Tigers Woods had the worst performance of his entire career at the Bridgestone last year, when he shot 18 over and finished tied for 78th. Woods, despite his prowess, is not expected to be a contender this year, but could make waves in his return by finishing in the top 20.

The Players Championship (often styled as THE PLAYERS Championship) is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour.

Originally known as the Tournament Players Championship, the inaugural event in 1974 was played at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia before moving to the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975 and Inverrary Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1976. Beginning in 1977, the event relocated to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, first being played at Sawgrass Country Club’s Oceanside Course (a combination of the “East” and “West” 9-hole courses). Since 1982 it has been played across the road from Sawgrass Country Club, on the Stadium Course at the “Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass” (usually referred to as the TPC at Sawgrass). It is not uncommon for “TPC” in this context to be conflated with “The Players Championship” because they happen to have the same initials – in fact, this confusion was the reason why the tournament’s original name was shortened to just “Players Championship” prior to the 1988 event, although some confusion between the two still persists occasionally.

The Players Championship offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf ($8 million 2004–06, $9 million in 2007, $9.5 million in 2008), and is sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Major”, but it does not have official major status. The field usually includes the top 50 golfers in the world rankings, but unlike the three majors which are staged in the United States, it does not count as an official event on the European Tour. The winner receives a fixed allocation of 80 points towards his Official World Golf Ranking, which is the most allocated to any event apart from the majors, in which winners earn 100 points. For comparison, the winners of the three individual World Golf Championships held during the PGA Tour regular season generally receive between 70 and 78 points. The Players Championship also receives a 5-year exemption on the PGA Tour, a three-year invitation to the Masters Tournament, three-year exemptions for The Open Championship and for the U.S. Open, and an exemption to the PGA Championship for that year.

The European Tour of Golf is Europes tournament besides the US PGA tour.

The Africa Open is a golf tournament on the Sunshine Tour that was first contested in February 2008, over the Gary Player designed championship course at the Fish River Sun Country Club, near Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

In order to increase the profile of the tournament, since 2009 it has been held in January at the East London Golf Club in East London. In 2009, the Africa Open had a prize fund of R5 million, over four times that of the inaugural event. The Sunshine Tour hoped that it would attract a stronger field as a result, and possibly lead to a co-sanctioning agreement with the European Tour in subsequent years.

In October 2009, it was announced that the Africa Open would be included on the 2010 European Tour schedule. It was the third event of the four tournament South African swing of the tour, held after the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the South African Open, and the week before the Joburg Open. The purse for 2011 was €1,000,000.

Since 2007, it has been the final event of the FedEx Cup, the competition for the first official championship trophy for the PGA Tour season. From 1987 to 1996, several courses hosted the event. Beginning in 1997, the event alternated between Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas and East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia; since 2004, East Lake has been the event's permanent home. The Wyndham Championship is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in Greensboro, North Carolina, U.S. and was originally called the Greater Greensboro Open. In 2007, the event was renamed the Wyndham Championship when Wyndham Hotels & Resorts took over from DaimlerChrysler as main sponsor. It moved from an autumn date to mid-August and is the last PGA Tour event before the Playoffs for the FedEx Cup.

The 2009 purse was $5,100,000, with $918,000 going to the winner. The tournament was founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open. This tournament was usually contested in April or May, until a schedule change in 2003 which moved the tournament toward the end of the season. Sam Snead set a PGA Tour record for his 8 wins at the event, as well as his 1965 event, which made him the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event (both records still stand).

The event has been played in Greensboro for its entire history. In its first 4 years, it was played at both Sedgefield Country Club and Starmount Forest Country Club, and shifted to solely Starmount Forest CC in 1942 and for the first time it was played after World War II in 1945. Starting with that 1945 event, it alternated between Starmount Forest CC and Sedgefield CC until 1952, when Starmount Forest CC hosted for a 2nd year in a row. It returned to Sedgefield CC in 1953 before Starmount Forest CC hosted 3 consecutive years (through 1956). Sedgefield CC hosted in 1957 before Starmount Forest CC hosted another 3 straight 1958-60. From 1961 to 1976, it was played at Sedgefield CC. From 1977 to 2007, Forest Oaks Country Club hosted the event. In 2008, the tournament returned to Sedgefield CC.

In 2001, Mark Brazil was hired as the new Tournament Director. Brazil previously spent years working at the American Junior Golf Association

The PGA Championship (sometimes referred to as the U.S. PGA Championship outside of the United States) is an annual golf tournament conducted by the PGA of America as part of the PGA Tour. It is one of the four major championships in professional golf, and it is the golf season's final major, usually played in mid-August (customarily four weeks after The Open Championship, but it was advanced a week in 2007 and 2008 because of local scheduling conflicts). Due to its distinction as the season's final major, the PGA Championship is nicknamed "Glory's last shot". It is an official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour, with a purse of $7.5 million in 2008.In line with the other majors, winning "The PGA" gives a golfer several privileges which make his career much more secure, if he is not already one of the elite players of the sport. PGA champions are automatically invited to play in the other three majors (Masters, U.S. Open, and the Open Championship) for the next five years, and are exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship for life. They also receive membership on the PGA Tour for the following five seasons and invitations to The Players Championship for five years.The PGA Championship has been held at a large number of venues, some of the early ones now quite obscure, but currently it is usually staged by one of a small group of celebrated courses, each of which has also hosted several other leading events.

The Turning Stone Resort Championship is a PGA Tour professional golf tournament. It was played for the first time September 20-23, 2007. It is hosted by the Atunyote Golf Club at Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona in Upstate New York. In 2007, it was the first of the seven Fall Series events played after the conclusion of the FedEx Cup, which was also introduced the same year. The prize fund was $6 million. The tournament's timing in the PGA Tour calendar changed in 2008. The 2008 Fall Series began before the conclusion of the FedEx Cup with the Viking Classic. After the Fall Series took a week off for The Tour Championship, it resumed with the Turning Stone Championship. In 2009, the Turning Stone Resort Championship was played the week after The Tour Championship. In 2010, the event will move to August and become part of the main PGA Tour season, although it will be an "alternate" event scheduled opposite a World Golf Championships tournament, specifically the Bridgestone Invitational.

The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is one of the annual World Golf Championships for male professional golfers. It is sanctioned and organized by the International Federation of PGA Tours and the prize money is official money on both the PGA Tour and the PGA European Tour. The event, sponsored by NEC through 2005 and known as the WGC-NEC Invitational, was established in 1999 as a successor to the World Series of Golf, which was also sponsored by NEC.The tournament changed sponsorship in 2006, with Bridgestone taking over from NEC as title sponsor. As a part of the original five-year sponsorship agreement, the event continues to be held at its traditional site of the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio; the sponsorship has now been extended to 2014
