6. Select the Right Content Management System
It’s hard to believe that in 2015 there are still issues with CMS platforms not being SEO friendly. Tom Fanelli reminds us that there are “many CMS packages come designed with inadequate search engine optimization” because they don’t include:

Custom URL structures that can help with indexing.

For example, when Google rolled out Panda, eBay was penalized pretty severely. Why? Because eBay was using a strategy that used thin content and “doorway pages” - you know, the same things that Google has been trying to squash. As a result, “eBay lost around 75% of their terms from page one.”

Now, look at company like Adobe. By keeping up with the changes that were going on, the company was able “to implement a successful enterprise SEO strategy that brought more than 20 million SEO visits to one section of the Adobe.com site, increasing these types of visits from 4 percent to more than 60 percent in the first three years of the ongoing project.”

8. Be Patient
Remember, enterprise SEO takes time – just like any other type of SEO campaign. In fact, you may have to wait six months or more before you start to notice any changes – thanks in part to legal and technical issues. That’s why Ryan Chester over at Daily SEO Blog compares SEO to a “large cargo ship and will take some time to cross the ocean.”

Enterprise SEO does require special considerations, but many of the same principles apply. Invest in the right tools and follow the tools above to make sure your enterprise level company is making the most out of SEO.

Consider a blog. Most B2C brands (51 percent) don’t utilize blogs at all, while 60 percent of B2B brands use them as an easy way of establishing thought leadership on a regular basis. The key is consistency. Most companies post at least once a week (62 percent for B2Bs and 58 percent for B2Cs), so it’s important to keep pace.
Video is king. The overwhelming majority of both B2B (76 percent) and B2C (74 percent) marketers report video is their most effective form of content; however, this doesn’t mean quantity should trump quality.
Consider automation. Automation, although daunting in theory, provides a vital edge in reaching audiences, particularly for B2C brands that implement advanced techniques.
Score your leads. While 68 percent of B2B and 74 percent of B2C marketers report lead scoring as useful and effective, only 67 percent of B2Bs and 54 percent of B2Cs actually do it.
Create marketing personas. While 51 percent of companies report using marketing personas in some fashion, an overwhelming 90 percent of these companies report the practice as being effective.
Consider account-based marketing. Only 29 percent of B2B companies currently use some form of accounts in their marketing process, but of those that do 95 percent report the method as being effective.
Examine your SEO. In just the last year, SEO’s impact has grown 29 percent for B2C brands, bringing it to a tie with email for most positive ROI. There are new tools available every day to help even the least technical marketer take control of their SEO.
Focus on social media that works for you. For B2B companies, LinkedIn is reported to bring in the best revenue (37 percent), while Facebook remains the most popular (56 percent) for B2C companies.

Last night, Google pushed out a major local search algorithm update. The update has been pushed out to U.S. English based search results and seems to have had enough of a significant update that many SEOs, webmasters and local business owners have taken noticed. The update impacts both the organic local listings within Google Map Search and Google Web Search.

The algorithm is more tied into the traditional web search ranking signals, including search features from the knowledge graph, spelling corrections and other search features. Google also said there were relevancy improvements to distance and location ranking.

You can also use URL paths instead of hostnames. This means that if you have a blog page that is hosted on blog.yoursite.com, you can instead host it on www.yoursite.com/blog.

10. Remove Unnecessary CSS and HTML: Lighten the code of your website by removing any HTML or CSS that is not required. If your site is built on a CMS, chances are you have pre-installed CSS class and id ‘stubs’ that help design the theme. Remove unused class and ID declarations or combine multiple declarations into one.

11. Avoid Multiple Tracking Scripts: While it is wise to keep tabs on your website’s traffic stats, it is not advisable to use multiple tracking softwares as this may hinder the page load time. Using these headers makes the various components of a site, including images, stylesheets, scripts and flash, cacheable. This in turn minimizes HTTP requests and thus improves the page load time. With the use of Expires headers you can actually control the length of time that components of a web page can be cached, as shown in the example below:

The page elements that are rendered from the server open progressively in your browser as initiated by these style elements. From the navigation bar and logo to the page content, the visual progression of a loading website gives rich user experience, even if a user has a slow internet connection. Style sheets also improve the page load time.

In an SEO campaign you want as much authority to go to your homepage as possible. You submit your site to directories, write articles, post on social networking websites and make regular blog posts that appear on twitter. All this to increase the number of backlinks to your website. And this is a good thing. The problem arrises when you have more than one way to view your homepage (or any page, for that matter).

URL Canonicalisation refers to two or more ways to view the same content, for example http://www.example.co.uk/, http://example.co.uk/, http://www.example.co.uk/index.html, and http://example.co.uk/index.html all load the homepage.

Clever search engines will be able to tell that these are all the same page and pass the authority all to the same place, but other search engines will follow all these links and pass authority to each of them seperately, the overall result being that you do not rank as high as you should. Worse, they could see these as seperate pages and penalise them for having duplicate content.

By removing the additional ‘copies’ of the homepage, the remaining page will get all the authority and your site will raise in the rankings.

There are a number of ways to fix a canonicalisation problem, but it depends on the server you are using. What works on an apache server may not work on a windows server. Below are the most commonly accepted ways of fixing a canonicalisation problem:

Apache:

On an apache server we will use a .htaccess file. If you have an .htaccess file, open it in your text editor of choice. If you do not have a .htaccess file, then you will need to create one. Most text editors will have a problem with saving the file as .htaccess as you have not specified a filename, only an extension. To get around this, open your text editor of choice and save the file as htaccess.txt. When you upload the file to your server, rename it to .htaccess. Now, in your .htaccess file, copy the following code (changing the domain name, obviously):

In order for Analytics to display details about your AdWords keywords and costs, you must do one of the following:

Use Destination URL auto-tagging, or
Manually tag your keyword destination URLs with tracking variables.

Google created auto-tagging (turned "on" by default) so that large and small accounts could easily see how their AdWords keywords were performing from click to conversion and back to cost. Auto-tagging automatically associates a parameter with the click on your ad which then allows Analytics to report the details of the click, including which AdWords keywords brought a visitor to your site, which campaign that keyword was from, and how much that click cost. This information can then be associated with richer information within your Analytics reports, such as goal or e-commerce conversions, to give you a sense of how your AdWords spending is really performing.

The parameter used in auto-tagging is called "gclid" and will show up in your landing page URL when a user arrives at your site from your ad. For example, if your site is www.mysite.com, when a user clicks on your ad it will appear in the address bar as:

Note: A small percentage of websites do not allow arbitrary URL parameters and serve an error page when auto-tagging is turned on. Definition of Terms

# of conversions: A conversion is counted when an ad click leads directly to a user taking an action on your site. Multiple conversions from a single ad click are counted only as one conversion.
Average value: The total value of all conversions divided by the total number of conversions.
Code snippet: A small piece of HTML and JavaScript code that is inserted into the conversion completion page of your website (the Thank you for your purchase/sign-up/visit page).
Conversion: When a user completes a desired action on your site, such as a purchase or request for information. A conversion is the desired end result from a user visiting your site.
Conversion page: The page on your site that is displayed to confirm the completion of a desired action -- this is generally the Thank you for your purchase/sign-up/visit page.
Conversion types: The type (purchase/sale, signup, page view lead, or self-defined/customized) recorded in the generated code, allowing you greater specificity in your conversion statistics.

Cost / Conversion: The total cost divided by the total number of conversions. This statistic gives you the amount spent per conversion. Cost / Transaction: The total cost divided by the total number of transactions. This statistic gives you the average amount spent per transaction. Transactions are counted only for conversions from Google and some of our ad network sites. The cost-per-transaction is adjusted to reflect only the cost of ad clicks on which we can track conversions.
Total value: The total value generated by conversions of a specific tracking type, or tracking label. (Advanced option only.)
Transaction: A single occurrence of a conversion event. Multiple transactions can occur after a user clicks on your ad. For example, if a user clicks on your ad and makes two separate purchases on your site worth US$11 and US$12, you will see a report for one conversion from the ad, two purchase transactions and a total value of US$23. You can also consider a transaction a lead generation if a visitor fills out a form and provides particular information that your business finds valuable.
Value / Click: The conversion value generated per click. For example: Value / Click = Total value (total_value) / Total number of ad clicks (num_clicks). Conversions are only counted on Google and some of our ad network sites. The conversion rate is adjusted to reflect only the ad clicks on which we can track conversions. (Advanced option only.)
Value / Cost: Total value divided by total cost for all ad clicks. If you've entered in your revenue or profit value, this statistic will be equal to your ROI. For example: Value / Cost = Total conversion value (total_value) / Total cost (total_cost). Conversions are only counted on Google and some of our ad network sites. The value-per-cost is adjusted to reflect only the cost of ad clicks leading to conversions. (Advanced option only.)

A/B Testing: Creating two nearly identical documents (webpages/newsletters/ads, etc) for the purpose of testing which copy produced a better result. The best producing document is then kept as the “control” and a new nearly identical document is created to test against.
Above the fold: This is a term used to describe content that is near the top of a webpage and is visible without having to scroll down the page to view it.
Agent: Crawlers/Spiders are also referred to as “agents”. This is when Google or another search engine visits your web page and “crawls” the contents to determine what your site is about, if it has been updated recently, or if it down.
Alt Attribute: Used in images, this HTML tag provides alternative text or description of the image.
Alt Tags: Used in images, this HTML tag provides the image name or description that you see if you hover your mouse over the image. This is often used to make your page more accessible to individuals with disabilities such as people who may have a vision impairment and use a device that reads the contents of a webpage to them.

Anchor Text: Anchor text is the text portion of a link that you click on when an address isn’t displayed. An example of this would be (Bay Area SEO). Google uses anchor text to help determine what keywords your site may focus on, and using appropriate anchor text is an important search engine optimization technique.
Authority: A site that is deemed as an “authority” site will generally have better search engine result placement and page-rank. Authority is primarily determined by relevant content and incoming links.
Average Page Views: The amount of pages within a site a user visits within one session (one session is equal to one visit, meaning if the user leaves and returns later this counts as two sessions)
Average Time on Site: The average amount of time a user spends on your website.

Backlinks: Backlinks are links from other sites that point to your site.
Bait & Switch: This is a technique used by black hat SEO’s and involves displaying one web page to search engines and a completely different page for other user agents at the same URL. It generally creates an optimized page targeting specific keywords and submits this page to a search engine or directory, but replaces that page with the regular page as soon as the optimized page has been indexed.
Banned: If your website has been penalized and removed from the search engine results, it is considered to be banned.
Black Hat SEO: This is a term used in the type of SEO you want to avoid and is against search engine guidelines. Using Black Hat techniques can get your site banned from Google – and chances are you won’t be able to get it back into search results.

Following are Black Hat tactics to avoid:

Hidden text or Hidden links – Links or text which is the same color as the background of your page.
Artificially increasing the number of links to your site: Sites which hold are wide repository of links are considered by Google as “link farms” and receiving a wide number of incoming links from “link farms” will have a negative effect on your site.
Duplicated content: Content copied from other sites and used on yours.
Excessive pop ups
Bait & Switch techniques
Spamming other websites or forums to place your link on their site.
Keyword stuffing: Using a keyword so many times that the context makes little to no sense.
Cross linking: An excessive amount of cross linking with sites to increase your websites popularity.
Blacklist: Black lists are created by organizations to create a database of websites, ip addresses or users who are known for black hat tactics, hacking attempts or other shady practices.

Body (Body Copy): The body of your text – text that is visible to users and doesn’t include code, navigational content, or images.
Bot: Another name for Agent, Crawler or Spider

Cache: Copies of your web pages that are stored locally (on a visitors computer). This helps web pages to load quicker as it will show the “cached” version of the webpage if you hit the back-button instead of having to re-load the entire contents again.
Canonical URL: Choosing a URL structure that will be your primary structure, and notifying search engines to ignore all others. Not having a proper canonical URL setup results in duplicate content penalties, as search engines will view all URL versions of a webpage as different websites. Examples would be:

Cannibalization: This is often referred to as either “Keyword Cannibalization” or “SEO Cannibalization”. This occurs when certain pages of your website compete against one another for certain keywords.

Class C IP: (No not Classy IP’s! ) There are four parts to an IP address. These part (first three digits) consist of “Class A”. The second part (second three digits) count as Class “B”, the third part consisting of Class C.

Cloaking: When a website or webpage shows different content to visitors than it does to search engines. Cloaking is similar to the “bait and switch” tactic where code is placed to show spiders optimized content, fooling the search engine into thinking the webpage is optimized for something it is not and placing it higher in search results. When a visitor clicks on this page, they often see completely different and possibly unrelated content. This is a black hat tactic that will result in getting banned from the search engines.

Conversion Rate: The percentage of your website visitors which convert – or perform a “goal” or intended action. This could be purchases, newsletter sign-ups, free trial downloads, etc.

Cookie: A small piece of code, or information that is stored on a users computer. This is generally used for websites to remember who you are, such as storing passwords, email addresses, etc. I t can also be used to track a visitors navigation through the site and how many times they have visited.

Crawler: Same as a spider, Bot or Agent

Custom error pages: This generally refers to customizing your 404 page, or page that a user sees when the content they were searching for could not be found.

Directory: A website that is a directory of other websites. These can often be grouped into specific categories, or the directory itself could focus on a specific niche or category. An example would be DMoz.
Domain Trust: Domain trust is calculated by various factors such as who you link to (reputable sites, spammy sites, etc) who links to you, your domain age and your domain registration information.
Domain Authority: The number of root domains which link to different pages on your website (rather than getting all links pointing directly to your homepage).
Doorway pages: This is also known as a “bridge page” or a “gateway” page. This is basically a webpage created with a lot of keyword rich content without much useful information. The intent is to have links which will lead the visitor to another main website.
Dynamic: Content or URL’s that are generated on the fly from a database

Error page: A web page that cannot be displayed due to an error, such as a 404 or “file not found” error.

Findability: How easy it is to find your site in the search engine results
Flash: Allows webmasters to display interactive media on webpages. This is often seen in website intros, games and animated navigation. The use of flash is generally not a recommended SEO practice, although search engines have made recent developments to now read flash.
Frames: Frames combine two web pages into one, allowing you to display content from one webpage within another. They may each have their own scrollbar, or part of the page my scroll while the rest of the page does not move. Search engines don’t like frames, as the content within the frame is difficult to crawl, though they do support them. You can also use a noframes tag in HTML to help crawlers index the page normally.
Fresh: Often used when referring to content. Fresh, unique content is the best for search engine optimization. With fresh content, Google will revisit the page and update it more frequently.
Funnel: A path which visitors follow before arriving at a “goal” page or completing a specific action. In Google Analytics you can create funnels which have up to 10 pages.

Gateway Page: Also known as a “doorway page” or a “bridge page”. Gateway pages are generally very low quality pages containing little content. They exist in order to drive users to another website and are often easy to indentify.
Goal Abandonment Rate: The percentage of users who exited your website or your funnel before reaching your goal page.
Google Bombing: Google Bombing, or a Google Bomb refers to when a lot of webmasters will get together and agree to link to a specific website using an unflattering term. This takes advantage of the importance of anchor text within a link, and will generally cause a page to rise in search results for an unflattering term. An example of this is when George Bush’s White House bio was displayed when anyone Googled the term “miserable failure”. This has since been changed, and it has become harder to Google Bomb a website.
Google Bowling: Google bowling is a black hat technique used to knock pages out of the search engine results, or significantly lower them. People sabotage websites this way by pointing hundreds of low quality links to a competitor’s site. Newer sites are generally more susceptible to this as older sites are better established with a range of high quality links.
Google Dance: This references a time when Google’s indexes are being updated. During this time, you may notice drastic differences in the rankings of your site and/or keywords.
Googlebot: A search bot used by Google.
Grey Hat SEO: SEO that users a combination of both white hat and black hat tactics

Google Supplemental Index: Google’s supplemental index is a database that contains websites relegated to “supplemental” results. These are pages Google has deemed unworthy to be displayed in regular search results because they feel they are untrustworthy. If your page is in the supplemental index, this means that the site will not show up in search results unless there are no other results to display for the term you searched for.

Reasons your site may be sent to the Supplemental Index include:

Black Hat Techniques
Duplicated Content
Lack of trust
A site with a very large number of pages
Page freshness
Excessively long URL’s.
You used to be able to distinguish supplemental results from regular results because Google placed a tag next to any result being pulled from its supplemental index. As of 2007, this tag has been removed making it very difficult to determine where a site may be pulled from.

Hard 404′s: The standard 404 error page that is displayed when a server returns the response code 404.
Heading Tag: This can also be referred to as {H1, H2, etc}. This is an HTML reference that explains the section on a web page. Titles are usually placed in heading tags. The text placed within these tags are often considered slightly more important to the content on the page than normal text would be.
Hidden Keywords: Keywords which are placed on a webpage and are hidden to visitors, but viewable by spiders.
Hidden Text: The practice of hiding text on a webpage so that spiders can see and read it, but users cannot. The reason this is done is to create more content and keywords for a page. This however is a black hat tactic and can harm your rankings.
Hijacking: Hijacking refers to a practice that makes search engines believe a website actually exists at another URL. It is similar to search engine spam and cloaking. This is used to increase rankings in search engine results for a particular term. This is also an illegal black hat tactic
HTML: This stands for “Hyper Text Markup Language” and this is a programming language.
HTML Source: Raw programming code. You can view this by right clicking on a page and choosing “view source”
HTTP: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This is the protocol used when a web browser communicates with a web server to request and retrieve data.
HTTPS: A secure Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
Hubs: A hub is a list of centralized websites that link to many related topics on authority websites.
Hyperlinks: Links that you click on within a webpage to be brought to another page or website.

Inbound Links: Links that point to your website from other websites.
Index: A search engines database that stores information about websites.
Inlinks: Also refers to backlinks, generally used by Yahoo!
Internal Links: This is a link that points to another page on the same site. If I were to link to my homepage in this example, this would be considered an internal link. This also refers to any links within a pages navigation.
Internal Redirect: Also known as a silent redirect, this is a redirect that a search engine can’t see.
ISAPI_Rewrite: A module written in C and C++ programming language that is used within an IIS server. This works like the Mod_rewrite rule.

Javascript: A programming language. These scripts run on a users computer rather than the webserver’s.

Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s): Helps organizations achieve goals through defining the measurement and progress of a campaign.
Key Phrase (Keyword Phrase): A search made up of keywords
Keyword: A single word that a search engine user would search for in hopes of bringing up relevant useful website results for that term. Your website should target Keywords and Keyword Phrases that searchers will use to find you.
Keyword Density: The amount of times a keyword is displayed within the text on the page. If your keyword appears multiple times, it will have a higher keyword density than a keyword which doesn’t display at all.
Keyword Popularity: Occurrences of how many times a particular keyword or keyword phrase has been searched during a specified period of time.
Keyword Prominence: The location of a keyword on your webpage. The higher up a keyword is, the more prominent it is considered to be by search engines. Keyword placement and prominence is a necessary part of any search engine optimization strategy.
Keyword Research: Researching keywords to determine the competition, the monthly searches and finding new keywords and phrases that people use to find sites similar to yours. These are then compiled into a list for your own use.
Keyword Stuffing: The act of including an excessive amount of keywords in your page text and HTML. If the keywords are listed so often that it affects the readability of your site, this can have a negative effect on your search results. Keyword stuffing would be determined by search engines by having a very high Keyword Density.

Landing Page: Usually a singular webpage that is used to direct users to a page focused on specific information about a product or service you offer, with a call to action and information on how to purchase or sign up. These are also used in Adwords campaigns.
Link Bait: Link baiting is the one form of link building and it aims to increase the quantity of high-quality, relevant links to a website through any content or feature, within the website, designed specifically to gain attention of others to link to the website.
Link Building: The process of requesting links from other webmasters who own sites that are relevant to yours. This can also include directory submissions and press releases. Sites also offer “paid links” promising to do the link building for you. This is not an advisable practice to participate in.
Link Farm: A group of websites that are all interlinked with the purpose of inflating their link popularity. This is a form of spam.
Link Popularity: How many other websites have linked to your website. The more pages linking to you, the better.
Link Spam: Links between pages specifically set up to take advantage of link calculating algorithms to artificially inflate your link popularity.
Linkwheel: A group or “hub” of websites that link to one another in a circular fashion.
LSI: Meaning Latent Semantic Indexing – which is the hypothesized indexing method/database used by Google. Some argue that latent semantic indexing would not be pragmatic, though some form of latent analysis and indexing is definitely used whether it is LSI or another method.

Malaware: A malicious program containing a virus that is often downloaded to your machine without your knowledge.
Meta Data: The HTML area toward the “head” of a site that displays various Meta Tags
Meta Description: The message tag displayed at the top of your website, within the HTML code. This is placed in the Meta Data section and provides a brief description of your website. This description should be between 12 and 20 words. This is what will be displayed under your Website Title in search results.
Meta Keywords: HTML tag displayed in the source code at the top of your website. This is placed in the Meta Data section and provides a list of keywords relevant to your site. This has been abused by search engine spammers using black hat techniques, that this no longer provides a major benefit to your site, and is advisable to not waste time on them.
Meta Tags: HTML tags of information associated with a website, such as title, description, keywords and author.
Microblogging: Microblogging is providing group of people with news/information using a very short amount of text/words to describe it. Sites like Twitter are considered microblogging sites.
Mod_Rewrite: A module used in Apache that can be used to rewrite requested URLs on the fly. It supports an unlimited number of rules and attached rule conditions.

Negative SEO: The practice of attempting to demote a webpage or site from the search engine results. Mostly used by competitors, and is an unethical practice.

Off Page Optimization: This covers techniques used indirectly, such as gaining incoming links to your website. These help your SEO but do not deal with your page directly.
On Page Optimization: This covers techniques used directly on your landing page or website to optimize its visibility in search results. These techniques are directly controlled by you, such as keyword density, HTML, and meta tags.
Organic Results: This is when people view and get to your page directly from search engine results and not from paid traffic or advertisements.
Outbound Links: Links that are directed to another website from your website.

Page Rank (PR): Page rank is a score Google gives a web page based on how trustworthy and relevant the website appears to be. The main factor of page rank is your link popularity. Google takes a lot into account when judging your links and gives some links a higher score while other links may negatively affect your score.
The scale ranges from 0-10 with 0 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Each rank is harder to achieve the higher you get
There is an ongoing debate over the importance of Page Rank to SEO.
Page Rank Sculpting: A hyphothetical strategy that involves placing a “nofollow” attribute on specific links and pages in order to direct the flow of page-rank to another page in an attempt to increase that pages importance.
Portal: A separate site used to function as an access point to another website. These can be authoritive hubs that link to a website.

Query: A keyword or phrase typed into a search engine to return results.

Query String: A portion of a URL which often appears after a question mark( ? )

QDF: “Query Deserves Freshness”, sometimes also referred to as “Quality Deserves Freshness”. For example, if a blog post is created about a specific trending topic, that post may be added to the search index quicker as it directly relates to the current trend.

Reciprocal Linking: Trading links between websites.

Redirect: Redirecting one site to another. This happens automatically without the user needing to click on anything. There are two main types of redirects, the 301 which lets the search engines know your site has been permanently moved to another, and the 302 which tells search engines the website has been “temporarily moved”.

Referrer: If a user finds your website by clicking on a link provided on another website, the website they arrived from would be considered the referrer.

Relevance: How relevant your website is to a search term entered, and the likelihood of your website appearing in results for that term.

Robot: Same as Googlebot, crawler or spider.

ROI: Return on investment. The benefit gained from investing budget into advertising, SEO or Social Media. Total revenues generated from the campaign minus total costs.

Search Engine Results Page (SERP): The search results provided after you type in a query, keyword or phrase.
SEM: Search Engine Marketing. Involves strategies to increase the number and quality of leads generated by search engines.
SEO: Search engine optimization. The practice of optimizing your website for better placement in search engine results. Involves three steps including technical optimization, on-page optimization and off-page optimization.
Semantic Analysis: What search engines use to determine semantically relevant phrases within a pages content.
SMO: Social Media Optimization: Strategy and methods for social media marketing.
Soft 404: An error page which returns a header status code of “200 ok” rather than 404. This is not recommended.
Spam: Manipulation of various techniques that violate search engine terms.
Spamdexing: Same as spamming.
Spamglish: Keyword rich nonsense that appears as pure gibberish to any human trying to read it. Often includes meaningless sentences and keyword repetition in order to inflate your ranking for a specific term.
Spider: Also known as a bot, robot, crawler or agent. These are programs used by search engines to explore the web and your website and retrieve content about what that site is about.
Stop characters: Certain words and characters such as the ampersand (&) equal sign (=) and question mark (?). When these are used in URL’s these make websites believe that the URL is dynamic. It is not recommended to use these as search engines do not usually index dynamic websites.
Stop Word: A search engine won’t bother indexing certain common words, such as “the”, “a”, “an”, “of”, and “with”. These words are basically ignored. Including stop words in title tags or URLs waters down their density and should be avoided.

Taxonomy: Classification of controlled vocabulary used to organize topical subjects – generally hierarchical in nature.

Theme: The main focus of your website or webpage.

Title Attribute: Supplementary information about a specific element.

Title Tag: The text displayed at the very top of your browser window, above the “back” “forward” and “refresh” buttons. If you are using Google Chrome you may not see this information.

A very important line of text for search engine optimization. The words in this text are given more weight, and this text is generally what is displayed in search engine results.

Trackback: A notification that someone has linked to a document on your site. This helps authors keep track of who is linking to their articles.

Usability: How friendly a website is to visitors, and the ease of use in which they can find their way around your site, or perform an action or task.

User Agent: The name of the browser/spider that is currently visiting a page. For example, “Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.google.com/bot.html)”

USG (User Generated Content): Content created and published (or added to) by the end user. This consists of videos and podcasts as well as sites like forums, wiki’s, blogs and social media sites.

Visibility: How well placed your website is in search engine results.

Web 2.0: Refers to the new generation of web-based services and communities that are generally characterized by participation, collaboration and sharing of information.

Web 2.0 applications include wiki’s, folksonomies, blogs, and other social networking sites.

White Hat SEO: Ethical SEO that follows search engine guidelines.

XML: Extensible Markup Language – this is a scripting language that allows a programmer to define the properties of a document.

XML Sitemap: A sitemap generated in Google’s required XML format. A sitemap is a map to all pages on your sites.

You can edit your post in Edit HTML mode, and type  where you'd like the jump link to appear.

To add the code for Jump Links functionality to your Blogger template...
Go to Layout>Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard and ensure you have checked the "Expand widget templates" box.

Display/Hide Blogger Widget on Specific Pages in Blogger

When you add a widget (or a gadget as Blogger would call it) to your blog, by default the widget would appear on all pages –homepage, index, archive, post and static pages. But what if you want a certain widget to appear only on a certain page or pages, can it be done? In other words can you select on which page/pages the widget would or would not appear? The answer is yes you can -by using Blogger conditional tags. Note: This trick doesn't work with Labels, Archive and Followers gadgets. For these gadgets you want to use the CSS's display none method.

Let us proceed,

1. Find your widget or section Id

To address a widget or a section in HTML, you need to know its Id. Here’s how to find a widget or section Id. In url of the widget, you will get widget id like HTML4

2. Locate the widget code in HTML

Go to Dashboard > Design > Edit HTML.

Check the Expand Widget Templates check box on top right of the HTML window.

Find your widget in the HTML by using Ctrl+F and entering the widget Id in the search box.

Your widget code might look like this. It may be a little different, but it’s okay. Just pay attention to the highlighted lines. Widget content is contained in between those two lines -in "includable" section.

3. Choose the appropriate conditional tag

I listed some conditional tags in another post -Targeting specific pages with conditional tag. Copy your desired tag from there and apply it here.

4. Apply the tag

Paste the tag (from step 3) immediately after <b:includable id='main'> and the code line 11 to 15 immediately before </b:includable>, as shown below.

Replace WidgetID in line 13 with the widget ID from code line 1.

The code will check whether the condition is true or false:

If the result is true, it executes (and display) the widget’s content.

If the result is false, it skips the content and hide the widget.
You need to hide the widget because in most templates the content-less widget will still appear -as an empty box.

5. Save and view

Click Save Template button and view your blog.

Overdoing url removals

If you have a lot of urls that you don’t want in Google anymore, you can make the pages return a 404 and wait for Googlebot to recrawl/reindex the pages. This is often the best way. You can also block out an entire directory or a whole site in robots.txt and then use our url removal tool to remove the entire directory from Google’s search results.

What I would not recommend is sending tons (as in, thousands or even tens of thousands) of individual url removal requests to the url removal tool. And I would definitely not recommend making lots (as in, dozens or even more) of Webmaster Central accounts just to remove your own urls. If we see that happening to a point that we consider excessive or abusive, we reserve the right to look at those requests and responding by e.g. broadening, cancelling, or narrowing the requests.

I get lot of request each day asking for an SEO Job but I normally do not take any SEO work for clients but I see that many of my clients complain about the SEO people they have hired have not done anything about SEO and have charged them quite a good amount of money. How long they have been into SEO?
The first and the most important thing you should understand is SEO is not an overnight task and they have to be in it for quite a long period of time for making any success. So ask the same to your SEO provider? How long have you been doing this? Verify the same with their domain who is information and see if they have been doing SEO for so long.
How much they have worked SEOed themselves rather than clients?
The main reason I do not take up SEO job is I am too busy with SEO of my own forum and blog and if I can get my site ranked well I would make more money than any client can pay me. Do they think the same and have their own site or product which they rank very well.
How transparent are they when it comes to working for you?
The next thing you should ask is how they will go about getting good rankings for your site. It may not be exactly what they would do but mainly the strategy. Let them do some keyword research or even go beyond it to analyze your competitors’ site and their strategy. If they talk about too many jargons like PageRank / NoFollow get familiar with them.
To add to this question many SEO experts (as they liked to be called) tend to give that this is something where they have some backdoor entry into Google and can rank you pretty well in Google by paying them and they cannot disclose anything beyond this. This is complete bullshit and you should never even think about replying to such peoples’ emails. Google never wants their users to get results influenced by such sick minded people and never even encourages such people.

People always like bonus and it’s my turn now to give one. Ask them about what they should avoid when it comes to SEO and see how well they are aware of blackhat SEO and how they avoid them.

Many a times am asked what are the basic SEO tactics to know and keep in mind. Well if one starts to explain this then the list can be a little overwhelming. However to keep matters a little simple I would suggest the below so as to be a little more effective:

Key Word Research And Optimization: Before going into any detail you would first require to do a proper keyword research. Key words are the search words that your target audience would be keying into search sites say for instance Google. The key word research would be done in two parts. At first level you need to check on what does your target audience search. The second part you need to check out on is what keywords do your competitors optimist. Usually the two would be more or less similar however it is good to check out. Post your findings you then need to decide on which key words you will emphasis on and optimize. These would be in tandem with the brand personality and image that you may already have or you may want to create. You will need to be clear on what is the brand philosophy because without this you will not be able to be in-sync with the rest of the brand - customer perception.
On-Page Content Keyword Optimization: Once you have frozen on your key words you need to then make it a conscious effort to utilize the same words. This is known as key word density. However it does not mean that you use the words so often that the reader has no other words to look at. Too much of density makes search spiders also suspicious and they may choose to not follow your page. The algorithms in the search engines are very much tuned to such spams. They can detect such things and can almost ban your page as a matter of speaking. Hence you do use the words but in a creative manner.
File Name: While working at server level you will have many files to upload and save. This could be either for dynamic data or static information. The search engine scans through these as well. Page Title And H1 Headline: I would encourage you to be creative. However do not be so creative that the keywords are missing from your titles, headlines and sub heads.
Image Alt Tag: Many a times I have noticed that while saving the images we do not mention the proper names instead we call them image1, image2 and so on. A very important fact is that you are missing out on great amount of search spider attraction material.
Link Building: This is another important aspect of SEO. While working it is imperative to have a Link Strategy in mind as well. Links direct and guide the search engine crawlers towards your main page / blog / site. Links work as arrow indicators on highway for the speeding spiders and crawlers. The moment we get into this zone the algorithms at search engine start to flag this as they recognize spamming actions. Social networking 'leads to sex faster'

Facebook, texting and other social networking tools make new couples to jump into bed faster, reveals a new US survey.

According that third annual sex survey by Shape and Men's Fitness magazines, nearly four out of five women and three of five men say that digital intimacy leads to having sex faster, reports a foreign news agency.

However, only 38 percent of women said they have actually slept with a date any sooner because of online intimacy.

Smart phones and laptops are the new toys that lead to the bedroom, it said, with nearly 80 percent of women and 58 percent of men saying social media tools leads to sex faster.

Moreover, texting is the topmost way lovers keep in touch, with men texting 39 percent more often than calling and women 150 percent more.

As many as 65 percent of those polled said they had been asked out by text and 49 percent through a Facebook message.

And as soon as the relationship clicks, 72 percent of women reported scouring a current partner's ex-girlfriends' Facebook pages.

Even in the heat of passion, some people just can't get enough of their digital devices, the survey found.

When a call or text comes in during sex, five percent of respondents said they glance to see who is calling and one percent said they stop to answer the phone.

And when the spark is extinguished, digital dumping is the new way to break up, with 43 percent of women and 27 percent of men reporting getting a text along the lines of "It's not you, it's me."

For the heartbroken, the Internet keeps hope alive, with 81 percent of all respondents saying they won't de-friend an ex on Facebook and 75 percent admitting to constantly checking a former sweetheart's page. (ANI)

People fly through the web these days pausing for a second at a time on sites these days so if they are taking time to leave a comment oon your blog then the very least you can do is stop and answer them. If you look closely you’ll notice that on almost every single blog out there you’ll see something known as Google Adsense, If your unfamiliar with them and don’t know how they work, its rather quiet simple, you take some code place it in your blog and from there Ads are displayed from thousands of publishers who use Google Adworks and when someone clicks on one of those ads you make money.

If I had to guess I would say that at least 70 to 80 percent of people who use Google Adsense have no real clue how to maximize their profit with them, most people just set up some ads and place them on their site and don’t do anything else, if you are one of these people then you are not making as much as you should be by doing this and I’m going to explain some ways of how you can improve your profit with them.

First I want to point out that every blog will generate different amounts of money by using Google Adsense, this is because the Ads come from people who are paying Google Adwords to display them and some people pay more then others, so a blog about the sky might not pay as much then a blog about technology because the technology sector is much more competitive then the sky and people will pay more to have their ads displayed.

So how do we get an idea of the amount of money we can generate using Adsense when we are not allowed to discuss it?. Well one of the simplest ways is to use the Google Adwords External Keyword Tool. Using this tool is extremely simple, lets say you’ve got a blog about Computers and in the majority of your posts you use the word “Computers”, what you do is type “Computers” into the tool and press “Get More Keywords”, this will generate a list of several keywords that people are paying for, what you want to focus on is the green bar under “Advertiser Competition”, the higher the green bar, the more competitive that keyword is and the more money you’ll make if ads about that keyword are being displayed on your blog.

That sounds fairly straight forward doesn’t it? Now comes the question of targeting those keywords, most people think that there is no way to tell Google which Ads to display, this is a common myth surrounding Adsense, now you cannot exactly tell Google to display car ads on a biology blog, that simply will not happen, but lets say your using the word “Computers” in the majority of the posts you make and from what we can tell from the Adwords Tool the keyword “Computers” is very competitive and it should pay quiet well.

What you can do is place these two bits of code around the text that you want Google to target, the first one looks like this and the last one looks like this what these two tags will tell Google is that instead of taking every keyword on your blog, it will only take the keywords in the text between these two tags. This will refine how well Google displays ads on your site.

If your using Blogger or some other sort of blogging program the easiest way would be to wrap these two tags around the tag in your template, from there Google will only display ads based upon which keywords each of your posts have. Google will generally display ads based upon how much your keyword density is, so if your using the keyword “Computers” in the majority of your posts, you’ll get more relevant ads about Computers and we know that this keyword should pay quiet well and you’ll be making more money from it.

Now I want to cover one more tag that you can use with Google Adsense if you don’t want to use the two tags I just talked about, they have another tag which looks like this and when you wrap these tags around certain parts of your blog, Google will simply ignore all the keywords in those sections, as you can tell by doing this you get much more control over the type of ads that are being displayed and once you use these systems together you can start to maximize your potential profit with Google Adsense.

These few examples will help you increase the amount of money you get when someone clicks on your ads and it will allow Google to target the content on your site much better, by having more relevant ads on your site you should see your click through rate begin to go up.

The last thing you should be aware of is the colors of your ads, the size of your ads, and the frequency of the ads showing up on any given page. The first thing you want to do is make your ads blend in with the rest of the content, you don’t want to make people think all your after is a bunch of clicks, you want them to flow very nicely with the rest of your content, so if the majority of the links on your site are blue then make your Adsense links blue and if your text is black make the Adsense text black and so on.

The size of your ads also influences the amount of clicks your going to get, if you blatantly place huge ads all over your site people will start to trust you less and when you loose a readers trust you loose that much more clicks, its better to provide your users with quality content and ads that don’t say “HEY CLICK HERE”. Have a look at this particular blog and see how I’ve got my Adsense blocks laid out, as you’ll see they blend in quiet well, they obviously could blend in a little bit better because they do pop out a bit but they don’t scream at the user, this mixed with good quality content makes the stand out more acceptable.

The very last thing is the frequency of the ads being displayed on your blog, Google only allows you to display 3 ad blocks on any one page, so if you try to place twelve ad blocks only three will show ads and the rest won’t even be noticeable, as well you have to remember that the more ads being shown on your site takes away from the amount of money you’ll get per click, I’m unsure of exactly how this all works with Google but simply put the more ads means less money.

Now I’m not telling you to only display one ad on your entire blog to gain maximum profit, you could but you won’t be reaching maximum profit, simply because the less ads you have displayed means the less people will click on them and the less money you’ll make. The best way to deal with this is to test different ad placement on your site to see which area’s gain you the most amount of clicks while maintaining the least amount of ads, you can monitor your results in Google Adsense.

Just keep an eye on your CTR (Click Through Rate) and remember how many ads are being displayed on any particular page, you’ll eventually find exactly how many ads you should be displaying and which area’s those ads should appear. If you employ all of these techniques there is no reason why your Adsense profit should not go up.

How to Install Wordpress Blog in Local Host

There are several steps that are required to install the wordPress successfully on the localhost. so just simply follow these steps :

1. This step requires you to download the wordPress software.
Visit: http://wordpress.org/download/ to download your copy of WordPress.

2. After downloading the software , simply extract in the root directory of the server. ( www directory in case of wamp and htdocs in case of xampp/lampp). Place the contents in a folder named as WordPress.

3. Now start the local server and in the browser screen point to the following URL : http://localhost/wordpress/

4. You will be faced with an error message regarding the configuration file.

To rectify this error there are two ways.

Either you go manually and rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php and then manually enter your database details
Else you can go by the graphical user mode. This mode is a preferred one

5. We will proceed via the GUI Mode. First of all we will create a database using the PHPMyAdmin so that all the sample data of the WordPress is installed in it.

Open the PHPMyAdmin using the URL http://localhost/phpmyadmin

Then click the Let’s Go button on the Web GUI to initiate the installation of the WordPress on the localhost.

Now understand what have to be filled here in the text fields.

Database Name: It is the name of database where the sample data of the WordPress will be installed. Since we already made a database using PHPMyAdmin named as WordPress , type in this name

User Name: This specifies the user who will use the database. Since the installation is done on local machine we will designate our user as root.

Password: This will authenticate the user to access the database. This is left as blank in this case.

Database Host: It is the host computer on which the database resides. Since for local installations the host designated is localhost.

Table Prefix: It is used when we want to run multiple installation on the same database. Leave it as default which is provided in the text field.

6. Finally click on the Submit button. And if everything goes right you will be faced with the following screen:

The above window shows that wp-config.php has not been written. To rectify this error just go to your web directory and copy paste the matter written in text box into a new file named as wp-config.php. After that just hit Run The Install button.

7. If everything goes according to the plan, you will be faced with famous five minute WordPress installation process. Just enter the personal details and password.

Finally click Install WordPress.

8. Now login to your website’s admin panel at http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin to customize its looks and settings.

9. To have a first look of your new setup wordpress site simply enter this URL: http://localhost/wordpress/

Congratulations! you have successfully installed the WordPress on the local computer
