Scientific Experiment meets Fun Experience

A rather large document arrived at our office about 6 weeks ago from a young girl by the name of Kelly Ann Long who lives in South Africa.

Kelly decided to use Water$ave Plug for her science experiment.

She entered the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists competition with her entry titled "The use of an Australian Polymer to prevent water leakage in South African water-holding facilities." (available soon)

Kelly was awarded gold at the Regional Science Expo and then chosen to participate at the National Science Expo,where she was also awarded gold. Kelly also receiving The Water Division Gold Award from SAICE as a special award and from 552 projects was chosen as 1 of 3 students to represent South Africa at the ISWEEEP (International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad) International Science Fair in May 2012 at Texas, USA.

We are truly amazed at the work and effort that Kelly has put into this project and upon receiving a copy of her assignment, we jumped at Kelly's request for help by sponsoring her on this once in a lifetime trip.

Kelly has a mature passion for science which is evident in the extent and quality of her project. Gold medals are a testament to this. We wish Kelly the best of luck at ISWEEEP but clearly she is the type of person to make her own luck.

Know Your Soil Types

Learning as much as you can about your soil will help us in deciding what product best suits your needs.

One of the most basic characteristics of soil is its composition. In general, soils are classified as clay soils. sandy soils, or loam soils.

CLAY is nutrient rich, but slow draining.
SAND is quick draining, but has trouble retaining nutrients and moisture.
LOAM is generally considered to be ideal soil because it retains moisture and nutrients but does not stay soggy.

The Squeeze Test

HOW DO I TELL WHAT MY SOIL TYPE IS?
Good question. Take a handful of moist (not wet) soil and give it a firm squeeze. Then open you hand. One of 3 things will happen:

1. It will hold it's shape, and when you give it a light poke, it will crumble. Lucky You! this is luxurious loam!
2. It will hold it's shape, and when you give it a light poke, it sits stubbornly in your hand. This means you have clay soil
3. It will fall apart as soon as you open your hand. This means you have sandy soil.

Polymer Innovations In Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding is a land reclamation process often used on cleared, steep or damaged land that uses a slurry of seeds, dyes & mulch.

The slurry is transported & applied via a water tank or IBC then sprayed over the ground in a uniform layer to promote the new growth of native plants preventing air pollution, soil erosion & undue water runoff.

A tackifier is an adhesive compound used in hydroseeding (or hydromulching). Acting as a 'glue' it can be a resin based or a polymer based mixture used to increase the 'tack' or stickiness of the hydroseed mulch to be mixed, this may contain water, seeds & fertilisers. This hydromulch 'mix' is then pumped over the area to be treated.

Using PAM tackifiers is one best ways to hydroseed; retaining more moisture in the mulch to keep it in place & prevents messy applications without 'splashing' onto embankments, paths & roadways.

Kirstie Alley donates original signed script cover from final episode of 'Cheers' to help raise funds for Newcastle based charity group.

We approached the Hollywood actress and told her about our support for a relatively new organization called 'Little Wonders'.

Based in the Newcastle area, 'Little Wonders' is a newly formed support group made up of parents dedicated to helping parents and families of premature babies.

We asked Kirstie for her help and support so Kirstie has kindly donated her copy of the original script cover from the very final episode of the long running TV show ‘Cheers’.

This original script cover has been signed the cast members of 'Cheers' & only the cast members were given a few copies, making this a vary rare & valuable collectors item.

We are hoping to capture the interests of 'Cheers' fans & collectors worldwide by putting this up for auction on eBay with all proceeds being donated to 'Little Wonders'.
