What are their likes?

Before buying jewelry at a store or online, you must know the wearer's style and preferences. They may want everyday or special occasion pieces. Knowing the wearer's preferences makes choosing much easier.

When buying someone's jewelry, consider:

Colors

Gold? If so, white gold or yellow gold, or perhaps rose gold? Silver, too. Jewelry should be one color, however rules can be bent! Gold is warmer and yellow-like on the color wheel. Rings:

Men usually wear wedding rings. However, pinky rings and signet rings are not uncommon. There are more ‘rules’ around rings than other pieces of jewelry in terms of what they symbolize, how many should be worn at once, and on which finger.

Bracelets and necklaces:

Many heavy link chains and bracelets have become synonymous with wealth. Look for ones made of semi-precious stones, such as tiger’s eye or onyx or lapis lazuli, or even a cuban link chain. You could also look for ones made of other materials such as leather or beads, and perhaps even check out magnetic bracelets for men. There are said to all sorts of medical benefits from jewellery with magnetic properties, and while there is no medical or scientific evidence that supports this conclusively, there is lots of anecdotal feedback stating improvements to health. Is There A Beauty Industry Equivalent To Refashioning?

Regular readers will be aware that refashioning is a passion of this blog. The art of taking your old clothes and reworking them to be worn again differently is so important. It allows you to keep using and wearing the same pieces over and over again, solving many of the problems with fast fashion. You no longer go out and purchase new clothing all the time, reducing the resources used to manufacture clothes. If everyone refashioned - and clothes companies made items that could be worn for a long time - the ecological impact of the fashion industry would be much smaller than it is.

Of course, the fashion industry isn’t the only place where there are problems. You can look at the beauty industry as another example of where this “fast” lifestyle is taking over. Fast beauty is when there are countless new and trending beauty products made all the time and pumped out. There’s always something new and exciting you have to get, prompting you to consume more and more. Needless to say, this has a negative impact on the environment because of all the resources used within the industry.

That brings us to today’s topic:

Is there a beauty equivalent to refashioning?

Well…there is and there isn’t. Unlike clothes, you can’t take makeup and turn it into something new to use. Makeup also has a shelf-life, so it goes bad when it hasn’t been used for a long time. You also wouldn’t be able to take lipstick and refashion it as eyeliner, much like you could take a dress and refashion it as a small top and skirt.

However, you can upcycle in the beauty industry, though mainly from a packaging perspective. Old bottles and tubs can be upcycled and turned into storage containers or small plant pots. So, there is an element of refashioning, but it’s only regarding the beauty product’s packaging.

What can be done to combat fast beauty?

Aside from upcycling your makeup packaging, there are a few other things you can do to combat fast beauty. One idea is to look for products that are built to last. When online shopping, pick products from trusted brands that work well for you. Don’t get cheap items that will only last for a few weeks before needing to be replaced. Also, don’t get cheap things that simply won’t do as expected. A cheap moisturizer is unlikely to provide the benefits of an expensive one because it won’t have the active ingredients. So, you’d end up buying loads of other products to try and get the same effect, which uses way more resources than if you invested in the expensive product, to begin with.

Another new idea is to find brands that use upcycled cosmetic ingredients. Effectively, they take things that would usually be put to waste but use them to make products. It’s a far more sustainable method than most beauty brands are currently using.

Furthermore, choosing brands that cut down on packaging can also be useful. There is simply too much packaging waste in the beauty industry, and this needs to change. Thankfully, many top brands are changing, realizing that the fate of the planet is more important than brand image and marketing!

Lastly, the main thing you can do is attempt to not get sucked into trends. It is hard when you see countless influencers using the latest products, claiming they’re God’s gift to mankind. You want to buy them, try them out, and see how they look. But, you quickly get sucked into the whole ethos of fast beauty - you keep on buying new products whenever they come out. Instead, make a list of products you actually need. In most cases, all you need for a skincare routine is as follows:

Cleanser
Moisturizer
Serum
Exfoliator

That’s it; anything else is overkill! For makeup, you only really need:

Primer
Foundation
Eyeshadow
Eyeliner
Concealer

You could add other things to the list for days when you want to go all out, but this is basically all that’s required. What’s more, you only need one of each product. I think THAT is the main problem with fast beauty. People will have three foundations, four different cleansers, and an exfoliator for each day of the week - it’s madness.

Refashioning is the solution to fast fashion, but the main solution to fast beauty is to just be more aware of what you’re buying. Purchase things that last for a long time and won’t need to be re-bought again and again. Stop following trends all the time and select a handful of things that you will use every day.

Easy DIY: Denim Patch Skirt Refashion

The month of May was really busy and I felt like it just flew on by. This was one of the best Mays and I wish it would've lasted a little longer. Some of my highlights were...

1. Getting my driver's license.

2. Celebrated my 25th birthday with a rose gold & sparkly party.

3. Spent a great week in the Bay Area with my hubby.

Since I was having so much fun, I let my sewing machine take a little break. But now, we're back at it! I decided to ease back into sewing with an easy DIY. I love patches because of how easy it is to customize something to your own liking.

It would be a good idea to try creating custom patches online. You can add your preferred patterns and texts to this product. And you will be amazed by their beautiful embroidery work.

Here is how easy it was to refashion this denim skirt.

Oh and... yes, I cut my hair! I felt I needed a change and I just went for it. I haven't had short hair in years, but so far I am loving it. :)

STEPS:

1. I laid out the patches how I wanted them on the skirt.

2. I ironed them on.

3. The part that took the longest was sewing on with my sewing machine.

Fast fashion has made it quick and easy to pack out your wardrobe with more choices than you’re ever going to need. But the truth is, it is making most of use waste time just trying to choose an outfit for a coffee on a Saturday afternoon. The fact is, that having too much stuff, means we end up having too much choice. Having too much choice means that we end up unable to choose at all - or taking far too long to do so.

Here are a few things that you can never go wrong by having.

Ankle boot. These work with dresses, ankle-grazing jeans, suits and so much more. Perfect for people who love no ideal fuss-free shoe. The Chelsea boot is perfect.

White trainers. They look slick with pretty much any outfit and don’t have to cost too much to get a great pair.

There is a lot to choose from as well as a massive variation in the quality. So try a few pairs before deciding on your go-to cut of jeans.

Ballet pump flats in nude and black. The nude pumps elongate your leg and work with everything that black doesn’t work with. They work with dressed up or casual and are very comfortable when you’ve worn them a couple of times.

T-shirts. Basic cotton t-shirts in a range of colours will see you through summer, and help you with layers in the winter. They work with jeans, leggings, skirts and under pinafore style dresses. Have around 4-5 in different cuts and colours.

Sets of jewellery - three in fact. One pricey one that gets pulled out for special occasions, one bright and bold costume jewellery when you want to spice up an outfit and finally some lighter more delicate jewellery to add a touch of class to your outfit.

Once you get rid of the things that you don’t wear in your wardrobe, you can concentrate on filling it with things you wear. Taking away the hours of choosing an outfit and replacing it with minutes - because everything works together, there will be no lousy outfit days.

Fast fashion has a lot to answer for all over the world. April Style Diary

I'm back to uploading my monthly style diaries, because the little Style Diary section of my blog was getting lonely. And besides, what kind of a modest fashion blog doesn't feature modest outfits? Here are my favorite outfits from April. You can see how the weather progressed since I started off with a rainy outfit and ended the month with a floral spring dress. This month I also tried new things with my hair, since I always either have it wavy-ish or straight. When it comes to hairstyles, I never know what to do with my hair so I always keep it down. It's never too late to start trying new things, right? :)

This was my take on a "rainy day in spring" outfit. A floral sweater is a must for Spring days and I paired it with some boots. I think this is the last time I wore boots, which makes me a bit sad since I love boots, but I'm excited for warmer weather!

This is my random denim jacket that I decided to decorate with patches and pins that represent me and my personality. Let me tell you, it was the biggest pain ever sewing these patches by hand, especially the ones on the sleeve. I paired it with a soft tulle tunic and a denim skirt. I was going for "feminine + street style."

This was my outfit for my sister-in-law's unicorn birthday party. I wore my unicorn ruffle blouse that I sewed last year for my unicorn birthday. Unicorns pair well with sparkles, so I wore my sparkliest shoes.

This was my Easter outfit. I actually added the white lace to front of this blouse, since the v-neck was a little deep and wide. It paired well with my $2 dollar skirt from Charlotte Russe (I got it when the stores were closing!).

Last but not least, this is one of my favorite dresses. The pattern and the silhouette are just so sweet.

How to Add Long Sleeves to Sleeveless Tops & Dresses

I was really aiming to post this in March, and I even took these pictures then, but here we are at the end of April. It is really hot now where I live (dry Central Valley in CA), so I can't wear this dress anymore, unless I go to the Bay Area or someplace cooler. Crazy how time flies by, and also crazy how badly I manage my time, eek! Anyway, I made a tutorial last year on how to add short sleeves to a sleeveless top or dress, so I decided to make a tutorial for long sleeves as well. It's the same method, just requires a bit more fabric for the long sleeves.

I used this blouse that I wore on Thanksgiving 2 years ago. I hadn't worn it since then, so I decided to give it a makeover and make a garment that I would wear more often. While I was looking for ideas, I came across floral dresses on Pinterest, and I remembered this lonely little blouse just sitting in my closet. I decided it was a perfect garment that I could refashion for myself AND make a long sleeve tutorial. I love dresses, because: 1. It's easy to make an outfit (just pop it on and go!) and 2. Cute & comfy! (This dress is made from Double Brushed Poly, so it's extra comfy!)

As I mentioned in my short sleeve tutorial, this is not a pattern drafting technique or anything fancy. Drafting sleeves is tricky. This is just a method I use to add sleeves to sleeveless garments for a little bit more modesty, or to change up the look of a garment (like I did with this floral dress).

STEPS:

1. Fold your fabric over and lay your sleeveless garment on top of it, at an angle, as shown below.

(You can make a pattern first with paper or muslin, but I like to trace directly onto fabric. If this is your first time, try tracing on paper or muslin and then cut out from your fabric)

2. Trace your sleeve (shown in pink) and when you get towards the end, lift up the edge a bit (shown in light blue).

3. Making a long sleeve can get a little tricky, so I like to use a long sleeve top to guide the rest of the sleeve, after tracing the armhole.
After tracing, add 1/4" - 1/2" seam allowance all around (armhole, inside seam, and hem), except on the fold.

Here is how my sleeve looked like:

(Sometimes I use tailor's chalk & other times I use pins to trace my sleeve)

4. Cut out your sleeves, remembering to add 1/4" - 1/2" seam allowance all around (armhole, inside seam, and hem)

(The pink line is what I traced earlier and then I added seam allowance around. I like to add a little more seam allowance at the sleeve opening)

5. Sew your sleeves closed.

6. Turn your sleeve right-side out and your sleeveless garment inside-out.

7. Place your sleeve inside your garment, as shown below.

8. Match the shoulder points and the armpit points, pin, and sew all around the armhole.

The last step is to hem your sleeves.

To make the rest of this dress, I sewed a big rectangle, gathered it, and sewed it to the bodice. Then, I just sewed a piece of skinny elastic on the seam.

Prom Dress Fail and Outdated Blouse Refashion

This was a really fun refashion. I was originally only going to refashion the prom dress, but decided to also refashion the blouse.

The prom dress was given to me by my cousin who ended up with a "prom dress fail" and let me use it for a refashion. (Thank you!!!) She gave it to me Christmas 2016, so I thought it was about time that I finally refashioned it.

So the dress, the bust area just had two circles, the puffy sleeves fit weird, and there was a white tulle material under the lace that was itchy. As for the blouse (Thred-Up), I bought it thinking I would just wear it tucked into my new refashioned skirt, but when I tried it on, I didn't like how it fit me. It had an outdated fit.The sleeves were too puffy and long and the blouse itself was too long.

This refashion took me a while longer, but it was really fun seeing the look come together.

THE DRESS

Here's how I refashioned the dress:

1. I cut off the top part of the dress.

(Still thinking of what to make with it, with refashioning, the possibilities are endless!)

2. I cut out the lining in the dress to use as a lining for my new skirt.

3. I traced out the front and back skirt pieces, using an existing pencil skirt. (The back panel is open for the zipper)

This is what the pieces looked like:

I sewed the side seams and left one open seam, the back for the zipper.

4. The lining of the dress had a "lining," which I kept to keep all the seams clean.

5. Next, I took off the itchy white tulle that was attached to the black lace.

6. I created three tiers from the black lace and sewed a gathering stitch across all of them. I then gathered all three tiers to fit the lining. I also hemmed all three tiers at this point.

The tiers by size:

Top tier: 8" x 74"

Middle tier: 15 1/2" x 74"

Bottom tier: 22 1/2" x 74"

7. I put together all the tiers and sewed a basting stitch across to keep all the layers together.

8. I used the sash from the dress to make a waistband. I ironed on interfacing on the "right side" of the waistband. (This is the side that you can see when the skirt is finished)

9. I sewed the waistband piece with the interfacing onto the lace layer pieces, as shown below.

10. I sewed the other waistband piece to the lining, right sides together, so wrong sides visible on the same side.

11. I buy zippers in bulk, so I trimmed it and sewed a tack in place (illustrated by the pink line).

12. I sewed the zipper on the left side first, as shown below.

13. Next, I sewed it on the right side.

14. I serged the open seams of the lining.

15. I placed the lining on top of the main skirt, right sides facing together. I sewed as close as possible to the zipper.

16. Next, I sewed all around the waistband, as shown by the pink dots.

17. Snipped off those corners.!

18. I sewed the main part of the skirt closed, as close as I could to the zipper.

19. Then, I sewed the lining closed, as close to the zipper as I could. After, I just turned the skirt inside out, with the lining inside!

THE BLOUSE

Next, the blouse. This is what I did to it:

1. I cut off a chunk from the bottom. I wanted it to be crop length. I saved the fabric to make my sleeves in Step 4.

2. Using a seam ripper, I took off the armhole binding.

(I thought I would use it later, but it ended up being too small. Oh well, now I have binding for other future armholes!)

3. Next, I completely removed the sleeves.

4. I cut out these half circles from the main fabric and lining fabric, using the measurement of the entire armhole as my radius.

5. With the lining fabric and main fabric facing right sides together, I sewed all around the half circle, except on the circular opening.

6. I turned that inside out and pressed.

7. I pinned and sewed the sleeve to the armhole.

When sewing the little edge of the circle sleeve, just sew as close as possible to it. I used binding to give finish my armhole, so this little edge got hidden in there. :)

In what feels like the blink of an eye, 2018 has come and gone. We are almost in the 20's! When I was younger I was always curious as to how we would refer the 20's, 30's, etc. Will we call it 2020's, 2030's, etc? It won't be too long before we find out. (eek!) Anyways, today I am sharing 5 outfit planning tips with you. January is the month that I like to plan out the year and list what I would like to do throughout the year. How cute is the little face! I will be featuring parts of my new planner throughout this post.

1. Start With Important Events

I like to grab my planner and mark all of the "important" dates, such as holidays, birthdays, etc. At the start of every month, I think of any particular garments that I really want to wear that month. For example, in December, I really like to wear sparkly and festive outfits. (And my Christmas attire!)

For the month of January, I don't much going on. Even if I don't have much going on for the month, I start off with Sundays in my planner, since I always go to church.

2. Move On To Smaller Events

After taking note of important events, I place my focus on smaller events. This where errands, appointments, and other miscellaneous random trips fall under. I don't always know of all these events ahead of time, so I just plan outfits and leave them there for future use. That way when I have to go run a small errand, I have an outfit ready to go and I can avoid going out in my pajamas.

3. Loungewear & PJ's

Speaking of pj's, I like to plan out my comfy outfits as well since I spend the majority of my time in them. I work from home so I make it a habit to wear nice and cute pj's. (I used to wear my old ratty ones, hehe) This is actually a very fun part of outfit planning, since I live in my loungewear and pj's. I'm at home about 90% of the time, so I have to make it fun somehow, right?

Even if you don't spend most of your time at home, it's fun thinking of what you're going to wear after a long day of work. I remember being in school and wanting to just change into my pj's, watch my cartoons, and eat endless snacks. (I mean that's pretty much my life now, except now I don't have to change out of my pj's, LOL!)

4. Check The Weather

Imagine wearing your favorite flowy circle skirt, and suddenly it is as windy as can be outside. (Hint: it's not fun!) This happened to me a lot when I was in college in San Francisco. I made the mistake of wearing all of my flowy skirts on days that were really windy and it was not fun walking through the city like that. When I check the weather, I always check for rain, wind, and extreme heat or cold. Also, I like to check the weather to have an idea of what I can or can't wear that month. For example I can still wear my sweaters in January and February, sometimes March, and I can maybe get away with wearing a sweater once during a cold April morning.

5. Plan According To The Occasion & Environment

This seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes it's easy to forget a certain aspect of the environment you are going into, or sometimes we simply don't know. The first time I went camping, I did not know what to expect. I am also not the biggest outdoorsy person out there, so there's that as well, hehe. During the night, I was really cold because I did not take enough warm clothing. (It was summer and I wrongfully assumed it would not get ridiculously cold) Now, I'm fully prepared and sleep cozy and warm in my winter fleece pj's. Another time that planning ahead worked, was when I attended a wedding and I was going to wear heels. For some reason I did not realize that there was a possibility that the entire wedding was going to take place outdoors on a beautiful lawn. Thankfully the thought crossed my mind at the last minute, so I opted for a wedge bootie instead. Turns out the entire wedding was taking place at a beautiful event center outdoors, with guess what, a lawn.

Making The Most Out Of Winter Fashion

Winter fashion is well in force, and with the colder weather, we can often feel at a loss when it comes to trying to be stylish. For me personally, the cold weather makes me feel lazy and I just want to live in fleece pajamas. :) I live in California, so it doesn't even get TOO cold (as in other states), but I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather.

Winter gives you so many opportunities to wear not only warm clothing, but also clothing that looks stylish. There are even styles that can only be worn in winter, such as comfy scarves and sweaters. Come rain or shine, you can look stylish this season, and so here are some of the ways that you can make the most out of it.

Hats and Scarves

A hat and a scarf should be considered two of winters staples when it comes to fashion and style, and they can really add a pop of interest to your outfit. Personally, hats and scarves are two of my favorite accessories. From chunky knit beanies to scarves, there really is a lot to choose from. Living in California, there are only a few winter days that I can really wear beanies and scarves, so I definitely make the most of those days! :)

Comfy Sweaters

On the subject of chunky knits, this is the season to embrace all sweater styles. During winter, the chunkier and oversized the better! It is just something that works so well at this time of year. Plus, sweaters are so easy to style. Simply pick out your favorite and pair with some skinny jeans or skirts/legging combo, and boots. You can choose something neutral and understated, or be bright and bold with colors.

Layering

Winter can often throw you a curveball with weather every now and again. One day you will find it starts off cold and gets sunnier with a hint of warmth in the air as the day goes on. Other days start off raining and end up with some sun. This is when adding layers to your outfit can help you out. Not only is it practical, but it also looks very stylish! I seriously love layering. :)

Boots

It is the season to embrace all of the boots. This is one of my favorite things about fall and winter. Personally I love boots of all kinds, but especially for winter I like to wear my Bearpaw and UGG boots, since it is too warm the rest of the year to wear them. I love these two pairs since they each have a dainty and feminine detail added to them. The Bearpaws have that adorable pom pom and the UGGs have those cute little pink ribbons!

Skirts And Dresses

Finally, you may think that winter means you need to wear pants and leggings all the time. This is a great style to go with, but it's definitely not your only option. You can still rock the dress and the skirt at this time of year, and it can look cute! I paired a favorite spring tulle skirt with a sweater and some ankle booties for a winter Sunday morning. Don’t feel confined to wearing one style this season, you really can wear what you like, be warm, and still look cute.

DIY Ruffle Wrap Skirt Sewing Tutorial

This outfit was actually my Thanksgiving outfit, but I'm barely just posting the sewing tutorial for this skirt. That's life, right? November and December always go by way too fast, probably because of all of the end of the year festivities. (Christmas is in a week!)

I actually made this skirt the night before Thanksgiving, so I didn't take any photos since it was dark. I made another one and took photos of the process. The first time I made a wrap skirt was when I made my Anchor Print Wrap Skirt using a pattern. I didn't want to use a pattern this time, mostly because I had one night to make it hehe. I did some quick research online and played around with the fabric and ended up making this wrap skirt with no pattern.

THE FABRIC

This gorgeous crushed velvet is from Mily Mae Fabrics. I seriously get all of my velvet from Amanda's shop. Not only is the selection beautiful, but also affordably priced. This is listed as "nude," but it has a pinkish tone to it, which I absolutely love. Also, the weight is nice for skirts, since it is not super thin that I would have to wear a slip underneath.

THE OUTFIT

I linked some options for my outfit below. I couldn't find my top in the same color since I found mine at TJ Maxx. I literally walked into the store and immediately saw it. I don't normally go for brighter colors, but this one was too cute to pass up! I got my hat at Amazon, but I linked the one I was planning on getting from Forever 21. I just got mine on Amazon, because I was feeling impatient and it was a Prime item. :)

STEPS:

1. First, you're going to cut all your pieces. Fold your fabric in half. To make this skirt, you are going to be cutting out a half circle and a half. (Because you need an overlap since it is a wrap skirt). This means your waist radius (the pink line) will be calculated like this:

WAIST MEASUREMENT + 1/2 WAIST MEASUREMENT.

Mine was 26" + 13" = 39"

For the RUFFLE piece, you probably won't get a continuous piece cut out, since it'll be long. You can divide it and cut it in multiple pieces. Use the measurement from STEP 5 and add 50". You can add more, depending on how ruffle-y (technical sewing language, hehe) you want your piece. The length is up to you. I cut my ruffle piece 6".

For the WAISTBAND piece, subtract one inch from your waist measurement. The width of the waistband is up to you, and will depend on the width of your elastic. I cut mine 2 1/2" wide, since my elastic was 3/4" wide. When I use 1" elastic, I cut my waistband 3" wide.

For the ELASTIC, I cut it 2" - 4" shorter than my waist measurement, depending on how stretchy my elastic is. This time around I subtracted 4", so my elastic piece was 22", because my elastic was very stretchy.

THE SKIRT

For now, let's focus on the skirt piece.

This is how it looks like when your skirt piece is cut out and folded in half:

2. Now, put your arrange your skirt so that there is a piece of overlap in the front.

3. Next, draw a curved line as shown below. It doesn't have to be exactly as shown, just as long as it's a curve.

4. Then, cut along this line. Now you have a wrap skirt!

5. Extend your skirt piece out. It should look something like this. Measure all along the pink dots.

THE RUFFLE

6. Next, you're going to sew your ruffle piece.

As mentioned at the beginning, you probably didn't get to cut one continuous piece (unless you're making a little girl's skirt).

Sew all your pieces together to make one continuous piece. Hem your piece as well. For the grey skirt, I left a raw serged edge, because it was a more casual skirt. For the crushed velvet skirt, I did a hem with a double needle. Then, sew a gathering stitch on top. If your fabric is a little thicker (like my pink crushed velvet), I recommend gathering in sections, since the ruffle piece is long and the gathering stitches might break or not gather as well. For the grey skirt, I used one continuous gathering stitch, since it was a lightweight jersey.

7. Gather your ruffle piece to match the measurement from Step 5. It will look like this when pinned to the skirt. (Pin right sides together!)

Close up:

QUICK TIP: If there is a little extra amount after you pinned, simply chop it off.

(It's easier than pinning all over again, and this won't affect the outcome).

This is how it looks like when the ruffle piece is sewn to the skirt piece.

8. Finish the seam of the side that is a straight line.

I serged this side.

THE WAISTBAND

9. Arrange your skirt how you did so in Step 2. It's easier to visualize & arrange this time, since the skirt is almost done.

10. Sew a basting stitch on the front and overlap piece of the skirt. This will keep those two layers together.

11. Cut out your elastic and sew it closed.

12. Cut out your waistband piece with measurements as shown below.

Then, sew it closed.

13. Fold it in to make a waistband.

14. Place your elastic inside the waistband.

15. You will need to stretch it and adjust it a bit, since the elastic is smaller than the waistband.

16. Mark the front, back, and two sides.

17. Mark the front, back, and two sides on your skirt as well.

Match each point to each other and pin.

18. Then, stretch your waistband and pin to the skirt between each of the points.

And there you have it, a new ruffle wrap skirt!

How To Save Money Buying Fabric

Repurposing fabrics already in your home is the cheapest way to make your own clothes. Refashioning sheets, curtains, or clothes in bigger sizes found at your local thrift store is the most affordable route. I love refashioning because it's amazing seeing the transformation. I personally love seeing other people's refashioned designs.

Just as much as I love to refashion, I love to create from scratch. It is a transformation as well, since a piece of fabric is created into a top, skirt, dress, etc. I've rounded up a few tips for getting some good deals when shopping for fabrics.

Shop online

Online stores such as Tencel fabric suppliers are great places to shop for good quality fabrics at a reasonable price. Such stores tend to be able to offer better prices than physical stores because they don’t have the overheads that come with running a shop. You can’t touch the fabric before you buy, which may put some people off, but generally most sites have good descriptions. Make sure to factor in delivery costs, which could be expensive if you’re buying online from a company based in another country.

One of my favorite places to purchase fabric is from Mily Mae Fabrics. It is a mama-owned business, the selection is beautiful, and the prices are affordable. (Shipping is also very reasonable and she will refund shipping costs if your package costs less to ship!) This is where I got all of these beautiful velvet fabrics in the prettiest pastel colors.

Save money with remnants

Many textile retailers have a remnant bin which is used for leftover cuts of fabric. You can often get discounts of up to 50% on these remnants. Some of these are only just less than a yard in length making them still suitable for making many types of clothes as well as accessories such as scarves. This site Crazy Little Projects offers just some examples of clothing items you can make with remnants.

Here is my remnants bin! Even if you don't end up making anything with them, remnants are very good for practicing new techniques and for testing different sewing machine settings. Every time I change thread colors on any of my machines, I use a remnant piece to test out my stitch.

Use solid colors

While I totally love florals and feminine prints, I believe there needs to be some basics in your closet. (To match those lovely prints of course!) By working with solid colors more, you may be able to save money when buying fabric, since solid colors tend to be cheaper than patterned fabrics. I have provided an example below with fabrics from Knitpop. See the price difference between the solids and prints? These colors may seem boring on their own, but you can always mix them with patterned fabrics using these patterned fabrics as accents. There is a lot of inspiration you can find online for using solid colors. (Pinterest will be your new best friend!)

Time it right

Shopping at the right time could also help you to take advantage of seasonal discounts. Certain colors and patterns tend to be more popular at certain times of the year and generally more expensive – for example greens and browns are fall colors and patterns using these colors tend to be more expensive to buy during fall and less expensive in other seasons.

It’s also worth taking advantage of sales such as the January sales and Black Friday in which you’ll find discounts on all kinds of fabrics. Also, I recommend you sign up for Joann's emails and texts. I get sale alerts and coupon codes all year round!

Shop abroad

While it’s not cost-effective to fly off abroad just to buy textiles, it is worth taking advantage of local markets if you were planning on traveling anyway. What's a better souvenir than fabric? :D I always hit up the Fashion District when I visit LA. One of my favorites to visit is Micheal Levine's (also one of the most well-known), but I also visit all the other small shops around. You just never know what you might find!

You can often find local textiles in their raw form and you won’t have to pay for the import costs that can often push the price up when buying these textiles back home. Certain exotic materials such as alpaca wool can still be very expensive in the countries they come from due to the hype – however you may be able to find cheaper prices by shopping in non-touristy areas.

Pants to Skirt Overalls Refashion

The last time I had some overalls, I was in the second grade, so I was due for a new pair right? I had been seeing these skirt overalls throughout social media, and I really liked them. One day as I was scrolling down Facebook, I saw a short video tutorial of someone turning shorts into overalls, and I thought "hey I could do that with a skirt!" And here were are with my tutorial.

I sewed these back in October, but didn't get a chance to take photos until Thanksgiving. I decided to finally post this tutorial today, since in my mind, it is the official end of fall. Tomorrow is December, which means the start of all things Christmas. :D (Well, in my mind at least, that's how I see fall and winter).

I had some adorable little daisy buttons in my stash that matched these overalls perfectly, in my opinion. These are definitely going to be my go-to overalls for fall. (Even though these are my only pair of overalls and fall is now over LOL).

There are a few things that I learned for next time and I will share them to help you in your skirt-overall-making journey.

1. I would use a bigger pair of jeans to make my overalls. These were actually my size, but the legs fit loosely. I would use a bigger size next time to have more wiggle room.

2. Have matching fabric for the straps. I don't know how, but I did not even think of the straps until I realized I didn't have any fabric to make them. Luckily I found a matching gold fabric in my stash. (See it does help to hoard fabric!)

THE SKIRT:

1. I started off by making a skirt from the jeans. I used the second method in my Pants to Skirt tutorial, since I did not have enough fabric to make a triangle for both the front and back.

I closed up the back and left some room for a slit in the back.

2. Next, I moved to the front. I seam ripped all the way until I hit the zipper.

3. Then, I cut out a triangle for the front piece.

I made sure to leave room for seam allowance around it, as shown below.

4. Cut a small slit at the beginning of the slit.

5. Lastly, I finished the seams and sewed the sides down. I also added a tack for strength.

Skirt: done!

MAKING THE OVERALLS:

6. These are the extra pieces after I cut my pants and turned them into a skirt. One of the pieces I used for the front triangle of the skirt. The other one I used to cut out the front overall bib, the back piece, and some tabs. Below is the cut chart for these pieces. I posted these measurement so you can get an idea of how to cut your own. I tried on the skirt and then placed the bib piece in front to see if I needed it bigger or smaller. The pink areas were already hemmed since I was reusing pants pieces.

Cut one of each with the exception of:

Overall straps: cut 2

Waist tabs: cut 4

6. The top part of the front bib, front pocket, and back piece was already hemmed, so I just hemmed and folded in the sides. (Shown here is the back piece. For the front pocket, I also hemmed the bottom part)

7. Then, I topstitched it on the front bib.

8. Next, I cut a slit on the side of the skirt, through the waistband.

9. I sewed the waist tab pieces together, leaving one end open. Then, I turned it inside out. I topstitched all around the edge (see next photo).

10. I finished off one slit opening with a zig zag stitch, and sewed on the waist tab.

11. Next, I attached the bib to the skirt, as shown below.

12. Then, I sewed on the back piece.

13. I cut out the straps, sewed down the sides and one side shut.

14. Then, I turned the straps inside out.

15. I hand sewed these adorable buttons on the front bib.

16. I made some buttonholes on the straps and put the buttons through.

17. At this point, I tried on my overalls to see where I needed to cut and sew the straps.

18. I finished off the straps with a serged edge, and sewed them on the back piece.

19. Lastly, I made on a buttonhole on the waist tab piece and sewed on a button.

New overalls done!
