Decent text, lame exercises, April 19, 2000

I am sort of in between all the other reviwers on this one. The text seems okay for a intro. into the subject. There is enough information to teach a class and I assume it _is_ designed for someone with little to no previous knowledge in computer architecture. Although it sure does help when they hit assembly language instructions in chapter 3!

That's why it's so confusing when you hit the exercises in the back of each chapter. Where did these come from? Very little of it can be answered by reading the book, the teacher of my class was only able to answer the questions due to experience outside of the field. Most of the answers start with "it depends on . . ." and the answers really didn't come from anywhere in the book. Most of the questions are trick questions and this isn't a way to teach, but it is a way to confuse the reader. I guess I'm reviewing the book in the same way the book reads. Sorry. And sorry to anyone required to use this text!

First of all, this book is a very dry read; extremely boring. The concepts aren't very clear and the book as a whole is unorganized; the first chapters refer to things in later chapters and makes everything hard to comprehend. The questions in the back of the chapters are difficult to ansewr because the content of the chapters don't help in answering them. In addition, there is a countless amount of spelling errors and numerical errors in the book. And this is the 6th edition of the book!! I expected so much more from this!! It makes me angry that this book is so bad. The cover is nice though if you get the hardcover edition, but i suggest getting the cheaper international edition because there are no color diagrams in the entire book. What a waste of 100 dollars!!

I think that this book gives an excellent and in depth review of the CG Animation World. Yes, two chapters are about the history of CG: they will tell you where you come from and make you understand better where you are now.
I don't know who this hwilliamsx comes from, and what he is doing in VA, I'm an Animation Supervisor working at Imageworks for the past seven years and I am a Faculty Member at Calarts for three, my personal opinion is that this book is a must have.
Third Edition speak by itself. Good work Isaac.

This is an excellent book if you want a very thorough explanatory treatment of the subject of 3D computer graphics and animation ... very in-depth, very appropriate for use as a college textbook ... so that by the time you are finished with it (many months from now) you'll really understand how things "fit." Take your time and read slowly and carefully. The book's editorial design is conducive to that.

I find that "getting the big picture" in any technical subject is the most difficult task. Existing practitioners usually know it so well they can't explain it. This author can. As you can see on his bio (www.about3d.com), he's got the credits. I selected the book primarily for this purpose, and certainly got what I was expecting.

The book assembly style gets a little TEDIOUS with loads of BOLD-FACE type on many pages (every KEY PHRASE is BOLD, which kinda gets in the way) but that's an editorial quibble.

I hope that the next edition will include Ambient Occlusion, and also a greater mention of the existence of (free!) open-source products like Blender, (www.blender3d.org) which do implement even the advanced concepts discussed in the book and are quite readily available to the general public.

I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about the formatting of this bundle -- my copy has a TOC at the front with links to each book and has a separate TOC for the chapters of each book -- so it seems like everyone else's probably has this too. When you open the bundle for the first time on your Kindle, it doesn't take you to the actual beginning of the book (I've found this to be true of basically all Kindle books -- what it considers "the beginning" skips the cover, table of contents, forwards, etc.). If you use "Go to" on the menu and then choose "Cover" (again, something I do at the start of every Kindle book), you will be brought to a picture of the box set. Three page turns brings you to the Contents page, which has links to the cover pages of all 4 books, as well as the bundle cover, title page, and the bonus material at the end (including the excerpt from A Dance with Dragons). If you don't choose a link from this page and instead turn 4 or 5 more pages or so (through the title and copyright pages), you'll come to the TOC for the first book. I would think that it probably doesn't give TOC as a choice on the Go To menu because there is more than one table of contents to choose from!

In addition, as you can see on the bottom progress bar, the start of each book is marked with a dot on the bar. So you can judge your progress through a particular book by seeing how far away you are from the next dot. Also, from the cover pages in the beginning, if you hit the right arrow on the directional pad, you will be taken right to the cover page of the next book. Hitting the left arrow takes you back to the start of the previous book. This will work from any cover page. If you are in the text of the book itself, hitting the left or right arrow takes you to the start of the next or previous chapter. If you have a Kindle 2, you would push the 5-way controller left or right.

I haven't begun reading this bundle yet (though I have read all the books previously -- twice), so I can't comment on the text of the actual bundle -- though of course the books themselves are fantastic! I have browsed through it, though, so I can tell you that the maps are all there as well as picture covers for each book as well as a picture of the box set. The beginning pages of each chapter all have an illustrated border at the top, and the text itself looks great (no problems with text formatting that I can tell).

I also can't complain about the price, since I preordered this for .99, which was a great deal for all 4 books. I would agree that the price is kind of high now, but it's really pretty much the same as the 4 books separately in Kindle editions. As it says at the top of the product page, the price was set by the publisher -- not Amazon.

So, in summary, I really don't see the problems that the other reviewers are pointing out. If you are wanting all 4 books for your Kindle, either because you haven't read them before or because you want your next re-read to be in Kindle format, this is a great way to get them!

Edit 3/31/11:
Amazon has updated this book set, and there is now a link in the Go To menu for table of contents, which brings you to the page at the front with clickable links to each book. This page was already there, but now you can get to it from the Go To menu instead of having to go to Cover and page forward.

I stumbled across this page and saw a handful of 1-star reviews that left me puzzled. Then I realized that all of them were regarding the supposedly-poor quality of the Kindle version. Well, I can't tell you anything about the Kindle version. I'm one of those old-school guys, so I bought the paperback set, and it's undoubtedly worth the money. Obviously, the content is 5-star worthy (see the reviews for each individual book), so I'm going to limit my review to the box set itself. This set contains each of the first four books in the Song of Ice and Fire Series (that's A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, and A Feast for Crows), with all-new cover artwork. Out of all the versions released, this is the most visually enrapturing artwork yet. The novels are brightly colored and contain designs that are brilliant in their simplicity. The outer box contains some high-quality shots from the upcoming HBO series.

Highly recommended for:
-Someone who's never read A Song of Ice and Fire. This is the place to start, and a great value too (4 loooong books for ).
-Longtime fans whose old paperback copies are worn from reading and re-reading in anticipation of A Dance With Dragons.
-Hardcore series collectors who want to own the best versions.

I lent my older copies of this series to my ex-girlfriend, and since I never got them back, I decided that this box set was a worthy purchase. I'm so satisfied with it, I can honestly say that I don't miss the books I lost, not even one bit. I've posted some pictures of the box set so you can decide for yourself if you like its look enough to drop the money.

I received this book set the day it came out. Love this series! I would recommend looking at book #3 "A Storm of Swords" because I am having to replace mine as a result of publisher error. It is missing pages 561-592 and it has a double inclusion of pages 593-624. Make sure that your book set doesn't have the same publisher error! Otherwise, I am very happy with this purchase.

I have used Photoshop Elements since version 2 and I strongly believe it is the best photo-editing program available for under 0. It will do most of the editing tasks that the full version of Photoshop does but at a fraction of the cost. It is the software I have my "Digital Photography" and "Digital Drawing and Painting" students use for the college courses I teach.

If you are serious or semi-serious about editing your photos I highly recommend that you purchase this. In addition, an important advantage of learning (and using) Elements is that if you decide to someday move up to the full version of Photoshop all the stuff you learned translates to the more expensive program. Also, there is a TON of instructional material available online (most of it free!) and in books that will help you learn this program.

I've included a short video showing a few of the features of Elements 10 and how they compare with the same features in Photoshop CS5.

If you just want an easy program to use to edit a few photos now and then you can find cheaper software programs, and many online programs that are free. One good free online application is Sumo Paint.

My recommendations to current Photoshop Elements users:

1. Element 9 Users: The new features in Elements 10 basically deal with organizing your photos and some quick and easy templates and photo effects. For the most part, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to Elements 10 if you have Elements 9.

2. Elements 3-8 Users: I recommend upgrading to Elements 10 because there was a huge improvement between versions 8 and 9 (content aware, puppet warp, and the ability to add masks to layers).

Photoshop Elements (PSE) 10 --like its predecessor versions-- is an image editor with a spectrum of features that will rapidly surpass the skills (and time available to tinker) of most amateur digital photographers...even highly skilled ones. The overall interface will be familiar to user of PSE versions as far back as PSE 6 or 7. It incorporates most of the multiple image merge functions familiar to users since PSE 7. As with previous versions, PSE 10 offers this for a fraction of the cost of its big-brother Photoshop CS5. Most amateur photographers --and even some frugal professionals-- can perform all but the most advanced digital editing with PSE 10 (and then use the money saved for some nice new hardware!).

Note: This review assumes some familiarity with digital photography and digital image concepts, and previous exposure to earlier PSE versions.

Installation:
-No issues with installation on a machine with a fresh (less than two weeks old) install of Windows 7, a dual-core 3 GHZ processor and 4 GB of RAM.

-Unlike PSE 8, PSE 10 does not require users to decide whether to continue using an earlier version or use the new version exclusively. You have the option to use --or remove-- both version 10 and an earlier version (but you can't do so at the same time: I tried!).

-The license for this product permits installation on one primary and one "mobile" computer, with the restriction not to use on both computers at the same time.

-Total installation time (including entering the registration code and skimming the EULA) took less than 10 minutes. This was followed by PSE 10's "Organizer" peforming its own indexing of the digital images on my computer. Cataloging nearly 50,000 digital images took slightly less than an hour. If you're a Windows user and store your images in a non-default "My Pictures" location under your user name: you'll have to tell PSE where to browse for this indexing.

Function and features:
-The interface, function and features of PSE 10 will be familiar to users of recent PSE versions. The .psd files are still manipulated using layers and selection tools. The complete range of image effects ("filters"), image enhancement and editing tools are essentially unchanged since version 6. Still present are options to open, edit and save in wide range of file formats.

-PSE 10 recognized the scanner on my system, and immediately allowed imports of scanned images using both the scanner's proprietary interface (Epson software) and the generic WIA Windows Image Acquisition, the successor to TWAIN) options.

-Output to the printers on my system was trouble-free. Accepting the default printing options yielded fine results, but advanced options for those who like to tweak are readily available. PSE 10 successfully offered options to print to the two physical (laserjet, inkjet) and two virtual (Acrobat and Microsoft Document Writer) printers attached to my desktop.

Issues:
-PSE 10 and Adobe continue to assume plenty about user connectivity. All of the help files for PSE 10 are online. Select "Help" in the menu bar (or press the "F1" key), and you are not taken to local help files...you are taken to adobe.com. This is fine if you are connected to the Internet, but less fine if you are not (and some people are NOT connected at all times). You can optionally download a 27 MB .pdf user guide. This is an option you'll want to exercise if you anticipate needing help while not online or if you have bandwidth constraints where you work.

-Adobe also continues to also push its online services hard. At install, and *every* time you launch PSE 10, you will be invited to enter your "Adobe Online ID". If you register (and you'll probably want to just for update notifications), you'll get some free services (2 GB of storage and some sharing functions). This seems to be aimed at two things:
(1) tracking use habits of users (my opinion only; but read the EULA carefully!)
(2) enticing you into the .99 per year "PSE 10 Plus" services (20 GB of online storage and some sharing and effects services). While I suppose the integration with PSE is nice, you can register your own domain --with unlimited storage-- from hundreds of providers for much less than this. Resist!

As long as you download the .pdf file so you have access to help files when offline, and remain aware of what *any* software company may be doing when they solicit you to use the online extensions of their products: these are not serious shortcomings. But my suspicions about how Adobe might track user behavior and over-reliance on online help files are what move this from a 5-star to a 4-star review.

The first few hours are a nightmare. There are so many levels of tools and effects it gets very confusing and frustrating. The last time I used a program this complex it came with a 600 page manual. I found the information in the help menu helpful but limited. Save yourself some brain cells, buy one of the how to manuals. I am finding the "Missing Manual" book very informative. Photoshop Elements 10: The Missing Manual Also find a print out of the key board short cuts. Once you understand the basics it starts to get easier.

Saving your work is confusing at first with all the options available to you. Let PS save the way it wants to, and never move a file from where PS thinks it is. The next time you try to open PS it will go fruit loops and spend the next five hours looking for it.

After a few days things start to make sense, and you start to figure out how things work. I am using PS on Windows 7, and a Mac also. Works just as well on both OS.

Once things start to congeal it is a very excellent program that will allow you to make beautiful pictures with which you can bore your friends!

Pros:
- Price
- Looks decent
- Works well in the right situations
- Comes with monitor mounting plate

Cons:
- Description doesn't list minimum desk thickness. Mine is 1", which isn't too thin, but I still had to use a spacer. This clamp stops just shy of clamping down on a 1" surface.
- If the base is offset, with the monitor hanging off the left or the right, the monitor will not be level. There is no adjustment to fix this. I put a washer under one half of the base, which causes the main support post to lean slightly to the left, but the monitor is now level
- Cheap plastic molded screws connect the monitor to the stand. I swapped them out for two other bolts and washers and a dab of LocTite
- Difficult to tighten enough to prevent movement

Reasons To Buy:
- You don't mind fiddling a bit to save some money
- Your desk is over 1" thick
- The main support post will be centered behind the monitor.

One of the threads for the tightening knobs was slanted. Not sure if this was the caused, but the stand would not hold my 22" ViewSonic monitor upright in portrait mode. Also, buyers should clearly understand that you cannot swivel the monitor with this mount - in order to switch between portrait and landscape mode, you must remove the bracket mounting plate from the back of the monitor and reinstall it in the other mode; otherwise the hooks that attach the monitor to the bracket wouldn't work (they slide into the bracket vertically.

This item does its job when it comes to extension and horizontal rotation, but on the vertical swivel, it fails miserably. The construction is sturdy, but the connector to the monitor relies on two plastic fused to metal screw to control the torque. Which means, when the screw goes bye bye, your monitor no longer stays up instead it faces down. Not recommended!!

Standard SD and SDHC cards look identical in size and shape, only SDHC-compatible products will be able to accept the new SDHC cards. SanDisk differentiates its new cards with the new SDHC logo on the card and retail package.

Now my web research finds that at the time of its release Wes Brewer, vice president of consumer product marketing at SanDisk, said, "In order to provide the easiest and most compatible solution for 4GB and larger capacity SDHC cards in the market, SanDisk chose to bundle its new MicroMate USB 2.0 SD/SDHC compatible card reader, which normally retails for .99, with this new card."

Note this deal does not include a reader.

In my case the device I bought it for can read it. Without the dedicated reader my year old HP computer cannot .

This is a must for loading music to listen to on my Palm TX. But BEWARE of eek Technoligies and buying at this price. They wanted .20 for shipping a 2 oz memory card? Buy from someone else even if it is a few dollars more and pay reasonable shipping rates. Don't be fooled by their cheap price they make it up 2x in shippoing charges. When I saw it I cancelled my order..

It's nice to have 4GB in your camera and be able to take pictures at max resolution and not have to worry about running out of space. I've been using SanDisk cards for 6 years now and never had a single problem. Be warned however, if you have a somewhat older digital camera, it may not recognize a card of this size and the card will be useless. I don't know why they don't mention this in the product spec, hence the 4 stars. Check your camera's user manual for max memory capabilities, if any.

I've been using one of the laptops that Google originally distributed in order to test Chrome OS. As the idea behind Chromebooks is new to some, I thought I'd focus on the operating system, though I've covered the hardware to a point.
I'll try to make this in-depth without it being too technical.

If you're looking for a quick idea of whether or not this is for you, jump to the bottom and read the summary.

The Concept

The premise on which Chrome OS is based is that almost everything you do when you use your computer happens in your browser, so Google have built a system that makes that experience as fast, as simple and as secure as they can. That simplicity also leads to an 8-hour battery life, which very few laptops can offer.
This simpler approach means that you don't have to deal with software updates(with one exception, see below) or worry about anti-virus software.
This also means all of your files and media is stored on other computers, on the internet. Some people aren't ready for that and if you're not, Chromebooks aren't for you.

Applications and Limitations

As you might imagine, just the web means no Windows, Mac or other typical software applications. Because of this, there's no CD or DVD drive in a Chromebook.
Though `just the web' may sound extremely-limiting, you can do a lot in your browser; multimedia editing(including video), as well as voice and video chat is all entirely possible on a Chromebook, as is the creation and editing of documents, spreadsheets and presentations. This software is available all over the web and there's a selection of useful tools to be found in the Chrome Web Store, with free and paid solutions.
That said, you can just type in a web address or search as you would normally to find a helpful website. As an example, Google, Zoho and Microsoft all offer web-based office suites, some of those are free and some paid.

Setup

Setting up a Chromebook is as simple as turning it on, putting in your Wi-Fi connection details and logging in.
If there's a new version of the operating system(as there was when I set my machine up) it will download that before you can continue. This may seem odd, as the idea is to make updates invisible to you, but Chromebooks check for updates the first time they're run in case something in that update changes something key, like the introduction process for new users.
Once the laptop has checked for updates, it reboots and you login. You're then shown how to do various things with the click-able touchpad, such as scrolling and right-clicking.

Speed

After the first time it's turned on Chromebooks are designed to be very fast. In my experience, that means booting up in around 9 seconds from off, whether that means the power button being pressed or the lid being lifted. If you close the lid for a while but leave the machine on, it should resume instantly.

Security

Whilst not being able to install traditional software can seem restrictive, it also has a huge benefit: no more anti-virus software.
Viruses are so common on Windows(and lately the Mac operating system, OS X) because the more software that's installed, the more potential vulnerabilities there are to exploit.

Because the Chromebook knows what software should be installed, it can keep a copy in an encrypted area of the hard drive. Each time you turn the machine on, it checks to see if anything unathorised has changed in the software. If it has, that encrypted copy overwrites everything and any updates will be installed when you connect to the internet.
No system is 100% secure, but this method(called verified boot) makes it much harder to compromise your machine.

Privacy and Google

Some users don't like the idea of being dependent on any large company for their computing needs. So, does a Chromebook make you reliant upon Google?
In short, no. Whilst Google does encourage you to log in to a Chromebook with your Google account, you can log in under Guest mode. Whilst using Guest mode, nothing you do is saved on the machine, you don't need to log in to a Google service and you're free to use any web-based service you choose. Google is currently working on other login methods.
However, should you choose to login using your Google account(as I do and most users ultimately will) your settings and bookmarks can be saved and synched across any other device running Chrome(which now includes Android phones running Ice Cream Sandwich - version 4.0 of Android - and above), just as they are in for the Chrome browser.

Files and Devices

A key thing when using a system like this is being able to use files people email you and external hardware, just like you would on a Windows PC or a Mac.

I had an older Chromebook and the new Samsung 550 is much much better. It is fast, simple and surprisingly powerful. As long as you're comfortable with the Google Apps products (great word processor and spreadsheet, adequate presentation editor and capable of reading all Microsoft Office attachments) this is a perfect laptop for casual use. The concept of everything in the cloud works great, and makes it easy to upload, view and share pictures from your camera, do your email and social networking, and do your day-to-day document editing all from one place, then pick it up and continue on a different computer if needed. Google video chat or hangouts are better than Skype, and accommodates video conferencing with multiple parties, so ideal for families. This will save me a ton of time acting as tech support for my parents and sister, because there is so little to know to get this laptop working.

I find it interesting to read reviews about how you can get a more powerful Windows laptop for the same price. To those reviewers: you're missing the point. This laptop has none of the crud that is windows (with its slow boot, patches, updates and virus checkers) and simply works. Of course, if you are into gaming, or want to do video editing you need something bigger - but that is not the target audience for the Chromebook. For casual use (and that encompasses the majority of what most people do on a laptop) the Chromebook is perfect.

I've been using a Samsung Series 5 Chromebook and truly love it. I think many of the people that have made complaints about the Chromebook have the wrong expectations of how to use it and what they're for. Yes, there were certainly some issues with the first Series 5, like speed, but as the OS improved (and they release new updates to the OS very, very frequently), performance definitely improved.

Have I fully moved away from my regular laptop/PC?...no, but I'd definitely say that it is extremely rare that I use it now. And for the record, I have a Sony Vaio that's never given me any problems and has been a great device with a very large screen. However, there are some things that I was looking to get away from as it relates to your traditional laptop, both Windows and Mac.

Firstly, I loved the idea of having a laptop that was instantly on. In general, I always found it frustrating to wait for my Windows PC to boot up. I could often make a cup of coffee by the time Windows was fully on and ready to function.

Secondly, is the removal of the need to have to install software. When you buy a traditional laptop (Windows or Mac), you always have to add the extra costs of MS Office, anti-virus protection, etc...which in the end will run you a couple of hundred dollars more than the price of the laptop. With Chrome, you have the full access to Google Docs (and its office counterparts) and if you also have a hotmail/msn/windows live account, you automatically have access to Microsoft's OfficeLive & Skydrive, which gives you web versions of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word that quite frankly are pretty darn close to the desktop Office version, especially if you're a general user. The great thing about a web based system is that whether you're using Google Docs or OfficeLive, you're using the power behind their servers to power your document...so it's fast.

Thirdly, I love the fact that the OS is constantly updated and that it's quite simple to do so. You just turn the laptop on, it gives you a simple notification that there's an update available. All of the updates (even the latest major one done in May) was extremely quick.

Fourth, from a security perspective, because of the fact that everything is coming from the Google servers and the sandboxing capability of Chrome, I feel very safe with the device.

Fifth, battery life is way better than a standard laptop.

Quite frankly, I often reach for my Chromebook even before my tablet on many items because it's instantly on and just works. A long while back, I moved all of the contents of my traditional laptop to a cloud-based storage and at this point, when the inevitable day comes that my laptop goes (they only last max of 3.5 to 5 years max), I can't see why I would buy another PC.

If most of what you do is browser based search/surfing and your media (music, photos, etc.) are in the cloud...you have to ask yourself...do you really need to purchase another laptop and all that comes with it? I think the fundamental question is "what do you really use your computer for?"...if the answer is as I described then your expectations are right and a Chromebook is for you. I think the new enhancements of the 550 make it a much more compelling purchase for those who were holding out.

This bag is great. It has tons of space, lots of pockets to organize things, and is a beautiful color (although it does get dirty easily). I bought this for my 15.4" Toshiba laptop, and let's just say, its a tight fit. I basically have to shove the computer in there. The description says it fits up to 15.4" laptops but just know, its really meant for a smaller size laptop, as mine just barely fits.

This bag is roomy thats a plus.It fits most anything I need. The problem is the strap is too long (maybe bc im short) and the top flap comes open often. I would preffer a bag I can grab and go and I have trouble with the long strap and opening top flap when i grab out of my car from drivers seat.

Physically, this Transcend 16 GB JetFlash 500 Retractable USB 2.0 Flash Drive looks almost identical to the SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16GB drive. The retractable USB plug on the Transcend drive also works EXACTLY the same way as the Sandisk (I'm surprised that somebody hasn't got sued yet). But that's where the similarity ends, because the Transcend JetFlash is a whole lot faster!

A bit of background information: I own both the Sandisk Cruzer Micro 4GB and 16GB versions. What I noticed is that the 16GB version is much slower than the 4GB version, especially when witting data. I even contacted Sandisk customer support, trying to find out what is the speed of Cruzer Micro. The response I got was quite useless:
"There is no guaranteed speed for SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drives, as the speed for these flash drives have not been tested. If you need a flash drive with fast data transfer speed, we recommend SanDisk Extreme Cruzer Contour for this."

Prior to ordering this JetFlash drive, I visited the Transcend USA web site to search for information. Surprise, surprise! The data transfer speed of JetFlash 500 (under the 'V' series) is actually specified as:
"Read 15 MByte/s, Write 7 MByte/s (16GB)"

Once I received this Transcend JetFlash drive, I put it through several benchmark programs, to compare against the Sandisk Cruzer Micro:

- For typical photo files, write speed of the Transcend varies from 6.8MB/s (for 1MB file) to 11.3MB/s (for 5MB file). In contrast, the Sandisk only ranges from 2.0MB/s to 3.5MB/s. That means the Transcend is about 3x faster than the Sandisk! (See my Customer Images for details)

- For very large video files, the Transcend writes at about 7.8MB/s, while the Sandisk only reaches 5.1MB/s. The difference in smaller but still significant.

In terms of storage space: The Transcend drive reports 15.1GB of total capacity, while the Sandisk drive reports 14.9GB. Note that it is normal for a '16GB' flash drive to show only 14.9GB of storage, because 14.9GB for computer people (where 1GB = 2 to the power 30) actually translates to about 16,000,000,000 bytes. So that can be called '16GB' according to marketing people (where 1GB = one billion bytes).

In summary, the Transcend JetFalsh 16GB drive looks and works just like the Sandisk Cruzer Micro, but its write speed is +50% to +200% faster than the latter. As of this writing, both drives are available at similar prices, so this makes the Transcend a much better value.

[Update on Nov 3, 2010]:
- The price of this Transcend USB drive dropped further during the past two months. So now it is an even better value.

- Several reviewers have reported bad experiences using this USB drive on the Xbox 360. Right now your only safe bet is to get the Xbox 360 - 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive by SanDisk, which costs twice as much.

- If you don't intend to use the software supplied by Transcend, simply rename the file "Autorun.inf" (located at the root directory of this drive) to something else, such as "Autorun._inf". Then you can use it as a simple USB storage device.

[Update on April 7, 2012]:
I have my Transcend USB drive connected to my desktop PC as secondary storage most of the time, only occassionally remove it to transfer files. So far it worked perfectly fine for 1.5 years. It should be noted that I have used at least half a dozen USB drives and at least 20 flash memory cards in the past decade, and none of them ever failed on me. So it could be that I am just more careful with semiconductor devices (I always discharge myself of any possible electrostatic charge before handling memory cards, for example)

I've had several Transcend flash drives and find them to be quite good and fast. This flash has lots of room for storage and a free software download that gives you all sorts of extras, including a place to save passwords, a browser and a whole lot more --- plus easy syncing of data.

Not much you can say about storage other than it's fast and dependable with free software to help make your life and work easier. It's a nice looking little unit and I really like the way you simply slide the connection out.

UPDATE: I accidentally left my Transcend in my jeans and washed them. I'm pleased to report that the Transcend manned up and worked as well as before it took a bath. While I don't recommend this sort of treatment, it's good to know this little guy can take a bit of rough treatment.

Highly recommended.

I purchased this as a Gold Box deal, so I won't include price as a factor in my review- in all fairness to later reviews. I purchased this for the sole purpose of transporting music and picture files.

I received this yesterday and plugged it into a USB 1.1 port on my case- Not a 2.0! I installed the Transcend Jetflash elite software. I haven't utilized anything in the software, but it includes features for:

1. Outlook Expres and Windows email
2. easy access to your favorites in Intenet Explorer and Firefox browsers
3. secret-zip setup- password feature
4. Data backup and Data sync
5. PC Lock
6. My Jetflash- shows what's on the drive

After installing their software, there was still 15.1 GB available, which I believe is what's the norm for a 16GB drive.

Performance is usually the most critical issue (besides price) with all drives. Needless to say, that is not a big issue with me, since I have it plugged into a 1.1 port! lol. But I did decide to do a couple of performance checks for the tech geeks! (Yes I fall into that category, too!) These specs are read from an external Maxtor One Touch 1TB hard drive and written to the Transcend 16GB jump drive- into a 1.1 port and out a 1.1 port! Sorry, I didn't feel like pulling the full tower case out to reach the 2.0 ports!

A 77.2 mb music folder took 13 seconds (nearly 6mb/sec and a 337 mb music folder took 52 seconds (6.5mb/sec). I imagine it would perform quite better using 2.0 ports.

The only con I can think of would be the somewhat cheap construction (plastic) of this drive. It rattles slightly when you shake it, so rough users might have issues with this. Hopefully, some of this may help you with your decision!

My friends and I get into some pretty heated chess games, with weighted pieces -- and there's little more satisfying (at the chessboard, at least) than smashing your clock button with one of your opponent's major pieces. We do this quite a bit. Sad, isn't it?

Nevertheless, the clock's a trooper; and is probably the most solidly-built chess clock I've ever seen. Operationally, it has several options that are simple to navigate and set, rubber stoppers on the bottom that keep it from sliding on the table, and even small disco lights on the toggle button to indicate whose turn it is.

Delivery was quick and painless, even to an overseas address.

If I had to dig for a complaint, though, it would be in the settings. Holding the clock's LCD face up to the light at an angle shows that there is an LCD element that reads "Fischer" -- though the clock itself has no Fischer (adding time after a move) option.

Lastly (and this is minor), the clock uses a "C" battery vice the usual "AA."

I went looking for a lowest price chess clock I could find, having the opinion that most chess clocks were way overpriced. I decided on this one over mechanical clocks to avoid the annoying tick tock those models can make, especially the cheaper ones. At first I was dismayed by the battery it uses, a more expensive C battery instead of the more common AA/AAA batteries, but as soon as I started using it I loved this clock. Its sturdy, with a wide base so slapping the buttons won't knock it over. Programming the clock is not intuitive, it took me some tinkering before I figured out how to adjust times and get the fisher clock setting. There are also instructions for those who can't figure it out. A green light indicates whose turn it is, a red light indicates who ran out of time. There is also a buzzer, you can toggle these on or off, or choose both.

The quality of construction is the second, as they have endured two years of high school and middle school competitions. And finally, the ease of use combined with the functionality make this timer a winner.

Edit: May 18, 2011 - All of the timers we purchased for the chess club are still working great. Not one failure in over 4 years of use now.

Yeah, I started playing this game, then, I got hooked to it. Even if it is about 8 years old, still good. I have the Super Mario Land game too. 12 levels for original, for Warioland, about 39 levels. Plus, you can collect treasure to raise your money. At the end, you can change your money into a castle, or better. But I don't want to tell you if you collect 99999 coins. There are more bad guys and you can be a dragon, jet, bull, original, or baby wario. Hey!!! What is Mario doing here? What is he going to do at the ending? Play this game is so fun, try it!!!

I'm not sure how old this game is, but I know I've had it for quite awhile. For those fans of the franchise that have never played the original, I think you should be warned that this plays much like Mario than later Wario games. While this isn't a bad thing (Hardly!), it may disappoint some. You can see the beginings of the style and gameplay of Wario though, including moves and overall look of the game. A good pick if your a fan of Wario, Mario, or (just as likely) both!

This game is simply a great game! It is very long too, I think there is something like 40 levels (although some of them are literally only 2-4 screens long, but really, theres only a couple of those).
First of all, there are many many things to discover; like for instance, if you have the hat that has the spikes on top and you jump and hit your head on the "ceiling" and press up on the + pad, youl'l hang there by you head!
There are also creative enimies, like there is one that is a dog that throws knives at you, and when the knife hits a wall, it will stick in it!
Anyway, this is just a really great game that will entertain you for probably weeks. So all in all, I really recomend this game.

The speed of this card may be overkill for standard shooting/filming. However, I use Magic Lantern on my 60D, which is a firmware modification that runs off of the SD card. I noticed that my Transcend 32 GB Class 10 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS32GSDHC10E had a hard time keeping up with some of the functions of the additional software. I decided to give the faster card a try, and the functions (such as magic zoom and focus peaking) work much better now.

Of course, pulling pictures and video off the card is also quicker than with the Transcend. Although both cards are "Class 10," the SanDisk is 50% faster than the Transcend.

Without going in to what a GoPro can do and why I matched it with this card I will simply say that it handles approx. 5 hours of video time in various settings and easily handles the rapid burst photo setting of 10 photos/sec...fast!

After a bit of research I purchased this card when I bought my Canon EOS 60D. I shoot RAW + JPG and have no trouble shooting at full speed with this SD card. Full HD video isn't a problem either.

I've put the card in both my desktop and laptop computers and haven't had any problem reading the images off them.

If you've spent a bunch of money on a DSLR why go cheap when it comes to the storage? A slow card can reduce the performance of the camera if you're shooting rapid fire. After looking at many reviews here and at photography websites I decided on this card and I haven't been disappointed.

So far this unit works just fine, we've got two of them. But we bought it because it doesn't make a horrible noise! For two reasons, 1) you're in bed at 2AM and the damn battery backup is beeping like a garbage truck backing up, and you have to get out of bed and turn the stupid thing off, and 2) the beeping scares the hell out of some dogs, like my dogs. I want to preserve my equipment, not hear an irritating loud beeping noise. These work great.

Criterion now has released 3 editions of this French classic: 2004 DVD edition (blue cover with photos) that has been put out of print, 2011 DVD edition (bright cover with vintage drawing) that has identical content save for a revised supplement, and a corresponding 2011 Blu-ray edition that is a high-def version of the 2011 DVD.

The 2011 Blu-ray and DVD appear to have used the same source that yielded the 2004 DVD. As those who have seen the 2004 DVD know, the original source is not in the best of shape, even though it is the best material Criterion was able to get. Google "nytimes hunting rules of the game" to see the report on Criterion's effort in tracking down the best material of the film. So does this Blu-ray look as good as the "Casablanca" blu-ray, the "Gone of the Wind" blu-ray, the "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" blu-ray? No, it doesn't. But as usual, Criterion maintains the integrity of the picture by retaining a lot of film grains on the transfer. Other studios may use digital noise reduction (DNR) to remove those film grains to not annoy modern viewers. But Criterion consistently retains film grains on its Blu-rays, thereby retaining a lot of picture details which may have been lost otherwise had DNR been used. Those who have seen a classic film in theaters would know that film grains are inherent to the pictures from those periods. These Criterion Blu-rays therefore give you as close to a theatrical experience as you can get. This Blu-ray also offers 2-3 times higher horizontal and vertical resolutions, 6 times higher video bit rate, and 6 times higher audio bit rate compared to its DVD counterpart, although these advantages benefit more to those with large screen HDTVs and good audio systems.

So what about the revised supplement on the 2011 editions? On the 2004 edition, the filmmakers' tributes to the film is on the disc. But on the 2011 editions, they are put on the booklet.

My review of the 2004 DVD is below.

** ORIGINAL REVIEW OF CRITERION 2004 DVD EDITION, JAN-24-2004 **

On the surface, THE RULES OF THE GAME is a frivolous satire of the French ruling class during the interwar years. But beneath it, this 1939 film is a rather sweeping appraisal on human nature and how the rigidity of our society continues to undermine our humanity. With a microcosmic cast of characters that comprises of masters and servants, the film weaves an intricate plot about their love, jealousies, deceit, infidelities, hypocrisies, misunderstandings, and, at times, reconciliations, and realignments of friends and foes. Through their travails, the film depicts a symbolic breakdown, and ultimately restoration, of the prevailing social order, resulting in the film being both a comedy and a tragedy. Director Jean Renoir also acts in the film, playing the pivotal role of an outsider (obviously a stand-in for the audience). His character's futile attempts to break into the "circle" and to bring about the well-beings of his friends suggest that it is often difficult to survive under the social order, let alone change it.

The Criterion DVD is an all-region two-disc set with a newly restored video transfer and plenty of rewarding extra material. This eagerly-awaited disc was originally to be released last Fall, when Criterion had already finished a video transfer that would have looked better than any existing copy of the film. But at the last minute, Criterion received word that an earlier-generation fine-grain master of the film had been located in France, and that additional improvement, though not dramatic, could be made to the picture quality. Being the perfectionist that it often is, Criterion decided to redo the video transfer based on the fine-grain master, thus delaying the DVD's release by several months. According to the New York Times article "Hunting 'The Rules of the Game'" on Jan-18-04, the redone transfer justified the additional time and cost by yielding more details in dark areas and richer shades of grey on the picture, resulting in a less harsh look and perhaps subliminally making the characters in the film seem more sympathetic.

The DVD's video quality is indeed the best I've ever seen. Its sharpness and clarity of details are a revelation to those who have seen, for instance, Criterion's laserdisc version years ago. A digital cleanup process has been used to eliminate much (but not all) of the dirt and blemishes. The original French audio track has also been improved, and it now sounds cleaner, with almost no hiss and pops, and more detailed. In a film that relies on its numerous visual and audio details to be effective, the technical improvements made for this DVD are absolutely worthwhile and welcomed.

Jean Renoir's THE RULES OF THE GAME takes place on the eve of World War II at an aristocratic house party in an opulent chateau just outside of Paris where the overlapping `affaires d'amour' of all social classes are observed with a keen and compassionate eye. Renoir looks to the eighteenth-century world of Commedia dell'Arte and Mozartian opera, and seamlessly integrates farce with tragedy, using a classical form to offer his audience a profound and multifaceted parable on the disturbing realities that underlie the veneer of contemporary French society.

It is the middle-class aviator, André Jurieu (Roland Toutain), who embodies the film's central conflict between the private passions and a sense of obligation to a larger social body. Right at the outset of the film, he violates the unwritten "rules" of social propriety by declaring to a radio reporter his disappointment that the woman he had been courting, Christine de la Chesnaye (Nora Grégor), is not present at his reception after completing a record-breaking flight across the Atlantic. His skill with the advanced technology of aircraft is not matched by an ability to deal with people, particularly in matters of love. Indeed, André's careless and unmediated show of desire for a highborn lady not only transgresses the received law of proper social conduct but of traditional class distinctions as well.

Other characters also entertain desires that come into conflict with the social order. The Marquis, Robert de la Chesnaye (Marcel Dalio), is having a fling with Geneviève de Marrast (Mila Parély) behind Christine's back, and Geneviève is sincerely attached to him and wants for them to go away together yet he maintains the proper outward appearance, and out of politeness and consideration for his wife's feelings, keeps up the charade that their affair is a secret in spite of the fact that "everybody knows." Christine observes her husband's liaison with strange amusement, commenting that they look "very interesting" together - for her adultery is a form of entertaining spectacle. But even Robert loses his cool at one point when he discovers Christine and André together in the gunroom and punches the aviator in the face.

Strangely enough, it is only the classless Pandarus-figure, Octave, who can get through to the serenely unattainable Christine because he seems to have no particular desires of his own; he only concerns himself with regulating the desires of others. Octave confesses that, like Marcello Mastrioanni in Fellini's LA DOLCE VITA, he is "a failure" who merely pleases his friends so that he may live off their wealth like "a parasite." Apparently, Christine loves him for his understanding that everything in life, every social relationship, is really a lie of some sort, and that all desire and romantic fantasy is, at bottom, a blind form of narcissistic self-deception. It seems that the two of them have come to understand the law that underpins desire - "La Règle de Jeu" - all too well.

As Pauline Kael has pointed out, Renoir may have conceived Robert de la Chesnaye as a composite of two different characters in GRAND ILLUSION: Marcel Dalio's rich young mercantile Jew, Rosenthal, and the generous, self-sacrificing French nobleman, De Boeldieu, played by Pierre Fresnay. Here, the director appears to equate the waning aristocracy of Old World Europe with the imminent fate of the European Jewish community in the wake of rising nationalism, militarism, and xenophobia. When a chef makes an anti-Semitic slight against the Robert, revealing the bigotry of the French working classes, it evokes the controversy surrounding the Dreyfus Affair. By the same token, the General's final comment that Robert is one of a "dying breed" not only heralds the decay of aristocratic privilege but, from the vantage point of hindsight, also seems a chilling spectre of Nazi racialist ideology and the Final Solution.

Christine's Austrian origin alludes to the looming war with Germany and seems a prediction of France's collaboration under the Vichy régime. Likewise, the reference to Schumacher's home of Alsace-Lorraine, the highly contested land ceded to the Germans at the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 and then returned to France with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, highlights an old geopolitical conflict between the two countries. The indiscriminate destruction of life in the rabbit and pheasant hunt sequence forecasts the waste and destruction of the war to come.

Renoir's approach to mise-en-scène is especially groundbreaking. He employs seamless cutting as well as long continuous takes and tracking shots which follow the characters as they move from one space to the next in a manner that anticipates the graceful circling, panning, sensuously kinetic camera of Welles, Ophüls, Godard, Resnais, Bertolucci and others. No history of cinema would be complete without "The Rules of the Game" (1939). Director Jean Renoir's brilliant, perceptive study of a dying French aristocracy remains among the finest examples of visual poetry captured on film - as evidenced in the savage "rabbit hunt" and the haunting final shot. Along with "Grand Illusion" (1937), "The Rules of the Game" represents the high-water mark of Renoir's career. It's as close to perfection as a film can get.

I recently did my own a router head-to-head comparison, acquiring a number of different routers and trying them out: some cheap netgears, Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Router (R10000G) (skip it), Cisco-Linksys E4200 Dual-Band Wireless-N Router, ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router (my favorite so far).

I'm also an I/T professional, so I had a lot of fun puting this thing through its paces.

Range:
Range is the most important part of a router to me, especially because signal strength is the biggest factor in speed. Even though the maximum speed advertised for a Wireless-N device is far higher, you can be sitting next to an B-wireless router and beat the pants off of an N-wireless device 100 feet away.
Linksys routers seem to abhor the idea of external antennae, which I always feel hurts them. Compared to the Asus RT-N66U, this system tended to be underpowered. My office registered the Asus at -45dBm, while this was at -55dBm. That might not sound like much, but remember that decibels are a logaritmic scale, meaning that the Cisco signal is about 1/10 the strength of the Asus.

Speed:
The 750Mb/s is a bit of bad marketing that eveyone participates in. The highest consumer bandwidth options I've seen is 50Mb/s (up & down) from FIOS, which just about any modern router can handle, so if you expect to get better performance from Netflix or Skype, this router problable won't help.
Furthermore, the 750 is 450 on the 5Ghz N channel, and 300 on the 2.4 Ghz N channel, but you can only do one at a time, so the best you'll actually see is 450 (which is darned good). 5GHz N can be faster, but is very susceptible to distance, so from my experience, you pretty much have to be in the same room to get those speeds. That said, if you have your TV come into a slingbox Sling Media Slingbox PRO-HD SB300-100, and then sit in that room with your iPad, you will be able to stream that video with great reception. But of course, one has to wonder why you don't just turn on your TV. When in other rooms, you'll get up to 300Mb/s over 2.4N, or 54Mb/s over 2.4G. Still good enough for streaming, but it takes the shine off of this device versus other less costly ones. This, however, is a general industry issue, and not specifically related to this Linksys. This specific model did indeed demonstrate the ability to connect to it at the advertised speeds... when my laptop was a foot away.

Features:
App - If all you have is an IPad or Android tablet, but no laptop, then having an app that allows you to configure the router is useful. Personally, I have no issues going in through Safari and using the web interface, but if you're not a geek, you might.
Disk - the great thing about the Linksys E series is the ability to easily mount an external hard drive. This is a great feature, and allows you to save hundreds versus a cloud storage system like Dropbox or iCloud (the interface isn't as nice, nor does it have disaster recovery).

Room for improvement:
The ASUS has a few features that I really like but are lacking on the Linksys
No repeater mode - The Asus will allow you to set it up as a repeater for a wireless system. Linksys insists you buy a different device
No DoS protection - I discovered that I am the frequent victim of Denial of Service attacks, though I have no idea why. I suspect everyone is. Amped Wireless and Asus both have configs that let you fight DoS attacks, Linksys does not.
No VPN - The ASUS is also my OpenVPN server, which allows me to be out of the house and securely get access to things on my home network without having to set up a bunch of port forwarding, which is a security risk. Both iPhone/iPad and Android phones & tablets offer native OpenVPN clients.

On my e4200, I had frequent issues with the 5Ghz radio to the point where I had to turn it off. I don't know if that's any better.

All in all, it's a decent router, but nothing special. I'd likely either get a cheaper router like Netgear WNR2000 N300 Wireless Router, or spring for the Asus. I have my cable modem coming into the Asus, use... Read more

Just installed this new router yesterday and could not be happier. We live in a relatively large home with multiple wireless and wired electronics and was having difficulty with having all electronics running at the same time and signal not getting to all areas of the home, even though previous router was also N band. Now signal is much stronger and can have multiple wireless computers and a Roku going on at the same time with no delay. Set up was very easy, it recognizes and I can label the different electronic equipment and very simple set up for guest account. Highly recommended.

To set the stage for my review, all of my wireless access points are 802.11n (I've been upgrading over the years) with some being dual-band, and my wireless router for the past two or so years has been a Qwest Actiontec Q1000. The Actiontec broadcasts all 802.11 protocols like this Linksys, but the two differences are that it works over a single 2.4GHz band and does not allow a USB device to be attached and accessed over the network. I wanted to see if the second band at 5GHz would increase my throughput. I use wireless for both internet access (on a ~25 Mbps network speed) and streaming HD video to my PS3 (which is wired to an 802.11n access point).

Overall, I think that this is a good router with good performance. I can't compare this against any of the other routers available today, but the following might help you make your decision.

SETUP
Initial, basic setup was incredibly easy. Just follow the instructions in the box (load the included CD, plug in the router, run the software) and things should work smoothly. Advanced setup (such as not broadcasting your network SSID, running two different networks from the two bands, running 802.11n only) was a bit more time consuming for me because there were no included instructions on how to do it. There is a good manual available in PDF form on the manufacturer's website (it just took me a while to find it) that includes recommendations on improving performance and talks about how to set things up. I wish that they would have at least included the link to it in the box (maybe they did, but I didn't see it). As an aside, the browser-based setup on the Actiontec is a lot more graphically refined and a bit easier to use, IMO, than the browser-based setup on the Linksys.

SPEED
With my Actiontec, I was achieving wireless speeds around 70 Mbps. After hooking up the Linksys and going through the setup, my speeds were also around 70 Mbps. So, whatever is limiting my Actiontec is also limiting the Linksys. I had hoped that the newer design, better antennas, or dual-band would have boosted it. However, it is no worse and is still plenty fast for my needs. The online manual recommends splitting the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into two networks for increased performance, which I did. I still have yet to see if that provides me with overall better performance (as I'm surfing the web on my laptop over 2.4GHz while streaming video to my PS3 over 5GHz).

NETWORK DRIVE
I connected a USB drive to the Linksys and am able to access it from my PC and from my Mac. This is my first network drive, so it took me a while to figure out how to map it to both - but once I did, it worked smoothly. Unlike another reviewer, I could see the entire contents of the drive from both computers. I had messed around with the router settings for sharing the drive before I figured out how to map it, so that might have done something, but I'm pretty sure that I ended up with the original settings when it was all done. I do wish that my PS3 could see the drive, but if I understand correctly, I would need to step up to the EA4500 for the DNLA support.

MAC TIME CAPSULE
I tried running the network drive as a Time Capsule drive with my MacBook that is running Lion. Unfortunately, I received an error like many Lion owners that the drive doesn't support a newly imposed protocol. Perhaps a firmware update will allow it to work with Lion, but for now, it won't. Older Mac OS's might work with it, though. Linksys doesn't advertise that it will work with Lion Time Capsule, so I'm not upset - I had just hoped that it would.

APP ENABLED
I might be missing something, but I think that this just refers to the app available for Android and iOS devices to control the router. I downloaded it to my iPad and checked it out. It works just fine with this model and allows you to change some settings.

Pros:
- Dual-band that can be set up as two separate wireless networks (one on the 2.4GHz band and one on the 5GHz band)
- Four gigabit ports for wired connections
- Sleek hardware design with all antennas being internal (the Actiontec antennas are externally attached)

On my wish list:
- Updated firmware to make it compatible with Mac OS X Lion in regards to using an attached USB drive as a Time Capsule drive
- Inclusion of the user manual on the CD, or inclusion of a link in the box as to where it is located on their website
- Mounting holes, or an included base stand, to mount it vertically to free up some desk space
- A more refined browser-based setup

Less cluttered interface and fairly faster than 2011, September 13, 2011

Norton woke-up in 2009/10 making the interface user-friendly and its signature updates running in the background making the software less resource-hogging. It's continuing the same trend this year (NIS2012) with a little less cluttered interface - meaning most features automated for the novice user, but you have to dig in deep to make advanced changes. It works well with Windows7 as well as Win XP if you care (I don't have Vista - so cannot comment about that).

1. Installation: As in the recent versions of NIS, installation was a snap. It took under 2 minutes, but needed a restart. If you have existing license for NIS, download the update from support -> check for new version menu item from within NIS. You can update the license number from the disk later when your license is about to expire. In previous version(s), NIS overwrote existing license period if you upgraded from disk. I havent checked it on this version (I still have about 90 days left, too risky!!).

2. Interface: The main interface is less cluttered, but a new addition is a big status window (floating gadget) on the upper right corner of your screen with large buttons for different menus. Most buttons on these menus are for other Norton products unrelated to NIS (annoying). For example button for on-line back-up (costs extra!) or mobile protection for android (free), parental control (free) etc. I havent found an easy way to get rid of this yet! (Alright! It's easy. There is a close button next to it and if you close it, it does not reappear after a restart).

3. Setting up: Most of the settings are done by default and should be fine for the average user. For example how often to scan your computer, what time of the day, which files to allow to connect to the internet etc. If you need advanced settings, most of those are just a couple of clicks away and mostly easy to find. There are some menu items that could have been done better. If you had existing trusted network information from previous NIS, those are retained which is good.

4. Security: As in previous versions, NIS was good at detecting most of the commonly bothering cookies and adware. Everytime you download a file, it is checked for viruses and if it is from a trusted website and there is a pop-up saying it is clean. Similarly, like previous versions, Norton safe search marks results from google searches as safe or not. you can check website security by looking for norton trusted symbol e.g. bank sites or amazon.com - that way you wont enter your password in a phising site.

5. What's new? Like mentioned above the annoying floating gadget is new. The primary interface is less cluttered but at the same time advanced settings are easily accessible from different menus. The new version does appear to be a little faster than 2011. might be significant on older systems.

Overall, very good protection with minimal resource usage.

Quality Internet Security Suite for 2012, September 16, 2011

This version appears to build upon the 2011 version. A simplified user interface masks an upgraded version of the 2011 interface. The user can now select to either have the simpler interface appear when opening up the Norton product, allowing for easy access to launch scans or for checking on/running live updates or otherwise one can set the product to regularly open up to the more advanced interface, displaying a revival of CPU and Norton usage meters, along with a trust level meter displaying the amount of files currently trusted by Norton that are on the computer after a reputation scan has been executed and also in conjunction to what setting one has selected beforehand for computer scanning purposes. The product appears to function well, with no real noticable slowdown in performance from the previous version thus continuing on with Norton's lighter footprint design and improvements which were introduced with the 2009 versions of Nortons. Quick scans are now automatically launched by the suite during new update periods and run daily on their own. The quickscans supposedly have now been improved upon to create a more thorough scan than on previous versions, while also offering improved upon rootkit scanning. Also, Norton's Sonar has been improved, along with the Insight Database, allowing NIS 2012 to provide a solid multiple layered level of protection/defense to the user. In addition, the firewall remains excellent, along with the anti-spam. With all of this said, it is important to realize and understand that no security suite will ever provide 100% protection to the user. Using common sense while online is of paramount importance. However, if one desires to have among the best protection currently available in a security suite for 2012, then in my opinion NIS 2012 is an excellent choice. It was again chosen as Editor's Choice by PC magazine out of the new 2012 internet security suites, and in my opinion it was chosen that for good reason.

I bought this because the 1 year sub was up on 2011 and I was able to get 2012 for cheaper than sub for another year for the 2011 version.

Install was easy but I don't see much of a difference in what 2012 offers than what 2011 had. There are a few things I don't like about 2012:

1. It scans my system a lot slower.

2. No option to totally turn off autoupdate like you could in 2011. Can turn off auto but pulse updates turn on then and gets greyed out so there is no way to have them both be off at the same time. I like to update it manually liked I did 2011 but can't now.

3. No way to turn off quick scans like you could in 2011.

4. Seems to load slower at start up when set to "aggresive" but 2011 started right away.

5. When you click on settings or any of the options the software takes longer to respond. At first I didn't think I had clicked right and tried again but it took a few seconds to respond. Future tries have the same results.

6. Constantly bugs you to sign into your norton account if you click on update and then the page has script errors and no way to turn this off. Only option is to sign or click remind me later which takes several tries and the first click on remind me later doesn't make it go away and instead just refreshes the page again.

Other than these issues it works but wish I had stayed with 2011.

Star Wars Trilogy: Apprentice of the force seems like the greatest way to fully enjoy Star Wars. This is not a bad game but as my title says, its repetative. That's not to say its a bad game, it just rehashes too much at throughout each level.

The game is comprised of five chapters, ten levels in each chapter so the game is 50 levels long. You control Luke throughout your journey through the Star Wars Trilogy. You'll begin in A New Hope and end in Return of the Jedi. The game follows the story quite closely and throws in a scene shot (not an actual scene, think of Super Star Wars) from the movie every now and then.

The game plays out simple. Each level is a 2D side-scroller where you'll work your way from one of the level to the other. When you first begin its really easy to get into it. The game doesn't present any major challenges and then you get to the moment where you have to stop to massacre a bunch of your enemies at once. Pretty soon this becomes a chore in almost every level. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have it play out the same way. Luke doesn't take much damage... and he deals out a lot. Top that off with most levels can be progressed through pretty fast so in short it feels like your doing the same thing over and over again. This also wouldn't hurt so much if the game weren't so easy.

There are a few fun levels though. The Trench of the Death Star is pretty fun, and so is the Speeder Bike chase from Return of the Jedi but these level are too few and far between. Mostly you'll just play through the side-scrolling levels. If the game didn't have 40 of these levels and had a bit more variety in the gameplay it would be a little better.

However, Luke does get lots of different moves. When you begin you can only do the basics like jump, crouch shoot and the like. By the time you get to the end of the game you'll be able to do backflips, double jumps and a whole lot more. After each chapter Luke gains another ability or two he can use. This makes it so there's plenty for you to do. I wish as the game went on though, enemies attack patterns would change. An enemy that only fire one blast at you will always only fire one blast at you. As you get further into the game the difficulty level never ups itself.

After you get through the game though, you can rush through the game playing the levels that aren't the same old side-scrolling. But that isn't enough to warrant this game for a buy.

Graphic wise the game doesn't live up to the full potential of the GBA. Visually it isn't appealing enough but it runs pretty fast and stays consistant. I haven't experienced any slow down. The game is pretty colorful but a bit more of a facelift would've been nice.

The audio in the game is disturbingly good. While John Williams classic score sounds a little odd coming from the GBA speaker at times, it matches up with the movies really well. The game also borrowed voices from the movie and dumped them in; from the Jawas to Darth Vadar. There are some original tunes but most you'll recognize from the movies.

This isn't a bad game but it also offers no replay value. Its too easy for starters and eventhough its 50 levels long you can finish it in a day or two. Should you buy it you won't have it long before you fully exploit what it has to offer. The repetativeness of each level is also tedious after a while.

Overall, this is not really a bad game but it really isn't good either. Great idea, but it doesn't live up to the potential of what it could be.

There is a lot of text in this game. I say, "Enough with this reading, lets play the game". The graphics and the music are nothing spectacular. There are better games out there. From what I've seen so far, I think they would have had a better game if they'd just ported over the code from the old "Super Star Wars" game on the Super Nintendo. The game play is very similar to that older game. You run around as Luke, shooting things. I'm guessing it's a bit redundant for me. And I know my five year old won't enjoy having to press the button to skip over all that text. Hope George Lucas puts our money to good use and deliver us an awesome movie next Summer.

Star Wars Trilogy: Apprentice of the Force is a pretty good game. You move through Star Wars IV, V and VI playing as Luke Skywalker. Along the way you gain Jedi powers and meet other characters as you work to defeat the Empire. I enjoyed this game a lot but I agree with the comments that it was too easy. I am generally not very good at video games. A game that most people defeat over a weekend takes me months. I was able to defeat the entire game in only two weeks of playing the game on and off. I thought the graphics and sounds were pretty nice. They use several detailed still pictures from the movies. The music was pretty good too. I am disappointed that this game is not nearly as nice as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Star Wars trilogy games. In those games you can play as different characters from the movie and the game story is much lengthier and difficulty much higher. There are several games for Game Boy Advance that are mostly just copies of SNES games. I was hoping Star Wars Trilogy: Apprentice of the Force would be more like that.

This one really does work on the 3DS. Now, of course, it doesn't actually work with 3DS games because of the insane encryption Nintendo put on those cartridges (in fact, we'll probably never see an Action Replay for 3DS games), but for those who still have a lot of awesome DS games that own a 3DS, this will work perfectly fine with those!

I got my AR about a week before it said. I've had no problems with it other than it doesn't come with the disc for easy code input. It doesn't freeze up like the some say it does. My advice to you if it does freeze is, MAKE SURE IT'S ACTUALLY IN ALL THE WAY!

Quite contrary to the low star reviews about the missing disk and not sticking in mine fits sung in my 3DS and am quite happy.

I've enjoyed using it to get access to events in Pokemon Soul Silver I had to miss out on like the Arceus Event where you get to choose ether Palkia, Daliga, or Giratina.

The package clearly doesn't list a cd being included and uses a USB connection to download new codes.

This is a great product and I recommend it to anyone to uses a DS and needs a helping hand in their games!

BTW, this only works with DS games not 3DS. Sorry.

Update June 11 2012.....

Runs quiet and delivers stable reliable power for the average system what else can I say. For the money it's a great value and it warrants consideration by anyone building a typical system, even one with a mid range graphics card like my HD 5770 so long as you do not intend to overclock ANYTHING !

It should be obvious that if you wish to safely overclock or push you're system then you NEED an enthusiast grade power supply and you WILL pay for it $ $ $ $

Simply put when used proeprly, this power supply is a 5 Star unit and a top value under 40 dollars!

I don't have high processing demands, but I did buy this power supply for a budget gaming rig I was building, and it works great. There are plenty of power connection options here, so no one will be left out. Plenty of Molex, SATA, +12 for everyone.

This unit powers a quad core phenom unit with 500GB HDD and 2GB of RAM. My NVIDIA GT430 1GB DDR3 video card also has plenty of juice as well.

If you are looking for a good budget power supply, this is the one for you!

Cooler Master also sells a case with an included 420watt power supply on Amazon as well. You can save 10-20 bucks if you go that route, but you lose 40 watts of POWER!

Yeah I bought this because it was relatively cheap and appeared to have good reviews. Turns out that it has an annoying adjustable fan! Its not that it occasionally gets louder, it adjusts speed from low to high every 2 minutes, literally! It kicks into high speed for about 20 seconds and then its quiet for about 2-3 minutes, then it goes to high speed and so on. This will not stop.
My computer is at idle when this is happening. It doesnt have any GPU cards or anything stressing it at all. This PSU is too annoying to keep. I will be getting a different PSU.
This would be fine for a computer that is hidden in a closet or something like that. If you are looking for a quiet computer, this is NOT the PSU for you. This PSU is the loudest thing in my case!

Just to balance it out a bit, this PSU has functioned well for my needs and has been reliable. From a reliability and build standpoint, it has done well for my needs. However, noise is a huge factor in may peoples builds and I think the company pulled a fast one on the customer with this one and could have designed it to work better with heat dissipation and fan settings. Really, the jump in fan noise is ridiculous considering that it could have been designed to run a bit louder but constant.

I guess that's what you do when you want to claim certain low noise level specs and you want to fool the customer into thinking those are constant low noise levels huh?

Nice Bag Features - Needs to be Wider, March 14, 2009

I have started traveling for business and needed to replace my existing computer bag. My old one was a soft cloth Jantzen bag in which I could stuff everything - laptop, files, extra cable, purse contents, etc. Of course it weighed a ton afterward! :-) It also did not look like a computer bag (which I loved).

The features that sold me on this bag were:
1.) Looks - it may be hard to tell in photos, but there is stitching detail around the bag that helps to set off the bag design. My husband likes that more than I do, but I have to admit it is a nice detail. I, too, chose the red - a very nice, dark red color.

2.) The extra pocket in front - great to grab pens, glasses, keys, airline boarding passes, small (and I mean small) notebook, etc.

3.) I thought I would enjoy having the laptop sleeve - I've been looking for a laptop bag that had almost a 'bag within a bag' so that I could carry the larger bag while traveling and when at a customer site, carry a small, sleek bag with just the laptop and charger. However, this is not the bag for that. Due to the width limitations (discussed below), I have not used the sleeve at all.

4.) Length / width: length would accommodate my laptop and width was somewhere 'in the middle' of laptops being offered on the market.

What I do like about the bag is:
1.) Its looks - as I said, very professional

2.) Leather quality and color - it adds some weight to have a leather bag over a nylon or cloth one, but there is nothing better for longetivity. I expect the leather to age nicely. The red color should complement anything I choose to wear.

3.) There is a pocket on the front (described above) and two additional zippered compartments inside.

4.) The handles are a good length to put over the shoulder without having to have another shoulder strap. (I'm 5'5") I can easily carry the bag over my shoulder or with my hand.

5.) It does allow me to carry the minimal amount of things I need to bring with me on a business trip.

What I don't like about this bag:
1.) The bag looks so nice, I wanted to use it both as a purse and a laptop bag so I could conveniently travel with just 2 items - it and my roll-on suitcase. The laptop bag needs to be a bit wider to achieve that. I could not add my wallet (the bag would not zip) until I took out photos and some extraneous frequent purchase cards. Also, all pockets are very deep so it is hard to keep your lipstick, for example, easily accessible without having to dig through everything else at the bottom of a pocket. (I'm thinking of finding (making) some zippered bags to keep similar items together - easier to find and store in the pocket.)

2.) As mentioned by another reviewer, the middle zippered pocket, where you would expect to be able to put a notebook portfolio, will not accommodate it. So that means that it must be put in the same compartment where you put your peripherals - charger, mouse, cable, wallet, etc. Not a big problem, but you have to ensure you've shoved the peripherals aside so the portfolio can slide to the bottom. If you only travel with a few loose papers or a paper pad without the portfolio cover, this would not be a problem.

3.) A small item, there is a nice key holder hook in the front pocket, but it needs to have a longer length. It is so short, you can't raise it up to hook your keys onto it. You must put your hand with your keys inside the not-very-wide pocket and manage to slide your keys onto the hook. However, handy to find your keys, once done. (I'm getting better at it)

This bag is really nice. lots of room. I dont use the laptop sleeve in this or any of my bags so i can have more room for files with the laptop. My 15" sony fits great along with the periferals. the leather is soft but sturdy. handle is a nice over the shoulder length without being too long. it's a little darker and a tiny bit greyer than i was expecting but the color is beautiful. my only complaint is that the center zippered file compartment is not quite wide enough for a file folder. a little incovenient but the bag is beautiful. Wish i coudl afford one in every color.

This is my second McKlein USA bag and I am pleased once again. It's a beautiful bag and I get compliments about once a week. The quality is top-notch and not only is it attractive but also very durable. I generally carry it over my shoulder and the handle is plenty long enough to be comfortable for my 5'9 frame. The front pocket has a nice organizer. My only complaint is that it could be a little bit deeper in order to accomodate more easily my medium sized water bottle. This bag is more of a streamline breifcase so if you plan on lugging a bunch of stuff around, this is not the bag for you. It's also a made of a thick leather and is definitely not the lightest bag available. For the price, an excellent bag.

These tools are meant to be given to someone as a joke I think, not for anyone to do anything meaningful around a home. They are made of flimsy plastic and weak metal. The screws I have encountered in my home were more durable than the screwdriver head -- the metal on the tool stripped up rather than the screw, so the tools were ruined in first use. The drill is a complete joke since it has zero power to even assemble pre-drilled holes for screws -- again, the screw lasted longer than the drill bit. VERY, VERY disappointed in this. I'm sure someone else out there has pink tools for women that are not a complete flop. Why else would there be people selling their used sets from this very web-site!

I asked for a set of tools for Mother's Day. I do a lot of decorating and home repair. Most of the time I have trouble finding my husband's tools. When I do find them some are too heavy and awkward for me to use (drill, battery charged screw driver, etc..).

I was extremely disappointed with the Appollo 135pc tool set. It reminds me of a toy set I bought for my son when he was 10 and wanted to help Dad with repairs. The pliers and wrench are too small for my grip and the hammer is smaller than I thought it would be. If you're looking to hang up some pictures this would be fine. But if you're looking to do more than that I would not recommend this set.

I love my new tool kit! I mainly bought it for the pink drill, hammer, box cutter, scissors, wrench....well just about everything. I used the drill to screw a nail in the wall to hang a picture and it did the job well, and it's light weight (great for over head positions). But don't expect it to work like a Dewalt hammer drill. It's only 4.8 volts with little torque! I use the box cutter all the time because I'm constanly cutting up boxes from Amazon orders. The little screw drivers came in handy too to replace the batteries on my car remote control. It also comes with a box of extra screws nails, ect. If you are a woman in construction, or a SERIOUS do it yourselfer, this is NOT the kit for you. You will not be satisfied. Dewalt has some nice light weight tools. This kit is definately just for small stuff around the house which is a necessity. I can't count the numerous times when I wanted a light drill to assemble a desk, or shelf and I had to use a rusty old screw driver that hurt my hand. This would make a great gift for some of my girlfriends! Cute and fun and just for her! I give this kit 5 stars for the quality and its' purpose.

FOUR MONTHS LATER: I've been using my tool kit quite often. I haven't used everything, but I'll tell about what I have used.
1. Cordless drill: First let me correct myself, this is NOT a drill it's a cordless screwdriver (even thought they call it a drill). If you want a pink drill, they sell them on ebay. The origianl company is in the UK called pinktoolbox and part of the money goes to breast cancer just like the apollo line of oink tools. As fars as this cordless driver goes, I wish it had a bit more torque. But it can do light jobs. One of the many tasks I did was assemble a stand for my mother's new digital tv. I also hung up picture, ect. The bits are good.
2. Box cutter: can get annoying. I order A LOT from Amazon and I need a good box cutter to cut up the boxes for recycling and this one sucks! When I try to cut boxes with this thing, the blade rides back up into the plastic casing. Not very useful :(
3. I worry about using this hammer on any heavy project. There is a label on the hammer that reads, "This tool can be made to chip if struck against a hardened nail......". You do the math!
4. What works great: measuring tape, leveler, percision screwdrivers and scissors.
5. Have not used yet: wrench, pliers, tape and putty knife.

Again, I still love this kit even months later, but they should have made a better pink hammer and drill. I only paided 29.99, now they raised the price to 39.99. They should have raised the quality. But I still say it's a must have for women who do SMALL jobs around the house. This kit gets used A LOT. It's sooooo handy and I'm glad I bought it!
