There is an old expression we humans use with enormous confidence:

“As time passes by…”

No.

I don’t think it does.

I think we’ve got it completely backwards.

Time doesn’t Pass us by.

We Pass through Time.

There is a difference.

Perhaps it’s an enormous one.

We speak about Time as though it were some enormous celestial train hurtling past the platform while we stand still waving our handkerchiefs.

Time marches on.

Time flies.

Time waits for no man.

Time heals.

Time catches up with us.

Time runs out.

Time passes.

Poor, Old Time.

We’ve given it an astonishing number of responsibilities for something that may not actually be doing anything at all.

Perhaps Time is simply THERE.

Perhaps WE are the things moving.

Imagine, for a moment, that Time isn’t a River.

Imagine it is a BOOK.

Not an ordinary book.

There would be no cover.

No title page.

No copyright notice.

No irritating introduction by somebody explaining what you’re about to read when you’d rather just get on with reading it.

There is no first page.

There is no final page.

It simply exists.

An Infinite book.

Every event that has ever happened occupying its place somewhere within it.

Every Star Being Born.

Every, Civilization Rising.

Every, Civilization Collapsing.

Every First Kiss.

Every Last Breath.

Every war.

Every Old Person Remembering.

Sunlight through curtains.

Someone holding your hand.

Your First Little Memories begin Appearing like Photographs Scattered across a Table.

Gradually You Realise:

I am here.

But where is "HERE?"

What exactly is an "I" ?

Nobody Knows.

Human Beings have spent thousands of years trying to answer those Two Questions.

Despite libraries full of Philosophy, Religion, Science, we’re still arguing.

Which is Rather Charming.

We’re Tiny Creatures.

Standing on a Rock Spinning through Space. Confidently debating the Fundamental Nature of Existence, while frequently being unable to remember where we put our Spectacles.

Perhaps humility wouldn’t hurt.

Because each of us appear to have been given Something Astonishing.

Not Somebody Else’s Page.

YOURS.

Unique.

Completely Unique.

Like a Snowflake.

We use that comparison rather casually, but consider what it means.

A snowflake forms under conditions that will never precisely occur again.

Its Structure belongs to one moment.

It Falls.

It Exists Briefly.

Human Life Isn’t Entirely Different.

There Has Never Been Another You!!!

is a Predetermined Structure?

There may be Spiritual Realities

We haven’t Discovered.

There, May Not.

The Mystery Remains.

But One Thing is Undeniable.

When Someone Dies.

Their Influence Doesn’t Simply Vanish.

Their Page has Touched Others.

Their Words Remain in Memories.

Their Kindness changes Behaviour.

Their Cruelty can Too.

Their Children carry Genes, Stories & Habits.

Their Work may Survive.

Their Jokes get Repeated.

Their Recipes are Cooked.

Their Expressions Sneak

into Another Generation.

Someone catches Themselves saying something Exactly the Way their

Mother Used to Say It.

There She Is.

Perhaps Immortality doesn’t Need to Mean an Eternal Individual Consciousness is Profound.

We Ripple through One Another.

Imagine Every Human Whoever Lived.

Not Merely the Famous.

Forget Emperors for a moment.

Forget Presidents.

Forget Kings.

Forget Conquerors.

History Loves Important People

because, they Left Paperwork.

But most Human Lives were lived Anonymously.

A Prehistoric Mother holding her baby

during a Storm.

A Child laughing beside a River

Ten Thousand Years ago.

An Old Man telling stories beside a fire.

Someone falling in Love in a Village whose Name is Forgotten.

Someone Grieving.

Someone Dancing.

Someone Terrified.

Someone Hopeful.

Billions upon Billions of Human Experiences.

Gone from Recorded History.

But they Happened.

That Matters.

A Life doesn’t become meaningless merely because nobody wrote it down.

The Universe Witnessed it, if nothing else.

For one moment in Cosmic History, that Consciousness Existed.

That Snowflake Formed.

No Duplicate.

No Replacement.

Then…

WOOSH !!!

Gone.

Perhaps that’s tragic.

Perhaps that’s beautiful.

Perhaps it’s both.

Humans build Monuments because we dislike Impermanence.

Time replies with Magnificent Indifference.

Mountains Erode.

Continents Move.

Even Galaxies Change.

Nothing Physical we know appears

Guaranteed Permanence.

Perhaps that’s, Precisely Why Moments Matter.

A Sunset isn’t Worthless,

because it Lasts Minutes.

Music isn’t Meaningless because,

the Final Note Eventually sounds.

A Meal isn’t Pointless because it gets Eaten.

A Conversation isn’t Worthless because it Ends.

A Life doesn’t need Eternity to Possess Value.

Maybe, Fragility Creates Value.

The Snowflake is beautiful Because it melts.

But other Conscious Beings, Care how you Treat them.

Perhaps that’s Enough.

A Single Act can Travel much Further than the Person Performing it Ever Knows.

Maybe Free Will Isn’t Absolute Control

WHAT IF DESTINY ISN’T A PERSON?

We’ve Personified Destiny

throughout this Little Adventure.

It’s Fun.

I Imagine Destiny,

wearing spectacles,

carrying an Enormous filing system.

“Christian?”

“Yes?”

“Page 47.”

“Why?”

“Don’t ask questions.”

“But…”

“PAGE 47.”

Rather Bureaucratic,

for an Eternal Cosmic Force.

But perhaps Destiny isn’t an Entity at All.

Perhaps Destiny is Simply the name we give Patterns when Looking Backward.

Something Happens.

Then Another Thing.

Years Later We Connect Them.

“It was Meant to Be.”

Was it?

Maybe.

Or perhaps Human Brains are Magnificent Pattern-making Machines.

We build Narratives because stories help us Understand Chaos.

Sometimes those Narratives

Reveal Genuine Structure.

Sometimes They Merely Comfort US.

Distinguishing between the Two is Difficult.

But maybe We don’t have to Murder Mystery simply because We can’t Prove Destiny Exists.

Wonder & Scepticism can share the same table.

They Might even enjoy Afternoon Tea !?!?

THE CLOCK IS NOT THE TIME

We’ve Confused clocks with Time.

A Clock measures Intervals.

That’s Useful.

Without Clocks we’d miss trains,

appointment & dinner reservations.

Civilization would collapse,

although possibly,

in a surprisingly relaxed manner.

But the numbers aren’t Time Itself.

Midnight isn’t a Physical Wall.

Tuesday isn’t floating through Space.

September, doesn’t exist independently

in the Cosmos.

These are Human Systems.

Useful Systems.

Brilliant Systems.

But, Systems nonetheless.

The Universe isn’t wearing a wristwatch.

Our experience of Time is Stranger.

Five minutes, waiting for important medical news can feel eternal.

Five hours with someone you Adore can disappear Instantly.

A Childhood summer once seemed endless.

As adults, years seem to Gallop.

Same Clocks.

Different Experience.

Perhaps psychological Time is partly constructed by Consciousness.

Which makes our Old saying even more questionable.

“As Time Passes…”

Maybe Time isn’t Passing.

Maybe awareness is moving through changing states and calling the movement Time.

WHAT IF ALL THE PAGES ALREADY EXIST?

Modern Physics complicates matters further.

Relativity teaches us that Time isn’t completely separate from Space.

Space and Time form spacetime.

Different observers can disagree about durations and simultaneity depending upon motion and gravity.

There is no single Universal Cosmic clock ticking identically everywhere.

That’s not philosophy.

That’s physics.

Which is deeply inconsiderate of physics because reality was confusing enough already.

Some interpretations encourage a picture sometimes called a “Block Universe,” in which past, present and future are all parts of spacetime.

That doesn’t prove Destiny.

It doesn’t prove your future is fixed in the ordinary sense.

But it does challenge our Intuitive feeling that only the present is real and the future doesn’t yet exist.

Perhaps the book metaphor isn’t entirely ridiculous.

Maybe the pages exist in ways we don’t naturally perceive.

We experience them sequentially because that’s how consciousness travels through them.

Reader through Book.

Life through Time.

THEN WHAT IS NOW?

Try catching the present moment.

There.

Gone.

Try Again.

Gone.

Every word you just read is already in your past.

The sentence you’re about to read is your future.

Now read it.

It became present.

And now it is past.

Where exactly was the boundary?

The present seems real.

Yet it has no obvious duration.

If it lasts one second, half of that second is already past before the second finishes.

Reduce it further.

Milliseconds.

Microseconds.

Smaller.

Eventually “NOW” begins looking less like a place and more like a moving interface between memory and anticipation.

We Live on the razor’s edge.

Behind us: Memory.

Ahead: Possibility.

Beneath our feet:

NOW.

Perhaps that’s why so many Spiritual traditions Emphasize Presence.

Not because the Past doesn’t matter.

Not because planning is foolish.

But because this tiny moving window is the only place where experience actually seems to occur.

THE GREAT HUMAN CONTRADICTION

We are Mortal Creatures obsessed with permanence.

Tiny Creatures obsessed with Importance.

Ignorant Creatures obsessed with certainty.

Social Creatures who continually divide ourselves into groups.

Intelligent Creatures who repeatedly do Astonishingly stupid things.

Compassionate Creatures capable of Extraordinary Cruelty.

Violent creatures Capable of Extraordinary tenderness.

We build Hospital & Bombs.

Libraries & Prisons.

Schools & Propaganda.

Cathedrals & Concentration Camps.

We Rescue Strangers from Burning Buildings.

We kill Strangers because someone tells us they’re the Enemy.

Humanity isn’t easily summarized.

We’re Contradictory.

Maybe that’s why Our Page remains Interesting.

If We were Entirely Good, the Story would be Simpler.

If Entirely Evil, Equally Simple.

Instead we’re capable of Both.

Sometimes before breakfast.

What if Intelligence has a Test?

Not imposed by some Celestial examiner.

A Natural Test.

Can Intelligence Survive Itself?

Can Knowledge Outrun Wisdom without Catastrophe?

Can Technology become Powerful without power Destroying its creators?

Can Tribal animals become Planetary Citizens?

Can Creatures Evolved to compete Learn enough Cooperation to Survive?

Perhaps every Technological Civilization Eventually reaches this Point.

The moment when it becomes Capable of either Leaving its Cradle…

or Burning It.

Maybe the Silent Stars aren’t Silent because Nobody ever Lived There.

Maybe they’re Silent because most Civilizations Don’t Make it Past Adolescence.

Or Perhaps They’re Wisely Avoiding Us.

One Glance at Our Broadcasts &:

“Lock The Doors.”

Can’t Entirely Blame Them.

Humanity finds itself in the Greatest Library Imaginable& has been issued a Library card granting Access to approximately half a shelf.

Naturally We’ve already begun Arguing about who Owns the Building.

PERHAPS WE ARE NOT MEANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING

That Possibility Annoys Us.

We like Answers.

Maybe some questions Exceed Human Cognitive Architecture.

A dog can be Intelligent & still never Understand Calculus.

Not because calculus is Mystical.

Because the dog’s brain wasn’t built for it.

Perhaps there are aspects of reality similarly beyond us.

Our brains Evolved primarily to Survive.

Find Food.

Avoid Predators.

Navigate Social groups.

Reproduce.

Recognizing the ultimate structure of reality wasn’t necessarily part of the package.

Yet somehow those survival brains learned mathematics and built telescopes.

So perhaps we shouldn’t underestimate ourselves either.

The monkey has surprised everyone.

Including the Monkey.

ONE PAGE

And after wandering across infinity, we’re brought back to something very small.

One Life.

Yours.

Mine.

Anyone’s.

A page.

Maybe seventy years.

Eighty.

Ninety.

A Hundred.

Perhaps five minutes.

Nobody is guaranteed a particular length.

That’s the cruelty and beauty of the arrangement.

We don’t know where Destiny placed the final punctuation mark.

Perhaps that’s why we should stop behaving as though life begins later.

Later is a hypothesis.

Now is evidence.

Call someone.

Forgive someone if forgiveness is deserved.

Walk away when walking away is necessary.

Create something.

Learn something.

Laugh.

Be ridiculous occasionally.

Stand under stars.

Ask impossible questions.

Love somebody.

Love several people in different ways.

Help a stranger.

Plant something you’ll never sit beneath.

Leave a sentence on another person’s page worth remembering.

Because whatever Time ultimately is…

Our passage through it appears brief.

EVENTUALLY…

The Library grows quiet.

Our Reader has travelled a long way.

The page is covered with writing.

Some beautiful.

Some embarrassing.

Some crossed out.

Some sentences never completed.

Names fill the margins.

People loved.

People lost.

Places visited.

Mistakes made.

Lessons learned far too late.

There are tears on parts of the page.

Laughter on others.

Eventually…

Destiny approaches.

No trumpet.

No thunder.

No dramatic music.

Perhaps merely a Gentle Presence.

The reader looks up.

“Already?”

Destiny nods.

“But I’m not finished.”

Destiny smiles.

“Nobody ever is.”

The Reader looks down.

There were still things to do.

Questions unanswered.

People to see.

Words unsaid.

Books unread.

Places unexplored.

Mysteries unsolved.

“Can I have another page?”

Destiny doesn’t answer.

Perhaps cannot.

Perhaps will not.

Perhaps another page exists somewhere we cannot see.

The reader reluctantly releases the book.

Then…

WOOSH.

A Snowflake melts.

A Consciousness disappears from our view.

A Page turns.

SOMEWHERE ELSE

A Child takes its first breath.

Eyes open.

Tiny fingers move.

Nobody knows what that life will become.

Scientist?

Artist?

Teacher?

Troublemaker?

Parent?

Explorer?

Nobody famous at all?

It doesn’t matter.

A fresh consciousness has entered the library.

A New Reader.

A new page.

Destiny has plonked another human into Time.

No Instructions.

No Map.

No Explanation.

Just:

Here You Are !!!

Make something of it.

AS TIME PASSES BY?

So perhaps we should retire the phrase.

Time may not be going anywhere.

Maybe it isn’t rushing.

Maybe it isn’t running out.

Maybe it isn’t chasing us.

Maybe Time is the vast book.

The impossible library.

The stage upon which reality unfolds.

We…

We are the Travellers.

The readers.

The characters.

Perhaps even, in some tiny way, the co-authors.

We arrive somewhere in the middle.

We read a few paragraphs.

Write a few lines.

Meet other characters.

Laugh.

Cry.

Love.

Fight.

Build.

Destroy.

Learn.

Forget.

Wonder.

Then leave.

The book remains.

Perhaps somewhere beyond our understanding, every page remains too.

Maybe nothing is truly lost.

Maybe everything is.

We don’t know.

Perhaps the mystery itself is part of the gift.

Because if we knew every answer…

If every shelf were open…

If every ending were revealed…

If Destiny handed us the completed script at birth…

Would we still experience wonder?

Would courage mean anything if we knew the outcome?

Would hope?

Would faith?

Would choice?

Would discovery?

Perhaps uncertainty isn’t a flaw in existence.

Perhaps it is one of its essential ingredients.

Maybe we’re supposed to turn the page without knowing what comes next.

THE LAST QUESTION

Still one question sits waiting in the darkness beyond the shelves.

Older than Civilization.

Older than Religion.

Older than Philosophy.

Perhaps older than Stars.

Who wrote the book?

God?

Nature?

Mathematics?

Chance?

Consciousness?

Everything?

Nothing?

Perhaps one day Humanity

will discover the answer.

Perhaps we’ll open the final locked door and find an explanation so beautiful that every argument suddenly becomes irrelevant.

Perhaps we’ll discover there never was a door.

Perhaps the answer has been around us all along and we’re simply

incapable of recognizing it.

Or perhaps the universe will remain wonderfully, infuriatingly silent.

Maybe that’s all right.

Because perhaps our job was never to

possess the library.

Perhaps our job was simply to

Read our Page Well.

To leave the margins a little kinder than we found them.

To discover without destroying.

To question without hating

those who answer differently.

To understand that certainty

is not the same thing as truth.

To realise that every stranger we meet is carrying a page every bit as fragile as ours.

To remember that nobody knows how many paragraphs remain.

Occasionally…

to stop.

Look up.

See the impossible universe stretching overhead.

Appreciate the sheer absurd magnificence of being here at all.

Because against all conceivable odds, for this tiny interval…

You are conscious.

You are reading.

You are thinking.

You are wondering.

You are here.

Not forever.

But Now.

Perhaps Now is enough.

So the next time somebody sighs:

“As Time passes by…”

Smile.

Shake your head.

No.

Time isn’t passing us.

We are passing through it.

One fragile page at a time.

One, Extraordinary Snowflake after Another.

Through a Book with no beginning that we can find…

Perhaps no ending.

Somewhere in that unfathomable cosmic library, surrounded by billions upon billions of unopened volumes, humanity stands on tiptoe, reaching toward the next shelf and asking the question that has driven us from caves to telescopes:

“WHAT ELSE IS IN HERE?”

And the Universe appears to whisper:

“Turn the page.”

So we do.

Because whatever else we may be…

WHAT IF GOD HAD CREATED EVE FIRST?

A Slightly Irreverent Reconsideration of Creation, Humanity, Men, Women, Religion, War, Sex, Power, and Why God Might Occasionally Wonder Where It All Went Wrong

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.

So far, so good.

Light appeared.

The oceans settled down.

Mountains rose.

Trees grew.

Flowers bloomed.

Birds flew.

Fish swam.

Dinosaurs presumably wandered about for a while until somebody in management decided that experiment had become unnecessarily large.

Then came the animals.

Elephants, giraffes, lions, butterflies, dogs, cats, mosquitoes and several creatures whose purpose remains difficult to establish.

Finally God looked across Creation and thought:

“I need someone sensible in charge of all this.”

So God created Eve.

First.

Not from anybody’s rib.

Not as somebody’s assistant.

Not because somebody else was lonely.

Not as an afterthought.

Not as a companion manufactured from spare anatomical material.

Just Eve.

The first human being.

Complete.

Independent.

Curious.

Intelligent.

Capable.

Already wise enough to know that if a talking snake offers you unsolicited dietary advice, there is probably a catch.

Which immediately creates a problem for the serpent.

Poor bugger.

He has been rehearsing for weeks.

He slithers casually toward Eve one afternoon.

“Excuse me…”

Eve looks down.

“Yes?”

“Have you considered eating the fruit from that tree?”

“Yes.”

The serpent brightens.

“Well?”

“I decided not to.”

“Why?”

“Because God specifically said not to.”

The serpent pauses.

“But wouldn’t you like knowledge?”

Eve stares at him.

“I already have knowledge.”

“Good and evil?”

“I can recognise a talking snake trying to sell me something I didn’t ask for, so apparently yes.”

There goes the entire Book of Genesis.

Three chapters shorter already.

Humanity hasn’t even properly begun and Eve has saved future theologians approximately two thousand years of arguing about an apple that the Bible never actually says was an apple.

The serpent slithers away, deeply disappointed.

Perhaps into advertising.

GOD NOTICES A PROBLEM

After some time God notices Eve wandering around Eden by herself.

She seems perfectly happy.

This is confusing.

God had rather expected loneliness.

But Eve has animals to talk to, rivers to explore, stars to watch and an entire planet without emails, traffic jams, politicians or people trying to contact her about an extended warranty.

Frankly, she is having a wonderful time.

Nevertheless, God eventually asks:

“Eve, would you like a mate?”

Eve considers this carefully.

“What sort?”

God hadn’t anticipated a follow-up question.

“A man?”

“What does he do?”

“Well…”

God thinks.

“He could help with the heavy lifting.”

Eve nods.

“That could be useful.”

“Companship.”

“Possibly.”

“Together you could populate the Earth.”

Eve raises an eyebrow.

“Anything else?”

God hesitates.

Apparently specifications are required.

Eve continues:

“Because if I’m going to spend the next several thousand years being blamed for everything, I would quite like some options.”

God thinks about this.

Then smiles.

“Twins.”

“Twins?”

“Two men.”

Eve looks suspicious.

“Isn’t one enough?”

“Trust me.”

So God creates

two brothers.

Adam and Steve.

Yes.

Steve.

Because somewhere, thousands of years in the future, somebody is going to stand outside a church waving a placard saying:

“IT’S ADAM AND EVE, NOT ADAM AND STEVE!”

God, having a sense of humour vastly underestimated by organized religion, has been waiting since Creation for precisely that moment.

Adam is straight.

Steve is gay.

Adam looks around Eden and says:

“That’s a very large tree.”

Steve looks around Eden and says:

“Who chose these curtains?”

There aren’t any curtains.

Exactly.

This bothers him immediately.

Adam begins moving rocks.

Steve begins rearranging Eden.

Within three days Adam has built a shelter.

Within three days Steve has redesigned it.

Eve looks at both of them.

God looks down from Heaven.

Creation is finally getting interesting.

NO ORIGINAL SIN

Now we arrive at the first enormous difference.

There is no Fall.

There is no original sin.

Nobody bites forbidden fruit.

Nobody suddenly notices they are naked and becomes embarrassed about it.

Nobody hides behind a shrub because God might see their bottom.

Think about how peculiar that part of the traditional story actually is.

God created human bodies.

Humans discover they have human bodies.

Humans become ashamed of the bodies God created.

Religion then spends thousands of years telling humans to cover the bodies God created because God might be offended by seeing the bodies God created.

Even God must occasionally require a flowchart.

But in our alternative Eden, none of that happens.

The human body remains what it originally was:

A body.

Not dirty.

Not sinful.

Not shameful.

Not something requiring censorship.

Just the magnificent, ridiculous biological contraption through which human beings experience life.

Sex isn’t dirty.

Nakedness isn’t evil.

Desire isn’t automatically wicked.

Perhaps most importantly:

Women aren’t saddled with the ancient accusation that somehow everything went wrong because Eve couldn’t resist a piece of fruit.

Imagine removing that single idea from Western history.

No Eve the temptress.

No woman as the gateway to sin.

No female curiosity being portrayed as dangerous.

No suggestion that woman came second.

No suggestion that woman was created for man.

Eve was first.

Woman becomes the original human template.

Suddenly history develops very differently.

WHAT HAPPENS TO PATRIARCHY?

It has a considerably harder sales pitch.

A priest stands before his congregation in approximately 500 BC and announces:

“Men are naturally intended to rule women!”

Someone in the congregation raises a hand.

“Why?”

“Because God created…”

The priest stops.

Bugger.

Eve was first.

He tries another approach.

“Because women are spiritually weaker!”

Another hand rises.

“But Eve resisted the serpent.”

“Yes, but…”

“Adam wasn’t even there.”

“Well…”

“God trusted Eve with Eden before men existed.”

The priest begins sweating.

Religious patriarchy has encountered an unfortunate obstacle.

Its own creation story.

This doesn’t mean women would automatically dominate men instead.

That would merely reverse the stupidity.

Replacing patriarchy with matriarchy isn’t necessarily enlightenment.

It’s just moving the throne.

Perhaps the deeper lesson of Eve First would be that being first does not mean being superior.

Eve came first.

Adam and Steve came next.

None owns the others.

Nobody is somebody else’s property.

Nobody was created to obey somebody else.

They were created differently because Creation itself thrives on difference.

Which brings us rather beautifully to Steve.

THE FIRST GAY MAN

Poor Steve hasn’t even been alive for a week and future religious conservatives are already furious about him.

The interesting thing is that they can’t claim homosexuality came from the Fall.

There wasn’t one.

They can’t claim it resulted from human corruption.

Steve was created directly by God.

They can’t say:

“God made

Adam and Eve.”

Because God did.

Plus Steve.

There he is.

Standing beside them.

Possibly improving Adam’s wardrobe.

Human diversity therefore exists from the beginning.

Not as an accident.

Not as degeneration.

Not as punishment.

Not as rebellion.

As part of Creation.

Imagine the historical consequences.

Thousands of years of persecution suddenly lose their theological foundation.

You cannot easily burn someone at the stake for being exactly what your creation story says God deliberately created.

Humanity would probably still find reasons to persecute people, naturally.

We are astonishingly inventive in that department.

If we couldn’t hate somebody for sexuality, we’d probably start a war over whether sandals should have three straps or four.

But one enormous category of religious prejudice would have been robbed of its mythology.

Steve’s presence creates another fascinating change.

Family itself becomes broader from the beginning.

Humanity’s first household isn’t simply:

Man + Woman = Family.

It is:

Woman + Man

+ Brother + Friendship + Community = Family.

Perhaps children will grow up understanding that families take different forms.

Perhaps Steve eventually finds another man.

Perhaps other humans arrive.

Perhaps adoption becomes sacred.

Perhaps chosen family becomes as honoured as biological family.

Imagine how different civilization becomes when belonging is more important than conformity.

DOES EVE RULE EDEN?

Probably not.

She organizes it.

There is a difference.

Adam says:

“We need leadership.”

Eve says:

“We need cooperation.”

Steve says:

“We need cushions.”

So civilization begins.

Decisions are made around a table rather than from a throne.

Nobody says:

“I am king because God chose me.”

Eve would probably respond:

“God chose all of us, darling. .. Sit down.”

That one sentence could have prevented an astonishing amount of nonsense.

Divine right of kings?

Gone.

Male spiritual supremacy?

Difficult.

Women being excluded from religious leadership?

Absurd.

Imagine somebody telling Eve:

“I’m sorry, women cannot speak in church.”

Eve:

“I spoke to God before you existed.”

Meeting adjourned.

WOULD THERE BE FEWER WARS?

Possibly.

But we should resist the equally silly idea that women are biologically incapable of violence.

History contains plenty of formidable women who could wage war perfectly effectively.

Humans are humans.

Give us fear, tribalism, resources, ambition and enough flags and we can turn almost anything into a battlefield.

But societies structured less rigidly around masculine domination might develop different ideas about power.

For much of recorded history, leadership has been associated with conquest.

Strong leader.

Strong army.

Strong borders.

Strong weapons.

Strong response.

Strong retaliation.

Everybody must be strong.

Eventually everyone is so busy proving how strong they are that thousands of nineteen-year-olds are lying dead in a field.

Perhaps Eve First creates another definition.

Strength becomes the ability to prevent war.

Imagine that.

Generals receive medals for battles that never happened.

National leaders boast:

“During my administration, nobody invaded anybody.”

Crowds cheer.

Weapons manufacturers become extremely annoyed.

Defense budgets shrink.

Hospitals expand.

Schools improve.

Children eat.

The arms industry sends God a strongly worded letter.

MEN WOULD CHANGE TOO

This matters.

Patriarchy hasn’t exactly been wonderful for men either.

For generations men have been told:

Don’t cry.

Don’t show weakness.

Don’t be frightened.

Don’t ask for help.

Provide.

Protect.

Compete.

Win.

Dominate.

Be tough.

So then we wonder why so many men reach adulthood emotionally equipped like a garden shed.

In Eve’s First society, perhaps masculinity develops differently.

Adam is valued for his strength without being told strength is his entire identity.

He can lift the bloody rocks.

Wonderful.

But he can also love.

Nurture.

Cry.

Cook.

Sing.

Hold his children.

Tell Steve he loves him without worrying somebody might question his sexuality.

Steve doesn’t threaten Adam’s masculinity.

Why would he?

They’re brothers.

Different men.

Both men.

Neither needs to diminish the other to exist.

Imagine boys growing up with that story.

Adam isn’t superior because he is straight.

Steve isn’t lesser because he is gay.

Eve isn’t subordinate because she is female.

Difference doesn’t create hierarchy.

Difference creates humanity.

RELIGION WOULD HAVE A VERY DIFFERENT PROBLEM

Organized religion would eventually appear.

Humans cannot leave mystery alone.

We experience something transcendent and within twenty minutes somebody forms a committee.

Soon there are robes.

Then buildings.

Then rules.

Then somebody discovers gold.

Then somebody else decides God requires a very expensive chair.

Eventually the original spiritual experience is buried beneath administration.

Eve would be horrified.

She visits the first cathedral.

Gold everywhere.

Marble.

Jewels.

Silk robes.

Massive doors.

Outside, a hungry child begs for food.

Eve turns to the bishop.

“What is this?”

“The House of God.”

Eve looks around.

“No it isn’t.”

The bishop gasps.

“It was built for His glory!”

Eve points outside.

“God already built mountains.”

That would be awkward.

She continues:

“You spent fifty million on this?”

“For God.”

“He made galaxies.”

“But…”

“Feed the child.”

Perhaps religion remembers its purpose.

Not worshipping buildings.

Not protecting institutions.

Not controlling sexuality.

Not accumulating wealth.

Not declaring who’s going to Hell.

Helping people.

Radical concept, apparently.

WHAT ABOUT THE BIBLE?

It would certainly read differently.

The first sentence involving humanity would not effectively establish male priority.

Instead:

“God created Eve, and saw that she was good.”

Girls grow up hearing that.

Think about the psychological difference.

Woman is not the derivative creation.

Woman isn’t temptation.

Woman isn’t weakness.

Woman isn’t the reason paradise was lost.

Woman is the first caretaker of paradise.

Motherhood might consequently be honoured without becoming compulsory.

Because Eve’s first identity isn’t mother.

It’s HUMAN.

That’s important.

Before she has children, before she meets Adam, before sexuality, marriage or family, Eve exists completely.

Her value is intrinsic.

Imagine what that idea might have done across history.

Women might still choose motherhood.

But they wouldn’t be told motherhood is what gives them value.

Women might marry.

Or not.

Have children.

Or not.

Lead.

Explore.

Invent.

Write.

Study.

Build.

Govern.

Because the first woman did not require a man to validate her existence.

God had already done that.

SCIENCE MIGHT HAVE HAD AN EASIER TIME

Eve is curious.

Curiosity never caused the Fall.

Therefore curiosity isn’t suspicious.

Questions aren’t rebellion.

Knowledge isn’t dangerous.

Science and spirituality don’t become enemies.

A child asks:

“Why are the Stars there?”

The priest doesn’t reply:

“Because God put them there. Stop asking.”

He replies:

“I don’t know. Let’s find out.”

Now civilization moves.

Astronomy flourishes.

Medicine advances.

Anatomy isn’t taboo.

Women are studied medically as actual human beings rather than inconvenient variations on men.

Mental health isn’t automatically attributed to demons.

Epilepsy isn’t possession.

Disease isn’t divine punishment.

Galileo doesn’t spend quite so much time explaining the obvious to people wearing enormous hats.

God watches humans discovering evolution.

Eve asks:

“Does this threaten you?”

God laughs.

“I invented it.”

SEX BECOMES MUCH LESS COMPLICATED

This could save humanity several million therapy sessions.

Without the Fall, sexuality never becomes inherently associated with shame.

Consent matters.

Love matters.

Responsibility matters.

Kindness matters.

But shame?

No.

Sex isn’t something men take from women.

Virginity isn’t a commodity.

Women’s bodies aren’t family property.

Men aren’t praised for sexual experience while women are condemned for precisely the same behaviour.

Homosexuality isn’t treated as a Spiritual catastrophe.

Nobody spends Sunday morning obsessing about what consenting adults did Saturday night.

Priests have to find another sermon topic.

Perhaps poverty.

War.

Greed.

Cruelty.

Corruption.

You know.

The easy stuff.

WOULD WE STILL HAVE BIGOTS?

Absolutely.

Let’s not get carried away.

Human beings could be given paradise, immortality and free

Wi-Fi and by Thursday somebody would form a group insisting their section of Eden was superior.

Bigotry does not require religion.

It requires fear.

Fear of difference.

Fear of losing status.

Fear of change.

Fear that somebody else receiving equality somehow diminishes you.

But Eve First changes the opening assumptions.

The bigot can no longer easily say:

“God intended everyone to be like me.”

Because the first three humans aren’t alike.

Woman.

Straight man.

Gay man.

Diversity is literally standing there on page one.

God doesn’t tolerate diversity.

God creates it.

That distinction changes everything.

RACISM HAS A PROBLEM TOO

If we’re rewriting Creation, perhaps humanity’s later diversity is presented equally clearly.

Different skin colours emerge.

Different features.

Different languages.

Different cultures.

None cursed.

None chosen above the others.

None declared superior.

God looks at the whole astonishing mixture and says:

“Yes. That’s what I wanted.”

Some future racist says:

“But surely God prefers people who look like me?”

God replies:

“Why would I create billions of people and only like your lot?”

Another theological meeting ends prematurely.

MONEY

Eventually Adam invents barter.

Eve approves cautiously.

Steve invents retail.

Civilization is doomed.

Money itself isn’t the problem.

Money is useful.

It allows people to exchange labour, goods and ideas.

Then somebody decides they need more money than they could possibly spend in thirty lifetimes.

Eve is confused.

“You have ten billion?”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do with it?”

“Make another billion.”

“Why?”

“So I’ll have eleven.”

“Are people hungry?”

“Yes.”

“Homeless?”

“Yes.”

“Children dying because they can’t afford medicine?”

“Yes.”

Eve stares.

“You want another

billion?”

“Yes.”

She calls God.

“I think we’ve found the serpent.”

THE SERPENT WAS NEVER THE PROBLEM

Perhaps this is where our silly alternative creation story becomes rather serious.

Maybe humanity has spent too long blaming serpents.

Blaming Eve.

Blaming Adam.

Blaming Satan.

Blaming immigrants.

Blaming foreigners.

Blaming gay people.

Blaming women.

Blaming men.

Blaming Muslims.

Blaming Christians.

Blaming Jews.

Blaming atheists.

Blaming conservatives.

Blaming liberals.

Blaming whichever group happens to be convenient this century.

Anything except looking into the mirror.

Maybe the serpent doesn’t need to tempt us.

We tempt ourselves.

Power.

Greed.

Fear.

Status.

Control.

Possession.

Certainty.

The belief that we are right and therefore somebody else must be wrong.

Those are the fruits humanity keeps eating.

Unlike Eve, we keep going back for seconds.

POLITICS IN EVE’S WORLD

Imagine the first election.

Candidate One announces:

“I alone can save you!”

Eve immediately crosses his name off.

Candidate Two says:

“My opponents are enemies of the people!”

Crossed off.

Candidate Three says:

“God wants you to vote for me!”

Eve stands up.

“God has not endorsed anybody.”

Candidate Four says:

“I don’t have all the answers. I’ll appoint people who know more than I do, listen to evidence and change policy when the facts change.”

Eve whispers:

“That one.”

Politics becomes less about personality and more about competence.

Terribly boring.

Civilization flourishes.

Television ratings collapse.

EDUCATION

Children are taught four sacred words:

I do not know.

Not knowing isn’t weakness.

It’s the beginning of learning.

Eve didn’t fall because she wanted knowledge.

Therefore knowledge isn’t sinful.

Questions are encouraged.

Children ask about God.

Evolution.

Sex.

Death.

Identity.

Consciousness.

Other religions.

Nobody panics.

A teacher can say:

“We don’t know.”

A priest can say:

“I might be wrong.”

A politician can say:

“I changed my mind because the evidence changed.”

At which point our alternative universe becomes so fantastical that even talking serpents seem realistic.

WHAT DOES STEVE CONTRIBUTE?

More than fabulous curtains.

Steve becomes a permanent reminder that human beings were never designed from one mould.

He understands early what it means to be different.

That makes him valuable.

People who experience difference often notice things comfortable majorities overlook.

Steve asks:

“Does everybody feel welcome?”

Adam asks:

“Is it strong?”

Eve asks:

“Is it wise?”

Three perspectives.

One civilization.

Perhaps that’s the lesson.

Humanity works best not when everyone becomes identical but when differences cooperate.

The strong need the sensitive.

The practical need the imaginative.

The sceptical need the hopeful.

The young need the old.

Men need women.

Women need men.

Straight people need Gay people.

Believers need unbelievers asking uncomfortable questions.

Occasionally everybody needs Steve to tell them that beige is not a personality.

WHAT WOULD GOD THINK OF US NOW?

Imagine Eve, Adam and Steve being brought forward to the twenty-first century.

They look around.

Satellites.

Hospitals.

Aircraft.

Computers.

Art.

Music.

Cities.

Science.

Humans have walked on the Moon.

We can transplant hearts.

See distant galaxies.

Communicate across the planet instantly.

Split atoms.

Decode DNA.

Create artificial intelligence.

Adam is amazed.

Steve loves the shoes.

Eve is speechless.

Then they see the wars.

Children starving.

People sleeping beneath bridges.

Religious persecution.

Racism.

Homophobia.

Misogyny.

Weapons capable of destroying cities.

Oceans full of plastic.

Forests disappearing.

Politicians screaming at one another.

People killing each other over different interpretations of God.

Eve finally asks:

“What happened?”

Humanity replies:

“It’s complicated.”

“No,” she says.

“It isn’t.”

She points toward a starving child.

“Feed them.”

Toward a battlefield.

“Stop.”

Toward a homeless person.

“Shelter them.”

Toward someone being persecuted.

“Protect them.”

Toward polluted water.

“Clean it.”

Toward hatred.

“Stop teaching it.”

We begin explaining economics.

Geopolitics.

Doctrine.

National security.

Markets.

Tradition.

Sovereignty.

Historical grievances.

Eve listens patiently.

Then says:

“You’ve invented very sophisticated explanations for behaving very stupidly.”

Adam nods.

Steve whispers:

“I like her.”

PERHAPS GOD CREATED THE WRONG HUMAN FIRST

Or perhaps we simply told the story wrong.

Because this isn’t really an argument about whether Eve should literally have been created first.

It’s about what creation myths teach us.

Stories matter.

The stories civilizations tell become invisible architecture.

They influence who gets authority.

Who gets blamed.

Who belongs.

Who is considered normal.

Who speaks.

Who obeys.

Who leads.

Who is feared.

Who is loved.

Who is allowed to be fully human.

Change the opening story and perhaps you change everything that follows.

If Eve had been first, maybe womanhood would never have required an apology.

If Adam had arrived second, perhaps masculinity wouldn’t have required domination.

If Steve had arrived alongside him, perhaps sexuality would never have become a weapon.

If nobody had fallen, perhaps bodies wouldn’t have become shameful.

If curiosity hadn’t caused catastrophe, perhaps knowledge wouldn’t have frightened religion.

If diversity had existed from Creation, perhaps difference wouldn’t have become evidence of sin.

if God had made it absolutely clear that no human being was created above another, perhaps we’d have had fewer kings claiming divine authority, fewer priests claiming exclusive access to God, fewer men claiming ownership over women, fewer nations claiming sacred superiority and fewer people convinced Heaven shares their prejudices.

Would there have been fewer wars?

I suspect so.

Not because Eve is magically peaceful.

Not because women are morally superior.

Not because Gay men possess secret diplomatic powers.

Although frankly, putting Steve between two furious dictators and telling him he cannot leave until they have discussed their feelings might be worth trying.

There would be fewer wars because the central mythology would begin with cooperation rather than hierarchy.

Nobody owns Eden.

Nobody owns God.

Nobody owns truth.

Nobody owns another human being.

THE RETURN TO EDEN

Perhaps Eden was never really a garden.

Perhaps it was a state of consciousness.

A moment when humans understood that everything was connected.

People.

Animals.

Water.

Earth.

Trees.

Air.

Life.

Perhaps the Fall wasn’t eating fruit.

Perhaps the real Fall happened whenever humans began saying:

Mine.

My land.

My God.

My race.

My nation.

My truth.

My wealth.

My people.

My superiority.

Maybe every wall we built took us another step outside Eden.

Perhaps returning doesn’t require finding some mythical garden guarded by angels.

Perhaps it requires remembering something embarrassingly simple.

We belong to one another.

Not as possessions.

As responsibilities.

ONE LAST VISIT TO THE GARDEN

Thousands of years later, God visits Eden.

Eve is sitting beneath the forbidden tree.

Adam is nearby repairing something that probably didn’t need repairing.

Steve is rearranging flowers.

The serpent appears.

Older now.

A little tired.

He looks at Eve.

“Still haven’t tried the fruit?”

“No.”

“Never tempted?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Eve thinks.

“Because wisdom isn’t knowing everything.”

The serpent waits.

Eve smiles.

“Wisdom is knowing when enough is enough.”

God hears this.

Smiles

Adam joins them.

Steve arrives carrying flowers.

For a moment the four of them look out across Creation.

A world full of beauty.

Potential.

Danger.

Love.

Ridiculousness.

Possibility.

God says:

“You know, this could work.”

Eve replies:

“It will.”

Adam asks:

“What should we do first?”

Steve surveys Eden critically.

“Well, before humanity begins, we really must do something about all this beige.”

God laughs.

somewhere in the unimaginably distant future, a religious bigot prepares a sign declaring:

GOD MADE ADAM AND EVE, NOT ADAM AND STEVE.

A small breeze passes through the Garden.

Eve looks at Adam.

Adam looks at Steve.

Steve looks upward.

God says nothing.

But there is unmistakably laughter in the heavens.

Perhaps that is the part of Creation we have forgotten.

Maybe God is not nearly as offended by our differences as we are.

Maybe God never asked humanity to become identical.

Maybe the extraordinary variety of human beings isn’t evidence that Creation went wrong.

Maybe it’s evidence that Creation went exactly as intended.

Men.

Women.

Gay.

Straight.

Black.

White.

Brown.

Believer.

Doubter.

Dreamer.

Thinker.

Builder.

Artist.

Scientist.

Mystic.

Every one of us different.

Every one of us temporary.

Every one of us standing on the same tiny blue planet hurtling through an incomprehensibly enormous universe while arguing about which particular group has been personally selected by the Creator of several hundred billion trillion stars.

Perhaps God occasionally watches us and mutters:

“Really?”

Perhaps the great spiritual revolution humanity still needs isn’t another religion.

Or another prophet.

Or another political movement.

Perhaps it is simply the realization that difference was never the enemy.

Fear was.

Greed was.

Ignorance was.

The hunger to dominate was.

The belief that another human being must become smaller so that we can feel bigger was.

Maybe Eve would have understood that from the beginning.

Maybe Adam would have learned it.

Maybe Steve would have made it fabulous.

Maybe the serpent?

The poor bastard would have been unemployed.

Although knowing humanity, we’d eventually have found him a perfectly suitable career.
