A long-awaited Fury vs Joshua bout appeared on course to take in November. However, disagreements over where it takes place has thrown the fight into fresh doubt.

Joshua’s promoter, Hearn claims his contract states the fight must take place in the UK.

Despite this, Saudi organisers and Netflix are pushing for it to be staged in New York at Madison Square Garden.

Fury vs Joshua deadline ticking

The target date for the heavyweight clash is reportedly November 20. Hearn admits time is ticking to settle the ongoing row.

Hearn’s Matchroom have sent an addendum to Sela – the Saudi Arabian entertainment authority – outlining amendments needed to settle the Fury vs Joshua venue debate.

“We’ve sent them our thoughts on changes we would want if the fight was to take place in America,” Hearn told reporters including Pro Boxing Fans on Saturday.

“We don’t want them to make those changes, but it’s been a couple of days now, we haven’t heard back.

“We’ve been told we’re going to receive some comments on that.

“But, don’t forget Netflix are spending a lot of money. They want a big build-up. They want all these press conferences and we have to get in camp.

“This week is probably the deadline for the proposed date.

“I think other people would want to give up. MSG are probably thinking, ‘we’ll book something else.’

“I can’t tell you that [this week is definitely the deadline], because it’s not my show, but yeah I think we’re running out of time.”

Fury blames Hearn and Joshua for delay

Meanwhile, Fury has pinned the blame on Joshua and Hearn.

The two-time heavyweight champion claims the pair are asking for more money.

“Quick update for you. It doesn’t look like they are going to sign the fight.

“And it doesn’t look like it is going to happen all because Eddie Hearn and that want more money,” Fury said in an Instagram video.

“They have already had that much money off [Saudi Arabian boxing chief] Turki [Alalshikh] over the last few years Eddie and AJ. They have had boxing deals, they have had darts deals, they have had snooker deals, they have had everything.

“And yet, they have got the audacity and cheek of flea-bitten rats to ask for more money from old Turki that you have had combined over the last couple of years.”

Teofimo Lopez became a three-weight world champion as he dominated Rolando Romero over 12 rounds.

Romero was beaten in what was the first defence of his world title as Lopez moved up to welterweight.

‘The Takeover’ wasted no time returning to the world-title stage after he was outclassed by Shakur Stevenson in January.

In what was his first fight since losing for just the second time in his career, Lopez was clearly the better man on the night.

Romero fought for the first time in over 15 months after beating Ryan Garcia to claim the WBA world title.

The first round was a cagey one as both men felt each other out, but from the second onwards, ‘The Takeover’ began to take charge.

He was the sharper man throughout the 12 rounds, but more importantly, he was also the more active fighter.

Romero, despite defending his WBA world title, was simply far too passive. He had his moments but was rarely in control of the fight as he was forced onto the back foot by Lopez.

Yoenli Hernandez vs Francisco Daniel Veron

Yoenli Hernandez won a decisive 10-round contest over the dangerous Francisco Veron, who continued to push forward until the very end.

He extended his perfect professional record with an 11th career win as he went the distance for just the second time.

The judges’ scorecards read: 95-95, 98-92 and 99-91 after the 10th and final round, with many surprised by the single even scorecard.

Hernandez showcased plenty of his arsenal over 10 rounds as he outworked and outclassed Veron with relative ease.

Despite the danger Hernandez posed, Veron deserves plenty of credit for pushing forward throughout. He enjoyed some success in round five as he stunned Hernandez with a sharp check hook that sent the favourite into the ropes.

‘El Diablo’ got back to business in the sixth round and began having success with flurries and combinations that continued to push his points tally further away from Veron.

There is a real argument for Hernandez to be in the world-title mix at middleweight despite being just 11 fights into his professional career.

Gary Antonio Russell vs Victor Santillan

Gary Antonio Russell cruised his way to becoming WBA interim super-bantamweight champion as he beat Victor Santillan over 12 rounds.

Through three rounds, Santillan was brave and willing to go power-for-power with Russell after plenty of clinching in the opening stages.

Russell began to find a pattern of success with his right hand. Through six rounds, he took complete control, putting together some nice combinations and continuing to smother Santillan on the inside.

Russell was the sharper, more accurate fighter throughout the bout in what was really one-way traffic. Santillan seemed out of his depth against a fighter who was operating on another level.

The 33-year-old dropped Santillan in the first exchange of the final round, swaying the cards even further in his favour, with all three judges scoring the bout 118-109.

Remaining Undercard

Carlos Utria and Israel Mercado went to war over 10 rounds at super-lightweight, with Utria scoring a controversial split-decision victory.

Over the distance, it was a back-and-forth affair with both men having success. To many, however, Mercado began to pull away towards the latter stages.

In the second half of the fight, Utria began to slow and his straight right seemed to become less of a threat.

Through rounds nine and 10, Mercado was clearly the sharper and stronger man, but he seemingly hadn’t done enough prior, with the cards eventually favouring Utria. The scores read 96-94, 94-96 and 97-93.

Marco Romero wasted no time against Kahlil Mitchell, picking up a first-round stoppage at middleweight.

Benjamin Johnson and Joseph Brown both picked up their eighth professional wins in their respective bouts, with both men winning over six rounds.

To kick off the card, Aldo Blancas had his third professional outing and made no mistake against Ricky Mamone, winning over four rounds.

Liddard dropped Morello in the eighth round and his corner pulled out the bloodied Italian at the end of the session, to crown Liddard the European middleweight champion.

The Essex native played the aggressor in the opening round, while Morello boxed from his tricky southpaw stance. Liddard was connecting to head and body in some fierce exchanges, but the Italian kept him honest with some strong body shots of his own.

Liddard staggered Morello onto the ropes with a right hand, early on in the second round. The 33-year-old appeared to lose his footing momentarily. However, he recovered and stumbled Liddard back himself, although the 24-year-old argued it was caused by a clash of heads.

The home favourite reined in a series of spiteful body shots in the fourth. Morello attempted to connect with something notable of his own, but was made to miss wildly.

Liddard forced Morello to ship successive combinations by round five, as he hunted the stoppage.

The pair traded frantically in some wild exchanges in round seven, but Morello came out the worst of it, with blood streaming down his right cheek.

The ringside doctor checked Morello in the eighth round, as blood continued to pour down his right eye. However, the referee allowed the bout to continue.

Liddard pounced on Morello and floored him with a series of punishing blows. The Italian, however rose to his feet and stood firm amid a follow-up onslaught to make it through the round.

But, his race was run and his corner spared him from any more punishment, calling off the contest before the start of the ninth round.

Liddard called out WBO middleweight world champion, Denzel Bentley.

“He’s got a world title, he can get it,” Liddard said.

Buttigieg-Gordon held to draw

The English middleweight title remained vacant. Leli Buttigieg and PA Gordon fought to a stalemate after 10 entertaining rounds.

Gordon registered an early lead, working well on his backfoot. However, Buttigieg, cut down the right side of his face, connected with the heavier blows in the middle rounds.

Gordon came on strong in the final two rounds and the pair waited with baited breath, as the bout went to the scorecards.

One judge awarded Gordon a 97-93 score, which a second judge’s 96-94 score for Buttigieg cancelled out. A final card of 95-95 saw the bout scored a split draw and meant the belt remained vacant.

There could be calls for a rematch after a pulsating battle.

Sains survives scare to win Commonwealth

Jimmy Sains won the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title, but had to survive a scare.

A body shot rocked Sains in the sixth round, but the Romford man rallied and ran out a deserved winner. Scores of 119-109×2 and 118-110 crowned Sains the new Commonwealth champion.

Liddard vs Morello Results – Remaining Undercard

The Commonwealth featherweight title went the way of Tiah Mai Ayton. Ellie Hellewell retired on her stool before the start of the seventh round after six one-sided rounds.

Serrano (50-4-1, 32 KOs) came into this one having won two fights. Her only recent loss was a thriller to Katie Taylor in New York last July in their trilogy meeting. She was looking to break Christy Martin’s knockout record, meanwhile Argentina’s Manzur (14-5, 7 KOs) was unheralded, and challenging for world honours for the first time.

The first three rounds of this one were closely fought, and Manzur was growing in confidence with every passing session. The Argentine couldn’t miss with her right hand.

The visitor piled on the pressure in the fourth, and although both were landing, it was Manzur that was getting the better of the action. At this stage, the Serrano vs Manzur result looked to be heading the challenger’s way. 

Serrano went to the body in the sixth, and she began to use her experience. Combination punches were landing in round seven, meanwhile flush shots found the mark a round later.

Serrano closed like the champion she is, clearly winning the last two rounds in dominant fashion. The Serrano vs Manzur result however, looked up for grabs, as the scores were announced.

Avious Griffin (20-1, 19 KOs) forced Jackson Marinez (23-5, 11 KOs) to retire after five rounds of their welterweight clash.

Elsewhere on the Serrano vs Manzur results card, Iyana Verduzco (8-0, 1 KO) took a split decision win at featherweight. She defeated Miguelina Hernandez (4-1, 3 KOs). Brook Sibrian (10-3, 4 KOs) took the unbeaten record of Lupita Medina (12-1, 3 KOs). It was a clear points win at minimumweight.

Fury and Joshua have signed contracts to fight each other. But disagreements rumble on over where the long-overdue heavyweight battle take place. Hearn and ‘AJ’ pushing for it to be in the UK.

Meanwhile, organisers from Sela – the Saudi Arabian entertainment authority – and streaming giant Netflix want to hold it elsewhere. They are pushing to hold the Fury vs Joshua at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Hearn sent an addendum to Sela this week, setting out demands tied to switching the bout to the USA. He claims Joshua’s contract states the bout must take place in the UK.

However, Fury says Hearn is asking for more money and as such, is now doubtful the fight materialises.

“Quick update for you. It doesn’t look like they are going to sign the fight and it doesn’t look like it is going to happen all because Eddie Hearn and that want more money,” Fury said in an Instagram video.

“They have already had that much money off [Saudi Arabian boxing chief] Turki [Alalshikh] over the last few years Eddie and AJ. They have had boxing deals, they have had darts deals, they have had snooker deals, they have had everything.

“And yet, they have got the audacity and cheek of flea-bitten rats to ask for more money from old Turki that you have had combined over the last couple of years.”

Fury vs Joshua fight: Hearn denies addendum demands

Hearn denied a report in Boxing Scene on Thursday. The report claimed that Matchroom requested a list of demands.

• Immediately pay Matchroom all monies owed across future darts and snooker events.
• International promotional fees plus deposits for World Series of Darts and 167 Riyadh Season events.
• Formally confirm the Ronnie O’Sullivan Academy license for a third year. Also, pay those future invoices now
• Pay Matchroom all outstanding funds from prior boxing events.

However, Hearn did confirm that meetings have taken place with Sela over in recent days over money owed. But he insisted this was unrelated to the actual Fury vs Joshua addendum.

“We have sent a list of all the things that must be done if you want to change the contract,” he said to IFLTV.

“An increased payment to cover the tax deficit change of taking a fight from the UK to America.

Organisers are keen to stage the long-awaited Fury vs Joshua bout at Madison Square Garden in New York. However, Eddie Hearn remains keen for it to land in the UK. That said an addendum has now been issued.

Hearn, who has promoted Joshua since his professional debut, says he has a signed contract for the fight to take place in the UK. Additionally, the Matchroom Chairman has now sent over fresh terms. If organisers agree to these additional terms, the bout will likely head to New York.

Hearn said to IFLTV: “There has been an addendum sent to the Saudis, SELA. Basically say if you want to do this fight in America, these are all the things we would like to clarify and clear up.

“The addendum are the changes to be made to the contract.”

He explained the addendum simply lists the changes Matchroom wants to make to the contract.

However, Hearn quashed a report in Boxing Scene on Thursday. The report suggested the Fury vs Joshua addendum contained a list of demands.

However, he did confirm that separate meetings did take place with SELA over money owed. But he stressed this was unrelated to the actual Fury vs Joshua addendum.

“None of those points are in the addendum,” Hearn said.

Hearn clarified that Matchroom simply wants payment for contracts it already signed.

While the Fury vs Joshua addendum focuses on venue terms, Hearn separately confirmed the undercard fighters Matchroom hopes to see on the card. Specifically, they’ve asked for three fights on the undercard.

For Lopez, a second straight defeat would be disastrous. It’s the 29-year-old’s first fight at 147 pounds. Despite being a two-weight world champion, question marks over whether Lopez would have fulfilled his undeniable potential will continue to swirl.

Lopez’s father and trainer, Teofimo Lopez Sr came under fire for his game plan or lack of against Stevenson. Another below-par performance will only heighten those doubts.

As always, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom promote Liddard vs Morello and Sains vs Cowling broadcast live on DAZN.

Currently undefeated in 14 professional fights, Liddard is closing in on a maiden world title shot. Indeed, he’s ranked at six with the IBF behind recently-crowned champion, Aaron McKenna.

That said, the 24-year-old most recently retained his British and Commonwealth middleweight titles in March, with a hard-fought points victory over Tyler Denny.

Now he tackles Italy’s Morello, who only has one defeat on his record to Luther Clay in 2019.

The 33-year-old is on a run of 11 straight victories since, but has been dropped in his last two outings.

Despite this, Morello climbed off the canvas to outpoint Faton Vukshinaj in November, securing the vacant EBU Silver middleweight strap.

Prediction: Given his form, Liddard should overcome Morello by decision.

Sains faces Cowling for Commonwealth belt

The undercard supporting George Liddard vs Dario Morello also features a strong night of action.

Jimmy Sains goes for the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title, which was relinquished by Liddard. Meanwhile, Tom Cowling stands in his way in the chief support bout on the Liddard vs Morello bill.

Previously, Sains retained his English middleweight crown, edging past Derrick Osaze by majority decision in March.

Similarly, Cowling climbed off the deck to stun Aaron Bowen and take the vacant Midlands Area middleweight belt in November.

Prediction: Given the gulf in class, Sains vs Cowling should be one-sided, with Sains stopping his Midlands-based opponent inside the distance.

Buttigieg vies for English title

Sains vacated the English title after his victory over Osaze. Now, Leli Buttigieg looks to profit on the Liddard vs Morello undercard when he tackles Paul Gordon.

Prediction: As both men are unbeaten, Buttigieg may need the full distance to see off Gordon.

“Although, I did pick Ryan to beat rolly, but I got more faith in Teo tbh!”

Romero and Stevenson have gone back-and-forth over the years, but are yet to share the ring with each other. Romero appeared to ignite their war of words this week, questioning the four-weight world champion’s resume.

Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown has confirmed organisers are unlikely to stage Joshua vs Fury in the UK, meanwhile, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn claims they’ve signed a contract to stage it in the UK.

“We’re very, very close,” Brown told The Stomping Ground.

“We’ve tried all we can to get it on in England, we’ve gone through figures, we’ve gone through everything really, we’ve asked the government to help us. We’ve just hit a wall I think.

“It looks like it’s very, very close to going to America.”

Fury vs Joshua: Why Is Not In The UK

However, Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi Arabian boxing chief who is bankrolling the event, said staging the Joshua vs Fury bout there would need a 2am start time.

Organisers claim they’ve spoken to the government, but to no avail.

Netflix will stream the showdown. The streaming giant are reportedly pushing for the fight to take place to suit a US audience.

“We’re all desperate for it to happen int he UK,” Brown added.

“But 4 o’clock in the morning on a very wintery night in November is going to be very hard.

“No roof. Why they don’t build stadiums here with roofs on anymore I’m not too sure.

“Is it dead in the water? Probably at this moment.”

On Tuesday, The Daily Mail reported that organisers had signed contracts for the fight. This would see it take place at MSG on November 20, but Hearn was quick to deny this.

This report came just hours after Fury hinted on social media that the bout would be announced imminently.

According to Hearn, there is currently no agreement for Fury vs Joshua to take place in the US.

“Right now there is absolutely no agreement to change the contract we signed,” Hearn told About Boxing on the Fury vs Joshua venue.

“From our side, no announcement is imminent; everything has to be locked down if they want to do this.”

Garcia vs Benn takes place on September 12 in Las Vegas. He has now eluded to replicating a move made by Eubank Jr.

Eubank Jr and Benn shared a bitter rivalry over two fights last year. The former won their first bout by unanimous decision, however Benn gained revenge by the same margin seven months later.

The Eubank Jr egg incident

Prior to their first meeting, tempers spilled over between the pair at a press conference. Eubank Jr slapped his rival with an egg. Benn’s failed drugs test shelved their original meeting during fight week in 2022 and Garcia’s jibe references it.

At the time, the WBC cleared the 29-year-old. Its ruling stated that a “highly-elevated consumption of eggs” was a reasonable explanation for him testing positive. ‘The Destroyer’ rejected that explanation at the time.

Garcia and Benn almost brawled at a press conference in New York last month. As a result the champion says he may recreate the scene which saw Eubank Jr fined £100,000.

“I’m just gonna hit Benn with an egg, if all gets to worst,” the 28-year-old said during a Kick stream.

“If worst comes to worst, we’re just smacking him with an egg.

“We’re gonna grab an egg and smack him – Eubank style.”

The Californian will make a first defence of the belt he secured with a unanimous decision win over Mario Barrios in February.

It was third time lucky for ‘King Ry’. A failed drugs test cost him his world title win, following his victory over Devin Haney.

Garcia’s own history with failed tests adds an awkward edge to his Garcia-Benn jibe.

Since then, The New York State Athletic Commission handed Garcia a one-year suspension. On his return, he was handily beaten by WBA welterweight champion, Rolly Romero.

Meanwhile, Benn fights for the first time at 147 pounds in over four years. Benn’s contested his unanimous decision win over Regis Prograis in April at a 150 pound catchweight. That result set up a blockbuster Garcia vs Benn showdown in Sin City – one where the Garcia Benn egg subplot may end up stealing headlines of its own.

Whether the Garcia Benn egg threat becomes reality remains to be seen. We don’t know if it’ll happen until the pair finally meet in the ring.
