I often wondered why ginger helps tummies and this Homemade Gingerale Recipe post on the Life From Scratch blog has some great info about the benefits of gingerale.
Here's a different take on a traditional Halloween treat from the Marilyn Dennis Show! We used to make popcorn balls with corn syrup, and butter, but then found my daughter was sensitive to corn products. This version from the Marilyn Dennis site, includes almond, sunflower or peanut butter and brown rice syrup. I'm not sure how much healthier this recipe is than the regular recipe. You may want to use the food finder nutrition calculator to compare your version with this one.

(Makes approx 28)

Healthy Popcorn Balls Ingredients :

1/2 Cup Almond, Sunflower or Peanut Butter

1/2 Cup Brown Rice Syrup (found at most health food stores)

Healthy Popcorn Balls Directions
1. Place nut butter and rice syrup in a saucepan and warm over medium heat about 1 minute till it becomes spreadable.

2. Pour mixture over the popped popcorn (make sure to take out any unpopped kernels) in a bowl and with a rubber spatula or using your hands, coat the popcorn with the nut butter mixture.

3. With damp hands, roll into 1 1/2 inch balls, or leave the mixture loose for a great snack.
One of our favourite Family recipes is Vegetable Dip. The recipe is based on the Knorr Vegetable Dip Recipe, with a few of our own personal tweaks. Here is the Knorr Vegetable Dip Recipe, followed by our adaptation. What personal twist do you put on this recipe?
Ingredients:

1pkg. Knorr® Vegetable Soup Mix

500 mL sour cream 2 cups

125 mL Hellmann's® Mayonnaise 1/2 cup

Method:

Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Chill 2 hours. Serve with your favourite dippers

Our Family’s Twist on Knorr Vegetable Dip
Ingredients:

1pkg. Knorr® Vegetable Soup Mix

500 mL Low Fat Balkan Style Yogurt 2 cups

1pkg. frozen spinach thawed, and drained

1 large round day old pumpernickel loaf of bread

Method:

Combine all ingredients except bread in medium bowl. Chill 2 hours. Meanwhile, cut the top off the loaf of pumpernickel bread, and cut the inside of the loaf into 1 inch to 2 inch cubes. Remove the bread cubes to form a bowl, and arrange around the empty bread bowl on a platter. When the dip is ready, scoop into the bread bowl, and top with the lid. Use bread cubes as dippers, along with a variety of veggies.
Knorr Dry soup mixes are a staple in our home, as they are really handy to have on hand if someone pops in unexpectedly. What do you keep on hand as staples?
My devilled eggs would never come out of the shell. Then a member of our women’s church group gave me this great tip – don’t use fresh eggs to make devilled eggs – they’re too hard to peel.
¼ cup (50 mL) Bick’s® Mini Crunch'ems - Garlic, finely chopped
1 tsp (5 mL) dijon mustard
salt, black and cayenne peppers to taste
Method:
(This works great !!! Good for when all your family is together. The best part is that no one has to wait for their special omelette !!!)

Ingredients:
2 eggs per person
Variety of chopped ingredients: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.

Tools:
Large Ziploc bag per person
Large Pot of Boiling Water

Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with permanent marker.

Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2) shake to combine them.

Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.

Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shakes. Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.

Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes [we did 15 minutes]. You can usually cook 6-8 omelettes in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.

Open the bags and the omelette will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed.

Nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets involved in the process and a great conversation piece.

Imagine having these ready the night before, and putting the bag in boiling water while you get ready. And in 15 minutes, you've got a nice omelette for a quick breakfast!!!

Flourless (Gluten-free) Pancakes

A quick, easy recipe to remember. Great if you're low on flour or have bananas to use up. It sounds odd, but works great!

Mash together: 1 ripe banana & 1 egg until smooth.

Pour into hot, greased frying pan and cook over medium heat.
Flip when surface is dry.

Enjoy as you would regular pancakes!
