I find myself, by default, wanting to respond in anger when I am faced with anger and wanting to respond to kindness with kindness. It is easy for me to react in the same manner in which I am approached. I would like to be a more proactive person than reactive, so it is good for me to acknowledge this and be aware of it in the moment when I am faced with angry words.

I do not believe that being gay is a choice. I certainly never chose to be gay. But, whether it is or not should have no impact on anything whatsoever. If gay people choose to be gay, they should be allowed to make that choice, just like Mormons choose to be Mormons or chocolate lovers choose to eat chocolate.

I've always had sympathy for people who have been disowned by family--whether it's because they changed religions or because they came out of the closet or married the wrong person or whatever. But, I've never really known what it felt like until now. I consider myself lucky that I went nearly a year after coming out before I got this kind of message, but I did get an email the other day from someone telling me never to talk to him again. It hurts, and I want to empathize with those who have been in similar situations or have anxiety about such a thing happening in the future.
