This “Hendrix Fire Letterpress” is an iteration of a Jimi Hendrix portrait I made but never released outside of inclusion in my “50 Shades of Black” boxset. I’ve been a fan of Jimi Hendrix since late high school. After what I call my “punk rock orthodoxy” phase waned, I was open to looking back to older music that had some of the same attitude and expression as punk. Hendrix stood out to me as being soulful and cool, but also intense and feral. The debut Hendrix album, Are You Experienced, is a masterpiece all the way through, and though it opens with the banger “Purple Haze,” I really love the groove and vocal swagger of the song “Fire.” To me, “Fire” has a heavier funk feel, almost like James Brown with more guitar power. Most people focus on Jimi’s guitar prowess, but I think he was a great vocalist and songwriter with his guitar brilliance, just adding flair to superb songs. I made several homemade Hendrix shirts when I was in high school and college just to have one for myself. One of the first “art” prints I ever made was a tribute to John Van Hamersveld’s Pinnacle Hendrix poster from 1968. I saw Hendrix as a cultural icon to reference and honor, even as I subverted his image. This one, however, is a pure, sincere tribute!

The Justice Woman print is a tribute to all warriors for justice whose determination and tenacity bend the arc of the universe toward the just future we need. Justice is a constantly evolving idea when it comes to various issues, but generally speaking, those willing to listen to their conscience, look their fellow human beings in the eyes, and stand up for what is right are setting an important example and can influence people to treat others as they’d like to be treated. I chose a woman for this image because, in my experience, women are more likely to fight for justice for all, while men often narcissistically serve their self-interest. Of course, this is a generalization, and there are generous people of every gender and orientation, but men have far too much of a monopoly on leadership roles. I’d like to see the female perspective equally represented in every facet of society. Especially with the current administration’s anti-diversity efforts creating roadblocks for equality, we need to do what is right! My team and I just finished this “People Power Mosaic” mural at the Barelas Rail Yards in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The location has historical significance as one of the economic drivers that helped to build Albuquerque. I was educated by the city’s arts and culture team, as well as by stakeholders from several local communities, about the rail yards, the culture of Albuquerque, and symbols of New Mexico. A consistent point made was that the blue-collar workers at the rail yards, many of whom were Native and Latino, did back-breaking work that has not always been recognized for its contribution to building Albuquerque. The worker on the left of the mural is meant to convey the hard physical effort and dignity of those laborers. I did a good bit of research and found out that Albuquerque native Soledad Chavez de Chacón was the first Latina Secretary of State of New Mexico elected in 1922, 3 years after women won the right to vote. She was also the acting governor of the state for 2 weeks in 1924. I was excited to highlight an important figure in New Mexico’s progressive history. I also included symbols in the mural, many of which originate from Native American culture but are synonymous with New Mexico, such as the Roadrunner, turquoise jewelry, the Three Sisters mountains, and fabric patterning. All of these motifs connect to things that are meaningful to me spiritually, like respecting nature and the delicate balance of ecosystems on which all life depends. The Yucca bloom symbolizes beauty, sturdiness, and resilience in challenging environmental conditions. Based on many conversations with locals, the spirit represented by the Yucca bloom is represented everywhere. I’m incredibly grateful for the education and trust given to me to take on this mural and the kind welcome I’ve been given. Thanks to Mayor Keller, City of Albuquerque Arts and Culture,

This “Radical Cat” image, which I get requests for constantly,  was originally made for a cat-themed art show a few years back. Since “cat video” is a euphemism for the dumbest, lowest-common-denominator content that can be found on the internet, I decided to try to tie my particular cat image to something meaningful to me in a playful way. I’ve long been a fan of the activism of the Black Panthers, and I thought I’d use another euphemism, “black cats”, meaning hip black folks in 60s/70s vernacular, to point to the fact that the Black Panthers were vilified and targeted by J. Edgar Hoover and the F.B.I. for being “radical” and a domestic terror threat (supposedly). It’s the same bullshit the D.O.J. under Trump is trying to use against anti-fascists and other protesters… don’t fall for it! If you don’t know about Hoover’s mission to destroy the Panthers, look it up. I’d recommend Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale’s book “Seize the Time.” And for those of you who are just into feline black cats, you are cool by me too, and a portion of the proceeds from this print will go to the ASPCA for the work they do to find homes for cats and dogs. Stay radical!

I made this “Make Art Not War” print new color variant because unfortunately, with many wars going on globally, the message continues to be relevant. Here is how my friend and museum curator Pedro Alonzo describes my “Make Art Not War” image:

“This print, created during the Iraq war, is an alternative phrase inspired by popular 1960s anti-war mantra,“Make love, not war.” In this case, Fairey asserts the need for creative rather than destructive acts. The Art Nouveau style of the image is an additional reference to the influence of Art Nouveau on hippie and psychedelic art of the ’60s, including many anti-Vietnam war posters.
Encased within a floral garland, the female figure appears more self-assured and real rather than ethereal. The placement of two paintbrushes below her portrait not only refers to a classical tool of art production but resembles spears, which when read alongside the directive to “OBEY” that appears on her neck, simultaneously makes the otherwise palatable message more pointed.”

I was asked by TIME, “What gives me hope about America?” No matter how things are going, I try to always remain hopeful. The courage and determination of kind-hearted people always gives me hope. Those people can be any age and from any background, but they stand up to injustice when they see it. I’m encouraged by lots of younger people who seem more open-minded and resistant to the narratives of prejudice. The history of the U.S. pursuing a balance of personal liberty with aspiration for equality gives me hope. We can embrace those ideas again. We are an innovative nation so nothing is impossible!

I wanted to reinterpret the Statue of Liberty because it is iconic and has wide appeal, making it a powerful and universal symbol, but I think there are several aspects of its symbolism and history that are worth focusing on. First, the statue was a goodwill and partnership gift from the French as a commemoration of the U.S. centennial and its dedication to democracy. The subtitle “Liberty Enlightening the World” was a nod the the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. as well as the freedoms and progressive politics defining the nation. Second, the statue became a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea. Third, the statue is inscribed with the Emma Lazarus poem “The New Colossus” which calls Lady Liberty the “Mother of Exiles” and includes the famous line “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. With all of that in mind, my modern day Statue of Liberty is a beautiful multi-ethnic woman representing the melting pot of America and the promise of pluralism in a more fair and just society. -Shepard

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prevents Congress from making laws respecting an establishment of religion; prohibiting the free exercise of religion; or abridging the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of peaceful assembly and the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. Under the Trump administration every one of those First Amendment provisions has been eroded including an extreme favoritism toward Christian nationalism and bias against other religious groups. Though the religious bias unconstitutionally ignores the legislated separation of church and state, I see the most severe threats to democracy as the Trump administration’s attacks on FREEDOM of SPEECH, FREEDOM of the PRESS, and FREEDOM of ASSEMBLY. These freedoms are essential safeguards against abuses of power by those elected to govern by we the people. In every nation that has succumbed to fascism, these three freedoms have been dismantled by those pursuing fascism and authoritarianism. This series serves as a reminder of why we must defend these bedrock principles of democracy in the face of fascist attacks.

Freedom of Assembly: To celebrate American leaders who bring our nation together, the Freedom of Assembly artwork draws inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington. This image seeks to inspire ordinary citizens to see themselves as active participants, not just spectators, who hold the power to uphold our freedoms and strengthen our democracy. Peaceful assembly is a critical demonstration of power to the people and a physical manifestation of commitment to a cause.

This Nouveau Angel print is inspired by my love of Art Nouveau design and symbolism. Art Nouveau explored a counter-narrative to industrialization in which harmony with nature and a respect for its untamable aspects were spiritually embodied by floral and female forms. Of course, angels symbolize guidance and protection, so the themes of Art Nouveau combined with my belief that women are leaders in the building of a more peaceful and just society led me directly to this combination of style and subject matter. A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales plus 100% of the net proceeds from VIP tickets will be donated to VoteRiders – a pro-democracy, pro-voter organization working to restore and strengthen democracy by eliminating confusing and restrictive ID-related barriers to the ballot box – and HeadCount who will also be on site to help fans register to vote and learn more about how to participate in upcoming elections.

Additional participating organizations and special guests will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Pixies are one of my favorite bands, but I have to admit my love of their music grew stronger over time because I was admittedly more one-dimensional when I first heard them in 1988/1989. Back then, I was mostly listening to punk and hardcore and thought I was too tough for more melodic “college rock,” except for Husker Du. I liked the Pixies well enough, but after repeated listens to Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, I started to recognize their genius. The Pixies combine dissonance, melody, quiet/loud, playfulness, surreal lyrics, punk, and surf vibes into such a unique, infectious, irreverent yet gorgeous sonic stew that I can’t believe it took me a minute to catch on. Let’s chalk it up to a youthful musical palette that took time to fully develop. Another important dynamic to mention is the unique vocal and musical interplay between primary songwriter Black Francis and bassist Kim Deal. No one sounded or sounds like the Pixies. They are also a fantastic live band, who I’ve seen many times since they reformed in 2004. So I’ll get to the point… I’ve wanted to do a poster for the Pixies for years, and when the chance finally came along, the venue is the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, no less! I channeled the Art Deco and Film Noir vibes of some of the band’s visuals, and these prints are the result! I’m grateful to the Pixies for their music and honored to collaborate!
