Revit Add-ons Has Competition: Introducing RVT Plugins

So, somebody's stealing food from our babies' mouths... 😉

RVT Plugins is a competing site that bills itself as "your guide to the best Revit add-ins." We thought, perhaps, that the site was started during one of our fallow periods to fill the resulting void. However, the site was apparently established in 2018, while Revit Add-ons was in full swing, so we're not sure what the impetus was. (Revit Add-ons was itself established in 2011, and we made 500 posts in 2018.)

What's the difference? At first blush, RVT Plugins seems to have more product reviews, a lot more. However, upon closer inspection, these are generic enough that they could have been AI generated. Microsoft Copilot will do it for you from available standard Internet sources, just build "format as a review" into the prompt. While we don't have the time it takes to do many reviews here on Revit Add-ons, our reviews are strictly hands-on, and therefore, we hope, worth your time.

We will give props to RVT Plugins for using a very modern blog template, though I think we'll keep our more traditional blog roll format. While our host Blogger is the venerated grandaddy of blog hosting sites, RVT Plugins may be using a more modern hosting service, like Wix. If we were starting today, that's probably what we'd do. 😏 (We hope Blogger doesn't see this...)

RVT Plugins also has a convenient Subscribe feature, which notifies readers of new posts via email. We used to have an email subscription gadget on Revit Add-ons but Blogger, unfortunately, deprecated it. We'll see if we can set something up through a third party. Ditto for Facebook and LinkedIn gadgets. In the meantime, the best thing to do is to follow us on the socials: rvtaddons on X, Tim Grimm on LinkedIn, or rvtaddons on Facebook.

We'll note that a whopping eleven of the twelve posts on RVT Plugins' homepage, and these are the eleven most recent, correspond to Revit Add-ons posts made since our August 3rd relaunch. Hmm...

The posts on RVT Plugins lack attribution, both from a site author or authors and source websites. Many articles are obviously sourced from the Autodesk Design and Make Marketplace, but it's hard to tell if that's their exclusive source or not. Further, pricing is often wrong; many add-ins are flagged as free when they're not.

We'll also note that you won't get op ed articles like this one on RVT Plugins. And they're obviously very valuable indeed. 😎

Editor's Note: whenever I check Linkedin, which is several times a day, there are new posts about AI and Revit (or related product) modeling. It's impossible to keep up. Ironically, almost all of these modeling examples are of recreating existing buildings or details. Draftmate stands out as an AI tool tailored for converting sketches or CAD plans into new design BIM models. Read on for details.

With so much buzz around AI, and in the interest of transparency, I thought it was worthwhile to share that I'm now using AI to generate content for Revit Add-ons. I use Copilot in Word and specify the prompt, "Create a detailed summary of the [name] add-in for Revit from the Internet." Copilot pulls from available sources, usually the Autodesk Design and Make Marketplace (formerly the Autodesk App Store), online documentation, the developer's website, any reviews that have been written, and even video sources. From these sources, Copilot creates a uniquely structured document that is at once more comprehensive than any of the single sources. Of course, proofreading is a must, but Copilot does a remarkably good job.

From there, it's a simple copy and paste to my blog's editor, formatting the post, adding images and videos when appropriate, and adding attribution.

This is a review of the 3Dconnexion devices I bought recently, The CadMouse Pad, CadMouse Pro Wireless, Keyboard Pro with Numpad, and SpaceMouse Enterprise. Let's start small with the CadMouse Pad.

For daily Revit, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Rhino, or similar production environments, however, it is a practical workstation accessory that fits well into a two-handed 3Dconnexion workflow.

Surprisingly, even though it showed as paired out-of-the-box, I had to charge the Numpad (overnight).

Unlike most 3Dconnexion devices, you have to toggle on the application-specific menu for each program.

While thoughtful, the keyboard's 3Dconnexion keys heads-up display is too small. From a UI/UX perspective, I visualized a menu with icons the same size and layout as the 3Dconnexion keys, perhaps with some transparency for good measure. Instead, the menu is pretty small. At least it's repositionable. But, for me, the background is too light. There's no dark theme, and I use dark themes for everything I can. The system seems to pull the icons directly from the application. Because I use the Revit dark theme, my icons are light, and are illegible on the light background of the heads-up display. One other thing: The Numpad's heads-up display was not enabled by default.

All-in-all, considering there's no backlight as previously mentioned, the Keyboard Pro with Numpad feels like a lot of missed opportunities. Grade: C+

My 3Dconnexion Setup Review

So what's it like to have all these premium devices working in tandem? Pretty great I must say. I feel like I'm sitting down in a Revit productivity cockpit. In application-specific 3Dconnexion keys alone, there are 28. That's a lot of room for easy customization. And I'm a sucker for the productivity gains made through customization. And that's not even touching on the pre-built custom features, including those on the CadMouse alone.

I've placed my SpaceMouse Enterprise to the left of my keyboard for offhand (read left hand) use, and my Numpad is to the left of that. I'm still training myself to use my left hand; I find myself typing numbers more on my keyboard than before. But I'm trying to force myself to use the Numpad. I could always move it to the right of my mouse.

Regarding the SpaceMouse Enterprise buttons, I don't see myself using the keyboard modifiers, <Shift>, <Ctrl>, <Alt>, etc. But I really like the view control keys on the right side of the device—they're great for the thumb. While the backlit menu on the SpaceMouse Enterprise is nice, why isn't it a touchscreen? That feels like another missed opportunity. And, as mentioned in my review of the Keyboard Pro above, a dark theme for the menu is desirable; my light-colored Revit icons get lost on the light background.

All-in-all, I'm really happy with my setup, and I look forward to becoming more and more productive with these 3Dconnexion devices as time goes by.

My 3Dconnexion Setup

I received a package from 3Dconnexion yesterday. I pretty much ordered one of everything, a Keyboard Pro with Numpad, a CadMouse, and a SpaceMouse Enterprise (and I already had a CadMouse Pad).

I had a SpaceMouse Pro previously, and wrote a review of it, but I sold it when I wasn't working for an extended period. I also previously had a CadMouse, which I also reviewed, but it went belly up awhile back.

I only recently became aware of the Keyboard PRO, and wanted one, so I bit the bullet and bought it. I had a mouse I liked, but right now, when you buy a Keyboard Pro Kit, which includes the Numpad, you effectively get a CadMouse at a deep discount. The kit costs $139. The SpaceMouse Enterprise cost an additional $399, but it's a beaut.

My 3Dconnexion setup

I'll write a review on what it's like to have all these devices once I'm used to using all of them together. Right now, my experience isn't entirely positive, but that may change with use. I still have a lot of things to figure out, and I've got to train my offhand. So, more to come in perhaps a month or so.
