The festival has a very long tradition and represents the modern bodypainting art movement. Artists from 47 nations participated in this years 17th edition of the World Bodypainting Festival - the championships for bodypainters in various categories such as 'Brush and Sponge', 'Airbrush' and 'Special Effects'. The artists had to visually interpret two themes, 'Pop Art - the art of popular culture' and 'AI - Artificial Intelligence'. Visitors, artists and spectators alike were stunned by all of the colorful results and also greatly entertained by lots of performances on stage. The venue is situated on a peninsula in the middle of Pörtschach and framed picturesquely by the turquoise lake Wörthersee. It takes its name from the village of Sils im Engadin. The lake lies at an altitude of 1797 meters above sea level, between Maloja Pass and Lake Silvaplana. With a surface area of 4.1 km², Lake Sils is the largest lake of the Engadine. It is also the largest natural lake in the Alps lying above 1,000 meters. The lake was formed by a prehistoric landslide dam, similarly to Lake Silvaplana. The wooded Chastè peninsula extends into the lake at its north-eastern end. At the end of the peninsula there is a plaque to Friedrich Nietzsche with a passage from Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Near the peninsula is located the wooded island of Chaviolas, the largest in Lake Sils. In winter, the crosscountry slope crosses Lake Sils, with the section being part of the famous Engadin Skimarathon annually. The shooting is with the Swiss Army ordonnance rifle, SIG SG 550. The winner is named King of the Marksmen. The custom dates back to the seventeenth century, when all boys were required to practice their shooting during the summer holidays. The final marksmanship contest served as a type of examination. Later on, the compulsory event was modified to voluntary cadet training. The competition is held in the shooting range at Albisgüetli to the south-west of the city center, on the slope of Üetliberg.
