ProdataKey (PDK) recently launched a Geofencing feature in PDK.io

Geofencing brings location-aware security to mobile credentials.

PDK Geofencing is also a scalable feature, suitable for systems with a singular Cloud Node or Cloud Nodes spread across multiple sites

DRAPER, Utah — Cloud-based access control solutions provider ProdataKey (PDK) recently launched Geofencing, a new feature in PDK.io that “brings location-aware security to mobile credentials,” according to the company announcement.

Geofencing allows administrators to define a virtual boundary around a site or system. When enabled, mobile credentials can be configured to function only when a user’s device is within a specified distance of that location.

This provides administrators with additional control over when mobile credentials are available for use while maintaining the convenience of mobile access, according to the PDK announcement.

This capability “enhances security, reduces risk of credential misuse and modernizes the mobile access experience through policy-driven enforcement within PDK.io,” the announcement says. This “allows for the ultimate confidence in mobile credential issuance and management.”

Geofencing is also a scalable feature, suitable for systems with a singular Cloud Node or Cloud Nodes spread across multiple sites, according to the company announcement.

What Does PDK Geofencing Do?

“Geofencing adds a layer of real-world awareness to PDK Mobile Credentials,” says Couper Sorenson, senior product manager at PDK, in the company announcement. “By letting PDK.io respond automatically when someone enters or leaves a defined area, dealers and site managers can trust that access is granted at the right time and in the right place.

“Within the PDK Access App, it also creates peace of mind, allowing users the convenience of a tap-to-unlock experience while ensuring access only works when the user is physically where they’re supposed to be,” he says.

Geofencing is configured within PDK.io through Access Rules and can be applied to mobile credentials issued through the PDK Access app. The feature supports flexible geofence distances to accommodate different property types and deployment environments.

Geofencing requires PDK Access app credentials, enabled mobile location services and 2.4.x Cloud Nodes or higher. Geofencing relies on standard mobile GPS accuracy and precision may vary depending on environment, signal strength and device capabilities.

ATLANTA and NEW YORK — Honeywell and the National Hockey League (NHL) recently announced a new multi‑year global partnership naming Honeywell the Official Building Automation and Energy Management Partner of the NHL.

Under the agreement, Honeywell “will support the NHL’s efforts of modernizing and creating more resilient, energy efficient arenas, practice facilities and community rinks across North America,” according to the joint announcement.

Honeywell provides scalable and artificial intelligence-enabled building automation technologies “to help facilities manage increasing power and cooling demands, improve uptime for revenue-critical operations and enable reliable, uninterrupted events,” according to the company announcement.

These solutions integrate fire and life safety, security, access and energy management “to help safeguard fans, players and staff, while improving operational performance and the overall gameday experience,” the announcement says. The partnership “also supports community rinks by helping them operate more efficiently and maintain secure, well-managed environments that make hockey more accessible at the local level.”

Why is Honeywell Partnering with the NHL?

“Today’s hockey venues are highly complex, dynamic environments where efficiency and reliability directly impact performance and business outcomes,” says Juan Picon, president, Americas, for Honeywell Building Automation, in the joint announcement.

“By optimizing building automation and energy management, Honeywell is well-positioned to help the league, its teams and local communities create more resilient, digitally enabled facilities that reduce operating costs, protect revenue streams and deliver seamless, secure and high‑quality fan experiences,” he says.

“Our business requires an unprecedented level of interconnectivity and flexibility to deliver best-in-class experiences vital to the game on the ice and the fan experience off the ice,” says David Lehanski, NHL executive vice president, business development & innovation, in the announcement.

“The partnership with Honeywell unlocks proven technology and expertise that can help our clubs expand efficiencies, intelligence and optimization, while creating a blueprint for strategic, long-term investments to support community rinks that are essential to the future of our great game,” he says.

Why is This Partnership Important?

The partnership comes as hockey continues to see sustained growth across North America, increasing demands on both professional and community facilities.

More than 23 million fans attended NHL regular‑season games this season, marking a fourth consecutive year of record attendance, while the hockey programs of the National Hockey League Players’ Association, NHL and 32 member clubs have seen record growth in participation this season.

Honeywell’s technologies “can help venue operators optimize core systems, monitor performance in real-time and turn insights into action,” according to the announcement. Platforms such as Honeywell Forge can help the NHL and facility operators improve energy efficiency, anticipate maintenance needs, protect critical systems and reduce unnecessary downtime.

This supports reliable performance across both physical infrastructure and the digital experiences fans expect.

Looking ahead, the partnership “creates a foundation for long‑term innovation across the hockey ecosystem and an opportunity to modernize building systems while protecting the data infrastructure that supports fan engagement and digital operations,” according to the joint announcement.

Honeywell and the NHL “will explore how advanced building automation, data‑driven insights and integrated energy management can enable new concepts such as a ‘Rink of the Future,’: facilities that are more efficient, connected, secure and resilient.

“By reimagining how arenas and rinks are designed and operated, the collaboration aims to shape the next generation of hockey facilities,” the joint announcement says.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Holly Borgmann, vice president of government affairs at ADT and former board member of the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC), will receive the William N. Moody Award at the Electronic Security Expo (ESX) 2026 June 2 during the SIAC reception at the Irving Convention Center.

The Moody Award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates a passion for advancing positive alarm management and best industry practices. It was established in 2004 by the SIAC board of directors to “recognize those who embody Bill Moody’s dedication to alarm management issues,” according to the ADT announcement.

The award “honors individuals who reflect attributes that include integrity, fairness, and perseverance in the face of adversity,” the announcement says.

Borgmann was also the 2025 Security Industry Association Chair’s Award winner, celebrating her leadership in furthering the association’s mission.

Why Did SIAC Chose Holly Borgmann for the Moody Award?

“During her time as a board member, Holly’s leadership, expertise and unwavering commitment to our industry made a lasting impact on alarm management and public safety policy,” says Grady Medcalf, SIAC board chairman in the announcement.

“During her service as a SIAC board member, she always helped focus our discussions with out of the box thinking and by asking tough, thoughtful questions as SIAC navigated the complex, evolving landscape of law enforcement relationships and government affairs,” he says. “Her ability to help bring stakeholders together and drive meaningful outcomes exemplifies the spirit of the Moody Award.”

Borgmann “has played a significant role in shaping public policy affecting the electronic security industry through her leadership at ADT and active involvement in key industry organizations,” according to the company announcement.

She has served in leadership roles with SIA and the Electronic Security Association (ESA), where she has been “a strong advocate for policies that support innovation, public safety and effective collaboration between the alarm industry and law enforcement.”

“Holly is widely respected across the industry for her deep understanding of legislative and regulatory challenges and her ability to translate that knowledge into effective advocacy,” says Steve Keefer, executive director of SIAC, in the announcement.

“Her contributions to SIAC have been invaluable, particularly as we address critical issues such as alarm management, police response and strengthening partnerships with public safety agencies,” he says. “She brings clarity, foresight and a collaborative approach that benefits the industry.”

“I am truly honored to receive the Moody Award,” says Borgmann in the announcement. “It has been a privilege to work alongside the dedicated SIAC team and so many other dedicated professionals across the industry to advance policies that enhance public safety and strengthen the relationship between alarm companies and law enforcement.

“I remain committed to supporting efforts that ensure our industry continues to serve and protect communities effectively,” she says.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – DroneShield is expanding urban airspace security capabilities ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 through a regional multi-site deployment “designed to support persistent low-altitude airspace awareness across the Kansas City metropolitan area,” according to a company announcement.

The initiative, led by the Kansas City Police Department in partnership with Airspace Link’s AirHub Portal and regional public safety stakeholders, “combines operational airspace coordination, distributed radar coverage, radio frequency (RF)-based drone detection and integrated situational awareness capabilities to help support security operations across multiple jurisdictions and operational environments ahead of the tournament.”

DroneShield’s role within the deployment is “as the primary detection and threat response layer, supporting multi-site airspace awareness workflows through RF sensing, sensor fusion, operational coordination and counter-UAS capabilities,” according to the company announcement.

What Will the DroneShield World Cup Deployment Do?

The deployment is “designed for complex urban environments where authorized drone operations, public safety aviation activity, media coverage and potential unauthorized drone activity may occur simultaneously,” the announcement says.

The system “supports coordinated airspace awareness and operational response across these overlapping activities throughout the broader security environment.”

“Ten years ago, most cities weren’t thinking about drone threats at this scale,” says Tom Adams, director of public safety at DroneShield and a retired FBI agent with 20 years specializing in counterterrorism and public safety, in the company announcement. “Kansas City is now helping pioneer a layered airspace security model built for the realities of modern urban environments.”

“Protecting FIFA World Cup 2026 requires a new level of airspace coordination,” says Kansas City Major Greg Williams of the Kansas City Police Department. “Kansas City is building a long-term framework that helps public safety agencies safely manage growing drone activity across the metro area.”

How Does the Kansas City Anti-Drone Deployment Work?

The deployment incorporates radar technologies from Echodyne alongside DroneShield’s detection and operational awareness capabilities, creating a layered airspace security architecture “intended to support persistent visibility across the broader operational environment,” according to the DroneShield announcement.

Together, the participating organizations “are helping establish a coordinated operational framework designed to support airspace awareness, drone detection, authorized drone operations and public safety response activities ahead of one of the world’s largest sporting events,” the announcement says.

Kansas City’s approach “emphasizes persistent regional airspace awareness across multiple operational areas and jurisdictions, reinforcing the growing need for scalable urban airspace resilience strategies capable of supporting both major event security and long-term public safety operations,” according to the announcement.

“Maintaining visibility across complex urban airspace environments requires persistent awareness and layered sensing capabilities that can support dynamic operational conditions,” says Eben Frankenberg, CEO at Echodyne, in the announcement.

“Kansas City represents an important example of how public safety agencies and technology partners are working together to support scalable, multi-site airspace security operations ahead of major public events,” he says

“What Kansas City is building is larger than a World Cup security deployment,” says Michael Healander, co-founder, president and CEO of Airspace Link, in the announcement. “This is foundational infrastructure for the future of coordinated urban drone operation.”

Blackleaf Solutions helps security service providers modernize and automate their supply chain operations

Sharlic helps integrators simplify and automate recurring revenue and service management workflows

WESTMINSTER, Colo. – The PSA Network (PSA), the global consortium of professional systems integrators, today announced Blackleaf Solutions and Sharlic as its newest business solutions providers.

Blackleaf Solutions, through its Blackleaf Connect platform, “helps security service providers modernize and automate their supply chain operations,” according to the PSA announcement.

By integrating distributors, procurement workflows, inventory systems and service delivery into a unified, API-driven framework, Blackleaf Connect “reduces manual overhead, improves order accuracy and accelerates project execution,” the announcement says.

This partnership “empowers PSA integrators with greater visibility, efficiency and control across their entire supply chain lifecycle.”

“Partnering with PSA allows us to bring a new level of efficiency and automation to the security industry’s supply chain,” said Francis Kamp, CEO of Blackleaf Solutions. “With Blackleaf Connect, we’re helping PSA dealers streamline procurement, reduce manual processes and gain real-time visibility from ordering through project delivery—ultimately enabling faster deployments and stronger business outcomes.”

Similarly, Sharlic “helps integrators simplify and automate recurring revenue and service management workflows,” according to the PSA announcement.

Sharlic is a service delivery management platform that “gives integrators one centralized place to manage all their RMR and recurring services,” the announcement says. “By transforming reactive processes into proactive workflows, Sharlic ensures nothing expires without visibility and nothing gets billed late.”

For PSA members managing multiple vendors and growing RMR portfolios, the platform “integrates alongside existing systems to simplify and automate renewal management,” according to the PSA announcement.

What Do Blackleaf Solutions and Sharlic Bring to PSA?

“Blackleaf Solutions and Sharlic each bring innovative solutions that address critical operational challenges for our members,” says Brittany Board, director of technology partners for the PSA Network, in the announcement.

“From streamlining supply chain processes to simplifying service and renewal management, these partnerships provide our integrators with powerful tools to operate more efficiently and scale their businesses with confidence,” she says

“PSA members are running some of the most sophisticated integration businesses in North America but many are still managing recurring services through spreadsheets and reactive processes,” says Karl Hill, CEO of Sharlic, in the PSA announcement.

“That’s the problem Sharlic exists to solve and we’re proud to bring it to the PSA network,” he says. “The channel has the relationships and the expertise, we simply take some of the administrative heavy lifting off their plate.”

NSCA launches a new, free Economic Outlook Report, replacing the Electronic Systems Outlook.

The report was developed with economist Dr. Chris Kuehl and Armada Corporate Intelligence.

The new Economic Outlook Report covers macroeconomic trends, construction forecasts, vertical market outlooks and key risks impacting integrators.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The National Systems Contractors Association (NSCA) recently announced a new members-only report that offers economic insights for integrators, developed in partnership with economist Dr. Chris Kuehl and his firm, Armada Corporate Intelligence.

This new resource replaces NSCA’s long-running Electronic Systems Outlook report and is designed to give integrators clearer visibility into construction activity, sector trends and the macroeconomic forces shaping their businesses, according to the association announcement.

Available exclusively to NSCA members, the report brings together economic, construction and sector-level intelligence in one resource, providing context to help integrators anticipate and plan for the future.

What Does the New NSCA Economic Outlook Report Cover?

The new Economic Outlook report covers:

A macroeconomic outlook: GDP expectations, disposable income trends, inflation, and interest rate/10-Year U.S. Treasury outlooks, with commentary on how these factors influence technology and construction spending

Construction forecasts: national and regional forecasts for nonresidential and residential construction, including trajectory, timing, and intensity of growth or softening

Vertical market insights: sector-specific outlooks for key markets that drive demand for technology, including healthcare, education, manufacturing, and data centers

Risks, constraints and catalysts: analysis of labor dynamics, tariffs and trade policy, regulation, and supply chain conditions that impact project timelines, pricing, and scopes

Three-year outlook indicators: data that shows whether specific verticals are expected to grow, stall, or contract so integrators can prioritize markets and territories

“By teaming with Dr. Kuehl and Armada Corporate Intelligence to deliver an outlook tailored to our industry, we’re giving integrators a better line of sight into demand drivers, risks, and opportunities so they can plan with more confidence,” says NSCA Executive Director Tom LeBlanc. “This new report translates macroeconomic data into practical intelligence that decision-makers in this industry can use.”

How Do You Access NSCA’s Economic Outlook Report?

NSCA members can access the new report at no cost through NSCA’s website.

What to Know About the 2026 Integration Awards:

Early bird deadline: June 25, 2026

Regular deadline: July 31, 2026

New categories: Best AI-Infused Project, Best Broadcast AV Project and Best Electronic Security Project

Who should enter: Integrators with standout commercial projects completed in the past 12 months

What winners get: Live onstage recognition, editorial exposure, marketing support, a trophy and winner logo rights

The 2026 Commercial Integrator Integration Awards are now open and this is the time for integrators to put their best work forward. Each year, the program by SSI’s sister publication recognizes standout installations that solve real customer challenges and raise the bar for commercial integration.

If your firm delivered a project that blended performance, creativity and measurable impact, this is your chance to earn industry recognition for it.

Why should security integrators enter the 2026 Integration Awards?

Integrators should enter the 2026 Integration Awards because the program recognizes the kind of project work that builds credibility with clients, partners and future hires. These awards honor problem-solving installations across major verticals including corporate, higher education, hospitality, houses of worship, retail and more.

For many firms, an award win does more than celebrate a single project. It helps validate the quality of your team’s thinking, execution and customer service. It also gives you a stronger story to tell in new business conversations, on your website and across your marketing.

What kinds of projects are eligible for the 2026 Integration Awards?

The 2026 Integration Awards are looking for commercial integration projects that stand out for innovation, execution and results. That includes traditional AV systems as well as fast-growing areas including broadcast AV, AI-powered solutions and electronic security deployments.

Commercial Integrator is looking for projects that meet customer needs in smart, practical ways. The strongest entries will show clear goals, meaningful challenges, thoughtful design decisions and outcomes that made a difference for the client.

What are the new categories for 2026?

The new categories for 2026 are Best AI-Infused Project, Best Broadcast AV Project and Best Electronic Security Project. These additions reflect where the market is moving and where integrators are creating real value for customers.

Best AI-Infused Project recognizes installations where AI played a meaningful role in the outcome. That could include AI-driven camera framing, searchable surveillance workflows or other practical uses of AI that improved performance, usability or efficiency.

Best Broadcast AV Project celebrates studio and production environments that help organizations create and deliver content at a higher level. This category is especially timely as corporations, schools and other organizations invest more in in-house production and broadcast-quality experiences.

Best Electronic Security Project honors security-focused work including video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection and alarm deployments. If your team helped a client improve safety, protect property or modernize security operations, this category is built for that work.

Why does entering the Integration Awards matter for your firm?

Entering the Integration Awards matters because recognition can extend the value of a project long after installation is complete. A strong award-winning project can help your firm stand out in a crowded market and show prospective clients what your team is capable of delivering.

Winning can also strengthen recruiting and retention efforts. Great integrators want to work for firms that do excellent work and get noticed for it. When your team earns public recognition, it reinforces your reputation as a company that solves hard problems and delivers results.

What do winners receive?

Winners receive public recognition, promotional support and tools they can use to market their achievement. Commercial Integrator plans to announce winners live onstage at CEDIA Expo/Commercial Integrator Expo.

Winners may also receive:

Coverage consideration on CommercialIntegrator.com

Multi-media exposure on CommercialIntegrator.com

Promotion to more than 16,000 newsletter readers

Visibility to more than 55,000 unique users through CommercialIntegrator.com

A 2026 Commercial Integrator Integration Awards trophy

The right to use the 2026 winner’s logo on a company website and in email signatures

That combination of visibility and credibility can turn a great project into a long-term business asset.

When are the submission deadlines?

The early bird deadline is June 25, 2026, and the regular deadline is July 31, 2026. Firms that want to put their best foot forward should start organizing materials now so they have time to build a strong entry.

Submitting early can also make the process easier on your team. If you already have a standout project from the past 12 months, now is the right time to package the story, gather visuals and complete your application.

What do you need to submit an entry?

You need a clear project summary, client-related permissions and supporting materials to submit an entry. Commercial Integrator asks entrants to provide the core details needed to evaluate the work fairly and completely.

Here is what you need:

Name of the company that performed the integration

Project overview including initial contact, overall scope, unique features, challenges and creative solutions, with a 900-word maximum

Client reaction, with a 300-word maximum

Equipment list

Up to 10 high-resolution .jpg or .jpeg images at 300 dpi, with at least one image required

Client’s permission

Permission to name the customer

Permission for Emerald to publish

A complete and well-organized entry gives judges a much better view of the thinking and execution behind your project.

How can firms build a stronger submission?

Firms can build a stronger submission by focusing on the problem, the solution and the outcome in clear terms. Judges want to understand what the client needed, what made the project complex and how your team delivered results.

Use your overview to explain what set the project apart. Be specific about technical hurdles, user needs, creative choices and measurable impact. Strong visuals also matter. Good project photos can help bring the installation to life and show the quality of the finished work.

Why is now the right time to enter?

Now is the right time to enter because the 2026 program is open and your best recent projects are still fresh. If your team has completed an installation that deserves wider recognition, waiting only makes the submission process harder.

The Commercial Integrator Integration Awards remain one of the clearest ways for firms to showcase excellence in commercial AV and adjacent markets. If your company delivered standout AV, broadcast AV, AI-infused or electronic security work over the last year, this is your opportunity to show the industry what you built and why it matters.

Make your best work count. Start your entry now and put your firm in the running before the early bird deadline on June 25, 2026, or the regular deadline on July 31, 2026.

The post NFPA: U.S. Grilling Fires Peak During Warmer Months appeared first on Security Sales & Integration.

QUINCY, Mass. – Often considered the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day kicks off a season of outdoor grilling and entertaining. But with the increase in grilling comes more home grilling fires.

In fact, the latest data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows that July is the peak month for home grilling fires, followed by June, May and August.

“Outdoor grilling is a popular way to cook during the warmer months, but it does present the risk of fire and burns,” says Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA, in the association announcement. “We want to help ensure that the grilling season remains a safe one for everybody.”

How Many Home Grilling Fires Have Happened Recently?

Between 2020 and 2024, U.S. fire departments responded to an annual average of 12,141 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues, including 6,110 structure fires and 6,031 outside or unclassified fires. These fires caused 15 civilian deaths, 171 reported civilian injuries and $241 million in direct property damage; almost all the losses resulted from the structure fires.

Gas grills dominate the grilling fire problem:

Seventy-six percent of home grilling fires involved grills fueled by gas while 13 percent used charcoal or other solid fuel.

Gas grills were involved in an annual average of 9,235 home fires per year, including 4,662 structure fires and 4,573 outdoor fires.

Six percent of gas grill structure fires and 13 percent of outside gas grill fires were caused by leaks or breaks.

Charcoal or other solid-fueled grills were involved in an average of 1,610 home fires per year, including 773 structure fires, and 837 outside fires.

Keeping grills clean is an important element of grilling safety. One-fifth (20 percent) of grilling fires were caused by grills that had not been cleaned, representing the leading contributing factor to ignition.

In addition, approximately one-quarter of the home structure fires involving grills started on an exterior balcony or open porch. In eight percent of these fires, the item first ignited was an outside wall; in another three percent, a structural member or framing was the item first ignited. These statistics reinforce the importance of keeping grills well away from anything that can burn.

“Knowing when and where grilling fires tend to happen helps people better understand where risks exist and how to reduce their likelihood,” says Carli in the NFPA announcement.

What Does NFPA Recommend for Grilling Fire Safety?

Following are NFPA tips, recommendations and resources for using outdoor grills safely:

For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks.

Keep your grill clean. Make sure to remove all grease and fat buildup from the grills and the trays below.

Place the grill far from your home, deck railings, eaves, or overhanging branches.

Before lighting your gas-powered grill, always make sure the lid is open.

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

If you use starter fluid with charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire once it’s been lit. When you finish grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing them in a metal container.

Never leave your grill unattended when in use.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer, gas prices continue to surge as the United States’ involvement in conflict with Iran and Israel nears its third full month. Our Surveillance Videos of the Week features President Trump urging Americans to be patient, promising the pain at the pump is temporary.

We also have surveillance video of a gunman walking along a busy Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Mass., a former DoorDash driver being indicted after she allegedly posted photos of a naked customer on her TikTok account and a McDonald’s employee catching heat for allegedly putting French fries in her mouth before serving them to a customer.

We also revisit the Japan zoo that’s home to Punch the Monkey, who became a viral sensation when he befriended a stuffed animal, choosing the inanimate object over the other real monkey in the enclosure with him. Now, it seems a couple of people decided they’d try to join Punch in his enclosure. Guess how that went?

IRVING, Texas – The Electronic Security Association (ESA) today announces Michael Barnes as the recipient of the 2026 Sara E. Jackson Award, one of the association’s highest honors recognizing “extraordinary leadership, service and dedication to the electronic security and life safety industry.”

Barnes will be formally recognized during the ESX 2026 keynote luncheon, scheduled for June 2 in Irving, Texas.

Named in honor of former ESA president Sara E. Jackson, the award is presented annually to an ESA member who has demonstrated “exceptional commitment through service on ESA committees, task forces, or boards while helping advance the industry and the association,” according to the association announcement.

Barnes is the founding partner of Barnes Associates, an investment banking and consulting firm specializing in the security alarm industry. He has spent decades advising security companies on acquisitions, capital formation, strategic planning, and operational performance.

Since launching Barnes Associates in 1986, the firm has participated in more than 285 transactions with an aggregate value exceeding $30 billion. Barnes also pioneered several industry benchmarking initiatives that continue to provide valuable financial and operational insight for security companies nationwide. In 1995, he co-founded the annual Barnes-Buchanan Conference alongside the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll, creating a forum where capital providers and security alarm companies could collaborate on industry growth and value creation.

How Did Barnes Earn the ESA Sara E. Jackson Award?

Barnes’ involvement with ESA dates back more than four decades. In 1984, while working with Potter Electric Signal Company, he was elected to the board of directors of the Security Industry Association (SIA), which at the time held a representative seat on the board of directors of the NBFAA, the organization now known as ESA.

“I was new to the industry and it was through this involvement that I learned about how the industry was structured and its common challenges,” says Barnes in the ESA announcement. “It also was a great platform for meeting and interacting with industry leaders.”

He continued his involvement with NBFAA and ESA after founding Barnes Associates, serving on numerous committees focused on industry growth, performance and financial issues. In 2022, Barnes joined the ESA board of directors as a competency director.

“ESA is such a great organization and voice for the industry and I am pleased to have contributed to its success,” says Barnes in the association announcement. “To receive this important award means the world to me.”

More About This Year’s Sara E. Jackson Award Winner

ESA chief executive officer Merlin Guilbeau praises Barnes for his longstanding commitment to the industry and the association.

“Michael Barnes exemplifies the spirit of ESA and the legacy of Sara Jackson,” says Guilbeau in the ESA announcement. “His unwavering commitment to service, leadership and advancing our industry has made a lasting impact on both ESA and the professionals we represent. Michael’s passion for giving back and elevating others sets a standard we can all aspire to and we are proud to recognize him as our 2026 honoree.”

ESA outgoing chairman Kevin Stone also reflects on Barnes’ impact and leadership.

“I am thrilled that Michael Barnes has been named the recipient of the 2026 Sara E. Jackson Award,” says Stone in the ESA announcement. “Michael’s deep industry knowledge and unwavering leadership on the ESA board and finance committee have been vital to our mission and success. His dedication perfectly mirrors the legacy of resilience and service established by Sara E. Jackson herself.”
