The Making of an Icon invites visitors to experience one of New York City’s most compelling free exhibitions this summer. Presented at Genesis House in the heart of the Meatpacking District, the immersive installation offers a fresh perspective on one of the world’s most recognizable cultural figures, shifting the conversation away from celebrity mythology and toward the intelligence, ambition and determination that defined Marilyn Monroe’s life and legacy. Through immersive environments and thoughtfully curated storytelling, the exhibition reveals the woman behind the icon while encouraging visitors to reflect on their own journeys of reinvention and self-authorship.

Manifesting Marilyn unfolds across six immersive rooms, each revealing a different chapter of Marilyn’s transformation from Norma Jeane into one of history’s most enduring cultural icons. Rather than presenting a traditional biographical exhibition, the experience examines the choices, discipline and resilience that shaped her extraordinary career while offering visitors a more intimate understanding of the person behind the public image.

The experience begins in The Rewrite, where familiar headlines surrounding Marilyn’s life are reimagined to challenge decades of public perception. Instead of allowing sensationalism to define her story, the gallery encourages visitors to reconsider Marilyn as the author of her own narrative rather than simply its subject.

From there, guests enter Mind of the Strategist, an intimate recreation of Marilyn’s office that presents her as a savvy businesswoman and creative decision-maker. Original documents, personal materials and archival artifacts illustrate the intentional decisions that helped her navigate Hollywood on her own terms, highlighting a side of Marilyn that is often overshadowed by her fame.

One of the exhibition’s most personal spaces is The Library, featuring books from Marilyn’s own collection. The carefully curated selection reveals her lifelong curiosity and interest in literature, philosophy and psychology, providing a glimpse into the intellectual pursuits that shaped her worldview. Nearby, The Vanity reframes glamour as an intentional craft, using wardrobe pieces and personal objects to demonstrate how Marilyn thoughtfully constructed one of the most recognizable public identities in history.

The journey continues through The Transformation, an immersive cinematic installation combining archival imagery with Marilyn’s own voice to trace her evolution from Norma Jeane to global icon. The exhibition concludes in New Beginnings, a reflective space inviting visitors to consider the stories they are writing for themselves and the legacies they hope to create.

Throughout the galleries, visitors will encounter rare archival objects, personal books, photographs, audio recordings and artifacts that offer a richer understanding of Marilyn’s life beyond the silver screen. The exhibition presents her not simply as a Hollywood legend, but as a visionary who deliberately shaped her own future despite extraordinary obstacles.

The experience extends beyond the exhibition itself. Upstairs, guests can explore Genesis House Restaurant, where a limited-time menu inspired by the installation offers
an opportunity to continue the experience through food and hospitality. Together, the exhibition, restaurant and architectural setting create a destination that blends culture, design and contemporary Korean hospitality into a single afternoon experience.

Every street has a story. Walking the City, I seem drawn to certain streets. Each street has a past. Memories. A history. Its own history commingling with my history to the street. I return to favorite streets where I somehow feel at home. A street can anchor you, place you, remind you, make you feel. It can speak to you.

Every street has a soul. There is a mood to a street. The sky, the weather interacting with a street, an emotional dance, an unveiling. Sometimes dramatic, but often quiet and subtle, the streets I paint demand I notice them. I feel this way about New York City more than any other place. The curve of that street, the remembered buildings still standing to mark my own history to them.

Within my paintings there is often a glimpse of my husband Joe, as he has wandered most of these streets with me over the years. These streets I paint in oil will never look quite the same way again. I am recording a history, a passing moment in time with every street. A very personal journey with NYC. My story is here.

Artificial neon lights become a player as the anonymity of figures and wavering shapes weave in and out between the shadows of After Hours.

The mysterious movement of the night and murkiness of her weather. The coziness of the indoors calling. Beckoning bars and restaurants. Fearsome Magical Gotham!

Obsession. Every morning I find myself drawn to my window on the 25th floor by a magical light show overlooking three bridges – Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg. And on out to the balcony with my camera several times, trying to capture “the moment” of the rapidly changing moments of colors and clouds.
How could the same view painted over and over hold my interest? How could I paint the masterpiece in the sky with mere oils??

The iconic bridges of New York, sometime mere silhouettes, appear like a backdrop stage set trying to command attention with the impossibly wondrous skies.

A tiny police boat keeps watch. Powerful freighters pass, toys against the heavens. Elysium. Empyrean. Eden. Utopia. Fervor. Bliss. Inferno. And a rather belated nod to the New Kid on the Block, 1 Manhattan Square, as it claims its place amongst the giants.

So many more paintings still unpainted. My tribute to NYC and the skies above her!

A magical architectural cruise aboard the decks of the Manhattan, an elegant 1920’s-style yacht, inspired Ellen Bradshaw’s newest series of oil paintings “Circling Manhattan.” Cruising through the Hudson, East and Harlem Rivers and circumnavigating the island of Manhattan, passing under all 18 bridges, afforded a breathtaking perspective of the ever-changing NYC skyline and iconic sites and structures.

“I simply had to go twice – once on an idyllic early summer day in June with blue skies, sunshine and fairy-tale clouds …. on to a gloomy, moody, whipped-by-wind-and-rain October day!” Clouds and water provide a powerful backdrop for the skyline of NYC. Buildings and structures come to life in a theatrical drama of paint and brush. This intense interplay between clouds, weather, water, bridge and skyline brings a human emotional quality to the paintings through Bradshaw’s lively brushwork and moody palette.

With her latest show, Ellen Bradshaw captures New York City in oils from her rooftops, balconies, and windows high above. Beginning with the stunning panorama from her own balcony on the 25th floor, Bradshaw paints lower Manhattan and her bridges through sunrise, fog, storm, and snow with lively brushwork and colors to capture the mood of weather and season. From the same balcony, Ellen paints views of the new Gehry Twisted Building, the Woolworth Building, Municipal Building, and courtyard views!

Bradshaw’s studio roof in the West Village affords views reminiscent of John Sloan’s rooftop paintings, a strong influence on Bradshaw’s work.

“Wherever I found myself this past year, inspiration struck…accidentally!!!”

Through a window view at HSS, (where her husband Joe underwent knee replacement surgery) Ellen paints Roosevelt Island on a frigid winter’s day, ice floes passing by on the East River….a waiting room in a doctor’s office reveals an unexpected view of the Freedom Tower looking up Ann St….a lawyer’s office high above Herald Square and Macy’s becomes a lively painting of Summer in the City….and Bradshaw climbs on top of forbidden benches at a rooftop bar to capture the views of the Empire State Building, water towers, and streets below on a moody gray blue day.

Ode to the Brooklyn Bridge Art Exhibit

In celebration of 130 years, Ellen Bradshaw paints a personal song to the Brooklyn Bridge with oils and brush.
The show runs from April 16 – May 11, 2013 at Pleiades Gallery, 530 West 25th St, 4th floor, NY, NY 10001
Receptions are Thursday April 18th from 5-8 PM and Saturday, April 20th from 3-6 PM.

Whether a sweeping sunrise from the artist’s balcony 25 flights up, or the awe inspiring walk across the span from day to night, Bradshaw’s brush work and color explore the changing faces of the bridge.

The FREE Good Morning America Summer Concert Series is open to the public and available through their ticketing system as space allows. RSVPs in Central Park are usually required.

In prior years, viewers interested in joining “GMA” in Central Park are encouraged to arrive at Summerstage Rumsey Playfield via the 72nd Street entrance on Fifth Avenue at 6 a.m., when the park opens to the public. All concerts are free and open to the public and will take place live during “Good Morning America,” Fridays from 7 to 9 a.m. ET.

Radio City Music Hall Seating Chart

Radio City Music Hall seating areas include Orchestra + 3 mezzanines. The Orchestra section goes from row AA to ZZ and then A to W, which is a total of 50 rows. AA to ZZ is front Orchestra and A to W are rear Orchestra.

The first 10 Orchestra rows or so are known for making the audience crank their neck up high to see the stage (kind of like the front row at a movie theater). The best seats in the house are generally mid-Orchestra, around MM to ZZ and the 400 section is dead center with the 500 section fanning out left and the 300 section fanning out right. 

Children under 2 are free but must sit on the lap of their parent or guardian.

Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Every July 4th in NYC, thousands of fans head to the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues in Coney Island to watch the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest, also broadcast on ESPN. The ‘Mustard Belt’ is awarded to the man and woman who eat the most hot dogs in 10 minutes. The current Men’s Mustard Belt hold’s the world championship record @ 76 hot dogs and buns and the current Women’s world champion ate 48.5.

Annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks

July 4th

Per Macy’s, “New effects that will enthrall revelers include a mile wide waving flag created by a combination of red, white, and blue palm and strobing shells, sunflower ring with crackling pistil shells, red stop sign shaped effects, and new Ghost pyro that turn from one color to another in an on/off design featuring four different hues.” The fireworks should also be viewable from Gantry Plaza State Park, Transmitter Park, Newton Barge Park and Marsha P. Johnson State Park.

Per Macy’s Press Release: “On July 4th at approximately 9:25 p.m., Macy’s will begin its signature pyrotechnic salute to America, featuring an array of dazzling shells and effects that will captivate spectators live in New York City and on television from sea to shining sea. This year’s revelry will launch 60,000 shells and effects from five barges positioned between E. 26th and E. 40th Streets along the East River with prime viewing from three boroughs in New York City.”

Can I watch the fireworks from Central Park?

Not that I know of. There is no vantage point high enough from which to view the fireworks over the East River.

Can Trump SoHo (Dominick Hotel) see the see 4th of July fireworks?

Possibly, the Dominick (formerly Trump SoHo) hotel offers some rooms with fireworks views. I’m not sure if you can see them from the rooftop pool, so please check with the hotel. See Dominick Reviews above.

Can You See the Macy’s fireworks from Weehawken?

No. Our previous Mayor, DeBlasio, moved the Fireworks back to the East Side of NY, so more New Yorkers can see them, including those in Queens and Brooklyn. I’ve heard “the fireworks are for New York, not Jersey.” However, I hear New Jersey does have their own fireworks display which may be an option.

• Riverview Restaurant & Lounge – Long Island City
  Riverview, which has one the best Manhattan skyline views, especially of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River (probably all of the fireworks), is offering standard open bar and a four-star buffet from 6-9 pm and top-shelf open bar 6-10pm for $170 per guest (plus tax & tip). After the fireworks, at 10 pm, get dancing with a DJ and cash bar. More info: www.riverviewny.com
• Edge is also throwing a Private July 4th Party and say they have views of the the Macy’s, Coney Island and Jersey City fireworks.

Who Does NOT Have a View of the Fireworks?

In researching some other posts online, I was wary of the information NON New Yorkers were providing, such as, “to see NYC fireworks this year, the restaurant or upper floors of the Andaz Wall Street would be a good option.” – thepointsguy

This is completely incorrect as the Andaz Hotel Rooms do NOT have views of the Brooklyn Bridge (BB), and the restaurant is on the ground floor, with about 100 buildings between it and the BB. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the BB, but you will not see the fireworks from the hotel.

Another old (and now incorrect) article – Best Hotels to View New York City Fireworks. I’ve tried to email USA Today to tell them, but their form doesn’t work.

Summer Streets New York City

Usually First 3 Saturdays in August, 7am to 3pm

The first 3 Saturdays every August from 7am to 3pm, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are closed to traffic and opened for people to play, run, walk and bike. You can walk, bike, run and blade directly from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge along Park Avenue. There’s tons of free activities and exhibits along the way, free exercise classes, food vendors and much more. Summer Streets is a true NYC experience!

There is now Summer Streets in all boroughs – July 27 – Queens and Staten Island; August 24 – Brooklyn and The Bronx.

Every year in August, Central Park hosts a week of evening film screenings in the landscape just north of Sheep Meadow and south of the 72nd St. Cross Drive. Attending the Central Park Film Festival is free, the gates open at 6:30pm and movies start at 8pm. Make sure to bring your picnic and blanket!

Upper West Side

Central Park

Central Park offers 843 gorgeous acres to explore and 100s of things to do, which is why we consider it an unofficial neighborhood. Central Park draws 38 million visits a year and is home to the Central Park Film Festival, SummerStage, Shakespeare in the Park, Ice Skating, Central Park Zoo, Bow Bridge, biking, playgrounds, the Carousel and much more.

Times Square & Broadway

Times Square New York and the Theater District are some of New York City's most popular tourist attractions. Of course, Broadway, also known as the Great White Way, is most definitely for locals as well. Spend a bit of time here and make sure to see the lights at night, the Hershey's and M&M Stores, as well as catch a great Broadway Show.

Midtown West, Koreatown, Hell's Kitchen

Midtown West is a huge tourist area with great neighborhoods like NYC's famous Diamond District, Hell's Kitchen and Koreatown. Hell's Kitchen, is the most western section and an "up-and-coming" residential area of New York City with new shops and restaurants opening often. Koreatown, just a block from the Empire State Building, is known for their restaurants and karaoke bars and clubs.

Garment District / Fashion Center

The Garment District, also called the Fashion District or Fashion Center, is home to many of the world's most famous fashion designers and showrooms. The area is an amazing resource for fabrics, beads and trims, however, unless you are trade, don't expect to walk in off the street to designer showrooms. The best way to possibly get access to private showrooms is through a private tour or a NYC Sample Sale.

Chelsea & Hudson Yards

Chelsea NY is known for art galleries, nightlife and gay-friendly culture. It is a lively, vibrant neighborhood with some of New York City's top restaurants, clubs, art and things to do outdoors and along the Hudson River. While Chelsea boundaries are West 14th-34th Streets, from 7th Ave to the Hudson River, the new Hudson Yards occupies it's most North and West streets, West 30th to 34th Streets between 10th and 12th Avenues.

Meatpacking District

The Meatpacking District, also known as the Gansevoort Market, is only a few blocks, so you cannot get lost, but it is packed with upscale restaurants, night clubs and designer shopping. Like many NY neighborhoods, the MP District retains it's historical architecture, as it is lined with cobblestone streets and old warehouses, but, today, these same buildings house very modern shopping and dining. The heart of the Meatpacking District is Little West 12th Street.

Greenwich Village & NoHo

SoHo

SoHo (SOuth of HOuston - pronounced How-ston) is another NYC neighborhood filled with the best shopping and restaurants. Traditionally known as a haven for artists and their lofts, it has become more upscale over the years and a much sought-after place for New Yorkers to live.

Tribeca & The Battery

Tribeca Tribeca (TRI-angle BE-low CA-nal) NYC, is home of the namesake Film Festival, Robert De Niro’s pet project, created to promote commerce downtown after 9/11. He also owns several hotels and restaurants in the area and is spotted quite frequently. Tribeca was also the home of JFK Jr and Caroline Bessette Kennedy before their tragic death in 1999 and is filled with old warehouses, now converted into lofts, beautiful views of the Hudson River and Statue of Liberty along the West Side Highway, excellent restaurants, families, parks and NYC history.

Financial District and Wall Street

The Financial District (FiDi), at the southern tip of NYC, is one of NYC's most bustling business and tourist areas, from Monday to Friday and is near dead on the weekends. Sights include the 9-11 Memorial & Museum, Wall Street, One World Observatory, The American Stock Exchange, the Charging Bull, the Fearless Girl and views of the Statue of Liberty.

Upper East Side NYC

The Upper East Side is an upscale, residential neighborhood and home to Museum Mile, some uber-upscale shopping and Gracie Mansion. The homes on Fifth Avenue, along Central Park, are some of the most exclusive in all of Manhattan. You've likely seen the Upper East Side on Gossip Girl, Sex and the City, The Real Housewives of New York, I Love Lucy, Breakfast at Tiffany's and dozens of other times on your screens.

Midtown East

Midtown East is a huge tourist, commercial and residential area. Around 5th Ave, the neighborhood is home to many tourist attractions, such as St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Top of the Rock and Radio City Music Hall. Bryant Park, the New York Public Library and Grand Central Station are close together just south. Moving towards 3rd Ave and further east, the area is more residential, and generally, the restaurants are better and more affordable, with the UN being the only attraction in that part of the neighborhood.

Union Square, Flatiron, NoMad, Gramercy

Union Square (my hood!), the Flatiron District and NoMad all have a mix of residence and business tenants. Additionally, colleges such as NYU, The New School and FIT dominate the area, making it very fun and lively. It is one of the best dining and nightlife areas in Manhattan, with something for every palate and budget and offers fabulous hotels of all kinds.

East Village

While originally part of the Lower East Side, an immigrant neighborhood, the East Village, has separated itself and become home to some of the City’s best restaurants, shops and nightlife. It is full of character, diversity, fine dining, shops and live music, and includes a subsection named “Alphabet City.” East Village culture ranges from tattoo parlors and “dive bars” to some of New York City’s nicest hip and trendy hotels.

Lower East Side NYC

Traditionally, the Lower East Side was a working class immigrant neighborhood (think “Gangs of New York”). Today it is a wonderfully ethnic and diverse neighborhood and serves as a shopping, dining and nightlife destination for many NYC locals. Even with all its modern upgrades, the LES retains a large amount of its history, especially it’s Jewish, Polish, Irish and Italian cultures. The LES also has one of the best selections of hotels in NYC - tons of boutique hotels with amenities, rooftops, skyline views and seconds from 1000s of cool restaurants and hot spots.

Chinatown NYC

Chinatown NYC is a small, but very densely packed area of shops and restaurants. It is really fun to walk around, enjoy the culture, pick up some souvenirs, and most definitely, eat some delicious and affordable Dim Sum, dumplings, pork buns and other amazing Chinese cuisines.

Little Italy NYC

About The NYC Insider Guide

My Family History

My Grandfather, Uncle and Father were all taxi drivers. Family folklore states my grandfather was the fourth licensed taxi driver in New York City, and bought his medallion for $5 in 1937 (today they sell for $600,000 and up). As a ‘cabbie’ for over 40 years, he put three daughters through college, and his driving stories are just incredible!

About Me

Fortunately, I only have to head to my 20th floor roof deck to see amazing 360 degree views of Manhattan, including the Empire State, Chrysler, Met Life and Con Edison buildings and One World Trade Center. I go up every morning with my coffee, most evenings with a glass of wine, and on a nice day, you may actually catch me doing yoga on my roof – talk about a surreal experience. My roof deck is my own little slice of heaven in the heart of NYC.

What often happens is I live my life, and then it appears on TV or in the Movies.

My real life stories have been (unintentional) premises for Seinfeld, Friends, Sex and the City and so many more. The streets of our city are filmed every day – we serve Jury Duty at the Law & Order courthouse. 

I’ve had the privilege of attending several MLB World Series games, Tennis U.S. Opens, Golf U.S. Opens, Stanley Cup games and NBA Finals (SuperBowl is still on the list). Our venues host more than sports, as we also have countless concerts of the world’s greatest talents.

My high school was filled with some amazing people, many of whom have become Hollywood legends and Broadway Stars. Meeting famous actors, politicians and sports stars, or being invited to exclusive events and seeing history being made are wonderful.

But, it’s the “every day” happenings in NYC that are my favorites – and they are just like yours are at home, only our backdrop is different.

NYC Personal Stories and Favorite Memories

NYC Hidden Secrets are most often found when you least expect them. Some of my personal stories are now my favorite memories and they happened at the most simple and unexpected times and places.

So what does the Seinfeld “Soup Nazi” have to do with my business job? Or how did I meet the cast of Friends during a long day of community service planting trees?

Seinfeld

Early in my career, in 1994, I was an assistant at a large consulting firm. On my second day, my boss sat me down and told me I was about to go through the BIG test. Boy, was I nervous.

She handed me a list of soups and explained how I was going to the Soup Man. She handed me all kinds of small bills and change, told me to order the soups in the exact order of the list, hand the man the bills, request bread and fruit, and then immediately step to the left after I placed my order. “Do not ask for change and do not check the order, just say thank you and walk away. He may or may not give you the bread and fruit.”

This was my BIG test – ordering soup? This is why I went to college?

I’m happy to report I successfully ordered 7 soups, received change, got bread and fruit with every order – and even got a smile from the Soup Man! I had passed my test!

The following year, the Soup Man showed up on Seinfeld as “The Soup Nazi“…how’s that for reality TV?

Sex and the City

I don’t even know where to start with this one – this IS my life (for better or worse). The men, shoes, careers, dating games. Even the simple things, like when they are talking about guys while eating their Tasti-D-Lite. Carrie’s small apartment, the clubs and restaurants they frequent, the secret lists to get in, the Hamptons, dating “twentysomethings,” watching your friends turn into soccer moms, when the girls rent a car and no one knows how or wants to drive it, Samantha realizing she’s dating the same guy – again! Yeah, this one is just a little too close to home…

Friends

There was the time I ran into Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer twice in one day – once walking on the Upper West Side, covered in dirt after a community service project, and then, that night, in the middle of telling my friend that very story at a bar downtown, they walked right into the bar! I’ve done the Wedding Dress sale at Kleinfeld’s with my girlfriends. The outside of their apartment, on Grove and Bedford, was right across the street from a friend of mine (I used to joke he was “ugly, naked guy”). Friends was a great show no matter where you live, but there are certainly parts of it that make it more real to us New Yorkers.

Just Another Day at the Office

I worked in the Empire State Building, on the 71st floor, the last floor below the colored lights. I spent several July 4th holidays watching the fireworks over the East River sitting on a ledge, with my legs dangling out the window!

Talk about a breathtaking view! Working late into the night isn’t so bad when this is what’s outside your window…

Blackout Wednesday/Thanksgiving Eve

In the mid-90s, I was at Bar Chichetti (now closed) with a girlfriend who was dating the manager. I was only there because I had to switch my flight that night – and I was really upset about it. The chef was a friend of Matt Dillion’s and so he and Cameron Diaz (his girlfriend at the time) were there, and then the band, REM, arrived. Well, the manager shut down the restaurant, REM jumped up on the tables and starting playing and Ms. Diaz poured the champagne all night. Talk about right place, right time!

High School Musicals

Hopefully these stories are able to convey that so much of New York City is magical and spontaneous. You just never know what can happen and when – and that often the simple, lesser known places and things are the most interesting!
