When choosing our overall favorite, we stuck to the 5 key criteria mentioned above: comfort, noise, safety, stability & shooting, and maneuverability.

Let’s get the ball rolling with maneuverability. This hang-on blows most of the others out of the water. As well as weighing in at just 11 lbs, it’s one of the lightest tree stands out there by quite some way. Use, also sing its setup praises. It’s one of the easiest hang-ons to unpack and get in place and packs up so well that it’s easy to carry around with you, too. 

It’ll also hold up to 350 lbs, making it one of only two hang-on stands we have found that will cater to this weight range. 

Only a little to report on the noise front, which is a definite plus from where we’re standing. Some users have said there’s a little metal-on-metal contact when you collapse the stand to take it home. This can be sorted out with a little strategically placed tape.

Our research has also shown us that this is one of the most stable hang-ons out there, with many hunters stating just how secure they felt in a tree on this tree stand. Lone Wolf states that these hang-on stands adapt to trees anywhere from 4″ up to 22″, which is much better than most and gives you one less thing to worry about when picking your ideal hunting location.

Best for comfort: Millennium Tree Stands M150 Monster Hang-on

Of all the hang-on tree stands we reviewed, this one from Millennium was one of only two with a backrest. And let’s be honest, no one fancies resting their back against a tree if they’ve got a choice. So this one was a clear winner in terms of comfort. 

Aside from the backrest, the seat has other cleverly-designed features that make it all the more delicious to sit in. The chair has an ergonomic design that adapts to the shape of the body, and the sheer size of the seat, measuring up at a pretty impressive 17″ by 20″, make it just what your achy bones are after. And if that weren’t enough, you can adjust the seat’s height to get just the perfect amount of legroom. 

It will also be a great hit with all those bow hunters. The platform with this hang-on measures a huge 24″ by 37″, and the whole seat packs up to give you even more space on that enormous platform to take that all-desired perfect shot!

But fear not, rifle hunters, as Millennium also has an optional shooting rail similar to the one you can find here. 

As with most hang-ons, this tree stand comes with a standard weight limit of 300 lbs. 

Regarding mobility, it also packs flat and is easy to carry around with you. However, all that comfort does come at a price, and that’s the weight of the beast. It’s definitely on the heavy side. Weighing a huge 19 lbs, you’ll probably not love lugging it around with you. 

Another downside is that the Millennium is the second most expensive hang-on tree stand we have analyzed. It’s still within reach of the other cheaper options, though, and sometimes you have to pay a little more to get a little more. Who can put a price on a comfy backside, after all?

Best for a tight budget: Big Game Captain XL Hang-on Tree Stand

We love this Big Game Captain XL Hang-on tree stand. It’s rare to find such great value for money on hunting gear like this.

First, let’s kick things off by talking about the ease of setup. It’s easy peasy and is going to save you tons of time out there in the forest. 

Users have also raved about just how sturdy this guy is. We’re not really surprised, given the enormous platform size of 24″ by 30″. Plenty of space to move around, take your shot, and do a merry jig (we’re just kidding!)

However, as with any budget product, the hang-on has a few criticisms. The first of these is the size of the seat. This one measures up at a skimpy 14″ wide by 8″ deep. Talk about sitting on the edge of your seat. The only upside is that it gives you more platform space to move around on. 

Another slight drawback of this hang-on is its weight. It supports the standard weight limit of 300 lbs but weighs 18 lbs. It’s not the heaviest option by any means, but it is also far from being up there with the lightest. 

It’s also just a tad on the noisy side. Hunters don’t quote this as a huge problem, but as you’ll probably save so much by going for this option, we’re hoping there’s a little left in the bank for something to take the edge off a few of the squeaks like this spray or wax.

We were generally quite disappointed by the range of tree stands available for big guys. We did love this one, though.

The XOP-EXTREME Vanish EVO’s whopping price tag is the biggest downside. And it is whopping. But now we’ve got that out the way, let’s look at everything you get for that money.

First, as a big guy, you want a good weight limit on your hang-on tree stand to keep you safe. This one will keep any hunter up to 350 lbs safe in their chosen tree. Not bad going.

Second, you’ll feel even safer in this tree stand, knowing that its self-leveling device will stop you from hanging off the tree at a precarious angle. 

And despite that level of sturdiness, this cheeky little hang-on is weighing in at just 10 lbs. Just 10 lbs. You’re going to be shimmying up that tree like a squirrel. It’s the lightest hang-on tree stand we analyzed in our research. 

You’re also basically paying to sit in a cloud. The seat has 3 layers to it, making it a great choice for those looking for comfort. The seat isn’t the biggest in the world (13,5″ by 14″), but it is by no means the smallest option. 

Another point worth mentioning is the size of the platform. There are definitely some hang-on tree stands out there with much bigger platforms. This one measures up at just 19.75″ by 27.5″. That’s not bad. Again, it’s not the smallest of the bunch. But if we compare it to Millennium’s 24″ by 37″, you can probably see why we’re slightly underwhelmed.

This hang-on has many virtues, which we will go on to tell you about. But clearly, we’ve chosen it because of its silence. It has self-lubricating Teflon washers that make for such silence that we created a new category for this hang-on. This is our stealthy favorite.

As with most other hang-ons out there, it’ll hold up to 300 lbs and has a self-leveling mechanism which we love. One less thing to worry about.

It’s also super comfy and has a nice little backrest that any hunter would be happy to lean against.

Another great thing about this hang-on is the size of the seat. It’s the biggest one we’ve come across in all our research, measuring 15″ by 21″. Definitely worth thinking about this one if you’re in the big-butt club.

The platform is also up there among the biggest that we’ve found, coming in at 26″ by 31,5″. That should give hunters more than enough space to get their shot on.

This hang-on also boasts more of Hawk’s fold-flat technology, making this tree stand compact enough to carry around as you search for your hunting spot for the day.

But, of course, all of this marvellousness does come at a price. And it’s not the $$$, as this tree stand comes in at around the average price. So, let’s get right to it. Why do we love this stand?

It’s also got that all-important low price tag, allowing you a little wiggle room in the budget to get some cool accessories like somewhere to hang your bow. 

As well as that, it’s also a stealthy option, with no metal-on-metal contact to give you away. 

But the best bit for us is the size of it.

The 24″ by 30″ platform has been treated with anti-slip technology to keep you safe as you move around on your tree stand, even on the dampest days. And the seat flips back to give you full use of it!

As with all decent-sized platforms, we’ve run into that age-old weight problem. We couldn’t classify this hang-on as a lightweight option, but weighing 17 lbs doesn’t make it the heaviest.

It’s probably not as comfy as some options out there. But with that much space and silence, it could be a good shout for all our bow hunters.

First, choose a good, sturdy, straight tree without dead branches. Make sure it’s on good ground, too. We don’t want a gust of wind to come along and blow you over. 

Next, invest in some good quality climbing poles & safety equipment. We’ve already written a little article about the best tree stand harnesses. 

It’s a good idea to practice at home with a buddy so you’ve got your technique well-rehearsed before you find yourselves in the wilderness. 

Lastly, remember that if your hang-on has been hanging on since last season, you will definitely want to check it over to ensure it’s still safe, there’s no rust, nothing has come loose, the ground conditions/tree haven’t suffered, etc.

SHARPSHAFT top tip: Never try to carry your weapon up with you as you climb. That’s a surefire disaster waiting to happen. Attach them to a line or rope you can pull up once you’re in position!

So, in short: Yes, of course, they are safe.

Q: How Do You Hang a Hang-on Tree Stand?

The first step to doing anything for the first time is practice. Make sure you find a tree in the garden or close to home that you can go and practice on before the big day. It’ll make everything a lot less stressful and maximize hunting time.

1. Get your first climbing stick in place. 
2. Get your stand & sticks ready. Have your sticks and ratchet straps on you to use, and attach your stand to a long rope that you can use to pull it up to you when you’ve reached the right height. 
3. Attach yourself to the tree using your climbing rope.
4. Keep placing your climbing sticks using ratchet straps until you’ve climbed to the right height. 
5. Once you get to the desired height, attach your safety rope and tether yourself to it. 
6. Pull your stand up and attach it to the tree.
7. Take off your climbing belt. You’re now safely attached to the tree. 
8. Fold down the platform.
9. Double-check all straps and safety equipment

Q: How High Should a Tree Stand Be for Bow Hunting?

There’s no “one size fits all” on this one, although most hunters tend to go for 17 – 20 ft off the ground.

The most important thing to consider is whether you’ll get a decent shot from that height and whether your tree will keep you stable (i.e., it doesn’t get too thin at the top).

Q: What Types of Trees Can I Hang a Hang On Tree Stand In?

The best type of tree to hang your stand in depends on where you find yourself and what trees you have available.

Nevertheless, there are some general principles you can follow. You won’t want to go for too young trees as they won’t offer you the support you need. Likewise, don’t go for anything that looks like it has seen better days. Your tree needs to be sturdy and well-rooted.

Think about your coverage too. Trees with a decent amount of leaf coverage will help to disguise you from whatever it is you’re hunting.

Remember tree diameter, too. Take a careful look at the instructions on your tree stand to ensure you choose a tree with which your stand will work well. Safety first, my friends. 

In terms of specific types of trees, steer away from trees with large amounts of sap, like maples. They’ll deteriorate your tree stand.

Outdoor life recommends old oaks, cottonwoods, and cedars, so if you’ve got some around, they’re a good choice. 

Q: What is the Minimum Tree Diameter for a Stand?

Generally speaking, you’ll be looking at somewhere between 9″ and 22″.

Nevertheless, it’s best to check the specs on the tree stand you buy, as they all vary slightly.

Q: Do Hang On Stands Damage Trees?

This is a tricky one to answer and really depends on the type of tree stand that you have. In general terms, trees are most damaged when their bark is tampered with in some way, leaving them open to infestation or rot.

In the case of hang-on tree stands, there’s not much to worry about on that front, as the stands are set up using straps that aim not to harm the tree in excess.

Common sense should be used anyway; if it looks like you’re damaging the tree, find a different spot or technique. A damaged tree isn’t going to support you the way a healthy one would, and we all need to take care of the forest we’re hunting in. 

Q: Should I go for a tree stand or a ground blind?

This can be a tricky one.

It’s mostly a personal preference. If you don’t like heights, that’s a clear point in favor of a ground blind.

Jokes aside, though, it’s important to think about your ability to climb 20ft up into a tree and sit there for hours. A certain amount of athleticism is required to shimmy yourself up there, and that’s only for some.

On the other hand, depending on what it is you’re hunting, it might not even be necessary. Think about how to get the best shot and what angle you’re looking for.

Q: What Is the Difference Between a Hang-on Tree Stand and a Climbing Tree Stand?

The first and most obvious difference is how you get into the tree. With a hang-on tree stand, you will use climbing sticks to help you get up. On the other hand, with a climbing tree stand, you have to support your weight on your arms and pull the base of the stand up with your feet. 

The second might be the degree of mobility. There’s nothing worse than needing to come back down the tree when nature calls and having to bring your entire tree stand down with you. That won’t happen with a hang-on tree stand, though, as they can be left in position while a hunter climbs back down the tree. Pretty handy!

The third and final thing you need to consider is the type of hunting you’re doing and your experience level. Most hang-ons don’t come with any rail to rest your weapon on. 

Many of them do, however, come with fold-up seats, which allow you to make the most of the space on the platform to take a better shot. That could be ideal for bow hunters. But you’ll need to bear in mind that, in that case, you’ll have no guardrail and nothing to stop you from stepping right off your hang-on if you’re not paying attention. So experience and practice are important here.

Q: What Is the Difference Between a Hang-on Tree Stand and a Ladder Tree Stand?

As we always say, choosing a tree stand is an extremely personal decision.

The biggest difference between hang-ons vs. ladder tree stands is their maneuverability. Ladder stands are big and bulky and must be moved from one place to another. You don’t have the same freedom of movement as hang-on, or climbing tree stands.

Ladder stands are definitely not as subtle as hang-on tree stands, either. They’re much harder to blend into the trees and much more easily picked out. You’ll probably want to position your stand long before the season starts so that the animals in the area get used to seeing and smelling it. 

On the flip side, ladder stands win in size and comfort; they are much bigger and thus have more room to move about. 

Another good thing about ladder stands is that they can give you a feeling of being more secure than hang-ons, as you’ve normally got some guard rails, too. They could be a good idea for those wanting to hunt with a firearm.

Q: Are Hang-on Stands Comfortable?

Due to the nature of the stand and the fact that you have to carry it up the tree with you as you climb, we’ve found that hang-on stands tend to boast fewer creature comforts than some other types of stands. 

Some out there have heavily-padded seats, and a few even have backrests for the weary hunter to lean back on. Much more comfortable than resting your back straight on the tree, that’s for sure. 

Q: What is the most comfortable hang-on stand?

According to our research, the Millennium Tree Stands M150 Monster Hang-on is the most comfortable hang-on stand. You can read our review of the M150 tree stand here.

Q: What is the lightest hang-on tree stand?

Most hang-on tree stands weigh up somewhere between 10 and 20 lbs. The lightest one we recommend was the winner of our “Best for big guys” category, and that’s the XOP-EXTREME Vanish EVO, which weighs just 10 lbs. 

The lightest one we don’t recommend is the X-stand ground seat at a ridiculous 3 lbs because, well, it’s just intrinsically flawed. We don’t mind the Millennium Treestands M7 Microlite Treestand, which weighs 8.5 lbs.

Ok, so please don’t knock me until you’ve heard my case. My favorite tree-stand safety harness is not a tree-stand safety harness. It’s this black diamond climbing harness with a robust Hunter Safety System tree strap.

If you’re dead-set on a ‘real’ safety harness, I would go with this Hybrid Flex Harness from Hunter.

Hunt with a bow?

Made in China, this two-arm long EZ hanger from REALTREE screws into the tree behind you and extends out to the side of your body for you to hang things. Simple and effective. It’s a reliable place to hang your bow and is excellent value for money.

Hunt with a rifle?

This EZ Reach Tree Stand Organizer will take care of safely positioning your rifle. It can be adjusted to 360º and works universally on all climbers and ladder stands.

Hunt with a crossbow?

Check out this crossbow mount from REAL TREE. It has a longer hook to accommodate your crossbow.

Include great binos

Check out these Nature DX 8×42 Binoculars from Celestron. These are easy to use binoculars for everybody, and they come at an excellent price for a premium product.

They have high-quality lenses. Image lighting levels are outstanding, as well. They give more contrast, too, with an excellent resolution. They also have 8x magnification power and a 6.5-foot close focus. Great specs!

They’re waterproof too, not to mention protected against the elements. They won’t fog up and have a rubber-armored polycarbonate housing.

The interesting question is, why bother with binoculars if you can only shoot forty yards? Well, first, you’ll want to track animals coming from afar to get ready. But more importantly, for me, you’re going to be up in a tree stand for a long time, and the outdoors is a beautiful place! Discover everything there is to know about your local area.

Rope to pull up your pack/your bow

It seems pretty straightforward. Trying to climb up the tree with your pack, equipment and even a bow slung over your shoulder is a terrible idea. Climb up first, and once at the top, pull your gear up with this 30-foot Muddy Tree Stand Lift Cord with rubber-coated carabiner clips.

Tree Stand Umbrella

Climbing Sticks

Getting in and out of a tree stand is dangerous. The safest way to get up and down is to use climbing sticks.

My recommendation is this Hawk Helium Climbing Stick for tree stands. The traction-grabbing steps feel secure, and it’s quick and easy to get them set up. These steps fold up for transportation.

Face Mask

It gets frickin’ cold outside. It seems pretty apparent, but wrap up with a nice warm facemask (and fingerless gloves too). Check out some of these options for ideas.

Seat Cushion

It will depend on the brand of your tree stand, so have a look at these options. Sitting outside all day can get pretty uncomfortable. Treat yourself to a comfortable seat cushion.

While you’re at it, pick up a waterproof seat cover so that it doesn’t soak right through under challenging conditions.

Lastly, lumbar support is a complete game-changer. You’ll notice the difference after no more than a couple of hours.

Hooks for accessories

Screw-in single hook

Go for a simple screw-in hook on which to hang things. 

I like this two-arm long EZ hanger, which screws into the tree behind you and extends out to the side of your body for you to hang things. Simple and effective. I’m a fan!

Multi-hook strap-on holder

Or, go nuts and get a multi-hook! There are a few options available.

The Pine Ridge archery equipment hanger is a great way to spread yourself out and relax up high. It includes three equipment hangers, and the five-feet strap fits trees up to 18 inches in diameter. The great thing is that this equipment hanger – made in the USA – won’t damage the tree.

This lightweight belt from Muddy allows you to hang several accessories on its four adjustable hooks. It’s not only suitable for tree stands but excellent in camping or other outdoor situations. It fits any tree up to 22 inches in diameter, with a nice quick release buckle. It holds up to 50 lbs.

A shooting rail

It’s far from a necessity, but it sure helps to have somewhere to rest your gun or crossbow and take a steady aim.

Here’s a shooting rest for rifle hunters, which works with any tree stand. It hangs from above and allows you to track your game vertically and horizontally.

The weakest link on a climbing tree stand is the tree stand cable between tree and stand. Summit has some of the highest-quality wires in the industry but check yours regularly to see they’re still in shape. Time will wear them down.

This pair of replacement cables from Summit is 65 inches long and have brand-new shrink tubing. They’re great for safety while keeping noise to a minimum.

Can I stand up? Does it make noise when I stand up?

A bow hunter doesn’t have the luxury of shooting from seated in a tree stand, unlike rifles and crossbows which can generally get a comfortable shot.

You want a tree stand that has a base with enough space to stand up. I personally like tree stands with dual-action seats that flip up. This allows you more freedom on the base. You have more space to manoeuvre, because the seat is flat against the back of the tree.

The cushioned padding of the seat, if done right, will cover the metal of the tree stand. It’s important because when you, your clothes or your bow touch the metal of the tree stand it often makes a loud noise which can startle and scare off wild animals. A disaster!

Does it have space for me to hang my bow?

A bow isn’t exactly small…you don’t want it in your hands at all times. Some tree stands have special, built-in bow holders where you can rest it. Ideally, you don’t want this to be made of metal either because…it makes a lot of noise!

Is it easy for me to climb up with a bow?

The Best Tree Stand Umbrella Reviews

All methods have their pros and cons, from traditional tree stands to fabric ground blinds, box blinds, elevated box blinds, and natural blinds.

Taking some interest in these novel methods doesn’t mean leaving behind the old ones – there’s a time and a place for each. The Ghostblind has also carved out its niche for when traditional methods don’t quite facilitate your hunt as much as they could.

Ghostblind Review: Specifications

The Ghostblind Predator and Runner Blinds can make a hunter completely invisible, in any location, in any season.

The Ghostblind 6-Panel Runner Blind is a crossbow and firearm runner blind for sitting on the floor, while the Ghostblind 4-Panel Predator Blind is the 6-Panel’s taller counterpart; designed for bowhunters and hunters that wish to raise themselves off the ground.

Honestly, seeing is believing. Check out this video – you’ll be shocked at just how invisible the hunter is:

Most people think these panels are made from cardboard, but they’re made from fluted plastic, making them lightweight yet extremely durable. The fluted design means that any water that enters the ghost blind flutes will run out of the bottom of the blind.

The mirrors are made from plastic, no thicker than a credit card, and designed to be waterproof and flexible to keep them from shattering. The mirrors do not have the perfectly crisp reflection of a bathroom mirror because they are not made of glass. It’s undesirable for weight reasons, and you don’t need it to be a perfect reflection to mirror your immediate ground environment.

The blinds are waterproof and shatterproof and built to fold up so that the mirrors remain on the inside to avoid damage. When your ghost blind arrives for the first time, you’ll see it comes with a protective film on to prevent scratching in transit. You can go ahead and remove this.

The 6-Panel Runner Blind has a height of 26 inches and weighs 8 lbs, while the 4-Panel Runner Blind is 46 inches tall and weighs 12 lbs. Each blind offers height extenders you can purchase separately; the runner blind height extenders add 6.25 inches, while the Predator’s add an extra 7 inches. The latter is tall enough to hide a hunting blind chair or to conceal the longest recurve bows. These extenders are worthwhile for tall hunters.

If you purchase the extenders, it’s tricky to work out where each panel slides. Once you’ve got it, mark the backs with a pen or similar to quickly reattach them in the future. If you’re worried about the extenders getting scratched, Ghostblind has made a separate extender carry bag to transport them safely.

Indeed, the Predator version also has a popular Deluxe Carry Bag to make it easier to carry your existing backpack and chair simultaneously, which is very useful as your total gear mounts up.

The mirrors will reflect wherever you have them pointing. If you lean them back, the sky will be visible, so the mirrors have a natural, in-built forward tilt to ensure there’s no glare from the sun or sky. Thanks to this forward tilt, game won’t see itself until it comes within about four feet.

This blind is excellent for kids. It provides a safe and fun alternative to climbing a tree or being stuck in a tree blind. They feel like they’re out in the forest. You can have fun setting up and moving tree stumps and branches to make a den, although no brushing in is required whatsoever.

Ghostblind Review: Features & Benefits

How easy is it to set up? 10/10

When you open your blind, it’s best to stand behind it and unfold it around you. It’s much easier to set it up from behind than in front of you. Then you take the four tent stakes and slide them through some holes at the bottom of the panels. That stops you from accidentally knocking it over.

On a windy day, you can take the extra step of securing it with strings and stakes to secure it further. On very windy days, Ghostblind recommends propping tree branches against it to prevent it from moving.

I love the fact you can use this blind in any setting, from grassy fields to thickets and brush.

When setting up the blind, you must be careful not to position yourself between changing landscape features. If you’re on the edge of a forest looking out over a snowy field, the blind will look terribly out of place.

In front, you will see snow reflected despite the forest backdrop. It’s easy enough to avoid with a little practice. In this case, you would move the blind back five to ten feet into the forest so that the reflected forest floor coincides with the forest backdrop.

Equally, if you hunt on a cornfield, place the blind behind the first line of crops. It will ensure that the blind reflects the crop line and you become completely invisible.

A high sun or an overcast day is the perfect situation. Where it gets complicated is in the middle of a field with a low-setting or low-rising sun. If the sun sets behind the blind, it will cast a visible shadow that will pick up in the mirror reflection. The best tactic is to set the blind up facing the sun.

Don’t be put off by this, however. A shadowed Ghost Blind before a setting sun is still ten times less conspicuous than a traditional pop-up blind in the middle of a field.

An understandable concern is that the blind only faces one direction. You have a couple of options here. You can find a place to set up that has trees or a bush behind you. Alternatively, you can purchase a cheap throwdown blind to cover your back.

Game doesn’t have to get used to the blind because they can’t see it. You do not need to set your blind up early, nor to brush it in. Just get out there, open it up and start hunting!

How comfortable is it? 5/10

The blind has carrying handles and a small strap to carry around. These are fine, but if you have many things to take, it can get uncomfortable, so I’d recommend the deluxe carry bag to carry a chair, gear, and blind together.

The Ghostblind is undoubtedly a fair-weather blind. In the end, you’ve no roof and no protection behind you, so you’re entirely at the whim of the elements.

What’s more, if you purchase the 6-Panel, you’re going to be sitting on and shooting from the floor. If that suits you, fine. But many hunters will struggle with this, particularly for long periods. The Predator 4-Panel allows you to set up a stool or hunting chair, making a big difference.

I wasn’t uncomfortable sitting on a stool hidden behind the Predator. Nonetheless, I don’t feel justified giving it a high score for comfort—five out of ten.

What’s it like to shoot from? 7/10

Before going hunting, take your blind out to practice shooting in your backyard. You’ll need to get comfortable shooting through the ports. If you hunt with a rifle, ensure the muzzle sits poking through the ports outside the blind. It avoids damaging your panels with the muzzle blast.

The reflective panels do an outstanding job of reflecting the surrounding, and I’ve never struggled with sun glare, thanks to the in-built tilt.

We all know that the first time animals see a blind, they tend to get a little spooked, but that’s not the case with this blind. They can’t see it and can end up very close.

In this blind, you need to be far more concerned about movement. Crossbows and rifles hide well, but a bow will always have some part sticking out. That part will inevitably move when you knock, draw, or launch an arrow.

How well is it built? 8/10

As mentioned, the mirrors fold inwards to avoid picking up scratches. Over time the mirrors will pick up scratches that aren’t possible to remove. Even so, don’t worry about scratches and marks because when you step back ten yards, you can’t see either the marks or the handholds of the blind.

Try to avoid traveling in vehicles with the blind. The vibration causes the mirrors to rub together, which will create a white mark on them. If you must travel with them, you can place a soft cloth between the mirrors to stop them from rubbing together. Instead of cloth, my favorite option is to put these kitchen cabinet door bumpers on them to avoid them touching.

The fluted design is simple yet effective. Any rainwater that hits the blind will flow down and out through the flutes. Your blind will require washing to maintain the plastic mirrors. The best way to do this is to lean your blind up against a wall and use a water hose and a soft cloth to clean it.

On rare occasions – generally in the mornings – the blind mirrors may fog up due to the changing temperatures. It’s easily fixed by applying an anti-fog treatment to the mirrors.

The plastic mirrors are attached with pressure-sensitive adhesive, which over time may appear that it’s detaching. It’s simple enough to fix, though – lie your mirrors face down on the ground and place a heavy weight uniformly over the back.

Don’t leave your Ghostblind standing up outdoors whenever you’re not going to be using it. Always pack it away for good maintenance to ensure it lasts for many years.

Once wrapped up in its bungee chords, store it properly by lying the blind flat on the floor or hanging it on a wall. Avoid leaning it against a wall because it will warp the shape over time. Don’t fret – lie it flat on the floor with weight on it to resume its original form if this does happen.

Value for Money 7/10

I think this blind is an excellent tool, amongst others, for having fun while you hunt.

All in all, some might say it’s expensive for what it is, but I don’t see it this way. I think it’s a brilliant piece of engineering that has been perfected over time to improve durability and weight. It does get pricey when you add up all of the extras, but I still think it’s worth it for a quality product made in the USA. It transports easily and takes seconds to set up. You’ll get plenty of kills from it at close range – animals never know you’re there.

You get a reasonable 180-degree view from the front from which to shoot. The side windows it has allows you to peek and get a view behind.

Primos Double Bull Deluxe Ground Blind: The Pros

It’s a good blind for two people, with all their gear. It’s compact, and will pack up to travel around while hunting.

The Double Bull Deluxe also has an adjustable shooting window. This feature is fantastic, because different users (with different heights) can adjust the windows as appropriate to their needs.

This ground blind unpacks extremely quickly (probably in less than a minute). This is one of the main reasons to buy the Double Bull.

The Double Bull Deluxe is also made of good materials. It remains sturdy in the rain and wind.

Generally this ground blind lasts for many seasons. Lots of customers say how happy they are with its longevity.

Primos Double Bull Deluxe Ground Blind: The Cons

You would assume that the Double Bull Deluxe was one of the best ground blinds for portability. Unfortunately this blind is still a little on the heavy side for a portable blind, weighing an extra 5-10 pounds. What you lose in weight, you gain in setup time, though. So bear it in mind.

Also, the carrying case is a bit awkward. It’s quite hard to return the ground blind to its case, and there’s nothing more frustrating when you’re tired at the end of a hunt.

The strap and buckle can slip a little, so actually as portable ground blinds go, it’s not the easiest to cart around.

Summary

The Double Bull Deluxe is a comfortable, spacious, two-person ground blind for a fairly expensive price. It’s fabulously easy to setup, although it suffers when you pack it away.

It’s not a good ground blind for transportation either, so I recommend using it on hunting trips close to home or not far from the beaten path. The added weight and difficult straps will eventually bog you down.

Although it has its downsides, it does what you need from a ground blind at an excellent price point. Read on to find out what I loved and what I found challenging about the Doghouse.

Things to consider before buying a ground blind

A ground blind is an excellent hunting tool for many situations; however, there are quality alternatives. The following section highlights when and when not to use a ground blind.

Use a ground blind to

Get close to prey without being seen or heard

A ground blind is excellent for getting close to animals without them noticing you, particularly if you’re a photographer or wildlife enthusiast. A blind will not only hide you but can also mask small sounds you make while inside.

Hunt in well-known areas

An issue with ground blinds is that it can be hard to move them around from place to place, depending on their weight and dimensions. These days we take many things on a hunting trip – from ground blinds and ground blind chairs to weapons, cameras, food, entertainment, heaters, rugs, and more. Although individually they don’t weigh much, these things quickly add up to significant weight.

Therefore – certainly in the case of hub-style ground blinds – you’re best restricting yourself to well-known areas such as private land, where you can set up and leave a ground blind.

If you’re going further afield, check out popup or runner ground blinds because they are lighter to carry. Two-person ground blinds like the Doghouse or the Care Taker weigh as little as 8-15 lbs compared to the 30+ lbs of the Big Cat 350, or even heavier semi-permanent blinds.

That said, there are still disadvantages to hunting further from home with a ground blind. Animals always react to changes in their environment. If a ground blind suddenly appears from one day to the next, they’re likely to steer clear. Brushing-in your ground blind also takes time, so doing these every time you hunt could be frustrating and time-consuming.

In these cases, I like to use my tree stand, usually a lightweight climber. The lightest climber tree stand weighs 11 lbs. That’s more than the lightest hang on stand at 4 lbs, but the climber stand is better equipped for dealing with different tree problems you might find and for getting in and out quickly.

Make a long hunt as safe and comfortable as possible

Despite the tree stand being better adapted to specific situations, a ground blind wins every time for safety and comfort.

I’ve sat in a tree stand in the rain and heavy wind, and it can put a damper on your experience. A ground blind is perfectly adapted to protecting you from the sun, rain, wind, and snow. You can even take heaters, blankets, or whatever else you need to make it work.

Keep your feet on the ground

As for safety, there’s no comparison between keeping your two feet on the ground and shimmying up a tree 15-25 feet.

Don’t use a ground blind to

Bow hunt

It isn’t a blanket rule – there are plenty of ground blinds out there from which you can bow hunt. That said, it’s hardly ever comfortable, so I’d err towards a tree stand where possible. If you do want to bow hunt, check out the best ground blinds for bowhunting.

Track down game

If you like to hunt aggressively, then a ground blind might not be for you. You could either use a tree stand to set up in an area you come across while running and gunning or stay light on your feet without anything!

The exterior features eight window openings, with portholes on three of the four sides, with a door on the final side to enter. Each window has camo-covered shoot-through mesh, and the finish of the Durashell Plus fabric blends well into your environment. On the inside, it has ShadowGuard technology like other Ameristep ground blinds. It helps to eliminate shadows and silhouettes when too much light is coming into the blind.

In the package, you’ll receive the Doghouse ground blind, a backpack carrying case, stakes to attach it to the floor, and some high-wind tie-downs.

Ameristep Doghouse Ground Blind Features & Benefits

How easy is it to set up? 10/10

I’m giving this blind a ten out of ten for set up. It pops open as soon as you take it out of the carry case. Other blinds generally don’t take long, but this was crazy fast. You’ll need one minute to feed the poles through to strengthen the structure, and then you’ll stake it down too. The catch with these easy-open products is that they are ordinarily troublesome to tear down or get back into their case. I can’t say that it was as easy as setting up, but after battling for a minute or so, you realize the technique, and as of then, you’ll find it just as easy to tear down. It also fits nicely back into the carry case. You don’t have to force it away. Overall this is the Doghouse’s best feature.

How comfortable is it? 6/10

The Doghouse is billed as a two-person ground blind, but you could argue it’s better as a premium one-person space. Two big six-foot men side by side will feel cramped, especially when surrounded by gear.

One person fits more than comfortably, and you could have a heater, gear, and pack nicely placed around you. In the case of two people, it depends on what you take with you, and how long you’ll be in there.

Although the zippers can be noisy, what they do well is retain heat in the blind when you’re hunting at low temperatures.

What’s it like to shoot from? 5/10

This blind favors crossbow and rifle hunters due to its dimensions. When you shoot a bow, you find yourself altering your drawback to accommodate for the reduced space. Even though it just fits, at some point, you’re likely to touch the blind with your elbow or bow. Remember that this doesn’t just move that area but will jog the whole blind, which could give you away. You can try angling your crossbow to shoot from the back corners, which provides you with some more elbow room, but it could be more comfortable.

If you want to remain well-hidden, I like the shooting ports. You can still get fair visibility, but you’re significantly reducing the black silhouette visible from the outside.

What’s more, the portholes/windows are low. I first tried shooting from seated, but I was too tall. Like in the video, the best option was to get on my knees to take a shot. I don’t mind doing this, but some hunters won’t be able to.

As for the windows, if you need to open up a different one to get an angle on an animal, you have to scramble to unzip them, which makes a loud noise. If you have to tear the velcro mesh down, stop what you’re doing and let it run away… It’s too loud!

How well is it built? 5/10

The loops where you attach the stakes to the ground are weak. If you stake the blind down in sustained heavy wind, the blind may fly away, leaving the stakes in the ground. It’s good to brush your ground blind right in against a tree or a similar windbreaker to stop this. The poles are also of a quality that is susceptible to damage under similar conditions.

The Durashell fabric is of better quality. It stood up well to branches and bush without ripping, although I imagine that it will be susceptible to a few rips and tears over time.

Value for Money 7/10

In the value for money category, I’m giving it a seven out of ten. It’s one of the cheapest blinds on the market, and you can often get a deal on it, which brings it down to pocket-money prices. If you only hunt from a blind once or twice a year, this is a great option.

Where it loses points is on the build quality and functionality. It’s a viable option for crossbow and firearm hunters, but it makes it challenging work for a bowhunter. It’s also more adapted to one person than two.

The Ameristep Doghouse is crazy easy to set up. As soon as you remove it from its carry case, it will pop up before your eyes. I’ve never seen such an easy set up on a ground blind. You’ll need a minute to run the structural poles through and stake it down, and you’re ready to go.

How to fold up/take down Ameristep Doghouse ground blind

Initially, the Doghouse may seem tricky to take down, but once you ‘get it,’ it’s nearly as easy as setting it up. You fold it into its case position and then slide it into the case. It’s great that you don’t have to fight to get it into the case either. It’s well adjusted with easily enough space to slide it in. Hats off to Ameristep on this. The first time won’t take you more than two minutes, and after that, you’ll consistently tear it down in 15-20 seconds. Impressive.

Recently we wrote an article on the best ground blinds on the market, and quickly realised that the options were fairly limited for bow hunting. It’s because 80% of ground blinds have a height well below 6 feet, and many of the ground runners (great for portability) are built for rifles and crossbows to pop up and shoot above, but had no benefits for a bow hunter.
