Last week I went back to the Pacific Coast with a specific beach in mind I had never explored before. However, once I reached the coast, the sky was fully overcast with some distant fog around and it was pretty windy. I decided on the spot not to drive up further north as originally planned. Instead I opted to explore two locations just north of Santa Cruz I have visited multiple times in the past. I told myself that there are surely still some places there that I just haven't seen yet, or have only seen from a different perspective in the past. And I think my instinct was right.

The first image is from Natural Bridges State Beach somewhere between the well known arch and the tidepools. I had noticed these rocks before, but I had never made an image of them. From that particular vantage point and under the conditions when I was there, it just clicked.

Last week, I had another opportunity to visit the Pacific Coast. Since I hadn’t been there in a while and there were a few places I’d been wanting to check out for some time, I decided to explore the coast along Hwy 1 South of Davenport. The conditions were almost perfect, with interesting clouds in the sky complementing intriguing sea stacks. But it was very, very windy, and I had to shield my camera and tripod with my body all the time. Nevertheless, I made three images I am rather happy with.

Back in 2021 the Serpentine Pavilion exhibition made its way to the SoFA (South First Area) in downtown San Jose. This arched entertainment pavilion had travelled the globe with exhibitions in London and Toronto before arriving in San Jose. The structure is made of about 1,800 fiberglass frames forming a curved tent.

In December that year, I went to the SoFA district to visit the Beyond Van Gogh exhibition. The Serpentine Pavilion construction was still underway but nearly complete. However, it was completely fenced in. So I could only study it from the outside. Still, I found it fascinating as it reminded me of a honeycomb and I made below two images.

Many years ago, I used to spend a lot of time in downtown San Jose making architecture pictures (see the 2015 blog post Downtown San Jose). But then I found myself drawn more and more to nature. So on a whim, I decided last week to just go for a walk in downtown San Jose again with my camera and only one lens. I didn’t have any specific plans; I just wanted to see if any interesting architectural details caught my eye. And sure enough, a few did and it was fun. I think I’ll start doing this a bit more regularly again.

Early spring is a very good time for hiking in the greater Bay Area. Assuming there was a good amount of rain - which we got this season - nature is coming to life, and many plants are beginning to grow and bloom. And on top of that, the sky is still often filled with interesting clouds. That's why I really like this time of year.

A few days ago, I went for a hike in the Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve. It’s located south of San Jose and offers a beautiful hike with great views. And, of course, there are also many wonderful trees. Here are some images I took during this hike:

After a recent outing Along Ohlone Bluff Trail at Wilder Ranch State Park, I felt that there is more to explore at this special part of the Pacific Coast in Northern California. I therefore decided to go back last week. And while the sky and light was different, it was again a very enjoyable trip.

First, I found an intriguing sea stack, which casted two different shadows onto the sea at the same time due to its unusual shape. I do not remember to ever having seen something like this before.

Earlier this month I went on a hike at Santa Teresa County Park. It is located South of San Jose and I visit it regularly. This park offers many different hiking trails with great views of the surrounding mountain ranges. And, of course, it is also the home of many wonderful trees. I have often hiked past most of them, but it's always good to see them again and find out what's new. The weather was pleasant with inviting cloud formations between rain fronts. Below are four images I made that day:

Calero County Park is one of my go-to nature reserves when it comes to hiking close to home. It is not a long drive to get there, it is usually not crowded, and it is the home of many wonderful trees. So it came to pass that, unsurprisingly, I found myself hiking there on the last day of January. The temperatures were very pleasant and the sky was full of elegant cloud formations. That's why I find this time of year fascinating. Most of the trees at Calero are currently in deep hibernation, which further emphasizes their unique shapes and characters. And although I hadn't actually planned to, I simply couldn't say no to making below images:

Our recent outing to Four Mile Beach reminded me how wonderful the coastline at Wilder Ranch State Park is. That's why, a few days later, I decided on the spur of the moment to visit this area again to explore it more thoroughly. I started at the trailhead of the Ohlone Bluff Trail at a small parking lot at Highway 1 and made my way to Three Mile Beach and Four Mile Beach with a few stops in between. The trip was very enjoyable with intriguing clouds in the sky and no wind - ideal weather conditions for making long exposure seascapes. Here are four images I made that I am very happy with:

Earlier this week I went on a hike at Joseph D. Grant County Park. I haven't hiked there for nearly three years, so I decided it was about time for a return. The route I had planned went past three lakes (Grant Lake, McCreery Lake, and Bass Lake) followed by an excursion into the center area of this vast park. The greater Bay Area got a decent amount of rain the weeks before, so all three lakes were well filled with water. I also had to cross several creeks and was glad that, for once, I had my hiking poles with me.

Not a single cloud was in the sky and I enjoyed the sun without getting too hot. There were many wonderful trees that had shed their leaves for the season. And I liked how the blue sky made those bare trees stand out and made a few images along the way:

We visited Four Mile Beach - located 12 miles north of Santa Cruz - the past weekend. The weather was wonderful with little wind, some clouds in the sky, and comforting sunshine. Four Mile Beach offers exceptional views out into the Pacific and an inviting sandy beach to stroll along. It is also popular with local surfers. I have explored it more than eight years ago and came home with seascapes that are still amongst my favorites (Four Mile Beach blogpost), but had forgotten how wonderful it is.

This time around four Monterey cypress trees caught my attention. They are standing close to each other on a knoll forming a line while observing the sea. I was so fascinated by these four cypress trees that I decided to take pictures of them from different angles:

Maybe it's just my imagination, but I think there are significantly more foggy mornings this fall in the greater Bay Area. Sometimes even thick fog. Perhaps this is related to the above-average rainfall in October and November. I am not complaining though. Fog adds an extra layer of atmosphere to views in nature and can make trees even more interesting.

A few days ago, I went on an early morning hike at my favorite local park Almaden Quicksilver having my camera and one lens with me in the hope of atmospheric views. Temperatures were on the cold side. But the mood created by the fog made it more than worthwhile and I came home with a couple of images I am more than satisfied with:

We have a tradition in our family to meet with our friends on an outing New Year's Day. This year we visited the beautiful Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz, Northern California. The weather was just perfect and I was able to make below image of the rock formation giving this State Park its name. I particularly like this image with its meaning and memory and therefore decided to submit it earlier this year to the 2026 Single Image Contest of the Black & White Magazine. And I am honored that "Bridge to a New Year" has been selected for an award.

A few day ago I had some spare time and I decided to explore a portion of Panther Beach - located South of Davenport along Hwy 1 - I had not explored before. Almost the entire trip I saw blue skies with some intriguing clouds. But the last few minutes of the trip the ambience changed completely. All of a sudden there was dense fog all along the Pacific Coast.

The coastline presented itself quite blurred when I arrived, and at first I found it difficult to compose an image.

Last weekend I went back to Coyote Lake Harvey Bear Ranch for a hike. A former colleague and now friend and hiking buddy invited me to explore a recently opened new area of the park North-East of Coyote Dam. The hike was very enjoyable. We reminisced about old memories from work and had good conversations about a wide variety of topics.

The weather was just right with temperatures in a pleasant range. The sky was full of intriguing clouds with occasional patches of light coming through. An ideal condition to make images of wonderful trees - at least in my book. Below are some images from this hike that I am very happy with.

My traditional visit to the Ries this summer was marked by not so good weather. It was cold and it almost rained every day. Still, I cherished the time with family and friends. The good news is of course that the sky was filled with steadily changing and captivating cloud formations. So whenever there was a break between rain showers, I either went on a walk or on a bike ride for the chance to meet some wonderful trees. And boy oh boy, coming across a large number of wonderful trees I did. I never came home from a summer trip to the Ries with so many images of wonderful trees I am very happy with.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to check out a park further up the coast I had never visited before: Mussel Rock Park in Daly City. After arriving at the parking lot and a brief walkaround I quickly realized that I just had arrived at yet another magnificent place along the Pacific Coast in Northern California. The vistas are just wonderful and there are many intriguing sea rock formations. And despite a mostly clear sky I had a lot of fun making below images which I am very happy with.

Four years after my last visit to Garrapata State Park my wife and I returned last week for a windy yet beautiful outing at this wonderful place. We first hiked inland a portion of the Soberanes Canyon Trail with its intriguing fields of cacti in the mountain valley and then we braved the rather strong winds and went up Whale Peak right at the coast for some spectacular vistas. There was also amble time for making some seascapes I am happy to add to my portfolio of Garrapata State Park images.

I was on a business trip in Nuremberg, Germany during the first week of May. The PCIM Expo & Conference was taking place there and my employer had a booth showcasing our latest products. One day I wandered around during a lunch break and noticed that the buildings at the exhibition center had intriguing lines, shapes, and patterns. Without further ado, I decided to do an architectural details study. Below are a couple of images I made that day.

Yesterday I hiked for several hours at Calero County Park starting at the Rancho San Vicente entrance. The conditions were near perfect with a sky full of clouds and pleasing temperatures around 15 °C (59 °F). I have often hiked at this park. Nevertheless, I almost always come across new, wonderful trees. Also some trees I have met before changed over the years or appear differently depending on the light or weather conditions. Here are five pictures I made yesterday and that I am very happy with.

After too long a time, I finally had the time and desire to visit the Pacific coast for making pictures last weekend. I visited the Rock View County Park in Santa Cruz, California. A place I hadn't explored yet, but which had been on my list for a long time. It was just wonderful to be back. I enjoyed it greatly. And the place bears its name rightly.

Hiking is still my favorite past time. I enjoy being out in nature surrounded by trees very much. So it is no surprise that several treescapes I made during hikes are in this year's selection:

The rain season has started here in the Bay Area. This means that we finally get occasionally intriguing skies after many months of a cloudless and blue firmament. Over the weekend we had a first substantial rain front dropping a fair amount of water. As it was on its way out, I decided to explore a local park for the first time yesterday early in the morning. Basking Ridge park is nestled in the South-East hills of the Bay area. It is not large, but offers some great views and I met several interesting trees. And together with the storm clouds in the sky it was the perfect condition to make a few images I am happy with.

Last weekend I went on a longer hike at the local Calero County Park in Northern California. The weather conditions were inviting with temperatures distinctly below 20 °C and an interesting because constantly changing cloud cover. I decided to bring my new camera and lens along. And it was well worth it. Despite having hiked at this park countless times, I came across several wonderful trees I have either not met before, or the conditions during earlier visits did not feel right to make an image of them.

The first of the three images below appeals to me especially. The tree in the front with its companion in the back radiates a silence and assurance. I therefore decided to stay for a while to enjoy it.

After the unfortunate event earlier this month, I got myself a replacement camera and lens. Because of the good experiences I made with my previous system over the past decade, I decided to stick with the Micro Four Thirds system. My new camera body is the OM-D E-M5 Mark III and the new go-to-lens is the same Panasonic Lumix 12-35mm f/2.8.

The new camera hardware did reignite my passion for making images. And since the Bay Area experienced a fall in temperature accompanied by skies full of clouds in the past few days, I decided to go out on a few slow pace and low key photo walks. For reasons unknown to me, I found three wonderful trees all situated directly next to water, like a lake or a pond. I think a fitting theme to start the journey with the new gear.:

Following a long running tradition, I visited the Ries for two weeks in July to catch up with family and friends and to enjoy its many attractions. The weather this time offered the full range of summers in Southern Germany. There were hot and humid days, overcast days, rainy days sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, and it even hailed once. One positive aspect of course is that the skies were often filled with interesting cloud formations. An ideal condition for making images of trees.

For the first time I explored an area named Roßfeld at the North-East rim of the Ries crater. It offers multiple hiking trails leading to spectacular views. I went there for hikes twice in the early mornings and met very few fellow hikers but came across some wonderful trees:

For various reasons I haven't been at the Pacific coast for an entire year. So it was about time to change that last weekend. I decided to explore an area I had marked for future explorations but have not yet visited. Starting from the Southern part of Bean Hollow State Beach I wandered on the Arroyo de los Frijoles trail. It's an easy 2 miles round-trip walk with a good deal of captivating coves, unique rock formations and small beaches in between.

Arroyo de Los Frijoles still carried water making its way through sand and rocks all the way into the Pacific. I made several images and the one below is my favorite because it shows the motion of the creek flowing into the ocean.

Coyote Lake Harvey Bear Ranch County Park is one of those parks I should visit more often. Every time I go there for a hike, I feel always refreshed and at peace afterwards. There are usually not many fellow hikers - especially in my favorite area of the park around Mummy Mountain. But there are plenty of wonderful trees. And if you manage to be there right after a rain storm, the clouds in the sky provide for a moody backdrop.

Below is a selection of my favorite treescapes I made at Coyote Lake Harvey Bear in the past years:

Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve is located in the South of Silicon Valley. It is not a very large preserve with only one trail looping around the entire area. Yet I always find it enjoyable hiking there. There are never large crowds and several benches along the trail invite you to savor spectacular vistas. And as you might have expected, one can meet many wonderful trees there. Below is a selection of images I made there over the past few years.

The Shoreline at Mountain View regional park is located at the west side of San Francisco Bay. It offers many unpaved and paved trails along the bay and around Shoreline lake. It is also the home of many different bird species, which can be observed year-round. I haven't been at the Shoreline for some time and therefore decided to revisit it at a cloudy day for a few hours between the years. There were not many people but plenty of wonderful trees. The trees near the bay are remarkably different from the ones I usually encounter on my hikes. Almost all of them kept their leaves during winter. And together with the intriguing clouds in the sky they allowed for some moody images.

I had some time off from work at the end of last year and the beginning of this year. I very much welcomed having time available to spend with my family, to relax, to get things done around the house, and to enjoy walks and hikes in nature.

One of the parks I visited is Guadalupe Oak Grove. It is not very large, but it is a gem right in San Jose and offers nice views and many wonderful oaks. This particular day, the sky was very moody with splendid clouds still hanging on after a clearing rain storm. Below are some images of the wonderful oaks living in this grove.

I do not know why, but I felt that this year came to an end rather quickly. Perhaps because there was so much going on. Anyway, about Mid-December is a perfect time to pause for a while and reflect on the year gone by. This includes my photography. I do enjoy this exercise. It helps me to remember and to appreciate the experiences I had while making the images and to become aware of possible changes in the type of images I am making.

Before I present my top 10 favorite images of the year, I want to mention two other highlights of 2023: The release of two folios of my favorite image subjects the Pacific Coast and Wonderful Trees and a video interview about my workflow for making seascapes.

This year I visited the Pacific Coast only a few times. Two of those trips were to Point Lobos - my personal favorite spot along the coast in Northern California. Another trip was to Arami Point, which I had never explored before. Below are three seascapes I made during those visits I am really happy with.

When I woke up this past Monday, I noticed a dense fog outside. Since we do not get this very often in the South Bay, I decided to leave a bit earlier for work and stop by Lake Almaden to see if I could make a few images to capture the silence and aura of trees and a quiet lake. And boy, oh boy! It was beautiful to walk around the lake and to relish the morning fog covering the area. It reminded me of a similar morning I was fortunate to experience at Cottonwood Lake early last year.

Santa Teresa County Park, located in the South Bay, is perhaps a somewhat underappreciated park. Whenever I go hiking there, I never encounter many other fellow hikers. Not that I mind the tranquility. I made many fond memories enjoying the quietness and scenic views along its many trails either hiking with my family or by myself.

And of course, Santa Teresa County Park is home to many wonderful trees. There are certain tree species I rarely encounter in other local parks. Below is a selection of some of those fine trees I enjoyed making images of throughout the years. The very first tree fell during a winter storm about a year after I made the image. It serves me as a memory of its splendor.

Like most summers, I visited the Ries the past two weeks to spent time with family and friends and to reconnect with this wonderful region. I cherish the time there and it is always a major highlight of the entire year. A sentiment I have expressed in related previous blog posts Summer Visit to the Ries and More Wonderful Trees of the Ries.

This time around, the weather was different compared to previous years. There was plenty of (much needed) rain sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and temperatures were noticeably cooler. But this did not stop me from daily walks or bike rides through fields and woods in between rain showers and I only got really soaked once. One upside of this weather is of course the moody skies that come with. A perfect condition for making images of the wonderful trees living in the Ries Crater.

It's funny how things work out sometimes. I haven't been photographing at Point Lobos State National Preserve - my favorite place along the Pacific Coast in California - for a very long time. I finally was there to make images last month (this blog post has the details and photos) and now I went back just four weeks later! There was a heat wave in the Bay Area and I had plenty of spare time. So off I went to cool down and to enjoy this wonderful area once more.

Last month I explored various coves in the North. So this time I decided to check out the Southern areas. At the end I only stayed near the Hidden Beach. There are plenty of intriguing rock formations that kept me inspired until it was time for a snack around noon. I was quite happy with the three images I had made so far and therefore decided to call it a day afterwards. Instead I enjoyed a small hike through the beautiful forest at Point Lobos.

The other day I had the chance to explore for the first time the Pacific coast near Pacifica in Northern California. And while the greater Bay Area was under the buildup of a heat wave with temperatures already well above 30 ºC on that day, the coastline was different. The sky was full of moody clouds, it was windy and the temperature was at least 13 ºC cooler. Near ideal conditions for making long exposure images!

I am thinking about creating folios (eBooks) for some time now. After a fair amount of considerations, I decided to get this project started with one folio of images each of my two favorite photographic subjects: The Pacific Coast and trees. It took a while to decide on the number of images per folio, select the images and their order, and of course to come up with and finetune the layout of the folio. And after some tinkering and doing it over a few times, they are now ready! I am happy to share both folios - available in PDF format - as a free download below.

Point Lobos State Natural Preserve is without a doubt my favorite place along the Pacific coast in Northern California. I have explored it many times with my family or visitors from out of town throughout the years. It offers beautiful hikes with wonderful trees and stunning vistas out into the ocean. It is also a great place to observe wild life.

Strangely and for some unexplainable reasons I have never been there by myself to make images. But this has all changed last weekend! At the spur of the moment and after checking the cloud cover forecast I drove down South and spent several hours around Bluefish Cove, Whalers Cove, The Pit, and Moss Cove. And what a treat it was! The weather was just right for long exposure seascapes with interesting cloud cover and very little wind. I came home with a couple of images - including one of an intriguing tree - I am rather happy with.

Joseph D. Grant is a fairly large county park in Santa Clara County, Northern California. To get there, you have to follow a windy road up to the Diablo Range foothills for some time. This has the benefit, that this park is not as frequented as other parks in the Bay Area which is always a plus in my book. You can check out all the details about this park here.

I have hiked there a few times in the past years and have always come across some wonderful and intriguing trees. The first two images are nine years old and they stood the test of time. Both are still one of my all-time personal favorite treescapes.

We went on a short getaway to the Pacific Coast in Central California last weekend. Its coastline is spectacular and there are plenty of enjoyable places for hikes with wonderful vistas. It is usually also not crowded - which I consider another plus.

On the last day before heading back, we visited Spooner's Cove at Montana de Oro State Park. I have never been there before and from what I have seen, I definitively want to go back to explore this area further. When we arrived, it was quite windy and heavy clouds were in the sky thanks to an incoming storm. But this did not stop me from looking for possible compositions. I put my tripod down into the sand and guarded the camera with my body from the wind as much as possible. And I managed to make a few images I am happy with:

Coyote Lake Harvey Bear Ranch County Park is located a little further South from where I live, which is the reason why I do not visit it regularly. This past weekend, however, the weather forecast looked good (clouds!) and I felt like going on a hike at a place different from my usual spots. So I grabbed my camera backpack and made the trip South to check out an area in this park I have not explored before: Mummy Mountain. And I was not disappointed. There are plenty of wonderful trees, not many other fellow hikers and the skies were anything but blue. I even had to "endure" two brief rain showers.

The first tree that caught my eye was an oak tree located right at the Rancho La Polka trailhead. It is full of character and stands all by itself.

Uvas Canyon County Park is a local waterfall paradise. It is also great place for camping. Something I have enjoyed with family and friends several times in the past years.

Along the relatively easy Waterfall Loop following Swanson Creek you can explore four waterfalls. Two additional waterfalls require some additional hiking, but are well worth the extra effort. The waterfalls are particularly beautiful after a prolonged period of rain with a good amount of precipitation. After several years with below average rainfalls, this was finally the case again this winter after fairly wet months of December and January. I therefore decided to pay Uvas Canyon a visit this weekend after having been there to make waterfall images back 13 years ago in January 2010.

Besides treescapes and seascapes I have a third subject I'm passionate about when it comes to making images: Architectural details. I am an electrical engineer by profession and I suppose that is why I am drawn to precise lines, curves, areas, patterns, and of course details. So when I had the chance to see the renovated lobby of a local company for the first time, I could not help myself but spend some time studying its architectural details.

Garrapata State Park is one of my favorite places along the Pacific Coast in Northern California. It's a fantastic area to explore its wonderful coastline and to hike amongst giants Redwood trees. I have visited there several times and was fortunate to come home with a few images I am very happy with. Two previous blog posts feature those images: Garrapata State Park and Return to Garrapata State Park.

Back in Summer last year, I submitted "Garrapata - No 7" to the 2023 Single Image contest of the Black & White Magazine. And I'm happy that it was chosen as one of the winning images in the Seascape/Water category.

Time is flying. The year 2022 is nearly over and for some reason it did feel shorter than previous ones. So I guess it is time for my favorite photos of the year post. I cherish this annual exercise because it invites me to reflect about the past twelve months as far as making images is concerned. So without further ado, below are my top 10 favorite images of the year:

My family and some friends visited the Pinecrest Lake area located in the Stanislaus National Forest in California for some fun and hiking last weekend. The whole of Saturday was overcast with some intriguing cloud formations and even some light rain now and then. Naturally I could not resist to make a few images during our hike. Pine trees are very common in this area and they have the same unique character to them like the oak trees I typically encounter in the greater Bay Area. Below are four images I came home with.

Last December I hiked on one Saturday morning my usual loop at my favorite local Almaden Quicksilver County Park. I have hiked past this tree at a trail fork near English Camp hundreds of times. But never have I been greeted by it like this time. The fog and the light were just surreal.

Earlier this year I decided to submit this image to the annual smartphone contest of the Black & White magazine. And I'm honored to have it picked as one of the winning images. It is featured in the December Issue No. 156 which is available at the newsstand now.

Pigeon Point is located along Highway 1 about halfway between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. The main attraction is the Light Station, which is closed to the public for many years now awaiting its renovation. You can read more about its history, plans for the future, and tips for visiting here.

Pigeon Point offers spectacular views and there are many captivating rock formations in the near vicinity. I have been there before at one time while it was engulfed by dense fog - a common occurrence for this part of the Northern Pacific coastline. The pictures I made back then are moody, mind you, there is not much to see of those intriguing boulders.

Last weekend I decided it was time to go back and explore it one more time. I made sure there was no fog, though I had to wipe down the filters on my lens between pictures as there was a lot of moisture in the air. Still, the rock formations presented themselves in their beauty and I came home with a few pictures I am very happy with.

I visited the "A Loaded Camera: Gordon Parks" exhibition at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University in the past week. The images on display were striking and raw. The two images I found the most impressing where Mrs. Jefferson from the "Back to Fort Scott" collection and of Ingrid Bergman from the "I Am You" exhibition. The Gordon Parks Foundation hosts an archive of his photographic work here - in case you want to check out more of his work.

While I was roaming about to explore some other exhibitions I couldn't help myself but notice the intriguing architectural details of the buildings. And since I am always attracted to clean lines, curves and shapes I took the opportunity and made a few images for my on-going Shapes Study project.

Why do I photograph Trees?

Why do I photograp trees? That is a question I have thought about for some time now. And I concluded, that there is no single reasons. Instead there multiple.

First, I love hiking in the many nearby county, state, or national parks and woods. The solitude and peacefulness help to clear and calm my mind. You can find me in the surrounding mountain ranges typically two to three times a week. So it is very natural, that I encounter many wonderful trees along the trail during all seasons throughout the year.

And when I meet one of those wonderful trees, I am always reminded, that they are unique. There is no other one that looks just like this one. In a way they also form their own universe. If you stop and observe a tree for some time, you will discover that it is full of life. There are all kind of birds, bugs, squirrels, mushrooms, lichen, and other plants forming a habitat. I find this absolutely fascinating.

My family and I visited Morro Bay for a few days during spring break. We have never been there before and it was wonderful. I also found time to explore a few spots along the Pacific during this trip. It was rather windy, so I had to guard my camera and tripod with my body as much as possible for several minutes at a time. Despite my best efforts, most long exposure photos unfortunately exhibited some level of blur. But I am happy that two images turned out okay.

The year comes to an end, which means I am going through my pictures of 2021 and select my ten favorites. It is a process I enjoy because come mid-December the days are getting shorter and it is a good time to reflect about my passion. And like always, I'm a little bit surprised how many pictures I actually was able to make.

This year there is a perfect balance between treescapes and seascape. I went hiking a lot this year and naturally I came home with plenty of pictures of fascinating trees. "Bäume am Feldrand" is from a visit to my hometown in Southern Germany in summer. I also managed to explore parts of the Pacific Coast I had or had not visited before. My favorite treescape of the year is probably "The Striking Branch Tree" and my favorite seascape of the year is probably "Garrapata - No 7".

I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Peaceful New Year and be kind!

Over the years I had the opportunity to visit many fascinating places and beaches along the Pacific Coast in Northern California. If you regularly visit my website or follow my blog, it is obvious that my pictures are usually black and white. This is my preference because it allows me to focus on patterns, lines, light, contrasts and mood of a particular coastline in front of me. There are, however, some scenes that are just as beautiful in color. Below is a series of six of those colored pictures.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to check out Granite Beach in Del Monte Forest, California. I have never been therefore, and boy was I in for a real treat. It is an absolutely magnificent part of the Pacific Coast in Northern California. I arrived in the morning, the weather was good (no clear blue sky) and I spent a few hours to make the four pictures below. I'm particularly happy with the first one, a seven minute exposure. The texture, form and contrasting orientation of the two rock formations fascinate me.

Earlier this month I hopped on a plane and went back to one of the most beautiful places on Earth, the Ries. The main reason was of course to catch up with family and friends. But I made sure to bring along my camera besides my phone as the Ries has abundantly wonderful trees mixed with captivating skies which are strikingly different to the ones in Northern California. I managed to make five 'treescapes" I am truly happy with.

I visited Pescadero State Beach for the first time back in April 2016. It is a fascinating coastal area in Northern California and I always wanted to return. Last weekend I was finally able to go there. And it was just as stunning as I remembered it. I had a wonderful relaxing time, enjoyed lunch on a lonely bench overseeing the coast, and even came home with a few pictures I cherish. Yet there is still so much more to explore. So I will be back. Hopefully it does take another five years!

I visited Garrapata State Park for the first time back in Jul 2020. The rough but immensely beautiful coast line made a lasting impression on me and I managed to come home with a series of six pictures, which is still one of my favorite series.

Last week, I finally had the opportunity to return and enjoy it once again. This time, I explored an area near the so-called China Lookout a bit further North. I arrived relatively early in the morning on a week day and only met a handful of volunteers cleaning some of the rocks from horrible graffiti. I am very grateful for their dedication.

Like last time, I was fortunate to come away with a series of again six pictures I am really happy with it:

Calero County Park is easily my second most favorite local park I enjoy hiking at. It is located just South of San Jose, California and also incorporates Calero Reservoir. A popular spot for water activities. Unlike close-by Almaden Quicksilver County Park, it does not have a rich history of mining to explore. But it is much less crowded and thus offers plenty of opportunities for short, medium or long hikes in solitude. Just the way I prefer it. Calero offers many splendid views and is the home of countless wonderful trees. Another good reason why I recommend this park to anyone.

Well, it is the middle of December and that means I do my annual Top 10 Favorites of the year post. This year was unquestionably rather different from other years, but I decided early on not to let this deter me from following my passion of hiking and making pictures. Preferably of trees and the Pacific coast. The only difference is perhaps that all ten pictures on this year’s list mean a lot to me because of the memories attached with them. I still remember exactly the experience and what I felt when I made them.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Peaceful New Year and be kind!

I have hiked at Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve a few times in the past. It is located in the South Bay and offers some great trails and a nice place for a break at an old farm. A few days ago I decided for the first time to hike the Calaveras Fault Trail all the way to the end where a picnic table and some exceptional vistas of the valley below greet you. The entire hike there and back again is more than 10 miles with a total elevation gain of 3600 feet. So I picked day with a fully overcast sky since the trail to the end point does not offer a lot of shade. There was even a fair amount of fog when I started from the trail head. One advantage of hiking such a relatively long trail with a fair amount of ascent is that you won't see many other fellow hikers. In fact, I had the trail all to myself for several hours.

I came across some splendid trees along the trail. And as I had hoped, the clouds started to break at around lunch time when I arrived at the top. This made for some intriguing skies like in the first picture.

A couple of days ago I visited Garrapata State Park. This wonderful gem stretches on both sides of Hwy 1 and is located a few miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The coast line in this park, accessible through a system of narrow trails, is just phenomenal. I spent many hours soaking in the plentiful distinct scenes. Fortunately the sky was overcast with a fair amount of fog inland. This allowed me to come home with a set of seascapes I am rather happy with.

It's summer in an even-numbered year. A perfect time to post some new pictures I made along the always fascinating Pacific Coast in Northern California - just like in Summer 2016 and in Summer 2018. Though this year has been very different so far due to the global pandemic. I found it difficult motivating myself to go out and make any pictures. This all changed last week when I had some spare time during weekdays mixed with an increasing urge to visit the coast. So off I went and visited two beaches I haven't been before and I also revisited one beach I had hit four years ago.

I have been to Martin's Beach - a relatively small and secluded beach located about seven miles south of Half Moon Bay - once in 2016. It features an iconic rock which reminds me of a shark fin. Back then, thick fog covered the entire beach and the picture I made is still one of my favorite seascapes. The weather this time around was different: overcast and no fog. I settled on a very different composition which shows the arch in the bottom of the rock.

The past two weeks I visited the home of my youth, the Ries, for a summer vacation and for catching up with family. The Ries is a very large meteorite crater that was formed about 14.5 million years ago. This unique place is still very special to me.

Like in the past three years, I decided to go to a location I had not visited before. This time I picked Franklin Point in the wonderful Ano Nuevo State Reserve. My interest in architectural details picked up again in the past few months. So when I was recently near Santa Clara University with some time available and with my camera with me, I strolled through the campus to see if something caught my eye. I have never explored the Southern part of Henry Coe W. State Park before. So when a coworker mentioned, that wild flowers are still in full bloom, I decided to check it out last weekend. I started my hike from the Hunting Hollow entrance and hiked Jim Donnelly Trail up to Wilson Peak. And yes there were plenty of beautiful wild flowers along the way.

It was also rather wet, quite windy at the top, and there was dense fog for the most part of the way up. This is a condition I enjoy, since it is perfect for moody treescapes. Below are my favorite six pictures from this wonderful hike. You can check out some other treescapes from an earlier visit to the Northern Park here.

The first storm systems of the Winter have finally arrived. The rain that comes with them is more than welcome. It delivers much needed water to Mother Nature and clears the air. We have not seen any substantial rain in more than a half year.

But there is also another reason why I am personally very happy about the storms: The time of boring blue skies is definitively over! So between two storms I spontaneously decided yesterday to go out and visit nearby Calero County Park South of San Jose. And I was not disappointed. I came home with a handful of treescapes with dramatic skies.

I am very happy that a series of six images of mine have been chosen for LensWork's "Seeing in SIXES 2018" photo book. This is the second time I had the honor making it into the book since this community project started back in 2016.

The series I submitted this year is about trees. If you follow my work, you know that they are a favorite subject. However, the images I had selected this year are not close up treescapes. Instead they show trees in a fair distance. Sometimes a tree or a group of trees in the distance - in relationship to its surroundings - captures the mood I want to convey much better than a tree covering most of the frame.

This summer I visited a few local beaches at the nearby Pacific coast in Northern California I haven't explored before. I did something similar back in the Summer of 2016. Like so often with Summer at the coast, the days started with plenty of fog. Sometimes even lasting for the entire day. Still, I enjoyed the time at the sea greatly and I came home with a few pictures I like. I am grateful that after all that years I can still find new opportunities to make pictures within just one hour or so car ride.

The first beach I visited was Whitehouse Creek Beach. It is located about 13 miles North of Davenport. There is a short trail from a nondescript parking lot right at the beautiful Hwy 1. As mentioned before, it was rather foggy when I arrived and I had the entire beach almost all to myself. Making pictures in fog has its own set of challenges. It is not so much the proper exposure, but to find an intriguing composition with my preferred subjects usually sitting right in the sea. Later in the morning the fog started to clear and eventually the horizon appeared. I think the three pictures from that morning illustrate the changing conditions rather nicely.

It is about time that I post some pictures I made at my favorite park. Almaden Quicksilver County Park is a local treasure with abundant history, trails, vistas, and wonderful trees. After some quick math I concluded that I may have hiked there close to a thousand times in the past fifteen years. And I am still not in the slightest tired of it. Every time I visit the park I meet old friends, I discover something not seen before, and I leave more at peace and refreshed.

I made the first picture on a misty Saturday morning hike in January 2011. This is my favorite tree in all of Northern California. You can find it along English Camp Trail just below English Camp.

Even after all those years of exploring, there are still plenty of locations left along the Pacific Coast in Northern California, that I have yet to check out. And this is of course very much a good thing! One of those spots is the "Four Mile Beach". This gem is situated four miles (pretty obvious, right?) North of Santa Cruz, California. I visited this beach for the first time last week and I surely did not regret it. I had the beach basically all to myself for the first few hours and came home with a few pictures I am really happy with:

A visit to Pismo Beach early in the year is almost a tradition in our family. Usually we stay for a few nights close to the sea. We have lots of fun with our friends at the beach or in the hotel pool for most of the day. And since there is so much going on, nobody really minds me disappearing for a few hours. So I get to make some images of the Pacific Ocean. It is my favorite subject after all!

I made the first two pictures early one morning before breakfast. It was cold and it was high tide. So there were not many people on the beach and I enjoyed the quiet before another action filled day!

The year is coming to an end. And what a year it was. A lot of changes appear to be on the horizon. But a few things also stayed constant: I went to the difficult process of selecting my top ten personal favorite photos of the year. And again, I did not make as many photos as I had hoped for. I started out with some treescapes, then switched to the Pacific coast (still my favorite place to hang out) and finally returned to treescapes again. There's one exception though: I did some abstract architectural photography and one photo made it to the top! Perhaps it motivates me to do more of it in the next year? Oh, as another sign of change: I made two of those photos with my phone. Can you guess which ones?

I had the fortune being able to spend quite some time at the Pacific coast this summer. And when I say spending time, I mean strolling around for hours by myself always looking out for a scene that I find intriguing or unique or attractive or just beautiful. Once I find such a spot, I will put down my tripod, set up my camera and hopefully one or two hours later I have made a photo that I like. My goal was to explore areas and beaches I have never been before. The coastline in (Northern) California is so long that this is not really a problem - even after years of exploring it. And now that summer is all but gone, I decided to post a few of those photos I made these past months.

Earlier in the year, the renowned photography publication LensWork launched a new book project. The novel idea is to show small projects of six photos each in book form. The call for entry was very well received with nearly 1,900 submissions. And I'm honored and quite excited at the same time that my project "A Study of Architectural Details" has made the cut! I never really expected this when I made the submission. I made the photos during several indoor excursions at the Packard Electrical Engineering Building at the Stanford University, at the San Jose Convention Center, and at The Tech Museum of Innovation San Jose over a period of nearly three years.

The book "Seeing in SIXES" contains 312 pages. 30 out of the 50 projects are in black and white. The rest is in color. It's a available for purchase in the LensWork online store.

This year went by fast. At least it seemed to me this way. Anyway, in terms of photography I did not do as much shooting as I wanted to. Still, I was able to go out and make photos a couple of times. Either just by myself or with friends - both of which I find very enjoyable. And as you can see from my ten personal favorites of this year below, I was drawn to my beloved Pacific Coast even more so than in previous years. There is just something about standing at the shores of this vast ocean and let it all soak in. I find it very calming and definitively puts things into perspective. Who knows, perhaps I will do more architectural photography again next year? And then perhaps not!

I suppose it is no surprise that after after having explored the lighter side of the Northern California Pacific coast in my last post, it is time to visit the darker side. More often than not this stretch of the Pacific coastline presents itself either overcast or covered with fog. And this suits me just fine. Because it helps me to make the type of long exposure photos I enjoy the most. So without further talk, I am presenting a selection of my personal favorites:

The Pacific coast is probably my most favorite place for making photos. It only takes me one or two hours in the car to get to one of the the most beautiful coastlines in Northern California situated between Point Reyes National Seashore and Point Lobos State Reserve. What I like so much about the Pacific is its vastness. Once I have decided on a composition and have pressed the shutter, I can soak in its beauty, wander around and explore, or let my thoughts flow freely. And there's plenty of time for it since it takes anywhere from 4 to 16 minutes to finish one exposure.

What I have learned over time though, is that I never know beforehand how the Pacific will present itself. It can either be light or dark. It's of course also influenced by the mood I'm in. The next couple of photos show the lighter aspect of some of the beautiful places out there.

The start is a photo I made recently at Bean Hollow State Beach just South of Pescadero Point. The rocks reminded me of travelers passing through for some reason.

The Embarcadero Center in San Francisco, California is a large commercial complex in the Financial District. With its high rise buildings (actually towers) and hotels I find it very intriguing. Every time I am in San Francisco for photography purposes I try to spend some time there. I just wander around and let me inspire.

For a few years now I am exploring downtown San Jose, California with my camera for one of my favorite activities: Architectural long exposure photography. And while some may think that it is perhaps not as attractive as San Francisco, it has many intriguing buildings and structures. From all those walks I know there are plenty of photographic subjects that will keep me busy for some time to come. Incidentally I use the term downtown rather loosely. As long as I can reach a building by foot from an arbitrary parking spot somewhere on Almaden Boulevard it fits my definition.

The first photo is also my personal favorite from all the photos I ever made in San Jose. What I really like about it, is the composition which depicts Adobe's headquarters located in Park Avenue as a mountain with various peaks. And since I made it late in the day near sunset only the top corner was still brightly lid by the sun. After converting the photo into monochrome this lid corner is transformed into a snow packed mountain peak.

The year 2014 is coming to an end fast. So I thought it's a good time to reflect on my photography this past year and to select my top ten personal favorites. It's a nice and interesting tradition since it forces me to look back and learn how I have developed as a photographer (or not!) compared to previous years. All in all I think I have made a good step forward with what I want to accomplish with my photos. Any winning a silver medal in this year's Intl. Photography Awards with a series about interior architectural studies surely will motivate me to continue on my path next year.

Well, it's almost Christmas. This means 2013 is almost over and it's therefore a good time to reflect on my photography. One part of looking back is picking my ten personal favorite photos of the year. I find this to be quite helpful for seeing how my photography has evolved compared to previous years. 2013 was clearly the year of the tree! Five out of the ten photos feature trees in one way or another. I don't know why I was so much attracted to them. I only know that I love trees because they are graceful and majestic at the same time. And they are very patient ;-) I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
