With three napkins filled with the scrawls of locations and weather predictions strewn around her, MaryBeth announced the next likely location for the workshop. Copper Harbor! A discussion and a decision later. We were heading West! MaryBeth had woken up early that morning to find us an opening in the skies so we had a better chance of seeing the Aurora should the conditions arise. The evidence of her hours of meticulously checking multiple weather models & predictions filled the napkins with data written in a legibility only MaryBeth was capable of reading. As she gathered her nearly falling apart napkins she laughed to herself and commented aloud, "See what I mean about rather being a crack addict than an aurora chaser?" Implying that it might be even less crazy to be on crack than participate in the chase she loves best. Aurora Season has begun and we are in a Solar Minimum. Which means we are in the valley heading back up to the mountain peak. The roller coaster that is the Aurora has an 11-year cycle as it goes up to the MAX and then down to the MIN and right now we are excitedly transitioning away from the min and heading towards the max again! During a Solar Minimum, Aurora Photographers pay close attention to when Coronal Holes open up on the sun and can plan on consistent Aurora activity while the coronal holes are pointing at us. Enrico Fossati | Landscape Photography Tips in Italy & Getting Inspired by Painters | Ep 119

Today we are joined by Enrico Fossati all the way from Italia! A land I have a true love for and feel myself longing to return all the time! In this episode we are also joined by my father acting as my co-host who also helps me with any Italian translation. We begin the episode hearing Enrico's bucket list locations and to no surprise he ALSO can't wait until he can get out to New Zealand! A bucket list location for seemingly ALL photographers! :D Enrico recommends to us the Val d'Aosta area of the Italian and French Alps for a location that we all add to OUR bucket lists if we are interested in a dynamic, more wild version of the Dolomites in Italy. And he describes many locations in Italy that we all should practice our hand at landscape photography on even though they can be certainly over photographed by all tourists who go there. In the second half of this shorter episode, Enrico shares with us a story of a crazy weather day that he must seek refuge from the thunder and lightning and finds himself in a position to capture his most famous image. A shot inspired by his love of the Lord of the Rings city of Rivendell. Throughout the podcast, Enrico recommends to us two artists that inspire his work: John Howe who did the Conceptual Design for Lord of the Rings. You can see some of his work here. And Albert Bierstadt who is famous for paintings of famous landscapes from the United States. His final recommendation to us, is to know the area and learn the times when the light is best. Not everywhere is "best" to capture around sunrise or sunset so that can't be an automatic thought as a Landscape Photographer. You need to come back often and experience the area. If you are in a location you don't have more than a day or two there come early so you have 6+ hours to experience the area and you might just find that the harsher mid-day light is the best light for that landscape and offers you wondrous opportunities to create a composition you will never forget! The extremely concerning situation has forced Brendon to back out of Photog Adventures and he may never be able to come back. Funny things he has said, funny stories we shared about him, funny mistakes that he made and I end with his advice for all of us taken from three years of "What did you learn in..." episodes. Brilliant Portfolio Leading Milky Way at Island in the Sky in Canyonlands National Park | Ep 130

Brendon and Aaron finally get a chance to get back out there with their cameras and celebrate 3-years of doing Milky Way Photography on a 4-Night Trip that of course…didn’t entirely go to plan. Beginning this trip with a cancellation as clouds ruined our chances of getting a Milky Way out at Royce Bair Milky Way Butte, we are forced to make a 5-hour detour drive to Richfield, Utah for a print that was as tall as Aaron! This print was a gift to Canyon Country Lodge out in Escalante and it was huge! Barely fit in the pickup we rented! Knowing time is precious, we take off from Escalante that same night and begin the trek to Moab with only one stop off at an amazing Martian-like landscape. The area is one we have been many times before but we did NOT know about this spot to capture from. We have actually passed the road that leads to it several times and missed out on many opportunities for a great image! Having used our skills in Google Earth scouting and matching terrain from an image up with terrain we are familiar with we discovered its location and worked to get our first image out there. The drive through the night was going to be worth it! We hoped. After sharing a nightmare sleeping condition story, we spend the rest of the podcast on being in Moab and our amazing morning at Island in the sky. Classic what went well and what could have been better, we break down the successes and failures are Island in the Sky and Aaron shares that he may have just captured his second or first best image of all time! As far as Milky Way Photography goes, this image might be his best depending on who you ask. Aaron has his favorite but this new shot is easily his second. It’s amazing how we can capture an amazing portfolio image and not even recognize it until you post-process it! We also go into the merits of extremely long exposures to bring in your landscape foreground. When you hear advice from Royce Bair and Wayne Pinkston, who both have amazing bodies of work in Milky Way Photography, you want to copy them anyway you can to get your own great images. But to this point, I was not doing long exposures for the foreground despite seeing it in their photography and hearing it here on the podcast. But in this circumstance - Island in the Sky - a nice long exposure bringing out all the foreground detail was benefit instead of a way to light up distractions in your composition. Long exposed foregrounds is NOT something you should do in every Milky Way Image. So we talk about our recommendations on when it IS going to work for you. For the first time, Brendon has taken Photog Adventures through the Slot Canyons in Escalante. Drew and Brendon hit up Spooky Gulch and Peek-a-Boo Slot. Sharing first impressions of the drive there and the challenges of hiking the area and how they definitely brought too much gear along with them on the hikes. They make Aaron jealous as they describe the many arches down there and a spot that would be just amazing for a vertical Milky Way that we definitely have to do before the season is over! Then after all the waxing poetic and romantic about the amazement of the experience, they describe a harrowing experience where a mother and two little kids frantically approaches them as they are leaving the canyon. This mother split up from her parents and daughter trying to find a way out of the canyon with her two little kids but now the parents and daughter have not made it up yet! It had been three hours since they ran out of water and this woman was scared for the real possibility of losing her family to the elements! Between Drew's Drone and the experience of Mountain Goat Hartely, the guys are able to locate the missing half of the family and give Hartley the exact position to go find this family to rescue them and help them out safely. Astro Photog Ep 7 | Introduction to Photographing the Perseid Meteor Shower

Happy Perseids everybody! It is the week of the peak of the annual Perseid Meteor shower. This coming Aug. 11th. 12th and 13th mark the three mornings that will showcase the peak of the Perseids with as many as 50 meteors an hour often more! So how do you get the most out of this opportunity? Today on the Astro Photog Podcast, Aaron goes over advice for those WITH and WITHOUT plans to photograph the meteor shower then ends with a new segment Geek Time in honor of Brendon's Gear Time. In the Astro Primer I give the news most of you already know, it is New Moon week and with that comes great nights EVERY night. The Northern Hemisphere has a vertical Milky Way from the moment full darkness starts up until the Galactic Core sets on you early in the morning. The core sets LONG before the Astronomical Twilight period begins so plan on going out at the beginning of the night. The Southern Hemisphere night begins with the Core high in the sky and then moves into a better position for photography come early morning before the Galactic Core sets beyond the horizon around 4am Perth, Australia time. The highlight of the Astro Primer is the main subject of today's podcast, the Perseid Meteor Shower! One of the year's BEST Meteor Showers is appearing without the moon again and is set to make 2018 a magical time for Meteor Shower photography! The podcast begins with general Meteor viewing tips as given from the EarthSky.org article linked below. The tips are: 1- Find a dark, open sky with as little obstructions that you can get so you can see all the many meteors across the sky 2- Give yourself at least an hour of observing time to see a lot and most importantly, get your eyes adjusted to the darkness of night 3- Know that all meteors all come from a single point in the sky, the radiant 4- Bring a reclining chair and some warm drink of your choice to fully enjoy in massive comfort 5- Be patient! All good things come to those that wait! Oregon Milky Way Chase | Bandon, Thor's Well, Heceta Head, and Crater Lake | Ep 84

We travel to Oregon and continue the #TheGreatMilkyWayChase. Follow us as we shoot the Milky Way and visit Bandon, Thor’s Well, Cook’s Chasm, the Sprouting Horn, Heceta Head Lighthouse, and Crater Lake National Park. Along for this Photog Adventure was Claudia Halbert and Kirk Keyes. We discuss what a great spot Bandon is for both the sunset and the Milky Way, why Thor’s Well is probably not a great place for the Milky Way, shooting lighthouses at night, and why Crater Lake National Park is one of the best places ever for night photography. Aaron had a rant about the situation of buying gasoline in the State of Oregon. Since you can’t pump your own gas in most of Oregon, you can only refuel during the hours that the gas station is open. On the Interstates and in larger towns, stations can be open 24 hours. But in smaller towns, they will close overnight. And once they close, the station attendant goes home and they turn off the pumps. So, plan that when you come to Oregon to keep your tank full! It’s a several hour long drive to get to Crater Lake from the Mid or South Oregon Coast. It’s an unbelievable place and well worth the trip. Crater Lake is nearly 2000 ft. deep and has some of the purest water in the world. The color of the lake is an amazing shade of blue. #TheGreatMilkyWayChase | Awesome Salt Flats Reflection Selfie & challenges at Red Ledges | Ep 82

In today's episode Aaron and Brendon go back to the Salt Flats for Night 2 and re-discover the Red Ledges area up Price Canyon for Night 5. The Salt Flats in West Utah are just next to the Nevada border, near Wendover. It is a very unique area, super flat surface and when the water puddles up, it can make for some very cool photographs. In Night 2 of the Instagram Milky Way Challenge Brendon & Aaron take the two hour journey out and find the perfect spot to shoot the Milky Way. Join them as they find the perfect balance in capturing the Milky Way with themselves reflecting in the water. Night 5 Aaron & Brendon had plans to shoot the Payson Temple and re-create the shoot Aaron took last year. Well, that plan fell apart as soon as they arrived on location. The Temple had super bright lights installed and the clouds came in and covered the milky way also. So they quickly devised a Plan B and set out towards Price Canyon, less light pollution and maybe, just maybe the high mountains would block some of those clouds. They looked at Photo Pills, and google maps figured there best bet was the Red Ledges area. As luck would have it, the area worked out surprisingly well.

Dan Bailey | Fujifilm Ambassador & True Adventure Aerial Photographer from Plane over Alaska | Ep 81

We hang out with Adventure Photographer and Fujifilm Ambassador Dan Bailey and in an extended 35-minute first segment we get a passionate and convincing argument why we all should be using the Fuji camera system, what he did to become a Fujifilm ambassador, what makes him an "Adventure Photographer" and then end with tales from his adventure out in Scotland at the Shetland Isles riding a bike through the landscape capturing the whole experience with his Fuji camera on his back. In the second segment we find ourselves suffering from envy as we hear the incredible details of what it is like being a pilot and owning your own Cessna Airplane in Alaska and getting to take off in the afternoon and travel the skies like we would travel country roads. Dan explains how amazing it is to fly around the mountain peaks with his Fuji in one hand and the other controlling the plane and getting to control the scene by flying around until he gets the light and angles JUST right. What an amazing thing to hear and what a terrible thing to hear. We spent the rest of the night daydreaming about owning our own plane someday and getting the chance to fly 45-minutes from home to an isolated glacier, land and explore the terrain as easily as we could drive down the street to a park and walk around with our cameras. Insane with jealousy is an understatement. Lastly for Tip of the Week and Gear Time, Dan offers us some great lessons that years of experience has taught him like his method of finding a composition that he calls "Seeing Geometrically" and teaches us how to take advantage of that kind of anticipating the scene to get our best shot possible in action photography. Jeff Pedersen talks Landscape Photography at White Pockets & why you should NOT go there | Ep 79

White Pockets is a unique area of windswept sandstone near Kanab, UT. The sandstone there is not the typical red rock found in most of the Colorado Plateau – it’s not only white, but also yellow, orange, and even purple in places. And there’s Brainrock! It’s an amazingly interesting place for photographers. Jeff finds White Pocket to be more interesting than even another near-by location, The Wave. And White Pocket has many more locations to shoot than The Wave. The roads that access White Pocket consists of deep sand and patches of sharp rock. Four-wheel drive and high clearance are required. Don’t try this road unless you have experience driving under these conditions AND a vehicle that meets these requirements. Don’t try it with a car or even a RAV4-type vehicle. Don’t take a rental vehicle as you will violate your rental agreement. If you get stuck, towing fees will run about $1000 - $2000! THIS IS A DEMANDING ROAD! Jeff recommends not going alone – bring a buddy or two. Go with someone that knows the road or better yet, an authorized guide. It’s at least 2.5 hours for help to get there if you are stuck or have a medical emergency. Aaron got composition paralysis upon arrival, so he took a few shots with his phone, and then found some locations that the got super excited about. Using the wide-angle distortion of his Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 , Aaron used the leading lines of the wind-blown sandstone to frame up a shot. But the clouds were changing fast as sunset approached… Jeff and Aaron are looking forward to bringing Brendon out there someday – it’s going to be like watching a seven-year old opening presents at Christmas time! Update from Episode 78 – We talked in about using the Metabones Speed Booster adaptors for Sony – they are for APS-C cameras, and not full frame. The speed boosting feature is not fully compatible with Sony Full Frame cameras – they are supposed to switch the Sony FF cameras into “APS-C Size Capture”. They should work fine with Sony APS-C cameras. Aaron found his Tamron was giving him color fringing on the edges of the frame. He finds this lens works great for Astro, but he wasn’t happy with some of the photos he took with it at White Pocket. Jeff suggested letting the camera convert the image from RAW to JPG by saving them as RAW+JPG when shooting. The camera conversion process Jeff says, in some cases, can make a JPG that sometimes looks better than the RAW, even when humans do the JPG processing. Jeff recommends bringing Sunpie Emergency Traction Mats They can be used to help your vehicle to get out of mud, sand, or snow. They cost about $70 for a pair on Amazon. For a sandy place like White Pocket, two pair of these might be best. Jeff’s final recommendation - If you go to White Pocket for Milky Way shooting, use lots of light when walking around. It’s easy to turn an ankle there so make sure you can see where you’re walking. To our surprise, we get contacted at the end of last week by a Travel TV Show out of Ukraine! This show is called “Heads and Tails” or in Ukrainian “Орел и Решка” is the number one travel show in Eastern Europe: Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and 11 other countries! Heads and Tails features new travel destinations to their audience and show the most interesting things to do and places to visit. All with a pretty cool premise of flipping a coin at the beginning of each adventure and the winner of the coin toss gets an unlimited budget to do things with while the other only gets around $100! In this episode we recap our first adventure out to Joshua Tree National Park and capturing a Milky Way Panorama over The Eye or Cyclops Rock and the amazing Joshua Trees on our way out to the LA area. With changes to our plans of getting out to the Yosemite Firefall we found ourselves in the area with lots of extra time so we booked a Day Trip out to Santa Cruz Island of the Channel Islands! We get to see pygmy Island Foxes and beautiful birds as they fly around the cliff faces of the Island coastline and enjoy a day out in a location we had no expectations of getting to see this soon! We talk about the challenges of getting your Milky Way low-level lighting right in a location you don't know especially when you get there in the dark and have to work fast with a quickly approaching Milky Way. Then we cover the experience out at the Channel Islands and how to best go about a day trip to Santa Cruz and make the most of your time there. We had a great time on this trip and saw a lot of different landscapes, people, wildlife and enjoyed the adventure with minimal hiccups. In the end of the podcast we talk about an amazing occurrence as we return to the mainland leaving the Channel Islands further and further behind we get to live through one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had in our lives!

Second Part of our Oregon Coast 2017 Listener Adventure and this time we are in Bandon, Shore Acres State Park and at the Heceta Head Lighthouse! This trip had been fantastic but a day of rain moved us from the Brookings area up to Bandon with hope that the skies would clear by sunrise the next day and boy did the skies change! We talk about our working hard to take advantage of the gap in the cloudy skies at Bandon and later on Shore Acres on our way up to Heceta Head Lighthouse. We ended up barely catching a short-lived mostly clouded out sunset from the road at an overlook across the bay from Heceta Head Lighthouse and then hike up to the lighthouse to capture it at night while the lights are shining. It was a stunning adventure from Bandon to Heceta Head and was made even that much better with another day of hanging out with Michael Shainblum and Serena Ho! We go out with Daniel Lindhardt for some late season Milky Way Photography over the Sand Dunes of the Little Sahara here in Utah. Looking forward to enjoying the peace and quiet of cold October temperatures out at the Sand Dunes but instead we find that there are hordes of people out there! We talk about the challenges of lighting the dunes with only one light, staying safe amidst all those Can-Am and ATVs flying all over the place and difficulty with composition over light polluted spots and the 1-hour visible only Milky Way Core. Invited by Larry Petersen from the Pocatello Photo Club to join them at Bryce Canyon National Park for a day, we got the opportunity to capture a beautiful short sunrise at Inspiration Point, a sunset from the top of a mile hiking trail in Losee Canyon and hang out roadside capturing Star Trails over Red Canyon's famous drive through arch on a night of a Full Moon. We discuss the challenges of meeting up with a group we have never met in person in the pre-sunrise pitch black morning, getting a room for a few hours of shut eye mid-day, how we don't remember hikes being as hard as they end up being, seeing the awesome cliffside tree at Losee Trail, more afterglow amazement and then end the day the best way possible with some Astrophotography doing Star Trails in Red Canyon. We share the successes and failures of our photog adventure up Dry Canyon. Hiking almost two hours to get to this amazing view from a rocky outcropping on the side of this Rocky Mountain foothill is such an amazing setting for some fall colors and Landscape Photography. The Sunset was potentially going to be blocked by a thick layer of clouds but optimism and perseverance won the day as the clouds opened up and bathed the magical, colorful landscape in amazing light. We spend Memorial Day Weekend out at the Grand Staircase - Escalante area and experience crazy dust, beautiful clear night skies, terribly annoying washboard dirt roads, actually visible but partial Aurora and get lost walking in a straight path. Astrophotography is usually a challenge, but out at Escalante there are photogenic setting on top of photogenic setting making the only difficulty waiting until the next nightfall so you can start capturing images again. We decided to re-make our original Patreon video by hitting up classic landmarks of Southern Utah in one weekend. Between Friday evening and Saturday evening we hit Goblin Valley State Park, Monument Valley National Park, Natural Bridges National Monument and Balanced Rock up in Arches National Park while getting weathered out of stops at House on Fire Ruins and Goosenecks State Park. Then a few days later we added even more miles and hit the Bonneville Salt Flats to complete the full video. It was a tremendously fast trip with amazing sights! Thanks to a collaboration with ExtremeSpaceAdventures.com we send a GoPro Hero4 Black and a GoPro Session up into the Stratosphere! We really put the adventure into Photog Adventures when the Balloon and its payload housing our GoPros falls off the GPS radar at 10,000 feet up! Brendon and Aaron spend the next three weekends hunting the Mud Flats west of the Great Salt Lake for their GoPros.
