After a few crappy weeks, an ice storm, and a snow storm and sick grandkiddo that changed our anniversary plans, things are beginning to look up.

Undeterred, we found a way to make the most of our snowy weekend at home for our anniversary. Part of the fun was learning to salsa, courtesy of YouTube. This set me up to get ready for Benito Bowl (also known as the Super Bowl Halftime Show). And since I’ve been listening to Bad Bunny’s album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS and practicing my basic salsa steps to BAILE INoLVIDABLE and KLOuFRENS, I was ready to go.

Benito Bowl didn’t disappoint. The woman-led Seattle Seahawks organization beat the Pats. *jumps in the air and pumps fist* Led to victory by a quarterback who the league who wasn’t a flashy whiz kid and certainly not one of the powerhouse quarterbacks we expected to be there. I love a good underdog story. And I hate when a sport is dominated by the same organizations. So congrats to Seattle Seahawk nation. Maybe by the time we get those Back to the Future hoverboards we’ve been waiting on since 1985, my Cleveland Browns will be relevant again.

Then yesterday I discovered some exciting news. Made for Me, the book the kicks off The Black Diamonds Quartet—my Love & Music Suite spinoff—was included in Book Riot’s list of 16 Best New Romances by Black Authors, curated by Jessica Pryde. I’ve written thirty-seven published books. Yet, every single book is different. Some books seem to practically write themselves. In other books, the characters are shy and need a bit of coaxing before I fully get them and essential elements of their story line come together. Zarina Michaels, of When It Comes to You, has turned out to be one of those elusive, enigmatic characters for me. She’s been hurt and has a lot of layers—some of which reveal themselves the more I write her story.

I’m loving each and every surprise discovery and element of the story. Moments that make me cry or laugh or just want to dig even deeper into her and Dre’s story. But I’ve had to come to the hard realization that Dre and Zarina’s story refuses to be rushed.  So When It Comes to You won’t be released next week. It’ll be coming out this fall instead. Stay tuned for the exact date.

Forgive me for being a day late with the newsletter. I’m on a completely unexpected vacation on Hilton Head Island and the days got away from me. I’ll be returning home today and preparing for my next road trip. This time, I’ll be attending the inaugural Black Romance Book Fest kicking off on Friday. I had the chance to attend my first Boozy Book Tour right here in Raleigh, North Carolina last weekend. It was a fun event with lots of great authors and readers in attendance. It was great getting to meet everyone and the Brazilian buffet and signature Raleigh drink we were served were both so good. Have you started reading the 45 Book Baes & HEAs Novellas?

I’ve been crazy busy with secret projects, a book that refuses to write itself, family responsibilities, and the stress of the world being on fire. So while I downloaded so many amazing books from the incredible Book Baes & HEAs G!v3aw@y, I read my first book this week. I started with The Billionaire’s Bookworm by the prolific B. Love. I loved Alex & Eva’s sweet romance. (Yes, you read that right. LOL. There are zero love scenes, and there’s minimal swearing in this one.) That took me by surprise, but it’s something B. Love is experimenting with this year. I must admit, sis did her thing. I’d highly recommend it—even if you’re a reader, like me, who normally prefers spice. 

Reading The Billionaire’s Bookworm was a great way to kick off reading my way through all forty-five titles in the Book Baes and HEAs G!v3aw@y. Now, I can’t wait to read the next one. So what had happened was…I was determined to organize my attic and garage, both filled with some really solid, high-end pieces we got when a building my husband worked at was decommissioned. But I didn’t have time to focus on selling the other items. Recently, I did a little research on some of the pieces I wanted to sell and stumbled into the world of reselling.

I’m a thrifting girlie who enjoys the thrill of bargain hunting for high-end goods at my local thrift or consignment shop. And now, I’m low-key completely obsessed with the idea of thrifting and reselling. And since our attic is stuffed with sellable goodies and our closets are overflowing with brand name clothing we don’t wear anymore (or have never worn), I started there.

Last week, I started by selling a few children’s items: a wooden bench with toy box storage and a stroller. This week, I sold my first wearable item on Poshmark: a pair of brown, vintage Y2K, Tommy Hilfiger boots I’ve owned since 2004 and wore maybe five times. I also launched The Perfect Find online thrift store website here.

So you might wonder if I’m still going to be writing romance. The short answer is YES. Writing will always be my primary vocation. But I’m excited about this fun, adventurous side hustle that brings me joy (and extra cash) at such a dismal time in our history. It makes me happy to know I’m helping the environment by finding new homes for these preloved items rather than condemning them to a landfill in a socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhood. (Because isn’t that where they always are, by design?) Lastly, recycling, reusing, and repurposing items is one more way to support economic sanctions against companies with little regard for the environment, their employees, and our communities.

Well, I guess the secret is finally out of the bag.
