A clinical psychologist practicing in California, Dr. Lisle has been at the forefront of developing a clear understanding of how self-esteem works. He is also very involved in the health effects of eating a plant-based diet. In today’s interview, we discuss both of these very important topics as they relate to mental health issues.

Dr. Lisle can be contacted through his website, esteemdynamics.org. He is also the author of a great book entitled The Pleasure Trap. In this book, he discusses the addictive nature of specific substances that we find commonly included in our Western diet.

My good friend, Julio Salazar, and two of his good friends will be running across Wisconsin to raise awareness of the need to defeat the stigma of mental health issues. I have significant pride in counting Julio as one of my friends. He works tirelessly to bring awareness to the problems faced by people with mental illness in their attempt to seek help and be accepted in our society. Last year, Julio completed a similar run across Minnesota. In the podcast today, we discuss the stigmatizing of mental health issues, out personal stories, and the upcoming run.

Information on the run can be found at http://www.defeatthestigmaproject.org.

For many years, one of my favorite podcasts has been Phedippidations. The host, Steve Runner (Walker) is our guest today. Steve has been a runner for many years and his podcast covers thoughts about the philosophy and psychology of running, how running effects relationships, and various other musings. I liken Steve to today’s George Sheehan.

Steve suffers from depression. It was a late onset depression that he has had to learn to deal with as an active runner. In today’s episode, Steve opens up about what depression has been like for him and the multiple ways he is changing his life to help his recovery.

My friend, Julio Salazar, first made my aware of Karl Hoppner as someone that I would want to interview. Karl lives in Ottawa, Canada. As a former cyclist in Canada and Belgium during his adolescence, depression and anxiety began to control his life. Using alcohol and drugs to help him cope took him further down the rabbit hole with depression. After listening to a podcast interview of Rich Roll, a notable endurance athlete who dealt with his addiction and poor health with exercise and eating a plant based diet, Karl decided to give it a try. He had some phenomenal results. I think you will really appreciate Karl’s story.

I am very pleased to present this episode’s interview with three time Olympic middle distance runner Suzy Favor Hamilton. Suzy was at the top of her game having competed at three Olympic games when her undiagnosed bipolar disorder became highly symptomatic. In her manic phase, she became involved in more risky behavior most evident in her sexual actions. From Olympian to a high end Las Vegas escort. Suzy is incredibly open about her bipolar disorder and it’s manifestations.

Her goal in being so authentic is to bring awareness to the public about bipolar disorder, it’s manifestations, and it’s treatment. She now is an advocate along with her husband and daughter in this endeavor.

Rarely have I found someone who has been as brave as Suzy.

You can find her on Facebook at Suzy Favor Hamilton.

In this episode, Julio and I interview Adam Sud, son of one of Whole Foods founders. Adam is a recovering addict. We hear about Adam’s fast drop in to drug abuse during high school while moving from using Adderall as prescribed for his ADHD to full addiction to the drug. He also discusses his addiction to food. Adam’s recovery began in a traditional treatment program, but what captured him was his medical diagnosis of Type II Diabetes and his commitment to treat this with a whole foods plant based diet. He lost over 100 pounds and became sober from addictive substances. We discuss his ideas about the treatment of addictive disorders from a wholistic perspective and the push back that he has experienced from traditional treatment.

Adam can be contacted at adasud@gmail.com

I am not personally aware of anyone who has coached more runners than Jeff Galloway. Over 300,000 in his career. Best known for being a proponent of the run-walk-run method, Jeff is also one of the most knowledgeable professionals on the psychological aspects of running.

In today’s episode, we discuss his history, how running effects mental health, and how mental training can help with performance. Jeff is a delightful and caring person. I know you will enjoy the interview.

Brett Wilcox is a therapist in Sitka, Alaska. He lives there with his wife, son, and daughter. Brett’s 15 year old son, David, a runner himself, proposed the idea of the two of them running across the United States to raise awareness of the negative effects of GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) in our food supply. They accomplished this earlier this year. I talk to Brett about how he thinks running effects mental health as a clinician, how running effects family life, and how becoming an activist to raise awareness of GMO’s came about.

Brett can be contacted through his website Runningthecountry.com. His book, We’re Monsanto: Feeding the World Lie After Lie is available on the website or through Amazon. His family’s run across the U.S. was incredibly expensive. If anyone can donate to help defray the expenses, please do so through the website as well.

On today’s podcast, I interview Roger Joslin, an Episcopal priest in Bentonville, Arkansas. We are continuing along the theme of our last few episodes by discussing the spiritual and meditative effects of running. While discussing these issues with one of my patients a few months ago, he recommended a book entitled Running the Spiritual Path: A Runner’s Guide To Breathing, Meditating, and Exploring the Prayerful Dimension of the Sport by Roger Joslin. I read the book and found it to be both inspirational and instructive. Father Joslin takes us on a journey along his own path over many years of dealing with emotional and spiritual issues and how his practice of meditative running has evolved.

On today’s episode, I interview Michael Sandler of www.mindfulrunning.org. Michael has been a professional athlete and has dealt with ADHD. In his search to become a better athlete while on long sessions on the bike, he began to become interested in mindfulness, the practice of awareness. The lessons that he took away from this search helped him quiet the distractions of ADHD and gave him the focus and patience to come back from several life threatening injuries.

Michael and his wife Jessica Lee live in Hawaii. They have recently produced a six-week training program teaching the process of becoming a mindful runner. The program is available through their website.

This was a very insightful and helpful interview that I believe you will all enjoy.

On today’s episode of the Running to Mental Health Podcast, I interview Marshall Ulrich. Let me list below some of his accomplishments:

Is that enough? Well, he has also raised over $839,500 for charity.

We talk about several issues. Marsh’s first wife died of cancer, so we discuss the effect of running on grief. We discuss his views on the effect of getting away from the world (particularly technology) into the natural environment and it’s effect on mental health. We finally discuss the aging process and how it affects running.

Marshall can be reached at his website, www.marshallulrich.com. He is open to people writing him at marsh@marshallulrich.com.

Please pick up his book, Running on Empty: An Ultramarathoner’s Story of Love, Loss, and a Record Setting Run Across America.

We began to talk about how running is used in therapy and the discussion turned to the spiritual effects of this discipline and how that begins to change a person in their quest to deal with psychological issues. So, that’s the topic that we will be addressing, even though we’ll get into some other things as well.

Dr. Gunn, as well as being in private practice, is a published author. Her books include In the Therapist’s Chair and Bare: Psychotherapy Stripped.

Dr. Gunn can be reached at her Facebook site, Jacqueline Simon Gunn, and her books can be seen at Amazon.com.

Patrick House won Season 10 of the Biggest Loser. He is from my home state of Mississippi. The boy knew how to eat, like most of us, unfortunately. It’s a classic story of a very good football player, a lineman, getting injured in college and continuing to eat like he did when he was playing. Toping out at over 400 pounds, married and with children, Patrick knew something had to change. In today’s episode, we discuss what led up to the health crisis, the drastic steps to change this, and how he maintains his focus on health now.

Patrick has a new book out called As Big as a House which can be purchased on his website, biggestloserpatrick.com.

On today’s episode, I interview Caleb Daniloff. I first became aware of Caleb when I read his book, Running Ransom Road, an autobiography of descent into addiction over many years and his recovery. Caleb’s road to recovery involved running as both a paradigm for understanding his addiction and a road to true sobriety. He is a journalist by trade living with his wife and daughter in Cambridge, MA.

Caleb presents some great insights into the effect of addiction on self and family and on how running can help in recovery.

Leave us some feedback on what you think.

Julio Salazar has struggled with depression and anxiety for most of his life. Born in Costa Rica and now living with his wife and children in Minnesota, Julio has courageously worked to overcome these issues with therapy, medication, and, of course, running. Recently he started a project to combat the stigma attached to seeking help for mental illness called Breaking the Stigma. In 2015, Julio plans on running across his state to increase awareness of this problem. In this episode, Julio tells his story. He can be found at Breakthestigmarun.com or Break the Stigma Project on Facebook.
