Smart Building DataHub is the missing BIM link for Building Controls. While standard BIM tools excel at physical geometry, controls engineering has traditionally been left behind in 2D spreadsheets and CAD files. Exclusive: Interview with Nonica Co-Founder and CTO Jaime Alonso

Editor's Note: Here on Revit Add-ons, we've documented NonicaTab Free and NonicaTab PRO previously. However, since then, both versions have undergone significant changes, especially with the additions of AI. Instead of simply documenting the add-ins again, we reached out to the good folks at Nonica for an interview, and Jaime Alonso, co-founder and CTO, was kind enough to oblige.

Can you please describe your two add-ins in a quick, elevator pitch?

NonicaTab actually started back in 2020 as a Revit Add-In to make custom Revit toolbars easier, we ended up building over 36 tools that people can mix and match depending on what they need. Then, in early 2025, when MCPs [Model Context Protocols] came out, we saw an opportunity and shifted toward AI, specifically, an A.I. Connector for Revit that lets AI extract, review, report on, and document your models using natural language.

We offer it in two versions: there is a Free version, which includes a solid set of our most-used tools plus a limited version of the AI Connector, so people can really get a feel for what it does. And then there is PRO, which unlocks the full toolset and unlimited use of the AI Connector for those who end up relying on it more heavily.

In more detail, what are the differences between the Free and PRO versions?

On the toolbar side, Free includes a curated set of our most popular tools, the ones people reach for most often [13 tools]. PRO gives you all 36+ tools, so if there's something more specific or niche you need, it's probably in there.

On the AI Connector side, Free lets you use it too, with some usage limits, so you can genuinely try it out on real work and see how it fits into your workflow. It is mostly geared toward extracting, reviewing, and reporting from Revit, asking questions, pulling data, generating reports. The editing side, like setting parameters or adding views to sheets, is reserved for PRO.

So honestly, a lot of users do just fine on Free, especially if they are mostly doing lighter documentation and review work. PRO makes more sense once you want AI to actually make changes in the model, not just report on it.

What popular 3rd party add-ins are baked into the Pro version?

A few tools were inspired from some well-known third-party add-ins such as Align or Room Finishing. For instance, for the tool Color Elements by Parameters, we converted the Color Splasher from C# to Python, and added a few features (e.g. the option to create view filters for the colors or automatic legends). After releasing in Nonicatab, it was also included in pyRevit set of tools, so especially proud about that one. The idea was to build native versions inside NonicaTab that we could keep supporting long-term, so users aren't stuck depending on something that might not get another update.

Can you please describe in detail your AI integration?

The A.I. Connector is a secure bridge (MCP) between Revit and AI desktop apps like Claude or ChatGPT Work, giving A.I. over 50 pre-built, tested tools for exploring, analyzing, editing, and documenting Revit models.

The key idea behind it is that traditional A.I. chats for Revit generated and run code from scratch, which tends to lead to errors and breaks down on complex tasks. So instead of letting the AI write its own Revit API code on the fly, we give it a toolbox of tools we have already built and tested, things like reading parameter values, checking family file sizes, seeing which views are placed on which sheets, and so on. The A.I. picks the right tool for the job instead of improvising code, which makes the results more reliable and stable.

In practice, that means someone can just ask, something like "review all doors in this project for accessibility compliance" or "generate a report on model warnings," and the AI uses those tools directly inside the live Revit session to pull real data and give a real answer, no scripting, no menus.

On setup, it's meant to be simple, no dependencies like Node.js, everything installs automatically through the A.I. Connector.

Can you describe a few useful implementations of your AI on a Revit project?

A few examples; Reviewing and fixing parameter formatting across a model, cleaning up view templates and re-assign scope boxes, or renaming and renumbering views, rooms, and sheets to match a standard. It can also translate parameters or element names, generate interactive reports with charts connected to Revit, and break down warnings by severity and which elements they affect.

Beyond review, it is also useful for action items, selecting or coloring elements by category or parameter, creating sheets, sections, levels, or grids, assigning revisions in bulk, tagging elements by type or condition, printing to PDF with custom naming, or isolating elements tied to a specific warning or parameter.

If I had to sum it up, most of what people actually use it for day-to-day is QA/QC; catching inconsistencies or formatting issues, missing/duplicated tags, wrong or empty parameters, or warnings before they become real problems, instead of relying on someone manually clicking through the model.

What is the price of the Pro version?

The price is 85€ per user per year, roughly 7€ per month. For initial testing, I would still recommend to start with the Free version or the free trial of the PRO version.

Is there anything else you'd like our readers to know about your add-ins?

Just that we are constantly trying to improve this, and a lot of it comes from things we learn once teams start using it in projects.

One example: we noticed that when the AI had to work with big lists of elements, it was slow and it was consuming a lot of tokens just to handle the ids. So we introduced the subsets, a way to group and reference big sets of elements as one single reference, instead of passing every id back and forward, and this alone made a lot of the workflows 10x more efficient.

The same happened with the reports. In the beginning, the reports were static, AI generates it and that's all. But we hear from the users that they want to interact with the data after, so now the reports stay live-connected with the model, and you can click or edit Revit elements directly from the report, without the need to spend more tokens asking AI every time.

These kind of things come directly from the feedback and from watching where is the friction for the people that are really using it, not from a roadmap that we make by ourselves.

Free Maestro: Create, Organize, Deploy, & Manage Custom Autodesk Revit Tools

Purpose and Positioning

Maestro is intended for teams that need custom Revit functionality but do not always need or want the overhead of developing, compiling, distributing, and maintaining a conventional add-in. It allows workflows to be assembled around the actual needs of a firm, project team, or production group. Users can place scripts, websites, folders, documentation, and other resources into custom Revit ribbon interfaces so that important workflows are easier to find, launch, and standardize.

Custom Revit Ribbon Creation

One of Maestro’s primary capabilities is the creation of custom Revit ribbon interfaces. Teams can build their own structured ribbon environment using custom tabs, panels, individual buttons, button stacks, pulldown buttons, split buttons, and panel slide-outs. Each ribbon item can include custom naming, descriptions, and icons, helping teams create a polished and intuitive interface for their internal tools.

Ribbon items can be configured to launch Python scripts, websites and web applications, files, folders, documentation, and other workflow resources. This reduces the need for users to search shared drives, remember command names, or locate scripts manually. Instead, Maestro places the workflow directly where Revit users already work: inside the Revit interface.

Python-Based Automation and Future Support

Maestro currently supports Python-based Revit workflows, allowing teams to create reusable automations that can be launched from the custom ribbon. These scripts can support a wide range of Revit tasks, including parameter review and modification, view and sheet management, annotation workflows, element selection and filtering, model audits, repetitive model changes, report generation, and enforcement of company standards. Support for C# scripts and Dynamo workflows is currently in development, which suggests the platform is intended to expand beyond its current Python-focused automation model.

AI-Assisted Revit Automation

Maestro includes AI-assisted automation features that are specifically oriented toward Revit scripting and the Maestro runtime environment. Users can describe the workflow they want to create and use Maestro AI to help generate, explain, troubleshoot, and revise Revit Python scripts. Because the AI is designed around Revit automation, it can account for supported script requirements, Revit context, configurable user inputs, and how scripts are expected to run inside Maestro.

This makes Maestro useful not only for experienced Revit developers, but also for BIM and design technology professionals who understand the desired workflow but may need assistance creating or refining the underlying automation. Generated scripts can be reviewed, tested, adjusted, and saved as reusable tools. The AI capability is built into the Maestro workflow, so users do not need a separate desktop AI application to begin developing automations.

Interactive Scripts Without Custom Interfaces

Maestro scripts can request information from users through configurable input controls, which reduces the need to build a separate interface for every tool. Supported inputs include text and numeric values, yes/no options, dropdown selections, Revit elements and element collections, files and folders, and Revit-specific categories and values. This allows script authors to create flexible, reusable tools that can adapt to different projects, standards, or user selections while keeping the development process lighter than traditional interface design.

Deployment and Enterprise Management

Maestro is also positioned as a deployment platform for Revit tools. For existing software development teams, it can speed up the process of delivering Revit automations to users by separating tool deployment from the traditional add-in release cycle. Enterprise deployments can be pushed centrally and updated across users and teams without requiring a Revit restart. This gives digital practice, VDC, and BIM teams more direct ownership of how tools are distributed, maintained, and improved across the organization.

Maestro Enterprise adds centralized workflow deployment, managed distribution to users and teams, central updates to deployed tools, usage and execution telemetry, organization-specific access and configuration, and enterprise onboarding and support. Centralized deployment and telemetry are available only to Enterprise customers, making this tier most relevant for firms that need governance, standardization, and visibility across multiple users or teams.

Access Levels

The free version of Maestro includes full custom ribbon creation and management, support for Python-based Revit workflows, custom tabs, panels, buttons, stacks, and dropdowns, and a monthly allowance of Maestro AI tokens. This makes the free version suitable for individuals or small teams that want to start organizing and testing Revit automations.

The Enterprise version is designed for organization-wide implementation. It adds the management, deployment, telemetry, licensing, and support capabilities that larger firms typically need when rolling out internal tools to many users. For Enterprise access, team licensing, invoicing, technical questions, or organization-wide implementation, users are directed to contact BLT SMRT, LLC directly.

Intended Users and Use Cases

Ecco: Logistics Planning

Ecco is a Revit add-in that creates simplified logistics proxies from assemblies, families, and groups by converting their combined geometry into unified DirectShape elements. Each proxy is represented as a single solid, making it easier to support quantity takeoff, delivery sequencing, procurement tracking, and truck-loading workflows directly inside Revit without exposing the full complexity of the design model.

The workflow begins with Create Proxies. Users select assemblies, family instances, or groups, and Ecco recursively gathers all subcomponent solids from the selected elements. It then boolean-unions that geometry into one solid, aligns the resulting proxy according to the source element’s facing direction, and places it at a user-defined staging offset. Each proxy is linked back to its original source element using Revit ExtensibleStorage, creating a bidirectional relationship that helps keep the logistics model connected to the design model.

The Rotate Proxy tool supports visual staging and truck-fit review by allowing selected proxies to be rotated in 90-degree increments around the X, Y, or Z axis. Because the tool is modeless, users can keep it open while rotating multiple proxies without repeatedly restarting the command.

The Set to Truck workflow is designed for fast assignment of proxies to trucks or containers. When opened, it automatically isolates proxy elements in the active view so users can focus only on logistics objects. Proxies can then be assigned continuously to a truck or container ID without reopening the window for each assignment, and the view is restored when the workflow is closed.

The Create Schedule command generates a Revit schedule named Ecco — Logistics Schedule, listing proxy elements by truck or container assignment. This allows logistics and procurement teams to review delivery groupings directly in Revit instead of relying on manually maintained spreadsheets.

The Proxy QC tool validates the relationship between proxies and their source elements. It identifies broken links and orphaned proxies that may result from model revisions, helping teams maintain confidence that the logistics model remains synchronized with the evolving design model.

We're Back... Again!

It's been awhile. Those familiar with Revit Add-ons might know that I suspended it when I joined Bentley Systems in 2020 (that proved to be an ill-advised career departure). My buddy Cord Ellison took over for a couple years, but that, unfortunately, ended.

Back in 2024, I prematurely announced the return of the blog. That's because I had joined Woolpert as a BIM Coordinator (working on Mission Critical projects) and was free to post again. In fact, my hiring was in large part thanks to my past work here on Revit Add-ons! As such, this blog has continued to reward me. But, over those past two years, after an initial spurt, I've only posted sporadically (five times in 2025). What can I say? It's been hard man... But I refuse to let Revit Add-ons die.

Time has marched on. Although mostly fallow, Revit Add-ons has continued to tick up in pageviews, now totaling nearly 8.5 million! Thanks to all of you—it means more than you know.

Many of the other Revit blogs I've followed have also slowed or stopped. The BIMsider hasn't posted in four months. Boost Your BIM hasn't posted in the past couple of years. The Building Coder is simply gone; Jeremy Tammik has transitioned from Autodesk to a private consultant, and his site is simply... gone. In its place is a message that Typepad (the blog authoring platform) has shutdown. Wow, what a loss. Ditto for It's Alive in the Lab. The Revit Kid is still relatively active, having posted only a couple of months ago. Revit OpEd is for all intents and purposes fallow, as is What Revit Wants. And those are all the blogs I've followed... It's kind of sad really. We here at Revit Add-ons have been part of that trend, but I'm going to reverse it by posting at least once a day. That's my commitment to you, and to the community at large. Come along, won't you?
