From Athens

By car

The options for those travelling by car or motorbike are mainly two:

Through the Old National road, where you drive through highway Athens – Patras, past Rio-Antirio bridge continue on to Ionian Highway to Amfilochia – Vonitsa – Aktion – Preveza till Igoumenitsa. The route covers 470 km and it takes an average of 5 1/2 hours to cross. There are five tolls on the way (Elefsina, Isthmus, Zevgolatio, Rio-Antirio Bridge, Angelokastro) with a total cost of about 23,00Euros.
Athens – Paxos (Old National road)

Through the New National road, where you drive through highway Athens – Patras, past Rio-Antirio bridge, continue on to Ionian Highway all the way until 3 km before Ioannina, where it intersects with Egnatia Odo on which you head to Igoumenitsa. The route covers 440 km and it takes an average of 3 1/2 hours to cross. There are six tolls you will go through (Elefsina, Isthmus, Zevgolatio, Rio-Antirio Bridge, Angelokastro, Tirion Station) at a total cost of about 26,5euros.

Athens – Paxos (New National road)

The traveller can go from Igoumenitsa to Paxos by Ferry Boat of S&L Corfu Ferries. There are 1-2 trips daily, during the summer season, depending on the day of the week. Tickets can be purchased at the port. The cost per passenger is around 11,00Euros for adults and 5.50Euros for children (Free for children under 4years old). The cost of transporting your vehicle is about 42,30Euros for cars, 9,00Euros for motorcycles up to 250cc and 12,80Euros for motorcycles bigger than 250cc.

By Bus

If you are travelling by means of public transportation, there are 2 main choices :

Traveling by intercity buses: KTEL Paxos is the best choice when traveling on a budget. During the summer months there are at least 2 routes every week; departing from opposite the building of the Traffic Police of Athens at Stathmo Larisis. Contact KTEL Paxos for the departure schedule and to reserve your seat. Traveling by KTEL Paxos is the best choice since they work in connection with the Ferry Boat and therefore, will transport you and your luggage directly at the port of Paxos.

KTEL Thesprotias depart from Kifisos KTEL station daily, have frequent trips throughout the day and will transport you and your luggage to the port of Igoumenitsa. Unlike KTEL Paxos, with this choice, depending on your departure and arrival time, you might have to wait a few hours to the port of Igoumenitsa or even spend the night there, until you can board on the next Ferry Boat to Paxos island.

The main highway connecting Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa is Egnatia Odos. The distance between the two is around 320 kilometres and it takes about 3 1/4 hours to cross. There are 4 tolls on the way and the cost is 8.50Euros for the cars while it is about 6.00Euros for the motorcycles.

For those traveling without a vehicle and who want to visit the island of Paxos there are frequent daily cruises leaving Parga ( as well as from the city of Sivoton ) that stop at all three central villages of the island as well as various other parts of it including Antipaxos. The cruise lasts approximately one hour.

Lakka – General Information

Lakka is one of the three main villages of Paxos island. It is located 7km north of Gaios, which is the capital of the island. Lakka is situated between two beaches that create a natural circular bay. The village is surrounded by green hills that create a picturesque and charming landscape.

Lakka is a safe harbour, which is chosen by many vessels to lay anchor in , especially during the summer months.

Lakka is accessible by many means of transport, by sea or land, as you can also use the regular bus routes, which run daily from Gaios going around the island and reaching the village of Lakka.

Concerning accommodation, guests can choose between quiet rooms and villas that are scattered inside and outside the village. The restaurants located on this site are also very distinctive since their cuisine mixes the Greek tradition with the Italian influence and the modern way of cooking.

The area near the port, obviously, attracts big tourist crowds during summer, however, the area still offers a very tranquil landscape and amazing scenery.

Even if you do not choose Lakka for your residence on the island, it is definitely worth a visit.

Although Paxos is a fairly small island, if you want to explore the entire island you will definitely need to use some of the means of transportation available:

Buses: There are 3 routes during the day on the island, going around the
island starting from and returning to Gaios. Buses pass by all major villages
of the island and you can use them to reach most places.

Taxi: On the island there are five taxis that you can call and will take you to
every part of the island. However you should be aware that especially in
periods that tourism is in its peak season, it is likely to have to wait for some
time until you find an available taxi.

Rent a car/bike/ATV/boat:

One of the best options for your transportation on the island is to rent your own means of transportation, so you will have the opportunity to go to every part of the island, either by land or by sea at any time of the day you want. On the island there are several such rental agencies which will definitely serve your every need.

Renting a car is a smart choice if you are a family or a group of 4 persons, as it the most economical one. However be aware that there are restrictions on destinations that can be reached, as the rental agencies do not allow access to places where there is no asphalted road, which applies to a large part of the island.

Motorcycles or scooters are an economical solution for up to 2 people and gives you the advantage of crossing through very narrow roads where cars don’t fit through. Bikes also have the added advantage of easy parking anywhere.

The ATVs ( “gourounes”(=pigs) as they are known as in Greece) is also a very good choice because they can access various parts of the island that are difficult to reach by other means of transportation due to the rough condition of some roads (like dirt roads, etc.). They are certainly the most practical solution for 2 people and an experience that you will remember because of their driving behaviour.

To rent a motor vehicle if you are under 21 years old, an additional legal document is required which will be prepared for you at a small extra cost.

The best means of transportation you could rent while on the island which will offer you a completely unique experience, is to rent a boat! This way you can go to different parts of the island that are not accessible by land as well as various beaches in the west side which offer a privacy that you will surely enjoy. At the same time you will be able to explore the myriad caves of Paxos, and of course the island of Antipaxos. If you want to rent a boat, there are boats under 30 hp that you can hire without a skipper’s license, or for larger boats, there are some offices that also offer skipper services if you need to hire one.

Paxos by Boat

On the island there are several boats that you can board and go on their route, going mainly, either directly to Antipaxos, or cruising around the island first. A small cruise worth going on since it includes places that can only be reached by sea, especially on the western part of the island. Trips start early in the morning and there are many to chose from throughout the day until a little before sunset.

At Paxos there are many uniquely beautiful diving spots and many tourists come from many parts of the world to enjoy diving there. There are various underwater attractions such as underwater caves (a favourite object for cave divers), an ancient sunken port and many other marvellous destinations, for more advanced divers.. It is obvious that Paxos is an island which is a must for all lovers of diving!

Fireflies: A Magical phenomenon in Paxos

On the island of Paxos, from late April to early May, you can enjoy a unique natural spectacle : Swarms of fireflies flooding the fields and the olive trees when the night falls.

Fireflies are insects in the beetle order Coleoptera, which have the ability to physically produce light from the back of their body. These strange little insects use light to attract mates.

A walk in the wilderness, away from the city lights will lead you among numerous fireflies ,flying and flashing! Witnessing this spectacular natural phenomenon up close is something unique. Thousands of tiny lights can give you the impression that you are literally walking among the stars

To take a good picture of the fireflies you will need to go to the place you have chosen with the proper equipment (a tripod, a lens, a camera with a shutter etc.) It’s best if you go before dusk to have time to prepare while there’s still daylight. Once the sun sets the fireflies will appear and … pose for you, giving you not only pictures of rare beauty but also a wonderful experience under the night sky of Paxos.

Gaios – The central port of Paxos

The main tradition requires Gaios to have its name by Apostle Paul (Gaios), who actually teached Christianity on the island. This unique amazing and also traditional village stands out as the island’s prime city and also the major harbour of Paxos. Paxos Island – General Information

Paxos the smallest island of Eftanison. Located approximately 7 nautical miles from the southern part of Corfu, it is respectively 12 miles from the port of Parga. It is considered one of the most cosmopolitan islands in Greece, since each year it attracts thousands of tourists from every part of the globe. Because of its geomorphology it has been described as the ideal destination for yachts and boats.

The complex of Paxos consists by beautiful islets and islands. The two largest are the Paxos with an area of 29 square kilometers. Antipaxoi are an exotic area of 3 square km. This small island is located 3 nautical miles the main port of Paxos Gaios.

According to the mythology, the king of the 7 seas, god Poseidon detached the southern part of Corfu striking it with his trident, resulting in the formation of Paxos. So he created a love nest, remote from humans and gods, to him and his mistress, the Niriida Amphitrite. This is why the island is symbolized by the trident between two dolphins in turn to symbolize the strong marine fauna thatsurrounds Paxos. This natural beauty and attractions, are the elements that make them unique Paxos.

Gaios is the island’s capital, is one of the most beautiful harbors in Greece.
