Discover our oceans and waterways

Whale watching in 2019 was been HUGE so make sure you book your 2020 trip now. Right now you can discover the life in our oceans on a discovery charter and choose from Bermagui, Merimbula or Eden. Whales, dolphins, sea eagles, albatross and even penguins abound. Or stay closer to shore – take an oyster tour of Pambula Lake, paddle the 400kms of rivers and estuaries or take the wharf trail and throw in a fishing line from one of our famous wharves.

Snap Bermagui’s natural icons

Bermagui’s gaining a reputation as one of the most “insta worthy” towns on the Sapphire Coast. Horsehead Rock, Camel Rock, The Blue Pool and the Cuttagee Tree are all feted and captured over and over again by photographers, nature enthusiasts and happy snappers alike. Find out all about them here. And while you’re in Bermi, why not stay overnight so you can stop in at one of the great restaurants, cafes and bars that dot this picturesque town.

Take a history lesson

Take the Killer Whale Trail around Twofold Bay, uncover the dramatic history of whaling from 1828-1930 and learn about the unique relationship between whalers and the wild killer whales.

In Spring these sites become perfect vantage points to view humpback whales as they migrate close to the coast. Take the opportunity to explore Eden and spend some extra time at the Killer Whale Museum or the working port of Snug Cove.

Explore Merimbula

Visit any number of Merimbula’s stunning beaches (Bar, Middle, Main or Mitchies, just to name a few). Or the Merimbula Boardwalk, which curls around top lake, its over-water timber structure providing a great opportunity to get up close and personal with pristine water and sea life.

In Merimbula town, discover great eateries serving the best of local produce and boutique stores featuring art, clothing, homewares and gifts. Take a seat on a whale watching tour, have a round of barefoot bowls or grab a picnic and head outdoors.

Come and discover a new part of town when you visit our Coast.

Merimbula, where the ocean meets the lake. Bermagui, where fishing is king. Pambula, where the town is little but the vibe is big. Bega, where the dairy heartland is. Eden, where the ships and whales come in. Tathra, where nature is, well, everywhere. And many more.

Snow has fallen in Nimmitabel and it seems winter has arrived on the South Coast. But here in Tathra the sun is shining on early morning walkers, coffee drinkers, swimmers and SUP boarders, and there are still the barefoot amongst us. The low-slung sun finds its way into the heart of this Eastern facing town, warming cafes, decks and front rooms, and drawing you outside into our nature.

Spend mornings on the beach with only the bellbirds and oyster catchers for company, shake out the cobwebs and stretch out your legs. Take a hike through one of our many National Parks; Mimosa Rocks to the north, or Bournda to the South. This is the perfect time of year to explore our coastal walks and landscapes: Forest walks through tall spotted gums and Barrawang ferns, by cool inlets and rivers and along secret coastal fringes in Mimosa Rocks NP. Or spend mornings exploring the mirror like waters and the long, empty beach between Bournda Lagoon and Wallagoot Lake, where cormorants and black swans, terns and lyrebirds have their homes, and you may not see another person at all.

A walk around Wallagoot Lake is peaceful and enchanting. Image: David Rogers

Stay close to town, hire a kayak from Tathra Beach & Bike and get out onto the splendid river, spend calm, clear mornings in the mist that rolls down the Bega River towards the sea. Or simply walk the pristine sands from the Surf Club to the river mouth and back, ready for an excellent coffee and perhaps a fine French pastry.

Tathra’s food scene has gone through a quiet revolution lately. Breakfast, lunch, brunch, and some of the best coffee on the NSW Coast is being served up in new and refurbished cafés like The Gap, open from 6am, where you can also update your surf wear. Wild Orchid café serves sublime breakfasts, smoothies, fresh juice and lunch dishes. Then of course the iconic Tathra Wharf Local, serving coffee made with beans roasted in Canberra at ONA Coffee, a cabinet overflowing with sweet temptations, savoury tarts and pies, and where you can curl up in the sun in one of the cosy corners, the waves shifting under the boards at your feet. At Blend Café & Providore, aside from truly excellent coffee, you can stock up your Tathra pantry and picnic hamper with cheeses from France, Italy and Spain, gourmet small-goods, fresh house-baked sourdough bread and baguettes, and also hot and crunchy croissants. Left your coffee machine at home? No problem, Blend can sort you out with beans and machines!

Enhance your Tathra picnic or grazing table further with some local wine or spirits from the newly re-opened Tathra Cellars. Located at the top of the hill, you’ll find wine from our local vineyards and also our very own Bega Valley gin. North of Eden Gin is made just outside Bega in ancient copper iambic stills. All the botanicals are measured out to a secret recipe, and many have been hand foraged, like the kelp gathered from Camel rock near Bermagui. Also behind the forests of Bermagui is a valley known as Coolagolite, where the grapes for our local wines are grown – Breakfast Creek and Rusty Fig. Give the good people at Tathra Cellars a call, or just drop in – there’s often a sneaky little tasting going on.

A day trip to Bermagui will reap many rewards besides winery hopping. If you’re interested in the work of regional artists stop off and spend time at Ivy Hill Gallery in Tanja, Ivy Hill features the work of significant contemporary artists, both emerging and established, many of whom live and work in the region. The gallery is located on a farm in the fertile Wapengo Valley between Tathra and Bermagui, a well-known artistic and cultural haven. Once in Bermi township, head to Narek Gallery, and check out contemporary Australian ceramics, glass, textiles, wood and metal works.

Tathra’s beloved wharf has a place in history as the only remaining timber deep-water wharf on the East Coast of Australia. From the departure of the last cargo steamer in 1954, the wharf fell into disrepair, and was officially re-opened in 1988. Today, as well as great coffee and eats at Tathra Wharf Local you’ll also find hand-picked art, local ceramics and Tanja resident Tanya Riese’s beautiful printed lamp shades.

Above the café and gallery is the maritime focussed Tathra Museum. Built from 1862, the Tathra Wharf still stands grandly on the headland, and the museum provides the village with a showcase for its maritime history, kept open by dedicated volunteers.

There’s just something about Tathra, the heart of NSW’s Sapphire Coast.

Surrounded by forest, pristine seas and sky, the little town pulses with health and life. In the warmer months the seaside village stretches at the seams with families and holiday makers. But in the middle of the year the wild winter magic of Tathra comes to the fore.

Famous for its maritime history and award-winning oysters, cool Tathra offers up some special secrets in Winter. Long beach walks where your footprints are the first, canoe paddles through early morning mist accompanied only by birdsong, and steaming coffees looking out over the stunning sea vistas. Tathra in the cooler months is a family playground of a singular type.

Winter in Tathra is the perfect place and time to put away screens and get yourself and your family out into nature. It’s proven that time spent outdoors can help kids with attention spans, depression, weight, and healthy eye function. A load of oxygen is sent to our brains and helps to get rid of all that stress. Relieved?!

Its also the perfect place to come and indulge in some blood pumping activity for all the family while generating some wonder and inspiration through nature.

As well as a great place to hike, surf and safely learn SUP and kayak skills, XC mountain biking is fast becoming one of the major attractions to the area. Over 50kms of hand built, well cared-for trails surround the Tathra township, comprising some of the best healthy fun experiences to be had. You will be flying through the spectacular colours of a regenerating forest, down through gullies towards the beautiful Tathra seas.

Bundadung Bike Trail Network

The Tathra Mountain Bike Club has worked hard creating Bundadung (Wombat, spirit of the forest). Along with the Bega Local Aboriginal Lands Council, Tathra Nature Trust, and private landholders, a spectacular network of directional single track trails has been created. The Bundadung area features 30kms of high quality trails, and the Tathra Fire Shed area boasts another 20kms, from challenging to beginner levels.

If you’re starting out on your MTB journey, or teaching your kids the basics, there are concrete pathways and the Ford’s Farm headland rides, plus there’s an excellent Skills Park, or mini-BMX track, with rollers and jumps. At any level, the singletrack trails are beautiful and the faster you ride, the more difficult they become.

The guys from Tathra Beach & Bike know all the best trails.

Need equipment?

Need a bike-seat for a young passenger, an E-bike to help with those gruelling Tathra ascents? Or maybe you couldn’t fit your surfboard in with all the bike gear? Aaron and his team at Tathra Beach and Bike, and their new surf shop/café at The Gap in Tathra, will sort you out with everything you need. Aaron and his crew are passionate about what they do, they’ve been riding and looking after the MTB trails for years, so know them like the backs of their hands. They ride it, they know it.

Other adventures to be had in Tathra:

If bikes are not your thing, get on top of the crystal-clear waters. The clean, safe waterways around Tathra are hard to resist. Bring your own equipment and hit the hidden lagoons and beaches of Mimosa Rocks National Park, or hire kayaks, SUPs or surfboards and hone your skills metres from your Tathra accommodation. Try paddling at Bega Rivermouth at Mogareeka, Tathra Beach, or nearby Wallagoot Lake, there are places to go where the only sounds you hear are your paddles and the birds. Cruise out in the misty mornings then head back to Tathra for truly excellent coffee and breakfast.

A full day or a few hours of hiking in the Mimosa Rocks National Parks to the north, and Bournda in the south get you in touch with the unspoilt wilderness of this coastline. Kangarutha Walk, from Kianinny Bay to Wallagoot Lake will have you feeling like a true pioneer, discovering hidden places for the firt time. Lyrebirds, seabirds, stingrays and even the occasional seal, can be spotted on this hike of 9kms (each way).

Tathra and surrounds offer some spectacular beach fishing opportunities, but if you just want to stick close to the town centre, that’s covered too. Tathra’s skate park and Dragon park playground are in the middle of town, next to BBQ and picnic facilities, so the kids can run riot on ramps or play with our friendly dragon. If you don’t feel like cooking, pop over the road for Tathra’s famous Fish and Chips, and the Tathra Beach General Store for supplies. You could also make use of the outdoor exercise park, situated next to the Surf Club, which has equipment to suit all ages and abilities.

If you like our local birdlife and want to get up close, visit On the Perch bird park where you and the kids can learn about our gorgeous feathered friends from knowledgeable keepers, and also interact with them in walk-in aviaries. Or try Merimbula’s Magic Mountain two-hour ‘Tree Climb Challenge’, open in the July School holidays.

The local food scene in Tathra has gone through a renaissance in the last twelve months. Some of the best coffee on the NSW Coast is being served up in new and refurbished cafés like Blend Café & Providore, where you can indulge your coffee fetish with various blends but also imported cheese, gourmet goods and freshly baked sourdough bread, croissants & vegan treats. Wild Orchid café serves sublime breakfasts, smoothies, fresh juice and contemporary lunch dishes. Then of course the iconic Tathra Wharf, where you can indulge all your senses, staring across the bay to stunning cliffs, spotting whales or dolphins, fishing, or munching on some excellent meals, cakes, pastries, and delicious coffee. Of course, Tathra and Tanja’s famous oysters abound, available from the award-winning Tathra Oysters at the top of the hill, and also from Mimosa Meats our local butcher.

There are dinner options for retreating couples or the whole family at Fat Tony’s Bar & Restaurant in the historic Harbourmaster’s House up at the top of Tathra, and also the newly refurbished Tathra Hotel, with lovely interiors, sweeping ocean views and live music every Sunday by the fire. Of course, down at the beach, there are our two clubs, Tathra Bowling Club and the Tathra Country Club, so just relax and grab the courtesy buses as you need them.

The Sapphire Coast is known as one of the most significant recreational fishing regions in the southern hemisphere and our coastline encompasses enormous variety and fishing opportunities.

If you’re bringing your boat or your fishing gear to town this year, read on for more information about where to go, what to do and what’s new.

Bermagui in the north is a fishing mecca within Australia. Only 11 nautical miles (that’s about 20 kms) off the continental shelf it’s home to a huge number of fish species including all the big predators. Whether you’re looking for game fishing, deep sea, reef rock, beach or estuary fishing, Bermagui offers plenty of variety and plenty of exotic fish. To help you get out amongst the wild things, charter boats operate year round, offering fishing packages that can be tailored to suit your needs with both share and private charters on offer. Take some time to visit the Fisherman’s Wharf at the famous Bermagui Harbour and grab a bite to eat before or after your big day on the water.

Eden has just had a shout out as one of Australia’s top 5 boating holiday spots by one of our most prestigious boating magazines. And no wonder. Eden is a well-known fishing port, with direct ocean access and shelter from prevailing winds – perfect for all kinds of fishing. With a massive boat ramp, floating jetty and breakwall at Quarantine bay, you can be out to sea and amongst all the reef action in no time at all. Or try fishing one of the many lakes or river systems – Wonboyn, Curalo, Broadwater and Yowaka just to name a few. Then end the day in a more relaxing way with a twilight cruise around spectacular Twofold Bay with Cat Balou. Take in the evening skies with drinks and nibbles in hand as you watch the coastline glide by.

Merimbula’s newly created artificial reef has been in place since September 2018 and is already proving an excellent habitat for a wide range of fish species common to the region. (The DPI notes that artificial reefs generally increase the number of fish stock as they support a safe habit for marine life to thrive). The reef is located 2.5km southeast of the Merimbula estuary entrance in approximately 32 metres of water and is already proving a hit with local clubs. Follow the link here for GPS co-ordinates to the Artificial Reef. The flat, clear waters of Merimbula Lake are bordered by beaches, walks and boardwalks and home to famous oysters and vibrant sea life. Here you can hire a tinny from Top Lake Boat Hire, plus rods and bait. Easy!

But it doesn’t all have to be about getting in a boat. There’s plenty of beaches to cast your line, like the spectacular Pambula River mouth or Kianniny Bay and the northern end of Tathra Beach at Tathra. These are great beachfront bases for your fishing expeditions, as well as walking, swimming, snorkelling and diving. Or drop in a line from Merimbula or Tathra wharf. Historic Tathra Wharf is not only one of the most significant structures on the Sapphire Coast, it’s renowned as one of the best fishing wharves in all of Australia. Plenty of fish abound with flathead, snapper, leatherjacket, salmon and red rock being the most popular.

Our fishing folk are a social bunch and there’s no shortage of friendly locals happy to lend a hand or pass on some insider tips. If you want to know what’s being caught where this Summer, Merimbula Big Game & Lake Fishing Club is open every Friday night from 6pm for drinks and nibbles. Visitors are most welcome and you can expect to hear the local fishing report plus enjoy the magnificent view from their jetty at Spencer Park, right on Merimbula Lake. Or just drop into one of the local clubs or tackle shops for a chat and some solid advice.

But if you’re the more experienced fisherman and seeking a bit of a challenge, we’ve got a long list of competitions every year, up and down our coast that will test your mettle.

Whatever way you choose to spend your days on the water, if you’re heading out on the boat or planning on going rock fishing, make sure to check the BOM for weather and surf conditions before you go. And if you catch the big one, don’t forget to tag us too #sapphirecoastnsw

Perfectly positioned for short stays from Canberra, Gippsland and the South Coast, our coastal villages are the perfect base for a unique coastal adventure with the whales.

What to take? Water, a snack, your camera or binoculars, a smart device (Down load the Wild About Whales App before you go so you can log sightings), and wear comfortable clothing, with a weatherproof layer on top.

If you are bringing the kids, see our tips here.

1. Kangarutha Walking Track, Bournda National Park.

At 9 kilometres it’s not our longest walk, but it is one of the most challenging day walks. The reward? Access to the most remote and rugged headlands between Merimbula and Tathra.

Enjoy the views from towering cliff tops, descend through pockets of rainforest and look for animal footprints on small secluded beaches. If you like to set a brisk pace you can do this in 3.5 hours each way, but if you plan on taking it a little slower leave 5 hours. Or, do the walk in stages. Try Kianinny Bay at Tathra to Boulder Bay (1.7kms) or Wallagoot Lake Boat Club to Turingal Head (1.8km).

2 Haycock Point to Barmouth Beach, Ben Boyd National Park

An easy grade 4.8km return walk that takes about two hours and will immerse you in the beauty of Ben Boyd National Park.
Situated in the northern part of the park, the path leads north along the coast to Broadwater estuary. The track takes you through woodlands and windswept coastal heath, with excellent vantage points on rugged headlands and cliffs offering.

A vibrant landscape, it’s also home to echidnas, wallabies, kangaroos and goannas. Get directions & read more.

3 Tura Beach Headland

This 9km track takes you through some spectacular coastal landscapes. Explore local icons like Paynes Island (Wallaga Lake Bridge) Bermagui Blue Pool, Murunna Point, Camel Rock, and Horseshoe Bay (where a southern right whale calf was born in 2014) and Dickinson Point.
Several entry/exit points allow for shorter walks or the fit can try the whole 9km.

You can also stay in Bermagui overnight, and continue the walk south along beaches and headlands to Cuttagee Lake & Beach (also 9km).

5 Wajurda Point, Mimosa Rocks National Park

This short walk begins at Moon Bay carpark, and leads you through eucalypt forest and coastal heath to a small but breathtaking lookout. The panoramic views of the coast and Nelson Beach are quite a treat. In fact it’s a coastal quartet that makes for a fabulous day at the beach.

Back at the car park, you can take the steps down to the blue waters of the tiny Moon Bay (500m return) then drive down to Nelson’s Beach for a picnic.

For directions, click here.

6 Green Cape Lighthouse to Pulpit Rock

If you don’t have the time to do a 30km Light to Light Walk between Boyd’s Tower and Green Cape Light House you can have a taste of it on this 4 kilometre section. The whales come so close to this promontory that you can hear them breathe as they feed and splash about.

The walk takes you from the splendid light house to Pulpit Rock, which sits high over the ocean and gives you incredible views almost all the way to Eden. It’s one of our most expansive views.

Pack a picnic for this one, Green Cape is about 45 kilometres south of Eden and you won’t want to leave in a hurry. There are also tours of the light house, and accommodation in the refurbished keeper’s cottages. Directions here.

The Light to Light is a 32 kilometre walk. More information here.

There’s a magic coastal quartet to be discovered at Mimosa Rocks National Park.

Nelson’s Lagoon & Beach, Moon Bay and Wajurda Point are so close to each other you can visit them all in around an hour, and they are a couple of kilometres north of Tathra on Nelson Lake Road.

They each offer a different nature experience, an elevated lookout on a rugged headland, an exposed surf beach, a sheltered lagoon and a small bay that makes you feel like you are the first one to discover it.

The top level car parks has access to Moon Bay and Wajurda Point, while the bottom car park is where you access Nelson’s Lagoon and Beach.

Pied Oyster Catcher.

Nelson Lagoon is a 300m flat walk takes you among the Spotted Gums and Burrawong Palms to the mouth of the stunning estuary. The lagoon offers excellent snorkelling, swimming, paddling and estuary fishing.

It is also a haven for birdwatchers, with Pied Oyster Catchers, striated thornbills, bell birds and many more species all thriving, especially in spring.

Nelson Beach is great for surfing and fishing and is protected from north and south winds.

Access the beach directly from the car park, or take the lagoon walk if you feel like a longer walk.

The 1km return walk to Wajurda Point 500m takes you through heathland whose growth is progressively stunted the closer you get to the point. There awaits an epic viewing platform, offering views over the beach and lagoon and excellent whale watching between May and September.

Tucked away, Moon Bay has a 150 meter walking track with 172 steps, but the walk is worth it.

Wajurda Point.

Look for rusted stubs of mooring rings and grooves cut into the cliffs, these are left from a time when timber and farm products were loaded onto barges to be ferried to waiting steam ships.

Other things to do at Tathra

Mountain Bike Tathra is the mecca of mountain biking on the South Coast. BYO or hire from Tathra Beach & Bike.

Bushwalk The Kangarutha Track is a rite of passage for bushwalkers. A 9km (one way) challenging hike that elevates you to remote headlands then drops you on a wild beaches.

On the water Flat water can be found at Mogareeka (which also has a boat ramp) or Nelsons Lagoon which is perfect for SUP and kayak.

Moon Bay.

Coastal waters can be accessed at Kianinny Boat Ramp.

Further North

Explore the rest of Mimosa Rocks National Park – Gillards, Middle Beach, Bithry Inlet and Aragunnu combine more lagoons and beaches with opportunities for camping and history.

Mimosa Rocks National Park stretches almost all the way to Bermagui, a scenic 30 minute drive from here. Bermagui is a village a little bigger than Tathra that’s set along a boutique fishing harbour, a beach, and the huge tidal estuary.
