Solar Thermal Energy (STE) is a technology for harnessing solar energy for thermal energy (heat). Solar thermal collectors are defined by the USA Energy Information Administration as low, medium, or high-temperature collectors.

Low temperature collectors are flat plates generally used to heat swimming pools. Medium temperature collectors are also usually flat plates but are used for creating hot water for residential and commercial use. High temperature collectors concentrate sunlight using mirrors or lenses and are generally used for electric power production.

STE is different from photovoltaics, which convert solar energy directly into electricity. While only 600 megawatts of solar thermal power is up and running worldwide in October 2009 according to Dr David Mills of Ausra, another 400 megawatts is under construction and there are 14000 megawatts of serious concentrating solar thermal (CST) projects being developed.

In order to facilitate detailed solar system simulations and to make such simulations readily available to solar engineers in their daily practice of system dimensioning and performance calculations, user friendly software for personal computers has been developed as a system specific simulation program for a frequently installed group of water based solar system types.

The program package has been developed as part of the OPSYS R&D-program of the Commission of the European Communities and has been named EURSOL (Official Website) The set of system configurations considered includes different types of thermal solar systems for space heating and hot water production.

In order to make photovoltaic power generation an economically viable option, the cost of solar cell devices has to be lowered. Nowadays most solar cells are manufactured from crystalline Si substrates with a typical thickness of 200 300 mm. Since the base material for these devices is electronic-grade Si, a large part of the cost of the final solar cell is related to the active material.

In order to reduce these costs, a transition from these 'bulk crystalline Si solar cells' has to made to thin-film technologies with reduced usage of active material in the device. These thin films can consist of crystalline, protocrystalline, or amorphous silicon. In addition, II-VI polycrystalline compounds like CdTe or ternary compounds like CuIn(Ga)Se2(S)-alloys are being investigated and developed. In the case of thin films of Si, there is a broad range of deposition technologies.

Although these technologies have not yet come onto the market to any great degree, there has been considerable progress over the last years both in terms of technology development, upscaling and in-depth understanding. Currently, there is strong growth of R&D in the field of organic and hybrid solar cells.

In order to exploit the full potential of these materials, novel and radically different cell concepts have been suggested. At contrast to the classical planar homo- and heterojunction structures, these concepts are based on three-dimensional structures to generate and collect the carriers.

The most prominent examples of these structures are the bulk donor acceptor heterojunction cells, the nanocrystalline photo-electrochemical cell (also known as Gr tzel cell) and eta cells. In fact, these device concepts are a clear illustration of the possibilities offered by nanostructured materials to further enhance photovoltaic performance and to reduce the solar cell cost.

This book is the first comprehensive overview covering the different thin-film solar cell technologies from the more classical ones (a-Si H, CdTe, CIS) to the novel ones which are making their way from the lab to actual production.

The Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) is a small, free-flying satellite carrying four scientific instruments to measure the solar radiation incident at the top of the Earth s atmosphere.

SORCE was successfully launched from NASA s Kennedy Space Center on 25 January 2003. As one element of NASA s Earth Science Enterprise, the SORCE mission is a joint effort between NASA and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP).

The primary objectives of SORCE are to make daily measurements of Total Solar Irradiance, TSI, and spectral irradiance over almost the entire spectral range from soft X-rays, through the visible, and into the infrared.

The SORCE instruments the Total Irradiance Monitor (TIM), the Spectral Irradiance Monitor (SIM), two Solar Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiments (SOLSTICE), and the XUV Photometer System (XPS) are currently measuring the Sun s total and spectral irradiance with unprecedented accuracy and precision capable of establishing solar variability.

In addition to securing a reliable long-term database with which to characterize solar radiative forcing of climate and global change, the SORCE program seeks to foster new understanding of the origins of the solar variations and the physical pathways by which the Earth s atmosphere, oceans, and land respond on multiple time scales.

Solar power is the result of converting sunlight into electricity

Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly with concentrating solar power (CSP), which normally focuses the sun's energy to boil water which is then used to provide power.

The solar power gained from photovoltaics can be used to eliminate the need for purchased electricity (usually electricity gained from burning fossil fuels) or, if energy gained from photovoltaics exceeds the home's requirements, the extra electricity can be sold back to the home's supplier of energy, typically for credit.

The largest solar power plants, like the 354 MW SEGS, are concentrating solar thermal plants, but recently multi-megawatt photovoltaic plants have been built. Completed in 2008, the 46 MW Moura photovoltaic power station in Portugal and the 40 MW Waldpolenz Solar Park in Germany are characteristic of the trend toward larger photovoltaic power stations. Much larger ones are proposed, such as the 550 MW Topaz Solar Farm, and the 600 MW Rancho Cielo Solar Farm.

The 3-D Heliosphere at Solar Maximum: Proceesings of the 34th ESLAB Sy

The global structure of the heliosphere changes dramatically with the solar circle. Our knowledge of the heliosphere in three dimensions under solar-minimum conditions has advanced significantly in the last 10 years, largely as a result of the on-going ESA/NASA Ulysses mission. Similar advances in our understanding of the heliosphere at solar maximum are to be expected with the return of Ulysses to the Sun's polar regions in 2000/2001.

The papers in this volume address a wide range of topics related to the solar-maximum heliosphere, and include many of the latest findings from Ulysses and other space-based missions. Ground-based studies and theoretical modeling are also well represented.

Specific questions include what are the dominant processes that determine the global structure of the inner heliosphere under conditions of high solar activity, and what are the key differences between the high-latitude heliosphere at solar maximum and solar minimum?
