Visual activist Zanele Muholi and journalist Lerato Dumse visited Pittsburgh last week to exhibit in the CI:13 Carnegie International and Q&B was lucky enough to be in the mix. As we showed them around town and traded stories about South Africa and the ‘burgh we learned more about Zanele’s Faces & Phases series and Inkanyiso Queer Media. And she plays for us too! Kelly’s been holding it down in the ‘burgh for over 20 years and is one of the city’s finest Djembe players. We were so excited to sit down with her recently during the Rhinestone Steel Queer Music Festival to hear all about her rich experiences with the drum. And as an added bonus, you’ll also hear in the background Cuban-American, queer, lady-punk artist and writer Cristy C. Road’s lively performance. So get ready internets, this one’s about West African drums and the politics of gender, right here on Q&B!

Briizy was suggested to us as a guest by our friend, Vanessa German, and we had a blast spending time with him! He is a bus connoisseur, loves Trina, his family, and making art. Currently, he’s a junior in college and interning at Gaylife Television– which we had not heard of, so thank you for sharing that with us (we’re still not 100% sure what it is but are linking to it for anyone interested).
