Obey Giant partnered with Unite in Advance on Art for Freedom, a multi-piece art series interpreting three First Amendment freedoms, speech, press, and assembly, and their role in upholding our democracy.

I never imagined I’d need to defend the First Amendment, but as our nation’s 250th anniversary approaches, we all need to be reminded of several vital principles enshrined in the Constitution soon after the United States was formed. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prevents Congress from making laws respecting an establishment of religion; prohibiting the free exercise of religion; or abridging the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of peaceful assembly and the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. Under the Trump administration every one of those First Amendment provisions has been eroded including an extreme favoritism toward Christian nationalism and bias against other religious groups. Though the religious bias unconstitutionally ignores the legislated separation of church and state, I see the most severe threats to democracy as the Trump administration’s attacks on FREEDOM of SPEECH, FREEDOM of the PRESS, and FREEDOM of ASSEMBLY. These freedoms are essential safeguards against abuses of power by those elected to govern by we the people. In every nation that has succumbed to fascism, these three freedoms have been dismantled by those pursuing fascism and authoritarianism. This series serves as a reminder of why we must defend these bedrock principles of democracy in the face of fascist attacks. -Shepard

As America recognizes its 250th anniversary, the series uses bold imagery and public participation to give people a moment to connect these freedoms to their own experience, and spark conversation and civic engagement around the freedoms that allow communities to exercise their rights. The art is now available to download at artforfreedom.org and we invite you to join us in posting from June 22 through July 20.

Created in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, this series examines the enduring significance of the freedoms of speech, press, and assembly in a democratic society, drawing on both national symbols and contemporary civic themes to highlight the people who exercise these rights every day, and at a moment when many Americans feel divided from one another and disconnected from public institutions, the series uses art as a unifying force, inviting audiences to consider how these freedoms connect us, how they shape our shared future, and why each generation has a responsibility to uphold them.

Freedom of the Press: The impactful visuals of the power of the pen and printing press recognize the importance of a free press that seeks the truth and shares the stories of American life and politics to inform our citizens, hold leaders accountable, and strengthen our democracy. Together, these symbols seek to honor the journalists who write the first draft of our nation’s history and serve as reminders of the enduring value of the written word.

Freedom of Speech: The Statue of Liberty, one of our nation’s most iconic landmarks, stands tall to raise her voice and embrace our nation’s flag. This globally recognized image, paired with a megaphone and patriotic imagery, calls on the audience to exercise their right to speak out and uphold the freedoms that sustain civic life. Democracy requires a multitude of voices and perspectives which are only truly enabled when free speech is protected. 

Freedom of Assembly: To celebrate American leaders who bring our nation together, the Freedom of Assembly artwork draws inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington. This image seeks to inspire ordinary citizens to see themselves as active participants, not just spectators, who hold the power to uphold our freedoms and strengthen our democracy. Peaceful assembly is a critical demonstration of power to the people and a physical manifestation of commitment to a cause.

This Nouveau Angel print is inspired by my love of Art Nouveau design and symbolism. Art Nouveau explored a counter-narrative to industrialization in which harmony with nature and a respect for its untamable aspects were spiritually embodied by floral and female forms. Of course, angels symbolize guidance and protection, so the themes of Art Nouveau combined with my belief that women are leaders in the building of a more peaceful and just society led me directly to this combination of style and subject matter. The Pixies are one of my favorite bands, but I have to admit my love of their music grew stronger over time because I was admittedly more one-dimensional when I first heard them in 1988/1989. Back then, I was mostly listening to punk and hardcore and thought I was too tough for more melodic “college rock,” except for Husker Du. I liked the Pixies well enough, but after repeated listens to Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, I started to recognize their genius. The Pixies combine dissonance, melody, quiet/loud, playfulness, surreal lyrics, punk, and surf vibes into such a unique, infectious, irreverent yet gorgeous sonic stew that I can’t believe it took me a minute to catch on. Let’s chalk it up to a youthful musical palette that took time to fully develop. Another important dynamic to mention is the unique vocal and musical interplay between primary songwriter Black Francis and bassist Kim Deal. No one sounded or sounds like the Pixies. They are also a fantastic live band, who I’ve seen many times since they reformed in 2004. So I’ll get to the point… I’ve wanted to do a poster for the Pixies for years, and when the chance finally came along, the venue is the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, no less! I channeled the Art Deco and Film Noir vibes of some of the band’s visuals, and these prints are the result! I’m grateful to the Pixies for their music and honored to collaborate!

The Obey Icon Face evolved at the end of 1995 into early 1996 out of the desire to move further away from an association with Andre the Giant and toward a more universal “Big Brother” (as in George Orwell’s 1984) image. I had become fascinated by the power of the streamlined graphic approach of the Russian Constructivist posters and wanted an icon that would integrate into work of this style. In the beginning of my street art campaign, I had been generating and proliferating propaganda using pop culture associations, but I had become more interested in commenting on propaganda with art having a direct stylistic parallel. The Obey Icon Face suited this need perfectly and with the Obey red box logo, inspired by Barbara Kruger, incorporated, the style and message of the design were complementary. The concept behind Obey is to provoke people who typically complain about life’s circumstances but don’t question things more deeply, to have to confront their own obedience. Obey is a very sarcastic form of reverse psychology.

Marilyn Monroe has fascinated me since I was a child. I was probably ten years old when I asked my dad “why is Marilyn Monroe so famous?” He answered something like “well, she was a symbol of American beauty and hope. She burned bright but tragically died young.” I was intrigued and watched Marilyn’s movies whenever they showed on cable. Seeing her on screen, I was mesmerized by her allure, her humor, and her vulnerability. I might not have been able to articulate it as a young person, but Marilyn had range and nuance that were magnetic and I leaned in. Later in high school I became interested in pop art and one of the genre’s most famous series of images are Andy Warhol’s Marilyn portraits. Warhol’s Marilyns are superb in their use of color and effectively achieve his goal of reducing her to a high-contrast iconic, but impersonal representation. However, iconic glamour is only one dimension of Marilyn. When I was presented with the opportunity to make art of Marilyn based on photos by Milton H. Greene from 1956 when she was at the height of her powers, I was struck by the intimacy and vulnerability of the images. To me, these images called for a much more delicate approach compared to Warhol’s in order to convey more nuance and humanity. Even though Marilyn showed courage and conviction fighting for civil rights, equality, and against McCarthyism, her mental health struggles are widely recognized. I felt it was important to depict her precarious dance between wide-eyed aspiration and shying away from the glare of the spotlight. I hope these images, “Marilyn Sunrise” and “Marilyn Sunset” inspire an empathetic look at Marilyn’s complex humanity and remind us that we are all teetering between strength and fragility.

Peace is not the absence of disagreement, but the ability to resolve disagreements without violence. Peace takes more thought, more kindness, more diplomacy, and more creativity, but the result is a more powerful investment in our collective future. The dove is internationally recognized as a symbol of peace, making it an ideal communication tool. I hope the message reaches all who see it across nations and cultures. -Shepard

This “Third Eye Open Peace” mural in Naples incorporates a portrait I originally made for my Make Art Not War print back during the Iraq War. The mural is a public art companion piece to my “Power To the Peaceful” exhibition opening at Gallerie D’Italia on May 6th. I have long promoted peace through my art and activism and this mural incorporates a peace sign and peace text (PACE in Italian) while also including a third eye blooming like a flower, The third eye represents a dialogue with one’s inner self, higher consciousness, and a quest for enlightenment, all of which are essential to achieve peace and harmony. I’ve often used the phrase “eyes open-mind open” and I think “third eye open” is a similar but slightly weightier idea because it addresses looking not only outward to observe, but inward as well. This mural, which is part of the Dear Iran project, was inspired by what Dear Iran’s founder Reza Moazezi, had created with the tulip. The tulip is a flower that has symbolism in Iran, but it is also a flower I find to be really beautiful. I use flowers in a lot of my art because I find that they are very universal and help to bridge gaps culturally. Every different nation, every different culture, and every different religion finds flowers beautiful and symbolically powerful. Flowers are about hope and resilience. So with what’s going on in Iran, doing my version of the tulip growing from the barbed wire was a way of supporting the project. It was a way of using some of the same iconography that people will see in the Dear Iran project and showing a bit of solidarity on human rights no matter where you are.

This new “Uplift Justice” offset is based on a mural I painted in Philadelphia last year.  It was important to me to create an image in Philly, a city often considered the birthplace of American democracy, that connects the ideals of the past with the questions we face today. Nearly 250 years after the founding of this country, we have an opportunity to ask ourselves what the next 250 years should look like—a continuation of where we’re headed, or maybe a reset.
I chose a woman as the central figure because I see women as natural peacemakers, builders of family and community—the qualities we need most right now. My hope is that this art invites people to reflect on justice, history, and the values that guide us today and into the future.

This “Ominous Ripples” print is a metaphor for the environmental peril we have created and the struggles future generations will face just to navigate climate-related problems like super storms, drought, famine, population displacement, and, of course, rising sea levels. We are already treading water, drowning and suffocating even if many of us haven’t comprehended the scale of the problem or reach of the ripples yet. The lack of progress on climate change and pollution is largely due to the oversized influence of deep-pocketed oil companies. Billionaires, corporations, and politicians aren’t going to save the planet so we the people need to support a transition to responsible energy sources. Last month, hundreds of people picked up “Paid Agitator” and “Domestic Terrorist” protest posters to participate in the No Kings March. Each person marching that day showed up because they believe in democracy. These prints serve as a mirror to those committing the dehumanizing attacks on immigrants and protesters and for ICE and the Trump administration to experience their own rhetoric thrown back at them. These prints are a mirror, not a solution. The solution is to treat all people with dignity and as equally human. This “Not a Terrorist” print is a reminder that despite pervasive fear-mongering, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab rhetoric we are all equally human and deserving of equal human rights. I’ve traveled across the world and found kind, creative, thoughtful people everywhere I’ve been, including the Middle East and Africa. People are people everywhere and anyone who says otherwise has an agenda to promote hate and divide that should be rejected. Travel is an eye and mind opener I’d highly recommend!

This print is based on an art piece in my solo exhibition Modular Frequency. It is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.’s non-violent efforts on behalf of civil rights and equality.
