When I reflect back, I see a young boy living in a small town in India at age 6 and then working his way to the city [...]]]> I would like to thank all those who nominated me for Australian of the Year 2012. I have felt stunned , humbled and honoured by this nomination.
When I reflect back, I see a young boy living in a small town in India at age 6 and then working his way to the city of Poona to join medicine and then working his way to the UK to become a consultant and then heading straight to North Queensland – a place that has been very good to me and helped me flourish.
What with setting up a brand new urogynaecology service to setting up a farm growing chillies, lychees and Alphonso mangoes to making a Bollywood film ‘RIWAYAT’ against female infanticide and foeticide to helping set up the Paula Rane Fistula Ward in Chennai, India – it continues to be a great journey.
I feel very blessed that I have had these opportunities.
The papers reported that I felt I hadn’t done enough to win this award – that is not what I meant – I suggested that a person should just not be judged ONLY by the work they do as a job but what they do over and above it too.

How then can we get the same health benefits of a full squat without doing a full squat? without destroying our existing toilets? Our research shows that it is possible to increase passive intra abdominal pressure, relax the pelvic muscles completely and align the angle between the rectum and the anus without necessarily doing dangerous things like perching up on a western toilet!
