I was honored to be asked by Mike Ness to create the cover art for Social Distortion’s new album “Born to Kill.” The album is great with a ferocity, but also has stylistic diversity and great songwriting. It’s awesome that the band still sounds fresh and vital over 45 years into their career! I first heard Social Distortion in 1985, and I was immediately struck by their punk power and rebellious themes delivered with an undeniable melodic appeal. I begged my parents to buy me the first Social Distortion album, “Mommy’s Little Monster.” My parents hated punk, so when they asked me if the music was punk, I lied and said, “No, it’s New Wave.” I listened to the album non-stop, and a lot of the themes- freedom, generation gaps, questioning authority, subcultural community, etc.- really resonated with me. I’ve seen Social Distortion many times over the years, and I’ve watched their evolution firsthand. They grew from a more conventional punk sound to a broader definition of punk that includes nods to early Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash, artists who pushed social boundaries and outlaw themes. I remember hearing the band’s song, “Story of My Life,” on the radio in 1990, pre-grunge, and thinking to myself, “what a coup… what a triumph, that these guys infiltrated rock radio.” In my opinion, Social Distortion shattered a glass ceiling and did what few bands can do: they found broad appeal without abandoning their punk roots or watering down their sound. -Shepard

Interpol is one of my favorite bands, and I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with them many times throughout the years, including on their excellent newest release, “This Mirror Weighs a Ton”. I picked up Interpol’s first album, “Turn on the Bright Lights,” shortly after it was released, based purely on the mysterious, film noir-tinted-with-red image on the cover. The music lived up to the seductive promise of the cover, and I soon decided I’d found my new favorite band. I think that art and music together are even more powerful than either individually, so I was very impressed with Interpol’s ability to craft stylish songs and stylish visuals… I wanted to work with them! My first interaction with them was when I stalked them backstage at Coachella 2003 and offered to create art for them if they ever needed it… to my surprise, they knew my work already and decided to take me up on my offer. My first project with Interpol was in 2004 when I created art for “Antics”, the follow-up to their debut album. Ten years later in 2014, I was approached with another opportunity to not only create a print, but also to paint a mural for their fifth studio album, “El Pintor.” The newest album, “This Mirror Weighs a Ton,” is great musically and I was especially excited to add my own spin to their theme of surveillance represented on the album and with its cover and supplementary visuals. My “This Mirror Weighs a Ton” print amplifies Orwell’s dystopian vision of perpetual surveillance with the disturbing future promise of an almost invisible line between the organic and the mechanical. This mirror is black, and it does indeed weigh a ton. Submit with caution!

RAW POWER Don’t you try, don’t you try to tell me what to do!
The exhibitions, titled “Raw Power,” are up Sept. 17-Oct. 18. The energy of the Iggy and the Stooges anthem “Raw Power” is woven throughout Shepard Fairey’s music-related art as well as his pro-justice-themed works. Music, with its emotional power and democratic culture, has long been a model for Shepard Fairey’s approach to creating and proliferating accessible art laden with social provocation. The exhibition will showcase over 150 works across the two spaces, including paintings, mixed media works on paper, hand-painted multiples, mono engravings, and prints on wood and metal. Limited edition screen prints, many long unavailable, will also be for sale at the galleries.

HENI is delighted to release Troubled Waters, a limited-edition print by Shepard Fairey, Damien Hirst and Invader. The print is based on an original painting by all three artists that was recently on view at the Triple Trouble exhibition at Newport Street Gallery.

Troubled Waters is a Diasec-mounted Giclée print on aluminium composite panel and measures 100 x 145.5 cm. The work is priced at $5,000 (plus applicable taxes) and the edition size is limited to 200 (+ 30 APs). Each print is numbered and hand-signed by all three artists on the label.

In Troubled Waters, Fairey’s tiled papers rigorously blend painterly backgrounds with graphic patterns, and are overlaid with Hirst’s iconic Spot Painting motif of colourful spots organised into a precise grid. These passages are offset by Invader’s pixelated interpretation of Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, with his signature Space Invader figure seemingly surfing the wave.

This poster for the 50th Anniversary tribute to the Ramones’ first album release is based on Danny Fields’ photo for the third Ramones album “Rocket to Russia”, which was released in late 1977. The Ramones had an extraordinary two-year run with their genre-defining self-titled debut, “Leave Home”, and “Rocket to Russia” all coming out in ’76 and ’77! All three albums are incredible and are the only three to feature drummer Tommy Ramone, who also helped with production. I think this photo of the Ramones captures their iconic essence as leather-jacket-and-jeans-clad punk pioneers in grimy mid-70s Lower Manhattan. The first album cover is BXW, “Leave Home” is primarily blue, and “Rocket to Russia” is black and pink, so in this poster I combined those colors to represent the incredible blast of the first three Ramones albums. I first got into the Ramones in 1985, and they quickly became one of my favorite groups. I saw them live in 1988 and 1989, and the shows were non-stop high-intensity action. The Ramones show I saw in the Fall of 1988 at the Living Room in Providence, Rhode Island should have held 500, but in Providence, clubs paid off the cops, and there were probably 1,000 people in the venue. Jane’s Addiction opened up and raised the energy level. When the Ramones came on, the crowd was ready to go nuts. I was near the stage, and the crowd surged forward, compressing everyone so tightly that I thought my ribs would be crushed. I could actually pick my feet off the ground simultaneously without using my hands. The Ramones played non-stop, no breaks between songs for about two hours. The band was super tight. Johnny leaned into the crowd and didn’t even take his leather jacket off for an hour, even though it was sweaty as hell in there. Joey’s hair was in his eyes, but he stayed planted in front of the mic and sounded great. At certain points I felt like I was going to suffocate or be crushed, but I refused to give up my spot right at the front. It may seem weird to say you are having the time of your life fighting for your life, but that’s the only way I can describe that show later in life.

I started my sticker campaign in 1989, and I continue to value the power of a small but mighty source of disruption and expression. When I was younger and had few resources, my strategy was to print lots of smaller stickers that I could afford to produce myself and disseminate in a variety of ways. I was fascinated by experimenting with different backgrounds and color combinations for my most prominent images. I love repetition with variation! Over time, stickers have remained a foundational source for my overall art campaign. The icon face became my most recurrent image in 1996 and has persisted as a source of inspiration for some and irritation for others to this day! This screenprint on paper showcases a mesmerizing melange of 24 different Icon Face color combinations and will be sold as a signed and numbered edition of 250 for $75 each.

Triple Trouble is the hardback catalogue published to accompany the large-scale exhibition at Newport Street Gallery, which opened in October of 2025, featuring individual and collaborative works by Shepard Fairey, Damien Hirst, and Invader. The catalogue presents all works in full-color reproduction, showcasing familiar motifs — Fairey’s Obey iconography, Hirst’s spots and cabinets, Invader’s Space Invader mosaics — reconfigured in provocative and playful ways. This beautifully designed hardback catalogue presents all works featured in the exhibition in full-color reproduction. 

When asked about the genesis of Triple Trouble, Shepard replied:
Why would I want to collaborate on an exhibition with Invader and Damien Hirst? I’ve long respected both artists because they are intelligent, conceptual, and relentless in their singular creative visions. “Obsessive” might be too mild a description to convey their drive, focus, and prodigious output. I can relate to them. I also admire risk-takers and troublemakers who can withstand condescending, impolite jabs from supposedly polite society. Those qualities inspired me to collaborate with them even though our aesthetics have no natural overlap or compatibility. A clash of styles in collaboration is a risk worth taking, and creativity can solve almost all problems. Malcolm McLaren once told me, “A glorious failure is better than a boring success.” So, with that as a guiding principle, what could possibly go wrong? – Shepard

 Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club, in partnership with the Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation, announced the completion of a fully renovated futsal court at Rainbow Recreation Center, highlighted by a striking new mural designed by internationally renowned artist Shepard Fairey. 

The revitalized court represents the intersection of sport, culture, and community—core values shared by all organizations involved in the project. Beyond resurfacing and improving the playing area which previously was underutilized, the court now serves as a vibrant public artwork and community asset.

The centerpiece of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind ground mural designed by Shepard Fairey, marking the first time the celebrated artist created a mural specifically for a sports surface. The artwork was brought to life by a team of local artists led by East Oakland native Kalani Cecaci, further connecting the project to The Town’s rich artistic heritage and creative community.

“It’s very exciting to be able to unveil this new piece in the Oakland community, highlighting resonant themes and values for my first sports-specific ground mural with Oakland Roots and Soul SC along with Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation,” said Artist Shepard Fairey. “We witnessed disparate countries being unified around sport with the captivating World Cup and it’s a perfect time to celebrate global citizenship together in Oakland.”

This “Hendrix Fire Letterpress” is an iteration of a Jimi Hendrix portrait I made but never released outside of inclusion in my “50 Shades of Black” boxset. I’ve been a fan of Jimi Hendrix since late high school. After what I call my “punk rock orthodoxy” phase waned, I was open to looking back to older music that had some of the same attitude and expression as punk. Hendrix stood out to me as being soulful and cool, but also intense and feral. The debut Hendrix album, Are You Experienced, is a masterpiece all the way through, and though it opens with the banger “Purple Haze,” I really love the groove and vocal swagger of the song “Fire.” To me, “Fire” has a heavier funk feel, almost like James Brown with more guitar power. Most people focus on Jimi’s guitar prowess, but I think he was a great vocalist and songwriter with his guitar brilliance, just adding flair to superb songs. I made several homemade Hendrix shirts when I was in high school and college just to have one for myself. One of the first “art” prints I ever made was a tribute to John Van Hamersveld’s Pinnacle Hendrix poster from 1968. I saw Hendrix as a cultural icon to reference and honor, even as I subverted his image. This one, however, is a pure, sincere tribute!

The Justice Woman print is a tribute to all warriors for justice whose determination and tenacity bend the arc of the universe toward the just future we need. Justice is a constantly evolving idea when it comes to various issues, but generally speaking, those willing to listen to their conscience, look their fellow human beings in the eyes, and stand up for what is right are setting an important example and can influence people to treat others as they’d like to be treated. I chose a woman for this image because, in my experience, women are more likely to fight for justice for all, while men often narcissistically serve their self-interest. Of course, this is a generalization, and there are generous people of every gender and orientation, but men have far too much of a monopoly on leadership roles. I’d like to see the female perspective equally represented in every facet of society. Especially with the current administration’s anti-diversity efforts creating roadblocks for equality, we need to do what is right! If you’ve ever stood up for any form of justice- equality, environmental protection, human rights, etc. THANK YOU! –Shepard

My team and I just finished this “People Power Mosaic” mural at the Barelas Rail Yards in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The location has historical significance as one of the economic drivers that helped to build Albuquerque. I was educated by the city’s arts and culture team, as well as by stakeholders from several local communities, about the rail yards, the culture of Albuquerque, and symbols of New Mexico. A consistent point made was that the blue-collar workers at the rail yards, many of whom were Native and Latino, did back-breaking work that has not always been recognized for its contribution to building Albuquerque. The worker on the left of the mural is meant to convey the hard physical effort and dignity of those laborers. I did a good bit of research and found out that Albuquerque native Soledad Chavez de Chacón was the first Latina Secretary of State of New Mexico elected in 1922, 3 years after women won the right to vote. She was also the acting governor of the state for 2 weeks in 1924. I was excited to highlight an important figure in New Mexico’s progressive history. I also included symbols in the mural, many of which originate from Native American culture but are synonymous with New Mexico, such as the Roadrunner, turquoise jewelry, the Three Sisters mountains, and fabric patterning. All of these motifs connect to things that are meaningful to me spiritually, like respecting nature and the delicate balance of ecosystems on which all life depends. The Yucca bloom symbolizes beauty, sturdiness, and resilience in challenging environmental conditions. Based on many conversations with locals, the spirit represented by the Yucca bloom is represented everywhere. I’m incredibly grateful for the education and trust given to me to take on this mural and the kind welcome I’ve been given. Thanks to Mayor Keller, City of Albuquerque Arts and Culture,

This “Radical Cat” image, which I get requests for constantly,  was originally made for a cat-themed art show a few years back. Since “cat video” is a euphemism for the dumbest, lowest-common-denominator content that can be found on the internet, I decided to try to tie my particular cat image to something meaningful to me in a playful way. I’ve long been a fan of the activism of the Black Panthers, and I thought I’d use another euphemism, “black cats”, meaning hip black folks in 60s/70s vernacular, to point to the fact that the Black Panthers were vilified and targeted by J. Edgar Hoover and the F.B.I. for being “radical” and a domestic terror threat (supposedly). It’s the same bullshit the D.O.J. under Trump is trying to use against anti-fascists and other protesters… don’t fall for it! If you don’t know about Hoover’s mission to destroy the Panthers, look it up. I’d recommend Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale’s book “Seize the Time.” And for those of you who are just into feline black cats, you are cool by me too, and a portion of the proceeds from this print will go to the ASPCA for the work they do to find homes for cats and dogs. Stay radical!

My team and I just finished this “Rise Above Mosaic” mural at the Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI). I had the chance to meet and chat with people there at SFAI and really enjoyed the experience. I made this “Make Art Not War” print new color variant because unfortunately, with many wars going on globally, the message continues to be relevant. Here is how my friend and museum curator Pedro Alonzo describes my “Make Art Not War” image:

“This print, created during the Iraq war, is an alternative phrase inspired by popular 1960s anti-war mantra,“Make love, not war.” In this case, Fairey asserts the need for creative rather than destructive acts. The Art Nouveau style of the image is an additional reference to the influence of Art Nouveau on hippie and psychedelic art of the ’60s, including many anti-Vietnam war posters.
Encased within a floral garland, the female figure appears more self-assured and real rather than ethereal. The placement of two paintbrushes below her portrait not only refers to a classical tool of art production but resembles spears, which when read alongside the directive to “OBEY” that appears on her neck, simultaneously makes the otherwise palatable message more pointed.”
