business. So, when you make the argument that it’s a discount, not a subsidy…”

Former presidential aide and Arise Television’s Morning Showanchor, Reuben Abati, has criticised the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount, saying the administration acted too late to provide relief to Nigerians.

Abati said the temporary nature of the intervention raised questions about what would happen after the 30-day period.

He also questioned the government’s continued borrowing despite its decision to remove the petrol subsidy, which was partly justified as a measure to increase revenue and curb corruption.

The Federal Government announced a 30-day petrol discount as part of efforts to provide relief to Nigerians amid concerns over fuel prices and the rising cost of living.

Speaking on Friday, Abati said the government needed to explain how the proposed discount would be funded and who would bear the cost.

He added that the government’s continued borrowing had raised concerns about the expected financial benefits of subsidy removal.

The broadcaster called on the government to publish details of its price modulation plan, including the funding arrangements and the parties responsible for bearing the cost of the intervention.

He maintained that the proposal had left several questions unanswered, arguing that the administration could have introduced the intervention earlier.

Abati said: “The other issue is that it is temporary, okay, for 30 days. After 30 days, what happens?

“And then, you know, the other contradiction is that when the subsidy was removed, the government said part of the reason was to save revenue and curb corruption.

“But the same administration has been borrowing on a large scale since then, and people have been asking: If you remove the subsidy to generate more revenue, how are we now in this kind of situation?

“There is still a lot to be said, but the government still needs to take a step further and publish the details of the price modulation plan, including who is going to pay and who is going to bear the cost of all this.

“There are more questions than answers in what has been proposed. But in terms of intention, I’ve said that the government woke up too late to say that it wants to help the people.

“We could have done this much earlier, and other people would not see it as an opportunity to attack the administration.”
