Finally, it has been set. ESPN reported what all Filipino boxing fans have been waiting for.

The Manny Pacquiao - Floyd Mayweather fight is set on May 3, 2015 (Manila Time) as confirmed via Mayweather's post in the social media app, Shots.

In this post, Mayweather shared a photo containing signatures with the caption that both fighters have signed the fight contract.

I wish that Manny Pacquiao will train as hard as ever.

I wish that he take a leave of absence from Congress and the PBA.

I wish that he will do everything to make this fight exciting and end up with a win.

Go, Manny!

Kobe Paras Saves My Sports Weekend

Kobe Paras could very well be the first Filipino to play in the NBA.

And that realization more than made up for my gloomy sports weekend.

My sports week consisted of the following not-so-fun results:

Roger Federer losing in the third round of the 2015 Australian Open
Tiger Woods missing the cut in his first tournament of the year.
Brgy. Ginebra Gin Kings continue to not living up to their potential

But this Kobe Paras dunk during a recent game more than made up for those.

And with this dunk, I have high hopes that Kobe Paras could very well be the first Filipino NBA Player.

Maria Sharapova in Manila

My girlfriend and I was channel-hopping late last night when we chanced upon a tennis match coverage of Channel 23 that featured Maria Sharapova here in Manila.

I thought the venue was somewhere out of the country but to my amazement, it was at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City. At least to me, the camera angle made the tennis court seemed like at some other stadiums abroad.

Anyway, Maria Sharapova was great in TV. And the fans at the venue were treated with a come-from-behind 1 set win over Kristina (I forgot the surname) 6-5.

It was only an exhibition match made more interesting by a shot clock for serving and the annoying buzzer signifying nearing the time limit or its expiration.

Maria Sharapova's acknowledgement of the warm welcome she, and the rest of the players who were part of the exhibition, received sound sincere. And I felt that the gesture will surely endear her more to Filipinos.

The exhibition tennis match is part of the International Premier Tennis League (ITPL) . I learned more about ITPL via Sports5.ph

Congratulations to the Swiss Maestro - Mr. Roger Federer - for leading Switzerland to its first ever Davis Cup Championship.

ESPN Glitch

I love ESPN. But even a great sports site that it is can not be immune to glitches.

I was browsing as usual last Sunday when I saw this page:

Notice that conflict in the report and the score shown.

In the title, it says that the Raptors overcame an 18-point deficit to hand over a fourth-straight loss to the Cavaliers, but the final score shown indicates the Cleveland winning by 2 points.

Clearly, there was glitch with the ESPN website. As the win-loss record of both teams is way ahead of the young 2014-2015 NBA Season.

I would gladly work on that sports website just minimize such kind of Glitches.

Lim Eng Beng - Mr. 100% Free Throw Shooter

Wow! Lim Eng Beng never missed a free throw in his entire college playing career.

Perfect from the free throw line? That is an insane record to have! I seriously doubt if it will ever be broken.

How I wish there could be old video tapes of him shooting free throws. If this milestone was achieve in this age, he will be remembered visually for eternity.

Perhaps our local NCAA can dish out an award for free throw shooting accuracy aptly dubbed as Lim Eng Beng Award.

I would venture a guess that as a Green Archer, him delivering a basketball championship against rival Ateneo, would be his greatest achievement. No wonder, DLSU retired his jersey # 14.

Fun Rolling at the Company Bowling Tournament

Free bowling game, free snacks and unlimited fun and for the first time, genuinely competing. Last Wednesday's intra-company bowling games was the best experience I had in a sporting competition.

This year is the second chance I was fortunate to be included in the team representing our project site in a Bowling tournament sponsored by our construction firm. The first one was held two years ago, but it felt happy just to be included. This year is miles away different as our team is really competing. We won both games the last time and currently has a win loss record of 5-3.

No, we weren't the top team. We are not regular bowlers. But me and my teammates are one in desiring victory in each game. Personally, I feel that I have grown comfortable with the 10 lbs ball I'm using. It's just that I need to be consistent in my delivery and to focus all energy on the game.

I think there only one game day left. But I am really happy that I have been part of it as a player and not just a fan cheering on the sidelines.

Still, I had set some goals for myself. I hope to break 150 points. Also, I aim to clear those SPARE chances that I know I am capable of doing.

Here are some motivation for myself.

The way Gilas Pilipinas played against basketball powerhouse Argentina made me Twitter active.

I am not really an active Twitter user. But last night, I can't help but rue the fact that I am not that fast enough in creating tweets. I felt the need for an outlet to my excitement.

The defense, the passing, and the conversion of baskets by Gilas Pilipinas, when they made that run in the opening quarter, seemed to me on a different level. And they did that when Andray Blatch sat down due to early foul trouble.

I am not that proud of my twitter skills but I can never be more prouder to be a Filipino and to be represented by the most gutsy basketball national team of my country.

And definitely because of these awesome dunks by Gabe Norwood.

Rappler.com reported that Mr. Moreno won an Olympic Gold Medal for mixed team archery event at the on-going 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

As I read about this piece of good news, I eagerly e-mailed Rappler.com so that I can republish their artilce here and spread the news. However, I was only given permission to summarize it.

As a Filipino sports fan, I am really glad that another Filipino has brought honor to our country. I hope that Gabriel Moreno will continue to persevere despite the odds encountered by all Filipino athletes.

Here's hoping that the next time I blog about Mr. Moreno, I will be having goosebumps because I will be writing about him winning a medal at the Summer Olympic Games.

My Yonex Badminton Bag

For the past month, I have enjoyed the increase in regularity of playing badminton with my colleagues at work. Since then, I have been thinking of adding to my badminton gear.

This desire was further bolstered when my playing partners bought badminton gears for themselves such as new badminton racquets, badminton shoes and badminton bags.

Today, I finally purchased something new for my badminton playing hobby - a yonex badminton bag.

Last week, I was at Toby's in Megamall and inquired about the same badminton bag that one of my playing partners purchased recently. I really liked to get the same because I feel that the bag can be used not only for badminton but as a regular backpack too. However, the said model/design was already sold out. Instead, I was offered a Victor badminton bag.

The Victor Badminton Bag was the backpack type also and colored red. It has compartments for badminton racquets and shoes. I was also offered a 25% discount. But since my budget was not enough, I said to the sales guy that I needed more time to decide.

This day, I and my girlfriend passed by the Yonex store in Megamall. My eye was caught by the badminton bag on display. But I diligently checked other designs. In the end, I chose this badminton bag because I feel that it offers all the things I stated above.

I am pretty much excited to use my new Yonex badminton bag this Friday for another badminton playing day.

Sundate Bowling with Tintin

More than just fan watching from the sidelines, I love sports for the activity and the competition. That's why I cherish every chance I get to play any kind of sport. What makes playing more special is when I get to play it with special people in my life.

This Sunday, I was able to play some bowling with my girlfriend Tintin at the Coronado Lanes in Star Mall Edsa Mandaluyong.

Just a trivia, it is in bowling get-together that I first met her at the old Bowling alley in SM Megamall. So, there is an added flavor whenever we got to play. After completing our Sunday commitment at our respective work, we decided to meet at Star Mall to play some bowling.

Perhaps it was a Sunday, that there is just quite a handful of people playing. We immediate got our lane 19 and lane 20. Bowling fee at Coronado Lanes in Star Mall Mandluyong during Sundays is only Php 100 per game. Rent of Bowling shoes is Php 35.

My personal goal whenever playing is to score at least 100. On our first game, I was able to score 114 with 5 spares but no strikes. I was generally satisfied. On the next game, I myself was surprised to score 165, a personal best. I had 3 strikes and 4 spares. I even had back to back strikes. What a very lucky day indeed for me.

All in all it was a very enjoyable Sunday for both of us. I hope that I will be able to play sports more often, not just Bowling but other sports as well.

Tiger Woods Should Seriously Consider Derrick Rose Recovery Plan

Much as I am accustomed to seeing Tiger Woods dominating golf, then consistently winning, I can only grimaced to read that he missed the cut on the 2014 PGA Golf Championships.

Why has he or his advisers have yet to consider emulating Derrick Rose's recovery plan? I know they play different sports and suffer different injuries but I would rather Tiger Woods shut his game down for the rest of the year.

I still believe those scientific theories that our body has its own way of healing itself. Rest, physically and psyhologically, might do the trick for Tiger Woods. Perhaps his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus record is taking a toll on his body and psyche.

I hope he reads about Derrick Rose who was said to be back in elite formby no less than revered USA Basketball Coach Krzyzewski. Rose took his sweet time in rehabilitation despite pressure from other people to return to active play during the recent NBA playoffs.

Why can Tiger or his advisers learn a page or two for that.

As a fan, I can accept Tiger Woods not winning a golf tournament, but it's hard to see him go out in a limb trying to reach his ambition.

With the rate things are going, even Jack Nicklaus has doubts that Tiger will be able to surpass his golf championship majors. Mr. Nicklaus even think that young Rory McIlroy can win 15 - 20 majors.

I hope that Tiger, do the best he can to prepare to capture no. 15, - preferably The 2015 Masters.

Badminton Sunday Turned Bad

Badminton is the only sport I enjoy playing nowadays. I'm really excited every time a playing schedule is set. Imagine my disappointment when a supposed to be Badminton Sunday just turned out to Bad.

I have these buddies who came from the same high school as mine. A few days ago, we have agreed to play on Sunday (which is yesterday) starting from 9 am onwards.

Though I arrived late, surprisingly, it was I who arrived first around 9:30 am. So, I waited. Around 10 am, I begun making calls to know the where abouts of those who I am supposed to be playing with.

I was totally disappointed to learn that one of the guys backed out through one of the other guys without informing the rest. A few minutes passed, thankfully, another player arrived.

However, we do not have the guts to play against other players already in the courts as we are both beginners. So, we just went home.

I was pissed off. And that was an understatement.

Paul Lee, Gilas Takes Away Bronze Medal from China - 5th FIBA Asia Cup

Wow! Paul Lee showed why was added to the national team - Smart Gilas. His three pressure packed free throws brought the Philippines to a Bronze medal finish at the 5th FIBA ASIA Cup in Wuhan China.

I admit I have already conceded the third-place game to China. Me, of the weak heart.

China was leading by two points, with one of their guys about to take two free throws. I am sure like many of the old fanatics of asian basketball, we know the reputation of chinese basketball players when it comes to shooting and free throws. Perhaps, it was the pressure, but the guy missed both.

Good thing our players got hold of the rebound and push the ball upcourt. The ball ending up in Paul Dalistan Lee's hand. When it comes to "angas" in basketball, Lee has made a name for it. He was trying to shoot a 3-pointer. But there was a chinese player in front of him. Then, comes Lee's basketball presence of mind - fishing, and getting, a foul while trying to shoot at the 3-point line.

And then his "angas" took center stage for the whole Asia to see. As I remember, he was one for two in his previous trip to the foul line.

Amidst the boos and the heckling of the supporters of the host country, he sinked the first free throw. Then the second one came swishing to the net. Finally, breaking China and its supporters' heart by making the last one.

China might have felt what we, Filipinos, felt in the asian games against South Korea. When Olsen Racela could have made it a 4 point lead with his usually reliable free throw shooting. As it turned out, SoKor made a three to snatch away the win from us.

The win is indeed a great consolation after the beating our team suffered in the hands of the mighty Iran team. The way Gilas won the bronze speaks volume of their battlecry, our battlecry - PUSO!

Paul Lee's addition simply means we got another player with the heart to win.

Congrats team Gilas, for not giving up. For coming behind against China and bring us something to cheer about.

Thank you Team Gilas, my appreciation had me ressurecting this blog.

Keifer Ravena Sublime in Leading Ateneo Past Archrival DLSU, But ADMU pulls out of Filoil Pre-Tourney

Keifer Ravena delivered a sublime performance in leading an undermanned Ateneo Blue Eagles squad over archrival De La Salle Green Archers this afternoon at the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.

Keifer's jumper was lethal. The Green Archers was able to trim down what was once a 17 point deficit into 6. But Keifer was there to save the day for Ateneo. Posterizing defenders with two crucial jumpers and quelling DLSU's comeback bid.

I hope that Keifer continue to blossom. He will be facing taller and more athletic guards in the PBA.

It is just sad that Ateneo is pulling out of the pre-season tourney, citing injuries to many players as the reason

Aren't collegiate teams have Team B's? Perhaps Coach Bo Perasol can give exposure and good experience to Ateneo players in their team B. It will surely help them develop. Just my two cents.

Mayweather Vs Alvarez - Finally, a real fight for Mayweather.

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fight is now a done deal!

After reading that Mayweather will be fighting Alvarez on September 14 here, I couldn't agree more that for the first time, Mayweather picked an opponent that the fans wanted him to fight and one that is very much capable of dealing him his first loss as a professional boxer.

Actually, if you've seen sportsnation's survey, Pacquiao-vs-Mayweather is still wanted. Mayweather-vs-Alvarez though comes in second. With Pacquiao's drawing power fading due to his devastating loss to Juan Manual Marquez, it is easy to understand Mayweather's choice. It is really about what fight will give him the most profit.

Alvarez has nothing to lose and everything to gain in this fight. Even if he loses, he is still young. Perhaps if Alvarez loses and Pacman comes away victorious in the Pacquiao-vs-Rios fight, maybe Alvarez-Pacquiao could be a possibility.

For Mayweather, a convincing win will further cement his legacy.

Sports sites are now abuzz about Phil Jackson's latest book, Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success.

I am beginning to like the book because excerpts show that the books bolsters further that Michael Jordan is REALLY the greatest basketball player of all time.

Who else have the right to compare the two legends of the game than the one who coached them?

Aside from the obvious reason, I would really like to learn Jackson's brand of leadership. Maybe, I could use that to be leader myself.

Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight Still Wanted

As much as I have given up on a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, there are still people who wish to see that fight happen.

If you take ESPN's sportsnation survey as to who should Mayweather face in his next fight, it is clear that a lot of people want Pacman to challenge Money.

Obviously, Mayweather camp would pick the one who could help them make more money and can be expected to favoring a Mayweather-Canelo fight.

I hope that Pacquiao too have seen and understood that many people still like to see him and mayweather fight. I hope that would mean more motivation for him to come out spectacularly on top of the coming Pacquiao - Rios bout.

Finally, Manny Pacquiao has chosen to fight vs Brandon Rios this coming November 24, 2013. We know our man, Manny Pacquiao but who is he up against? Who is Brandon Rios

When I first read about the Pacquio-vs-Rios fight being set, I immediately searched youtube for Rios.

And I liked that this young fighter loves to brawl and boasts of a 31-1 professional ring record with 23 knockouts.

This is good news to us Pacquiao fans. Rios style, if he will bring the same on the ring come fight night, appear tailof-fit to Pacman's style.

And although Rios is younger, I believe that Pacquiao still has the speed to evade Rios' attacks and the power to knock him out. No less than knock-out can bring back Pacquiao in the conversations with the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Juan Miguel Marquez.

But to do that, Pacquiao need to focus on boxing. I'm sorry Pacman. But I wish ~~you'd lose this coming election so~~ (Darn! Pacquiao is unopposed) that you can focus back on boxing. With Filipino champions losing championships left and right in the world stage, we need Pacman to bring back Philippine boxing in the map.

I have always skipped ads whenever browsing youtube.com except this one. Keifer Ravena can shoot while suspended on air. Wow!

Kiefer Ravena is a one in generation talent and his career is growing and growing. I am a fan of basketball and I respect his talents and contribution so far in Philippine college hoops. Also, I believe that commercials or Ads are really PR propaganda for both the product and the endorser.

However, this commercial by Kiefer really got me pumped up. The Kid from the Ateneo Blue Eagels is really something when it comes to basketball. Watch this:

No matter if this took a lot of repetition, making a shot while suspended on air with the goal moving is really, really hard.

Go, Kiefer! I hope that you bring Philippine basketball to new heights!

The Los Angeles Lakers is going to the 2013 NBA Playoffs. As a new Laker fan, I am relieved that the guys in purple and gold is into the postseason. That means, a chance to see or hear about my favorite player still playing, Mr. Steve Nash.

Though I am not really in favor of him going to the Lakers, I still want him to be more successful. He has had a great career but one thing's missing from his accomplishment is a championship. With the Lakers, I thought that he has a good chance in at least reaching the finals.

But his first season with the Lakers is injury plagued. Admirably, he has accepted the role given to him. That truly is a mark of great man.

Hopefully, he will be able to play against the Spurs.

Let's go Lakers!

Let's go to the finals, one step at a time. :)

Ordinary Day Turns to Great Wednesday Seeing PBA Greats

Wednesday was seemingly one of those routine work days. But the sportsfan in me was in for a great surprise.

I was starting things at work when an officemate announced in our small office that he and other officemates will be seeing Paras and Patriminio. He must've been joking, so I thought.After a few minutes, another officemate came back inside the office saying that, indeed, PBA greats are in a nearby clinic.

Upon hearing this, I immediately went to the nearby gym. And, to my great surprise, they were there - PBA greats of the late 80's and to 90's. They were there conducting basketball clinics. I am just lucky because our project is for the company that is sponsoring the said event.

WOW! There was Ronnie Magsanoc, Jerry Codinera, Alvin Patrimonio, Benjie Paras and Johnny Abbarientos in person!

They are PBA legends in their own rights. Even though they almost always beat my Ginebra team, they were among the best in Philippine Basketball during their primes.

Point laureate Coach Ronnie seemed taller than the one I am used to seeing on TV. Defense minister Codinera appeared to have gain weight. Tower of Power Benjie Paras looked serious and a bit menacing with the beard but then everyone knows he is a comedian. Hehehe. The Captain Alvin Patrimonio and Flying A are a bit far, but I see their familiar movement.

A welcome surprise to start my day.

My Sports Calendar is already Marked - The Masters 2013, Donaire vs. Rigondeaux on April 14, 2013

I have marked my sporting calendar for April 14, 2013 because it is the Masters and Donaire vs. Rigondeaux fight.

I am looking forward to the said date because it will be the final round of the 2013 Masters Golf Tournament and the Manila time coverage of the WBO/WBA junior featherweight title unification bout between our own Nonito Donaire Jr. vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux.

I am excited about seeing the final round of The Masters 2013 live free online courtesy of CBSSports.com and Masters.com as reported by Mashable here. It would be a blast as a golf fan to watch the drama that often unfolds during the final day of The Masters, culminating with the wearing of the green jacket by the champion. Tiger Woods chances of getting his 5th green jacket and closing in on Jack Nicklaus reverred major championships record of 14 grand slams will add to the things to look forward to in this year's edition of the tournament at Augusta.

As for the Donaire vs. Rigondeaux boxing match, I think that Rigondeaux's record is as imposing as pronouncing his name. Although Nonito's momentum and drive to follow on Pacquiao's greatness will eventually, I pray, lead to a victory and a celebration on our country. A knock-out will surely elevate Donaire among the all time greats.
