How to Remove Cutlery Marks from Plates (Clean Dishes!)

If your ceramic plates, stoneware, or porcelain plates have those annoying gray marks or black marks that won’t come off, you’re not alone.

I used to think these were scratches ruining my dinner plates. Turns out, they’re not actual metal scratches. They’re gray scuff marks left behind by metal cutlery rubbing against the dish surface.

And the good news? You can remove them with very little effort!

What Causes Gray Marks on Plates?

Those gray scratches or knife marks you see on ceramic dishes are usually caused by:

stainless steel utensils
light utensil marks from everyday use
mineral deposits or residue sitting on the dish surface

It’s especially noticeable on lighter ceramic plates and porcelain plates, where even light scuffs show up quickly.

The Easiest Way to Remove Cutlery Marks

After trying everything from baking soda paste, to Bar Keepers Friend, to lemon juice, I finally found what works best with a little bit of effort.

What you need:

a soft cloth or microfibre cloth
a small amount of The Pink Stuff cleaning paste
warm water

Step-by-step:

Add a little bit of the cleaning paste to your cloth
Gently rub the gray marks using a circular motion
You’ll see the marks lift almost immediately
Rinse with warm water and a bit of dish soap

That’s it!

No soaking for 10–15 minutes. No harsh chemicals. No scrubbing with tons of elbow grease.

Why The Pink Stuff Works

I’ve tried a lot of different methods over the years, from baking soda paste to Bar Keepers Friend, and most of them either took too long or required way more elbow grease than I wanted.

If you have time and baking soda in your cupboard, by all means, try that method first. But if you're in a rush, need your dishes clean for an unexpected guest or your next family gathering, you'll want to try this easy and quick method.

4. Bar Keepers Friend Powder Cleanser

Make sure you are using the powder cleanser and not the liquid cleanser. Mix some of the powder cleanser with a little water to create a cleaning paste. Cover the marked areas with the paste and let sit for a few minutes. Use a soft cloth and apply in a circular motion. Rinse off with warm water.

What Doesn’t Work as Well

From experience, these either take too long or require too much effort:

dish soap alone (won’t remove metal residue)
soaking in warm water
trying to scrub with just a soft cloth

These options may help with hard water or tomato sauce stains, but not with gray marks from metal cutlery.

One of my favourite things in our home during winter is the window seat. Small and compact, this bathroom has been virtually untouched since we had this cottage built nine years ago. Sadly, our main bedroom wasn't quite feeling that way. We had renovated the room in 2018 but now the walls were feeling too creamy and we had grown tired of the trendy wallpaper accent wall.

So I pulled out my paint chips, picked a few key pieces from Wayfair Canada, and put together a design for a calm, dreamy retreat that is all about blending functionality, comfort, and beautiful design details that felt more like us.

Over the years, I've learned that we're not the type to decorate with bold or bright colors so our main bedroom had to be an oasis of calm. These neutral colors have a similar effect to white space—they visually expand the square footage and give your room an airy feel.

Picking a paint for our bedroom in particular though was challenging, as the main wall curves into the ceiling and there is no obvious place to stop and start ceiling paint. Our solution was to find a colour we could use on every surface.

I settled on Palest Pistachio 2122-60 by Benjamin Moore. As the name implies, it's a bright off-white, with a barely-there hint of pale blue-green. We "color drenched" the room in this hue, using the Ulti-Matte Sheen on the walls, ceiling, and trim. Using a single paint color makes the 12'x10' room feel much more expansive and bright.

Pro tip: Consider any architectural features you want to enhance or hide with your paint. Do you want to draw the eye upwards with ceiling beams and a boldly painted vaulted ceiling? If you want an accent wall, instead of high contrast combinations, consider wood paneling or a deeper tone of your main color for visual interest without overwhelming the space.

2. Choose Coordinated Bedding with Throw Pillows That Pop

Bedding is where color scheme and texture meet. It often makes the biggest statement in the room so I tend to choose this item first.

We had this full-length mirror casually sitting on the floor but I decided to move it and place it across from the window to take advantage of natural light. Hanging it on the wall also keeps the floor free and makes our small bedroom feel much larger.

I loved the gold mirror we placed in our entry so much that I bought another to hang above my makeup vanity. The brushed gold finish echoes the gold legs of the vanity and the ceiling pendent and adds another layer of shine.

Art is where your modern bedroom style can truly shine, and I could not be more in love with the art I've used in this room.

Do you have a problem area in your home that you can never get to feel quite right? Finding the perfect solution for our small entryway has been an ongoing challenge. Over the years, I’ve tried multiple entryway furniture solutions, hoping to balance storage, aesthetics, and practicality.

As the first space you see when you enter our home, our narrow entryway needed a stylish storage solution that could accommodate our everyday essentials without overwhelming the space. Happily, I think I've finally found the perfect answer!

Small Entryway Decor

In case you're struggling with what to put in your small entryway, this post will outline some of the things to consider when selecting entryway furniture. Find out why I think this solid wood and MDF bedside table from Wayfair Canada (that I had already purchased twice before for other rooms in our home!) paired with a large mirror and a washable runner is key to creating a highly functional and beautifully inviting atmosphere.

Struggling With Small Entryway Storage Ideas

Like our previous home, this home is short on space near the front door. There's no place to sit and put on your shoes. The closet is narrow with barely enough space for our coats and shoes. And with a centre hall plan, the entryway is a constant traffic zone leading to the dining room, living room, kitchen and upper floor.

But we had this tight little corner that would provide just enough space for a small entryway cabinet. My first attempt at a solution was a storage cabinet with three deep drawers. It seemed like a great option, but it was a little too low and the drawers were too deep. Small items like keys, sunglasses, and mail would get lost, making it more frustrating than useful. It had ample storage, but the lack of organization within the drawers made it impractical for a space that needed quick access to essentials.

Next, I tried a narrow entryway cabinet designed specifically for shoe storage. While it seemed like a great idea in theory, it was too small and narrow and it didn’t provide enough space for everyday use. It simply didn’t fit the space in a way that felt intentional or stylish.

Lastly, I tried this bow-front cabinet I purchased on Facebook Marketplace. I loved the idea of introducing something vintage-looking to fit our traditional home... but after just a few days of frustration at the drawers which constantly stuck, ring handles that wouldn't sit properly, and the general wobbliness of the cabinet on our tile floor, I lost all enthusiasm for this cabinet. I didn't have a better solution so we've lived with this cabinet for the last year.

A Bedside Table With Drawers

After those frustrating experiences, it finally occurred to me to turn to the piece I had used successfully in our daughter's room and guest bedroom before: this bedside table from Wayfair Canada. Do you prefer pegs or hooks for visible storage, or drawers and cabinets to keep things tucked away?
Does your entryway need shoe storage or a place to sit?
How much room do you have? Can you fit only a hall trees or is there space for a narrow console table?

Along with storage, we needed a few key accessories to really make most of our entry. Here's my top picks for a functional entryway:

Large Mirror

A must-have for small spaces, a mirror helps reflect light and makes the area feel more open. It’s also practical for last-minute outfit checks before heading out the door.

I chose this particular mirror for it's classic yet modern good looks. Our previous federal mirror was interesting but too small for the space. The sleek design and brushed gold finish of this large mirror works with any decor style, while the rounded corners give it a uniqueness that stands out.

Washable Runner

Entryways see a lot of foot traffic and our previous rug, while durable, was looking dingy and permanently stained. Having a washable runner would make keeping this space clean and stylish so much easier.

I decided on this cream and beige runner to bring lightness to the entryway. It works wonderfully with the jute and cotton rug in our adjacent dining room. The rounded corners of the runner are reminiscent of the rounded corners of the mirror and feel updated.

Placed on the open shelf, a woven basket provides extra storage and quick access to seasonal accessories like hats and scarves. These items can also get damp from snow or rain so the basket allows air to circulate and dry these items in the open.

Take a tour of our Christmas living room and see five timeless holiday decorating ideas to add cozy comfort to your traditional home.

When it comes to decorating for the holiday season, I decided to take things easy this year. Don't get me wrong - I always enjoy putting up the Christmas decorations and making my traditional home a cozy haven. But to be honest, 2024 felt a little heavy and I didn't quite have the heart to decorate the whole house like I've done in previous years.

So I focused on just one. I'll think you'll agree that creating a classic and cozy living room was enough to get us in the holiday spirit.

Traditional Christmas Living Room Decorations

My holiday decor always tends to focus on timeless, classic accents that bring a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Whether you have a small living room or a grand space, you can create a beautiful gathering space for family and friends the easy way with a few simple elements.

These five elements are the ones I repeat year after year and are my favourite ways to bring festive cheer to our main living area.

1. Fireplace Mantel Garland

Let's start with the focal point of the room, the fireplace mantel. In our own home, standing at the front door, the fireplace beckons you in. Even if you have a large tree in your living room, I'd argue that the fireplace will still be the center of attention. There is nothing like a roaring fire and a garland of faux or fresh greenery to make you feel instantly cozy at this time of year.

The past couple of years I've relied on this trick: layering two different garlands and scalloping them along the front of the mantel. You can see this post for tips on how to hang a garland on a mantel. Using a combination of garlands allows you to combine textures and give your garland fullness.

SHOP THE LIVING ROOM:

In the past, I've used Norfolk pine, cedar garlands and magnolia garlands for my mantel. You can combine your garlands with natural greenery, accent sprays, beads, and branches for a look that is organic and elegant.

The garland is also the perfect place to showcase your color scheme. This year, I've gone with a mix of natural materials like pine cones and wood beads, the prettiest French blue satin ribbons, and white and gold ornaments and accents. Chat GPT calls this look "French Alpine Noel" which I think is just lovely and apropos! Of course, furry mukluks and twinkling lights are a must and the cable knit stockings make an appearance every year.

2. Cozy Seating Area

One of my favourite ways to create coziness in large spaces is to make sure there's a corner or seating area that is so inviting, you can't help but plop yourself down. The window seat in our living room does just that, but you can create a cozy corner with an armchair, a sofa, or even ottomans.

The key is to combine warmth, comfort, and convenience in one spot:

Provide a throw blanket that can be tossed on your legs, wrapped around you, or cover you up for those chilly nights.
Have a place nearby to put down your book or hot cocoa. This can be an accent or side table or the coffee table.
Ensure comfort and encourage lounging by having plump cushions to sit or lean back on. I've been using these pillow inserts for the last decade and just change the pillow covers to match my seasonal decor.
Provide ample light, either natural light or with lamps, sconces, and other light sources. Our living room windows allow our window seat to bask in the crisp December light. At night, the bookcase sconces and tea lights provide ambient glow.

If you can, decorate the seating area to add that extra special feeling. Here, I've framed the window with antique sleigh bells, one of my best thrift store finds, a garland, and simple ribbon.

3. The Christmas Tree

Do you use a real tree or an artificial tree? I love the convenience and no-mess nature of an artificial tree. Even if yours is a small tree and you don't have high ceilings, you can still create a classic Christmas tree. I do love a flocked white Christmas tree but Over the years, I've discovered a bit of a "recipe" to doing so.

First, start with a high quality tree. Chances are you'll have your tree for a decade or more so buy the best one money can buy.
Then wrap it with your Christmas lights. White lights are a classic and will go with any decorating scheme, from traditional Christmas colors to trendy baubles and ornaments.
Add something white. White is a perfect way to bring snowy magic to a green tree. I've added a white berry garland I've had for years (and can't even remember where I bought it!) and white ornaments - ceramic pinecones, faux fur balls large and small, and snowflakes
Sprinkle the tree with ornaments. Add ornaments large and small, old and new ornaments, store-bought or handmade. Enhance your Christmas theme with decorations that match your colour scheme.
Bring in the accessories. These smaller accents like beautiful ribbon or clip-on candles add a final finishing touch that can really elevate your tree. Tie satin or velvet ribbon bows on the top or branches for a current, trending look.
Coordinate your gift wrap. One of my favorite ways to enhance the tree is to use gift wrap that matches your holiday decor. A pile of coordinated gifts against the tree collar is a lovely sight to see on Christmas morning!

4. Accent Lights

One of the holiday decorating ideas that has a great impact is incorporating different sources of lighting. While typical everyday lighting in your living room or family room consists of overhead lighting or table lamps, you can bring in a few new things to create ambiance and set a festive mood.

Consider different lighting options scattered throughout the room. These lights help set the mood and provide light for those early dark winter afternoons:

- real or faux battery operated candlesticks. These look great clustered on a mantel

- rechargeable tea lights. I bought this set of tea lights with remote control and they are a game changer! I no longer have to walk around the room each night and switch them off as I used to with battery operated lights. Pair them with clear or mercury glass trees for an elegant and wintry look

- battery operated lanterns. I love that there are so many lanterns out on the market now - you can easily find lanterns to suit your holiday style. Large and shiny chrome lanterns look great on the fireplace hearth. Smaller lanterns can be placed on a console table or on a bookcase

5. Cozy Textiles

Don't have a fireplace in your living room? You can still create a cozy mood with soft, textured textiles. Throw pillows and cozy blankets can be placed on every sofa or chair to make it more welcoming for guests. You can also consider wrapping the seat of your chair or sofa with a blanket. This not only changes up your every day look, but makes the seating more comfortable (and stain resistant!).

I also like this fun idea: wrap a soft scarf around any of your figurines for a whimsical touch.

Lastly, another easy way to use blankets to add to that Christmas spirit is to place folded blankets or throws on a bookcase or shelf. They not only look great, but are within arm's reach for those chilly nights.

Traditional Living Room Decor

I added a few holiday touches in our formal dining room. Here's a peek!

You can see that the blue satin ribbon, gold accents, and blue and white jars that I used in the living room make an appearance here too. These simple accessories work well with the vintage mirror and white sideboard we already had in the space.

Festive and elegant, the gold trees and paper house create a delightful vignette against the floral wallpaper. The faux greenery brings a touch of nature to this formal space.

Visiting Japan for the first time? This three-week itinerary is designed to make the journey as enjoyable as possible for you and your family. Whether you're a couple or a family with teenagers, this itinerary strikes the perfect balance between culture, adventure, and relaxation.

Japan has an undeniable appeal for many travellers and planning that first trip can feel overwhelming. This country has sat on my bucket list for a very long time and I wanted to get it just right and create the perfect adventure for me, my husband and teenage daughter. Japan offers a magical blend of futuristic cities, ancient temples, and serene landscapes, making it ideal for those us seeking culture, food, and exploration.

Japan Itinerary

I wanted to tailor this guide for others just like me: first-time visitors who enjoy travel but appreciate planning and organizing their own trip. If you're looking for mid-priced accommodations—not too budget or luxury—and want to experience Japan’s highlights without falling into tourist traps, I have you covered.

This three-week Japan itinerary includes iconic destinations like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, with side trips to Hiroshima and Miyajima, and Hakone which are well worth seeing. Plus, I've included some insider tips that will help your vacation go smoother! Tip #1: buy some comfortable shoes. You'll need them for this trip!

I do like a busy vacation schedule. If you prefer a slower pace, feel free to adjust the itinerary by excluding activities or adding in rest days to suit your needs!

But before you plan your Japan trip, consider these questions:

How Long Should You Stay In Japan As A Tourist?

When deciding how long to stay in Japan, it depends on how much you want to explore.

A one week trip is enough if you’re focusing solely on Tokyo, allowing time to enjoy the city's highlights without rushing.
If you want to visit multiple cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, you’ll need at least 10 to 14 days to cover the essentials and truly experience each destination while allowing for travel time.
For a more relaxed Japan trip, including four or more cities like Hiroshima, Nara, or Hakone, plan for 18 to 21 days, giving you ample time to enjoy the best places without feeling rushed

Our 18 day trip was a good amount of time for us to see the best things in Japan while enjoying authentic, meaningful experiences as a family. We split our Japan itinerary like so:

3 nights in Tokyo
2 nights in Hakone
2 nights in Osaka
1 night in Hiroshima with a day trip to Miyajima
4 nights in Kyoto
5 nights in Tokyo
1 day travel home

Had we a bit more extra time, I would have added a night in Miyajima and one more night in Osaka. I didn't feel like we missed anything though and I loved that we alternated between bustling major cities and quieter smaller towns (that was intentional!).

When Should You Visit Japan?

Japan has so much to offer that you could visit any time of year and find something to do. If you want to see the cherry blossoms, plan your trip from late March throughout the month of April. To see the vibrant fall colors, plan on vacationing from late October to late November. The colours peak in mid November.

Our trip took place in the month of July, the only time we could visit because of school schedules. I've read all the Reddit threads warning that July and August are the worst months to visit because of the unbearable heat and I've come through on the other side to tell you... it IS hot but bearable with some preparation!

Just bring your own hot-weather travel essentials: a portable fan, cooling towel, drink lots of water or Pocari Sweat, and grab a UV-umbrella and stylish face towel while you're there (I grabbed a super cute one at the shops at Fushimi Inari Shrine!). And be sure to dress for the weather!

Getting Around

Japanese transportation systems are remarkably efficient and logical. After 2 or 3 days, and relying solely on Google Maps, you will get the hang of the public transportation system and get to your destination easily.

The lines and platforms are well marked with most signs in English, and Google Maps is precise, telling you which specific subway cars to board on and displaying arrival times to the exact minute.

We mostly travelled on foot or by subway, and took Shinkansen (high speed trains) between cities. Taxis are plentiful, safe, and convenient. If your driver doesn't speak English, just show them the Google Map address in Japanese, or use this handy translation feature on your iphone.

In terms of reservations, I recommend:

booking Shinkansen tickets 1-2 days ahead from the terminals in the stations
booking accommodations on Booking.com 3-4 months in advance
booking tickets for sell-out attractions through Klook. We also used Klook for attractions like TeamLab Planets which don't accept North American credit cards on their website, and for purchasing tickets to Tokyo DisneySea (the Tokyo Disney website is notorious for being confusing, even when translated to English)

You'll need data when using Google Maps and sites. I recommend purchasing an Airalo e-SIM (digital SIM card) so you can stay connected and avoid high roaming rates. 5GB-10GB should be sufficient for two to three week trip.

Do They Speak English In Japan?

Unlike travel to Europe where English is widely spoken, I find travel to Asia in general is a bit more challenging because of the language barrier. As a first-time visitor, this is something you are no doubt worried about. I was too but I had taken some lessons on Duolingo and Buusu, watched some YouTube videos, and landed in Japan knowing maybe 10 conversational phrases. It was more than enough to get by!

You'll find that most employees at hotels, tourist attractions, and retail shops will know some English. Restaurants will often have plastic food on display and English menus available so you know what you're ordering. Directional signs are often displayed in Japanese and English, and on buses and subways, you will hear announcements in Japanese and English as well.

Occasionally you'll need to use Google Translate on your phone to translate a Japanese menu or talk with a taxi driver or restaurant employee who doesn't speak English. But those instances are rare, especially in the larger cities.

📌 TIP: Researching your transportation ahead of time can save you confusion and minimize language challenges.

What I would encourage you to do though is research all of your transportation needs ahead of time. Knowing where and how to buy your tickets, reading train schedules and routes ahead of time, and generally understanding how to get from one destination to the next will save you a lot of time and confusion.

Those kind of in depth, detailed conversations, where you're trying to communicate your needs to the ticket agent, are harder to have if you don't speak the language.

But don't let any of that dissuade you. The Japanese people are helpful and accustomed to having tourists from all over the world.

Week 1: Tokyo and Hakone Adventures

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo

After a long flight, the first thing you’ll want is a smooth transition from the airport to your hotel, so let’s start with some transportation tips. We flew into Narita Airport and took the Narita Express (N'EX). It will take you directly to central Tokyo in about an hour, with stops in Shinjuku (where we were staying) and Shibuya, two of the city's most convenient areas to stay in. Get a ticket for the N'EX online or at the JR East Travel Center in the airport terminal.

You can also pick up a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) if you need one, and a Suica card at the JR East Travel Center. It's a good idea to get a Suica card on your first day.

The Suica card is a prepaid rechargeable contactless smart card that you can just tap to pay fares for train lines, subways, and can also be used as payment in some convenience stores. If you have an iPhone, you can also load a digital Suica card instead. Pasmo card is another card that operates the same as Suica.

Where To Stay In Tokyo

For your stay, consider booking a hotel in Shinjuku, Shibuya or Ginza. Shinjuku and Shibuya are both vibrant areas packed with restaurants, shopping, and easy access to Tokyo's top sights. Ginza offers higher end accommodations and walking distance to flagship stores of top brands from Uniqlo to Gucci.

Dealing with jet lag and time change, I always like to have a bit of comfort and familiarity on my first night so we stayed at the Hilton Tokyo. It was conveniently located with beautiful city views and a short walk to the subway.

📌 TIP: Note that when booking a hotel in Japan, "child" implies they will share the bed with you. We booked our Hilton hotel for two adults and one child (our 15 year old) and found there was only one queen bed in the room. Not a big issue - the roll-away bed we added was heavenly!

Day 2: Tokyo - Explore Shinjuku

First time visitors should absolutely start their first full day with a visit to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. The free panoramic views are stunning and a wonderful way to be welcomed to Tokyo, the largest city in the world.

From there, hop on the subway at Shinjuku Station to the Asakusa District. I'll be honest - Shinjuku Station is massive and intimidating. It is one of the world’s busiest train stations, handling over 3.6 million passengers a day!!

The Asakusa Tourist Information Centre offers fantastic views of the area, including the iconic Senso-ji buddhist temple and Tokyo Skytree. Take a stroll down lively Nakamise Shopping Street before reaching Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple. Don’t forget to follow temple etiquette, like bowing and purifying your hands at the entrance. For lunch, stop at Kura Sushi Asakusa, an authentic conveyor belt sushi spot where you can grab fresh plates as they pass by.

From there, you can walk to Kappabashi, Tokyo's kitchenware district, where stores offer beautiful Japanese cooking tools and high-quality knives. A quick subway back to the hotel leaves you time in the evening to explore Shinjuku. The famous 3D cat billboard, Godzilla head, and narrow streets of Omoide Yokocho are definitely worth seeing.

Day 3: Tokyo - Shibuya & Harajuku

Begin this day at Meiji Shrine, a tranquil oasis and Shinto shrine in the heart of Shibuya. The stroll through the peaceful grounds and seeing the traditional Shinto architecture was one of my favourite experiences.

Next, take a short walk to Harajuku’s Takeshita Street, known for its vibrant fashion and unique shops. It's a great place to find vintage clothing, affordable finds, and delicious sweet treats. Nearby Tokyu Plaza Omotesando is the main street to admire striking Japanese modern architecture.

Finally, make your way to Shibuya Scramble Crossing, one of Tokyo’s most iconic sights. Early evening is the best time to enjoy the famous Shibuya Crossing and lively atmosphere of the surrounding district.

📌 TIP: For fast, inexpensive, and easy ready-to-eat meals, visit the hot counter in most convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawsons, Family Mart) or the "Depachika" food halls found in the basement of Tokyo's large department stores.

Day 4: Tokyo to Hakone

After a busy few days in Tokyo, you can find respite in Hakone, a picturesque hot spring resort town known for its stunning natural landscapes including views of Mount Fuji. Hakone's relaxing hot springs and cultural attractions are the perfect place to rejuvenate and spend some time in nature.

Travel by Romancecar from Tokyo to Hakone, enjoying the quick glimpse of Mt Fuji along the route (be sure to sit on the right side of the train for the best view!) For discounted travel, make use of the Hakone Free Pass, which provides access to various attractions and transportation options.

📌 TIP: Pick up your Romancecar ticket and Hakone Free Pass a day or two prior at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center in Shinjuku Station.

Every minute counts when you're travelling. If you don't have much time to go to your hotel, take advantage of the stress-free luggage delivery service at Hakone-Yumoto station. We had them transfer our carry-on luggage directly to the Hakone Hotel Kowaki-en which left us free to go sightsee.

The Hotel Kowaki-en is a stunning, newly renovated hotel. I loved the traditional Japanese pajamas and slippers (everyone wore them to dinner and breakfast), the ample buffet with Western and Japanese food options, and free access to the Yunessun Hot Springs Park next door.

Your memorable experience in Hakone starts with taking the switchback Hakone Tozan Train to Gora Station. Known as the "Hydrangea Train", July is the perfect time to see the sides of the tracks blooming with colourful hydrangeas.

After a quick stop at Hakone No Mori for the fluffiest pancakes, you are ready to explore Hakone Gora Park with its beautiful gardens and tranquil atmosphere. Be sure to check out cultural activities like the tea ceremony or glass bead blowing. Our teenager absolutely loved this activity and it was a a fun way to make a unique souvenir.

Lastly, don't miss the Hakone Open Air Museum. I was blown away the Picasso museum and the impressive sculptures, all set in a spectacular outdoor setting.

Day 5: Hakone: Ropeway, Cruise, and Shrine Visit

A trip to Hakone wouldn't be complete without a ride on the cable cars of the Hakone Ropeway from Sounzan Station to Owakudani, an active volcanic valley known for its sulfur vents and hot springs. There you can try the famous black eggs (Kuro-tamago), which are boiled in the sulfuric hot springs and believed to add seven years to your life, or black ice cream if you're not as adventurous.

Torrential rains forced us to abandon our afternoon plans which included a scenic Hakone Sightseeing Cruise across Lake Ashi which offers breathtaking views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Disembarking at Motohakone, our plan was to visit Hakone-jinja Shrine and stop to take photos at the Heiwa no Torii, the red gate that stands in the lake.

Luckily, Hakone is an onsen town and you can find many options to enjoy the area's natural hot springs, even on rainy days. We booked a private onsen at Hakone Hotel Kowaki-en, and it turned out to be an experience I will always remember.

Day 6: Hakone To Osaka

From Hakone, make your way to the bustling big city of Osaka. Our stay at Mimaru Osaka Shinsaibashi West was fabulous and I highly recommend staying at the Mimaru chain of apartment-style hotels. They're typically quite spacious and located near grocery stores and transportation.

Begin exploring with a long stroll down Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, a bustling covered arcade filled with trendy boutiques, souvenirs, and local shops.

In the evening, head to the Dotonbori area, famous for its bright lights (stop for a photo at Glico man!), lively atmosphere and street food, and check out the nearby Hozenji Yokocho. With its red lanterns, cobblestone paths, and the famous Hozenji temple, it offers a more traditional side of Osaka.

For a special dining experience, enjoy dinner at Matsusakagyu Yakiniku M Yokocho Branch, where you can the savor top-quality Matsusaka beef that Japan is known for grilled to perfection. Be sure to make a reservation and arrive on an empty stomach - we barely made it through the 8-course meal!

Week 2: Exploring Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyoto

Day 7: Exploring Osaka: Castles, Markets, and City Views

Start your day with a visit to the historic Osaka Castle, a symbol of the city with stunning architecture and beautiful grounds perfect for a morning stroll. Booking ahead online is highly recommended as the onsite line is very very long.

Making the trek to the top of Osaka Castle will reward you with 360° views of the city. But be warned - the elevators were not in use during our visit so we had to walk up and down eight flights of stairs!

If you're ready to eat, head to Kuromon Market, a popular spot where you can sample fresh seafood, street food, and local delicacies. Osaka is known as the kitchen of Japan and I can see why - the shrimp tempura we had there was seriously the best I've had in my life!

For breathtaking views of the city, visit the Abeno Harukas Observation Deck, the tallest skyscraper in Japan. Or, explore the lush Namba Parks which has a spectacular rooftop garden and unique shopping. Wrap up your day with a hearty bowl of Ichiran Ramen. At this popular restaurant chain, you can customize your ramen and enjoy it in a cozy, private individual booth—a must-try in Osaka!

👉🏼 Special Note: Luggage Forwarding Service for Hassle-Free Travel in Japan

If you are planning any overnight trips in your itinerary, I highly recommend making use of Japan's luggage forwarding service. Known as Takkyubin or Ta-Q-Bin, it's a convenient and reliable way to travel light between cities.

This service allows you to send your luggage from one hotel to the next or directly to the airport, freeing you from the hassle of carrying heavy bags on public transport. We used this service to transport our luggage from our hotel in Osaka to our hotel in Kyoto, while we just took an overnight bag with us from Osaka to Hiroshima in between.

You arrange for your luggage to be picked up from your hotel (confirm your hotel offers this service), and it usually arrives the next day, in 24 hours, allowing you to enjoy your trip without extra weight. We found it to be affordable (approximately $40 CAD for each of our carry-ons) and efficient!

Day 8: Osaka to Hiroshima/Miyajima: A Day of Culture and Food

Travel from Osaka to Hiroshima, then take a scenic boat ride to Miyajima Island, famous for its floating torii gate and serene atmosphere. Our day there was rainy, which only added to the ethereal atmosphere. The island has an abundance of deer you can see up-close roaming the streets, so its a good alternative to Nara Park.

There are many hotel options in Miyajima, or return to Hiroshima. We stayed at Hotel Cla-ss Hiroshima-Tokaichi, which was a fine budget friendly accommodation, but I'd opt for a hotel closer to the Peace Memorial Park. For dinner, head out to enjoy Hiroshima’s famous layered style of okonomiyaki, packed with savory ingredients.

Day 9: Hiroshima to Kyoto: History and Tradition

Start your day in Hiroshima with breakfast at Bakery Roti. They serve the most delicious French pastries and the owner is delightful! Then make your way to the solemn Hiroshima Peace Park, a moving tribute to the victims of the atomic bomb.

The Peace Memorial Museum is worthy of a visit, but I highly recommend spending time at the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. The Hall of Remembrance is incredibly moving, and along with the Atomic Bomb Dome, is something I will never forget.

Before heading to Kyoto, grab an Eki-ben (a special bento box) at the train station, perfect for enjoying while on the bullet train. Upon arrival, check in at Mimaru Kyoto Kawaramachi Gojo. Like the Mimaru hotel we stayed at in Osaka, the hotel rooms are well decorated and spacious. We loved the convenient location of this family-friendly hotel.

Spend the late afternoon exploring Shinkyogoku Shopping Street and the famous Nishiki Market, known as "Kyoto's kitchen". End your night immersed in the rich culture of the nearby historic Gion district, known for its traditional atmosphere and chance to spot a geisha strolling the lantern-lit streets.

Day 10: Kyoto Temples

Every Japan travel guide will tell you that a trip to Kyoto must include a visit to the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha. This popular destination is famous for its thousands of red torii gates that wind through the forested mountainside.

In the summer months, the paths are busy with a lot of people but grow less crowded the further up you go. Before leaving the area, we highly recommend poking into the many souvenir shops along the way. They offer lovely coin purses, fans, chopsticks, or small towels as a remembrance of your time in Japan.

📌 TIP: Japan is known for its high-quality burgers. A stop at Dragon Burger across from Fushimi Inari will reward you with absolutely the best burger you will ever have in Japan! Months later and I am still dreaming about their Yuzu burger and homemade ice tea.

Next, head to Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its grand wooden stage that offers panoramic views of Kyoto.

Be sure to leave enough time to enjoy the long walk to the temple. From Gion, it's just a few minute walk along the picturesque streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka up to Kiyomizu-zaka. The narrow street is sure to be packed with western tourists looking for Japanese souvenirs, crafts, and matcha ice cream! You can also stop for your coffee fix at Starbucks Coffee - Kyoto Nineizaka Yasaka Chaya and sit on the traditional tatami mats!

Day 11: Gion Matsuri and Exploring Gion-Higashiyama

Our stay in Kyoto luckily coincided with Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s most famous festivals. The streets of Gion fill with colourful floats, lively parades, and traditional performances, offering a perfect chance to immerse yourself in Japanese culture.

The Yoiyama night-festival which happens on July 16th should not be missed. Street stalls serve up delicious food and you can see many of the floats lit up and on display.

Outside of the festival, one must spend time exploring the Gion-Higashiyama area, starting with the iconic Yasaka Pagoda, a stunning five-story structure that stands out against the traditional wooden buildings.

We took a stroll down the picturesque Shirakawa Lane, a charming street lined with willow trees, rivers, and old tea houses, but ran out of time to visit Kenninji Temple, Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, a popular place known for its serene gardens and beautiful artwork.

Day 12: Kyoto's Natural Wonders

Eager to visit the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Forest but want to avoid the crowds???

Here's the best way to do that: Start with a visit to Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple, a peaceful spot known for its thousands of stone Buddha statues honoring the departed. There is a mini bamboo forest there where you can take beautiful photos - without others ruining your shot!

From there, it's a pleasant walk through traditional neighbourhoods, past the Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street, until you make your way to the far end of Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. There you can enjoy the towering bamboo stalks which create a serene, otherworldly atmosphere.

Finally, as you leave the bamboo forest you will come upon the Garden Entrance to Tenryu-ji Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage has the most magnificent gardens which blend seamlessly with the surrounding mountains. I highly encourage you to enjoy a moment of zen sitting at the Main Hall, overlooking Sogen Pond.

Week 3: Tokyo Attractions

Day 13 & 14: Tokyo Art, Food, and Shopping

One smart decision we made was to start and end our three week Japan trip in Tokyo. Doing so gets you back to Narita or Haneda Airport for your return flight home, but also is convenient for any shopping you plan to do. You won't have to lug your purchases through the other big cities if you leave shopping till the end!

In contrast to the temples and gardens you've seen on this trip, today is the day to immerse yourself in the futuristic world of TeamLab Planets, an interactive digital art museum where you walk through water and experience art installations that engage all your senses. Be sure to book your ticket ahead of time as it does sell out.

Afterward, visit the Tsukiji Fish Market for a taste of local specialties . The wholesale fish market has moved but the Tsukiji Outer Market is still the place find stalls offering traditional Japanese food especially fresh seafood.

In the afternoon, head to Ginza, one of Tokyo’s premier shopping districts. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons March to October, the main shopping street Chuo Dori is closed to traffic, making for a pleasant and easy shopping experience.

📌 TIP: Japan offers tax-free shopping for tourists for purchases over 5,000 yen. You'll need to present your passport at the time of purchase and your items will be wrapped. You can open and use the non-consumable items (such as clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc.) as long as the item is leaving the country with you. However, you cannot use or consume the consumables (such as food, drink, cosmetics etc.) before leaving Japan. They must be left in the wrapped package and may be checked by customs officers.

Some of our favourite shops were Uniqlo and it's lower-priced sister shop GU for trendy yet affordable fashion, Itoya for unique stationery, and of course Muji for stylish home goods, gifts, and everyday essentials. We ended up purchasing two additional carry-on luggages from Muji for our trip home so you can guess how many purchases we made in Japan!!

Day 15 & 16: Tokyo DisneySea and Exploring Tokyo’s Icons

One fun family experience we were looking forward to was a visit to Japan's theme parks. You have a few options: Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, and Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea in Tokyo.

DisneySea offers a unique, ocean-themed experience, perfect for thrill-seeking teens and those looking for immersive attractions. Tokyo Disneyland, with its classic Disney charm, is ideal for families and anyone wanting to relive the magic of Disney.

Temperatures when we were in Japan in July were extremely hot so we decided to start our visit to DisneySea later in the afternoon and stay for the night time show. It was a great time to go: we avoided the crowds and with a few paid Premier Access passes and short lineups we were able to enjoy some of the best rides.

The next day, explore more of Tokyo. You can visit the Imperial Palace, home to Japan's royal family, and enjoy its beautiful gardens. For lunch, head to Tokyo Ramen Street in the underground of Tokyo Station, where you can taste some of the city’s best ramen. In the afternoon, find your way over to Akihabara, Tokyo’s hub for electronics, anime, and manga culture. It’s a must-visit for your anime obsessed teens.

Day 17: Shibuya and Roppongi: Starbucks, Shopping, and Skyline Views

One place we had to visit was the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Nakameguro, a stunning four-story coffee haven where you can enjoy artisanal coffee, tea, and pastries in a stylish setting. Even if you are not a coffee fan, you'll enjoy starting your day at the Roastery, one of only six in the world, with it's gorgeous architecture and peek at coffee bean roasting on-site.

For a final day in Japan, head to Shibuya for a shopping spree. TikTok favourite MEGA Don Quijote offers an eclectic mix of goods, from snacks and only-in-Japan KitKat flavours, to skincare and Korean makeup products, and fun souvenirs.

Other shops I highly recommend in the area are Standard Products (a must stop if you love inexpensive, minimal design!), Hands, LoFT, Uniqlo and Muji (a great place to pick up extra luggage if needed!)

In the evening, make your way to Roppongi Mori Tower for the Tokyo City View, an observation deck that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. We arrived just before sunset and it was a wonderful way to say goodbye to this amazing city.

Day 18: Travel Home

With five carry-on luggages now to manoeuvre, we didn't really want to hop back onto a subway or express train back to Narita airport. The most convenient and inexpensive option was to take the Limousine Bus.

Taking a taxi to the nearby bus terminal, we caught the Limousine Bus which offers a stress-free and comfortable way to travel from your hotel to Narita Airport or Haneda Airport.

The bus also has multiple pickup points at major hotels throughout Tokyo, and we found the air-conditioned bus and their on-time service so enjoyable. It was a convenient, stress-free, efficient way to end this perfect trip - we wouldn't expect anything less from the wonderful Japanese people!

As a parent, there's also the relief of getting back into routines, and joy at seeing your kids dive into fresh challenges. But before that happens, you need to gear up for the back-to-school rush. It can be bit overwhelming, especially when it comes to getting everything ready, and a little preparation can make all the difference.

My daughter Chloe is headed into Grade 10 and we've got a few things to do to get her ready for the school year. High school students can be more particular about their school supplies, so back to school shopping is something we undertake together.

Whether you’re tackling your school supplies list, updating your high schoolers wardrobe, or sorting through the latest tech needs, having a solid plan will set everyone up for success.

When it comes to back-to-school shopping, a little planning goes a long way. The first step? Setting a budget. With so many things to buy—school supplies, clothing, tech gadgets—it’s easy for costs to spiral out of control.

Start by determining what’s reasonable for your family. Look at last year’s expenses as a benchmark, then factor in any new needs for this year. And don’t forget to involve your teen in the process.

Chloe and I sit down every year to discuss what she needs and what we can afford. Essentials come out of our budget, but if there are specific items that are extra costly that she really wants (like these Air Jordan 4 sneakers), she takes money from her savings. She's saved money from birthdays and allowance and is mindful of what she spends on.

Having both of us contribute to back to school shopping is a great way to teach financial responsibility and make sure we’re on the same page.

Our high school provides Chromebooks for students, which is a great savings if a new laptop isn't in the budget. These are used daily so it’s worth investing in quality items that will last.

Like me, my high schooler likes her school supplies to be functional and have aesthetic appeal too. Muji pens and mechanical pencils are my absolute favourite for everyday use. Assorted colours are great for keeping a weekly student planner neat and organized.

Beyond the basics, specialized supplies are where things can get tricky, depending on your teen’s courses and grade level. If they’re taking advanced math or science, a good scientific calculator is non-negotiable. The Texas Instruments TI-84 is a solid, reliable choice, but it can be pricey, so watch for discounts. I use the Coupert app to easily find discount codes when I'm shopping online.

For art classes, quality supplies are key—look for brands like Prismacolor for pencils and Winsor & Newton for paints. But you don’t have to break the bank; many craft stores offer great deals and coupons, which can help keep costs down.

Lastly, let’s talk organization. High school can get hectic, so staying organized is crucial. File folders are perfect for keeping notes from school handy, or papers sorted by subject. Locker organizers can help maximize space.

But nothing is more important to a student's life than their backpack. Ideally, your choice of backpack will combine both the features needed to stay organized and a trendy style that your student will want to wear.

In 2024, nothing is more trendy than the old-school Jansport backpack. Chloe settled on the Jansport Big Student Backpack which features lots of pockets, a separate padded laptop compartment, and a water bottle pocket (big enough to hold the must-have Stanley reusable water bottle, naturally).

Technology for School

In today’s high-tech world, having the right technology is just as important as notebooks and pencils. When it comes to choosing a laptop or tablet for your high schooler, there are a few key factors to consider:

Think about your budget. While it’s tempting to go for the latest model, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a device that meets your teen’s needs. You can also consider "Amazon Renewed" which offers lower cost pre-owned, refurbished products that come with a money-back guarantee.
Performance is another crucial factor—look for something with enough processing power to handle schoolwork, streaming, and even a bit of light gaming.
Portability is also important, especially if your teen will be carrying their device between classes. Lightweight models like the MacBook Air or Microsoft Surface Go are great options that balance power with portability. For a more budget-friendly choice, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet is a solid performer at a fraction of the cost.

Don’t forget about the tech accessories that are key to a productive school day. A good pair of headphones is a must, especially for study sessions or online classes. Look for options with good sound quality and comfort, like the Beats Studio3 (which we have and love!) or the Sony WH-1000XM4.

If your home is anything like ours, back-to-school clothing is a delicate balance between current styles, school dress code guidelines, and parent and teen personal preferences.

Every school has its own set of rules, so before you hit the stores, it’s a good idea to review what’s allowed and what’s not. This can save you from having to make returns later. The key is to find new clothes that are trendy yet appropriate, allowing your teen to express their style while staying within the rules.

As for wardrobe essentials, take direction from your teen. Do they prefer to wear jeans or do they live in sweatpants? Are they in hoodies every day or do they like layering t-shirts under sweaters. It's no use buying perfectly fine and functional clothing if your teen will absolutely not wear them. Trust me - I've bought way too many cute shirts that end up never worn at the bottom of the drawer!

- Ribbed t-shirts. We have these shirts in a few colours. They're good quality, affordable, and great for layering.

- Women's Antora Jacket. Chloe has worn this jacket for a few years and it is indispensible. It's perfect for that in-between fall to winter weather - light enough to layer under, but warm and good protection from the elements.

- Oversized hoodie. In a must-have deep green colour, this oversized hoodie will get lots of use

- High-waisted leggings. These high-waisted leggings are a long-time favourite. Great quality and fit!

- UGG Women's Classic Mini II Ankle Boot. A popular choice that goes well with any outfit.

- Adidas Samba OG Shoes. The sneaker that you'll see every trendy teen wearing this season.

- 2 pairs hoop earrings. Simple hoop earrings have never gone out of style. These ones are easy to dress up or down.

- Striped Loop Apple Watch Band. An easy way to change up the look of the watch my teen wears every day.

With these key pieces, Chloe can create outfits that are comfortable and easy to wear. She can easily change up the look by adding in different tops or sweaters and give her the flexibility to dress up or down depending on the day.

The goal is to find items that are both practical and fashionable, helping your teen feel confident and ready for whatever the school year throws their way.

Tips for Stress-Free Shopping

When To Shop

Are you a last-minute shopper or do you shop early?

Shopping early in July or August gives you the advantage of a wider selection and the peace of mind that comes with being prepared. Plus, you can take your time hunting for deals. Though, you might not see the fall weather clothing you need for the school year in the stores just yet.

On the flip side, last-minute shopping in late August to late September can sometimes score you bigger discounts as stores clear out inventory, but it’s a gamble with limited options and the risk of missing out on essentials. To strike a balance, consider starting early for the must-haves (like backpacks and jeans) and holding off on less critical items until closer to the start of school when sales heat up.

Shopping Online

Online shopping is incredibly convenient—no need to leave the house, and you can easily compare prices across sites. But for certain items, like clothing or tech, there’s no substitute for seeing things in person - especially if you have a picky teen!

In-store shopping allows your teen to try on clothes for the perfect fit and get hands-on with tech gadgets before committing. Chloe and I make a mom-daughter day of it... shopping at local stores and afternoon breaks at Starbucks make the task so much more enjoyable.

Don’t forget to leverage sales and discounts which can be abundant near the end of August. Keep an eye out for coupons, student discounts, and tax-free weekends, which can help you stretch your budget further. Signing up for store newsletters, even temporarily, can also tip you off to upcoming sales, ensuring you get the best deals for your money.

Hot tip: Sign up for an app like Coupert which helps you find discount codes and/or earn cash back while you shop. I installed the extension on my mobile and desktop so now it instantly finds discounts, wherever I'm shopping.

We are just weeks away from our summer vacation to Japan. We've got lots of activities planned so I've been giving a lot of thought to my packing list.

I like to travel light (with just a carry-on bag if I can!) so I'm aiming to put together a summer travel capsule wardrobe that will have me looking stylish and ready for every occasion. That means the best travel outfits to get me through long sightseeing days or a short road trip, cute Instagram-worthy opportunities, and versatile enough to transition from a beach day to a nice dinner out.

This post will guide you through selecting the best summer travel outfits, offering practical tips on essential clothing items, footwear, and accessories to pack into your luggage to ensure you accentuate your personal style and feel your best.

There are different types of travelers. There are those who love nothing more than to lounge on the beach or pool at their tropical paradise. There are those who grab their crossbody bag, comfortable shoes, and set off for a day of adventure.

Different activities require different types of clothing, so it's important to plan accordingly. If your trip includes a lot of sightseeing, you'll need comfortable walking shoes and outfits that allow for easy movement.

At a minimum, I like to follow the 3-3-3 rule for travel outfit planning: have at least 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 pairs of shoes to mix and match and create different outfits.

I like to pack mostly pants and dresses for walking around. One comfortable choice is wide-leg trousers or linen pants paired with white sneakers and a short-sleeve top. This is a great option for travel to a new city where you might be visiting museums, parks, and religious or cultural centres and want to look pulled together and dressed appropriately for the right places.

Similarly, a two-piece outfit with a matching set of top and skirt or shorts (they're on trend these days!) or a flowy dress will have you looking cute and comfortable. As a tourist, have a bit of fun with your summer capsule wardrobe and wear outfits you might not normally wear at home.

I love to wear dresses in brighter colors in the summer time and accent with simple jewelry. A sleeveless midi dress will keep you cool. Opt for a breathable cotton and top it with a cropped cardigan or shrug for an extra layer.

When it comes to the world of summer travel outfits, comfort and practicality should be your top priority. There is nothing that ruins a vacation faster than feeling hot, sticky, and uncomfortable, am I right??

Breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking materials are perfect for keeping you cool and comfortable in hot weather. These fabrics allow air to circulate, reducing the risk of overheating and making long days of walking or exploring so much more pleasant.

I'm a huge fan of moisture-wicking clothing like the AIRism collection from Uniqlo. The material feels smooth and silky and it works quickly to absorb or disperse sweat. Adventure brands like Mountain Warehouse and Columbia also carry pretty breathable dresses and shorts so you can stay cool and not compromise on style.

Airplane Travel Outfit

You'll also want to consider what you'll be wearing on the plane or on long travel days. For short flights, shorts or skirts with bare legs might be fine. But we are creatures of comfort so a long flight requires clothing that is loose, cozy, non-restrictive. The longer your flight, the more comfortable you'll want to dress. That doesn't mean you need to look dumpy. Fashionable fliers know that stylish athleisure wear is the way to go.

Even in summer, planes can get cold so you'll want to have layers to keep you warm. Soft pants, socks, a comfy t-shirt, and a long-sleeve zip-up hoodie or open-front cardigan for when you're feeling chilled are a great choice. Leave the high-waisted pants or tight fitting shirt for later in your trip - you'll want clothes you can sleep and sit in comfortably for those long-haul flights. Leggings, joggers, pants with a bit of stretch or comfort waistbands are well suited for travel days.

When it comes to curating the perfect summer travel wardrobe, selecting the right clothing items is key to ensuring comfort, versatility, and style throughout your trip. Essential summer travel clothing items, such as versatile tops, comfortable bottoms, chic dresses, jumpsuits, and practical swimwear, and practical footwear can make packing a breeze and outfit planning effortless.

There's a few rules I abide by when selecting the pieces that make it into my suitcase:

Stick to 3 or 4 colors so you can mix and match pieces. Having lots of color in your wardrobe may lead to overpacking. By bringing fewer pieces in black, white, and a neutral beige or grey, you can easily create enough different outfits for a two or three week trip.
Avoid dry clean only fabrics. Chances are you might have a clothing mishap or spill something on yourself while you're off on your adventures. You don't want to ruin a blouse early in your trip and not be able to wear it until you get to the dry cleaners - back home.
Don't bring a one-time use outfit (unless you have a very specific occasion you need it for). While it would be wonderful to wear a two-piece satin dress, your favourite heels, and sequin clutch purse for a romantic dinner along the Seine, those items will just sit in your luggage for the majority of the trip. Conversely, women's sweatsuits might the comfiest choice for the plane ride but will prove to be a bulky outfit you don't want to lug around. Save the luggage space for versatile clothing that can be used for different looks.

We made some changes to our dining room recently. From the soft jute rug to the vintage mirror to the new trim paint (serendipitously called Jute AF-80 by Benjamin Moore), these updates have infused our dining room with the charm and warmth it was missing. We have most of our closets under control. From the kids closet in my daughter's room to our small front hall closet, we've learned how to make the most out of a small storage space.

But my hallway linen closet? It had become a total disaster! With some creative solutions and a bit of effort, I've finally transformed our hall closet into a storage space that's both functional and visually appealing. You can easily take these linen closet organization ideas into your space, big or small.

Over time, my closet had become a dumping ground for mismatched bath towels, flat and fitted sheet sets in different sizes for bed sizes we no longer had, and pillow cases that had seen better days. I emptied the entire closet and organized the items into three groups: keep, donate, and toss. It quickly became apparent that, no, I did not need so much stuff!

It's a great idea to actually assess how you use your linens. If you tend to remove your bedding, wash it immediately, and replace it back on the bed, then there's no need to have so many extra sets. Think of what you need for the whole family and purge the rest.

Heavy questions, I know. But really, this is what I've been pondering. Especially today... it's the start of the new year... and it's my birthday! :)

For those of us in the second half of our lives, these kinds of questions become more frequent. Louder. More troublesome.

Four years ago to the day I wrote this post about experiencing a midlife crisis. My feelings have only become more pronounced with what has happened to the world since then. Call it the "great reset", when Covid, global conflicts, inflation etc etc have caused us all to reconsider and reprioritize what we want out of life.

For me, that has shifted so much over the years. I started my career with a degree in Finance and an MBA in Strategic Management. As a financial analyst and then a project manager, I loved digging deep into numbers, creating processes, and bringing large, complex projects to fruition.

Then I started this blog in 2007 and built an online career around it. I've created multiple income streams, made tens of thousands in affiliate commissions, and continue to work with amazing brands on five-figure collaborations.

I've also been a conference organizer, a podcaster, an influencer, a social media consultant. I've run courses and masterminds, appeared in magazines and on air.

And somewhere along the way, I lost sight of my endgame.
