Welcome to Over The Edge Podcast, the podcast where I speak with individuals experiencing success in their chosen fields and they share with me their secrets of courageous action and positive habits. Listen in as they answer the question; what does it take to push you over the edge towards a big goal or dream, and keep you pushing? In this episode I speak with none other than Daniel J Lewis.

As an award winning podcaster, Daniel J Lewis helps others launch and improve their own podcasts for sharing their passions and finding success. Daniel creates training resources like SEO for Podcasters and podcasting tools like My Podcast Reviews; he offers one-on-one consulting and group training like Podcasters’ Society and is a keynote speaker on podcasting and social media. Daniel hosts a network of award nominated shows covering how to podcast (The Audacity to Podcast), clean comedy, and the unofficial podcast for ABC’s hit drama Once Upon A Time, Daniel also writes about entrepreneurship and technology at Danieljlewis.net

Daniel shares with me how the Audacity to Podcast came about and what inspired him to get into podcasting. He found out about podcasts and would listen to them in the car on his laptop before they were available on mobile devices. He already had a background in tech and web design and was able to figure out how to create his own podcast and teach others to do the same.

Daniel talks about turning your podcast into a profitable online business. He says it should be used as a way to support another business related to the podcast in the way that Daniel helps people to create and improve their own podcasts with his business. His advice; don’t go into podcasting with the thought that you are going to make a ton of money from it.

Daniel’s Advice for Overcoming Self-Doubt

Have a plan

Sit down and actually plan out what you want to do, write down what you want to achieve. If you are starting a podcast; write down who you want to interview, what you want the topics to be about and where you want to see the podcast go in the future

Don’t wait for things to be perfect

At the same time don’t plan down to every last detail so that you never get started. Have a plan but also realize that things are always going to come up and your plan will never go perfectly, take the first steps anyway.

Daniel’s Daily Habits

Your morning routine begins the night before; set yourself up for success the next day with your evening routine. Clear your mind; write down what you want to accomplish and what is troubling you to get it out. Put the phone away, don’t work on business or email right before bed to avoid staying up too late. Make sure you are well rested so you can start your morning refreshed.

Morning Routine

Daniel starts out each day by reading the Bible and prayer. He is sure to schedule his goals for each day and even goes as far as scheduling appointments with himself to take time to think and write. Build your schedules around what will propel you forward for success.

Life Lessons Daniel Has Learned

Don’t be afraid to pay for things. “free always costs”; in time and knowledge if not money

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Drop the superhero mentality, don’t be afraid to delegate if possible. Delegation scales. My Podcast Reviews would not exist if Daniel would have tried to do it himself and not delegated it to others. Change from solopreneur to CEO. Do the things that are crucial to the success of your business and automate or delegate the rest if possible. If you are starting out and don’t have the means to hire someone; look for volunteers or a student looking to intern with you.

How Does He Define Success?

Each of us defines our own success. For Daniel it is having a job that he loves and a life that can be separate from that. He calls it a work-life integration, not work like balance. Success for him is being recklessly generous with his time and money and resources. It’s not how much we are getting but how much are we giving!

Books Daniel Recommends

The Bible. Especially Proverbs for the life and business lessons that it offers that he is able to apply in his everyday life.

Virtual Freedom by Chris Ducker

What does it take to push Daniel Over the Edge?

Putting aside your fear and realizing that what you try could fail horribly. Keep moving forward, keep your eyes on the prize; your dream, and don’t be distracted by the little things that seem to want to slow you down and hold you back.

Mitchell Davis received his Bachelors in Psychology from Bloomsburg University and has his Master’s in Exercise Science. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Sports Psychology. He is certified Performance Enhancement Specialist and a Certified Speed Specialist. He was the Head Strength Coach for the football and track teams at ELCO High School and the Head Indoor Track Coach there as well. He was also the Head Strength Coach at 5 Stones Fight Club, a local MMA and Grappling Gym. Mitch is also the co-author of Bull: A Book for Fathers & Sons. In this episode Mitch teaches me about the psychology of fitness and how to motivate yourself to make big changes in your health. Here’s the interview.

What can listeners do to get started with a fitness routine?

Getting started is the hardest part. We love consistency and the unknown can be scary. Find something that can drive you to get to the gym. Find out what drives you, do you want to be able to be more active with your children? Take the crawl, walk run approach. Don’t be afraid to ask others in the gym for advice. Find a personal trainer to support your journey and hold yourself accountable

What advice can you offer for overcoming self-doubt?

Ask yourself- what goal can you set that is bigger than you?

Ask yourself- what is it that is going to push me through the pain

Be willing to sacrifice for success

What’s a failure he experienced and how he got through it?

Drinking in high school and getting caught and getting kicked off the soccer team. Got a tough lesson from the school’s track coach who didn’t let him feel sorry for himself. This taught him to never make excuses and take responsibly for his own actions.

Ask yourself: Why are you putting excuses in front of potential success? Really think about this and the goals you want to accomplish, remind yourself of this every day.

What drives him to keep going and push hard?

Having a chip on his shoulder, feeling like he needs to prove himself. Breaking his own records and pushing boundaries

What are 3 Life Lessons that Mitch has learned?

Embrace the Suck; be willing to go through the pain, to do the hard work and things you don’t necessarily want to because you know there will be a reward on the other side. Work through the struggle and the hardship

There Is always someone who is going to work harder than you, push yourself, beat your own records

Die first, then Quit! Don’t give up. Keep getting back up no matter how many times you fail

  How does he define success?

Doing what others have told him what others have told him he could not. Going over the edge. His father always told him that no man is going to accomplish success in his comfort zone

What does it take to push him over the edge?

Having people in his life that are a lot better than him at what he is trying to do. Learning lessons from others in his life; Coaches especially as well as his father

Take a break from time to time so you can come back at it that much stronger

“99% of our life is not worth giving a shit but it’s that 1% that is! But too often do we get caught up in that 99%, don’t worry about if what you are doing is popular, if people are going to like it or you’re going to look cool. Focus on the 1%; family, relationships, business and self-improvement.

Take the initiative to make a change in your life today!

Last words of wisdom- never assume that your life is that bad that you can’t make a change, don’t be a cope out and let excuses gyp you of your success.

Nada began her career as a performer with The Young Americans, singing and dancing. The Young Americans is a non-profit organization and performing group based in Southern California focused on using music to build self-confidence, teamwork and understanding in students and audiences around the world. After discovering that she had a gift for helping others realize the potential in themselves, Nada transferred into director/educator role with the organization. She went on to become a top executive with educational corporation while still maintaining her director role with The Young Americans. She has since resigned from her executive role and now coach’s women to be confident and empowered with her business and podcast Rise Up For You.

What is Rise Up For You? A company based around 6 elements- relationships, investing, self-worth, entrepreneurship, love and health. Nada teaches these six elements to clients and encourages them to empower themselves and reach their full potential in all areas. What she calls your perfect 10.

“Confidence in yourself is key to all the other aspects of yourself.”

“Find your level 10 in all areas of your life and strive for it every day.”

How Do You Rise Up For You and Develop Killer Self-Confidence?

Steps to develop the confidence and clarity.

Consider the six elements of your life: relationships, investing, self-worth, entrepreneurship, love and health

Grade yourself on all 6 elements to determine where you are on a scale of 1-10 in each category.

Ask yourself- what does a 10 in each area look like for me personally?

Reflection: Keep asking yourself these questions as you improve in each area. Your level 10 should expand and grow bolder as you do. Keep working towards improvement

Get Over Self Doubt! How?

Re-engineer your thought patterns – Ask yourself where are these thoughts coming from is? Why are you doubting yourself? When you go onstage for example- why do you doubt yourself? Have others told you that you don’t speak well? Did you have a stutter? Ask yourself where the self-doubt comes from. Understanding the origins and how skewed the view really is will help you to overcome it.

Boost Your Self- Confidence on a Daily Basis

If you’re not feeling great about yourself, do things that make you feel great! Boost your confidence in this way.

Figure out what you’re great at so you do it more often and gain confidence from your positive performance

Stop the Negative Self-Talk With These 5 Steps

Don’t let negative thoughts sabotage you. Letting them drag you down for days at a time is what holds you back

1st- Stop and reflect (What am I good at? What am I doing well?)

2nd Say these things out loud

3rd Say them to yourself in front of the mirror

4th write them down if possible

5th For every doubt- counter it with 3 positive things about yourself

Nada’s Morning Routine

First, she is ok with not always being so rigid with morning routine but this is what she normally does:

5 minute journal- She writes down 3 affirmations, 3 goals for the day, what makes me happy

Coffee.

Meditates - Uses App Relax Melodies-

Gym after 30-60 minutes

Nada’s Other Positive Habits

Plans Weeks out ahead of time

Reviews Weekly Goals daily in her planner

    Builds consistency through routines

She is over prepared and uses 5 planners to stay on task

Nada’s Top 3 Life and Business Lessons

Honesty without compassion is cruelty- practice constructive criticism, think of others feelings when offering criticism or instruction

Always keep your hands dirty- know all the aspects of the job and be involved in everything. Be in the trenches with employees

Always remember that it’s not about you: “It’s not about you and the minute that it stops being about you, it becomes about you.” Always put others first, always think how I can help the other person.

How does she define success?

By the level of happiness you have, it’s not about the external factors.

“Success is you consistently going after your dream life”

https://overtheedgepodcast.libsyn.com/singer-and-songwriter-celeste-aldridge-on-tackling-career-change-with-confidence

Celeste Aldridge began her music career at a time in life when some might say it couldn’t be done. After deciding that she wanted to sing Celtic music, Celeste began practicing incessantly, taking vocal lessons and learning from a mentor. In a relatively short time she began touring the tri-state area, recorded multiple CDs, and began writing her own music and recording it. Celeste was also the co-host of Songwriters Workshop TV and is currently the worship leader at the First Presbyterian Church in Milford, PA

In this episode I ask Celeste what it takes to have the courage to go against the odds, start a new career path and go over the edge towards your dreams.

Celeste tells me about 3 things that were crucial to her success starting out with a new career

Narrowing down what you love and what you are good at; your gift

Connecting with a community who is already doing what you are gifted at; for her it meant going to open mike night and reaching out to other musicians

Find a mentor; Look for someone who is skilled at doing what you want to do and learn from them, study under them and be willing to pay if you can’t find someone who will do it for free. For Celeste this meant taking voice lessons and learning from a skilled musician

"Love what you are doing so much that you don’t get discouraged by the doubters"

“If you don’t love it enough you won’t stick with it but that’s OK because then you can move on to finding what it is you truly love.”

When you really love something you will make it work. “Shoot for the moon and you’ll land in the stars”

Be willing to try new things, don’t be too quick to label yourself

Be willing to start with a new goal or career but realize that you every time you start over you still need to put in the work to see the success you desire

Celeste’s Daily Routine

Morning tea, prayer and daily devotionals, practices singing and then goes on a walk

Celeste believes in the importance of daily routines and regular practice, she says that she does not believe she would be where she is now without her daily routine to keep her centered and focused as well as regular practice.

Her favorite book that had an impact on her life: The Phantom Tollbooth

How Does She Define Success

In this episode of Over The Edge Podcast I speak with Paul Almquist. Paul was first introduced to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)at 15 and has been training with the sport ever since. He first went pro at the age of 22 and has had an incredibly successful career. Paul is a National Guardsman; Military Police Division who graduated at the top of his class with high honors. Paul overcame a lot of adversity from dropping out of high school to reading college level books daily and being selected out of a class of over 200 to deliver the commencement speech at his basic training graduation. Paul recently opened a new chapter in his life as a Personal Trainer with Tier 1 Fitness where he is coaching clients to become the best they can be and "Get Better Together".

Paul regularly participates in long distance competitive races including the 28 mile March Of The Fallen to pay tribute to his fallen military brothers.

In addition to his impressive accolades Paul still finds the time to put family first and volunteers regularly with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and at a local Personal Care Home.

Listen in to one of the best Motivational Speeches I've ever heard from one of the most fearless and courageous men I know.

We talk about the different aspects of MMA and training with the sport

Grappling, Krav Maga, Boxing, Karate, Muay Thai and more

Paul shares his Military Transition and what inspired him to join

After losing fight it motivated him to make a switch

The military taught him to hold himself to higher standard, be more disciplined, and make his bed every morning

We talk about Personal Training

Paul wanted to help more people and he felt that personal training was the way to go

He trains in anything from losing weight and getting in shape to those looking to train in MMA

Paul shares his insane Daily Routine

He is always out the door by 6am and on his way to the gym smiling

Gratitude journal- He writes down 3 things he is thankful for every day

He reads daily every chance he gets- Currently reading: Gung Ho! Kenneth Blanchard and The Shortness Of Life- Seneca

Paul shares his workout routine with his trainer and owner of Tier 1 Fitness Mitch Davis

Program –Full Body Strength Training

Tues- Legs Squats, Deadlifts, Low Body, Power Cleans, Snatches

Wed- Core day Top Ab exercises- Hanging leg raises, decline crunch with ball toss.

Thurs –Upper body bench press, pushups, incline bench pullups, lat pulldowns, shrugs, bent rows and resistance bands incorporated

Mitch works with other MMA fighters, wrestlers, athletes and is able to work on specific areas.

Paul's Evening Routine

250 rep of core before bed, pushups, stretches

Paul recommends yoga stretching and always using proper form whether stretching or strength training

Loves to read, believes in self-education

Believes in writing to let go of emotions and negativity

I ask Paul: What was holding him back from achieving his dreams?

A: Fear – fear is what you make of it, fear of the unknown is what was holding him back from achieving his dreams? Lack of education and fear of passing the ASVAP, Negative relationships can hold us back

-What allowed him to conquer fear?

A: Just doing it! Pushing boundaries, take a small step out and every little thing he accomplished gave him self confidence to go out and achieve the next thing

“You’re gonna fail and its gonna hurt but trying and failing is so much better than sitting back and saying I could have done that but never knowing “

"It’s ok to fail, It’s part of life and you can gain confidence from failing and learning"

He says the problem comes when we don't accept fear and try to run away from it

Paul shares a failure he experienced and a lesson he learned from it – His pro fight knock out

He let outside influences get into his head and interrupt his training, leading up to the fight he didn’t put his all into it. He allowed negativity to creep in

“The fight me losing, yes that was the failure moment but it wasn’t just one night it was the weeks leading up to the fight”

In life we don’t always stick to our goals and we go at it not 100% into it, we don’t grind and we fail.

It’s tempting to think, “I should have just kept my hands up” but you should have kept your hands up in the training leading up to that fight

The key lesson: Every day matters! Today matters just as much as that fight you are training for! You have to build it up, treat every moment like this is a moment I could fail or succeed

"Every day you have to grind and work and treat it like it’s your last"

The days that are the hardest are the days to go the hardest

His Definition of Success

Paul thinks success is doing what you are happy and passionate about. Feeling joyful and happy about what you’re doing

"Success is how you feel when you get up in the morning and if you feel joy and happiness you are probably doing the right thing and therefore very successful"

Who do you think of when think of success?

Jevon Weixler

Manager at Weixler Diversified Cleaning Services, Board Member Making a Difference of Lebanon Pa (A non-profit organization dedicated to positively impacting a city and its youth), Big Brother, Avid Volunteer

Adrian Caan

National Guard Drill Sergeant, Founder Warrior for Life and Xfitt Combatives and Fitness, MMA coach,

What makes them successful?

Because they are determined to help others. They are successful because of the way they make others feel by positively influencing them

What’s one book that had a massive impact that you would recommend?

Leadership And Self-Deception by The Arbinger Institute

What do you think it takes to push you over the edge towards a big goal or dream?

Mindset- Always work towards a better world, Stay positive.

Join me for episode 6 as I learn from author, CEO and inventor Dr. Steve Levinson what it takes to step out in courage towards a big dream and achieve massive success.

This is Over The Edge Podcast

Dr. Steve Levinson is a clinical psychologist who realized the universal problem of lack of follow through and sought out a solution. He began intense research on how to solve this issue and in doing so invented a device to help individuals do just that, the MotivAider. Through this research he also discovered a proven model for following through on your intentions which he shares in his book, Following Through. Dr. Steve is on a mission to help people follow through on their own good intentions and part of the equation is having The Power To Get Things Done (Whether You Feel Like It Or Not). In his new book by this title, Dr. Levinson shares how to have this power.

Highlights

Dr. Levinson shares his journey of discovery that led him to the invention of the MotivAider

He talks about a failure he experienced and one of the biggest lessons he learned:

Know when to quit if you're just banging your head against the wall

His attitude towards failure? Failure is a good teacher, learn from it when you can

His definition of success? Doing what you intend to do and acting on your intentions

How to process of writing had a massive impact on his life. His advice- If you ever get the chance to write a book, do it!

What gives you the power to get things done?

- Putting yourself in circumstances that force you to do what you say you want to do

What does he mean by that?

Dr. Levinson shares the story of a man who set an intention of getting to the gym every morning but often would sleep in. After learning about this concept he left his Only stick of deodorant at the gym so when he got up in the morning he was forced to go if he didn't want to stink all day.

Dr. Levinson's Top #1 Habit

- Guarding the intentions he keeps and being very selective about the new ones he adds. He look at intentions as a major life event, as important as taking on a new job or getting married

What does it take to push Dr. Steve over the edge?
