With the mission to preserve and promote the Philippine dress, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in partnership with Bench/Suyen Corporation and the local government of Binan City in Laguna, will hold a terno-making workshop from May 19 to 24, and an exhibition from May 22 to June 28, at the Sentrong Pangkultura ng Binan, Binan City, Laguna.

Billed as “Fashioning the Terno,” the workshop series kicked off in October 2025 with its Mindanao leg in Iligan City, followed by its Visayas leg in Iloilo City last April.

The next series, the Luzon leg, will be participated in by 24 local designers from the National Capital Region and various provinces in Luzon, including Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Bulacan, Batangas, Mindoro, and Laguna.

The exhibition will feature the ternos designed by the Ternocon 2025 winners and finalists, Peach Garde, Bryan Peralta, Ram Silva, and Windell Madis, with pieces by mentors Ezra Santos, Rhett Eala, and Lulu Tan Gan.

The Luzon participants will undergo intensive hands-on training on terno making with relevant lectures by experts led by Ternocon founding artistic director Gino Gonzales, Ternocon former mentor Lulu Tan Gan, Ternocon current artistic director Ricardo Eric Cruz, 2020 chief mentor awardee Abdul Gaffar, Carolina de Leon, Ternocon 2020 Bronze Medalist Dinnes Obusan, Ternocon 2025 Silver Medalist Bryan Peralta, and Ternocon 2025 Mentors’ Choice Award Windell Madis.

All workshop participants from Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon are qualified to submit proposals for the competition slated for February 2027.

When someone tells you they “own a Vida Doria,” they’re likely referring to a piece of women’s clothing bearing the fashion designer’s name—a wedding gown or formal wear, for instance, or one of her many blouses in a burst of vibrant colors and prints.

To art lovers, owning a Vida Doria means having another of her creative outputs in their possession: an oil on canvas painting of flowers or other nature-inspired scenes executed in romantic strokes and hues reminiscent of the French Impressionist Claude Monet.

Longtime collectors of her work, as well as those eager to discover this side of the designer and Binibining Pilipinas Universe 1971 winner are welcome to visit Tapestry of Woven Dreams, a group exhibition that runs from May 22 to 28 at the Atrium on the second floor of The Podium in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City.

Through this event, Vida fulfills the dream of exhibiting with her five co-members of Katha Art, a group of ladies from diverse backgrounds who share a common passion for arts and good food. Originally mentored by the late Nestor Villanueva, the ladies are now guided by Jeff Consumo.

Each will showcase a collection of 15 to 20 paintings, making the event a visual treat of colors, styles, and themes. In turn, Vida and the other featured artists will be contributing to making others’ dreams come true too. A portion from the proceeds of their sales will go to three of the ladies’ chosen charities: Sibol Ning Aeta Foundation Inc., Mary Queen of Heavens Missionaries, and Vida’s personal pick, ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor), the non-profit founded by the Catholic family renewal community Couples for Christ, of which she is a member.

Eyeful of an exhibit

Whether you’re familiar with her works or are seeing them for the first time, you’re sure to get an eyeful from this exhibit. For one thing, the artist includes paintings on larger canvases—a request of her clients, she tells you. Then there are her colors and strokes, which have noticeably become less Monet and more Van Gogh.

“Even with his small works, his perspective is amazing. And his colors!” she gushes of the beloved Post- Impressionist Dutch painter. “He doesn’t mix two colors to get a third color. To him, if it’s red, it’s red; if it’s yellow, it’s yellow; if it’s green, it’s green. Also, when you look at his paintings, there’s so much movement, it’s like they’re swaying.”

Painting to heal, helping others heal

Indeed, emotion has always been integral to her art. Deeply affected by back-to-back deaths in her family in 2005—her brother due to cancer and their mother two months later—she took up a friend’s invitation to join a “Paint to Heal” class in Santa Maria della Strada Parish in La Vista, Quezon City. “The very first painting that I made during that session was a bouquet of flowers I titled ‘My Mom’s Bouquet,’” she says. “It’s still with me.”

That she took to painting easily in that first class didn’t come as a surprise. The fashion designer and boutique owner for five decades simply “migrated” her fashion know-how—from her penchant for bright, happy colors to her use of luxurious fabrics—onto a canvas.

Like her fashion, which has been around since the early ‘70s and continues to capture a market that’s into timeless, feminine apparel, there’s a great enthusiasm for Vida’s paintings—people just have to have them. In a previous solo show, an oil on canvas of a nature scene in autumn was purchased early by an art patron “who didn’t even haggle, not a single centavo,” she says. Turns out, other buyers had their eye on that painting too and were disappointed to know it had already been sold. In another exhibit, one guest snapped up three paintings; while others bought two each.

Perhaps people don’t just see beauty in her canvas; they see the artist’s earnestness and the purity of her intentions as well. Unknown to many, with each painting Vida sells, someone benefits.

“I have family members and friends who need chemotherapy or a PET scan, and it's so expensive,” she says. The artist has even been known to donate to strangers seeking medical assistance. “So, I pray that people like my paintings so I can help others. Miraculously, people do! Even I’m surprised.”

Over 20 years ago, Vida turned to painting to heal. Today, the wife, mom of four grown children, and grandmother to three grandkids who cheer whenever they see her, paints both for art’s sake and to help others heal.

“That’s why if you see my studio, my canvas is always ready and mounted, and my paints are open. So, when I feel like painting, I can just go,” says Vida. “I have so many things I want to paint that I don’t think I would be able to paint them all even if I had forever!”

Vida Doria-Legaspi is joined by five Katha Art featured artists including Gracie Aranda, Clarita Lazatin Magat, Bebet Pastelero Sto. Tomas, Salie Henson Naguiat, and Rellie Liwag. The Tapestry of Woven Dreams exhibit runs from May 22 to 28 at the Atrium of The Podium in Ortigas Center.

How to keep sunburn, acne, and fungal infections at bay

Common sun-related skin conditions include sunburn, acne, and fungal infection.

With over 7,600 islands teeming with breathtaking beaches and dive sites that rival the best in the world, the Philippines is truly a summer lover’s paradise. When they’re not swimming, snorkeling, or building sandcastles on the shore, local and foreign tourists are most likely tanning, soaking in the sun’s rays for hours to get that perfectly bronzed shade.

Achieving that sun-kissed glow comes with a price to your health, says Ma. Margarita Isabel Carlos- Tanchiong, MD, at top hospital in the Philippines, Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), “That tan on your skin is a sunburn. It may look nice, but it also damages your skin. The intense heat and humidity can also lead to frustrating skin issues like acne and fungal infections.”

Do not let the sun spoil your summer days. MakatiMed cites common sun-related skin conditions and what to do about them.

A bad sunburn. Too much sun exposure doesn’t just tan your skin; it can cause it to flake and peel or develop painful blisters.

“If this happens, get out of the sun immediately and stay in a cool room, or bathe in cool water,” reminds Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong. “Gently apply aloe vera or a ceramide-containing lotion or moisturizer, and do not pop the blisters. Take a pain reliever to ease the sting of the burn. You may also need topical and oral medications to treat the sunburn.”

Next time you go out into the sun, prepare by slathering a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. “Re-apply to your face and exposed skin every two hours, especially if you’ve been swimming or sweating. Don’t forget to include your ears and the back of your neck. Wearing sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and choosing clothing made with Ultraviolet Protection are helpful tips to keep your skin protected from further ultraviolet damage. It is also best to stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm. That’s when the UV rays are strongest, causing the most skin damage.”

Acne. The heat and humidity of the Philippine summers make us sweat more than usual. This causes an overproduction of sebum (oil) on the face, which clogs our skin’s pores. The result? Unsightly pimples.

“Wash your face regularly with a soap-free cleanser or one that contains salicylic acid to help unclog pores,” shares Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong. “Use a sunscreen that is non-comedogenic—meaning it doesn’t cause blackheads or whiteheads—and choose gel-based and oil-free moisturizers over their creamy counterparts during the hot summer months. If the pimples are on your back or neck, wear loose, cotton clothing to stay cool.”

Fungal infection. Fungus thrives in heat and humidity, so do not be surprised if you find yourself scratching an unbearable itch from red or discolored rashes.

“Athlete’s foot develops between your toes. The rash usually presents as scaly, red patches with accompanying itch,” explains Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong. “Ringworm gets its name from its appearance as a circular rash with raised edges that spread outward. Jock itch’s rashes are found in warm, sweaty parts of the body like the groin, inner thighs, or buttocks. Areas of the body where skin folds and moisture tend to form, like under the breasts or in between layers in the tummy, are where yeast infections usually start. You’ll note the appearance of red scaly patches with satellite bumps that are usually itchy.”

Aside from keeping your skin cool and lessening friction on skin, over-the-counter and prescription anti- fungal creams are best at addressing these conditions. See your doctor, who will be able to identify them during a consultation. “To prevent infections from developing or worsening, keep those areas in your body clean and dry, wash your towels and clothing regularly, and resist the urge to scratch, or you may spread the infection,” says Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong.

For the third consecutive year, the vibrant collective Artistica PH returns with Colores de Verano 3, a group exhibition that captures the warmth, energy, and diversity of the Filipino creative spirit. Held at the LRI Pavilion on the second floor of the LRI Design Plaza along Nicanor Garcia Street (formerly Reposo Street), the exhibit runs from May 5 to May 30, 2026.

Strategically located between SM Jazz and St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, the venue offers an intimate yet dynamic setting for art lovers and collectors to engage with a wide array of works. The exhibit is open to the public from Mondays to Saturdays, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it accessible to both casual visitors and serious collectors.

The show features an eclectic mix of artworks executed in watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel, and mixed media—each piece reflecting the unique voice and technique of its creator. One of the featured artists this year is Maita Fernandez (who I'm so proud of, as she's also my second cousin), whose work adds a distinct perspective to the collective narrative. Her pieces stand alongside those of fellow Artistica PH members, forming a cohesive yet diverse visual dialogue that invites viewers to interpret themes of summer, emotion, and identity. She's honored and grateful to have her works featured in Colores de Verano 3 alongside an inspiring roster of artists and guest artist/critic Cid Reyes.

The Artists’ Reception, scheduled for the afternoon of May 9, is an invitation-only gathering that offers a more personal encounter with the artists behind the works. It serves as a space for conversation, appreciation, and deeper insight into the creative processes that shape the exhibit.

Script submissions from VLFXXI come to life through stripped-down reading performances in Staged Readings. Jose Victor Torres’ MGA TATSULOK, M. Manalastas’ THE DEVOURED, Dingdong Novenario’s MANANG, Rafael Jimenez’s SUOR, Juan Ekis’ KASAL(ANAN), and Jay Fernandez’s ANG HULI take the stage.

The VLF Writing Fellowship Program, a two-week mentorship on dramatic writing for the stage headed by award-winning playwright Glenn Sevilla Mas, culminates in a thrilling showcase. FRUITS AND RELISHES

Relishes and desserts are mostly the preferred mediums for food art since they can be prepared in advance, offering more time for creating designs. A good example is achara, it’s a pickle relish made of grated unripe papaya and other vegetables like cucumber and bell pepper. Its textures and colors are ideal for carving various shapes, figures, and even small scenes, which are then arranged in glass jars to create decorative displays. The natural colors of the ingredients provide many ways for them to express their artistry through arranging these relishes.

Mayumo, the Pampango word for sweet, is a food art from San Miguel de Mayumo in Bulacan.

They preserve different kinds of fruits, mainly suha (pomelo), dayap (lime), kundol (wax gourd), etc. They are carved with decorative patterns before being put in jars for display.

In some provinces, like Laguna, creativity is shown differently, such as stuffing limes with coconut jelly, adding both visual and textural contrast to the dessert.

KAKANIN

The arrangements and packaging of kakanin is another medium for food art. One of the most popular ways of arranging kakanin is by serving it in bilao (flat baskets) which highlights its patterns and colorful visuals. Puto and kutsinta, for instance, are steamed in bamboo tubes or molds, made in different sizes and colors, and arranged in bilao when served.

Other kakanin like suman, ibus, tupig, tamales, and puso also highlight the creativity of wrapping using materials such as coconut fronds, banana leaves, and nipa leaves. For example, suman sa ibus is mostly wrapped in pale young coconut fronds, while in Obando, Bulacan, darker fronds are woven into small triangular baskets.

Tupig from Ilocos is both decorative and practical, commonly enjoyed during holidays or cockpits. In Cebu and Cagayan de Oro, they have puso also known as “hanging rice” encased in woven coconut leaves shaped into portable pouches, with various regional names like balisungsong, lambay, patupat, and tamu.

PASTILLAS

The famous pastillas de leche, sweets made from carabao milk and sugar from San Miguel de Mayumo, are also known for its pabalat (wrappings), made of multicolored thin paper, called papel de japon. They are cut into stars, leaves, flowers, palm leaves and branches, letters and other designs.

Pabalat artist Luz Mendoza Ocampo uses patterns she personally designed, such as the so-called Maria Clara motif, tinikling, pounding rice grains, nipa hut, birds, and various flowers. She traces the pattern into layers of papel de hapon using a pencil, and then cuts the paper using a cuticle scissor.

Other pabalat artists prefer the freestyle method without using any patterns or drawings by cutting a folded paper freehand. The pabalat tradition in Bulacan is usually practiced by women. Well-known pabalat artists are Amparo Pengson, Rosa David, Nene Pineda, Luz Reyes, and Teresita Ramos.

COOKIES AND BREADS

In Pampanga, during feast day of San Nicolas, cookies designed in his iconography are sold outside churches. Meanwhile, in Bago City, Negros Occidental, alfajor cookies are also popular amongst migrant families from Panay who settled there in the 1920s. The cookies are made of rice flour and sugar then pressed into wooden molds showcasing various designs including symbols like USAFFE and Boy Scouts insignias, flowers, etc. They are typically cooked by being sun-dried.

Breads also serve as an ideal medium for creative food art. In Silay, Negros Occidental, empanadas are meticulously fluted in a milles feuilles style, while in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, panaras are crafted with pinched edges and distinctive patterns. The shaping of tortas reales and castillos, sweets influenced by Spanish heritage, continues alongside more modern cake decorations inspired by American traditions. In Antipolo, Rizal, one bakery is popular for making bread into playful shapes, including lobsters, pigs, turtles, and crocodiles, showcasing a unique form of food artistry.

Its official term is micturition, but to us, it’s simply urinating or peeing, a natural and necessary function of a healthy human body. “Urination helps cleanse the body of toxins, excess sodium and fluid, and metabolic waste,” says Rolando Guillermo O. Saulog, MD, a Urology Doctor at top hospital in the Philippines, Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed).

On average, a person pees between 6 to 7 times a day, but if you are taking more (or less) trips to the bathroom, there’s no real need to worry. “If you go only four times in a 24-hour span, it is fine. And if you go 10 times, that’s okay too.”

According to Dr. Saulog, the number of times you urinate per day depends on the following factors:

Age. “As we grow older, our bladder (which stores urine) does not expand as much, so it fills up faster, making our visits to the bathroom more frequent. Menopause and the decreasing production of the estrogen hormone can also affect bladder function.”

What and how much you drink. “Alcohol and caffeine are forms of diuretics, which prompt the kidneys to release extra fluid from the blood vessels. Consume copious amounts of coffee, tea, beer, or wine, and you can expect to spend a lot of time in the toilet.”

Pregnancy. “Mothers-to-be can chalk up peeing often to hormonal changes (an increase of progesterone relaxes the muscles, including those in the bladder), extra fluid and blood produced by the body, and weakened pelvic floor muscles due to an expanding uterus.”

Specific medical conditions. “If you need to urinate often, only yield small amounts each time, you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Diabetes can also cause you to urinate frequently, as it is the body’s way of emptying the bloodstream of excess sugar. Low potassium, too much or too little calcium, an enlarged prostate, congestive heart failure, painful bladder syndrome, and kidney issues can also make you visit the bathroom several times.”

Medicines. “Diuretics in pill form are given to individuals with high blood pressure, heart failure, edema, kidney disease, and liver disease. Certain medicines for diabetes and mental health can also make you pee more than average.”

Bladder size. “A man’s bladder can hold as much as 700 ml of urine, while a woman’s bladder can store about 500 ml.”

On the flip side, MakatiMed says that oliguria or urinating only 1-2 times in 24 hours (that’s peeing less than 400-500 ml a day) could be due to dehydration, blockages in the urinary tract, or infection.

When should you see your doctor? “Definitely when your peeing includes pain or a burning sensation, or when pain is felt in your lower back, pelvis, or genitals,” says Dr. Saulog. “Blood in the urine is also a cause for concern, as is incontinence or difficulty controlling your pee.”

Other signs that a consultation with a health practitioner is in order: urine that is cloudy, dark, and foul- smelling.

Tests help pinpoint the cause of your tendency to pee often or not enough. Results from a urinalysis will give your doctor an idea of the color, appearance, and microscopic contents of your sample. A kidney functioning test, which relies on a blood test and urine sample, can gauge how well your kidneys are working. Imaging tests (x-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT scan) will reveal if peeing too much or too little comes from a pre-existing or newly discovered medical condition. A uroflowmetry test (available in MakatiMed) is a simple, non-invasive test used to evaluate how the bladder is working, often to detect why a patient has frequent or urge to urinate, a weak or slow urinary stream, difficulty starting urination, or a feeling that the bladder is not empty after urinating.

“Healthy living ensures efficient and natural urination,” reminds Dr. Saulog. “Stay hydrated. Eat fruits and vegetables and foods rich in probiotics; they may help address recurring UTI. Avoid too much caffeine and alcohol. Pee and cleanse using an unscented soap after sexual intercourse to lower your risk of developing UTI. Women can also reduce the risk of UTI by wiping from front to back after peeing.”

“Most important: Do not hold back your pee. Go when you feel like it.”

As part of its annual Global Month of Good celebration, Starbucks Philippines is reinforcing its commitment to the communities it serves – while inviting more Filipinos to take part in their own way.

This year, Starbucks highlights a simple but powerful idea: anyone can be a Community Champion through small, everyday actions that create meaningful change for the environment, the community, and other people.

“Our local initiatives are grounded in the belief that meaningful change starts with strong community connections,” said Jamie Silva, senior manager for Marketing, Digital Customer Experience and Social Impact, Starbucks Philippines. “From education to disaster response initiatives and partner volunteerism, 2025 reflects how collective action can create lasting impact.”

In 2026, Starbucks Philippines is expanding its community impact initiatives through strengthened partnerships, improved access to essentials, and more opportunities for both partners (employees) and customers to take part in meaningful action.

Supporting Communities Where They Need the Most

Through its partnership with Planet Water Foundation and The Starbucks Foundation, Starbucks Philippines provides clean water access and hygiene education to an estimated 42,400 people in various regions around the country. This April, a ninth AquaTower will be installed in Camarines Sur, extending access to safe drinking to around 7,000 more individuals.

Starbucks Philippines also continues its longstanding partnership with HOPE to support education. Each year, Starbucks partners (employees) come together to help build safe and inspiring learning spaces for underserved communities. This year marks the completion of a sixth public school classroom in Sarangani in April, helping provide safe and conducive learning spaces for students in the community.

Alongside its community initiatives, Starbucks Philippines is also strengthening its sustainability efforts within its store operations. Starbucks Philippines has partnered with MPower to supply electricity to around 60 Metro Manila stores under the Retail Aggregation Program. This partnership is expected to result in improved operational efficiency while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

Continuing Efforts Powered by Volunteerism

Starbucks’ commitment to being a Community Champion is also reflected through volunteerism and everyday participation.

Starbucks Community Stores in Abad Santos, Tondo, and Maysilo Circle continue to support education programs in partnership with AHA! Learning Center, Young Focus Foundation, and Mano Amiga Philippines. To date, more than 1,500 learners have benefited from after-school sessions, literacy development activities, and leadership-building programs that help them gain confidence and stay engaged in school.

Addressing food insecurity remains a key focus. Through its FoodShare program, Starbucks has redirected nearly 3 million rescuable food items from close to 300 stores nationwide. In partnership with The Philippine Food Bank Foundation and Grab Philippines, surplus food is distributed to various communities.

Beyond these organized programs, Starbucks encourages customers to take part in simple, everyday actions throughout Global Month of Good. In their own small way, store visits can become part of the impact. Customers can use for-here ware or bring their own tumblers for their coffee orders and enjoy a PHP 10 discount.
