I can’t tell if I’m tired lately just because I’m getting older and I wear out easier, or if I’m tired because we’ve been working outside on a ton of garden projects lately.

In any event, I’m sleeping really, really good these days.

Remember the English lavender I started from seed a few months ago? Well look at the plants now!

We planted a row of 18 lavender plants yesterday and if all goes well, by this time next year I should be able to harvest armfuls of lavender. 

I ended up with 17 extra English lavender plants. I’ll have to see if Kiln Guy wants any before I set them out on the garden trolley for sale. Kiln Guy gets first {free} dibs on all my extra plants.

The cabbage, radishes and chives I’ve got growing in the elevated garden beds are all doing really well.

I harvested my first radish the other day. The flavor was great. Not too spicy.

I think I’ll pull up a few more today. Who knows, maybe I’ll even have enough to set out a few bunches of them on the garden trolley Saturday morning.

Raised Bed #1 

12 tomato plants, carrots and beets.

Raised Bed #2

12 tomatoes, 2 rows of carrots and basil just popping through the soil.

Raised Bed #3

12 tomato plants, 2 rows of beets, 2 rows of peppers and 1 row of turnips.

Raised Bed #4

1 row of peppers, 2 rows of green beans, 1 row of radishes and 3 rows of leeks. 

I also planted some cucumber, zucchini and giant sunflowers alongside the house and planted pole beans along a few different sections of the fence.

Plus, there are some pole beans and Christmas lima beans getting ready to throw out some tendrils on the tall trellises on the side of the house. 

In another few weeks, the garden should be looking really, really good. And hopefully there will be beans, zucchini and tomatoes to harvest too. I LOVE this time of year!

Walmart. I usually pop in once or twice a year for some random thing simply because we happen to be driving by one. 

To put it mildly, I’m not a fan of Walmart and will pretty much do anything to avoid walking into one.  I know there are tons of people who love shopping at Walmart, but I am not one of them. 

We were in Walmart back on March 29th of THIS YEAR {I have no idea why} and I took a picture of the price of ice. Walmart was selling a 7 pound bag of ice for $1.88.

The reason I took a picture was because back in early June of 2024 I snapped a photo of the price of ice at a Walmart store and it was $4.58. Which I thought it was an excessive amount since the local grocery store {Market Basket} was selling it for only $1.99 a bag at the time.

Yada yada yada… We stopped by Walmart yesterday and the price of ice is now $5.48 a bag. In March a 7 pound bag of ice was only $1.88. 

Supply and demand? Dynamic pricing? I guess if more people are buying ice in June vs the end of March it makes sense from a business perspective to charge more?

But I also think it’s crazy. Do you know much is ice going for where YOU live? Have you noticed that the price is a lot higher during the summer months than any other time of year?

Side note: The HH spotted a purse in the middle of an aisle and after watching two Walmart employees walk right past it, he walked over, picked up the purse and brought it to the customer service desk. 

As we were walking out to the car the HH pointed to an elderly lady getting into her car with the purse. So that was good news. 

Jacking up the price of ice though? No bueno.

I’ve been making this cinnamon peach crisp recipe for years and I made it again last night for dinner {yes dinner!} thanks to all the peaches we have on hand these days.

This recipe is SO GOOD, that I wanted to share the recipe again for all of those who may have missed it the first time.

Ahhh cinnamon peach crisp. It’s the perfect way to start the day. Fresh fruit, a little dairy {ice cream} and you’ve got yourself a winning combination to tackle the day ahead.

Or you could make it for dessert, that works too.

This recipe for cinnamon peach crisp is so good, you’re going to wish you bought more peaches! Seriously, I made the first one and then quickly made a second to pop in the freezer to enjoy later this winter. So do yourself a favor, plan ahead, save some time and make a double batch. 

This recipe is not only super easy to make, but a true comfort food as well. Cinnamon peach crisp, this recipe is a keeper!

Cinnamon Peach Crisp Recipe

Ingredients

For The Peach Filling

3 pounds peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons tapioca granules
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon lemon juice
a sliver of butter to butter the dish

For The Crumb Topping

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

With a sliver of butter, butter a 9 inch casserole dish and set aside.

In a large bowl, toss the peaches, sugar, tapioca granules, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice until evenly coated.

Pour the peach mixture into the prepared casserole dish and set aside.

For The Crumb Topping

Using your fingers, cut the butter into the other topping ingredients. Pour crumb mix loosely over the peaches.

Bake the cinnamon peach crisp at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake for another 20-30 minutes until the crumb topping is a nice golden brown and the peach juices are bubbly.

If you notice the crust starting to get too dark, cover with foil.

Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream or gobble it up plain.

Remember the arborvitae tree the HH couldn’t plant because there was a bird’s nest in it? 

Well the birds have left the nest and haven’t been back to the tree in a while so yesterday he decided to dig a hole to plant the tree.  And well, now I want to dig up the whole yard and see what’s hiding under the dirt.

This is what he found after digging about a foot down.

Another minute later he came over to show me another jar. This one had a root growing in it {and out!} of it. 

How crazy is that? 

I tried pulling the root out and he told me I’d never get it out. IMPOSSIBLE he said. Can’t be done. It’s stuck in there.

Well, maybe it is for now… But once the wood dries out I bet I’ll be able to shake the {now clipped} root out.

There were more bottles, broken blue glass and a few shards of pottery.

Are there any antique dealers out there? Do you know what company this symbol is from? It looks like a unicorn to me. 

Seriously, all this, from ONE hole! I feel like there is SO MUCH more out there. There’s gotta be. We could be sitting on a gold mine! 

Or at the very least, a coffee can full of someone’s forgotten treasures… Right? 

We do know that before the house had indoor plumbing, there was a two seater off the back of the house {yikes!} so there could be a whole trove of treasures in that spot.

It kind of makes me want to bury a couple of jars out back. I wonder if anyone 50-100 years from now would think an old salsa jar was exciting. Who knows.

Get Back To The Basics + Learning to Unplug

And a woodstove. 

That being said… I stayed unplugged from early Friday morning to just a few minutes ago and it was really, really nice. We watched the bird channel from the kitchen.

I moved an exhausted little birdy that was sitting in our driveway Saturday morning to a safer spot so she could regain her strength. A few hours later she flew away and the next day I found her napping in one of the birdfeeders.

It was the cutest thing ever.

In The Kitchen

More peaches!!

The HH received his third delivery of peaches. This time around they were the Sunland variety. The day after the peaches arrived he received a box of pineapple!!!

Someone is seriously wanting to make sure this guy is getting his vitamin C. If we get any more fruit deliveries, we’ll have to open a smoothie stand!

Kitchen Goals For This Year

• Master the pear frangipane tart from Standard Baking Company. 
• Put my Weck jars to use.
• Use two bins of beans {working on it}

Rug Hooking

Last week I finished my Star Spangled Whale rug {it was huge!} and so I decided to hook something small from my “someday I’ll hook these bin” before I start another big rug. 

Rug Hooking Goals For This Year

• Finish drawing out all my patterns, making kits, dyeing wool by March 31st. 
• Release 10 new rug hooking patterns/kits.  {4 down 6 to go}
• Hook 27 of the patterns from the “someday I’ll hook these” bin. {6 down 21 to go}

Go New Places – See New Things

All travel plans are currently on hold but The HH mentioned possibly going to Montreal in the fall.  It’s within driving distance, so maybe? I don’t know. I think it would be pretty hard to beat Quebec City. 

Travel Goals For This Year

• Travel someplace {internationally} that I’ve never been before.
• Travel somewhere in Maine {overnight} that I haven’t been before.

Places I’ve Been So Far This Year

• Boston {Birthday getaway}
• NYC {Girls getaway}

Walk And Stretch More

I will say that I am a bit relieved that I won’t be hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up again {sleeping on the dirt and not showering for 3 days}.

We went on a few walks and went out for ice cream once. It’s been pretty warm around here the past week or so and we’ve mostly been staying close to home and working on home and garden projects.

Walking/Stretching Goals For This Year

• Get into some sort of stretching routine
• Fast walk a 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon 

Garden

The raised beds are doing great! And so is the lawn. It’s hard to believe it’s only been about 7 weeks since we hydroseeded. 

We’ve got a proper backyard now and we are loving it. It might take me all summer to get the back fence painted {2 coats!} but it will sure look nice when it’s finished.

Garden Goals For This Year

• Rework the driveway and garden areas {DONE!}
• Go crazy and plant a ridiculous amount of flowers {working on it}
• Step out of my comfort zone and plant some flowers I’ve never planted before {DONE!}

And last but not least, I finally got the wooden beams painted white. We put the room back together and the floors look so much better than before it’s crazy.

We’ll remove the track lighting and put up something else in the fall but for now, we’re done in there. And that feels sooo good.
