Realty stocks under pressure; down up to 6.5% on Moody's report

MUMBAI: Stocks of realty companies witnessed selling pressure today, falling by up to 6.5 per cent, after ratings agency Moody's said weak housing sales and stagnant prices will pose challenge to big real estate developers over the next 12 months.

Shares of Indiabulls Real EstateBSE -6.55 % slumped 6.55 per cent, Godrej PropertiesBSE -4.45 % shed 4.74 per cent, DLF lost 4.33 per cent and Unitech fell by 3.95 per cent on BSE.

Similarly, Oberoi Realty was down 3.40 per cent and Parsvnath Developers lost 1.37 per cent.

The BSE realty index was down 3.17 per cent to 1,220.73.

Ratings agency Moody's said, weak housing sales and stagnant prices will pose challenge to big real estate developers over the next 12 months as their cash flows and project execution capabilities get affected.

Developers will not reduce price to boost sales, rather will continue with their strategy to reduce apartment size and offer freebies, Moody's Investors Service said.

However, the agency said that "solid economic growth" would give some support to housing sales, while gradual easing of lending rates would boost investment activity.

MUMBAI: A sharp sell-off in the stock market wiped out over Rs 2 lakh crore from investors' wealth today as the benchmark Sensex plummeted 587 points following weak domestic and global macroeconomic data.

Total investor wealth of BSE-listed companies tumbled by Rs 2,02,654.47 crore to Rs 96,25,276 crore.

The 30-share index plunged 586.65 points or 2.23 per cent to settle at 25,696.44. Intra-day, the blue-chip index crashed 703.21 points to 25,579.88.

"Tracking weak cues from both domestic and global front, equity benchmarks tanked today. Mainly, sentiments were downbeat in reaction to weak macro-economic data of GDP. Adding to that, negativity on global front pushed benchmarks lower as the day progressed," said Jayant Manglik, President, Retail Distribution, Religare Securities Ltd.

A government data yesterday said that domestic growth had slowed down to 7 per cent in the June quarter from 7.5 per cent in the previous quarter, while a private survey today showed that China factory output shrank to a three-year low.

Cause and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is uncommon in developed countries where screening is strictly implemented. Internationally, cervical cancer remains to be one of the most common cancers in women. As a matter of fact, it is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the developing countries. Based on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is the most commonly type of cancer that occurs in ages 50 to 70 years old. However, there is an increase in the number of reported cases of in women less than 40 years old over the last two decades.

The cause of cervical cancer has already been established through numerous studies and researches. It has been known that it develops from genital infection caused by certain strains or species of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are over a hundred strains of HPV, but the two most commonly involved strains are HPV 16 and 18 which are the etiology of more than 70% of all cervical cancer cases worldwide. HPV is mostly transmitted though unprotected sexual intercourse. Infection can develop as soon as the virus shed to the infective site however not all infections could cause symptoms. Some may go undetected while others present with genital warts that is a potential source of development.

Apart from HPV, there are other factors that contribute to the development of cervical cancer. Having sex at a fairly young age and multiple sexual partners that could lead to different sexually transmitted infections are some factors. Persons with Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV) are also noted to have 5-fold increased risk of getting this cancer.

Vaginal bleeding, more prominent after a sexual intercourse, is usually the early symptom of cervical cancer. There could also be pain during sexual intercourse, foul-smelling vaginal discharge and pain when voiding. Sometimes this cancer could also be asymptomatic and would be incidentally discovered through a routine Papanicolaou (Pap) test. The test is done by obtaining a sample tissue from the area where the cervix and the vagina meet. The sample obtained will then be examined under a microscope to note of any cell that is precancerous. In developed countries such as the US, there is a strict implementation of a yearly Papanicolaou (Pap) test for women of reproductive age. This has been proven effective in preventing the development of a full blown cervical cancer. This is because precancerous cells are excised and treated before they further develop into malignant cancer cells. This is also the reason why there is a steady decrease in number of patients in the US and other developed western countries. The same program is also being pushed forward in developing countries where this cancer remains to be a burden of government health sectors.

Management of a full blown cervical cancer depends on the stage where it was diagnosed. In early stages of the disease, surgery is the management of choice. However in cases diagnosed late and when cancer cells already spread to other parts of the body, radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy is being used.

The prognosis also depends on the stage of it. Basically, a 5-year survival rate of patients in earlier stages are better compared to the end-stage.

At least 25 people have been killed after the Kamayani Express from Mumbai to Varanasi and the Mumbai-Jabalpur Janata Express derailed near Kudawa railway station, about 30 kilometres from Harda district in south western Madhya Pradesh, late on Tuesday night.

More than 300 people have been rescued after the two trains derailed while crossing a swollen Machak river, said officials. According to officials, six coaches of Kamayani Express and three coaches plus the engine of Janata Express were derailed late last night as the base material on the tracks got washed away. “The mishap took place around 11.30 PM on Tuesday as base material of the tracks got washed away in heavy rains.”

5:00 pm: Chouhan said 25 passengers were killed and 50 injured in the twin train mishaps. A government spokesperson, however, earlier said the death toll in the twin train tragedy stood at 29.

Every year in the monsoon the toy train is completely not running for 4 months starting from June to October. But not central railway had started this service in the monsoon on the 3 km between Aman Lodge and Matheran station. And over 11, 000 people travelled using the toy train of Matheran within 10 days starting of service.

People journeyed by their personal vehicles till Dasturi naka and after that they were paying excessive amounts to coolies or hire horses. The other option has been to basically walk enjoying Matheran nature. Now, they could reach the favorite hill station in 12 minutes in the comfortable toy train ride.

How to reach in matheran

The name of this hill station refers to the dense growth of jungle as its head. Matheran means a place topped by a jungle.

By Rail/Train

Getting to Matheran is half the fun; It is well connected by rail both, from Mumbai and Pune up to Neral Junction Station, a station at the bottom of the hill. From Neral a small Toy Train (Narrow gauge) takes you through a zigzag route of about 21 kms. to Matheran in two hours time. It's a very scenic two hours ascent as the train winds its way around the steep slopes. Some marvelous valley scenes can be observed during this journey. Three small stations called Jumma Patti, Water Pipe and Aman Lodge are on the way to Matheran.

The toy train can only be booked in advance from Mumbai or Pune which is a good idea in the high season (no reservations are accepted at Neral or Matheran but tickets go on sale 45 minutes before departure).

Mumbai-Neral, 90 kms. Neral-Matheran,21 kms,

From Mumbai CST, only a few of the Pune expresses stops at Neral Junction, including the Deccan Express and the Koyna Express. Most (but not all)of expresses from Mumbai stops at Karjat further down the line from Neral, from where you can backtrack on one of the frequent local trains. Alternatively, take a local Karjat bound train from Mumbai CST and get off at Neral.

Pune-Neral, 120 kms. (Neral-Matheran mountain train)

From Pune take a one of the few Mumbai bound expresses that stops at Neral (such as the Sahyadri Express) or one of the expresses which stops at Karjat and then get a local train from there up to Nerul.

By Road

From Mumbai

Mumbai-Neral-Matheran, 108 kms.

While going to Matheran by road, take Mumbai-Pune Highway(NH-4) upto Chowk Village and turn to Karjat road. From Karjat, the same road goes to Dasturi Naka, i.e. entrance of Matheran via Neral.

Get on to the Mumbai Pune Expressway at Panvel (Near McDonalds). Get onto the expressway to avoid the congested road through Panvel. Take the first exit (Shedung/Khopoli Exit) that comes less than 5 minutes after you get onto the expressway at McDonalds. (Here you will need to Pay a Toll at the toll-booth for using the expressway). This exit gets you back onto the Old Mumbai-Pune Road. Follow directions to proceed towards Pune. Once again you will have to pay a toll for using the old Bombay Pune Road. (Toll in both places is about Rs.25 each).

Follow the old Mumbai-Pune road for approximately 10 km. This will bring you to a crossing where a big green sign asks you to turn left for Karjat/Matheran. (Do not miss this crossing as otherwise you will end up in Khopoli. There is a large statue of Hindu god Shiva on right side of the old Mumbai-Pune Highway which can be seen from a long distance. The left turn about 50 metres before the statue).

9 km After turning left you reach another crossing called Charphata Karjat where you need to turn left towards Neral.

11 km After turning left, you will reach the bottom of the Matheran Hill ghat road.

Turn left here and climb 7 km to the Matheran Dasturi Car park.

From Pune

Set off towards Mumbai on the Pune-Mumbai expressway. Get off the Pune-Mumbai Expressway at the Khopoli exit after passing Lonavla/Khandala and get onto the old Pune-Mumbai road. Approximately 18 km later, you turn right as per a big green sign, in Chouk town. Follow the signs from then on.

One can also exit Pune-Mumbai NH4 at Haal Phata near Khopoli to enter SH 35 which will take you straight to the bottom of Matheran Ghat Road.

Car Parking and Entry

It is a steep and narrow road but well surfaced for the most part. When you reach the car park find a parking space in the designated area and park your car. The parking entrance fees and daily parking fees need to be paid here.

No vehicles are allowed beyond this point. Matheran center is a 40-minute walk from Dasturi Car Park. Before you enter the limits of Matheran, Matheran Municipal council charges a fees of Rs 25 per adult and Rs 10 for children.

Once you enter, red dusty pathways welcome you to the nature. Porters are available to carry luggage. You can enjoy the walks through the red pathways or ride on horse. Manual 'rickshaws’' are also available; each rickshaw is 'driven' by a couple of operators.

Parking facilities are available at Dasturi Naka, Matheran. From this point into the town center, either a trek on foot or on horseback or by hand pulled rickshaws, as motor vehicles are prohibited within the hill-station area. During rainy season Train Services are not regular. Taxi takes about 20 minutes to reach Dasturi Naka from Neral. To go around Matheran, one has to walk or avail the services of horses or handcart (single seater).State Transport buses regularly ply from Mumbai and Pune. A taxi from Neral to Matheran takes about half hour to reach. Taxis stop about 2.5 km from the centre of the hill station.Vehicles of any kind are not permitted in the town, which makes it a very quiet, serene place.

Local transportHorses and hand-pulled rickshaws are the only transport options in Matheran. From the Dasturi car park, it's a 30 minute walk to the centre, or you can hire a horse. Walking is quicker than being pulled along in a rickshaw.

Horses can be hired for around Rs.100 per hour for trots around to the view points.

By Air

By Foot

Matheran is popular among trekkers.

The more energetic trek it from Neral. Many enthusiastic hikers climb the hill from Neral on foot. It is a fairly stiff climb and takes at least two to three hours. Once one arrives at Matheran walking becomes a pleasure and must.

Dasturi gate (Matheran car park) is approximately 8 km from Neral junction and a beautiful landscape can be seen from Neral itself. Streams cut through the farms. One can follow the road or walk through the countryside along the stream and take the trail used by localities. There aren't direction signs along the trail, so you'll have to take directions from localities or trek keeping the road in sight.

The trail crosses farms, streams, railway track at several places to add to the stunning landscape. Trekkers can rest and enjoy a snack midway at Janmapatti rail station where the road and track meet. There are a few eateries run by localities. Second leg of the trek is difficult than the first as the path gets steeper. Following the road should get you to Dasturi gate after which one has to take the unpaved trail till Matheran Bazaar. All trails in Matheran are well marked and getting around shouldn't be difficult.

Matheran History

Matheran was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a popular resort to beat the summer heat in the region.

Matheran is connected to the town of Neral which lies at the base of the hills. A tar road connects Neral to Dasturi Naka which is 9 km (5.8 miles) from Matheran. In order to maintain Matheran's uniqueness,no vehicles are allowed beyond this point. The other mode of transport is a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge narrow gauge railway, which links the town to Neral. Neral also has a broad gauge station which is on the busy Mumbai-Pune route. Neral is well connected by railway line with Karjat being the nearest Junction. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12.4 miles), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway had been inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials in the last week of October 2009. The official declaration of its status as UNESCO world heritage site like other hill railways of India like Kalka-Shimla, Darjeeling hill railway & Nilgiri mountain railway will be declared by July 2010. The railway officials are very hopeful of getting the UNESCO world heritage status from the views expressed by the inspecting officials. The heritage status will boost the tourist activities in the area.

In the floods of July 2005, around 70% of the railway lines were damaged and did not reopen until April 2007 after repairs at a cost of Rs 2-2.5 crore[1].

Matheran has been declared an ecosensitive region by the Union Environment Ministry and can be called a Health Sanatorium in itself. The only form of automobile allowed in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the Municipality. No private automobiles are allowed. Within Matheran transport facilities available are horses and hand-pulled rickshaws.

Matheran is one of the popular getaway for people from Mumbai and Pune, it is a quiet hill station located on the Sahyadri range. Matheran, Meaning 'forest on top', was discovered in 1850, by a district collector of Thane, Hugh Poyntz Malet, and the foundations for its development was laid down by Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Mumbai. Matheran has been listed by the Union Environment Ministry as an eco-sensitive region and is connected to the closest town of Neral by a narrow gauge railway, operating since 1907. As no vehicles are allowed in Matheran, one has to drive up to Dasturi Point, 11 km ahead of Matheran, from where you could reach the main bazaar either by foot or on pony.

Matheran lies in an elevated region, enjoys a cooler and less humid climate which makes it popular during the summer months. Temperatures range from 32 °C (90 °F) to 16 °C (61 °F). Matheran has a huge number of medicinal plants and herbs. The town also has a large monkey population, including Bonnet Macaques and Hanuman Langurs. The nearby Lake Charlotte is the main source of Matheran's drinking water.

Languages spoken include Marathi, Hindi, and English. There are a lot of Parsi bungalows. Beautiful old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran. The roads are not metalled and are made of red laterite earth. There are many "points" (viewpoints) in Matheran which give a panoramic view of the plains below. On clear nights, the lights of Mumbai are claimed to be visible.
